letter from the Associate Publisher The first month of the year is always frenzied for me as we finalize taxes, close the previous year’s books, make unattainable New Year’s resolutions, and fail at remembering to use the new year when signing checks. I look forward to February as a month to settle in and decide what the year will bring. As I started thinking about February this year, I was a little perturbed, to be quite honest. The month is supposed to be fi lled with Love, Fat Tuesday, King Cakes, and our beloved Pensacola Mardi Gras. I quickly realized my normal February plans were about to change ... drastically. COVID struck again and started kicking Mardi Gras around, resulting in the cancellation of parades, krewe balls, and other festive activities and events. Instead of dwelling on what we cannot have, Pensacola said, hold my beer; we can figure out a way to have a little Mardi Gras fun. Welcome to the February publication of VIP Pensacola, usually fi lled with parade information, krewe parties, and Mardi Gras fun! You will find we kept Mardi Gras alive in VIP as you read this month’s issue. Some krewe’s managed to pull off Mardi Gras related activities. The Krewe of Daisy Dukes and the Krewe of Les Harlequins decided to find larger venues and held their balls. The planning was different as party masks included face coverings, hand sanitizing stations replaced bead tables, and social distancing between tables and chairs were required. The Krewe of Swat pulled off the Blues Pin & Bead Festival Diaper Drive and delivered loads of diapers to Gulf Coast Kid’s House. The Krewe of Les Petits Enfants, the annual Cordova Mall Ball host, was faced with a considerable endeavor to raise funds for their substantial annual non-profit donation without fi lling the mall full of people. On page 24, Give Care Share tells how this was accomplished as Les Petits Enfants and Ascension Sacred Foundation pivoted to a virtual event of an entirely different nature. The Mardi Gras theme continues on page 18 as Coastal Cuisine shares a Feast Fit for A King with Hurricane drinks, Muffuletta, King Cake, and Jambalaya! Flipping through the rest of the magazine, Love is in the air on page 48 as we feature Romantic Getaways across the Emerald Coast. You will find a fun quiz in Style, which will help you determine if you are an interior decorator at heart, and meet Bobby Emmons featured in I Am Pensacola. I believe February will be what we hope and desire for it to be if we stay the course. There will be a few more Mardi Gras activities, other events will evolve, and the Pensacola community will continue to change and grow. Shop local, be patient and kind. Thank you for reading VIP Pensacola.

olar Plunge is a Pensacola Beach Chamber annual fundraising drive for those brrrr-ave enough to take the challenge! Hundreds of plungers – many dressed in costume - jumped into the icy waters of the Santa Rosa Sound to wash off 2020 and to kick off the new year. There were also many spectators that came out to the beach to watch this long-established tradition. Paradise Bar & Grill, the signature spot for the event, served black-eyed peas and cornbread to all registered attendees. Red Fish Blue Fish played host for the first time this year and geared their event to be more family focused. The registered attendees at RFBF were served biscuits with crawfish gravy. The proceeds of the Polar Bear Plunge go to the Pensacola Beach Chamber of Commerce to fund events on the Island.

Thrillbilly Ball T

he Krewe of Daisy Dukes held their 16th Annual Thrillbilly Ball on January 9 at the Pensacola Museum of Commerce. The krewe is known for their “Cowboy-Chic” attire, and for having a boot-scootin’ good time, and this year’s ball was no exception. An open bar was available, Hot Spot BBQ provided incredibly delicious food, and the Time Travelers performed throughout the evening. A temperature check was performed at the door upon entry, and Selfie Photobooth was on hand to encourage attendees to capture their fun memories of the evening. The Krewe of Daisy Dukes was formed in 2005 by a group of like-minded women wanting to promote unity and friendship through various krewe activities, functions, and community services. The Krewe consists of a diverse group of dedicated and ambitious women from our community as well as one selected man known as the “Boss Hogg.” The Krewe enjoys giving back to the community and assisting in charities like the American Cancer Society, the Women’s Shelter, Ronald McDonald House, Favor House, Manna Food Pantries, Pace Center for Girls, Called 2 Rescue, and participating in the Pin and Bead Swap/ Diaper Drive for Gulf Coast Kid’s House. They love to be involved in all local Mardi Gras festivities and look forward to the parades. Although this year has brought many challenges for the krewe and participating in functions, they still continue to raise money for charities behind the scenes and try to get together whenever possible. They look forward to the new year and comraderie with their krewe sisters.

