letter from the Associate Publisher Season’s greetings and welcome to 2020’s final issue of VIP Pensacola. It has been a year that has tried my patience, challenged my creativity, and showed me that we could endure more than was imaginable. Although it will become an infamous year in history, 2020 is a year I am happy to see in my rearview mirror. People faced different obstacles this year and everyone made changes to survive. VIP’s most significant barrier was producing an entertaining social magazine for our readers while adhering to the new social distancing rules that made local gatherings extinct for some months. How did we accomplish this task? With the help of good friends, advertisers, and old-fashioned ingenuity. These circumstances forced us to brainstorm different content for the magazine. Advertisers submitted photos, employees and friends carried cameras everywhere, snapping pictures of people in daily activities. We started with images of people working, shopping, golfing, boating, and children playing. The creative juices started flowing, and the shutters kept snapping as people learned to adapt and VIP Pensacola captured those changes as our pages quickly fi lled. We added new features, we covered Zoom meetings, and printed throwback pages of our favorite events from year’s past and the feedback was amazing. Thank you all for your kind words and for allowing us to help share the fun things that were happening. Suddenly the fear of surviving turned to the pride of embracing a paradigm shift to produce a social magazine, although different but still the same, fi lled with people enjoying life. I hope you found our new editorial approach entertaining and enjoyable to read. Some of it will stick as we continue covering the events you love, and an even better editorial product will be the result. Although we kept our employees working remotely and never had to lay anyone off, we had a couple of employees who had been key to our operations leave for other opportunities – and as usual through a tough transition, you almost always end up better on the other side. In this issue, enjoy seeing some of the wonderful events that were able to take place with clever social distancing measures in place. Adventure Out on page 13 takes us to Winterfest Pensacola, ranked as one of the top holiday events in the state, and on a journey that would give even the Grinch the fuzzy holiday feels. Continuing the holiday spirit, Swizzle introduces ways to make your holiday drinks lighter by using liquors that have fewer calories. In closing this issue and 2020, I would like to acknowledge the first responders who worked diligently amid chaos. I salute the health care workers who, daily, faced that which kept people in lockdown and fear. I praise the business owners who managed to pivot and stay open in an economy full of distress. To those less fortunate, please know that we miss you, and we are here to help you make a comeback. In 2020 we endured lockdowns, closures, COVID, three hurricanes, and a crumbling bridge which severed a primary travel artery. As we look to 2021, I feel confident we will dodge every dart thrown at us, and together we will all thrive. Thank YOU for supporting VIP Pensacola; please be kind, courteous, and shop local.

Winterfest 2020 Style R

story by Greg Alexander

anked as one of the top holiday events in the state, Pensacola Winterfest takes you on a journey that would give even the Grinch the fuzzy holiday feels. Winterfest transforms the historic Seville Square area into a magical land with all the holiday wonders of winter.

13-15 AdventureOut_Winterfest.indd 1

11/24/20 6:08 PM

As with all things, 2020 is bringing some edits to the celebration. The Winterfest Elves have been scurrying for months to create an experienc experience that will not sacrifice beautiful memories and holiday fun while offering healthy, safe, and socially distanced experiences. This year, families can choose between two show options. The Polar Express Tour with tap dancing hot chocolate servers or the Cajun Christmas where Louisianastyle celebrations, food, games, and fun prevail. The magical Polar Express tour is an immersion on a life-size steam engine visiting everyone’s favorite characters from the story. All on board will receive hot chocolate for the ride along this open-air tram with musical performances taking place outside the tram, giving everyone a perfect view. Capacities will be limited so dress warmly for each 20-minute tour where masks will be required for all. If that’s not enough, come ready for bed as pajamas are welcomed with prizes for those wearing the most festive ones. For a different experience, try the brand-new Cajun Christmas. The moment you enter Plaza Wonderland on Palafox Place, snow begins to fall and bells begin to ring at the opening show on the courthouse steps. Then board the tram with a delightful guide celebrating bayou style during the short ride to the Historic Village where Papa Noel, the Cajun Santa, will read The Cajun Night Before Christmas. After the story, fun continues with options to wander in the Museum of Industry, participate in a scavenger hunt, and dance with Papa Noel’s alligator team to tunes of a live jug band. Oh, and don’t miss out on the gumbo! Stay as long as you like but capacities on trolleys are limited every 30 minutes.

