Unlike the national averages that home sales from January to February fell 6.6%, Pensacola and surrounding beach areas reported the best February home sales ever, up 14% compared to February 2020 with nearly 800 homes sold, an all-time record high for this time of year. letter from the Publisher Those of you who know our associate publisher Verla Price know that she works circles around most of us. She talks fast, she moves fast, she works fast, and she sleeps little. She works hard but when she plays, she plays hard. So, as we were signing off and going to print on this issue, she was on her way to play hard on a trip of mountain bike riding 6 hours north of the Florida state line. AND, she was driving an extended cab pickup hauling her new camper which was also full of more than a couple of motorcycles (the motorcycle riding does not scare her but this drive may have). We were talking while she drove and as she was just about to lose cell service, she mentioned that she was going to write her Associate Publisher’s Letter to send to the design team from her camper later tonight. As she described her white knuckles as she maneuvered the mountainous curves … I said, “You just drive, and don’t get killed hauling that thing, or on that bike, and we will finish the rest.” Of course, she will not check out completely, but she did at least agree for me to write the letter this month. What a pleasure it is to be introducing this issue that focuses on Real Estate and Home. There are some incredible resources for buying, selling, decorating, designing, and maintaining a home here in Pensacola. We are happy to be highlighting a few of those for you this month. In this issue, find some fun and informative reads including Pensacola Style showcasing Small Changes with Big Results. Let your spirits run wild in Swizzle with some ideas on how to have a bar in any room of the house. Our philanthropy focus in Give Care Share highlights the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge, which is doing amazing things for the natural fauna in our coastal area. he Women’s Council of Realtors, Pensacola Bay Area Network has hosted a Top Gun Gala for over 30 years, and is comprised of the top realtors in the Pensacola Bay area. Invitations were Ragan & Ernie Dutra delivered based on the sales achievements for each realtor for the year 2020. On February 26, the women’s council hosted their Masquerade Top Gun Gala at the Pensacola Yacht Club. The 2021 local and state strategic partners in diamond, gold, silver, and bronze levels were showcased, and the keynote speaker for the evening was Quint Studer. The guest speaker for the evening was Amy Snook, who is the 2021 President of the Florida Women’s Council of Realtors, and represents the entire state. Alexis Bolin was introduced as the incoming president, while Terry Mahoney was relieved of her duties as immediate past president. n March 3 the Greater Pensacola Chamber of Commerce announced its 61st Annual Pensacola Area Commitment to Excellence (PACE) Awards under the beautiful infield lights at the Blue Wahoos Stadium. This definitely has been a very demanding year for all, but that did not stop this year’s event. It is always wonderful for so many people from our community to come together that can celebrate under weather better than perfect, and it was a sold-out event again this year. Congratulations to CAT Country 98.7 owners Dave and Mary Hoxeng who were on hand to receive the “Spirt of Pensacola” award for their commitment to the greater Pensacola Area. The PACE Awards are given each year by the Greater Pensacola Chamber of Commerce to honor and recognize those outstanding individuals in the community who have significantly contributed to the Pensacola area’s overall economic progress. hether you’re selling your home or making your home your own, we all have things we would like to do to spruce up our space. Live, Laugh, Love…that color Let’s face it, we’re spending more time at home and perhaps our world could use a little brightening, a pop of color on your kitchen cabinets is an easy and inexpensive way to change the look of your kitchen. Now I’ve painted kitchen cabinets before and while it ranks right up there with going to the dentist as far as enjoyable activities go, it makes a dramatic impact. Blues and greens do a great job of refreshing your cabinets, especially when paired with a neutral countertop. Bringing outside colors into your kitchen is sure to lighten and brighten your kitchen and your mood. Maybe you don’t want to commit to a bold, new color on your cabinets, simply changing out the hardware can give your kitchen a fresh look.

Custom curtains are the way to go to show off your personal style. The “Golden” Age of Wallpaper Remember when every prospective buyer on house hunting shows declared wallpaper “outdated” and “it HAS to go.” Well, we’ve come full circle and wallpaper is back and more popular than ever. Whether you go wild or whimsical, tropical or traditional, there’s something for everyone’s style. Wallpaper on a single wall or small space is an easy way to update a room and show your personality, and I’m not just mentioning this because I recently found out that Golden Girls wallpaper exists and “might” be perfect for my laundry room. Hanging wallpaper has been putting a strain on the hanger’s patience (and possibly mental health) for decades but recently wallpaper has become more user friendly, pre-pasted and peel and stick wallpapers are here to help you jazz up your space and keep you from losing your cool.