A Feast Fit For A (Mardi Gras) King I

story by Anna Stockton

f you’re like me, you live for Mardi Gras season! My traditional Christmas tree ornaments are replaced with sparkly crawfish and fleur-de-lis ornaments, the tinsel comes down and the beads go up, bright purple, green and gold lights are strung where the twinkling white lights used to hang. I’m here for it all! The parades, the parties, the cocktails, the debauchery and especially the food! While some Mardi Gras celebrations are postponed this year, you can still celebrate with close friends and family with a traditional Mardi Gras feast!

There’s a Hurricane A Comin’ Ahh, hurricanes, synonymous with bad decisions and LOTS of fun. Founded at Pat O’Brien’s bar in New Orleans during WW II, when rum flowed freely on barges on the Mississippi and whiskey and scotch were in short supply. During that time, in order to get your hands on one case of whiskey, multiple cases of rum had to be purchased as well. This left Pat O’Brien’s bar loaded down with rum, so they became inventive and created the sweet, rum based drink. The name Hurricane came from the use of the drink glasses modeled after hurricane lanterns. The glasses quickly became souvenirs for the happy customers. These days, you don’t have to go to New Orleans to get the real deal Hurricanes for your celebration. Pat O’Brien’s mixes are available online to give your guests the ultimate Mardi Gras experience, just add rum.

“Y’all…It’s Majestic The next course for our Mardi Gras feast is my personal favorite, the muffuletta. Originating in a Sicilian deli in the French Quarter in the early 1900’s, this sandwich is named after the bread it’s built on. The farmers that sold their produce in the farmer’s market nearby were the inspiration for the sandwich that has slowly crept across the Unites States since then. Although, the meat, cheese, and olive salad sandwich has Italian roots, it’s a staple at Mardi Gras celebrations. Cut the sandwich in small portions for an appetizer or serve as an entrée for your feast. Either way, your guests will love the flavors this Sicilian creation brings to the table. Make sure you tuck a sandwich away for the next day. Muffulettas have an amazing, magical ability to cure what ails you after a night of Mardi Gras partying…..or so I’ve heard.

“Jambalaya and a crawfish pie, filet gumbo” Following up the muffaletta in our Mardi Gras feast is jambalaya, a dish so engrained in the Louisiana and Mardi Gras culture, Hank Williams even sang a song about it. This multi-cultural one-pot dish has West African, French, German, and Spanish influences. The Spanish are credited with inventing creole jambalaya during their 38-year reign of the Louisiana Territory when they tried to make paella but had to substitute tomatoes for saffron. When the French regained control of the territory, they brought spices from the Caribbean, combined them with the already established jambalaya and the flavor of modern jambalaya began to take shape. The final piece came from those industrious Germans and their mad sausage making skills. As they immigrated to Louisiana they added sausage to the jambalaya that was already packed with chicken, shrimp and tons of flavor, this is how the jambalaya we know and love today was born! So, as your guests are sipping on their hurricanes, share this vast knowledge of the history of jambalaya as you serve your own recipe at your feast and “son of a gun, we’ll have big fun on the Bayou.”

“There’s a WHAT in the cake?” In a conversation with my father recently (who’s from the “other” side of Florida), he asked me what a King Cake is. My answer; “It’s a cake with a baby Jesus in it” -oh, he had some questions after that. Although, I simplified my answer, the King cake has a long and deep history in religion. This cake, a mixture of coffee cake and French pastry, was brought to New Orleans from France in the 1870’s. The cake symbolizes the three wise men who brought gifts to baby Jesus and is first served on King’s Day, also known as the Epiphany. The traditional colors of the cake icing, gold, purple and green, have their own significance. The gold represents power, purple represents justice and green signifies faith and the circular shape symbolizes the unity of all faiths. It is widely believed the baby inside the cake represents baby Jesus, and whoever finds it is King for a day, and also must either bring the cake or host the party the next year. If you don’t want to try your hand at making your own, there are plenty of bakeries on the Gulf Coast that can ensure the guests at your feast have an amazing, traditional Mardi Gras dessert to top off your feast fit for a King!