13-15 AdventureOut_Winterfest.indd 2

This year’s Santa experience is even better, but with a new 2020 twist. His sleigh has been tricked out to allow social distancing. You will be guided to meet one of Santa’s elves, who will be there with a list, asking children- and even parents!- what they want for Christmas. The elf will guide your whole family to sit just outside of Santa’s sleigh, atop presents. The new setting will allow a safe distance between families and Santa, while still providing the intimate memory. Santa will read your Christmas wishes aloud with you before striking a pose to take photographs (you’ll even be allowed to take off your masks for this quick professional

11/24/20 6:08 PM

photoshoot). Most interesting, there will be no queues as a reservation system has been put into place. Reservations can be made online, or assigned at the location (arrive 5-10 minutes early to your reservation and check in at the photo table). It took a pandemic for us to realize there was a way to take your kids to see Santa without standing in line. And of course, Santa’s favorite nemesis, The Grinch, will also be available for photo opportunities where you can also reserve your photo op online or in person. Even the Grinch will be carefully practicing social distancing with his set designed for great photos and guest safety. After your photo purchase, you will be led to the Grinch’s throne, located behind Santa’s sleigh. While he LOATHES visitors, the Grinch will reluctantly allow you to intrude upon his solitude and sit on top of a few trashcan seats for a photo. He likes to ask children what they don’t want for Christmas! Be careful, Mr. Grinch has some tricks up his sleeve.

With all of this new fun in store, attendees will not even notice that the Elf Parade, Fireworks Display, and Traditional Performance tours have been taken out of the lineup in attempts to enhance health and safety. Additional cleaning measures by staff and mask requirements for all will add to the safety of everyone who attends. Santa has even recruited Thing 1 and Thing 2 as safety checkers around the Christmas Plaza. They are very excited to help guests play this new game called “social distancing” and to add some fun to these new guidelines. P

he 2nd Annual Golf Ball Classic at Marcus Pointe Golf Club this year was held under more than perfect skies on November 5. Chick-fi l-A (Nine mile Road) was on hand to provide the hot tasty bird for all of the excited Golfers. At approximately 12:00 p.m., more than 100 golfers scattered for a shotgun start, taking part promoting and supporting Junior Achievement of Northwest Florida and First Tee Gulf Coast. People like Ashlee Simpson and Ildi Hosman of Junior Achievement of Northwest Florida are providing solid foundations to inspire and prepare young individuals to succeed in a global economy, and Marty Stanovich of the First Tee of Gulf Coast Florida leads the youth organization that teaches golf as a life-long sport to instill character education through the game’s inherent “Nine Core Values.” This event took voluminous volunteers, numerous local sponsors, too many hours to count, and the workforce for preparedness was second to none. “This was the 2nd Annual Golf Ball Classic next year’s event is going to be even bigger and better, and people will be begging to get in,” said Doug Rogers, honoring his late brother, Steve Rogers.

n Wednesday, November 18 the Greater Pensacola Chamber hosted the State of the Military, which is part of a series of monthly events, all made possible by Navy Federal Credit Union. One of the lead speakers, Capt. Timothy Kinsella also known as “Lucky,” spoke to the great people of the city about the updates on Naval Air Station Pensacola and the part it has in making Pensacola a greater community. The presenters spoke about major events that have affected the city and the Naval Air Station over the course of the year of 2020, including COVID-19, hurricane Sally that recently hit Pensacola, and most recently, the elections. The event was hosted at the Barkley House in the garden area. The weather was perfect for an outdoor occasion with the fall season upon us. Before the speakers presented their updates on NAS Pensacola the guests were welcomed by happy smiles and a wide variety of lunch options including sandwiches and salads. The private event was lovely and peaceful in the garden area, with just the right temperature to appreciate a meal outside. This event informed the locals on the updates NAS Pensacola has and will be working on in the future to brighten our beautiful city. Having the event at the Barkley House outdoors with the Florida sun and a fall breeze was an added bonus.

