A Lens of Beauty

I recently had an opportunity to see a local art exhibit by Vincent van Gogh. I knew a bit about the artist, and I appreciate his work. From the moment I stepped into the room until I left, I was completely captivated.

Van Gogh poured his heart and soul into each masterpiece, giving us a glimpse into his very essence. You could feel the sadness and witness the highs and lows he experienced throughout his life. It was as if he shared a piece of himself in every brushstroke until he had nothing left to give. The tragic ending of such a talented individual left me pondering the importance of focusing on the good rather than dwelling on the bad in our own lives. Inspired by this realization, I made a conscious effort to appreciate the beauty in nature, people, and life itself over the weeks that followed.

My recent high school reunion was an eye-opening experience. Some people who didn’t show up made negative comments on social media, claiming they had better things to do. However, those of us who attended had a fantastic time reconnecting and sharing stories about our current lives. I’m already looking forward to the next reunion, curious to see where everyone will be in five years.

During my reunion trip to West Virginia, I stayed in a mountaintop Airbnb cabin. The sunrise was breathtaking with the clouds adding an extra stroke of beauty. Surprisingly, the owner messaged me, apologizing for the clouds obscuring the sunrise. I am sharing photos of the clouded sunrise here with you let me know your thoughts. While sitting in a restaurant, I witnessed a child’s pure joy as dessert was served. Her excitement brought a smile to my face, but I overheard someone complaining about the noise. Perhaps the art exhibit had opened my eyes a little wider. In a world often filled with chaos and negativity, it’s easy to overlook the incredible beauty that surrounds us every day. From the awe-inspiring wonders of nature to the small moments of joy in our everyday lives, there is an abundance of beauty just waiting to be appreciated and celebrated.

We should cultivate mindfulness and learn to appreciate the small things in life. Take notice of the simple pleasures, like a warm cup of tea, a stunning sunset, or a heartfelt conversation with a loved one. Practice gratitude for the present moment and find beauty in the ordinary. Engage in acts of kindness and compassion towards others and activities that bring you joy. I challenge you to seek the fun, embrace the unexpected, and try to see things through a lens of beauty instead of darkness.

White-Wilson Community Foundation’s

Annual Little Black Dress Party

For over 10 years, White-Wilson Community Foundation has put on their black-tie gala, The Little Black Dress Party. The proceeds build partnerships that bring health and wellness programs to underserved people in Okaloosa, Santa Rosa and Walton Counties.

With a theme of CONTINUUM, this was the return of the popular Little Black Dress Party that had been on hold due to the pandemic since 2020. Guests were eager to resume the gala – this year’s LBDP had a sold-out attendance of 450+ well-dressed guests partying for a cause in the Magnolia Ballroom at Sandestin with Honorary Chairs, Dr. Patrick and Mrs. Sandra Anastasio. Concluding with DJ music and dancing, the energetic evening also had entertainment by the Luminary Entertainment Company dressed in festive lights, a silent auction, wine pull and a live auction by auctioneer Jeff Jourdan.

Aletha’s Legacy Fundraiser & Kalah Hathcock Birthday Celebration

Aletha’s Legacy was formed to provide quality education for children in Liberia and a safe place for them to learn and grow. Through individual donations and fundraisers, food, water, shelter, and medical care are given to children who have no safe place to go. On August 26, the organization was welcomed into Hugh & Kalah Hathcock’s home in Destin to celebrate Kalah’s birthday and participate in a Kendra Scott fundraising trunk show.

“Today, Aletha’s Legacy is partnering with Kendra Scott for a giveback event where 20% of the trunk show proceeds will be given to the organization,” said Kalah Hathcock, Director of Marketing & Events at Aletha’s Legacy. “The proceeds will go directly to the school we are renovating in Liberia. It was one story and could barely hold the 100 students that were enrolled, and due to the increase to 500 students we need at least a second story. Additionally, we are trying to add square footage whereby the community can rent out space for events such as weddings or conferences, subsequently raising more funds to support the school.”

Founded to provide support to underprivileged children in Liberia and Africa; Aletha’s Legacy has raised thousands of dollars to restore a society ravaged by war, disease and poverty.

it’s hard not to fall in love with the lifestyle. I have lived in Okaloosa County my entire life and have gotten to see the immense growth this area has gone through.

