Brusher Bather Certificate Program Teri DiMarino
Your ability to do your job, and do it right, separates you from being “just a bather” to a position that contributes to the finished product in the salon. Teri believes that a good bath, brush and dry is 50% of a great groom. The bathing room is where most stylists started. Before future groomers begin to think of clipping coat, they must first know what to expect from the hair, and how to treat it to obtain desired results. Surprisingly, many great B/Bs remain in the bathing room, preferring the security of knowing there will always be a need for their expert services. Bathers-in-training, “groomer wannabes”, seasoned groomer techs and salon owners will benefit from this day-long program with tips on equipment and products to make the job easier. From getting the dog ready for the tub, to finding the right shampoo through proper bathing and blow-drying techniques, Teri will cover the B/B fundamentals. Safety issues and handling will be stressed.
Tools of the Trade & How to Use Them
Dematting…It’s Not What It Used To Be
From brushes and nail clippers, muzzles to grooming loops, Teri covers equipment basics, highlighting correct uses, in an effort to make the work easier and more comfortable for pet and bather. “These techniques and tools will make the finished groom a true work of art,” says Teri. Anals and ears will be also discussed.
Everyone has a technique for dematting a neglected pet. For some, it’s a shave-down and then entering the pelt in a Mat Contest. For others, it’s a timeconsuming, hair-splitting experience, destined to take its toll on the pet, the B/B or both. Teri examines the most common and effective products, tools and techniques for the demat dilemma without getting all tangled up.
What’s In Those Bubbles??? Shampoos, Conditioners & Spray Tocopherol, Ergocalciferol, Sodium Chloride. Teri takes a “groomerseye” view of the stuff we use every day in language we can understand. Shampoos, sprays and conditioners are our most expendable items but what do we really know to select the right product for our situation? (Those scary words are techno-speak for vitamin E, vitamin D and simple table salt, often found in many grooming products.) 4
Getting the Most of Your Bathing & Drying Time Bathing and drying are the most underestimated aspects of our jobs. Techniques can make or break a groom. The ability to properly apply products, thoroughly clean and then dry the pet will have a direct influence on the finish. You will hear about timesaving equipment and techniques.
THURSDAY SEMINARS Drop Coats with Jonathan David Jonathan David
Drop coats can be a challenging groom to tackle. Join Jonathan in this session dedicated to mastering drop-coat breeds as well as mixed breeds with similar hair. Jonathan will cover the use of thinning shears for layering and using snapon combs to achieve a cute and manageable look that even the most discerning client will love! Jonathan will also share his technique for achieving a beautifullylayered round head and face.
Making Pooches Perfect with Creative Grooming Angela Kumpe and Adriane Pope with special guests Alyssa Kasiba, Jayne Gallagher & Adrian Smith
If you have ever wanted to learn creative, now is the time! Many of your clients have seen what is possible on TV shows like ABC’s “Pooch Perfect” and HBO’s “Haute Dog” and “Well Groomed” and have gotten a taste of creative grooming. The odds are you have already been asked about these shows by some of your clients. The time to add a new product or service is always while it is in demand. Adriane Pope and Angela Kumpe will be showing you how to incorporate creative styling into your salon or mobile. They will cover all the techniques and tools used to get those “as seen on TV” looks. Two of the top creative stylists will show you how to help your clients choose a design, what products to use, quick and easy ways to add a pop of color or a simple pattern, marketing creative services and much more. If that’s not enough, you will have the chance to meet some of the stars of ABC’s Pooch Perfect! A creative Q&A session with Alyssa Kasiba, Jayne Gallagher and Adrian Smith will be held at the end of the seminar so you can ask them all of your burning questions.
THURSDAY SEMINARS AKC Hand Stripping Certificate Course Scott Wasserman
This four-hour AKC Hand Stripping Certificate Course will focus on the history, physiology, tools, and techniques of hand stripping and will end with a demo of a breed standard grooming on a wire coat and a sporting dog. This course is designed to give groomers an in-depth understanding of hand stripping to better serve the needs of the dog and client. Scott will discuss how to choose the right tools, proper techniques, bathing, conditioning, and how to start puppies and groom the geriatric dog. He will also be teaching the ways of staging a coat, rolling a coat, trimming flatwork, and how to establish quality furnishings and feathering. In addition, time allotment and how to price will also be discussed. Hand stripping isn’t just for show dogs! Hand stripping and carding can be utilized on a regular basis in your salon. Scott will cover working with the pet clients to help keep them in top shape with easy maintenance, as well as how to promote healthy skin and coat using simple, easy-to-use techniques. These techniques may be used on wire-coated and spaniel-type mixed breeds as well! This class is a great addition to your grooming association certification, or the perfect opportunity to be introduced to the world of continuing education. The AKC will mail a frameable certificate to everyone attending the course 8 to 12 weeks after course end.

Figure out what you should be charging, how to streamline your day-to-day operation, and be confident that you are doing everything to its maximum potential.