Holidays

for the

story by Courtney Murray

F

or 2020, many folks have decked out their homes early for the holiday season. For those of you that haven’t – maybe you will find a little inspiration here… for those of you who won’t – you can live vicariously through the trends that so many others have decided on for the year. Most of us are probably spending a little more time at home and can certainly stand an extra festive glow. If that includes you – then bright colors are the cue. Technicolor is on point and embracing vivid colors can bring joy and brighten up any room. It is not necessary to repaint the place, just throw in some colorful barware and retro, multi-color string lights to amp up the ambience. Many people are craving the classics this year, as well. This takes us back to lighted ceramic trees or, depending on your generation, maybe metallic foil ones. Shiny and bright colored glass ornaments where you never fail to break at least one in the carton will lead you back to your childhood. Whether you are concerned about recycling or in case you just want to offer a cool and different flair to your gifting, try the art of furoshiki. No, it is not a karate move, just a way of wrapping gifts with fabric and tying a knot. It will make anything that is inside a little more fun (while you help save the planet). This year, trendsetters are planning on a blue Christmas – which is not a bad thing. Indigo and navy accents are huge hits in everything from table linens and tree skirts to ornaments and lights. Tie dye, which has been ever present in design this year, is not going away for the holidays as many shades, especially the blues are popular choices. Door décor is particularly popular this year. This expression of holiday cheer will greet not only your guests, but anyone passing by your place. We are not talking just wreaths, but swags, garlands, bows, and lights collectively create a warm welcome each time you come home. Natural elements such as fresh greens, dried foliage, raw wood, and pinecones are always visible in home decor this time of year. You can use them as they are or break out a can of Krylon and make them any color you wish. Pop your pine cones in the oven for a few minutes and they will stretch wide open, making them easy to paint, flock, or bleach -- or just leave them au naturale. All of these elements contribute to wreaths and garlands, or to tablescapes by just filling a bowl or vessel. Farmhouse neutrals have been the rage for the last few years and they are going nowhere for the holidays. Farmhouse Christmas searches are up 900% over the last 5 years according to Google trends. This is an easy, wide-reaching look to accomplish with knitted stockings, neutral colors, kraft papers, flocked wreaths, and pillows, ribbons and bows in combinations of plaids, checks, and burlap fabrics. While there are many trends and new ways to smarten up your holiday style, the best colors for your holiday décor are ones that match your existing colors scheme. Play off of what you already have and re-purpose some of those things in your Christmas closet that you have not used in years. You can change the look of almost anything with a little spray paint or some sandpaper, and if you don’t like the end result – then there is your excuse to try a different trend this year.

t is estimated that there are 30,000 people in Escambia County without health insurance. Now, with COVID and unemployment rates increasing, healthcare needs are huge, especially for those without insurance. The Health and Hope Clinic located at 1718 East Olive Road is a faith based, free and charitable medical and dental clinic meeting a plethora of healthcare needs of those who are uninsured and cannot afford care. Currently, the clinic is seeing a tremendous increase in new patients.

Health and Hope Clinic has remained faithful to their mission, even during the pandemic. They have remained open and have added additional wrap-around services including counseling, free food boxes, free immunizations through a CVS National Grant, free Narcan for anyone concerned for a loved one taking opioids through an IMPACT 100 grant, and they have established new partnerships all over Pensacola to be able to better address the social determinants of their patients. The clinic has linked arms with Pathways for Change and Teen Challenge where, upon entering those treatment programs, patients are enrolled with Health and Hope for all their medical and dental needs. Baptist Hospital provides Health and Hope Clinic with free x-rays and labs, as well as referrals for specialty services. While the Health and Hope Clinic provides a medical home for low-income, uninsured patients, they are also helping area hospitals as they are providing care for those who might otherwise use the emergency room for basic care. Additionally, Health and Hope Clinic benefits local businesses by improving the health status, employability, and productivity of a substantial part of their workforce. Operating through support of local businesses, partners, and private donors, last year the clinic provided $2.5 million dollars’ worth of medical and dental services. This was also made possible by their 222 volunteers and 77 licensed healthcare providers who donate their time and skill. So many of the clinic’s patients have jobs or had jobs prior to the pandemic, making just enough money to put food on the table and healthcare is not top priority. Many of their patients haven’t been seen by a doctor in 20 plus years and are very sick. The Health and Hope Clinic helps get them back on their feet so they can get back in the work force. Part of that effort involves offering them hope. The clinic has encouragers on hand that can pray with the patients or just listen and love on them. The Health and Hope Clinic has earned the right to be heard and continues to show patients respect and dignity by not just providing healthcare, but by building relationships with patients and becoming their medical home. To become a patient, or to volunteer or donate, visit HealthAndHopeClinic.org or telephone 850-479-4456.

