LIGHTWIRE’S MOON MOUSE - March Break!

ELEPHANT & PIGGIE’S WE ARE IN A PLAY!

FRED PENNER

Monday, March 13 at 1 p.m. & 7 p.m.

Sunday, March 26 at 1 p.m.

A cosmic adventure about celebrating differences. Marvin the mouse wants to be popular. Constantly bullied and picked on by the “cool” rats, he is labeled as a looser and a geek. To get away from the continuous badgering, he retreats into his science books and a world of fantasy. He longs to have adventures, to be the hero. Join Marvin on the space adventure of a lifetime; a trip to the surface of the moon on his homemade rocket, where he meets a strange cast of misfit creatures, learns of infinite peril and awesome beauty. Will Marvin make his dreams come true and bring him the glory and acceptance he craves?

A Kennedy Center commission based on the Elephant & Piggie books by Mo Willems We Are in a Play!, is a brand-new vaudevillian romp of a musical, Elephant Gerald and Piggie sing and dance their way through plenty of pachydermal peril and swiney suspense--facing fundamental questions like, what do you wear to a fancy pool costume party? Should you share your ice cream? And how can two friends play with one toy? Backed by nutty back-up singers The Squirrelles, our duo even gets the audience involved in the action. So get ready for a musical experience ripped from the pages of your favorite books. You’ll be doing the "Flippy Floppy Floory" dance all night long!

Like the precious ingredients in your favourite feel good soup, his combination of warmth, ease, enthusiasm and grace bring nourishment too often lacking in these turbulent times. The two-time JUNO winner for Best Children’s Album Sing with Fred and eight-time nominee’s body of work is about energy and emotional connection. The guy who crawled magically out of that hollow log for 12 seasons and nearly 900 episodes in the hit CBC TV show Fred Penner’s Place receives fan mail to this day. Always building on a common theme rooted in integrity and a “belief in what I can do” he has created a lasting impact that crosses the generations and continues to grow.

LoS LOBOS Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 8 p.m. rehearsals and “outlining” what the project was going to be. The more spontaneous approach to writing and recording that they took on their 1992 Mitchell Froom co-produced set Kiko still exists today; Rosas says, “When I listen to our catalog, doing things more spontaneously in the studio has led to some of our best work.” Unlike many bands that write, gather and catalog material between studio releases, Los Lobos prefers to create their magic on the fly when they decide it’s time to record. Perez says, “We never come in with a cache of 20 songs. Our thing is to write as we’re recording. It’s like starting with a blank canvas every time.” The journey to Gates of Gold began with Hidalgo bringing in a batch of ideas, outlines and chord progressions with no lyrics. As he and Perez began fleshing things out, developing grooves, melodies and lyrical themes, Hidalgo, his son, drummer David, Jr. and bassist Lozano began tracking those tunes. The collection opens with the reflective, mid-tempo rocker Made To Break Your Heart, featuring female vocalist Syd Straw, whose vibe was partially inspired by Hidalgo’s love for Manassas, the early 70s bluescountry-rock band created by Stephen Stills. The moody, atmospheric rocker When We Were Free, whose lyrics of what Berlin calls “beautiful melancholy memories” are underscored with the increasing drama of booming drums and distorted electric guitars. Filled with hypnotic sound effects and cool vocal and guitar distortion (created via an eight track analog Cascam cassette recorder!), the soulful, reflective There I Go touches on the universal search for what Perez calls “something meaningful, though we’re not always sure what it is.”

After celebrating their 40th anniversary with the cleverly titled 2013 live album Disconnected In New York City, the hard working, constantly touring band – David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano and Steve Berlin – leaps headfirst into their fifth decade with an invitation to join them as they open fresh and exciting new Gates of Gold, their first full length studio album since 2010’s Tin Can Trust (a Grammy nominee for Best Americana Album) and second with Savoy/429 Records. The dynamic songwriting, deeply poetic lyrics, thoughtful romantic and spiritual themes and eclectic blend of styles on the 11 track collection has resulted in an American saga in the rich literary tradition of legendary authors John Steinbeck and William Faulkner. Yet true to form, these typically humble musical wolves started in on the project without any grand vision or musical roadmap. Over 30 years after Los Lobos’ major label breakthrough How Will The Wolf Survive? – their 1984 album that ranks #30 on Rolling Stones list of the 100 greatest albums of the 1980s – their main challenge when they get off the road and head back into the studio is, as Berlin says, “trying not to do stuff we’ve already done. To a certain extent, we are always drawing from the same multifaceted paint box, and we sound like what we sound like. We’re proud of what we feel is an honest body of work. We just want to keep finding new ways to say things.” In the band’s early recording days - those years just before and after La Bamba, their worldwide crossover hit from the 1987 film which reached #1 on the U.S. and UK singles chart – they prepared for album recording sessions with top producers like T-Bone Burnett with pre-production that included multiple