Since I was young, my family has owned boats and boating has always been a passion of mine. From fishing to pleasure, I have so many fond memories that I have made with my family. Since I joined this industry in 2015 and began what has now become a career for me, my ultimate goal has always been to help others. If you have ever done business with us at Emerald Coast Marine, whether that be at the marina, the service department or our sales department, it’s likely that you have worked with or met me at some

point in time. Like most people in this industry, I started at the bottom of the food chain and worked my way up the ladder. I was considered a lot porter when I first entered the boating business, assisting with pretty much anything that was needed of me. From washing boats and transporting boats, to sweeping the floors and taking out the trash. There wasn’t a task that was too large or too small. After doing that for about a year, I was quickly promoted to a position working directly with customers. This role was as a Parts Advisor where I worked to source many different parts for our service department. I learned very quickly what was required of me to become a business professional and how to provide exceptional customer service.

My tenure of working in our service department lasted for about three and a half years before I made the ultimate leap into sales. I made the transition to become a Marine Consultant & Broker in January of 2021 and needless to say, these were unprecedented times in the marine industry. COVID-19 was a complete shellshock for this country. No one expected things to change as drastically as they did. The future of the marine industry was uncertain. However, to our surprise, boat sales skyrocketed as it was one of the only pastimes families could enjoy during the lockdowns. With the demand for boats increasing and the supply decreasing due to workforce restrictions, boats became a hot commodity. Sales has been a great blessing for me and I look forward to continued success moving forward. Being able to find the perfect boat for my customers and making all of their dreams come true brings me great joy. Since I have had the opportunity to work in every department in our company, I have a great understanding of how to provide the best experience for my customers.

Working with boats, the most common question I get is, “What boat do you have?” Sadly, my answer as of late is I am boatless! God willing, that will change very soon. When I am not boating with my family, you can find me on the golf course or even in the air over the beautiful Emerald Coast. You guessed it, I am a private pilot! It has always been a goal of mine to become a pilot and by the grace of God, along with a strong determination, I made that goal come to fruition.

Emerald Coast Big Game Fishing Club Sportsman’s Ball

The Mardi Gras ball of Emerald Coast sportfishing was held on September 16 at the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Convention Center on Okaloosa Island. As the culmination of its busy year, Emerald Coast Big Game Fishing Club (ECBGFC) hosted its annual Sportsman’s Ball to celebrate sport fishing and conservation along the northern Gulf Coast. With everything from a 360-photo booth to a silent auction, attendees watched college football, told stories and enjoyed a night of fun while supporting their favorite sportfishing club.

“This is our second annual Sportsman’s Ball, and we are celebrating the past year with dinner, drinks and dancing,” said Crystal LaFosse, Founder & Director of the Emerald Coast Big Game Fishing Club. “Thank you to everyone that has supported us and made this night possible. Without our members, sponsors and the support from the community our club would not be here.”

Founded in January 2022, ECBGFC hosts a variety of tournaments and is the only organization along the Emerald Coast to host a catch-and-release only billfish division. Additionally, ECBGFC has sponsored Destin High School’s accredited fishing class and also awards scholarships to art students in Okaloosa County and Walton County through its Destin for Success scholarship program.

Business After Hours

Chambers of commerce form a bond between businesses and the community and oftentimes there is also a bond between area chambers. On August 29, these bonds were expressed as the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce teamed up with the Destin Chamber of Commerce to hold their annual Multi-Chamber Business After Hours (BAH).

Sponsored and hosted by the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Convention Center, scores of people crowded the halls for this annual event. As a venue, the convention center offers a variety of spaces and services for everything from conferences to concerts, and on that hot August day the center was set aside for the area chambers. Offering an end-of-the-day networking opportunity to help meet new clients, promote business, and expand networks Business After Hours events are a great way to wind down after a day at work. In addition to the networking, jokes and storytelling, a BAH will generally have refreshments, hors d’oeuvres and door prizes. Both area chambers have active calendars and offer a variety of benefits to businesses, to join or learn more, check their Facebook pages.

Women’s Hall of Fame

Induction Ceremony

In 1995, the Okaloosa County Commission on the Status of Women (OCCSW) was established by the Board of County Commissioners. With a mission to eliminate barriers to achievement for women, OCCSW recognizes and honors women who have made significant contributions toward improving the status of women and other citizens of Okaloosa County. On August 28, OCCSW held the annual Women’s Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Convention Center.

“The Women’s Hall of Fame is an annual event that is held by the Okaloosa County Commission on the Status of Women,” said Sabina Zunguze, Chair of OCCSW. “We hold this event every August to commemorate the achievements of women in Okaloosa County. Since 1995, over 130 women have been inducted and today we are honoring five women whose achievements span everything from military service to leadership.”

