letter from the Associate Publisher
If Izzy could write, she would welcome you to our May issue featuring Pets and People. Let’s face facts, I am the mother of a tiny, beautiful, rescued Pomeranian that controls my life, and I say things like “if Izzy could write.” I always thought of myself as a bigger dog person and was amused at people who carried little foo-foo dogs in handbags. I am now the woman with the foo-foo dog in a purse catering to 5 lbs. of fluff night and day. She has clothes, a car seat, and so many beds around the house that you cannot run the vacuum. She demands attention, barks all the time, threatens to bite anyone who comes near me, and creates havoc in general. When all speak true, most of us are on the same crazy path of furball destruction. We are in love with soft, gentle eyes and wrapped around furry little paws. The care for our fur babies dictates our day-to-day activities, work schedules, vacation schedules, and even our relationships. Izzy knows you will enjoy reading VIP Pensacola Magazine this month. You will fl ip through pet-oriented pages and read about K9 Police dogs. Coastal Cuisine spotlights places in Pensacola where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner with the confidence that they will welcome your best buddy with a cool bowl of water. I think after you read Style and see all those accessories, you will be on the phone ordering one of those cute little bathrobe sets. I hope you will take the time to make a donation or decide to adopt a pet after seeing the many non-profit organizations in May We Suggest. It might seem as if we forgot about the “people” part of this issue when in reality, you will see page after page of people attending events—the Operazzi Ball, Evening in White, and Into the Blue Gala to name only a few. We had our first cover reveal party in over a year at Scenic Hills Country Club which is recapped in this issue, and featured in I Am Pensacola is the always fabulous Shelley Black. Izzy thanks you for reading this issue, and I thank YOU for supporting VIP Pensacola; please be kind, courteous, and shop local.

O
n April 17 the Junior League of Pensacola celebrated its 5th Annual Evening In White. To preserve spontaneity and secrecy, this tres chic picnic tradition (started in Paris, France) takes place at a mystery location in Pensacola. The secret was revealed at the very last minute possible, as it is every year. This year’s event was held at the SCI building, and everyone was encouraged to dress in your most dapper, white attire. Keeping in tradition, and to leave no “tres” behind, all groups brought their own food, décor, and a few even brought lavish table settings. It was truly a magical evening. Since 1956 the Junior League of Pensacola, one of hundreds across the world, has been a driving force behind many initiatives and institutions that make this community a greater place to live. Members are dedicated to volunteerism and making a difference in the lives of many others. Junior League members are active in numerous community initiatives that improve the lives of women, children, and families throughout the Gulf Coast. Above all else, the goal is to promote and perpetuate social change in the Pensacola communities that will benefit most from it. By empowering women and providing valuable leadership training, they give women the tools to get involved, put their talents to work, and positively impact the lives of many in this area.

OPERAZZI BALL
OPERA ON THE HIGH SEAS photos & story by Kristina Wright
P
ensacola Opera proudly presented their premiere fundraising event of the year, Operazzi Ball: Opera on the High Seas. Themed after the most recent production of H.M.S. Pinafore, the Operazzi Ball was held at the Sanders Beach Community Center on Friday, April 16. This black-tie affair included a sit-down dinner provided by Executive Chef Gus Silivos, music by Mr. Big & the Rhythm Sisters, and a special performance from this year’s Artists in Residence. This evening also included live and silent auctions, featuring unique items and experiences from local members in the community and area businesses. All proceeds benefited Pensacola Opera’s mission to enrich the culture of Northwest Florida by producing professional opera performances, educational programs, and other opera-related community events for people of all ages, interests, and backgrounds. Pensacola Opera’s Artists in Residence program, now in its eighteenth season, continues to provide training and performance experience for young opera professionals. In residence from September through March, these artists perform comprimario roles and cover principal roles in the mainstage productions, sing for numerous educational and community outreach programs, and present an annual showcase at the Pensacola Opera Center. In addition to numerous performance opportunities, Artists in Residence also receive regular musical coaching from Pensacola Opera’s music staff, as well as guest coaches and voice teachers, who work to prepare these artists for a successful professional career.

