tep One Automotive Group in Fort Walton Beach held the Jeep Meet N’ Greet Gladiator Release Party on July 20. It was a beautiful sunny day with people excited to see the new Gladiator, and climb into one for the first time. With over 300 people in attendance and selling 3 new Gladiators during the event alone, the event was certainly a success. All proceeds went to The Air Commando Association, which was the event charity partner. Co-host Destin Jeep Brigade also helped out and handled the 50/50 raffle for the club. The event also featured vendor charity raffles, food, and family friendly fun, including Epic Photobooth and Epic Elegant Entertainment DJ. There were prizes like a weekend with Gladiator and dinner, a car upgrade basket, beach day basket, “spin the wheel” Jeep swag, hats, stickers and more. Meg Pettis added a special thank you to Destin Jeep Brigade and The Air Commando Association (ACA). The ACA’s mission is to “serve Air Commandos and their families, past and present, and future by educating and advocating to fill the unmet needs of Air Commandos and families.”

ixty guests arrived at Jim and Tammy Pierce’s impressive Sandestin home recently to enjoy a rare experience. The Pierces hosted a star-studded celebrity wine dinner for charity featuring iconic Academy-award winning actor Morgan Freeman, and American celebrity chef, restaurateur and author, Emeril Lagasse. Attending couples raised their paddles high to bid on the dinner this past spring at the 13th Annual Chi Chi Miguel Throwdown, which raised over $1 million to benefit eight Gulf Coast charities. The Freeman/Lagasse dinner alone raised an impressive $100,000 that directly benefited the Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center (ECCAC). The Chi Chi Miguel Throwdown was founded by Mike and Val Thompson and is now orchestrated by the Emeril Lagasse Foundation every year. “It was our pleasure to host this memorable dinner with our community being able to take part,” commented hostess Tammy Pierce, who is also the immediate past board president of ECCAC. “But more importantly, more impacted children can benefit from ECCAC because of the great support of events such as Chi Chi.” ECCAC’s mission is to prevent child abuse and neglect, protect children in Okaloosa and Walton Counties, and restore the lives and futures of these impacted children. Their child-friendly centers house a multidisciplinary team of child protection personnel, prosecutors, law enforcement, DCF, therapists, ECCAC staff and volunteers. The 501C-3 non-profit organization has provided services at no cost to over 12,000 children in the past 18 years. For further information, visit www.eccac.org. eter Pan once said, “It is not in doing what you like, but in liking what you do that is the secret to happiness.” Velia Lala is one individual who is lucky enough to do both. It is increasingly rare in today’s world to love your work; but in doing so, you throw open the doors of your life and give way to exciting new opportunities. Velia Lala was born and raised in Louisiana, and over the course of her thirty-year career she has worn many hats. Art was always simmering on low on the back burner for Velia. Dabbling in art during her early twenties by creating ceramic masks, led to experimenting with different art forms at the end of her work days and on weekends. She described, “There was always that innate desire to be able to be creative on a full time basis and at the end of 2010 I just took a leap of faith.” Velia has been shaking up the art world ever since creating abstract to classical castings; each piece a one of a kind uniquely beautiful creation. Velia forms her original and custom works through acrylic, mixed medium, epoxy high gloss, photography and body casting/ bronzing; constantly growing and learning through a wide array of artistic techniques. Her pieces stand out with her use of vibrant colors, unique patterns and interesting textures. It was a natural leap to then delve all in to the world of fashion, with a truly special line of Wearable Art clothing and stand out accessories. Velia is constantly inspired by the world around her and every day she is surprised by what stands out. “I am inspired by music, travel and life’s experiences. I’ve never created an art piece without some genre of music playing in the background or turned up for energy.” Her art work has evolved and you can sometimes decipher what her mood was at the time of creation by studying the piece. Her work began as very minimalistic and has now grown to have a life of its own with very textural canvases of all sizes. She is now inspiring others through her passion by leading art classes. In 2012 she began teaching art classes out of her home, 18
which quickly gathered attention and a following within the local art community and beyond. Shortly after she became a GOLDEN Art Educator and now hosts classes in her Fort Walton Beach Studio. A lot of group art classes teach you how to paint one object or scene, and then the whole room paints the same thing. Those are nice, but Velia’s art classes take you completely out of the box. The whole group learns the same technique, but then your creativity takes over and you are

