Bella

Welcome to Griffith Regional Theatre’s Season 2018 – A Feast for your Senses!

We are very proud of our new program – which traverses a wide range of cultural experiences – and invites our patrons to open their eyes, their ears, and their hearts – to truly absorb the wonderful theatrical experiences before them. In 2017 we adopted a new MISSION: To be recognised as a vibrant, inclusive hub for the performing arts... which educates, enlightens, inspires and excites. Our program embodies that vision and with new theatre groups for primary school, high school and adults, plus local choir performances, workshops and the return of MY FEST youth arts festival, there will be plenty more local faces gracing the stage, and we will also premier some home-grown material. Griffith is renowned for its cultural diversity and we are committed to reflecting this on stage. Our drama program is especially strong– with WARBOY –the heartbreaking stories of young men in the First World War; STOLEN –a powerful story of the impact of removal of Aboriginal children; JURASSICA – a tale of migration, identity and family in Italian and English; and Letters to Lindy – based on letters written to Lindy Chamberlain over 30 years. We have some magical theatre experiences guaranteed to delight ALL ages. The fabulous Fruit Fly Circus presents JUNK – a boy goes back in time to when childhood was much more adventurous, and the enchanting CREATURE - retelling the classic tale of Dot and the Kangaroo – with stunning 3D projections, breath taking aerials, and Indigenous story telling. Add some opera, Shakespeare, a bit of Flamenco and tap dance, mischief and mayhem from Monkey Baa and Shake & Stir, concert piano, comedy, slot cars, and a wild street party and parkour performance to launch the new skate park – and we guarantee we have something to suit your taste. Enjoy the Feast! Raina Savage Manager

friday 16 march 7.30pm "This will be a comprehensive look at the past unto the present. I’ve sifted through all of the Australian Crawl material with the intention of performing it 'songbook' style. And to bring out the solo material again and reimagine those songs acoustically is always fun - I’m very excited about these shows.” Late in 2013, James Reyne played two sold-out shows at The Basement in Sydney, exciting fans with a new live offering, A Crawl To Now. Showcasing a broad selection of Australian Crawl tracks plus songs from his time with Company Of Strangers and his solo hits, the acoustic trio brought the house down. With a self-confessed desire to keep up a hectic touring pace, Reyne is poised to take A Crawl To Now on the road, playing right across the country through this year. co-opera presents

TheBarber of Seville

an opera buffa by G. Rossini

sunday 25 march 5pm

“….. there is the sheer joy and sensuous pleasure of music, so I’m really excited to open my time with Co-Opera conducting Rossini’s hilarious and exhilarating The Barber of Seville.” - JOSH VAN KONKELENBERG, MUSICAL DIRECTOR

Hooray! Hooray! The Barber is coming. Co-Opera is coming to town! For centuries in Europe this cry rang through the villages, towns and cities, but it was the performing groups known as the Commedia dell’Arte that were bringing entertainment to the people. There were high brow plays being performed in the big city theatres, but even these had an element of the Commedia. Stock characters such as the greedy old miser who wants the rich young heiress as his wife, the stupid doctor or lawyer who muddles everything, the cowardly boastful soldier, the young lovers and of course, the simple, cunning and much loved servant who manages to match-make and ultimately bring a happy end to each trouble in the world; all create the stories that even today we recognise and that can be seen in The Barber of Seville. Featuring guest appearance by local choir.

Creature

An Adaptation of Dot and the Kangaroo Adapted by John Romeril

friday 18 may 6.30pm saturday 19 may 12pm Not just a work for children – this is the most beautiful and original piece of theatre to touch the stage this year… Creature is an astounding new children’s theatre work based on Ethel C Pedley’s iconic Australian classic Dot and the Kangaroo. It features breathtaking aerials and acrobatics, stunning 3-D projection work, beautiful songs and luminous text – and explores Indigenous connection to country coupled with a deep love for the Australian landscape and its animals. 5-year-old Dot is lost in the bush and is rescued by a kangaroo who gives her magical “berries of understanding” that allow her to understand the language of all the creatures around her. The revelations she experiences change the way Dot views the Australian bush forever. Meet our Indigenous flora and fauna, a myriad of quirky creatures in their natural habitat, the beauty and fragility of the bush. But how long before this unique native wildlife disappears as humans encroach on their habitat? Creature invites you to enter the magical world of the Australian bush to explore how our actions affect the animals.

Stolen interweaves the stories of five children taken from their families – Ruby, Jimmy, Shirley, Sandy and Ann. Their stories are from different times and different places, but the five characters interact with each other as if their experiences were shared. Theirs are the stories of many. With a background in dance, Wiradjuri director Vicki Van Hout’s acclaimed production is vibrant and inventive, with playground-inspired choreography, a rhythmic soundscape and an eerily colourful yarn-bombed tree as a key feature of the set. Letters to Lindy

by Alana Valentine

saturday 21 july 7.30pm

“Exquisitely touching… Detail upon detail is woven into a finely stitched masterpiece.” - AUSTRALIAN STAGE Letters to Lindy paints a singular portrait of the heartbreak, wisdom and resilience of a grieving mother and her 30 year fight for justice. This stunning work by award-winning playwright Alana Valentine explores the public’s relationship with one of Australia’s most iconic figures. A mother accused of murdering her child, her claim – that the baby was taken by a dingo – denied and discredited by zealous police and a flawed legal system. The media circus, the rumours, the mob mentality. Over three decades the public wrote more than 20,000 letters to Lindy Chamberlain. From sympathy to abuse, these letters traverse the gamut of human response to her story. Letters to Lindy draws on this correspondence, as well as extensive interviews with Lindy herself, to create an enthralling, moving, and long overdue dialogue between Lindy and the nation. Directed by Darren Yap, with an acclaimed performance by Jeanette Cronin.

