In the spirit of reconciliation, we, as members of the Terrace Family, acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Peoples of our Nation. We acknowledge, respect and give gratitude to the Traditional Owners of the Countries on which our campuses are located.

We pay our respects to Ancestors, Elders, and leaders of the future as well as to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members of our Terrace Family. We value the knowledge of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and recognise and honour their stories, cultures, and achievements as we walk together for mutual liberation and a truth-telling history for all Australians.

Inspired by the Touchstones, we are called to be people of knowledge, humility and wisdom who walk in solidarity with the First Peoples of our Nation for reconciliation, justice, equity and healing.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear members of the Terrace Family,

Welcome to the first edition of the Terracian for 2023. It has been refreshing to commence the school year without the disruptions and restrictions seen in the last few years.

This edition is filled with stories and acknowledgements which highlight the diversity, expertise and dedication that exists within our extended Terrace Family.

The beginning of every school year at Terrace includes a number of important gatherings and rituals, including the Year 12 Induction Liturgy - always a special day for our Year 12 students and their families. On 7 February the College also hosted the annual Scholars’ Assembly which saw over fifty of our 2022 Year 12 students return to the Campbell Centre to be recognised for their outstanding academic successes. College Dux, Dane Ball, along with the other 33 students who achieved an ATAR of 98.85 or more and those students who placed first in subjects were in attendance. Continuing the theme of academic success, 382 students from Years 6 – 12 received academic medals for their results in Semester 2 2022 at the recent Academic Medal assembly. These events provide further confirmation of the strong academic culture that exists at Terrace.

The 2023 GPS season is well underway and in this edition of the Terracian, we review the GPS Head of the River Regatta and the Inter-House Swimming Carnivals. We also learn more about Year 5 Camps and the Year 9 Waterford Journey Ceremony.

The Gregory Terrace Old Boys’ Association continues to forge strong links with the College and also maintains strong connections with Old Boys scattered around the globe. The President’s Drinks and the 2023 AGM are two successful events held by the GTOBA recently, with strong numbers seen at each. Congratulations to the recently re-elected GTOBA President Mark Christensen and the 2023 GTOBA Committee – I look forward to working closely with the GTOBA again this year.

After several false starts, the Red and Black Cocktail Party was held on 18 March and proved to be a tremendous community event. It has been several years since the Terrace Family has been able to gather together, and the Cocktail Party was a great way to celebrate what has been a positive start to 2023.

Sadly, we have lost a number of our Old Boys over the last 12 months and their passing was acknowledged at the GTOBA AGM. I would particularly like to acknowledge my uncle, Brian Carroll (GT 1946) and Dr Paul Bartley (GT 1961) who were amongst those remembered at the Mass. May they Rest in Peace.

I hope that you enjoy this edition of the Terracian as it again highlights the richness of talent and diversity that exists within our Terrace Family.

God Bless.

TERM 1 RECAP

It’s been an exciting first term at Terrace for 2023. From our new Year 5 students beginning the journey of a Gentleman of Terrace, cooling down at the Inter-House Swimming Carnival, and seeing our 2023 College Captains receive their badges and being inducted all the way to our sporting and cultural achievements across the GPS board. Term 1 has been a very successful beginning to the year. Take a step and see it for yourself.

YEAR 12 OPENING MASS AND INDUCTION

The Opening Mass allowed us to remember that the year promises us new beginnings, a time to let go of the past and embrace the future with hope and optimism. We were reminded that we are all part of a larger community and that by working together, we can achieve great things.

On Friday 27 January, parents, caregivers, Year 12 students and House Deans gathered in the Campbell Centre for the Year 12 Induction Liturgy. College and House Captains were presented with their badges and all Year 12 students were presented with their Senior badges. The badges are reminders that they are all leaders of the College and they stand on the shoulders of those who have come before.

Each new year brings opportunities and anticipation of what is to come. Each student brings their hopes and dreams for the year. On the morning of Friday 27 January, we gathered as one to celebrate all of our hopes and dreams at the Opening Mass. As Catholics, we believe that through faith and prayer, we can find hope, peace and love in our lives. We were reminded that we are never alone and that God is always with us, guiding us on our journey.

