In this issue’s Coastal Cuisine we share some tips on making homemade ice cream including a receipe. Reading about this sweet treat will have you running out for a nice cold cone. Maybe you find that family time includes watching the Blue Angels fly over the beach. Adventure Out tells us the history of the Blue Angels and some other interesting facts. T
he Grand Fiesta Parade is one of the largest events in Pensacola, and it takes a lot of planning, volunteers, and support to put it all together. On May 31, Emmanuel, Sheppard and Condon hosted a very special VIP Lot Party for all the sponsors who help make the Grand Fiesta Parade, and the entire week of Fiesta Celebration, the best it can be every year. Guests were welcomed with a special wristband for the event, and treated to food, refreshments, libations, and a little bit of shade before the final parade of the season. The 66th annual Fiesta Celebration featured an entire week full of events, beginning at Historic Seville Quarter on May 29, with entertainment, decorations and delicious food in five rooms, each saluting our history under the flags of the five governments that have flown over Pensacola. The Surrender of the City was held in Phineas Phoggs as local dignitaries such as the Mayor, Fire Chief, Supervisor of Elections, Escambia County Sheriff and Pensacola Naval Air Station Commanding Officer surrender the City of Pensacola and its citizens to DeLuna and his Queen for the Fiesta Season. As part of the anniversary celebration, festival organizers focused on reminding attendees of the origins of the festival and how it was designed to highlight the rich history of Pensacola. The festival began in the late 40s in an effort to promote both the historical significance of Pensacola and tourism.

F
iesta Pensacola hosted the 35th Annual Pensacola Crawfish Festival at their new location, Community Maritime Park, behind the Wahoos Stadium, April 26-28. This year’s festival featured over 15,000 pounds of crawfish, provided by Cordova Crawfish Company of Pensacola. Cajun dishes such as red beans and rice, boudin balls, seafood gumbo, étouffée, jambalaya, Cajun pasta and more were also available, including traditional festival fare. A children’s area was sponsored by COX Communications, and provided fun for all ages with sand art, hands-on crafts, face painting and a playground. An exciting update to the 2019 Pensacola Crawfish Festival was the addition of arts and craft vendors. For the first time ever, 30 local artisans and craftsmen joined the festivities showcasing their various talents. The vendor categories varied from paintings to photography, gourmet to jewelry, home décor to wall art and more. Fiesta celebrates our heritage, promotes tourism, and builds pride in Pensacola through festive activities which enhance the quality of life in Pensacola. Their mission is to encourage and help perpetuate in the minds of people, near and far, Pensacola’s rich and diverse history and continually foster pride and spirit in our community.

s an elite team of pilots known for their breathtaking stunts, precise choreography, and awe-inspiring speed as they fly through the air performing aerobatic stunts, the Blue Angels have long been a part of the fabric of America’s patriotism and pride, demonstrating just how amazing the pilots of our military truly are. Since their official formation in 1946, they have performed for more than 260 million spectators all across the nation, becoming one of the top American air shows for their ability to do the seemingly impossible and soar beyond imagination. Living in Pensacola, we’ve got a certain amount of pride that no one else has for this select team of individuals. This is their home base; this is where they land. This is where they do their fl ight-checks and run their practice maneuvers, where the sharp lines of their unmistakable blue outlines shatter the sound barrier and tear through the sky as they perfect every detail to the very last second. And each year after they traverse the country performing for audiences who have watched them for years as well as those of an entirely new generation, they come home to the people of Pensacola and give us all a thrill that chills us to the core and reminds us how proud we should be of our nation and our military. Highly dedicated to their craft, the Blue Angels fl ight demonstration team combines the very best and brightest members of the United States Navy and Marine Corps, bringing them together with one mission: to inspire wonder in all who see them perform, and they do it all without missing a move. Throughout the show, the Blues fly six F/A-18 Hornet aircraft, splitting into the Diamond Formation and the Lead and Opposing Solos, with most of the show alternating between signature maneuvers performed by the Diamond Formation and those executed by the Solos. It’s undeniably incredible