Corralling Chaos If you’ve got kids (or a messy spouse), you’re probably sick of tripping over shoes, bookbags, lacrosse sticks and well, everything. A mudroom might be just what your home needs -no additions or remodeling needed. Taking an unused space and putting hooks, shelving, cubbies, or even lockers is a great way to minimize clutter in other areas of your home and make your space more presentable to drop in guests. Plus, having a place for everyone to put away their gear might just minimize the chaotic morning questions like “Where are my shoes?”, “Has anyone seen my shin guards?” and “Mommy, why are you drinking already?“

ed Fish/Blue Fish hosted Pensacola Beach Chamber’s 1st Business Afterhours of 2021, on Tuesday, March 9. Patty Spradling and Matt Clark welcomed the attendee’s and updated everyone on beach news. They also welcomed the Gulf Breeze Chamber and the Navarre Chamber members who accepted the invitation to join in on the fun. “We are excited to be able to bring people together again after such a long break due to COVID. With the 3 mile bridge still being down, our goal is to help our local businesses to build relationships that can help them sustain until the bridge is re-open,” said Patty Spradling. There were plenty of networking opportunities as people connected with others and snacked on the delicious appetizers provided by Red Fish/ Blue Fish. Lucky winners took home some fantastic door prizes. The weather was perfect for a night out on the beach, and many lingered on to enjoy the camaraderie and cheer of being together again!

People You Should Know What is your hometown, what brought you to The Emerald Coast, and how long have you been here? I have been here since I was 6 weeks old, only spending a few years in South Florida when I was younger. What is your profession and give a brief description of what you do. I am a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Gulf Coast where I enjoy playing matchmaker with buyers and sellers. I am also a Mortgage Loan Originator with Delmar Mortgage where I get to play matchmaker with borrowers and loan products! What led you to choose this profession? I am always intrigued with the housing market and homebuilding process. I graduated from PJC (now PSC) with a degree in drafting and design and had internship drawing and editing house plans. Life took me in another direction, however when I had the opportunity, I decided to pursue my dream of getting my real estate license and becoming a Realtor. Recently, I acquired my Mortgage Loan Originator license to better help my clientele with any additional financial goals they may have in addition to investing in real estate. What is your hometown, what brought you to The Emerald Coast, and how long have you been here? I was born in Pensacola, Florida. My mother was in the United States Navy, so we moved often throughout my childhood. When she retired, we moved back to Milton, Florida where my family is originally from. What is your profession and give a brief description of what you do. I am the owner of Graye’s Granite Incorporated. We specialize in fabrication and installation of stone countertops, including quartz, marble, granite, quartzite, and exotic stone. We provide services for both residential customers and commercial contractors. What led you to choose this profession? I was 18 years old and a cashier at Walmart when I bumped into an old friend who worked for a local stone company. I wanted a chance to learn a new trade, so offered him half of my first chec if he got me an interview and I landed the job. That got my foot in the door and I fell in love with the industry. The rest is history. What are a few of your proudest accomplishments? Building a family-owned business that values quality over quantity and offers a positive work environment for our hard-working employees. I have worked at many places throughout my life where we all dreaded coming to work. At our company we love what we do and we do what we love so it doesn’t feel like work! If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you? Will Smith because he’s passionate and humble. What do you like best about Pensacola? What makes it unique? In Pensacola there is a strong sense of community. In this town, we learn to depend on one another, and we look out for each other. Learning the logistics of running a successful business without going to business school. There have been many lessons learned (some the hard way) throughout the growth of my company. What is your hometown, what brought you to The Emerald Coast? I grew up on a 250-acre farm in Middle Tennessee about 25 miles from Jack Daniels Distillery. I was originally stationed at NAS Pensacola in April of 1986 and never left! Tell us about your profession. CEO of 3 companies that are all directly correlated to addressing the needs of eterans on a ational level and specifically to the Gulf Coast Region. What led you to choose this profession? After 9/11/2001 the needs of returning Veterans in the Gulf Coast were staggering. We knew we could not, as a country, repeat the lack of support that our Vietnam Veterans received when they returned. God gave us a vision of what that could look like in an area that was 3rd in clinical care in the country. This birthed Veteran Centered Care, integrated approach to Veterans Care, CSME, and Monument & Museum to Women Veterans. What are a few of your