WIRE LOCK SYSTEM

The wire-lock is a new system invented by Grivel for safety carabiners. The system is made by a solid gate with a small wire behind it. The strength is given by the solid gate, and the wire keeps the gate in its closed position. To open it, you have to pull the wire to free the movement of the solid gate. As the twin gate, it does its job quicker and safer than the traditional screw gate, when it is closed, it is always safely closed and cannot accidentally open in any situation. The lighter wiregate is less likely to vibrate and flutter open than a simple solid gate.

TAU CARABINER

ROLLER S + ROLLER L The idea allows you to clip the carabiner directly into the required point: an anchor or a harness, or to haul a heavy load. Two sizes L and S both with the fantastic twin gate safety system.

S

L

CLEPSYDRA S + CLEPSYDRA L

L

S

The main problem with the belay carabiner on the harness was always to keep it in the correct position. Same problems in rappelling. Grivel has designed a totally new carabiner where a simple second wire gate isolates the belay loop and keeps the proper orientation, both with and without the rope, even when the carabiner gate is open. Totally automatic operation. Now the classical Clepsydra has a lighter and smaller version to be used where every gram counts!

CAPTIVE Cross-loading happens when a carabiner is stressed on its minor axis. Carabiners are strongest when stressed on their major axis, directly in line, vertically, along the spine. When a carabiner is stressed on its minor axis it’s generally one third as strong. The second difficulty happens when the carabiner “turns” on the rack or into the quick draw and became very complicate to clip or unclip the connerctor. The new Grivel Captive solves all of these problems!

THE KNEE - NEW FOLDABLE SYSTEM FOR POLES

The CARRYABINER is an ice screw holder, that fits all harnesses on the market in a stable and secure way. It carries up to 6 screws or the ice tool, it has a nose on its top to select the screw you need. But it is also a real carabiner, hot forged, CE approved, that you can use in case of need.

SHARK SHOVEL A revolutionary new shovel design: a light alloy shovel with an aggressive front blade in stainless steel. The special front blade makes all digging deeper and easier. It improves the efficiency, concentrating the force at the point, for deeper penetration. Stainless steel protects and reinforces the front part in light alloy, which would be very weak without it. It also makes an excellent dead man anchor to progress safely on snow slopes. It is also very useful to couple the front part of the skis for an emergency stretcher.

CONDOR

The new Grivel system for poles is an innovative foldable system for quick deployment and compact packing. The system, which we call “the knee, connects each section of the pole with the next one. It is secured by a plastic-fiber slider that firmly protects the knee and reinforces the pole. Reducing the size of the pole for compact storage and packing has never been so simple and fast.

SKITOUR NEW MATIC

FLAME

The new SKI TOUR crampon, with its New Matic binding system, solves the problem of fitting modern ski-touring boots and also the new models with round toe parts without the front groove. With Grivel proactive antibott system. Front part 6 points in steel, rear part with 4 points in light alloy. It comes with a Grivel Crampon safe.

RAN RAN is an anti-slippery device suitable for trekkers or trail runners to walk on snow or icy terrain. Very simple and efficient binding system in adaptable silicon rubber and stainless steel chains. Comfortable even with running shoes. 26 steel spikes to cover completely the sole of the shoes. Delivered in a useful bag. Warning: Ran is an anti slippery device and is NOT a crampon for alpinism. It is not a PPE.

THE ICE AXE WITH THE WOODEN SHAFT

The adoption of crampons in the early 1900s allowed the shaft to be shorter, and the new steels made everything lighter, but the shaft was still made of ash. In the 50s the ice axe reached the highest mountains of the world, then all 8000 meters summits, always with its aged ash shaft.

On the summit that has been reached with difficulty, the alpinist raises his axe: this is the gesture that tells his efforts, the overcoming of the dangers and the joy of being at the top. The ice axe is even higher! This is the picture he will show to his friends. Since the beginning, the portrayal of the alpinist is with his ice axe, it does not matter what is in the background! The presence of the axe says it all.