While the Hall of Fame recognizes area women that have made significant contributions to the county, in 2019 OCCSW launched its non-profit arm to fund activities to support the needs of women and children in the community. OCCSW holds monthly meetings at the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce and attendance is open to the public.

VIP Destin Cover Reveal Party

The clients and business associates of VIP Destin Magazine gathered for a Cover Reveal Party at Bric à Brac Restaurant and Bar in Destin on September 6. The atmosphere was buzzing as attendees arrived. Everyone was excited to see the latest magazine before it hit the stands.

The September cover photo was revealed with gorgeous local models wearing the hottest trends in clothing, jewelry, and accessories at the Summer of Fashion Photo Shoot. The issue also featured Leading Ladies from their area making a tremendous impact in local businesses and our community.

All enjoyed the amazing food and drinks offered by Bric à Brac while connecting with friends and colleagues from the area. The group was welcomed by Verla Price, Associate Publisher, who thanked them for coming and their continued support of the Magazine. The evening wrapped up with door prizes that guests were eager to carry home.

September Tourism & Hospitality Luncheon

The Destin Chamber has many opportunities for members to connect with each other and one of those ways is through group participation. Throughout the year, the Tourism & Hospitality Group holds luncheons where guest speakers talk about the industry and bring attendees up to speed on what’s going on in the area. On September 20, the group held one of their five luncheons and this one was hosted by the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park; more specifically, it was a sneak peek at the new Dolphin Oasis.

Built on two acres of the property, the Dolphin Oasis was designed to be an immersive and natural experience mirroring the beauty of the Emerald Coast.

“Built around 3 pillars, the habitat addresses animal welfare, guest experience, along with conservation and education,” said Patrick Berry, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. The multi-million-dollar expansion has been years in the making and upon its completion, the Dolphin Oasis will not only have educational shows, but will also have the ability to host events ranging from weddings to team-building events.

Normally held January, March, May, September, and November the Tourism & Hospitality Group luncheons offer networking opportunities as well as presentations from area experts in the hospitality and tourism industry.

As well as being active with Sportsman Gives Back, Saving Grace Women’s Home, and over 25 sports teams and high schools in the Panhandle. Ian and Haley Blaise, owners of Cruisin’ Tikis moved to Destin about six years ago from the Pacific Northwest, where Haley is from. Ian, a native of Miami, Florida, spent his life on the water. From growing up on a 30ft sailboat to graduating from Maine Maritime Academy Summa Cum Laude then traveling the world to many different ports. As a MASTER Unlimited Oceans, Master of Towing and Master of Aux Sail 100 GRT Oceans, he spent a lot of time away from home. Ian wanted to spend more time with family but still needed to be involved with the water. After he spotted the tikis in South Florida, Ian saw it as an amazing and unique opportunity to do what he loves and be with his family. The best of both worlds!

In the beginning, Ian and Haley started with one tiki in Destin. Because of their attention to detail and consistent efforts to improve their services and seek opportunities, they have expanded across the panhandle and have a total of 16 boats. On August 31, Destin’s YPs met for an evening of networking and fellowship.

The Market Shops in Miramar Beach is known for its boutiques and restaurants, however, high on the list for locals and visitors alike is the annual Bloody Mary Festival which is held every October. Hosting over 1,000 attendees in 2022, this annual event has raised tens of thousands of dollars for Habitat For Humanity – Walton County. On September 21, The Market Shops hosted the Walton Area Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Business After Hours (BAH).

“Today we’re welcoming the Walton Area Chamber of Commerce, and we are hoping to make this a recurring event where locals will learn more about the merchants,” said Bob Duncan, President, CenterCore Properties, LLC. With several new merchants, BAH attendees were able meet and network with these new businesses.

After checking in, BAH attendees were given a punch card directing them to visit participating Market Shops merchants to learn about the businesses and have the chance to win gift cards and prizes. In addition to the door prizes there was food, beverages and music by Chasing Gypsy in the Gazebo Courtyard.

With football season upon us, so are the football festivities. From tailgating at the game to gathering with friends to watch your favorite team, football games bring us together to eat, drink, and be cheery. While you can’t control how your team plays, you can control the menu for the occasion, ensuring your friends, family, fellow fans, and even those fierce and friendly rivals enjoy good food to go along with their good times!