to behold, and that’s why so many people flood the fl ight lines each year in every one of the cities where they perform—and Pensacola is proud to say that this is where they belong. Here, we show them our support by turning out in droves to watch them, sitting through hours of traffic to get a glimpse of them in all their glory. And with good reason, as these select six are ours—our very own representation of the freedom that we fight for. In addition to the Blues, the Blue Angels Air Show will feature demonstrations by Fat Albert—the Navy’s own larger-than-life C-130 Hercules—as well as the highflying acts of Julian McQueen,

the Veterans Flight, Kevin Coleman, Gary Ward, Skip Stewart, and Redline, creating an astounding lineup of air-based wonders whose talents will keep your eyes glued to the sky and your jaw slack in amazement. Over the course of a special “Blue Angels Week” leading up to the airshow, have breakfast at 8:00 a.m. with the Blues flying overhead at the beach on July 10. July 11, watch flight demonstration practice runs beginning at 2:00 p.m. On July 12, watch the full dress rehearsal with the Blues and the civilian acts beginning at noon. Come early to the beach to get a prime spot on July 13—show time starts at noon, and the Blue Angels will make their grand entrance at 2:00 p.m. From loops through the clouds to adrenaline-pumping free-falls, the air show brings it all, making it the perfect way to get summer cleared for take off.

ron Plan Solutions Group hosted their 2nd Annual Charity Sporting Clay Shoot Tournament on June 1. This event went over so well last year, Iron Plan Solutions Group worked hard to make it even better this year. Lunch was provided at the tournament by Chick-Fil-A. Prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners were awarded, and door prizes were given away. Several games were available to participate in, and also a drawing for a Big Green Egg grill. All proceeds of the shooting tournament benefit the Hadji Shrine. The shooting tournament included teams of four participants, and individual participants were paired with other individuals to form a team. There were many friends and business owners in attendance who supported this great cause toward St. Jude Children’s Hospital. ay 23 the Pensacola Association of Realtors hosted Casino Night at Seville Quarter. This event is a fundraiser to support their program Realtor Political Action Committee. The Committee helps advocate for homeowners and focuses on encouraging members of their association to invest in political candidates that support any party who understands real estate issues. RPAC, which is the most bipartisan major PAC in the country, offers programs, grants and training tools to assist Realtors to help in their local community to advance public policies.

read and Table hosted their Croquet and Rosé on the Bay event at the Barkley House on June 1. Guests were invited to cheer for their favorite team, while ticket holders were treated to spectacular rosé, red and white wines provided by The Bottle Shop, locally crafted beers, food specially created by The Wine Bar On Palafox and delectable desserts provided by Blue Jay’s Bakery. Marty Stanovich provided the entertainment, as he added his own flair as MC of the event. Croquet teams were allowed four members each. In keeping with traditional croquet rules, all participants and observers wore white. Proceeds from the event benefited Feeding the Gulf Coast’s Children’s Backpack Program in a unique and exciting way. The mission of the Backpack Program is to meet the needs of chronically hungry children by providing them with nutritious and easy-toprepare food to take home on weekends and school vacations when other resources are not available. Feeding the Gulf Coast’s Backpack Program is located at elementary schools that have a high incidence of children in need. Each backpack site distributes a pack of food to each participating child on Friday afternoon.

pend even five minutes in Pensacola and you can see it: this is one city that fl ies high with patriotic pride—literally. From the Blue Angels that soar through the skies above us to the ships that pull into port, we salute the brave men and women who put their lives on the line everyday to defend our freedom and keep this country safe. Without the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard who fi le in rank and shout out their battle songs, our beautiful City of Five Flags would not be what it is today. And for the honor they bring us, we thank them. They’ve fought in countless wars and travelled worlds away, giving their time and sometimes making the ultimate sacrifice in service to us all. In this issue, we call upon all of our readers to join us in offering our gratitude to all branches of the Armed