proudest accomplishments? Being recognized by Evan Williams as one of the top 10 Veterans in the USA giving back to Veterans. Establishing a National Monument to honor 25% of Military plus 2.8 Million Women Veterans with a National Training Center in construction for returning Veterans. ensacola Habitat for Humanity hosted their 5th Annual Food Truck Festival at the Community Maritime Park on the weekend of March 12-13. Families, food lovers, adventure seekers, and Pensacola Habitat supporters were all welcomed in supporting the mission of Pensacola Habitat for Humanity, which is bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope. The two-day event featured a diverse mix of food trucks showcasing their signature dishes, live music, a Food Truck Tasting Competition, and more. This year is Pensacola Habitat for Humanity’s 40th anniversary and they celebrated by adding some new components to this year’s event. The Pensacola Habitat Food Truck Festival did follow CDC guidance as well as City of Pensacola requirements in all aspects to make it safe and fun for all attendees, while staff, volunteers, and vendors enforced a “no mask, no service” rule. An amplified number of sanitation stations and hand sanitizer pumps were also available at each food truck. 100% of proceeds benefit Pensacola Habitat for Humanity. eep Pensacola Beautiful hosted its 3rd Annual Communi-Tee Cup fundraiser on February 25 at Goofy Golf of Pensacola. It was quite a par-tee with an assortment of food trucks with varying culinary selections and a snack bar that included a keg that was donated from Big Top Brewery. Over $8,000 was raised for Keep Pensacola Beautiful’s 2021 programming initiatives all while participants had a blast at this uniquely competitive and fun event. All proceeds will benefit KPB’s youth education programs such as the Youth Ad-visory Council, Waste-In-Place activities for students in K-8 grades, and online resources for distance learning. Trophies were awarded to the top three teams with Five Flags Rotary taking home first place. Many lucky participants went home with door prizes from local business who wished to support Keep Pensacola Beautiful’s efforts and mission of providing education and resources for sustained community improvement.

emember house parties that we all had and attended before Covid? Well, they are back for 2021 and more appreciated than ever. Every party host wants guests to have a good time and one sure way to do that is to make certain the wine, liquor, and beer are always at arm reach. With guests scattered in every room of the house, on the porch, by the pool, maybe dancing in the street -- it becomes a challenge to keep every glass filled without requiring guests to absolve their party real estate. The perfect solution is the bar cart. Rolling bar carts can make the fun at your party plentiful. They allow the hosts to mingle and the guests to serve themselves at multiple points throughout the house. Now, maybe you are just having a small gathering, but here, too, the bar cart can help your party thrive. Use them as an end table or out by the pool. One party host even set one on the front porch so guests could enter the fray with drink in hand. Perfect for storing bottles, transporting ice buckets, or displaying serving trays, many bar carts come suited with wheels and will help you deck out your dining room, living area, or any small space. Or, if you are creative you can make your own. Many folks are doing this from everything from vintage suitcases and steamer trunks to console tv’s. Now, sure, you can just fill your Yeti with ice and pop it out on a table but unless it’s a frat house party, using and styling a bar cart elevates the party experience many times over. Yes, you have to style it to make if fun and functional while showing off your liquor labels. Put your style on display by incorporating fun trays, your favorite glassware,

Colorful coasters can help protect your furnishings, and always remember, a good bartender never leaves off the cocktail napkin - up your game with some nice cloth ones. To make your bar cart functional, play around with bottle placement and make sure the space is useable. Wine labels and liquor bottles provide great depths of color and unique shapes which enhance the look of your setup. You don’t need to fill every inch of the cart with bottles—just focus on the essentials. All you need are a few quality spirits to make the classics, plus, buying less means you can splurge on higher-quality spirits. If you have a surplus of wine or liquor, choose the best-looking bottles and store the rest in the pantry. If there is a local distiller, try to shop local and introduce your guests to the brand - they may find a new favorite right around the corner. If you are looking to buy a bar cart - the options are limitless. You can find them in any design style to meet your décor desire. Wine lovers may want one that incorporates hanging glass racks and wine racks. A lover of spirits may need lots of shelving to display their bourbon collection. Thankfully, bar carts are back in a big way offering classic style and convenience for crafting your perfect cocktail party. They are mobile and can be used in any room, inside or out. So mix up your next party by mixing drinks at your bar cart. Like the Little Big Town song says - ‘The wine, the beer, the whiskey, are the only things that fix me!’