QUARTERBACK SLIDE SLIDERS

12 Hawaiian rolls

8-10 slices of cheese (Swiss or provolone works best)

4-6 slices of ham

½ cup melted butter and garlic

3 Tbs. honey

Salt and pepper, to taste

Dijon mustard (optional)

Preheat your oven to 350°F. In a bowl, combine ½ cup garlic butter with 3 tablespoons honey. Mix well. Slice a 12-pack of Hawaiian rolls in half, separate and put bottom halves in casserole dish. Spread the honey garlic butter mixture on the rolls. Top the bottom half of the rolls with 8-10 slices of cheese. Then top with 4-6 slices of ham. Place the top half of the rolls back over the bottom layer, then evenly brush more of the honey-garlic butter mixture over the top. Season the top of the rolls with salt and pepper to taste. Bake for 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted.

SPECIAL TEAMS SAUSAGE DIP

2 Tbs. olive oil

12 oz. ground beef

8 oz. Spanish chorizo, finely chopped

2 lbs. Velveeta cheese, cubed

2 (14 oz.) cans diced tomatoes with green chiles

½ tsp. crushed red pepper

Tortilla scoops, for serving

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high. Add beef and chorizo; cook, stirring often to crumble beef, until browned, then drain. Add meats to a 6-quart slow cooker; stir in cheese, tomatoes and chiles, and crushed red pepper. Cover and cook on HIGH, stirring occasionally, until cheese is fully melted and sauce is smooth, about 1 hour. Turn slow cooker to warm; serve with tortilla scoops.

BUFFALO BLITZ CHICKEN DIP

1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese, softened

8 oz. mozzarella cheese

½ cup refrigerated bottled ranch or blue cheese dressing

½ cup hot sauce

¾ tsp. black pepper

½ tsp. garlic powder

4 cups chopped cooked chicken

3 oz. blue cheese, crumbled (about ¾ cup) Carrot sticks, celery sticks, and/or pretzel chips, for serving

Preheat oven to 350°F. Spread cream cheese on bottom of 13x9 pan. Mix half of the mozzarella cheese, dressing, hot sauce, pepper, and garlic powder in a large bowl until well blended. Gently fold in chicken and half of the scallions. Spread mixture over cream cheese. Top with the remaining mozzarella cheese. Bake in preheated oven until center is hot and edges are bubbly, 20 to 25 minutes. Remove from oven, and top with remaining scallions. Serve with carrots, celery, crackers, or pretzel chips.

MIGHTY O-LINE MEATBALLS

1 ½ cups Smucker’s® grape jelly

1 cup Heinz® chili sauce

½ cup barbecue sauce

1 tsp. Dijon mustard

1 tsp. Sriracha chili sauce

½ tsp. kosher salt

¼ tsp. black pepper

Cooking spray

2 lbs. frozen meatballs

(or homemade, if you have the time)

2 Tbs. finely chopped chives

Whisk together grape jelly, chili sauce, barbecue sauce, mustard, Sriracha, salt, and pepper in a medium bowl. Lightly coat slow cooker with cooking spray. Place frozen meatballs in slow cooker. Pour jelly sauce over meatballs, toss to coat. Cover and cook on HIGH until sauce is thickened, 2 to 2 ½ hours, stirring halfway through. Top with chives and serve.

CORNERBACK SEA SALT & CARAMEL POPCORN

½ cup popcorn kernels, popped

1 cup salted butter

1 cup light brown sugar

1/3 cup light corn syrup

1 ½ - 2 tsp. sea salt, divided

Preheat the oven to 300°F. Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Pour the popped popcorn into a large serving bowl. In a small saucepan melt together the butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, and 1 teaspoon of the salt over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a boil. Boil for 4 minutes without stirring. Pour the caramel mixture over the popcorn and toss the popcorn to coat it evenly. Pour the popcorn into the lined pan, sprinkle the remaining salt on top (½ to 1 teaspoon, depending on your personal taste preference), and place the pan in the oven. Bake for 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes. Allow the popcorn to cool on a parchment paper-lined counter.

31st Annual Emerald Coast National Juried Exhibition

Mattie Kelly Arts Center at Northwest Florida State College hosted the 31st Annual Emerald Coast National Juried Art Exhibition on August 31. Home to the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, the center hosts artists and touring groups while housing the Humanities, Fine, and Performing Arts Division of the college.