able to create a beautiful one of a kind work of art. During the “Glitzy Pours” class you work with Epoxy Resin. Another option that’s fun for all ages is the “Corrugated Construction with Resin” class where magic happens when cardboard is transformed into a creation that looks like metal. In the “Layered Techniques” class you learn the concept of pattern and flow by adding layers of papers and embellishments to create a unique masterpiece. The interest in these classes became so great that Velia decided to take the act on the road! She decided to expand the art classes to a mobile structure and bring the joy of art to you. She brings all of the supplies to your home, place of business, restaurant, etc. These classes are sometimes private lessons, a party or a corporate team building event. All you need to supply is your imagination. racken Law, P.A.’s second office location grand opening on 30A was celebrated on June 26 from 5:30-7:30, along with Proffitt PR and Walton Area Chamber of Commerce. The new office is located in Blue Mountain Beach at the Draper J Building right in the heart of the community. This warm evening kicked-off with a ribbon cutting, while guests enjoyed appetizers from Chef Holbrook of Signature Catering of 30A, including arugula veal meatballs, pulled sliders on King’s Hawaiian bread, pecan grouper sliders, spring rolls, and bananas foster. Each guest also enjoyed cold drinks by Idyll Hounds Brewing Company, and live music by Matt Lyons. A rooftop toast overlooking the Gulf made for the perfect evening ending and celebration of this fabulous new office. The first office is in Miramar Beach/Destin area and Bracken Law, P.A. was also the winner of Best in Destin Law Firm. he Emerald Coast’s Premier Medical Spa, Renew Aesthetics & Anti-Aging Clinic, held their grand opening at their Fort Walton Beach location on Brooks St. on June 27. Friends, family members, and the general public attended the event in support of the owners who are on a quest to open a premier anti-aging and medical spa right in the heart of Fort Walton Beach. Those who attended the grand opening enjoyed live music by Ryan Fredrick Stroud, some delicious hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, and a tour of the facility. Generous discounts were also given to all of the patrons who signed up for services at the spa, and to show appreciation to their guests, the staff handed out goodie bags at the end of the event as people left.

T
he 23rd annual Rags 2 Riches Regatta on June 29 almost had to cancel this year due to weather, but the rain held off on Grayton Beach and the sunshine allowed the race to continue with only some slight changes in start time. With registration in the morning followed by the Captain’s meeting, people gathered along the beach with their fresh caught fish, favorite snacks, and drinks. Hosted by Grayton Beer Company, this event was originally organized by the residents of Grayton Beach and Seagrove Beach. It’s the annual tradition and celebration of Independence Day, and a great all day gathering for families and friends. Located just behind the Red Bar at the entrance at Grayton Dunes, two-manned teams navigate 16’ Hobie Cats along the coast of Grayton Beach and Seagrove Beach. The beach was packed with on-lookers soaking up the sunshine as they cheered on the teams. Deemed as some locals’ “favorite event of the year,” it’s a perfect kick-off celebration for the 4th of July.

H
arborWalk Village in Destin does it big with each holiday, and the 4th of July Celebration was no different. The whole week was fi lled with events and bands on the main stage, and July 4th was packed with both out-of-town guests and locals. Free beer samples were passed out right from the stage from 7-9pm, with Eli Hannon and The Manly Hero playing- that got the whole crowd dancing and singing along! Then there were fireworks at 9:00pm, and a fire-spinning show at 9:30pm. Vendors of all kinds lined HarborWalk, along with Lydia Faith of Aerial Events, who was on stilts handing out flags and high-fives in her best 4th of July outfit for entertainment. It was a great family-friendly location, and still more than enough places to stop for the older crowd to enjoy, too. Across the HarborWalk you could see guests enjoying the beach, boating, and kayaking all the way over to Crab Island. Although it was an extremely warm day, it didn’t stop the crowds from cooling off any way they could while still sporting their favorite Independence Day attire.