Interview with Sally Bergosh, Executive Director Health and Hope Clinic

What is the mission of Health & Hope Clinic? Our mission is to provide HEALTH and HOPE to the hurting. We provide comprehensive healthcare and dental to the underserved and uninsured in Pensacola and surrounding areas. Our immediate goals are to increase access to care by expanding our hours of operation, recruiting more medical and dental providers, as well as office volunteers. What services are provided? Our services include primary medical and dental, women’s health, chronic disease management, specialty care, diagnostics, laboratory, medications, Patient Assistance Program, counseling, optometry, chiropractic, dermatology, health education, and an encourager ministry. Where does funding for Health & Hope Clinic come from? Health and Hope Clinic relies on the generosity from charitable organizations, local partners, businesses, grants, and private donors. We do not collect any fees from patients for the services rendered. The Health and Hope Clinic is recognized as exempt under IRS Code 501C3. We also consider ourselves an education clinic, as we have interns from FSU Medical School, UWF healthcare programs, PSC, Pensacola Christian College, and FAMU pharmacy students. We love providing healthcare students real, handson experiences at the clinic. In the last

few months we have had 9 of our regular volunteer students accepted into medical schools all over the country. I have to say, we write amazing recommendation letters-LOL! The truth is, we have amazing volunteers that go on to do GREAT things. Sometimes, we even have those “full-circle” stories of students that used to volunteer at Health and Hope and are now volunteering as a licensed medical provider. Health and Hope Clinic was recognized this year by the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics as a GOLD standard clinic providing the highest level of quality healthcare. How did you become involved with Health & Hope Clinic? I became involved with Health and Hope Clinic when they held their first Christmas Gala Fundraiser at their brand-new building in 2013. My husband and I were hooked right away, as we understood the mission and the HUGE needs in our community. The Health and Hope Clinic is a faith-based organization and I am proud to say we take the “Hope” side as a HUGE priority. What is the most rewarding part of your involvement with the organization? We get letters from patients and contributions from past patients that recognize the gap in their healthcare we were able to provide for them, at a low-point in their lives. We love hearing their stories and being reminded of our “why”! It becomes confirmation why we are at Health and Hope Clinic-every single

day! I no longer feel bad asking for support of Health and Hope Clinic, because I know how much value it is bringing to our community and our 1000- plus patients. How can someone become involved as a provider, a volunteer, or a donor? Many times, people fall in love with Health and Hope Clinic’s mission, but are afraid of it being too comprehensive to volunteer. If you have a heart for people and want to come help, we will find you a “home.” We need people to help at our front desk, interview new patients, help facilitate resources, referrals, medical chart audits, etc. We also have some of the top medical and professional talent in the county volunteering during their “off time.” Our program is part of the Volunteer Health Care Provider Program and the State of Florida Department of Health, which provides sovereign immunity to our licensed healthcare professionals. Some providers volunteer once a week or twice a month. Some of our doctors have their own private practices, while others come from our surrounding hospitals, while others might be recently retired. Regardless, they create their own schedule and are appreciated so much!

he Women’s Council of Realtors gathered at the Scenic Hills Country Club to host their Save a Life: Stop Human Trafficking Summit on November 18. The council saw that there was a very major need to spread the word about this subject and started the best way they knew how to approach it, by holding a luncheon in 2019. They soon found that the magnitude of information that needed to be addressed would require more time, a beautiful location, and key speakers. This summit was the culmination of hard work, passion, and the determination of like-minded individuals who are fighting to end the major problem that is human trafficking in our area. During the event, guest speakers Joan Irby from Guardian ad Litem, Genna Barlow from NISSI Worldwide, Alicia Tappan from The Secret Place, and keynote speaker Brad Dennis from Called2Rescue. They each shared their experiences from working through the child welfare system, being a survivor of human trafficking themselves, being able to identify the signs, and how to provide long term care for survivors who do get removed from their situation effectively. Newly elected Sherriff Chip Simmons was also in attendance and spoke about the ways the Escambia County Sherriff’s Office would be working hand in hand with these organizations to develop better ways to identify where these situations are most likely to occur and work towards eliminating the problem entirely.