Fido Friendly Fare
O
story by Anna Stockton
kay,I’ll be the first to admit it, I never thought I’d be one of “those people”, you know the kind -- the ones who bring their dog everywhere. Yet here I am -- whether it’s car line, meeting friends for dinner, or even picking up groceries -- Johnny’s usually along for the ride, sitting perfectly straight between kids, his perfectly coifed poodle ‘do giving the appearance of an elderly lady enjoying the scenery on a slow Sunday drive. With more pet owners bringing their pups along, many local businesses, especially these restaurants, are happy to accommodate and welcome their four-legged customers.

Jaco’s..
As a staple of downtown Pensacola, Jaco’s offers both great food and a great atmosphere. Their pet-friendly patio overlooks the Palafox Pier Marina and boasts some truly amazing views. The staff is more than welcoming to well behaved pooches and ensures the pups have fresh water while their human customers enjoy their fabulous meal and atmosphere.
Ruby Slipper Café..
Not far from Jaco’s is the Ruby Slipper Café, the go-to breakfast/brunch restaurant in downtown Pensacola. With waffles and omelets and mimosas, OH MY, it’s the perfect place to spend a leisurely morning with friends. But don’t forget your pup as Ruby Slipper has a dog friendly patio perfect for people and pup watching.
Polonza Bistro..
Also along Palafox is Polonza Bistro, that takes their name from what the Spanish called Escambia Bay. This fun and funky bistro offers coffee, cocktails, comfort food and a place for your canine. The shady outdoor tables welcome you to sit and sip on a coffee or cocktail and have your pup by your side.
Scenic 90 Café.. Along the Scenic Highway in Pensacola, is the pet-friendly throwback Scenic 90 Café. This old-school café offers breakfast, lunch and dinner with the motto “Excellent Food and Snappy Service”. The covered outdoor dining area is perfect for your pet to enjoy the experience with you, even on those hot summer days. Your pup is treated like royalty with fresh water and might even be given a…. T-R-E-A-T….shhhhhh. Gary’s Brewery and Biergarten..
On the west side of Pensacola is Gary’s Brewery and Biergarten. While not a traditional restaurant, Gary’s has light fare and regular food trucks to complement their wide selection of beer and wine. The two and a half acre biergarten is a dog paradise and you will often find families, along with their fur babies enjoying an afternoon drink, games, and fun atmosphere.
Broussard’s Bayou Grille. Another Pensacola pet-friendly favorite, this one with some Cajun flair is Broussard’s Bayou Grille. The outdoor seating areas offers a great place for your pets to enjoy a nice day with their humans while you enjoy a nice Po Boy and other Cajun favorites straight from the Bayou. Flora-Bama Yacht Club..
Along the Intercoastal in Perdido Key is the Flora-Bama Yacht Club. The waterfront restaurant is considered to be one of the most dog-friendly in the area, with doting servers and even a doggie swim area. The fun, beach vibe and great food will have the humans enjoying the experience as well.
Crabs.. This Pensacola Beach mainstay sits with a beautiful view right on the Gulf. It also boasts an entire pet friendly outdoor seating area and tiki bar, now how’s that for an afternoon at the beach? While Crabs specializes in seafood, they have something for everyone, including a pup friendly staff that ensures everyone enjoys the beachy vibes. Water Pig BBQ..
You won’t be able to miss this next pup-friendly restaurant in Pensacola Beach, maybe because of the view -- or maybe because they have a submarine pig on their sign. Either way, the outdoor seating has plenty of space for you and your pup and the food will have you coming back for more.

he First Tee Gulf Coast hosted its 4th Annual Golf Ball Gala at the Court of De Luna courtyard on Friday, April 9. Again, this sold-out event brought in a swinging crowd of over 110 golfers, many wearing their sharpest ever Caddyshack-style attire. On hand was a live televised showing of the second round of the 2021 Masters Tournament, while the Bay Bridge Band was ramping up everyone’s spirit to some of their amazing sounds. There was an inspired buffet, live and silent auctions, a $5,000 putting contest, and many door prizes. Not to be outdone, there was a Best-Dressed Golfer Contest, some pretty nippy looking ones too, and much more! A very meaningful event, the Gala raises funds to benefit The First Tee Gulf Coast mission and for over two decades they have been committed to “impacting the lives of young kids to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime of new challenges.” By seamlessly integrating the game of golf with a lifetime skills curriculum, they create learning experiences that build inner strength, selfconfidence, and a resilience that kids carry with them in everything they do.