eeing the sunny yellow hue of the mimosa cocktail, there’s little wonder that this bright, refreshing drink bears the name of a flower of the same name—not to mention the same color. In the same way the flowers themselves seem to light up the branches of the trees from which they burst forth, the drink seems to light up the palate, bursting with the brightness of bubbles that add effervescent appeal to the sweet acidity and tartness of citrus juices. So just where did this ingenious drink originate? Credit the creative drinkers and thinkers of Spain, where oranges and sparkling wines like cava are produced in abundance. After all, when life gives you oranges...add fizzy alcohol? Can’t argue with that! Traditionally speaking, mimosas are most often created using one part champagne or sparkling wine to one part orange juice, though it can be made with the juices of another citrus fruit, like grapefruit. But—especially here in Florida, where we tend to have a thing for oranges—we’re all about the classic, mixing up OJ with our fave champs or sparkling wines to create the perfect way to start the day (did someone say “brunch?”), celebrate the blessed union of two souls, or indulge during our time in first-class (or, for those of us in coach, pretending we’re in first class…). But who says you can’t have a mimosa any time? With so much vitamin C, the case can be made for the mimosa as a healthy drink, don’t you think? And who doesn’t love being healthy? It’s also an extremely simple recipe, as it literally takes only two ingredients to make. One part to one part, though some recipes call for the ratio to skew more on the side of adding more alcohol, depending on the desired level of sweetness—not that we have a problem with that. It’s all about your personal preference. What makes it seem so special is, of course, the celebratory feel of the champagne or sparkling wine and the champagne flute that the drink is traditionally served in. One of the great things about this fizzy drink is the fact that—aside from being almost idiot-proof— it can be made relatively inexpensively, and no one will be the wiser. Because you’re mixing your ingredients, it doesn’t require the use of premium quality champagne or sparkling wine, which means you can save your pennies and still come out looking like quite the cocktail genius. There is, however, something to be said for not going too cheap, as those bargain-basement bubblies will bring you nothing but headaches later on (literally). It’s important to start with cold ingredients and keep them chilled until you’re ready to make the drink. And that champagne flute isn’t just because we want to be all fancy—it actually serves a purpose, as the tall design of the glass helps retain bubbles. If you don’t have a flute, use a wine glass. Not quite as effective, but still good. Method is important here, as well. Unless you like having overflow, pour the sparkling wine into the glass first, then follow it with the juice. It’s also key to make like a beermeister and hold the glass at a slight tilt as you pour the wine, which will preserve those bright little bubbles we all love so much. Whether you’re a bruncher or an equal-opportunity sipper, mimosas have a way of brightening and lightening any occasion. So raise a glass to OJ (and champagne) all day!

t was another exciting and successful weekend at the 17th annual Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic Fishing Tournament. The final weigh in, which was on June 23 at Baytowne Marina, brought in some determined and skilled teams to show-off their big catches. For 2019, there were over 28 sponsors, 80 boats, and $1.8 million in cash awards. A new record by a single team was also broken by boat “It Just Takes Time,” coming in with a Blue Marlin weighing 574 pounds. The monstrosity which was snagged by angler Nick Pratt fetched the team a whopping $596,025.00 in cash. Other cash prizes and trophies were awarded to participating teams for different disciplines including Top Release Teams, Top Crew, Top Dolphin, Top Tuna, Top Wahoo, and Top Lady Angler amongst others. Every year after the fun, awards, and trophies, the Blue Marlin Classic doesn’t just shut its doors until the next year- they also give to the community. They support Sandestin Foundation for Kids, Harvest House Food Bank, Hosanna House for abused women, The Billfish Foundation, and Florida Deptartment of Environmental Protection Clean Marina Program. Officially sanctioned by the World Billfish Series and a qualifying event for the IGFA World Championship Circuit, the ECBC attracts anglers of all skill levels for their tournaments.

