anukkah kicks off the holidays early this year. The first night of the Jewish celebration is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Hard to believe, but true. Then, of course, there’s Turkey Day and Christmas, Kwanzaa and New Year’s Day. For the next two months, your apartment will see guests — maybe just a few drop-ins or

perhaps dozens for a party. You’ll put up the tree, string a bough of holly on the mantel and hang mistletoe in the foyer. Those choices are traditional — and certainly beautiful — but honestly a little boring. So to get you out of the greenery-and-ribbon rut, we hunted down the best ideas for putting a little pizzazz in your pad.

STudIO 54 REdux Toss the star or the angel; think Donna Summer and strobe lights. Okay, that’s a tad much, but don’t top off the tree with an ornament. Leave it bare and hang a disco ball from the ceiling instead.
BOy Oh BOa Gigantic fans and boa scarves intrigued the audiences of Gypsy Rose Lee, the late, great stripper. Now, feathers can wow your crowds. Make a wreath. The colors should be bold — red, purple, green. How about peacock feathers? Or craft a window hanging. Throw in ornaments for even more drama.

ThE Odd cOuplE Hanukkah is not the Jewish Christmas. Still, more and more interfaith homes are mixing the symbols of the holidays. And one is the tree. Put up a white artificial tree — or have a real one flocked — and hang blue, gold and silver ornaments.
WhIpS aNd chaINS Not exactly, but two tough materials together make one terrific stocking for the fireplace mantel. The stocking is faux leather; the cuff is Hubby’s old jeans. Sew on a few buttons. You can do it yourself or get one of your crafty friends to come to your rescue.