When the doors opened at 6:00pm, guests were welcomed with music, food, and drinks. The gallery pieces ranged from video to photos to clothing and ceramics. Shortly after opening the doors, J. Wren Supak, Director and Curator for the Center, opened the exhibition by thanking everyone for their support of the arts and stating the purpose of the exhibition. “With the Emerald Coast National we endeavor to create opportunities for artists that serve our mission as educators.” She continued, “this year’s Emerald Coast National includes the work of 21 artists from 18 states and three foreign countries.” Guest juried by Dr. Maria Elena Buszek, Professor, University of Colorado, the exhibition included several pieces from area artists, however, first place went to “Charmed”, a sculpture from Dana Donaty of Boynton Beach, FL.

Inaugural Bring Hope Dragon Boat Festival & Race

In the Panhandle, Okaloosa County’s age-adjusted rate shows the county is one of the state’s leaders in death by suicide. On September 10, the Inaugural Bring Hope Dragon Boat Festival & Race was held at The Gulf on Okaloosa Island to raise funds for the HOPE SQUAD Suicide Prevention Program in area schools and military installations. “This is our Inaugural Bring Hope Dragon Boat Race to raise money for our HOPE SQUADS across the Panhandle,” said Kathy Houchins, Vice Chair, United For A Good Cause, Inc. “We are in all the schools from Escambia to Walton and are on the move to Bay County so, this is a big fundraiser for us.” Open to the public, team supporters visited the many tents while race participants readied themselves for paddling the 46-foot-long dragon boats. This inaugural event not only raised awareness of the issues but also raised funds for suicide prevention.

Okaloosa Big Scoop

Big Brother Big Sisters of Northwest Florida (BBBSNWF) helps children realize their potential and build their futures. To do this, BBBSNWF holds events throughout the year to raise funds and recruit volunteers. On September 9, Emerald Coast HarleyDavidson was the host for Okaloosa Big Scoop and hundreds of people came to eat ice cream and participate in all the event’s activities.

“This is our 3rd annual Big Scoop for Okaloosa County and the second year in-a-row that we’ve partnered with Emerald Coast Harley-Davidson,” said Rique Gwin, Advisory Board Chair, Okaloosa/Walton County. He continued, “our main focus today is to increase community awareness of our programs so that children that are needing mentorship can find the needed resources to get involved. The other large need that we have is for adults who are willing to be Bigs in our mentorship program.”

In addition to the all-you-could eat ice cream, the event featured food, refreshments and tent displays ranging from Ascension Sacred Heart to the Destin-Fort Walton Little Adventures. And for those that dropped their name in the hat, a drawing was held for a 2023 Ultra Limited motorcycle.

The Emerald Coast Big Game Fishing Club (ECBGFC) is a modernized social fishing club, originating in Destin, Florida where “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” will retain its roots. I am the Founder and Director of the Club. I was born and raised in Louisiana and am now a Florida resident who is passionate about anything fishing. I’m an accomplished mother to 12-year-old Cardyn and a savvy businesswoman who has experience running marinas, tackle shops, tournaments and events, boat provisions, and I love to fish!

How did the organization come about?

I had a dream for many years of starting a fishing club. With a notebook full of ideas, the timing was finally right. After moving to Destin, the community was so welcoming

and there was a need for a club like this one in the area, so in January 2022, I launched ECBGFC and it took off from there. I have an incredible team that helps make everything happen. As we rolled into the second year in 2023, we started a new chapter in Panama City Beach.

What impact has your organization had on the community?

ECBGFC is all about community, conservation, and giving back! We have incorporated ECBGFC with Destin High School and their accredited Fishing Class and Fishing Club to help educate students and fund efforts. We’ve also launched the Destin for Success Scholarship Program awarding scholarships to students of Okaloosa, Walton, and Bay counties.

What impact has your organization had on conservation?

Billfish conservation is so important, and we are the only tournaments to be Catch & Release only for the billfish division and we’ve created an equal point system to take the pressure off of blue marlin. We are working on other ways to assist and support conservation of not only billfish, but other species of fish and the ocean.

What are some challenges ECBGFC faces?

Some challenges we face as an organization is funding projects. We depend heavily on sponsors and the generosity of the community to be able to give back. Spreading the word about the club has been a challenge, but as time goes by, more and more people are finding out about us and wanting to be a part of what we do.

What are some future goals for your organization?

We want to be the largest fishing club spreading across the Gulf Coast. Our future goals are to continue expanding to surrounding areas and continuing to grow and host the best events. ECBGFC currently has over 330 active members.