he 2019 Northwest Florida Ballet at Twilight took place on June 22, at Grand Boulevard Sandestin. This annual free community performance, and final performance of the season, was a mix of classic and modern works. Starting at 7:30pm, this popular outdoor event invited all to bring a chair and beach blanket, and enjoy the production of Northwest Florida Ballet (NFB) dancers and international guests artists. Artistic Director and CEO of NFB Todd Allen, and Community School Director and Assistant Director Sharon Allen, added how grateful they were for this evening. They loved being part of the community and are excited for next year’s 50th anniversary season. Ballet at Twilight is a part of Grand Boulevard’s Coastal Culture series made possible by Grand Boulevard Arts & Entertainment program. The 2018-2019 season was presented by St. Joe Community Foundation. NFB is sponsored in part by the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. This Thursday get together had La Cocina packed with people trying to cool off indoors with a handcrafted margarita, and ready to win a door prize while catching up with members and tons of new faces in town. he Children of Destin and the surrounding areas had a fun-fi lled evening at the Family Independence Day Celebration, which was held at the Morgan Sports Center in Destin on July 2. The annual City of Destin Independence Bike Parade is put on each year by Destin Parks and Recreation. The team worked tirelessly to make this a special event for families in the area to enjoy on their 4th of July celebration. The Parks & Recreation Director, Lisa Firth, and Ms. Destin Brooke O‘Keefe were on the sidelines cheering the young bikers on as they pedaled their way around the track. Ms. Firth also said the event was put on for the kids to enjoy and celebrate July 4th in their own way, and she hoped this event will be a continuous running one each year, since they had a hiatus the last couple of years. She added, “The kids have so much fun, I just love seeing them so happy.”

hat a fun evening it was at The Summer Jam 2019, which took place at the Emerald Coast Convention Center on July 13. Patrons danced the night away to some great music by The Mulligans to help celebrate the Emerald Coast Autism Center’s ten year anniversary. The Director & Co- founder Staci Berryman thanked all of their sponsors and families for their support and help over the years to make ECAC a success. She also gave a brief history of the center, and gave her guests an inside look at the day to day activities, how the students at the center benefit from what they offer there, and how much the staff members give to make sure the children at ECAC have the best care when they are there. The Emerald Coast Autism Center (ECAC) is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to educating and improving the lives of young children with autism in Okaloosa and Walton counties and surrounding areas. ECAC is unique in their approach to teaching these amazing children. All instruction and activities at the ECAC are conducted in a manner consistent with the science of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). The science of ABA is currently the only proven intervention for children with autism. Specifically, ECAC follows the Verbal Behavior (VB) approach to ABA, based on B.F. Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior.

erving out the simply stated but exceptionally difficult mission of “Following the example of Christ by embracing all God’s children … one child, one family at a time,” the United Methodist Children’s Home provides homes, hope, and healing in Northwest FL to families, children, and youth impacted by abuse and neglect. Agency-wide services include foster care (traditional and therapeutic), adoption services, teen center, residential homes, transitional living services, family preservation and reunification, and higher education scholarship programs. Homes for children and youth in need are provided through their foster care program and teen group home. Their family preservation program provides targeted, specific interventions for families who are at risk for having children removed as well as with families working toward reunifying with their children. Their Teen Center provides

