PRELIMINARY INTRODUCTION This document is not a final plan; it is a clear statement of the manager’s will and a clear market necessity which has been detected, so the Board of Events of Vic may take into consideration the project in question. *Legal warning: This document belongs to the Wood and Furniture Worker’s Guild; distribution and replication by any means without the consent of the owners is strictly forbidden.


1. WHY? Interest towards sustainable construction in timber is becoming a growing tendency in architecture, interior design, construction and material production professionals, as in society in general.

PARIS AGREEMENT Against climate change (April 2015), the Agreement intends to limit global warming by two degrees Celsius and demands effor ts to cut it down to 1,5.

EUROPEAN STRATEGY 20/20/20 Intends to bring Europe to the path of a sustainable future, with an economy which will generate few carbon emissions and consume less energy and resources. As of 1990, the EU agreements to achieve this goal are:

CATALAN STRATEGY FOR BUILDING ENERGY RENOVATION (ECREE) The Catalan government agreed upon the ECREE on the 25th February 2014. The ECREE, which brings together work developed previously by the MARIE Project, with previous effor ts by the government, organizations and associations to develop the contents of the accords of Construmat 2013 and the Organization Forum (to which the Guild belongs).

• Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% (30% if an international accord is reached). • Reduce energy consumption by 20% through a higher energy efficiency, and also, to cover 10% transpor t necessities with biofuels. • Promote renewable energies up to 20%.

# Society is turning its eye towards sustainability and local products. Timber is not an exception.

Throughout the last century we have not had any reason to question steel and concrete as the essential structural materials in large buildings. However, we have arrived to a special moment in history, where climate change is bringing about now environmental regulations which are imposed upon the building sector and bringing to question the way we have constructed until now. Constructive solutions in timber have the potential to revolutionize the building industry through high quality sustainable development, generating wealth and local economy, helping to minimize climate change.

WOOD AND THE ENVIRONMENT

WOOD AS A MATERIAL

• Wood is a renewable and undepletable resource, when correctly managed. • Wood alleviates climate change, absorbing atmospheric CO2 in its interior. • It is produced using sunlight, with no fossil fuel consumption. • Its residues are biodegradable, with no environmental impact. • Wood may be reused and recycled widely, and at the end of its life cycle produces clean energy. • Forests control soil erosion and contribute to the water cycle.

• It is lightweight and strong; it is the construction material which reacts better to fire. • It offers excellent physical proper ties: thermal insulation, acoustic and electric insulation... • It resists aggressive, salty and corrosive environments. • It promotes design, innovation and improves production and regard of nature.

THE WOOD CYCLE • From the moment a tree is born in the forest, it absorbs CO2 and generates O2. It generates an ecosystem with a high landscape and biological value. • Forest exploitation contributes to a sustainable development and maintenance of resources and ecosystems, promoting local and rural development. It keeps forests clean, reducing the risk of fire. • The material which the forest provides is a local produce. Its transformation requires very little energy, and its applications are uncountable.

WOOD IN CONSTRUCTION • Wood allows prefabrication and modular construction, developing most of the work in the workshop and greatly reducing the building process on site. • It helps regulate indoor humidity levels. • It generates comfor table, warm and friendly spaces, with a very low weight. • It responds exceptionally well to fire. • Wood buildings may last hundreds of years. • It allows to save energy in all phases of the construction process.

2. MISSION To bring together current knowledge on sustainable construction in timber, with the growing demand for this technology, at a professional level and a social level.

3. VALUES WOOD IS HUMAN HISTORY AND A PROMISING FUTURE: Without wood, you and I would not be here. We would probably still be in the Paleolithic... Fire to cook or to cast metals would not have been possible, we would not have developed agriculture or navigation, there would be no ar t, or great constructions.

HONESTY Wood has been with us throughout human history as the most honest material. Texture, color, warmth, controllable evolution... wood remains alive every time we touch it with our hands. Wood is felt, is smelt, it allows good memories, and connects our most ancient tradition with the most sustainable future.

SUSTAINABILITY Against global climate change, more wood! Hundred per cent recyclable. The forest produces O2 and wood stores CO2 (CO2 and energy balance in its fabrication and use of main construction materials: to improve social conducts of positive bonding and respect towards nature, cooperation is a necessity.

COOPERATION AND CLUSTERING

TERRITORY

We work together to achieve complex projects, creating value systems with various sectors. The cooperation of different actors in a same project is the best way to innovate.

We work for Catalan Km0 Wood (local, traceable and sustainable). 67% of the Catalan territory is forest of every quality, use and possibility. In the last 10 years, the forests of Catalonia have grown 7%, and still expanding. The forests which are not adequately managed are the most likely to stage a forest fire. The whole of society and people living from wood must be informed and provided of this knowledge, offering a quality and upgraded education.

INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY We look to the past to imagine our future. Wood allows the most simple and classical of treatments to the most sophisticate uses. The path to creativity associated to wood continues with the eagerness of the people who innovate, design and invent new applications for wood, or in the hands of woodworkers who craft every day.

WORK AND BUSINESS Wood and the uncountable jobs linked to its production, transformation, distribution, placement, design, education, maintenance, restoration, etc., are the main available resources to activate occupation in our country. We are working to develop the CONSTA SEAL, a registry of companies engaged with good commercial practice and legal and transparent occupation. Wood enables an ample margin for business development and jobs in our territory in the near future.

EDUCATION Young apprentices who will soon become great specialists. Excellent professionals who gather and conduct the talent of young people who want to work with wood in its multiple applications and possibilities. Between experience and creativity. Professional education and continued training, with the recognition of the high competence of the professionals in our country are par t of the strategy to promote a good future in the wood sector


4. STRUCTURE A) THE CONGRESS A1. MASTER LECTURES Local and international renowned speakers will explain for two hours about their specialty. There will be no questions from the public, even though they can be written so the person who moderates can read them publicly so the speaker can answer them. Star ting from these lectures, new themes and questions will arise which will begin or encourage the debate of the work groups. Note 1: Renowned speakers will attract interest in people related to construction and timber. Note 2: In the case of international speakers, they will be translated simultaneously.

A2. DEBATE AND WORK GROUPS Description: Coordinated work groups which are directed by an exper t on the subject who conducts the conversation. Method: There will be 5 simultaneous groups in each turn (1h30min turns), clearly differentiated from one another in the subject they adress. There will be an initial presentation/conference and after an open round for questions and debate. Par ticipants are limited to 30 persons. Once the debate is finished, thematic conclusions will be reached. note1: Option of a foreign language group? English? notae2 : Option of the expert conducting the debate being one of the lecturers.

5. AUDIENCE Throughout the history of construction, wood has been one of the main materials. As time went on, other materials have displaced it and the once common use material has become an interesting unknown which many dismiss for fear of lack of knowledge. This event intends to be a meeting place for all kinds of people, from enthusiastic exper ts to curious beginners who decide to enter the world of timber construction, searching to bring this natural resource to the whole of society. It is because of this that this should be a significant event which addresses technical and also social acts, which can attract a wide audience.

We will also search for the economic collaboration of the involved administration to reduce costs. THE WOOD AND FURNITURE WORKER’S GUILD of Catalonia acts as a guarantee for the economic viability of the event.