he Palafox Market is back in action at its regular location in MLK, Jr. Plaza in Downtown Pensacola, which is held every Saturday from 9am-2pm. The iconic farmers market has been closed for several months in response to the City’s moratorium on public events due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a carefully planned, phased reopening, Palafox Market launched with about half its regular vendors, showcasing food, farm produce, and products geared toward safety and sanitation, such as handmade soaps and face masks. Organizers are continuing to work hard to ensure that shoppers and vendors can enjoy the market safely and working to improve the experience as time progresses. Additional vendor and visitor safety precautions include but are not limited to increased physical space between vendors and face coverings to be required by all in attendance. No vendors will be providing or offering samples, unless individually packaged. All vendors are required to wear gloves, which must be changed regularly. All vendors are required to display products at the front of their stall. Customers will not be allowed to enter vendor stalls to avoid crowding. Security was also present to monitor large groups of people and assist with controlling proper social distancing.

A VIRTUAL Success story by Greg Alexander

T

he past 12 months have taught the entire world how to pivot with their plans and make concessions to long-standing traditions and customs. Although celebrating Mardi Gras has grown into an extended season, in 2021 many of the Pensacola customs for celebrating have been officially moved due to social distancing needs because of COVID 19. What we consider Mardi Gras season follows the Christian feasts of Epiphany, which this year was on January 6, and extending to the actual Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, this year on February 16, the day before Lent begins. Pensacola has a long and rich history which has grown to draw a lot of Mardi Gras fanfare. While the extremity of the parties, balls, gatherings, parades, and excitement may seem like falderol to some, much of it is just quite the opposite. In Pensacola, there are almost 100 Mardi Gras Krewes. Some of these are, indeed, social outlets of like-minded folks, some to these are legacy driven, and some of them are means for networking and making friends. But, what many of these krewes have in common, and what makes them especially good for our community, is that they give back, they have a civic-minded cause and purpose where they raise lots of money for their chosen philanthropic

24-25 GiveCareShare - Virtual Mall Ball.indd 1

endeavor and some krewes do not designate a single cause, but many. Now not all krewes have established a nonprofit status and give back through their organization, but those are comprised of people who give back to the community in other ways and look to their krewe as an outlet just for socializing, and that is great too because we all need that avenue. But one thing that is for sure, local agencies in need have recognized that many of the krewes have become a tremendous resource for needed donations and fundraising. Revenue for many non-profits has dropped substantially because of COVID-19, while the need for services have increased. Additionally, the ability for volunteers to help the non-profit organizations has been complicated and diminished – necessitated because of social distancing and spread of the pandemic. Something that local non-profits have noticed is that even though most krewes have postponed their annual celebrations, they have steadily continued their charge for fundraising for their respective causes. One of the single largest Mardi Gras balls in all of Northwest Florida is the Cordova Mall Ball coordinated by the Krewe of Les Petits Enfants with this year’s proceeds benefiting the addition of the Bear Family Foundation Pediatric

1/28/21 4:03 PM

Oncology Center at the Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Ascension Sacred Heart. Normally, the event draws thousands of participants from all over the Gulf Coast who come together to support the community’s children. This year, with trepidation, trials and errors, Les Petits Enfants and the Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation learned how to pivot their plans into a virtual event and maintain a high level of long-standing sponsors, including Presenting Sponsor Sandy Sansing Dealerships. Prior to this year, the event has generated more than $6.4 million for the Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Ascension Sacred Heart – the only pediatric facility in the region. This year was the 26th annual Cordova Mall Ball and it will be remembered as much as any with the creative, virtual style approach. The 2021 iteration of the event offered the same level of excitement and entertainment, but in a different way. Some patrons watched from home whether that was here or in another state. VIP patrons drove up in their cars as the band performed and enjoyed a to-go style meal along with exclusive swag bags fi lled with fun things from sponsors. VIP attendees and sponsors enjoyed a tailgate style evening watching an enormous big-screen of pre-recorded fun and entertaining vignettes from local celebrities, which was also the programming the virtual viewers saw. As everyone was entertained, they also learned about what the children’s hospital offers and details about the new oncology center. For the past 25 years, 100 percent of the proceeds from the Cordova Mall Ball has gone to provide high-quality, personalized care to children of families in our region, allowing families to avoid costly trips out of town for the same level of care. Carol Carlan, president of Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation noted, “We are thrilled to be able to continue this event in a new way in 2021 to benefit children battling cancer. We know that the families of these young patients need support so they can be the very best support for their loved one who is fighting cancer. This new center will provide areas where a family can enjoy some family togetherness during a challenging time in their lives.”

