According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the North Atlantic had 20 named storms above the average of 14.4 between 1994-2020. After a brutal 2023 hurricane season, it seems that 2024 may have another brutal storm season in store for us. Experts predict that the 2024 hurricane season will be a hyperactive one for the Atlantic. (Source: 13NewsNow)

The 2024 Hurricane Season

NOAA’s Hurricane Predictions

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Predictions for the 2024 Hurricane Season, there is an 85% chance for an above-normal season. This is expected due to several factors, including near-record warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic, the development of La Niña conditions in the Paci c, reduced Atlantic trade

winds, and decreased wind shear, all of which generally promote tropical storm formation.

NOAA also predicts that there will be a range of 17-25 total named storms with winds of 29 mph or higher. Of these named storms, approximately 8-13 are forecasted to be hurricanes.

Probability of Impact by State

The CSU Tropical Weather & Climate Research has used NOAA’s Historical Hurricane tracking website and selected all named storms, hurricanes and major hurricanes from 1880-2020 to provide the likelihood of a hurricane impacting the states below during the 2024 season.

Florida 96% Georgia 82% North Carolina 85% Virginia 65% South Carolina 76% Alabama 78% Mississippi 72% Louisiana 84% Texas 80%