For our College staff, this ritualistic time is a reminder to re-engage with our core mission as a College, which is to commit to the formation and education of young men. For our Gentlemen of Terrace, it is a time to remember to seek out being the best that they can be this coming school year. As a whole Terrace Family, our College Opening Mass and Year 12 Induction Liturgy signifies solidarity as we embark on another exciting school year ahead together.

During the Opening Mass, Fr Anthony Mellor led a spirited homily in response to the powerful Gospel Reading, the Parable of the Mustard Seed. As we observe ‘Humility’ as the College value for the year, Fr Anthony’s homily reminded us of the importance of humble beginnings, that from little things big things can grow. For our Gentlemen of Terrace, the start of the year is just the beginning from which great potential can flourish and expand. Our hope for this first term is to see our Gentlemen of

Terrace sow purposeful learning habits and be in tune with their wellbeing, which in turn will lead to transformative growth as the year progresses.

‘It is like a mustard seed which at the time of its sowing in the soil is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet once it is sown it grows into the biggest shrub of them all and puts out big branches so that the birds of the air can shelter in its shade.’ –Mark 4: 26-34

4 The Terracian 2023

‘The Terrace story is one that stretches back over 148 years. It can be seen in our Reconciliation Artwork. It can be heard at Tennyson. It can be felt in the corridors. It is evident at Maroon. 2023 is our chance to add to this story.’

Thomas Robinson, 2023 College Captain

‘The Year 12 motto, ‘Take a Step’, will mean different things at different times to different people. Yet in every situation, we all have the opportunity to take a step. Ultimately, it comes down to you pushing your boundaries and doing what is right rather than what is comfortable.

I ask the College Community to boldly walk with us on this journey and commit to taking a step. Ask and we will give, seek and we will come looking, knock and we will be open to each other.’ – Thomas Robinson, 2023 College Captain

Thank you to all the members of St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace, who worked together to bring this celebration to life.

Along with our Opening Mass and Year 12 Induction Liturgy, our first week back was particularly special, as we were able to start the year together with some normality and no Covid restrictions. It was a joyous time to see many smiling faces reunited together after the holiday break. We are looking forward to what 2023 brings to us all.

Terrace 5
St Joseph’s College, Gregory
College Captain, Thomas Robinson, shared with his peers his sentiment for the year to come and the role each individual plays in contributing to our whole Terrace Family story. During the Year 12 Induction Liturgy, Thomas also launched the Year 12 motto for 2023 ‘Take A Step’. He encouraged his Year 12 cohort to find the inner strength, leadership and integrity to take a step.

SCHOLARS ASSEMBLY

The recognition and celebration of our Senior students who receive the highest possible academic achievement is an integral part of building and sustaining the cademic culture at Terrace. The adage ‘you cannot be what you cannot see’ underpins our deliberate recognition of student academic achievement. In February of each year, we welcome back our previous senior cohort to celebrate their academic achievements in front of the current student body.

The Scholars Assembly has taken on much greater significance in recent years, as the structure of the ATAR external assessment program precludes the awarding of the College Dux, Proxime Accessit, and subject Duxes. These significant academic awards are now presented in front of the entire student body.

For the 2022 Senior cohort, 33 students received the prestigious Scholars medal for attaining an ATAR score of 98.85 or better (equivalent to an OP1). This cohort attained a median ATAR result of 92.60, the best outcome in the ATAR era for Terrace. Furthermore, 65% of the Cohort attained an ATAR of 90 or better.

Laurence Healy Memorial Prize, the Blessed Edmund Rice Award for Dux of the College Laurence Healy GT 1935 began studying for the Priesthood in 1939. His life was tragically cut short in a car accident that same year. Those who taught Laurence, reflected on his extraordinary academic ability, with an article in the September 1939 Terrace Quarterly Review, referring to him as “one of the most brilliant of Terrace’s scholars”. It was therefore appropriate for his name to be linked to the premier academic award.

Furthermore, the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) awarded the following students with Certificates of Commendation:

¥ Ryan Campbell

¥ Blaise Delforce

¥ Connor Dwyer

¥ Nikolas Edmunds

¥ Jayden Jap

ACADEMIC MEDAL ASSEMBLY

On Tuesday 14 February, 382 students from Years 6 -12 were awarded Academic Medals for Semester 2, 2022, which represents 25% of our student body. These Gentlemen of Terrace worked exceptionally hard last year, developing effective study routines and habits which led to such strong academic results. There were 128 gold, 142 silver and 112 bronze medals awarded. Of the 352 recipients, 46 students received a medal for the first time, making it a momentous and very special occasion for the young men and their families.