n Friday, March 5, the Home Builders Association of West Florida hosted a Clay Shoot at Santa Rosa Shooting Center. Both Beginners and experienced sporting clay enthusiasts gathered in the early morning to shoot clays while building camaraderie at this popular event that benefits the HBA’s advocacy. There were raffles to be won! The day began with the sign ins and purchases of raffle ticket and mulligans. While participants enjoyed breakfast, supplied by American Concrete, Introductions and a safety briefing were held. The event consisted of a 100 clay targets per person. Congratulation goes to Team Ferguson, for the winning 1st Place Team with team members: Randy Hendricks, Bill Rawlins, Mike Solliday, and Russ Harris. The High Score Male Shooter – Both Randy Hendricks and Bill Rawlins shot a perfect 100, so it was a tie in the male section. Rizza Johnson who shot a high score of 39 was the High Score Female Shooter. The fun day ended with an amazing BBQ consisting of sausage, and burgers and all that goes along with it, also provided by American Concrete. Everyone experienced the fun of sporting clays while supporting a worthy cause and increasing their business contacts! A Special thanks goes to Kappa Sigma of University West Florida, as they brought their game to the field, providing 15 young men to volunteer for the day, providing support for the event in many ways. Parking cars, hanging banners, cleaning up, and helping in any way they could.

ulf Coast Kid’s House (GCKH) hosted their East Hill Yard Sale on Saturday, February 27, from 8:00 am to noon at their location on 12th Avenue in East Hill. All proceeds benefited their clients who are victims of child abuse and neglect. The event consisted of over 40 vendors selling items such as home goods, décor, artwork, baked goods, and more. Vendors were spaced accordingly to ensure social distancing and crowd safety, and Pensacola EggFest was on site grilling up breakfast and lunch items and offering their new cookbook in exchange for a donation to GCKH. “We envisioned the Palafox Market and a yard sale meeting in East Hill,” said GCKH Director of Philanthropy, Megan Chapman. “We were hoping to bring people together in a fun yet safe way while raising much needed funds for our organization. It has been a difficult year for many nonprofits in our area, and our community and those being served may suffer if we are not able to find creative ways for our supporters to stay involved.” GCKH has plans to grow and repeat this event, so stay tuned for upcoming dates. Currently Escambia County ranks number four for reported child abuse cases in the state of Florida. GCKH has seen a 57.81% increase in new child abuse investigations by the Department of Children and Families from July to October 2020. GCKH mission is to end child abuse and heal families through collaborative intervention, family support and prevention education. A
s human beings, we have people and places to care for us in times of injury and trauma. We go to hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, and we do physical therapy. Consider that wildlife creatures along the Emerald Coast have those same rehabilitation needs from injury or trauma and be inspired that there is a place for them to recover. Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge does just that and so much more for the animals who are currently unable to live in their natural habitats. Seeing a child’s face light up when they see a hawk up close for the first time or understand the concept of an orphaned or injured animal being fully rehabilitated and released back into the wild are some of the rewards that the folks at ECWR experience each day. Seeing animals go home after being on the brink of death justifies and fulfi lls all of their diligent efforts.