Forces who protect and serve America today as well as those veterans whose years of guarding our nation have come to a close. For their selflessness, words are not enough. tyle is demanding respect this summer with a nod to military pride. There are many ways to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe, some being more obvious than others. If you want to take the more literal approach, invest in some camo clothing. This elusive print is popping up everywhere from denim camo skirts and shorts to structured jackets, loose fitting tees and comfy camo joggers. If you aren’t quite ready to ‘drop and give twenty’ and fully commit to camo, sporting the color scheme is a great baby step to army-crawl your way into the trend. Army green is a wonderful alternative neutral that can pull either masculine or feminine. A green utility jacket can be easily dressed down with distressed denim, simple knotted tee shirt and slip on sneakers. It also looks adorable thrown over a sweet floral dress with sandals or mules. Paper bag waist lines are all the rage, and a white body suit looks chic tucked into a pair of olive green paper bag shorts. Khaki is another color that can give an outfit a bit of military flair. Try pairing a white or olive sweater tank with a silky pair of cropped pants in a luxurious tan or wear a striped t-shirt with (dare I say the word...) khaki cargo pants! Slim-cut cargo pants can be both trendy and flattering, unlike their frumpy counterpart of generations past. Another way to salute your style this season is with red, white and blue. You can honor the stars and stripes by literally wearing them. Dainty gold star necklaces are being seen on celebrities and all over Instagram these days. With hair accessories making a huge comeback, try out combining trends with a star shaped hair clip. Represent the Navy and the Coast Guard with some nautical stripes. There’s nothing quite as classic as a crisp pair of white jeans and a navy and white striped boat neck top. Finish the look with gold accessories and a nude strappy sandal... you’re ready to hit the high seas in style. Patches and insignia showcase the rank and accolades of a soldier, but when worn on a denim jacket, it’s just plain cute. We are seeing a repeat of the patch trend from the 60s that then reappeared in the 90s. And if you need somewhere to put your extra patches, backpacks of all shapes and sizes are super popular right now. Whether they are canvas or leather, a backpack looks stylish with athleisure wear, casual clothes and even with a dress.

T
he 69th Annual Grand Fiesta Parade was presented by Fiesta Pensacola, sponsored by Beach Community Bank and Emmanuel, Sheppard, and Condon, and held on Friday, May 31 in downtown Pensacola. There were around 70 parade entries, including 40 to 50 floats, featuring many local Mardi Gras krewes, local businesses and sponsors, as well as bands and color guard teams from area schools. Local law enforcement members participated in the parade, as well as kept attendees safe during the event. Onlookers were encouraged to bring their kids to catch beads, hear the sounds of local high school marching bands, and enjoy watching beautiful floats parade through downtown. The parade followed the established downtown route from the corners of Spring and Garden, to the intersection of Palafox and Main. This is the last Mardi Gras parade of the season, and event organizers work to make it the biggest and best of the year. The Fiesta of Five Flags organization was formed to celebrate the founding of Pensacola. Fiesta plans and produces over 20 events throughout the year with the help of a plethora of volunteers. The full Fiesta Celebration is a 10-day heritage celebration, held the first two weeks in June, and is one of the oldest and largest heritage festivals in the State of Florida.

The Greater Pensacola Chamber of Commerce presented the ribbon cutting, and invited guests to enjoy opportunities to win door prizes throughout the evening. Pensacola Caring Hearts was also in attendance, and half of the profits from the event went towards their goal to nourish and empower individuals, families, and the community by ensuring access to healthy food, nutrition education, and advocacy for those at risk of hunger. Pensacola Caring Hearts also provides seniors, children, homeless, and veterans the opportunity to participate in programs, services, and activities to meet the diverse, social, educational, cultural, and recreational needs of the community. 5 Star Culture Company is an online marketplace dedicated to helping local small businesses and individuals sell their products online. Their main goal is to have customers support the hard-working people who make up the wonderful 5 Star Culture in northwest Florida. Andrew Schroeder created 5 Star Culture Company with the assistance of his good friend, Ford Kirkland; to give local and small businesses a way to offer their product to the world, via the internet, without spending all their creative time figuring out business regulations, internet protocols, or spending all their profit on obtaining these services.