mentoring and educational support services for youth impacted by the foster care system. Children served range from ages 0-21. Referrals are received from the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) and Families First Network (FFN). UMCH is licensed through DCF, contracted through FFN, and serves an average of 125-150 individuals at any given time in Northwest FL. Their programs span 36 counties in Alabama and four in Northwest FL. The NWFL ministry currently has program offices and staff serving children and families in Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, and Walton Counties. Exec Director, United Methodist Children’s Home - NWFL Ministry Tell us about your role with UMCH.
I joined the UMCH leadership team in April 2018. I was not looking for a job, but trying to refer a qualified candidate for the position. After learning about UMCH’s history, impact, and plans to expand foster care programs in Northwest FL, it became clear to my heart that this was an opportunity for me professionally and personally. I am a former foster parent who adopted my son at the age of two. I know first-hand the challenges and rewards of being a foster parent and have managed non-profits working with vulnerable populations most of my career. What sort of staff does UMCHNWFL have locally?
Our corporate office is located in Montgomery, AL, with administrative offices in both Birmingham and Fort Walton Beach. Locally, a staff of 25 are living and serving Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, and Walton Counties. That number should grow in 2020 due to increased needs in Okaloosa and Walton Counties. To better represent the Northwest FL community, we are in the process of developing a volunteer leadership board from the four county area. Current leadership includes Jerry Maygarden and Kim Stagner (Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties) and Jeff Dannelly, Kirby Williams, and Greg Crouch (Okaloosa and Walton Counties). Volunteers are limited at our program locations due to sensitivity, privacy, and safety issues. We do have many community advocates and supporters in our schools and churches who raise funds, collect necessary donations (for our foster families and our teens), provide tutoring, fellowship and social opportunities. How is UMCHNWFL funded?
Collectively, the state of Florida pays about 60% of what it costs to run the programs, and funding is always shifting and fluctuating. The remainder is from donors and churches from Alabama and Florida. What is the impact of UMCH in our community in the last year?
• 15,121 days of foster care for 116 children and youth from Pensacola to Destin area. • 2,469 days of care for 18 teen girls in foster care at our residential home in Milton. • 389 family members were served (92 families) through our intensive, in-home prevention and reunification treatment in all four counties. • 29 teenagers in foster care received after school and summer care empowerment through our Teen Center in Crestview. What is the most rewarding part of your involvement with the organization?
Realizing the impact on kids when they finally have a safe and loving home, regular meals, and a place to rest. After that initial
realization that they are in a safe place, they began the process of healing and growing. They have structure, learn appropriate expectations and relationships, and live with people who advocate for their needs in every aspect of their lives. It’s life changing for them; not an overnight transformation, but it is amazing to watch the healing and growth unfold. What challenges does your organization face?
Right now - community awareness beyond community churches. Northwest FL is full of non-profit agencies benefiting children and families. Many of these agencies have designated staff to interact with the community. Because our headquarters and leadership were primarily located in Montgomery, we did not have ongoing and focused community development locally. While we are a vital and trusted agency among our partners and within our industry, the majority of our constituents are members of the United Methodist Church. We have been very blessed to receive consistent and ongoing support from churches in the Alabama West Florida Conference, but we need to reach and engage the greater community. Not just to impact funding and awareness, but to recruit more foster families, and support foster families. What is one thing you want readers to know about UMCHNWFL?
We are laser focused on healing children who are victims of choices made by adults in their lives. Many have endured unthinkable childhoods, through no fault of their own. Recently, I spoke to a bible school class when one young boy asked me “… aren’t foster kids bad?” That broke my heart as I explained they are not bad kids, but that they had bad things happen to them. They need our love and support to ensure they have what every child deserves; a home, and hope. Whether it’s working with that child’s parents to encourage reunification, or preparing a teenager for the world without a family when they “age out” of the system, every aspect of that child’s healing and growth is the reason we exist. We depend on donors to fill the gap not covered by state funding and for extracurricular activities necessary to encourage social, educational, physical, and spiritual growth. eelin’ “Mardi Gras festive” but realize that holiday already came and went? Not on Tuesday’s at the HarborWalk Village! Every Tuesday until August 13, from 6:30pm-9pm visitors and locals of Destin party like they’re living it up on Bourbon Street itself. For the months of summer, the HarborWalk Village transforms into “The Big Easy” and entices people of all ages to come out. Looking to add to your bead collection? Here’s the place to do so. The night began with music from Fais Do Do, which took place at the big stage. People either brought their own chairs, grabbed a seat in front of the stage or danced their way around the walkways as they checked out all the other attractions & stores. Other attractions of the night consisted of stilt walkers, who made balloon animals, face painting and the opportunity to hold exotic birds. As the parade began, people lined up along both sides of the HarborWalk walkways in preparation for the colorful floats, dazzling costumes, and street performers. Float riders tossed out beads and swag to all the guests along the side of the path.