ECWR rescues, takes in, rehabilitates, and treats local wildlife and they involve community members as much as possible. Some citizens are even more involved by being volunteers with ECWR, but many are one-time helpers by bringing the animals in so that they can be treated. Some of those who found and brought in the animal even get to come back and release it once it has finished its rehabilitation. The Refuge does more that rehab and treat animals, they educate through various means, both onsite and off for children and adults by working with schools and community organizations to provide the best animal care services for the community. Interview with Crystie Baker, Executive Director and Denise Song, Assistant Director Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge What is the mission of Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge? Education, conservation, and rehabilitation for the welfare of Florida’s natural fauna. Geographically, we serve from Escambia to Walton and occasionally Bay counties. How is the organization funded? We are mostly dependent on the generosity of the public and granting organizations for funding. We consistently fundraise by selling bird feeder kits, having raffles on our Facebook page, and more. The community is who truly allows us to continue doing what we do and when they come to visit us, donate on our website or Facebook, or book an education program, they are helping us keep our doors open. We have received some very generous grants including one from our local Impact 100 groups and Sunday’s Child which allowed us to purchase equipment for our medical clinic, like our new x-ray machine to better treat our rehab patients. Is there a staff and are there volunteer opportunities? Crystie: We have a very small staff, all wearing many hats. Normally, we have opportunities for new volunteers, but because of COVID and how slowly we’ve been able to train and bring in new volunteers, there is currently an extensive waitlist for animal care volunteers. Denise: We do have volunteer opportunities for community groups, military, and business teams to help us with projects at the Refuge: land-clearing, garden planting, habitat building, or education filming programs. These are wonderful team-building activities and help our organization grow. How did you become involved with ECWR? Crystie: I reached out to have my wedding rehearsal dinner there. We were
looking for something non-traditional and had a great time. Right after that, the Executive Director position was posted and I immediately applied. Denise: I knew about the Wildlife Refuge from networking events and from meeting Stormy Anderson, the now-retired Executive Director of ECWR. I had lost my position with another not-for-profit due to the COVID shutdowns and was looking for the right arena. I love animals, care deeply about our native animals, conservation, and environmental issues, so this position with ECWR was a perfect fit. What are some obstacles and triumphs facing the organization? Crystie: Like everyone else, COVID has been a challenge. We opened this new facility in Navarre, planning on the revenue generated from being open to the public for the first time to sustain us and help us grow. Not only were we closed for some time, but walk-in visitors have been relatively slow. Don’t get me wrong – We’re glad to have ANY visitors! I think that our volunteer response to this challenge and COVID, in general, is a huge triumph. We have an incredible group of volunteers that give so much time, effort, and energy to our organization and the animals we are trying to help. They have really rallied over the past few months, and now that baby season has started, there’s a whole new level of dedication we are seeing from them. Denise: One of the biggest obstacles we face, even before COVID, is educating the community about what the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge and Marine Mammal Stranding Team really do and how important we are to our communities. For example: our Marine Mammal Stranding Team is permitted to respond to stranding from the Alabama/Florida Coastal line to just past WaterColor in Walton County. This team made up of our Marine Biologist Stranding
Coordinator and trained volunteers has helped whales, dolphins, and turtles untangle from fishing nets and fishing line, or administered medicine to them, while the animals were in distress, but still in the water. However, if an animal does not make it, we now have a new on-property lab to perform a necropsy (animal autopsy), providing answers to questions as to what caused the mammal to perish. The research gathered from these necropsies is a game-changer for our organization and the marine science environment. Describe a situation working with the organization that really stood out and touched you. This has to be the release of Mira, a Great Horned Owl, just released at the beginning of March. When Mira was first brought to us, it was thought that she would have to become one of our Animal Ambassadors, due to her wing injury. Animal Ambassadors are animals that remain in our care because they would not be able to care for themselves in the wild for a variety of reasons. However, Mira was showing signs to her caregivers that she would be able to return to the wild, so after almost two years of rehabilitation, Mira was released in an unpopulated area in North Santa Rosa County. There was not a dry eye in the group of people allowed to witness her release. You may view her March 19 release on our Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge Facebook page. We are open and available to host and attend other events over the rest of the spring and the summer, such as birthday parties, summer camps, school presentations, and VIP Tours. Seville’s Business After Hours event brings together local businesses and business owners every month to socialize and network after a hard day’s work. It is a happy hour-style night of networking in a relaxed, casual atmosphere. The hosts, Something Old Salvage, were celebrating two years in business and owners Anthony and Sabrina’s birthdays! W
hen most people think of canning, they think of either doomsday prepping or maybe even the Oregon Trail. But before you start worrying about dying of dysentary, you should know, canning is a cool and useful practice, and you don’t even have to start building your bunker. Canning dates back to well before our wagons were trying to ford the river. In 1795 Napolean Bonaparte, frustrated that his army’s military campaigns were “shortened” by lack of year-round food availability, offered a reward to whoever could develop a safe and dependable way to transport food for his army. After 15 years of trial and error, a brewer and confectioner named Nicholas Appert developed his method that involved heat processing food in glass jars secured with wire and sealed with wax. While this was a cool invention at the time, sealing with wax is not necessarily considered “safe” by today’s standards. However, despite the possibly high body count, this new way of preserving food was the only method for a while but it eventually led to safer, modern day canning and jarring practices. By the mid 1800s, throughout Europe, the tin canning business was in full swing. In the beginning of this industrial canning, the act of getting food safely into tin cans was a tedious, complicated and expensive process -- meaning only the wealthy could afford such a luxury with the poor and middle class left with their lowly “fresh” food. As the canning process progressed, faster and more efficient ways were developed and canned food became more available to the population. What we now know as “canning” took a little longer to perfect and really only started to pick up steam during the Civil War era when two notable names helped shape the jars we use today. John Mason invented the glass jar with a screw-on thread molded and a rubber sealed lid while Alexander Kerr developed the wide mouth jar and a metal lid with a gasket and metal ring. William Ball and his brothers got into the mix and quickly became leaders in the business by buying up small jarring companies and adding them to their empire.