he world famous Sandshaker on Pensacola Beach hosted the grand opening of their second location at the Wharf in Orange Beach on June 14. The Coastal Alabama Business Chamber hosted the event, and were on hand to present the official ribbon cutting. A chartered bus of 50 people came from the Pensacola Sandshaker to help promote the event, and over 200 people were in attendance. The four owners Beverly and Sonny Campbell, Janet Taylor, and Charles Boswell were on hand, and encouraged guests to enjoy complimentary delicious food prepared by Blue Water Bar-B-Que and Red on White Wine Bar. Live entertainment was provided by Cornbread and Class X throughout the evening’s festivities, as well as raffles for door prizes generously presented by local area businesses. The Sandshaker at the Wharf hosts live music every weekend, and various drink specials through the week, focusing on their well, wine, and domestic varieties, as well as the unforgettable Bushwacker.

scream, you scream! Who doesn’t scream for ice cream? When it comes to frozen treats, ice cream is at the top of the list. The first official record of ice cream in the United States dates back to 1744. However, ice cream was considered an exotic and rare delicacy until the 1800s. Today, ice cream is the best selling treat in America, right after cookies- and July is National Ice Cream Month, so we’re talking all things ice cream. When making your own ice cream, you need to start with a great base. Traditionally, ice cream is made with dairy milk or cream. However, milk alternatives have recently been growing in popularity. Whether it be a dairy intolerance or just a personal preference, there are several options for dairy-free ice cream. Soy, almond, and cashew milk are all popular bases for ice cream these days. Although ice cream is typically sweetened with sugar, honey or agave, and sweet alternatives like stevia are also becoming increasingly more popular. Vanilla is the most popular flavor in the United States, followed closely by chocolate, and then cookies and cream. Making ice cream at home has endless possibilities. With a simple ice cream base, you can add any ingredients you want. When the ice cream is churning, it’s best to keep It simple with spices and liquid extracts. Soft fruit like peaches or strawberries can be added during the churning process, as well. Thicker or harder ingredients like cookies or nuts should be mixed in after the ice cream has frozen.

INGREDIENTS • 2 cups half ‘n half • 1 cup heavy whipping cream • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 1/2 cup sugar
DIRECTIONS • Combine all ingredients in bowl, mixing well. • Pour mixture into ice cream maker -OR• Churn for 20-40 minutes or until desired consistency. • Pour mixture into air tight container and freeze until solid for a scoopable ice cream.
TIPS • Use this recipe for easy vanilla ice cream as a base to customize with your favorite flavors! Use 1/2 cup of a variety of mix-ins like chocolate chips, candy pieces or nuts. Add the additional ingredients to the vanilla ice cream after it has churned in your ice cream maker for at least 15 minutes. • Use a container with a tight-fitting lid to store your ice cream base for up to one week in the refrigerator.
There are so many options for ice cream churns and freezers. No matter your budget, you can make ice cream at home. An electric ice cream maker can be purchased for around $100, and a traditional churn that uses ice and rock salt starts around $35 dollars, whether manual or electric. If you aren’t looking to buy an ice cream maker at all, you can pour your ice cream base into a zip lock bag and place that in a larger zip lock bag with ice and rock salt and give it a good shake until the ice cream is frozen. On a hot summer day, nothing is quite as indulging as homemade ice cream. Take this simple ice cream base and make it your own. Experiment with fun flavor combinations like lavender and honey, chocolate with chilies, or balsamic and strawberries. So make the most of this National Ice Cream Month, and make some delicious homemade ice cream.

unday June 9th Blues on the Bay at Community Maritime Park in Downtown Pensacola hosted another great concert series featuring Classic June and Bring on the Benjamin’s. Blues Angel Music puts on this free concert series every Sunday in the summer. While enjoying the views of the bay and dancing your night away to wonderful local music you can also enjoy food and treats by 3-D Eats, Arepas Latin Cuisine and Flamingo Shaved Ice. Blues Angel Music is a local music store that not only sells and rents instruments but also has a fully staffed school of music. They also have a non- profit foundation called The Blues Angel Music Foundation that aims to make a positive impact on the greater Pensacola area. They help provide music education, scholarships, and music therapy. Money raised at the Blues on the Bay Concert Series goes right back to the community to help support their programs.