Les Harlequins New Members

Tea and Social photos & story by Alex Mason

n Sunday, October 25, Les Harlequins hosted their New Member Tea and Social to introduce their newest members to the group. One of the oldest krewes in Pensacola, Les Harlequins is an all-female social club organized in 1946 by military wives. The primary purpose is to hold an annual masked ball in the pre-Lenten season. Historically, Les Harlequins hosted the first ball to open the Pensacola Mardi Gras season which would be the first Friday or Saturday following Twelfth Night. In the early years, Les Harlequins membership was limited to 110 ladies. Today, Les Harlequins is limited to 130 members. New member nominees must be sponsored by one existing member with the executive board voting on acceptance. Luckily, guest tickets to the Annual Masked Ball are available with the invite of an existing member. The event featured an exceptional group of strong women, including past president BJ Tronu, Queen Barbara McLean, and King Frank Pilcher’s wife, Peggy Pilcher. The theme of the Tea was “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” which inspired lovely dresses and derby style hats worn by all the women. The delicious hors d’oeuvres were provided by the lovely ladies of the board and were enjoyed by all. During the event, Les Harlequin’s president, Debbie Sapp, welcomed the new members and introduced them to her board of directors. She brought out examples of ball attire building excitement for the upcoming ball in January.

EAT, DRINK, AND BE SKINNY?

A

h, the holidays, a time when “Eat, Drink and Be Merry” is not only acceptable but highly encouraged. 2020 hasn’t been an easy time to keep in shape. The quarantine weight, plus the hurricane snacks, along with the election stress drinks, combined with the Wine Wednesdays, Thirsty Thursdays, and okay … I think I see the problem here. Anyway, this year may look different for us but that won’t stop most of us from celebrating like we don’t have a Mardi Gras dress to fit into. The good thing is that cocktails have come a long way. Skinny cocktails are a thing and are a wonderful way to enjoy the holidays -- without the guilt. A good way to make your holiday drink lighter is by using a liquor that has fewer calories. Vodka, gin, and tequila are all good choices, although the higher the proof, the higher the calories, and also the higher the probability you’ll tell that annoying relative how you really feel. Another way to curb calories is to use sparkling water or light soda as a base, or if the recipe calls for wine, mix sparkling water with wine to cut the calories in half. Hard seltzers have made a huge splash this year. Seltzers can be used as a base or on their own. Just add a garnish like cranberries or mint and you’ll have a festive drink that’s low in both calories and carbs. While some hard seltzers taste like the fruit simply rolled past the distillery, there are some seltzers that pack a punch of flavor. Crook and Marker’s organic hard 38

11/24/20 6:34 PM

seltzers have enough taste to satisfy even those who are skeptical of the hard seltzer trend. With so many flavors to choose from, the options are endless. Along with using lighter liquors, bases, and seltzers, there are also some other ways to save the calories that go along with holiday libations. For instance, eating a meal before you get the drinks flowing will stop you from snacking on unhealthy (but really, really tasty) treats. Also, try drinking a glass of water in between cocktails -- you’ll still have a drink in your hand but the end result will be different. You’ll be more hydrated and less likely to be “up a tree” the next morning. Lastly, as the quote goes, “Who is this moderation I’m supposed to be drinking with?” This is the tough one …. drink with moderation. I know it’s not as fun but it’s called “adulting” and apparently it’s what we’re supposed to do. If the holiday rush has you cramped for time, ready-made skinny cocktail mixes are here to save your party. Whether you want a festive margarita, trendy cosmos, or a bloody mary to serve at brunch, there’s a cocktail mix for whatever you fancy. Make sure you read the label of these mixes, some don’t contain alcohol so you have to mix in your own, while others are “booze-in” so you should probably mix in your own. Kidding, see the paragraph above regrading moderation. Has 2020 been the best year? No. Would I ever want to repeat it? Absolutely not. But it wasn’t all bad with friends doing mental health checks on each other during home-schooling and neighbors sharing food after hurricanes. We are better, stronger, and more resilient for it. So, enjoy the family, friends, and festivities this holiday season. Eat, drink, and be merry and may the only guilt you feel be the guilt your mother bestows on you.

The Poinsettia Ingredients:

2 ounces cranberry juice 4 ounces champagne, prosecco, or other dry, sparkling white wine 1/2 ounce orange liqueur

Directions:

Pour cranberry juice into a champagne flute and top with sparkling wine. Then top with a floater of orange liqueur.