n April 23, five area Chamber of Commerces came together at the old Amtrak station for a groundbreaking and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Monument to Women Veterans. Navy Veteran Michelle Caldwell founded the Monument to Women Veterans in 2011. The City of Pensacola has granted them a 30year lease to restore and remodel the Amtrak depot on Heinberg Street. Attendees enjoyed live music, delicious food, and drinks. Mayor Grover C. Robinson, IV read proclamations and tributes. Michelle Salzman had the honor of presenting a House Resolution declaring the first Veterans Week in Florida. The Amtrak Depot will house a museum and monument to women veterans, static and interactive displays, classrooms and conference spaces, and a gift and coffee shop. The facility will also serve as a state-of-the-art national training center. This will allow veterans to train in construction to help fill areas with a critical labor shortage. The museum and monument site will honor all women, past, present, and future, who served in the United States military and provide unmet critical resources for female veteran care.

he Krewe of SWAT hosted their inaugural “Who’s Your Caddy?” golf tournament at Tiger Point Golf Course on March 26. Madrina Ciano, co-founder of SWAT, says Mark & Madrina Ciano this was her very first time organizing a golf tournament, and her focus was on community involvement. With the guidance of First Tee of Northwest Florida’s Marty Stanovich, Madrina along with overwhelming support from community partners, key sponsors, tee sponsors, golfers, and generous donors, created a top-notch event where everyone felt safe, had fun, and were able to gather in support for the greater good. “I wanted it to be like a big party, with a side of golf, and I think we made exactly that happen with this event,” said Madrina. Key sponsors for the event included Grēnbots Inc., Fred Robbins Performance, Riverside Wealth Advisors, Gulf Power Company, Emory Smith with Inlanta Mortgage, Five Sisters Blues Café, Jan Rosenberg, Cavanaugh Miller, Michael Brower, McCarthy Engineering, Inc., Jerald Henson Automotive, Inc., The Watson Firm, PLLC, Airport Dental, and S&K Boutique. The benefactor for this event was Mr. Robbins Neighborhood, created by Fred and Tia Robbins. Pensacola’s own Quint Studer pledged to match donations for the event up to $20,000, bringing the total amount raised for MRN to $50,500. The 2nd Annual “Who’s Your Caddy?” tournament was announced for March 25, 2022, and the registrations were made available to the public to register and claim their spot for next year. Business Profile
W
hat sets a title company apart from the competition? Why choose one over another? How does a title company distinguish itself from the pack? The answer to all three questions is simple……the people. The people at Pensacola Title Company are dedicated to giving their clients the best service possible. They understand the needs of both the realtors who are busy at all times of the day and of the buyers and sellers who are navigating an unfamiliar process. They understand the value of proactive communication and of giving their clients peace of mind. The team at Pensacola Title Company never forgets that they work for their clients and their satisfaction is of the upmost importance. Kelly and Fahz Moulton have assembled an experienced team that innately understands this, and that focuses on building long-term relationships with clients. Because of that dedication, Pensacola Title is a resource to its clients who need expertise in the market and a connection point for organizations and individuals in the industry.

Best Title Company
Opening their doors in January of 2020, the young company faced adversity almost immediately as the Coronavirus pandemic shut down traditional ways of conducting business. By focusing on technology and a commitment to safely meet the needs of their clients, Pensacola Title was able to grow their business exponentially while continuing to serve those clients with integrity, expediency, and creativity. Nowhere was that creativity needed more than in the aftermath of Hurricane Sally. One week after the storm, with no bridge and dicey roads, they had a closing in Pensacola Beach. They called the buyers, sellers, and realtors and told them not to worry, they would be at the closing … by boat. But as fate would have it, that morning the boat was blocked in Palafox Marina by clean-up efforts, and it looked like the closing would have to be postponed. But it takes a village, and Pensacola Title is part of a great village. A second boat was
procured at the last minute and the closing went off without a hitch for the clients. Located in the heart of downtown at 182 North Palafox Street, Pensacola Title Company is proud to be a part of the city and to contribute to its rich history. History is not just something to look back on, it is also something created with words and actions every day. Pensacola Title was founded with an appreciation of what came before and a desire to build and grow into the future. Their logo is a reflection of that past while their passion and dedication is a reflection of where they are going. They are poised to continue to do what they do best, close real estate transactions and be a dynamic part of the Pensacola community. For new businesses, the first two years are key, through a wild 2020 where they were named “Best in Pensacola” and into 2021, Pensacola Title Company has thrived and looks forward to continuing to build their business.