We congratulate all Academic Award recipients and encourage all Terrace students to continue to work to the very best of their ability.

HEAD OF THE RIVER

Wyaralong Dam was a flurry of excitement at the GPS Head of the River Championships on 11 March 2023, the most highly anticipated event on the rowing calendar. With 22 crews competing, Terrace was proud to take home 16 podium finishes and wins in the Year 9 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th Quads, Year 10 1st Quad, and Year 11 1st and 2nd Eights.

10

THE CALLING CEREMONY

This term, Year 9 students participated in their first ritual as part of the new Waterford Journey program. The Calling Ceremony is a call for young men to embark on their journey towards adulthood. During this short ritual, students and their families gave thanks and showed gratitude for their young man’s childhood and accepted the call to journey. As a community, our young men were recognised as having completed their childhood, and have now embarked on a new journey, the path to adulthood.

Rites of Passages have been lost over generations. When young people lack access to intentional and meaningful rites of passage, they initiate themselves – usually with activities that are high risk –and don’t usually fit within what is culturally acceptable.

The Waterford Journey hopes to offer our young men a rich and meaningful formation program, aligned with our Gospel Values and identity as a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition, to support our young men as they journey on the path to adulthood. The program is based on and supported by Andrew Lines’ The Rite Journey program, which has successfully supported thousands of young people across the world during this pivotal transition in their life.

Throughout the year students will be part of the Challenge Program, that is aligned with our service ministry, culminating in our longstanding Immersion Program. Additionally, students will journey with an adult mentor chosen by their family, and finish the year participating in a solo camp with a homecoming ceremony to recognise all that they have achieved throughout the year.

Having a clear and intentional Rites of Passage program for young people is crucial in helping them engage with community values and skills, that will equip them to be adults of conscience and consequence in our world.

GPS MUSIC SHOWCASE

As the Music Captain of Terrace, I have had the privilege of participating in the GPS Music Showcase for the past few years. It is an annual event that brings together students from GPS schools to play music and perform alongside some of the best musicians from each school. While it is a busy day with lots of work to be done, the overall experience is filled with gratitude, enjoyment, and learning.

“The opportunities to experience life through music that Terrace has given me has been powerful beyond words.”

I became involved with Terrace Culture when I first joined the college in Year 5. I was attracted to the program because I had heard so much about Terrace’s great cultural success, as well as the school’s mission to create a supportive and inclusive environment for all students. I wanted to be a part of a community that valued that success, commitment, and excellence.

One of my favourite Terrace Cultural memories was the first GPS music day I participated in. I was 2nd Bassoon in the Symphony Orchestra. Before the day began, I felt so nervous as I knew no one else sitting near me and was afraid I would be called on to play my part individually. However, the lead bassoonist, a senior from Brisbane State High, quickly became a friend and mentor, helping me through the rehearsals without a scratch. Walking onto stage, I was

very nervous, as I was supporting the lead bassoonist in a famous solo. However, once we all started playing, my fears disappeared. It was an incredible feeling to be playing music with so many talented musicians from different schools. We all had a common goal: to make music, and have a good time doing it.

In the 2023 GPS Showcase, as the Terrace Music Captain, I had pledged to make the impact that Brisbane State High School lead bass had on me all those years ago. If we are to continue the culture of beautiful music in our world, we must pass our knowledge over to younger, less experienced musicians, so that when we leave, the sound of music may continue to prosper.

Starting when I was just four years old on the piano, music has always been a part of my life. Over the years, training in classical piano led me to a love-hate relationship with the culture. However, experiencing the foundations of the Terrace music program, that hate was swept away. The opportunities to experience life through music that Terrace has given me has been powerful beyond words. Days like the GPS Music Showcase, have allowed students such as myself, to prosper in their own way, creating everlasting memories which we may share with those around us for the rest of our lives.

GPS Music Showcase is an experience I will not forget.

GPS SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

After two terms of training, a holiday clinic and plenty of Friday morning breakfasts, the Red and Black Swimming team finally hit the pool on Friday 3 March at Chandler for the 2023 GPS Championships. Leading into the meet, Senior Captains Lachlan Hilleary, Tate Connors and Magnus Paust-Porter had their fellow Terracians filled with hope and excitement, the swimming program hopeful of it’s best return at the GPS in over a decade. What ensued was racing with real passion for the College, students eager to do themselves and the roaring Red and Black supporters proud.