Now before you start thinking this practice is strictly for the same people who do Civil War Reenactments, you should know that canning (or “jarring”) is making a comeback and has regained popularity. There are probably a few reasons for this, the pandemic, a desire to be creative, general mistrust of the government, ya know, the usual stuff. Whether you want to try your hand at making salsa, sauces, pickling or my personal favorite, fruit jams, there’s a little something for everyone in the canning world. And surprisingly, anyone can do it, no log cabin required. Two main methods used today are the water bath and pressure canning. Both are relatively easy with the method dictated by the PH of the food you’re canning. Water baths are safe for high acid foods such as tomatoes, pickles, jams
and jellies. These are sealed by being completely covered in boiling water. For low acidic foods, such as vegetables, poultry, meat and seafood (yikes!), the pressure canning method is required. Here, you place the jars in a few inches of water in a pressure cooker and heat it to 240 degrees. Although it sounds complicated and “science-y”, your recipe will guide you and ensure your finished product is safe and delicious. So saddle up those oxen, and plow your fields to prepare for the planting season, or just peruse the internet for a great recipe, buy your supplies and get to canning. You will be impressed with your own abilities and your family, friends, and neighbors will love receiving beautiful and tasty gifts from you.
Corn & Cherry Tomato Salsa
Ingredients:
5 lbs. cherry tomatoes, chopped 2 cups corn kernels (about 2 large ears fresh, but frozen thawed is fine) 1 cup red onion, finely chopped 2 teaspoons salt
½ cup fresh lime juice (about 3 large limes) 2 jalapeno peppers, seeded and minced 1 tsp. chipotle chili powder, optional 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro 6 Ball® (16 oz.) pint glass jars w/lids & bands
Directions: 1. Prepare boiling water canner. Heat jars in simmering water until ready for use. Do not boil. Wash lids in warm soapy water and set aside with bands. 2. Bring all the ingredients to a boil in a large stainless-steel or enameled saucepan. Reduce heat and simmer 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3. Ladle the hot salsa into a hot jar, leaving 1⁄2-inch headspace. Remove air bubbles. Wipe the jar rim. Center the lid on the jar. Apply the band and adjust to fingertip-tight. Place the jar in the boiling water canner. Repeat until all the jars are filled. 4. Process the jars 15 minutes, adjusting for altitude. Turn off heat; remove the lid, and let the jars stand 5 minutes. Remove the jars and cool.

This t-shirt fundraiser is a way for our community to get together in support of the families who call our House home every day. Pilot Club of Pensacola Provides $10,500 for “Florida Shade!” Program at Escambia Westgate The Pilot Club of Pensacola and Pilot International Founders Fund donated $10,500 to purchase equipment canopies and shade sails to provide protection from the sun for children who attend Escambia Westgate School. The joint venture was accomplished as part of the matching grant program with the Pilot International Founders Fund. Nearly 200 children attend programs at Escambia Westgate School. Children served range in age from 3 years to 22 years with developmental disabilities and delays. Disabilities include autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, as well as severe medical and behavioral issues. Westgate students receive educational and therapeutic services in nurturing environments to promote social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development to ensure future independence. Jobenna Sellers, Principal, said, “We serve some of our communities’ most vulnerable children. The new shade structures provided by Pilot Club of Pensacola will make it safer for them to play outside on sunny days.”

Pilot’s focus on helping people affected by brain-related disorders was adopted in 1992. Since then, approximately 50,000 adult and youth members of Pilot International have been working together to increase awareness and to raise funds for programs associated with this focus.
Seville Rotary Funds Lifesaving Know Child Abuse Training for Gulf Coast Kid’s House Seville Rotary Club made a generous $5,000 donation for Gulf Coast Kid’s House (GCKH) newly re-released Know Child Abuse Training. GCKH was a recipient of idgroup’s Brand on Us Campaign, which rebranded the previous Safe Kid Zone to Know Child Abuse. Seville Rotary’s donation allowed GCKH to edit the existing training and add a child sex trafficking component.