What are some events that your organization hosts?

Both chapters host several events throughout the year. Official dates for 2024 will be announced soon, unless otherwise listed.

Destin Chapter: Regular Club Meetings, Inshore Tournament, Billfish Extravaganza (May 2-5, 2024), Youth Tournament (July 26-28, 2024), Hit the Gulf Tournament, Destin for Success Fundraising Event, and the Sportsman’s Ball (September 14, 2024).

Panama City Beach Chapter: Regular Club Meetings, Tight Lines PCB Tournament, Salty Catch Fishing Rodeo, and the Hit the Gulf Tournament.

We conclude the year with the Sportsman’s Ball - a spectacular night to remember with dinner, drinks, and dancing, along with awarding Top Teams & Anglers, scholarships to students of Okaloosa, Walton, and Bay counties, give back to Destin High School Fishing Club & Class, and recognize our wonderful sponsors

followed by live entertainment. We call it the Mardi Gras Ball of Sportfishing!

Whether you have a boat and fish, or not, and just want to be a part of a fun community organization, we invite everyone to join the Emerald Coast Big Game Fishing Club. The importance of our Youth • Growth & Giving Back

As we all know, the future of anything, whether it’s fishing, sports, or whatever it may be, is dependent on our youth involvement. We strive to encourage our youth to participate, learn, and grow to the best of their ability. Moving forward into 2024, ECBGFC is working to come up with different programs to give back to our youth. Everything dies if we don’t teach it.

Burgers, Bourbon & Beer Festival

Benefitting the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast, the 3rd Annual Burgers, Bourbon & Beer Festival was held on September 23 on the Destin Harbor at Brotula’s Seafood House & Steamer. With gourmet burgers, craft beers, bourbons, and live music, tons of people kicked off fall with a pretty tasty festival.

“Every dollar raised today has a 12x multiplier and will make an impact on kids in Okaloosa and Walton Counties,” said Shervin Rassa, CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast (BGCEC). While BGCEC offers a safe place to play, grow and learn, the data shows that kids and teens who attend Boys & Girls Clubs perform better academically and are more likely to avoid risky behaviors and attend school consistently. For example, in 2022-2023, BGCEC graduated 100% of its seniors while Escambia, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa and Walton schools graduated 78.4%, 87.5%, 77.2% and 96.7% respectively.

Aside from the benefits festivals like this bring to local organizations, the fun and tasty treats bring people in droves. In addition to the gourmet burgers and adult beverages, a silent auction with prizes ranging from BOTE gear to Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation tickets was held.

Since 1984, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Florida (RMHCNF) has served nearly 30,000 families. With a mission to love and support families of children with medical needs by giving them a place to call home, RMHCNF hosts or participates in community events ranging from CPR & First Aid classes to sportsmen’s banquets. Additionally, there are signature events such as the Firecracker 5k and Wine & Fries. On September 22, Hotel Effie in Sandestin hosted the annual Wine & Fries fundraising event.

“This is our 5th annual Wine & Fries and we are thrilled to be at Hotel Effie,” said Summer Jimmerson, President / CEO, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Florida. “Even though the house is in Pensacola, 40% of the families that stay with us are from the Okaloosa and Walton County area. To have the support from the local community means the world to us.”

What is your hometown?

I am originally from the Bronx, NY, and since 1979, my parents and I vacationed down here at the Emerald Coast and we all fell in love. I loved the area so much I made it my permanent home in 1992, and my parents followed the next year.

What is your profession?

My mom opened Destin Floral in 1993 and that led to my profession as the Owner/Head Designer at Destin Floral Designs. A chef by trade, floral arranging was a logical extension for my creative side so I came aboard in 1999.

What are some of your favorite things about Destin?

As a resident for over 30 years now, I’ve seen Destin grow and change but the one thing that never changes is the tight-knit local community. I’m fortunate to have known my customers for so long that I consider them friends.

Three words that best describe you. Kind, Creative, Integrity.

Favorite places in Destin?

From the many gorgeous beaches to the plethora of restaurants from any cuisine one’s palate could desire, I couldn’t pick a favorite if I tried. Regardless of what you decide to do, it’s impossible to have a bad day in Destin.

What is one thing that you do not go a day without?

I can’t go one day without giving back in some way. My true fulfillment is seeing others happy or helping them in some way, from the smallest act of kindness to one of our locals in need or delivering flowers to some lucky loved one. Their happiness is mine.