24-25 GiveCareShare - Virtual Mall Ball.indd 2

The pediatric oncology center, now under construction within the children’s hospital and expected to open this spring, will have a total of 16,000 square feet. The center will feature 9 all-private rooms, a playroom, a spacious family lounge, a movie room, laundry room, and a gym enabling families to spend as much free time together as possible while they focus on healing. It will be a new addition that will continue the spirit and legacy of Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola’s first pediatric oncologist, Dr. Thomas G. Jenkins. Jennifer Saba, annual giving coordinator for Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation shared, “Moving to Pensacola from Mississippi five years ago, and beginning my fundraising role at Sacred Heart three years ago, I am continuously blown away by the generosity of the Pensacola community. In addition to my fundraising role, I am involved in other charitable organizations and I always take note that this is such a loving, giving, supporting community. Through each and every event I am always so humbled by the support of so many that want to give back and also do great things for our community. Despite economic setbacks this community has faced, Pensacola is always supporting one another and I am so proud to be a part of it. Although re-inventing ways to fundraise over the last year has been a real challenge for all nonprofits, the Krewe Les Petits Enfants and the Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation teams found an entertaining, educational, and fun way to pull off a successful and safe event. There are many take-aways from this year’s event that will help build on future fundraising tasks and ways to reach a broader audience. The efforts of all that were involved in putting this event on, all that sponsored, attended, both in the parking lot and virtually, have made an impact on the lives of all families who are and will be seeking treatment at the Studer Family Children’s Hospital. You never know when that need may arise, but you will be glad that we have such a facility here in Pensacola.

he 18th Annual Beautiful Beginnings Bridal expo was hosted by Coastal Weddings Magazine and the Bridal Loft on January 10 at the Pensacola Bay Center. Over 85 vendors were on site with informational pamphlets, displays, and samples from their companies, giving future brides an array of options to create their perfect wedding day. A runway fashion show was presented virtually to showcase some of the season’s new designers and styles. Drawings for door prizes were held throughout the event. The grand prize drawings featured 3 chances to win a full honeymoon giveaway to Jamaica, Costa Rica, or Punta Cana, Mexico. Brides and grooms-to-be were also eligible to register for door prizes drawn throughout the event. Organizers made sure to follow CDC guidelines by offering sanitizing stations upon arrival and throughout the event space, face coverings were required upon entry, and promoted social distancing from others not in one’s own party.

he 200 South Market is a relatively new, fun, and lowkey vendor space that is held every third Saturday of the month. 200 South is home to some very appetizing bars and restaurants like World of Beer, Taco Agave, Graffiti Pizza, and Blend Lounge. During the week, the area is home to many themed drink and food specials and tends to be a hub for sports related viewing opportunities. Throughout the 200 South Market, many amazing local vendors are out and about, providing passersby an opportunity to browse an assortment of creative wares, shop for friends, family, and themselves, in a laid-back atmosphere. Love that style … but what is it! story by Clare Lee

E

ver wondered about your interior design style? Unless you went to design school, you probably never had a lesson on specific styles of furnishings. However, many may have a natural flair for furnishings and were schooled by Pinterest posts and practice. Or, you may have such a design talent that you are the one creating those posts. Whether that is you or not, we are breaking down a few flavors of design here. Many of us like to marry a “throuple” of styles. Of course, everyone’s style may not fit into a box but likely draws from one or a few of these most popular design themes. For some of us, thumbing through Pinterest may confuse us more than inform us of our design preferences. If you are not one with that innate interior design taste, then you may want to work with a pro. When working with a professional interior designer, they often quiz you about types of furnishings you like, your color choices (or lack of color), and how you will use a space to determine your design direction. Or once you realize your style(s), you may even choose a designer who specializes in your genre of choice. When it’s your home, everything hinges on what you like and whether you’ll be happy living in that space. It’s often easy to tell whether or not you like something, but it can be difficult to say for sure why. Ultimately, it is about creating a space that you love. A designer once told me – only keep things in your space that you love. Professional designers emphasize an understanding of different styles to get a starting point to identifying one or two that gives you the feels, then they can help fill in the rest of your look. Included are just some of the popular styles. Others are contemporary, minimalist, Scandinavian, transitional, French country, shabby chic, eclectic, or any combination of styles. Also trending for this year is a new movement called Japandi – a fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian influences. Whatever style(s) you choose, love the space you are in. If you are overwhelmed with the many design choices, reach out to a local design professional or just browse their showroom for some inspiration.