he Destin Chamber’s 6th Annual Great American Cookout was held on July 9 at the Destin Chamber of Commerce, sponsored by Community Bank and Emerald Coast Title Services, and featuring nonprofit partner Fisher House of the Emerald Coast. They cooked up delicious burgers and bacon, hot dogs and sides, for a great networking lunch away from work. Each of the sponsors had a chance to speak along with any new members to the Chamber. With a few door prizes given, the Destin Chamber also reminded every one of the Mega Door Prize drawing; for every Chamber breakfast, lunch, and after hours attended February-December, members will receive an entry toward one of the major prizes, where they must be present at the 2020 January Business After Hours to win. Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation Receives Single Largest Donation in Foundation History from The Jumonville Family
Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation (DCWAF) is excited to announce that it has received the largest single donation in DCWAF’s 15-year history. The gift was made by Ryan D. “Jume” Jumonville and his wife Raven who live in the Destin area with their four young children. “This financial commitment by Mr. Jumonville will positively impact the lives of hundreds of children,” said John Russell, president of DCWAF. “We have never received a gift of this magnitude and we are so very grateful to be chosen as the recipient of such magnanimous support of our mission to help the children of Northwest Florida.” Originally from Louisiana, Jumonville started his first company at age 24. Among other business ventures, he is currently the chairman of United Networks of America, which provides products and services that reduce healthcare costs for clients such as insurance companies, governments, associations, organizations, large employers and more. Jumonville’s generous donation to DCWAF comes on the heels of his announcement of joining The Giving Pledge, a philanthropic organization founded by Bill and Melinda Gates and comprised of the world’s wealthiest individuals and families that have pledged to dedicate the majority of their wealth to giving back. The organization currently has 204 members. With his pledge, Jumonville joins the ranks of Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Richard Branson, MacKenzie Bezos, David Rockefeller, and many more. A portion of Jumonville’s gift will be distributed to DCWAF’s 16 benefiting local children’s charities on September 4 at the Henderson Beach Resort during their annual check presentation ceremony. The remainder of his gift will be invested into the newly renamed Jumonville Family Children’s Fund to solidify the sustainability of the organization and the charities it supports into the future. The 15th Annual Destin Charity Wine is scheduled for April 24-26, 2020 in Grand Boulevard. Patron packages will go on sale in November. 62
The Market Shops to Celebrates Six-Year Anniversary with the Walton Area Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours The Market Shops, located at the entrance to Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, will host the Walton Area Chamber of Commerce for their Business After Hours event on Thursday, September 19, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in celebration of the six-year anniversary of the shopping center. The community is invited to explore The Market Shops outdoor shopping center while enjoying live music by Boukou Groove, as well as light bites and complimentary refreshments from The Market Shops merchants. Those attending will receive a punch card with a map of the lifestyle center outlining specific merchants to visit throughout the night. Guests will receive a stamp from each shop they visit on their pass card. Once the fully stamped card is returned to the check-in table, it will be entered in to the grand prize drawing featuring gift cards, baskets, special merchant products, and more provided by the merchants and participating Chamber members. In conjunction with the Walton Area Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours, guests are also invited to celebrate the six-year anniversary of The Market Shops. The property underwent a major renovation at the beginning of 2014, which included significant exterior repair, courtyard and walkway redesign, as well as cosmetic enhancements such as landscaping. The lawn on the east side of the property has also been expanded and refreshed to host festivals, concerts and other special events, such as The Market Shops Bloody Mary Festival and Free Fitness on the Lawn every summer. The anniversary marks six years since the revamped and redesigned Market Shops opened to the public. This was the first renovation The Market Shops received since being built in 1985. Since then, the property has reestablished itself as a community location where locals and visitors alike come to shop, dine and spend time together.
Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation Names Kelly Pierre as 2019 Festival of the Arts Poster Art Contest Winner Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation (MKAF) names popular Destin artist, Kelly Pierre, the 2019 Festival of the Arts poster contest
winner. Born and raised in Southern Louisiana, Kelly Pierre’s passion for arts sparked at a young age. As a child, Pierre spent a lot of his time sketching marine life from the deck of his family’s shrimping boat. He uses multiple mediums, oils, acrylics, clay, wood, and metal because Pierre believes that working with just one media is restrictive to his artistic process and prefers to allow each idea to manifest on its own. Pierre’s studio is located on the Harborwalk Village in Destin where he finds inspiration in the wildlife and beauty of the local Gulf. “People come here from everywhere, they come here for the water and it is what attracts everybody. The beautiful sand and the water. I think the vibe here is awesome and they want to take that home with them,” said Kelly Pierre, 2019 Poster Content Winner, MKAF Festival of the Arts
As the annual poster art contest winner, Pierre receives a cash prize of $500. The winning poster becomes the signature artwork to promote the 24th annual festival poster, postcards, the festival guide, t-shirts, and souvenirs, on the MKAF website, social media pages and more. Festival attendees are invited to view Pierre’s winning art at this year’s Festival of the Arts, where the artwork will be available for purchase. In addition, the art is featured on this year’s official poster, festival t-shirt, and bundled note cards. “Our Festival team takes pride in providing a unique cultural experience for art enthusiasts of all ages. Every year, we welcome back some of our previous year’s award-winning artists and introduce new and seasoned artists to the eclectic mix of a premier fine arts show,” said Deb Nissley, MKAF Festival Producer. Known as one of Northwest Florida’s premier fine arts shows, the MKAF Festival of the Arts is one of the most anticipated cultural events of the year. f you’re looking for something to do on any given Saturday this summer, head over to HarborWalk Village at the Emerald Grande for a live concert. Some of the past bands have been Flash Flood and Tyler Livingston, but the band we got to rock out to on June 22 was The Good Lookings. All concerts are Saturday evenings from 7:00pm to 9:30pm, and the bands are always different! Most songs had guests not only singing along, but dancing with their family and friends as they either walked around the Harbor, or as they watched the concert. Other attractions of HarborWalk Village were available, like face painting, glass blowing demonstrations, caricatures, and an exotic bird experience. The best part about the whole experience is with places like Jackacudas and Margaritaville so close, you’re able to experience dinner and still hear the music. Even if you’ve already eaten, dessert can be accomplished with help from Kona Ice or The Fudgery. n July 10, the Walton Area Chamber held another amazing Power of Networking Luncheon at Food for Thought’s Full Circle Kitchen in Santa Rosa Beach. The event was sponsored by Emmanuel Sheppard & Condon. Before the event started, guests had the opportunity to tour the Food For Thought kitchen, and mingle with Chamber members. For the seated business activity, they played the Chamber version of “Family Feud.” Ms. Gabrielle Kilgore, Community and Special Event Manager at Walton Area Chamber of Commerce explained, “Because we really are a family here.” Each table voted one player to represent them. After three rounds, Joe Capers of Insurance Zone brought home the win and received $100 in Chamber Bucks. The Walton Area Chamber puts on events like this to foster comradery amongst businesses in the area, and to bring awareness to new businesses in a fun and educational way.