ay Grassroots of Northwest Florida hosted their Pensacola Pride Tea Dance at The Vineyard at 12th Avenue in East Hill Pensacola on June 16. The gorgeous outdoor space the vineyard offers was an absolutely wonderful host for this event, featuring several umbrella-covered tables to relax under, enjoy the fabulous menu, $20 drink and drown special, and of course enjoy the Pride festivities. This Tea Dance featured two different drag shows, with performances by Monica Hart, Glitter Dust, Janiylea, and Kendall Michaels. A raffle was drawn for a unique gift basket with items from several local businesses. Board members from Gay Grassroots of Northwest Florida were in attendance, and had Pensacola PRIDE 10th Anniversary shirts available for purchase, as well as tickets for the Celebration Banquet held at the Pensacola
Opera on June 22. Pensacola Pride showcased eleven events during the month of June to promote equality, inclusion, and a safe space for members of the LGBTQ community to network without fear or concern for discrimination. The mission of Gay Grassroots of Northwest Florida is to bring together non-partisan activists to advocate for full understanding, respect, equality and inclusion of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons living in northwestern Florida. Oasis Florida was on hand to provide free, 20-minute HIV testing, as well as information, and other protection and prevention methods. OASIS Florida is an HIV prevention and care organization dedicated to helping those who are affected by HIV/ AIDS and preventing the spread through education and awareness.

W
e have all heard the adage: “Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders.” This is certainly true as we see new, young and talented individuals entering the world of adulthood every day. Some people may be considered born leaders, but all teens in the Pensacola area have a voice and an opportunity to make their world a better place because of an organization that does nothing else but develop servants and leaders. Chain Reaction is the Teen Leadership Institute of Northwest Florida and was founded in 2003 by Kristin Fairchild. Since its inception, Chain Reaction has served over 5,500 teenagers. Chain Reaction enables teens to learn through avenues of service. Provided with a safe, fun, and empowering environment, teens discover their innate strengths and untapped abilities where they unite as a team of connected, committed citizens who believe in themselves and strive to achieve more, and aspire to see the good in all things. Chain Reaction clearly understands the multi-faceted importance of community service and has developed a means to pay it forward to upcoming generations. Chain Reaction turns teen potential into great talent for our community by helping them develop their soft skills and leadership abilities, build their civic resumes, discover their gifts and talents, develop their hearts of service, and get them thinking about and planning for life after high school. High schools is primarily focused on achieving good

grades to get into the college of choice, but a GPA is only one line on a resume. Chain Reaction want teens to be thinking about and developing the skills and experiences needed for their futures, and is providing an opportunity and means for them to become generous citizens and a strong future workforce. Additionally, teens in the program are exposed to different careers in hopes of providing them some future job choices and educational paths that they may not have otherwise been exposed to. One of the greatest parts of Chain Reaction is enabling the teens to put together the puzzle that is their future. Chain Reaction partners with local agencies and non-profits for the teens to carry out service projects while building their love of community service. Their time at Chain Reaction allows them to serve others, discover things about themselves and about the real world, all while building a resume of service that may help them with scholarship opportunities, interviewing techniques, and becoming an overall great citizen.