Match the furniture to it’s style!

.. A

Similar to Hollywood Regency, Glam is a design style that tends to be luxurious, over-thetop and opulent. It’s a dramatic design style, perfect for a homeowner who enjoys making a statement. his style is filled with luxe textiles incorporating features of Victoian design such as plush, velvet, or antique furnishing and jewel-toned colors and mixed with some hints of modern and contemporary. Overall, it is a high end and posh look.

2

..B

Mod Farmhouse This style has become very mainstream in the last few years – thanks in part to HGTV. The style uses a lot of found and salvaged objects but pulled together in a more modern and refined way. With some rustic and outdoor elements, it is more farmhouse-esque. You’ll see plaids, blues, greens and lots of white and black used in this style. It is very inviting and comfortable and has a hint of traditional but less formal. hink rustic yet refined as Joanna aines may say.

3

.. C

Industrial style as the name implies,

draws inspiration from a warehouse or an urban loft. There’s a sense of unfinished rawness in many of the elements including exposed brick, ductwork, rustic wood, and leathers. An iconic home with an industrial design theme would be a renovated loft from a former industrial building. Think high ceilings, old timber, and dangling metal light fixtures with sparse, functional furniture with some abstract art or photography adding a dash of color to an otherwise neutral color scheme.

4 34

Hollywood Glam

D

Coastal Not much explanation needed on this one! The name inherently gives you a sense of what the style holds. It’s all about the casual beachy atmosphere that we see here on the Gulf Coast, and is prevalent all along the East Coast, as well. The style is all about bringing the natural elements of the coast inside your home. There are a lot of whitewashed woods, blue tones, unique colored pearl-like glass tiles, and plenty of white to help all that beachy sunshine bounce around the room. The intention is to create a relaxed and comfortable environment that is inspired by the beach and ocean.

Mid-Century Modern With cues coming heavily from the the 1950s and 60s, there’s a retro nostalgia present in Mid-Century Modern Design. Functionality or “fussy-free” was the main theme for Mid-century design, which also nods to minimalism. The lines on many pieces are simple and clean and are made out of warm woods with purposeful details and styling. It easily complements any interior and also helps with seamless transitions from interior to exterior.

5

..F

Traditional design style offers classic details, sumptuous furnishings, and an abundance of accessories. It is rooted in European sensibilities. raditional homes often feature dark, finished wood, rich color palettes, and a variety of textures and curved lines. Furnishings have elaborate and ornate details and fabrics, like velvet, silk, and brocade, which may include a variety of patterns and textures. There’s depth, layering and dimensionality within most traditional designs and it is one of the oldest, and most common design styles

6

.. G

Modern is a broad design term that typically refers to a home with clean, crisp lines, a simple color palette, and the use of materials that can include metal, glass and steel. Modern design employs a sense of simplicity in every element, including furniture. A word that’s commonly used to describe modern style is sleek, and there is not a lot of clutter or accessories involved with a modern style. Modern is a timeless style that will always look fresh, and modern furnishings can be very comfortable.

H ..

Bohemian oho reflects a carefree lifestyle with little rules, except to follow your heart’s desire. Bohemian homes may include vintage furnishings, globally inspired textiles, displays of collections, and items found during travels. There may be some caning or bamboo mixed with saturated colors. Within the Bohemian style, there’s a laissezfaire attitude where anything goes as long as you love it. Boho style is all about pulling together natural and organic elements into an exotic, playful, layered, and collected look.