T
he aroma of barbeque mixed with smoke filled the air around Destin Commons on July 3, when 18 BBQ groups and restaurants competed to be the best smoke team on the coast. The 9th Annual Smoke on the Coast BBQ & Fireworks brought out thousands to sample the deliciously prepared BBQs, and support local charities the event raises funds for, through the Coins for a Cause program which is spearheaded by Destin Commons. This year a total of $88,000 was raised. Guests enjoyed live music by Forrest Williams Band and Heritage, took fun photos at the retro booth by Epic Photo Booth, kids had their faces painted, and much more. At the end of the night, everyone was dazzled by the amazing fireworks display. The BBQ winners were Destin Rotary who came in 1st for the People’s Choice Award, 2nd went to Hub City Smokehouse/Habitat for Humanity, and 3rd went to Brightview Landscaping/Taylor Haugen Foundation. The judges pick was Smokin Hot Wheels BBQ/Niceville Rotary Club for 1st place, 2nd went to Café Rico/Dog Harmony, and 3rd was Cold Creek BBQ/ Heritage Museum. The Spirit award went to The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast with 1st place, and Destin Rotary and Gulf Coast Council Boys Scouts of America coming in at 2nd and 3rd respectively.

What is your hometown, what brought you here to the Emerald Coast? West Point, Georgia, is my hometown. I started coming here as a child with my family for vacations. That’s when I knew I wanted to settle here because it felt like home. What led you to choose your profession? My choice to be an aesthetician came from growing up in the beauty industry, and competing in modeling and beauty pageants. It took me to amazing places and led me to meet inspiring people at an early age. At 15, after winning runway and photography in New York, I interviewed with John Casablanca of Elite Modeling Agency and was planning to return to New York at 18 to work for his agency in runway. After much thought, I knew my passion was directed more towards teaching others about skincare and make up, not to mention, the city life was just not for me, so I decided to return to Destin where I have made my “home.” Choose three words that best describe you. Vivacious. Passionate. Loving. What is your favorite thing about Destin? Destin has the most beautiful beaches and white sand in the world in my opinion, as well as amazing talent- from musicians, to artist, entrepreneur’s and some of the best local businesses and restaurants that bring so many people from all over the world to enjoy!