“This 35-minute training is free for anyone in the community and is critical to curbing child abuse in our community. It was truly a team effort – it takes a village. We are grateful to Seville Rotary and idgroup,” says GCKH Executive Director, Stacey Kostevicki. Currently Escambia County ranks number four for reported child abuse cases in the state of Florida. GCKH has seen a 57.81% increase in new child abuse investigations by the Department of Children and Families from July to October 2020. GCKH mission is to end child abuse and heal families through collaborative intervention, family support and prevention education. he Pensacola Beach Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual St. Paddy’s Day Pub Crawl on March 17. The pub crawl featured more than a dozen participating beach bars, restaurants, and hotels serving up Irish drink specials, music, and mischief all day long. This year there was no set crawl schedule as it continued from opening to closing times at all locations. Participants crawled at their own pace, in whatever order they wanted. Like in years past, to start the pub crawl Crabs We Got ‘Em offered a free breakfast with the purchase of a drink. Participating Pensacola Beach’s St. Paddy’s Day Pub Crawl locations were: Crabs We Got ‘Em, Bamboo Willie’s, Café Nola, Casino Beach Bar & Grill, Flounder’s, The Islander, Paddy O’Leary’s, Riptides Grill & Tiki Bar, Sal De Mar at Hilton, The Sandshaker, Shaggy’s, Sneaky Tiki, and Water Pig BBQ. While it’s a celebration of Irish culture and traditions, the St. Paddy’s Day Pub Crawl — in memory of event founder John Patrick “Paddy” Blake — is a fundraising event for the Pensacola Beach Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber will donate a portion of the t-shirt proceeds to Covenant Care in Paddy’s name.

n March 20, Scenic Hills Country Club hosted the 4th Annual 21Forever Golf Classic, sponsored by the SHMGA Foundation. This sold-out event brought in over 140 golfers and numerous volunteers, all with one common goal, to raise money for a good cause. Event sponsors provided door prizes and a good time as each hole offered the purple-clad golfers food, drinks and fun. The event was followed up by a shrimp boil for participants and volunteers. The annual 21Forevever Golf Tournament is in memory of Samantha Gorman, daughter of Rick and Kim Gorman. The money raised at the tournament benefits the Youth Association of Northwest Florida and The Miracle League of Pensacola, both are local programs that focus on ensuring Pensacola’s youth have access to sports programs, regardless of financial or physical limitations. What is your hometown and how did you end up in the Pensacola area? I was born and raised in Mobile and Prichard, AL, graduating from John L. LeFlore Magnet High School of Communication and Arts. I completed undergraduate studies at Auburn University Montgomery. My teaching career began in Panama City, FL. Wanting to move closer to home and to fulfi ll family obligations, I decided to relocate to Pensacola. My husband and I were recruited by Mr. Horace Jones to Escambia County School District. Initially, we commuted from Prichard to Pensacola for seven years. After becoming parents (Kalyn age 11 and Derrick Jr. age 8) and becoming more involved in the Pensacola community, we made Pensacola home in 2011. What is your profession? Education has always been my passion. As a little girl, I can remember playing school and teaching my dolls and cousins. As I reflect on what led me to education, I often revisit and reread my educational goal; I will obtain my doctorate degree in administration and become a superintendent of schools. I have completed one accomplishment, obtaining my doctorate degree, and I am currently building skills for the next venture. Education is truly my calling and passion. What are some of your favorite things about Pensacola? Pensacola offers so many opportunities to connect with people, businesses, and involvement with various nonprofit organizations. The uniqueness of Pensacola is that it’s growing, developing, and the landscape is changing to allow for expanding opportunities. Pensacola possesses a family atmosphere that is appealing to my family. Three words that best describe you. Motivated Driven, Leader. Favorite place for dining, entertainment and for outdoor activities? Really? Just one place? I love to share local dining with family and friends who are visiting. Pensacola really has some of the best local dining I’ve experienced in a city. Allow me to name a few: The Busy Bee Mercantile, Joe’s Caribe, Blue Dot, and Family Ty’s “Good Eats”. What is the one thing you do not go a day without? I do not go a day without connecting with God, and spending quality time with my family. Finish this statement, I AM PENSACOLA because… of my affi liations past and present with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Junior League of Pensacola, Leadership Pensacola, Escambia County Education Administrators Association, Impact 100, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and the Boys and Girls Club of Emerald Coast have helped me lead, unify, and serve.