Maintain Those Sharp Edges
Join Jay Batista for one of his most popular seminars! First, Jay will go over in detail how to achieve the perfect teddy bear head on any breed. He will give you step-by-step instructions on accentuating a pup’s personality by creating soft, cuddly expressions in the face. Then, he will demonstrate a round, stuffed animal head on a model dog so you can get up close and see the details. It’s time to be different and have a Creative Abstract design walking around in your shop, or actually get out on the runway and compete with your work of art! Come and have a little fun with Adriane Pope.
SATURDAY SEMINARS Looking out for #1! Groomer Health Issues Teri DiMarino
It’s no secret that pet styling is a physically demanding profession. We like what we’re doing, and most of us hope for long grooming careers. However, there are things that can make grooming uncomfortable at the very least, if not impossible. Back, neck, and shoulder problems abound. Respiratory illnesses are not uncommon. Repetitive motion disorders plague us, and many oldtimers are wearing hearing aids. Many of us think we are “Super Groomers” and these physical ailments will never happen to us. Think again! Teri will share simple ergonomic techniques, sanitary procedures, and safety measures that should be in place in all salons to prevent issues that can cut your career short.
“Bad” Dogs Deserve to be Cute Too Markie James
In this class, Markie James will go over the needs of the pets we don’t always look forward to seeing on our schedule. She will discuss safe handling techniques, the large variety of restraint tools available in the pet care industry, and how and when to use them. When is it ok to try and when is it ok to just say no? She will also discuss “molding” an appropriate clip for the pet and their behavior. It is important to have clear, honest, and compassionate communications with the owner of a difficult pet, with the goal of establishing a regular (and happy) grooming schedule.
SATURDAY SEMINARS Splash of Creative, No Dye Needed Alyssa Kasiba
Do you want to add creative touches to your salon menu but don’t know where to start? Alyssa Kasiba of ABC’s Pooch Perfect will show you how to get creative with accessories—NO dye needed. Dipping your toes into the world of creative does not have to be scary! Alyssa will push your fears aside and show you ways to put a creative touch on every groom. Accessories are a simple way to add revenue to your salon, and with proper marketing, clients will request your creative touch.
Cocker Spaniel Pet Trim
Troubleshooting Employee Issues
Cocker Spaniels are a popular, affectionate breed, but they come with a high-maintenance coat. The gorgeous, wavy double coat is elegant in the show ring, but is not practical for the everyday pet owner. Scott Wasserman will demonstrate how to keep some of the main features of the Cocker without the commitment of a full-blown show coat. He will also teach you how to achieve an easy-to-maintain cut that pet owners will drool over!
Do you feel like you keep hitting a brick wall managing people? Does it leave you questioning having employees? If yes, then this seminar is for you! Denise will discuss some of the most common problems that employers run into with having employees. This seminar will also help you strategize ways to confront them head on and move forward to a stronger team.
Meow, Wow! with Dana: Live Feline Grooming Demonstration Dana Chavez-Rey
No two feline grooms are the same. Dana will do a live cat grooming demonstration and talk about the differences in trims. This class offers you safe alternatives to working with cats and modified techniques based on feline temperament. Dana will also cover a brief but careful look at sedation for our cats.
The Art of the Intake Form Corina Stammworthy
Learn how to write a bullet-proof intake form and protect yourself from customer complaints, pricing disputes, and miscommunications. You’ll sleep soundly at night knowing you are safe from superfluous veterinary bills, bank charge backs, and insurance claims. This is a must-see class for any groomer that runs their own business.
Scissor Work 101 for the Everyday Groomer Jay Batista
Bring your shears for this informative and interactive seminar! Jay Batista will start with the shear basics, including different types of metals, convex vs. bevel, and what type of shear to use for each coat type. He will teach you how to maintain proper posture, and how to handle your shears ergonomically to reduce strain on your hands and body. Jay believes that the secret to a perfect hand-scissored cut is snipping at a consistent pace. Practice pacing to a metronome with your own shears during this seminar and you will return to your salon with a new skill!
Getting to the Root of it All: Addressing Skin Issues
Calling Out Marketing Narratives... The Good, the Bad, and the B.S.!
There are so many tools and products groomers use that manipulate the skin without us realizing it. Everyday processes such as drying and clipping could be causing skin irritation if they are not done correctly. The amount of heat being applied to a dog with underlying skin issues can cause flare-ups. Janice Fehn will discuss how to properly care for your irritationprone clients so that they leave happy and healthy each visit. She will also give you tips on how to properly manage these skin types in your salon, and how to educate the client on managing them at home.
This seminar includes an entertaining and informative discussion about shampoo marketing narratives throughout history and their claims and latest trends. You will view example videos and text illustrating how far off track things have gotten, and also identify reliable resources for fact-checking and learning about ingredients. Dave will teach you how to become a more savvy shampoo shopper based on one’s unique product and ingredient preferences.
Janice Fehn, CMG