Posh Pets story by Anna Stockton
Is there anything more adorable than dressing your pet up? I mean, do they love it? Probably not. Do we love to pretend like they do? Absolutely we do! Our pets are becoming an increasingly large part of our lives and the pet accessory business is booming as a result. Here are some trends to keep your pet fashionable as they walk along the runway (or sidewalk). “Sweata Weatha” The only thing cuter than your pet, is your pet in a sweater. Just as we Floridians layer up in one of our four sweaters when the first sign of fall is in the air, so must our pets. Argyle, turtlenecks and cute designs are all the rage to keep your beloved pup warm and snuggly in the crisp 60-degree air. Bathrobe Beauties Let’s be honest, does your pup need a bathrobe? Of course not! Would your pup look adorable in a bathrobe? You bet your bath bomb they will. Although these delightful garments seem a bit unnecessary, they actually do serve a purpose. With the absorbent underside, they dry your pup in a flash and help you avoid wet floors, wet furniture and a wet pup causing chaos in your house. Sun and Fun Accessories With all our outdoor time some pet owners choose to protect their fur babies from the sun using hats and sunglasses. Now this trend is definitely for pets far more well behaved than my own, but if your pampered pooch will stay still long enough, they’ll look adorable sporting a cute hat and some cat eyeglasses. These Boots are Made for Walking As a Gulf Coast resident, storms are a way of life and so are wet yards so this is a trend I can totally get behind! Boots for dogs are a thing and what a wonderful thing they are. Imagine instead of having to wipe down your pup’s paws, you just take off their boots and leave them to dry. Functionality meets fashion. 42

eep Pensacola Beautiful (KPB) hosted their “Clean Your Block” Party at the Dixon School of Arts & Sciences on Saturday, March 27. “Clean Your Block” is a neighborhood beautification initiative, in which volunteers provide cleanup assistance to a focused area within Escambia County. Volunteers removed litter from the neighborhood surrounding the school, and masks were required with sanitization stations were available throughout the event. Scott Raynes, Executive Vice President of Baptist Health Care stated, “Baptist Health Care has been working to help the community for 24 years, and this is just another way to accomplish that.” President and CEO of Innisfree Hotels, Ted Ent also said, “Innisfree is proud to be a community partner along side Baptist Health Care and many others. In committing to the Arts and Sciences, we are making our community a better place to live.” This year’s Clean Your Block Party was the biggest yet. By partnering with Dixon School of Arts & Sciences, Innisfree Hotels, Something Old Salvage, Cox Communications, and Baptist Health Care, the total number of Volunteer hours was 563.15, with over 178 contributors. KPB’s partners were on site to provide linkage to health resources for the community, as well as repair the Dixon School’s fence. DJ services and a free lunch from Water Pig BBQ were provided after the cleanup, while food packages were handed out to drive up attendees. Something Old Salvage reported the total amount of trash from the Dixon Clean Your Block was 1,840 pounds.

Law Enforcement’s Best Friend
A
story by Anna Stockton
s with the beginning of any new concept, the use of police K9’s in the United States was a bit “ruff.” In 1916 a New York City Police Commissioner started the first ever K9 program using 16 dogs with handlers. These dogs were used in basic capacities, and only in certain areas during certain times. If you were a resident of Long Island and were out between the hours of 11pm and 7am, you would likely be tackled and have a police dog sitting on your chest while they waited for their handler to arrive. While they didn’t actually bite the person, I doubt there were people lining up to take early morning shifts at the. (Not) Surprisingly, the number of complaints by citizens, combined with the increased usage of patrol cars made the use of police dogs obsolete for a couple decades. When working dogs proved their worth in the WWII, police agencies gave them another chance and by the 1950’s there was a surge in K9 training programs.