1840 A pick, an axe, a piece of wood and a metal tip: this is how the tool that will go with scientists, explorers, and alpinists around the world was born. It was born at the foot of Mont Blanc, where alpinism itself was born. It was born form the hands of blacksmiths, used to hitting the iron after having heated it up to “cherry red” colour in their black workshops. The shaft must have been a wooden stick like those that were used by the people of the mountains to go around in the snow and help themselves to carry heavy loads.

2000 Grivel is the oldest living manufacturer and it feels the responsibility of preserving this tradition. If modern ice axes have much better technical and mechanical features, no tool can compete in beauty and elegance with the traditional wooden ice axe. Wood is comfortable to hold, it is warm and it smells like the woods. Therefore Grivel (the only one in the world) continues to make the traditional, very traditional ice axe, with its nice ash shaft. Of course the Monte Bianco ice axe conforms to the CE norms and it can be safely used.

1870 Then the adze became horizontal, like in the pick, and not vertical like in the axe. The shaft was made in ash, strong and elastic, most suitable for this use. Strong and with vertical fibres, without knots, aged at least two years in the fresh air of the mountains. The ice axe was in the hands of the guides who went with the alpinists and helped their ascent cutting steps into the ice, like the 354 steps in the “Mur de la Cote” to help Marie-Henriette d’Angeville reach the summit of Mont Blanc in 1838, or like the 3.000 steps (that is 90.000 hits of the ice axe) for the ascent of the Grosshorn! You need a long shaft for a strong hit.

PIOLET D’OR The prize called “Piolet d’Or” was created in 1991 by Guy Chaumreuil and Jean Claude Marmier with the GHM and Montagne Magazine. It rewards every year the most important alpinist achievement, decided by an international jury. It has become a fundamental point of international activity and, beyond the prize itself, it shows the evolution of alpinism and its message. Our ice axe has 18/8 gold plated head and spike, and CE norm wooden shaft. It is delivered in a wooden box and it is 65 cm long. In the picture: Walter Bonatti and Reinhold Messner, the first two winners of the Piolet d’Or Carriere.

A well known system which relies on a nylon speed lever at the rear and a stainless steel front bale to hold the booth.

The plastic harness system is hinged from two front posts which retain the boot securely even if it has a shallow, worn front welt or overboots are beign used.

Both front and rear plastc harnesses are hinged from their respective retention posts and may be “opened to facilitate attachment to the boot, then closed securely once the boot is inside.

The front binding fits modern plastic ski touring boots and it is not guaranteed for traditional mountain boots.

FOCUS

GRIVEL PROACTIVE ANTIBOTT = EXTRA SAFETY The snow that builds up beneath the crampons could be a very dangerous problem.

The Grivel proactive antibuilding plate is the ultimate solution and a safety system. The first idea of a protective system was the Foot Fangs designed by Mike Lowe in 1972.

In 1997 Grivel was the first to deliver all the crampons equipped with an efficient antibott designed by New Alp.

In 2003 the proactive Grivel antibott made the ultimate system. It remains the more efficient and the only one working in all snow condition. It is a real safety system. Patented

PROTECT YOUR SPINE

GRIVEL SHIELD

To be easily tolerated by the climber a climbing fall requires two factors: the resistance of all the elements of the safety chain (rope, carabiners, protection etc) and their ability to absorb part of the energy released in the fall. The harness is practically static and transmits all the remaining energy on the thighs (that absorb it well), around the waist (that absorbs well enough) and on the spine where all the microtrauma add up creating permanent effects. For this Grivel has developed the GS composed of a half-shell semi hard to better distribute the forces, coupled inside with a special honeycomb material able to absorb most of the energy without transferring it on the spine. The back of the climbers thanks!

The POSEIDON is a special harness for mountaineering, expeditions and ice falls. It is the first waterproof harness! The Dry technology used in the ropes is now used also on the Poseidon harness. No more wet legs loops nor wet waist belt on your body! • Web-Core technology • Dry treatment for wet conditions • Simple leg lopps, thin and light, totally removable from the harness. • 4 adjustment buckles. • 2 sizes • Simple and comfortable

The system, which we call the knee, connects each section of the pole with the next one. It is secured by a plastic-fiber slider that firmly protects the knee and reinforces the pole. Reducing the size of the pole for compact storage and packing has never been so simple and fast.