n Wednesday, January 16 the Krewe of S.W.A.T. delivered diapers to Gulf Coast Kid’s House as part of the Krewe of Blues Pin & Bead Festival Diaper Drive. The Krewe of S.W.A.T. is a non-profit organization that was established in 2015 and now has a total of 64 members. The sole purpose of the Krewe is bringing the people of Pensacola to celebrate the merriment of fellowship and to promote and support Pensacola’s cultural landscape through participation in the annual Mardi Gras season, while uplifting the community throughout various endeavors of engagement awareness and social enhancement. Gulf Coast Kid’s House is a private, not-for-profit which provides services to victims of child abuse in Escambia County. The goal of Gulf Coast Kid’s House is to eventually improve case outcomes and minimize trauma to the children and families they care for. The Krewe of S.W.A.T. donated a whopping 20,000 diapers, from newborns to pull ups, for the families at Gulf Coast Kid’s House. Trucks showed up loaded to the top with diapers for the kids. It was a very happy morning for the people of Gulf Coast Kid’s House, but it was also a good reminder that giving back can be one of the greatest gifts.

Roofs Over Your Head Warmth in Your Heart R

eal estate maintenance and repairs are something every property owner has to deal with. Some of you may be selftaught handymen who will venture out to do most projects, but with so much at stake, it takes a professional when it comes to roofing. With vast roofing experience, hometown professionals like the Freeman family who own Freeman Roofing can take care of projects large and small for homes and even for your business, commercial, or industrial property. Roofing is at the very core of the Freeman family. When Jimmy and Bernie Freeman started their roofing company in 1976, they had no idea the impact this would have on not only their family, but clients for years to come by providing “Quality Work at a Fair Price. Freeman roofing is well known along the Gulf Coast as providing honest and quality workmanship.

Not Just Residential Roofing While you usually think of Freeman Roofing as a residential roofing company, you may be surprised to find out that many of the jobs they do are commercial. Jimmy Freeman used his expertise from working at NAS Pensacola as a roofing supervisor to expand into the commercial roofing business. Some of Freeman’s biggest jobs to this day are located where it all started, on NAS Pensacola. Jimmy has been recognized on numerous occasions for his superior performance and immense knowledge of the commercial roofing industry.

The New Look of Roofing As it’s always been, Freeman Roofing is a family business, with sons, daughters, nephews and grandchildren all working together to offer the quality workmanship people have come to expect from Freeman. As Jimmy looks towards his retirement, his daughter Melissa is preparing to take the helm from of the roofing business. With ten women in the office and out in the field, including 86-year old Elouise Freeman, A.K.A. Grandma, there’s girl power throughout this male dominated field. Don’t be surprised if you see females on their work crews as well. Melissa has learned the ins and outs of the roofing business in her years working under her Father and is excited to add her own vision to the business while sticking to the company goal and mission statement of providing “Quality Work at a Fair Price.”

Freeman in the Community Along with renovating a home for a Purple Heart Veteran, Freeman has come to the aid of the Gulf Coast countless times. In 2004 when Hurricane Ivan pummeled the area, Jimmy, along with his family, provided emergency clean up and roofing assistance to local families in need. He even purchased several thousand 1-gallon gas tanks, tarps and other supplies, providing invaluable resources to those affected. In the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Gustav, Jimmy and his team packed up and headed to the affected areas to be of service to the victims in need. Most recently, when Hurricane Sally left her mark in the Pensacola area, Freeman stepped in and placed tarps on the homes of the sick and elderly, free of charge.

Freeman Roofing understands the importance of having a sound roof overhead. They are licensed and insured (License #RC0058058) and dedicated to making sure to deliver quality work with quality products and manufacturers. Maintaining the family company’s stellar reputation is a top priority. Freeman Roofing offers a variety of services on residential and commercial structures of all sizes. Romantic Getaways F

story by Clare Lee

amily vacations, honeymoons, retreats, and meetings are all reasons that many folks travel from all over the world to the Gulf Coast beach neighborhoods we call home. As locals, we get caught up in the daily grind and sometimes forget to carpè diem for all that we have at our reach. One thing for sure is that now is the perfect season to enjoy the many places that we have quick access to. With travel having been difficult over the last year and with the fervor of the holidays in our rearview mirror, now is the perfect season and reason to get away, if only for a single day, night, or weekend to one of these nearby romantic landmarks. With spectacular sunsets, unbeatable beaches, luxurious accommodations, and world class dining (both casual and fancy) the Emerald Coast is the perfect place for couples to reconnect and rejuvenate. There are romantic retreats to pamper and provide the ultimate romantic experience, or go day tripping just to soak in some of the wonder that exists nearby yet makes you feel so far from home, when you might just be down the street. If you do choose to stay the night away, here are some places where you may find romance in the air.

and exciting nightlife alive on the Harbor. Romantic getaways mean something different to everyone, The Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort and Spa is a perfect solution. To some, romance is a walk along a pristine beach with waves lapping at bare feet. Others prefer luxurious spa treatments for two followed by an exquisite meal by candlelight. And some couples expect all three. These are the types of couples who choose Hilton Sandestin— and they come back, time and time again to partake in the culmination of experiences at Seagar’s Prime Steaks, Serenity by the Sea Spa, and all nature and beach beauty one can behold.