For the Senior Championships, it was a day to remember for Year 11 student Ike Martinez. Ike won all three of his individual races, the maximum number one can participate in individually. Making his feat all the more impressive is which races he swam, the 200m Individual Medley, 50m Butterfly and 200m Freestyle. Backing up these efforts, Ike also swam in the 6x50m Open relay team, which finished 3rd. Congratulations Ike on your extraordinary achievement.

Steering the Seniors towards 3rd Place overall was a number of terrific induvial and relay performances. Congratulations and well done to the following students, who finished first in their respective races: Max Ford, Ethan Dent, Isaac Wilson, Jack Moore and the U16 6x50m Freestyle Relay team consisting of Harrison Tolhurst, Ethan Dent, Archer Mann, Caden Rieger, Jethro Gallagher and Jack Moore.

The Junior team finished in a commendable 6th place overall. Congratulations to Frederick Creagh and Theodore Thiess who both won races. There were a further four 2nd places, and 11 3rd place finishes in the juniors.

Third place is the College’s best result at the Senior GPS Championships since 2007. It is a testament to the commitment, hard work and leadership displayed by the students in the program, and the tireless efforts of the coaches, coordinators and Swimming Support Group. Well done to all involved, and good luck in the 2024 season!

TERRACE JAZZ NIGHT

The annual Terrace Jazz Night was held in Treacy Court this year under the stars and an array of colourful umbrellas. The space was filled with energy and colour as our talented students, staff and special guests took to the stage and marched the pavement. The Terrace Jazz Orchestra, Terrace Jazz Combo, Big Band 2, Big Band 3, and Big Band 4 all performed as part of the evening’s entertainment.

SPORT UPDATE

Term 1 GPS Sport has been busy but enjoyable. To parents and students your efforts and commitment to your individual sports and the broader program are much appreciated. The participation rates continue to be extremely high, with over 1150 boys competing for the College in Term 1.

This term we are farewelling two long-time members of the Terrace Support Groups. Rowing Support Group Chair, Scott McGeever, and Cricket Support Group Chair, Matt Jackson. Both Scott and Matt have given untold personal time and investment into both programs, while supporting other parents and Directors of each of these sports. They have left both sports in a much better position for their selfless involvement.

We look forward to Term 2 GPS Sports: football, tennis and cross country. Everyone has been working hard behind the scenes with preseason training and will continue with numerous camps and clinics over the Easter holidays – we thank parents and students for giving their time for the best preparation for Term 2.

The Terracian 2023 16

Cricket

Terrace had 41 teams competing weekly in the GPS Cricket Competition in 2023, with over 500 students and 80 coaches involved in the program. It is the largest cricket program in GPS. Tennyson is at capacity each Saturday for the 9 rounds of competition, even during the bye round. We have seen some fantastic cricket from Year 5 through to our Seniors, who are representing the College in their final year. There have been 9 centuries throughout the GPS season and 6 five-wicket hauls which are tremendous achievements, and milestones applauded in all forms of the game.

The season commences in Term 4, with skill development sessions, specialist sessions, and competitions such as the Powder Finger Cup and St Joseph’s College Cup. Along with tours to Adelaide and camps at the Sunshine Coast, summer clinics, trial matches and preseason training are all part of the cricket season. Terrace cricket continues to be a leader in the sport throughout the competition, both with onfield performances and opportunities for the wider range of students. At our annual season launch, students were presented with their 50 game caps, celebrating students who have shown a commitment to the game at the College over a 5-year period regardless of what team they represent. The Cricket Support Group would like to thank the wider cricket community for supporting the cricket lunch, which is back on the calendar after an enforced break due to covid.

Cross Country

Cross Country competitors have been working hard since Day 1 of Term 1 this year. It has been pleasing to see the engagement down at the tunnel on MondayThursday mornings. Led by the Senior Leadership Team of Tim Bliss, Ryan Lincoln and all other contributing Seniors, we have created an environment that is hardworking, passionate and positive. The sheer number of boys coming down is a testament to the positive environment the Seniors have set. The team started the season at Nudgee College in week 8 of Term 1 with the remaining meets in Term 2 before the GPS Cross Country Championships in Term 2 week 5 of Term 1.