4/29/21 8:04 PM
Police K9s are a huge asset to agencies. Many officers feel that the mere presence of a K9 will influence a peaceful surrender and enhance the safety of the officers and also the public. So how does a pup get chosen to be part of a law enforcement department? There are breeders or agencies they go through to find the new K9 but most agencies are looking for similar traits. Contrary to popular belief, an overly aggressive or non-social dog won’t be considered and lazy or non-motivated pups need not apply. Many K9 handlers will bring other handlers with them to choose their dog to help make a more well-rounded decision. The prospective pups are usually between 1 and 2 years old when they are chosen and can cost the department anywhere from $8,000 to $15,000 depending on how much training the dog has already received. Once the pup has joined the department, the training begins for both K9 and handler. Most training programs last up to 6 months and are followed by regular monthly trainings of 15-30 hours a month. Most K9s are trained to take orders in German or Dutch -- not only for tradition, but to be more effective by not responding to the order “No” or “Stop” by a bad guy. Police K9s are a huge asset to agencies. Many officers feel that the mere presence of a K9 will influence a peaceful surrender and enhances the safety of the officers and also the public. Pensacola Police Department K9 Officer Melissa Harris says “Most people like dogs, so the K9s pique people’s interest in what the police department is doing. The K9s serve as a conduit between the police department and the citizens and can bring about meaningful discourse in regards to community policing.” Like many K9 handlers, Deputy Patrick McGauley feels being a handler is the best job in the department “As a patrol dog handler you usually have some role in the most exciting calls, and it’s a good feeling to find or apprehend someone who we may not have been able to without the dog. Also, I’m a guy who enjoys his peace and quiet. I have a partner who for the most part doesn’t speak a word the entire shift.”
There are many uses for working dogs in the police world. Search and rescue, for one - once these pups pick up a scent, they can be hot on the trail of a missing person. Explosives detection dogs are widely used these days, especially in airports and areas with a high density of people. Human remains dogs, or cadaver dogs can detect remains up to 15 feet underground and almost 100 feet underwater. A new way police are using dogs is electronics detection, these special pups can sniff out anything from thumb drives to tiny microSD cards. Our own Pensacola PD has four patrol K9s, one explosives K9, and one electronics detection dog. One thing most people don’t realize is that these K9’s aren’t all work and no play. They’re pups who love to run and play with their toys, they’re also loving members of the handler’s family. The bond between K9 and handler is like no other. “The bond is what I love the most. There is nothing like it. My K9 goes to work with me and comes home with me. I spend more time with him then I do my own family. I know that no matter what happens, he will always have my back.” Says PPD’s Melissa Harris.

he newly opened Home2 Suites in Gulf Breeze held their ribbon cutting on March 25 at the Pensacola Beach Chamber Breakfast. The morning began with networking and breakfast provided by Home2 Suites. Dave Greenwood, Pensacola Beach’s Water Safety Deputy Chief, was the keynote speaker, and he gave a beach safety briefing. Pam Allen of the Pensacola Beach Woman’s Club accepted an award for Member of the Month for March. The PBWC raised nearly 8k from their St. Patrick’s Tailgate that will benefit Beach Elementary School and Beach Church. After the meeting adjourned everyone gathered at the front of the hotel for the ribbon cutting for Home2 Suites, followed by a meet and greet with the staff of Home2 Suites. The guests were then treated to a spread of cheeses, fruits, and other delicious munchies. Home2 Suites is an ideal place for families on vacation. The rooms are trendy with kitchenettes and available in studio and one-bedroom suites. They also offer a fully equiped business center, fitness facility, pool and inviting outdoor spaces, and are pet friendly!

he Ocean Strike Team hosted Into the Blue Gala at Court of Deluna Event Space. Under the sea was the theme for the blacktie event on April 23. The evening started with an exclusive cocktail hour with friends, complimentary champagne, and amazing hors d’oeuvres including lionfish. The party continued with music, dancing, mermaids, aquamen, silent and live auctions, and heavy hors d’oeuvres. It was a full on party to benefit Ocean Strike Team, a non-profit dedicated to saving our oceans. Ocean Strike Team provides divers a chance to get involved in ocean conservation initiatives through eco-tourism and citizen science projects throughout Florida and the Caribbean. Currently, they are conducting campaigns in the area of Lionfish Removal, Shark Conservation and Surveys, Reef Monitoring, and Coral Reef Restoration. Ocean Strikes’ philosophy is “Wherever the Ocean needs us; we can send in a strike team of divers to help out.”