the song company presents

Four Colour Seasons

The Seasons, The Sky, and The Gumleaves in music from Antonio Vivaldi to Alice Chance

sunday 23 september 5pm

Song and indigenous dance to match the patterns and movement of the many Australian seasons. An elegant and inspiring performance to celebrate the 30th Year anniversary of the National Contemporary Jewellery Award, hosted by Griffith Regional Art Gallery. Following the movement of our planet around the sun, the weather changes and nature responds in colour and shape to the wind and the rain, the shadows and the sunshine. The traditional four seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter have been depicted in European art and music for centuries, but the Aboriginal experience of the seasons is a much more varied and subtler story that tells of the patterns of animal and plant life and their direct impact on survival. In this sympathetic synthesis of two artforms, The Song Company is joined by a duo of dancers from The Thomas E.S. Kelly Project to trace the course of the Earth’s annual journey in movement and song, both old and new. This performance will be at Griffith Regional Art Gallery. Numbers strictly limited.

A Monkey Baa Theatre Company Production

Josephine Wants to Dance

Based on the book by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley

tuesday 25 september 11am (schools) tuesday 25 september 6pm

"They show kids how ideas and characters can be translated from one artform to another. They take them on an adventure of the mind and spirit." JACKIE FRENCH A story about dreams, believing in yourself... and a dancing kangaroo. From Monkey Baa’s award-winning team comes the hilarious tale of Josephine -the kangaroo who loves to dance. Her little brother, Joey, tells her that kangaroos don't dance, they hop – but Josephine continues to point her toes and leap through the air. When a ballet troupe comes to Shaggy Gully Josephine peers through the window as the dancers rehearse. Then Josephine practices all night – she spins, she swirls, she pirouettes. When the prima ballerina twists her ankle who could dance the lead role? A delightfully funny tale that looks at the importance of believing in yourself and realising your dreams.

A Red Stitch Theatre & Critical Stages Production

Jurassica

By Dan Giovannoni

wednesday 26 september 7.30pm

“Jurassica has been patiently crafted, like Nonna’s perfect slow-cooked pork” – THE AGE Jurassica is a heart-warming story of family, migration, language and growing old told beautifully in both English and Italian. It’s also about dinosaurs - but not necessarily those from pre-historic times. Ralph and Sara migrated from Tuscany in the 1950s to their concrete-front-yard house in suburban Moorabbin. Their son, Ichlis, never really forgave them for his misunderstood name, and grandson Luca is struggling to talk to his father or grandfather. Until one night Ralph is rushed to hospital and, through an unlikely connection with Kaja, an interpreter who herself fled wartorn Belgrade, Luca learns to reconnect. Dan Giovannoni’s magical play weaves the past and present together, exploring what it is to migrate, to be displaced and to spend the rest of your life searching for home. Most of all, this is a play about the importance of family and about mending fences before you grow too old.

bell shakespeare

Julius Caesar

By William Shakespeare Director James Evans

saturday 29 september 7.30pm "Bell Shakespeare’s latest offering is sure to be the crowd pleaser that audiences have come to expect from the trail blazing theatre company."- ARTS HUB Brutus is suspicious. Cassius is conspiring. Caesar’s days are numbered. Loved by the people, Caesar’s power is growing – which is dangerous if you live in a world driven by ego and idealism. Those that rise too fast must be dealt with. For the good of the country. For the good of those who wish to be rulers themselves. Julius Caesar is Shakespeare’s political thriller, a masterpiece of intrigue and treachery. Stand witness to the assassination that leads to a life and death struggle for power in the Republic. Citizens mutiny, Mark Antony schemes, and the fate of Rome hangs in the balance. Bell Shakespeare’s Associate Director, James Evans, directs a production that is seething with rage, leaving audiences breathless at how quickly violence reveals the fragility of democracy. Starring Kenneth Ransom (Gods of Egypt, Belvoir’s Prize Fighter) as Caesar, and featuring Ivan Donato (Richard 3), Emily Havea, Louisa Mignone, Nick Simpson-Deeks and Russell Smith. Experience the tension between aspiration and ambition, the triumphal entrances and brutal exits, as it is all laid on the line for Rome.

Compañía Pepa Molina

Bush Bailando saturday 20 october 7.30pm

“Flamenco like you have never seen it before!” PARRAMATTA RIVERSIDE THEATRES, SYDNEY Bush Bailando interlaces four genres from the flamenco song family tree, linking them to the four elements; water, wind, earth and fire, in an exploration of bilateral heritage and identity, inspired by Australian nature. Bush Bailando is a new Flamenco dance work conceived and performed by Pepa Molina. Molina draws inspiration from the natural environment, in a collaboration with renowned Spanish Soundscape Designer/Composer Hector Gonzalez Sanchez who is inspired by the sounds of the Australian bush and its fauna, creating a multilayered sound that reflects the search for Australian identity. This is contrasted by the powerful and hypnotic flamenco guitar of Marco Van Doornam performing his original creations live alongside instrumentalist Stuart Vandegraaf. Visceral flamenco deep song is drawn from timeless recordings of the past, resembling the reminiscent echo of Andalusian Spanish heritage embodying a sense of displacement.

tickets Advance (ends 5 October 5pm) $30 Member $20 Adult $35 Concession $25 U18 $15 Duration: 60 minutes (no interval) Workshops: Flamenco Guitar & Dance workshops available. Contact Theatre for details.