Rowing

The 2022-23 Rowing season started with much doubt. There were questions on: how the program would commence with the state of the Tennyson boat shed and equipment post the 2022 floods; the loss of key figures within the program, and the general feel of uncertainty of what 2023 would hold. However, the key message given to all was resilience, and looking back it seems the theme was well fitting. With the combined efforts of key stakeholders, and the sheer will and energy of the boys, coaches, and parents, the Boat Shed opened. All be it in a semi-agricultural way the program commenced, and the boys showed their true spirit and passion for the sport.

The preseason saw several new training initiatives and full squad-based workouts, that helped foster a culture of inclusivity and performance. As the season progressed, more utilities came back online, and the arrival of several new boats helped see the energy shift towards a competitive early season.

To test speed early, Gregory Terrace successfully competed at the Queensland Grade Championships in December and followed that with the Queensland State Championships in January. Placing 5th as a club overall and the highest-ranked school in the event, it was great to see the College Boat Club participate in such high numbers at these events. The boys were showing their ability, and the momentum progressed through to the early regatta season, with several crews taking out victories and podium finishes consistently. This momentum carried through to Head of the River where the Gregory Terrace Boat Club lined up with a

total of 22 crews competing, 16 of these crews took out a podium finish with wins in the Year 9 1st Quad, 2nd Quad, 3rd Quad, 5th Quad, Year 10 1st Quad and year 11 1st and 2nd Eights. It was a notable achievement to take out the top boat in three of the four age groups.

Results aside, I come back to ‘resilience’. What I am most proud of being associated with this great program is the boys, coaches, and all stakeholder’s resilience. We did not use the early concerns to define the season and create excuses, but rather focus on creating good structures, practices, and processes to ensure that all boys were able to participate and compete to the best of their ability.

Thank you to everyone involved, the season is a shared success amongst all and a compliment to all. We have been blessed with an exceptional coaching team and I am truly grateful for their support. To the boys, gentleman, well done. The season has been a pleasure, and I look forward to watching you progress through the program!

Tennis

The Tennis pre-season started with the annual Age and Open Championships. The number of students involved in the competitions was high, with over 120 in the age groups and 95 in the opens. These championships act as the start of the season and lead into the pre-season College program that started in Week 8 of Term 1. There are tennis opportunities through our tennis partners Lifetime Tennis, a high-performance tennis camp over the Easter holidays for Years 8 through to 12 at Caloundra, all before we start the season on the first Saturday of Term 2. The program would like to welcome Mr John James, who is the new Head Coach for the College, replacing Mr Graeme Brimblecombe who accepted a new role at High Performance Tennis Academy for Tennis Australia. We would like to thank Graeme for his service to Terrace Tennis over his 10 years involved in the program.

Swimming

The 2023 Terrace Swimming season was a remarkable success, showcasing the talents of both the Junior and Senior teams. The Junior team finished sixth overall at the Junior GPS Championships, with the Under 10s coming in second, the Under 11s finishing fourth, and the Under 12s in seventh place. The Senior team achieved a phenomenal third-place finish overall, which is particularly impressive given the tough competition in the pool.

The team leaders for 2023, Captain Lachlan Hilleary, ViceCaptains Tate Connors, and Magnus Paust-Porter, chose the season’s theme ‘Making Waves’ and the team certainly lived up to that theme, both in and out of the pool. Notable performances on the junior team included Frederick Creagh, who claimed two first places, and Theodore Thiess, who finished first in the Under 10 50m Freestyle.

The Senior team also had some impressive performances, including seven individual first places and one relay victory. Ike Martinez put in a true ironman performance, finishing first in the 200m Individual Medley, first in the Open 100m Butterfly, and first in the Open 200m Freestyle, against some of the highest-level competition, including many State finalists. Max Ford won the Under 15 50m Freestyle in a brilliant time of 24.53. Ethan Dent was superb in the Under 16 50m Backstroke, winning in 29.19. Isaac Wilson won the 100m Breaststroke in 1.07.69. Jack Moore showed the technique and power required to win the Under 16 50m Butterfly in 25.98. The Under 16 Freestyle relay team of Harrison Tolhurst, Ethan Dent, Archie Mann, Caden Rieger, Joe Gallagher, and Jack Moore, claimed the only relay victory, edging out Brisbane Boys’ College and Nudgee College.