he 3rd Annual Golf Ball Gala was held on November 13. Over 165 star-studded look-a-like Masters Champions got hooked into their best dress golf apparel, and everyone was “Par” for the course “Putting” their way to a great charity cause. This fabulous Masters inspired event with a “CaddyShack” twist was really something to share. Under the starlit skies and in open spacious grounds at Court of De Luna, a ten-piece band called The Bay Bridge Band provided live entertainment throughout the evening. The mission of The First Tee of North West FL is to impact the lives of young people by promoting character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf. They seek to serve and to instill character education through the game’s Nine Core Values. Mr. Marty Stanovich, executive director of First Tee wasn’t about to be out dressed and “Teed Up” by exhibiting a few precarious golf outfits. As always, this is never a small undertaking, thanks to all those who made this very special event take place.

he Pensacola Symphony Orchestra Guild held their monthly luncheon on November 4 at Scenic Hills Country Club. The theme for the event was “Thankful for the Music.” As per tradition, the luncheon featured a distinguished musical artist to perform for the group and this month’s guest was Christopher Conger. Christopher plays the violin, accordion, and classical piano. The Guild’s next luncheon will be held at the Pensacola Yacht Club on December 2, with the theme “Home for the Holidays.” The musical program will be presented by Ellen Vinson and Bobby Van Deussen. The guild also discussed the future planning of their annual “Magnolia’s and White Linen” event, tentatively scheduled for May 6, 2021. The Pensacola Symphony Orchestra Guild (PSOG) came into being when the Greater Pensacola Symphony Orchestra Women’s Auxiliary, originally formed in 1956 by a small group of visionary and innovative women who loved classical music, re-organized in 1973 to become the current PSOG. Today they are a non-profit organization of volunteers who assist and support the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra while promoting musical education and cultural enrichment throughout the area. The PSOG holds several fundraisers throughout the year to help support the symphony and provide opportunities for students who wish to learn more about musical education.

CHS will use the funds to help families facing hard situations compounded by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Studies show 8 million Americans have slipped below the poverty line this year as a direct result of the pandemic. This, along with isolation, uncertainty, poor mental health and job losses have impacted families throughout Florida. Florida’s panhandle also weathered three hurricanes this year, compounding the difficulties for local families. The Sansing Foundation – a longtime supporter of CHS – increased its annual gift to a very generous $100,000 to help local children and their families find the support they need to overcome the challenges of 2020. “The Sansing Foundation is passionate about giving back to the community, and the Children’s Home Society of Florida has a longstanding history of caring for our community’s most vulnerable children and families,” said Sandy Sansing of The Sansing Foundation. The Sansing Foundation’s gift will help more families stay safe, strong and together with crisis intervention as well as in-home parenting support with CHS’ Healthy Families program. This donation will also benefit students and their families of C.A. Weis Elementary, and assist homeless youth by providing life skills and job training, housing, mental health counseling, and more. “This has been a tremendously difficult year for everyone, but especially for our families that were struggling before the pandemic,” said Lindsey Cannon, 56

regional executive director of Children’s Home Society of Florida, serving Western Florida. “With the Sansing Foundation’s generosity, more families and children will have access to support, hope and a brighter future.”

44th Annual Stepping Out in Style Off Runway Fashion Show Raises More Than $69,000 The 44th Annual Stepping Out in Style Off Runway Fashion Show, presented by the Women’s Board of Baptist Health Care Foundation, raised more than $69,000 to benefit the Foundation’s COVID-19 Response Fund. “We are grateful to the Women’s Board for supporting Baptist’s highest priority COVID-19 response efforts,” said KC Gartman, chief development officer for Baptist Health Care. “These funds help support the safety measures implemented for patients and team members, including expanded isolation areas of Baptist hospitals to create additional negative pressure rooms as well as provide protective equipment and detection kits.”

The virtual event featured the latest fashions from local boutiques including Bluetique, Jennie Barrow – independent Cabi stylist, The Market & Mainly Shoes, and The South Outfitters, as well as a silent auction and chance drawing for Bere’ Jewelers. Pensacola attorney Aaron Watson and his wife Kimberly Watson have announced the launch of The Watson Family Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The Foundation assists Northwest Florida families with hardship relief, school readiness support, faith-based outreach, and mentorship to local families. The Foundation is a dream and collaboration of the Watson Family that has received tremendous community encouragement since the establishment of the Watson Firm, PLLC, in 2016 – a personal injury law firm in Pensacola. Mrs. Watson, co-founder and President of the Foundation, was inspired by the incredible outpouring of support and spirit within the Pensacola community in organizing the Annual Thanksgiving Dinner Giveaway, Backpack Giveaway, Christmas Giveaway, and philanthropic events throughout Pensacola. These events have become mainstays in Pensacola and birthed the Foundation’s mission to “bridge the gap” that separates deserving families from the support and guidance needed to lead thriving and meaningful lives. Partnerships to further the Foundation’s mission have already been established with many Northwest Florida organizations to grow the generous giving and bless those in need. The Foundation has also launched a new website that allows donors to contribute online. Anyone may visit www.watsonfamilyfoundation.com, and donate to support the Foundation and those in need. More importantly, those in need may request assistance directly on the website for various programs. Each application for help will be evaluated individually by the Foundation. Please feel free to visit the website for more information and show support with your generous donations that are life-changing!