Relish the Romance Along 30a A bit further east on Highway 30A appears the WaterColor Inn & Resort. Whether you stay in the 30A area or are just out for a romantic night, lots of elevated date night dinner options avail. J

ackson’s Steakhouse of Pensacola hosted brunch to celebrate our very own Pensacola Opera on January 24. Pensacola favorite Elise Quagliata is Carmen - opera’s ultimate seductress whose charms cannot be tamed. Carmen is a famous 1875 opera by French composer Georges Bizet. It is based on a novella by Frenchman Prosper Merimee. Under the power of her spell, rival lovers force her to make a deadly decision. Bizet’s grand operatic masterpiece returns to Pensacola in an exciting spectacle, led by stage director Fenlon Lamb. Every precaution -- mask wearing, social distancing, and health screenings were taken to ensure that every attendees safety was in place. Singers and instrumentalists isolated themselves, have been regularly tested for COVID, and have temperature checks daily. Guests entering were subject to a health screening questionnaire and temperature checks as well. Thanks to their sponsor, Emerald Coast Realty, a total of 68 guests were on hand at Jackson’s to celebrate this historic event. Pensacola Opera opened its 38th season at the Saenger Theatre in downtown Pensacola.

T

he Junior Achievement of Northwest Florida Hall of Fame event “sailed” into another wonderful evening under stars at the Pensacola Yacht Club on Tuesday, January 12. On location, Brent Lane was doing the “broadcasting” thanks to all the amazing sponsors that made the recognition of The Laureate Award, Business Award, and Volunteer of the Year Awards possible. Guests attended the event virtually as well, including the owners of CatCountry 98.7, Dave and Mary Hoxeng. Dave has helped the business community understand what JA does and why it is so critical. He has been involved with JA because he’s passionate about ensuring that students understand free enterprise. LOCALE O Port of Pensacola

The Port of Pensacola on the Gulf of Mexico is the newest Green Marine participant and the third Florida port authority to become part of the largest voluntary environmental certification program for North America’s maritime industry. The vision plan, adopted in 2019, seeks to establish a hybrid port, balancing clean cargo seaport trades with new investment geared to creative knowledge and expertise. Green Marine offers a step-by-step road map for port authorities, terminal operators, shipping lines and shipyard managers to voluntarily and measurably reduce their environmental footprint. The comprehensive program addresses key environmental issues using 13 performance indicators that include lowering air emissions, minimizing community impacts, and demonstrating environmental leadership.

The Green Marine certification process is rigorous and transparent. Results are independently verified every two years and each company’s individual results are published annually and made available online.

‘Change Makers’ Donate to PSC $164,000 for Student Scholarships More than $164,000 was donated to help Pensacola State College students during the recent, inaugural Change Maker -Expanding Possibilities reception.

“Education is one of my primary concerns. Pensacola State changes lives and I am enamored by all of the programs at the College,” said Jo-Ann Price, a former educator, who along with her husband, Michael, founded the Change Maker program and contributed $50,0000 for student scholarships. The fundraiser was the brainchild of the Prices who largely support the College’s annual Holiday Experience which was cancelled this year due to COVID-19. The couple met with PSC President Ed Meadows and PSC Foundation Executive Director Andrea Krieger last fall to assist students who have lost jobs and incomes due to the pandemic.

That meeting resulted in the creation of the Change Maker program, where the Prices encouraged College administrators to use their gift to inspire four other donors to each give $10,000 which they matched. And to encourage more participation, the Prices suggested using the final $10,000 to match $1,000 gifts from 10 other donors for universal scholarships.