Volleyball

The 2023 Terrace Volleyball Program saw 312 students, at all levels, participating and giving their all week in, week out. Preparations for the 2023 season began Week 1 of Term 4 in an 8-week preseason program, as a way to upskill and get the students’ match ready. The program extended over the Christmas holidays where clinics focused on re-teaching the foundations of volleyball, honing in on different skill sets, and getting the boys match-fit. The hard work put in during the pre-season was put to the test in two days of trial matches against Brisbane Boys’ College and Nudgee College. The 9A, 10A and 1st VI Squads were also able to attend the Australian Schools Volleyball Cup on the Gold Coast. This cup is one of the largest school sporting events in Australia, which saw our 1st VI progress well but ultimately lose a tight quarter final.

Our 1st VI started the season slowly, however found momentum off the back of a couple of dominant wins heading into their last game against Churchie. The growth of this squad both physically and mentally was on display throughout the thrilling five-set match where the boys’ resilience and courage were on display. Finishing 3rd overall, the College is very proud of the 1st VI squad, led by captain Harry McKim and Head Coach Mr. Ben Bell. With four winning rounds, the program enjoyed great success under the guidance of Coach Coordinator Mr. Cameron Young. A special congratulations to two of our best performing teams, the 3rd VI and 10B’s on a great 2023 season.

Thank you to all parents for a terrific 2023 Terrace Volleyball season and all of your support to the boys and the program along the way.

TITLE

KINGSTON VAITUSI –TERRACIAN TAKES ON THE WORLD

Over the Christmas holiday period, Year 10 student Kingston Vaitusi, proudly became the most recent international representative of the College. Representing Samoa in the 2023 Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) U17 Championship, Kingston and his teammates played hard for the chance to compete in the FIFA U17 Football World Cup.

A quiet and unassuming character in the surroundings of Spring Hill, Kingston is a different person once entering the sporting arena. Tall and athletic, the centre-back was already a First XI Football representative last year. However, the global game was certainly at new heights.

Played in Fiji, the OFC U17 Championships featured countries such as New Zealand, New Caledonia, Tahiti, Tonga and Fiji. Accustomed to playing against his peers in the U16 age group, Kingston said playing not only against national players who are a year older “was a really physical challenge against the other countries, physically harder than anything I’ve played”. How he played to combat their sheer strength was simple, “don’t keep the ball for too long,” he said.

While playing on the world stage, Kingston’s trip was about so much more than football. For Kingston, playing for Samoa provided the opportunity to connect with the ancestry of his father’s family side. Staying in Apia (the capital of Samoa) for two weeks, before heading to Fiji, Kingston was able to visit the Vaitusi family house. The house is the sacred burial site for his family members who have passed, spanning generations and hundreds of years. “There was a really strong spiritual connection- it’s impossible to explain and describe. It was very, very special,” he said. While he was already very in touch with his Samoan heritage, Kingston came away with a deeper understanding and appreciation for not only his family’s history, but where they are today.

“It was a bit of a wake-up call seeing how much they have, compared to how much we have here in Australia. If they were to walk into our facilities at Terrace they wouldn’t know what to do, they’d be speechless,” Kingston said. “Everyone over there was so happy though, even though they don’t have nearly as much as what we have here. It really showed me you don’t need materialistic things to be happy. Just be yourself and embrace what’s around you.”

Kingston and the Samoan team were able to make it through the pool stage, before falling to eventual finalists and U17 World Cup qualifiers, New Caledonia. While disappointed not to progress further, the pathway for Kingston is now the U19, U23 and Opens national teams. With an eye on the future, he hopes to play for Samoa as much as he can in the future.

Back in Brisbane, Kingston’s goal is to be captain of the First XI Football and to continue to strive to be the best player and person he can be. With high aspirations but a grounded perspective, the future certainly looks bright for Kingston.

INTER-HOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL

The College Inter-House Swimming Carnival is a highly anticipated annual event that starts the House competition for the year. The carnival is an opportunity for students to showcase their swimming skills and demonstrate their House spirit, while also fostering a sense of healthy rivalry among the nine Houses. Over two days in week 2 of Term 1, Barrett House proved their dominance once again by taking out the title of overall champions. The venue was Centenary Pool and events included 50m freestyle, cross pool relays and water polo. The day was filled with excitement and tension as the nine Houses competed against each other. Under the new format of four sessions, the passion of the House groups was obvious to see. Despite the fierce competition, it was clear from the beginning that Barrett House was the team to beat. They started the day off strong, winning the first few events and setting the tone for the rest of the competition. But what really set Barrett House apart was their spirit.