The Mont Blanc has been for a long time the best test lab in the world. It has been very good and comfortable because it is just outside our door. Today though, new technologies and materials require more modern design and control. Our products are now thoroughly tested one by one, and those who do not pass the safety standards are rejected. The good ones go under a laser marker who prints on them the batch number, the certification data and the production date. The final product doesn’t need only the technical features, it also needs the essence: why it has been developed like it is. This is the real “added value” of producing in the mountains to satisfy the needs of those who climb the mountains.

WE ARE QUALIFIED

47

TOWARDS 200 YEARS

1818

IN THE GRIVEL FAMILY OF BLACKSMITHS STARTED TO TRANSFORM THEIR PRODUCTION OF AGRICULTURAL TOOLS TO SATISFY THE RATHER PECULIAR DEMANDS OF A NEW BREED OF WEALTHY TOURISTS WHO, FOR UNFATHOMABLE REASONS, WANTED TO CLIMB THE MOUNTAINS!

1936

IN , IN COLLABORATION FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH THE COGNE STEELWORKS, AMATO GRIVEL, LAURENT’S YOUNGER BROTHER, USING THE CHROMOLLY ALLOY (NICKEL-CHROME-MOLYBDENUM), CREATED A REALLY STRONG GRIVEL CRAMPON, THINNER AND THEREFORE LIGHTER.

THE ENGLISH ENGINEER OSCAR ECKENSTEIN WAS RECEIVED WITH SIMILAR SKEPTICISM WHEN IN HE ASKED HENRY GRIVEL TO MANUFACTURE THE FIRST MODERN GRIVEL CRAMPONS.

1909

1982

IN A NEW MANAGEMENT LED BY GIOACHINO GOBBI WAS CONVINCED THAT OVER A HUNDRED YEARS OF TRADITION, THE BRAND NAME AND THE COMPANY’S LOCATION WERE A RECIPE FOR FUTURE SUCCESS.

2009

1929

IN , HENRY’S SON LAURENT MADE THE BRILLIANT INVENTION OF THE TWO FRONT POINTS, ALLOWING CLIMBERS TO STAND FACE ON WHILST ATTACKING THE STEEP ICE AND SNOW GRADIENTS. THIS INNOVATION WAS THE KEY TO THE CONQUEST OF THE LAST UNSOLVED ROUTE OF THE ALPS: THE NORTH OF THE EIGER, 21-24TH JULY, 1938.

1996

THE MACHINE: THE GRIVEL ICE AXE THAT REVOLUTIONIZED THE DESIGN OF TECHNICAL TOOLS. FROM NOW ON THIS WAS THE SHAPE THAT ALL MANUFACTURERS WOULD USE.

2003

IN GRIVEL CRAMPONS RESOLVE THE PROBLEM OF SNOW BUILD UP UNDER CRAMPONS WITH THE FIRST PROACTIVE ANTI-BALLING PLATE.

IN MAY THE COMPANY OPENED A NEW PRODUCTION UNIT IN A MUCH BIGGER SPACE, ALLOWING TO MANAGE DIFFERENT LINES OF PRODUCTION, TO AUGMENT FLEXIBILITY RESPONDING TO DAILY NEW DEMANDS FROM AROUND THE WORLD, AND WIDEN THE RANGE OF PRODUCTS AND MAINTAIN AN AVANT-GARDE POSITION IN THE MARKETPLACE. SINCE 2010 THE NEW LOCATION HAS ALLOWED US TO SWITCH TO A TOTAL SOLAR ENERGY FUELED PRODUCTION, CLEANER AND MORE ECOFRIENDLY. EVERY YEAR THEY SAVE 1,173 BARRELS OF OIL!

We make products that our customers have to rely on, with quality and safety as ultimate goals, based on our experience and optimizing our “Made in Italy”.

Innovation drives us forward but our roots are in Grivel’s long history, dating back to the foundation of the company in 1818.

Based at the foot of Mont Blanc it is essential for us to respect the enviroment. This comes through the use of renewable Energy for production, and a constant search for enviromental-friendly technologies and recycled materials.