Five donors and their organizations or families stepped forward to endow scholarships which will support PSC students for years to come. The $10,000 Change Maker program donors are The Sandy Sansing Foundation, The Morette Family, Rich and Beth Williams, Innovation Coast, and Walmart. Ten donors stepped forward to help students immediately overcome the challenges associated with COVID-19, Hurricane Sally, and a difficult 2020. Their gifts were combined with matching dollars to bolster the Universal Scholarship Fund by $20,500. Contributing to the Universal Scholarship Change Maker fund are Jenn Cole, Steven Del Gallo, Doug Herrick and Sharon HessHerrick, Joe and Beverly Kinego, Navy Federal Credit Union, Bette Roberts, Mayor Grover and Jill Robinson IV, “Flash” Gordon and Betty Sprague, Dee Strickland and Herb and Ann Woll.

St. John the Evangelist Launches Their Annual Fundraising Campaign

Since 1874, St. John the Evangelist Catholic School has been a staple in Pensacola. As the second oldest Catholic school in the country, they have served seven generations of families locally. Interim Principal Dana Donahoo says, “St. John is committed to educating students through Catholic faith, academics, the arts and athletics.” Being around for almost 150 years means that St. John has dealt with their fair share of ups and downs in Pensacola and the world. They have adapted and overcome all these challenges, this year is no different. COVID has had a major financial impact on the school, along with the extra precautions and supplies needed to keep the students and teachers safe, new technology had to be purchased to ensure all students are able to

LOCALE O stay on track academically. In addition to the extra COVID expenses, keeping up with the maintenance and safety of an older school building is no small feat. Fire escape updates are a top priority this year for the school as well as other safety upgrades. Building a school-wide library is a priority this year as well, this resource is important for the continued progress of the students. St. John relies on their annual gala and sunset run as their fundraisers, to provide much needed resources for their operating costs. These fundraisers are especially important as 85% of their 240 students are attending with the aid of scholarships. For safety reasons this year, they’ve set aside their gala in lieu of the first ever online fundraising campaign. You can visit https://www. stjohnpensacola.com/school.html to watch a video of current students and alumni and to find out more about the fundraising campaign. rade-A-Tree is the first chance in 2021 to join those going carbon neutral! Keep Pensacola Beautiful was on site in the parking lot of their new office on 2001 North Palafox Street on January 3 to accept live holiday trees to be recycled into mulch for free. In return for their donations, the first 45 attendees received a live oak tree to plant themselves, along with instructions on how to do so. This event encourages those who chose to go with a live holiday tree this year to enjoy a sustainable holiday season and encourage new growth of locally beneficial trees in the process. The staff of Keep Pensacola Beautiful had hot cocoa and hand sanitizer available, and masks were heavily encouraged. Keep Pensacola Beautiful is a proud partner of the Arbor Day Foundation. The Arbor Day Foundation and International Paper made this program possible. Keep Pensacola Beautiful’s programs are designed to improve the overall appearance of our city and county by focusing on changing the behavioral patterns and attitudes of our citizens. Programs in effect include: The Great American Cleanup, Adopt-A-Spot, Keeping Up Carver, Neighborhood Clean Sweeps, Beach Cleanups, and many others.

I AM PENSACOLA

Bobby Emmons

What is your hometown and how did you end up in the Pensacola area? I was born and reared in Pensacola. I am very fortunate to have lived almost all of my life in Pensacola. What is your profession? I am the owner of Thompson Walden Insurance in Pensacola. After college I worked retail management in Mobile and Baton Rouge. I moved back to Pensacola in 1980 working for a major captive insurance company. I purchased Thompson Walden Insurance in 1999 and this year we are celebrating our 22nd year. What are some of your favorite things about Pensacola? What’s not to like about Pensacola. It has been great to see the growth and vibrance of downtown. The beaches, golf courses, minor league baseball, and fishing. It’s a great place to live. Three words that best describe you. Loyal, Driven, Ambitious. Favorite place for dining, entertainment and for outdoor activities? My wife Karen and I enjoy the Grand Marlin, The District, Global Grill, and O’Brien’s Bistro. We love to travel and go camping in our new motorhome. We are also season ticket holders of the Blue Wahoos and can’t wait to have baseball again. What is the one thing you do not go a day without? Coffee Finish this statement, I AM PENSACOLA because… As a life long resident I have seen the changes over the years and we are definitely on the right track. photo by Kristina Wright