From the moment they arrived at the pool, they were loud and proud, cheering each other on and motivating their teammates to do their best. Their swimmers showed incredible speed and technique, leaving the other houses struggling to catch up. This victory is not just a one-time fluke for Barrett House. Over the past decade, they have consistently been the most dominant house in the Inter-House Swimming Carnival, winning multiple titles and establishing themselves as the team to beat. The day would not be possible without the work of the Director of Sport, Tony McGahan and his team, as well as the many staff that assisted.

HOUSE FRIENDSHIP GROUPS

Each of our nine houses have developed relationships with one or two house friendship groups. These relationships are founded on mutuality, whereby there is mutual liberation between the students in each house and their friendship group/organisation.

Throughout the year each House organises initiatives to raise money and collect goods for their friendship groups – this has already been evident with numerous fundraisers and collection drives occurring so far during lent. However, the relationship between the Houses and their friendship groups goes beyond fundraising. The boys engage with their groups through guest speakers, visits to the organisations, advocacy campaigns and immersion experiences. Each House has built a unique relationship with their friendship group/s, and the boys and staff take pride in ‘taking a step’ to partner with and advocate for these organisations.

Below is some information about each friendship group.

THE RED AND BLACK COCKTAIL PARTY

After three years of Covid interruptions, on Saturday 18 March, the Red and Black Cocktail Party was held at one of Brisbane’s most iconic venues, The Tivoli. From the red carpet lined with House flags, to the photo booth filled with College sporting and cultural mementos, there was no denying Terrace was coming.

The Tivoli was abuzz as the crowd of almost 500 entered the venue, greeted by circus performers and scenes of College life projected around the room. Brisbane-based band PocketLove provided a mix of anthemic songs to start the night, before College Principal, Dr Michael Carroll, took the stage welcoming guests to the first community event of the year. The 2023 College raffle winner was announced against a backdrop of sparklers and excitement, before PocketLove took back the stage quickly bringing guests back to the dancefloor. Hula-hooping performers weaved through the dancefloor where old friends connected, and new friendships were formed. The excitement in the air was evident, especially when Terrace’s very own Chemistry Coordinator, Ms Samantha Ackroyd wowed the audience with her spur-of-the-moment rap performance. Dancing continued into the night, as the crowd enjoyed a specially curated food and wine menu.

Thank you to everyone who attended the event and made it such a wonderful success. The College particularly thanks the organising committee, who over the past three years have battled many obstacles in getting the event off the ground. Thank you also to event sponsors, Terrace Ladies Group, Paywise, Madison Cleaning and Studio Kirby. Save the date now for the next College community event, GT on the Green – Saturday 14 October 2023.

GTOBA PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It’s hard to believe it’s April already. The GTOBA has been busy bedding down recently launched online initiatives, planning for our flagship events, coordinating reunions and increasingly recognising and celebrating the achievements of our fellow old boys in the community, on national and international stages. Our social media platforms have proven to be a great way for us to communicate this news amongst our community. If you haven’t already, I’d encourage you to ‘follow’ the GTOBA on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, to hear our news and keep updated on opportunities.

As is customary, we began 2023 with our AGM and Annual Mass. We had a terrific group of Old Boys and their families attend this special event. It was wonderful again to be joined by Br Buckley (GT1952), to have mass celebrated by Fr James O’Donoghue (GT1982) and once again beautifully complimented by the Terrace Choir.

We were also very fortunate to reunite with Br Michael Dredge (teacher at Terrace from 1972 to 1973). Prior to the AGM and Mass, Br Dredge produced a Christmas card with the signed names of his Year 5 class, from 1973. With a little assistance from our GTOBA Secretariat, each of the students identified from their signatures, was contacted. And it was terrific to see

some of those men reunite at the mass some 50 years on.

Our next event was the annual President’s Drinks, which we use each year to welcome the graduating class of the previous year to the GTOBA. It was a fantastic night, which sold out well in advance and saw over 200 Old Boys from the 1960s through to 2022, gather and reunite after months, years or decades, as the case may have been. A great way to start the year and fantastic to see so many of the class of 2022 involved.