Interview with Isabella DiPhilippo Program Manager, Chain Reaction
What impact has Chain Reaction had on the Pensacola community in the last year?
Chain Reaction teens have had hundreds of leadership experiences and completed over 8,000 service hours in the last year. If a monetary value was placed on this, our teens would have made a $67,680 investment in the Pensacola community. This has led to our graduating seniors securing $1.4 million in college scholarships. Our teens worked on projects benefiting 11 different non-profits and organizations in the Pensacola area including Gulf Coast Kid’s House, Legal Services of Northwest Florida, and Pensacola Humane Society. How did you become involved with Chain Reaction?
I am a Maine native and a graduate of the University of Maine with a degree in political science and leadership studies. After graduating, I began searching for a job that would allow me to apply my leadership studies knowledge and impact others. I found Chain Reaction and was immediately drawn to its mission and work. August will be my one- year anniversary in this position and in Pensacola. Is the program styled in a classroom format or more practical/hands on work/volunteering?
Chain Reaction is a hands-on service and leadership experience. Teens come to the Chain Reaction Center and work on a service project of their choice alongside a group of their peers. The service projects are teen-designed and teen-led. The hands-on service projects allow teens to truly understand their impact on the organization they’re benefiting and how they are impacting the community. How do you discover each individual teen’s strengths to determine areas where they may thrive?
At Chain Reaction, we use person-to-person conversation to get to know our teens. Asking questions like “What’s your favorite class right now?” and “Are you enjoying Latin Club?” gives us insight into their worlds. We also focus on building teens’ self-confidence by providing them with the encouragement needed to believe in themselves. As staff, we are constantly watching how teens work, lead, and act. If a teen has no problem speaking in front of his/her peers, we see that public speaking is a gift of this individual. We also use our resume learning plans as a way to discover individual teen’s strengths. In our resume learning plan packet, teens answer questions like, “What do you want to do after high school?” and “What is your favorite subject?” and “What are your three professional passions?” These simple questions reveal a lot about the individual answering them.
Is there a staff or is Chain Reaction volunteer driven?
Chain Reaction has both a full-time staff and volunteers. While our staff is here day-to-day to teach curriculum and keep the organization running, our volunteers are a tremendous asset. They conduct exit interviews for our interns, grade teen resumes, help at our annual fundraisers, serve on committees, and serve on our Board of Directors. Chain Reaction operates year-round with membership running from May to May. Teens can participate after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays during the school year and five days a week during the summer. Is there a specific success story you can share?
Dina joined Chain Reaction as a high school freshman and she fell in love with the passion she witnessed in other members, which inspired her to use her own passion to benefit our community. “I used to be so eager to grow up because I thought the only way I could help my society was as an adult. Chain Reaction showed me that every single person has the power to change the world.” Dina created her own service project with the help of Chain Reaction staff called Leadership in Learning, focusing on motivating young children to love reading and learning with rewards and prizes for reaching learning milestones. After a year of planning, Dina helped Chain Reaction partner with C. A. Weis Elementary School to give learning kits to third graders. At the end of her membership, she graduated and received a full ride to Syracuse University. At Syracuse, Dina studied international relations and citizenship and civic engagement. She was designated as a 2019 Marshall Scholar, a Coronat Scholar, was a member of the Renee Crown University Honors Program, a 2018 Truman Scholar, and a 2018-19 Remembrance Scholar. Dina recently graduated from college and plans to work on immigration and education reform policy. Dina is a prime example of what Chain Reaction seeks to do. Helping teens develop soft skills and leadership skills, build self-confidence, identify their passions, grow a heart of service, and design and lead projects giving teens the foundation needed for future success. ay Grassroots of Northwest Florida hosted their 10th Annual Pensacola Pride Festival in the Park on June 15. A full day of live entertainment was available, featuring six musical acts including Cody Copland, Christina Alconcel, McDean, Boys Who Cry, Cory Harvard, and Wayward Sister plus the Red Carpet Drag Show. Over 50 vendors had tents on site, including local businesses selling goods, as well as informational services for local residents. Food trucks and drink specials were available, including wine, beer, and frozen treats. This was a family event, and leashed pets were allowed, inviting attendees to bring their blanket or chairs to get comfortable, and even spend the entire day. The mission of PensacolaPRIDE is to celebrate and promote the history, courage, diversity and worth of the Pensacola area gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons individually and collectively as the LGBTQ Community. PensacolaPRIDE also focuses on building a stronger local LGBT community by being wonderful hosts for thousands of out of town guests. All of the events during Pride easily serve as a way to introduce people to our local LGBTQ community without being overwhelmed. All the events presented throughout Pride week are designed so member of the community can feel as comfortable as possible, and encouraged to bring anyone along to enjoy the festivities.