he Pensacola Symphony Orchestra Guild met at the Pensacola Country Club on April 7. Members came dressed in their favorite era of music for a “Music Through the Ages” program arranged by First Vice President Sooz Cobb. The centerpieces featured artistically designed rotating paper cubes on a music note dowel. The Lighthouse Trio, led by PSOG Treasurer Janet Puskar, played selections from the 17th Century to the Beatles and beyond, while members dined on Caesar salad, chicken marsala over angel hair pasta, and chocolate swirl cheesecake. Lynne Tobin, membership chair, is currently leading a membership drive for new and returning members to join the guild’s monthly $25 luncheon. Meetings are scheduled by reservation, held on the first Wednesday of the month during September through May. Dues are $50.00, annually. Venues vary, but the doors open at 11:00 for fellowship, followed by a unique program with lunch and other surprises. For more information, please visit PSOG.org. Pensacola Orchestra Guild Members receive prime seating for the Masterworks series of the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra. Members have the opportunity to assist with the Music in Education Program and hospitality to the visiting musicians as well as the orchestra musicians. The signature Magnolias and White Linens luncheon, sponsored by the Symphony Orchestra Guild, is an event the entire community looks forward to while being the major fund raiser of the PSOG in providing a monetary gift to the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra.

I AM PENSACOLA
Shelley Black
What is your hometown and how did you end up in the Pensacola area? I’m originally a Texas girl. I was a freshman in college when my mother found Pensacola. She had come east to visit and fell in love immediately! Upon returning home, she informed me she was moving to Pensacola and asked me to come with her. It was an easy decision - once I heard emerald waters and white sand beaches I was sold! I was here for less than a month when I was set up on a blind date with Steve. We were engaged 6 months later and married 6 months after that! That was 33 years ago. Tell us what you do. Steve and I have owned Green Procedures Inc., a landscape firm for over 35 years. We also have a new robotic automower dealership, Grenbots Inc., AND a 501C Food and Wine Club, Bread and Table Inc. Steve graduated from University of Florida with an agronomy degree in 1985 and started GPI that same year with a friend. Evolved over the years with many challenges, it has always been our mainstay and a blessing to our family. We’ve been fortunate enough to design, build, and maintain some of the most notable landscapes in NWFL and continue to do so. Recently we were offered the opportunity to own the area’s 1st robotic mower dealership as it was the perfect fit for us and we are enjoying educating communities on this new technology. Bread & Table Club is a culmination of all of the things we love in life… good food, great wines, unique experiences and friends that love to share these with us … all while raising monies to feed our local children. What are some of your favorite things about Pensacola? Downtown! We raised our brilliant, beautiful kids in the country and as they married and left for adventures of their own, we moved downtown. Now, we walk or bike everywhere! It’s such a quaint, lovely area and we have made so many wonderful friends here. We have beautiful neighborhoods, walking and bike trails, parks, tons of amazing restaurants, theatres, museums, fabulous boutiques, and a beautiful waterfront. We will never live anywhere else. Three words that best describe you. Honest. Playful. Caring. Favorite place for dining and entertainment? Our fantastic downtown food scene! We have so many of the most amazing talented chefs putting out mindblowing dishes every day, which we take advantage of on a daily basis. What is the one thing you do not go a day without? Prayer (and a lot of laughter!) I couldn’t imagine going through life without my faith in God. I am blessed to have a husband that wholeheartedly walks, talks, and leads through his faith, in addition to keeping me laughing no matter what challenges we are faced with. Finish this statement, I AM PENSACOLA because… Pensacola is in me. I could never see myself anywhere else. I was married here, raised my family here, built businesses here, established lifetime friendships here, and that’s only the FIRST half of my life. I will forever be an advocate for my beautiful amazing big little city! photo by Kristina Wright