Another recent occasion, was an extraordinary reunion of the Terrace and Nudgee First XV teams from 1966 at the main grandstand on Ross Oval. Thanks to Nudgee for the viewing of rare footage found of their GPS game from that year. It is thought to be the oldest footage that exists of any interaction between our rival Colleges and there was a great spirit still alive amongst the men from both schools on the day. Check out the GTOBA website to see the men battle it out 57 years ago, as well as pictures and other information from that day.

We have several events still to come throughout the year, including the GTOBA annual lunch scheduled for early June and the Brother Buckley Breakfast, targeting late August. Elsewhere in this edition of the Terracian, you will see the date claimer for our

reunions - I would ask for your help to spread the word with anyone you know in these milestone years.

Our online community platform (gtoba.terrace.qld.edu.au) continues to be the best place to go to catch up on all things ‘Terrace’ for our Old Boy Community. Thousands of Old Boys have already registered and begun to explore the history, terrific content and information. If you haven’t done so already, log in and check it out for yourself. Plus, if you are a young Old Boy, you should check out our Mentor Connect page – there are hundreds of Old Boys from many fields, that have volunteered to offer career advice to help you find your way and achieve your goals, and are available at the click of a button on the web page. Also helpful to our new members is the Jobs Board. It’s a fantastic new initiative of the committee and we look forward to rolling it out further over the year.

There is plenty going on: we are looking forward to bringing you another great year from the GTOBA. Look out for our communications by email and on socials, and I hope to meet with you at our events.

FOUNDATION CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

After eight years serving on the Gregory Terrace Foundation Board, the time has come for me to pass the baton on, making this my last report to you as Chairman. In reflecting on my time with the Foundation, I feel incredibly privileged to have played a small part in one of the Terrace’s most important functions. I have learnt a lot about our school and our community, and have enjoyed the interactions with many of the other volunteer groups, such as the Terrace Old Boys, Terrace Ladies Group and the School Advisory Council. I thank these groups for their incredible support and assistance over the years.

In 2022 we reached a new milestone: the most-ever funds raised in a year. Together our support for the College amounted to $1,960,507 with $1,284,109 to the Building Fund and $676,398 to the Bursary Fund. These gifts are so critical to our school, they allow us to achieve important projects that are not otherwise funded – ensuring that our school has first-class facilities and giving some deserving young men the chance to experience our amazing Terrace.

Overleaf you will see the humbling list of individuals, families, organisations and other Foundations who share the Foundation’s important mission. There is no way to adequately thank you for your generosity and support. However, each of our Foundation Directors and the College’s team hope through this, you understand how much we appreciate you and celebrate your giving.

As this is my chance to reflect with you, I must also acknowledge the wonderful volunteers who work behind the scenes to keep the Foundation moving forward. My experience has been that of a wellfunctioning Board, being supportive and visionary, and not afraid to face the challenges ahead. Nurturing our school’s philanthropic culture, effectively setting up our school to face the future requires confidence and commitment, a description that befits each Director who has served on the Foundation Board.

My whole-hearted appreciation for making my job as Chair easier. A very special thanks also to the Development Team, led by Ms Doreen Awabdy, for their commitment and dedication, not only to the Foundation but to all the aspects of Terrace life which often flies under the radar. We could not even hope to achieve our goals without you.

In my mind, the challenge for our Foundation is the challenge facing our school- reduced funding and higher pressure to maintain the ultimate student experience for our Terrace Gentlemen. What I do know, is that our belief in the Edmund Rice mission will continue to bring us together, to ensure our school will navigate the challenges ahead. With the Foundation’s focus, and an inspiring community strength, our philanthropic spirit grounded in our Catholic faith will continue to support our school to step forward with confidence. And to each of my fellow Terrace Family members, my plea is this- your gift, no matter what size, will make a difference.

In signing off, I would like to thank the Terrace staff and community for the wonderful experience my four boys have been given throughout their schooling life. I know they are so proud of their Terrace heritage, which has prepared them for the journey through life, and my wife Megan and I are incredibly proud of the Terrace gentlemen they have become.

Let the next chapter begin.

It has been both a true privilege and pleasure.

Thank you.