he 2019 Fiesta All Krewe Ball was presented by Buick GMC Cadillac Pensacola, and held on June 6, at the Hadji Shrine Temple. All mardi gras krewes were invited to participate, and festivities included live music, performances, and a presentation of royalty from each krewe. The theme of the ball was “Around the World.� Several krewes presented a table with refreshments and snacks representing different countries and cultures. Each krewe had representative members competing in a dance contest, choreographed by LaVonne French. The King and Queen were represented from each registered krewe, and presented with a medallion of recognition.

he Greater Little Rock Baptist Church hosted their 6th Annual Pink Tea to support Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. All proceeds from the event go to the Pensacola chapter to benefit local people dealing with breast cancer. This year’s speakers were Dr. Ashley Chandler and Dr. Lusharon Wiley, a patient of Dr. Chandler. During the program, a “Strutt Your Pink Fashion Show” was held, allowing anyone attending the event to strut their fashion in support if the cause. Several area businesses provided gifts for door prizes, including Casks and Flights’ own John McCorvey, who was there in support of his mother. In addition, local “Quillow” maker Blanche Flintroy, has designed two beautiful quillows that attendees purchased tickets for an opportunity to win and take home. The American Cancer Society depends on Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events to raise awareness and funds to save lives from breast cancer. Making Strides events can’t happen without donations of time, effort, and dedication of volunteers. By walking in an event, raising funds, volunteering or forming a team, individuals can help the American Cancer Society find solutions through new treatments and support services.

Annual Luau to be Held for The Main Street Foundation
The Main Street Foundation is one of those good-feeling, hometown organizations that inspires an overwhelmingly authentic “good people doing good” vibe. Since 2012, our good friends at Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Main Street Properties have been fulfi lling Christmas wishes, slinging Manna food pantry bags, buying baseball tickets for veterans, caring for our elderly and just offering a helping hand to distressed families in our community. All this good-doing begs the question, is this really a real estate company - or something else entirely? We caught up with Audie Street and Holly Lovett, the owners of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Main Street Properties and the founders of The Main Street Foundation. Their explanation? “We’re not really a real estate company. We’re a relationships company in the real estate business. Building relationships, giving back to the community that has so embraced us, and spreading love and good cheer is critical to our vision - we want to be everyone’s favorite real estate company - and helping out where we can is just the right thing to do.” I have to say, it is inspiring in the world of business and its accompanying hyperfocus on return on investment, to encounter an organization with as much give-back attentiveness as this group. With over 30 service activities in any given year, (mind you, one of those was collecting over 12,000 pounds of food donations door-to-door) their hope is that they will inspire like-minded companies and individuals to get involved in making our community a better place. The idea that we can all make a small difference – be a catalyst for change – make this world a little better – drives this group like a powerful magnet and it’s just cool to witness. United Airlines Adds Daily Nonstop Flights Between PNS and New York/Newark
United Airlines has launched daily nonstop service between Pensacola International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport, with the inaugural fl ight taking place today, Thursday, June 6. With the addition of Newark, Pensacola International Airport now fl ies nonstop to 20 destinations. The inaugural fl ight was celebrated today with a ribbon cutting by Mayor Grover Robinson, the Greater Pensacola Chamber, Pensacola International Airport Director Dan Flynn and United Airlines representatives. “We are excited that United Airlines is opening the door for even more visitors to discover Pensacola and everything our great city has to offer, from our beautiful beaches and waterways to our rich history and vibrant downtown,” Mayor Robinson said. “The addition of nonstop fl ights from Newark, New Jersey to Pensacola International Airport is a testament to the continually growing interest in visiting Pensacola from destinations throughout the country, and we look forward to welcoming new visitors from the Newark and New York City area.” The Mayor’s Office and airport team have been working on fl ights to the New York metropolitan area for several years, so the addition of this route marks an exciting accomplishment for the City of Pensacola. The PNS route is one of 22 new routes
United Airlines announced it will add in 2019. Flight times may vary, but fl ights are scheduled to depart PNS daily at 3:25 p.m. and arrive at EWR at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Passengers will enjoy a two-class configuration aircraft.
Feeding the Gulf Coast Offering Free Meals to Children, 18 and Younger, All Summer Feeding the Gulf Coast is partnering with local community organizations to offer free meals to children, 18 and younger, this summer through the Summer Meals Program. The program is supported by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is designed to fi ll the nutritional gap that is left when children are out of school during summer months and do not have access to free or reduced price breakfasts and lunches at school. “Our goal is to ensure that all children have access to nutritious food during the summer. We know that parents do not always have the resources to provide healthy meals for their kids – that is where we come in to help,” said Cathy Pope, President & CEO of Feeding the Gulf Coast. “By offering free meals to summer programs where kids already congregate during the summer, we empower the sites to spend their limited resources on quality enrichment activities for kids, and at the same time ensure the kids have enough energy to learn and play.” This program has a significant impact on children and families during the summer months across the Central Gulf Coast. Last summer, Feeding the Gulf Coast served 87,321 meals to children in Florida alone, and nearly 351,336 meals to children across the Central Gulf Coast at area churches, schools, parks and community centers. The program reaches more children every year thanks to excellent community partners. he 70th Fiesta DeLuna Coronation Ball was held on June 7, at the Pensacola Bay Center. The coronation celebrates the founding of Pensacola by Don Tristan DeLuna, Pensacola’s first citizen, and is remembered each year during the Fiesta Celebration. The crowning of Don Tristan DeLuna y Arellano LXX, his Queen, and the arrival of the 2019 court is this year’s presentation in Pensacola’s rich history. The coronation consisted of the Master of Ceremonies, Fiesta Flag Bearers, Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem, Invocation, Introduction of Dignitaries, and the presentation of visiting and local krewes. The official Presentation of the Court of DeLuna LXX announced the Padre, Aide-de-Camp, DeLuna and Queen Royal Pages, Fiesta 2019 Queen, Pages, Princesses, and Knights from the countries of Spain, Britain, France, and America. Brent Lane emceed the event, providing detailed information on each position’s historical significance, as well as facts on the individual chosen to represent the position this year. The Fiesta DeLuna Coronation is the last Mardi Gras ball of the season, and it is the end of the Fiesta Days Celebration.