unday’s Child hosted their Sunset Soiree on November 12; taking every Covid-19 precaution possible, and presenting the event outdoors. This will be their only membership event during this season. The Studer Community Institute courtyard, right off of Garden Street, provided the perfect location for guests, members, and interested individuals to hear the message Sunday’s Child has to offer. Live entertainment was provided by the Belmont Youth Band, as well as a brief evening of light snacks, wine, and socially distanced comradery. Masks were provided upon arrival, sanitizing stations were on site, and individual snacks and beverages were safely served during the event. Gary Rhodes spoke about the 7-year history of Sunday’s Child, and showcased guest speakers from past grant recipients, including Golden Elite Track and Field Club, as well as Oasis Florida. Attendees were encouraged to meet and greet with Sunday’s Child board members and acquire more information on how to become a member, sponsor, or participate in a scholarship.

PENSACOLA NORTH ROTARY 5TH ANNUAL

Charity Classic Car Show photos & story by Kevin Houghton

G

oing to car meets and cars events are pretty much surefire ways to meet other car nerds. They are great local gatherings taking you on a rolling tour of some the most beautiful and rare classic cars ever made as seen through the loving eyes of their doting owners. Everyone comes out to enjoy cars and great food, such as The Po Boy Shack, who catered this event. Many already know this, but car people are a real eclectic and super friendly bunch. Pensacola North Rotary 5th Annual Charity Classic Car Show was no exception on November 7. Mike Higgins, event chairman, noted, “We should have around 150 old and newer cars on hand today.” Not to be outdone, there were a few backyard ideas. “Lets see what I can do with this thing,” said Gerry Moore. He and his wife Karen consolidated a car and yes, a boat; together it came to a car, and it’s a land lover for sure, so if you see a local boat sailing down the road, don’t be alarmed. It’s a car! The oldest entry in the event, driving everyone mad, was a beautiful 1921 Ford Model “T” all original, owned by Mr. Samuel Roberts of Pensacola. It’s no easy task to gather such an event, so a big honkin shout out to Leon Hirsch, Walter Pierce, Shannon Anderson, and Mike Higgins for assembling this fantastic car event. Award trophies provided by local businessman Eddie Hill; Award Masters Inc., of Pensacola.

I AM PENSACOLA

Chip Simmons

What is your hometown, what brought you to PENSACOLA and how long have you been here? I consider Pensacola to be my hometown. While I was born overseas on a military base, Pensacola has always been home. I have been here for 47 years attending Bellview Elementary, Bellview Middle, and Pine Forest High School. What is your profession and what led you to choose it? I am a career law enforcement officer. Beginning at the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office before moving to the Pensacola Police Department where I served for 29 years, the last 5 were spent as Police Chief. I moved to assistant county administrator for a while before coming back to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and served as Chief Deputy for 4 years. In November I was elected the 45th Sheriff of Escambia County. I entered the field of law enforcement to make a difference, and to stand up for those in need. What do you like best about Pensacola? What makes it unique? I really enjoy the generosity of the people of Pensacola. Additionally, there are so many things to do here. You can fish, hunt, go downtown, enjoy beautiful weather, or watch the Blue Angels. Three words that best describe you. Optimistic, Competitive, Thankful Favorite Things you like about Pensacola. It is probably the opportunities; educational opportunities, recreational opportunities, or weather-related opportunities; All with a dose of southern hospitality.

Finish this statement, I AM PENSACOLA because… I love Pensacola. Pensacola is my home and very much a part of my life. I am fi lled with so many fond memories. I still remember shopping at stores that have long since been closed. I recognize the names of our forefathers. I love the fact that Pensacola is a military friendly community and that we share the highs of summer festivals and downtown parades as well as the sorrows of the terrorist attack on Pensacola NAS and the many hurricanes. We are resilient, we are generous, we are Pensacola. And I am proud to be a part of it.