he Krewe of Lafitte hosted their Coronation Ball, featuring the crowning of Jean Lafitte LXV (65th) and his queen at the Pensacola Bay Center on May 18. The Bay Center was filled to the brim with members from all over the south who traveled to attend this coronation. The procession of past kings and queens was presented, as well as special guests from Springtime, Tallahassee, and Gulfport, Mississippi. The procession was followed by the announcement of the new Float Captains, Aide-de-Camp, and appointed Knights and Ladies of the Court. Jean Lafitte LXV, Sonny Campbell, and his Queen, Marla Courtney were announced, and all guests made their rounds to honor the new royalty for the upcoming year. A breakfast was served after the coronation, as guests were encouraged to dance the night away. The Krewe of Lafitte in Pensacola is the largest all male Mardi Gras Krewe in the Florida Panhandle. The organization was founded in 1954 to promote a means to celebrate Carnival. The 300 members enjoy a strong bond between themselves, and their families. Krewe of Lafitte participates in the parades with 12 lighted floats, two of which are used for traveling to seven out of town parades, ranging from Gulfport, Mississippi; to Bradenton, Florida. The Krewe also participates in three other local parades, specializing in an illuminated Christmas Parade for children. They also float around to schools, assisted living facilities, and retirement homes spreading cheer and happiness.

What is your hometown, what brought you to PENSACOLA and how long have you been here? I am a proud Pensacola native and love my hometown. I only moved away for a few years after college. I moved back to Pensacola in 1991, and will never leave again. What led you to choose this profession? I am from a huge military family. My father was in the Air Force and retired as an aircraft examiner aboard NAS Pensacola. I have 5 sisters, all of whom married military men. My brothers-in-law were huge influences on me as a young man. My personal experiences and passion for our military led me to develop 90