Rhapsody in Black Paradiso Dance, Drama & Film Series

A pay-what-you-can performance • Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 8 p.m. Broadway and the national tour. Ms. Parsons’ directing credits include: a multi-cultural Anthony and Cleopatra described as “the most exciting and innovative presentation in English since Peter Brook’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Belasco Theater; Flaubert’s Madame Bovary adapted by Adrienne Kennedy at the Signature Theater, NYC; Oedipus the King (Yeats adaptation) and Salome: The Reading (Oscar Wilde) with Al Pacino on Broadway and the national tour. Nominated four times for the Tony Award, Ms. Parsons was inducted into the American Theater Hall Of Fame in 2004. Leland Gantt first unveiled Rhapsody in Black at the WorkShop Theater Company’s Sundays@Six reading series. Further development at The Actors Studio yielded a slot in their Playwrights/Directors Unit’s spring festival and, subsequently, a threeweek workshop run. Regional credits include: Two Trains Running and Radio Golf (Syracuse Stage); Walter Mosley’s The Fall of Heaven, (Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park); Gem of the Ocean (Arena Stage), Jitney (Pittsburgh Public Theater), and In Walks Ed (Longwharf Theater). Off-Broadway/Broadway: Slippery When Wet (La Mama), Another Man’s Poison (Peter Jay Sharpe Theater), OyamO’s Killa Dilla and Let Me Live (Drama Desk and Audelco Award nominee for Featured Actor), and the revival of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (u/s Rock Dutton). Film and television credits include: Miracle at St. Anna, Requiem for a Dream, Malcolm X, Presumed Innocent, Law and Order, Law and Order SVU, J.A.G., and HBO’s The Affair.

Written and performed by LeLand Gantt and developed at NYC’s Actors Studio by Estelle Parsons, Rhapsody in Black is a one man show that explores LeLand’s personal journey to understand and eventually transcend racism in America. We follow his spellbinding life story – from an underprivileged childhood in the ghettos of McKeesport, Pennsylvania to teenage experiments with crime and drugs to scholastic achievement and an acting career that land adult LeLand in situations where he is virtually the only African-American in the room. How he manages to cope with the various psychological effects of consistently being marked “The Other” is recounted in remarkable and exquisitely moving detail, guaranteed to leave lasting impressions. Multiple elements combine to give Rhapsody its super-powered emotional punch, many of them concentrated in the incredible persona of its star. Charming, selfdeprecatingly funny, linguistically awesome, LeLand Gantt imbues every word that falls from his mouth with all the passion and poignancy of a preacher speaking the Gospel. This is partly because he’s confronting heavy subjects, but mostly because he believes so firmly in his message that it’s impossible for it to emerge any other way. In his own words; “Objective truth strikes a chord.” Estelle Parsons won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1967 for her role as Blanche Barrow in Bonnie and Clyde. Among her most noted television roles, she played Roseanne’s mother on the awardwinning sitcom Roseanne. She played the title role in Miss Margarita’s Way and Violet Weston in August: Osage County on

LISALOEB Friday, February 17, 2017 at 8 p.m.

Lisa Loeb’s highly anticipated return to the pop/rock world after immersing herself in other projects may be called No Fairy Tale, but it’s actually another charmed chapter of her storybook-like career which began in the mid-90s. She emerged from the New York coffeehouse and club circuits with her trademark Grammy nominated hit Stay (I Missed You) – the only artist (still) to ever have a number one Billboard pop single while not signed to a recording contract. The multi-talented singer/songwriter, inspired to work with co-producer Chad Gilbert, guitarist and founding member of rockers New Found Glory, stirs up a glorious pop/punk rock sound over the course of 12 tracks that are both coolly contemporary yet rough around the edges on her new musical declaration No Fairy Tale. A longtime fan, Gilbert emailed Lisa with his idea for a collaborative project. Loeb and Gilbert first worked together when he asked her to sing on his band’s punky version of Stay on their film songs cover album From The Screen To Your Stereo Part II in 2007. In 2009, Loeb joined New Found Glory onstage at the Nokia Theatre (now the Best Buy Center) in Times Square for a live performance of the song. Gilbert had received an email alert about a stop on her book tour for the Lisa Loeb’s Silly Sing-Along: The Disappointing Pancake and other Zany Songs book/CD project. “I got the crazy idea to email her to say, ‘I know you do these kids books, but when are you going to let me produce a full-on modern indie pop/rock record for you. You haven’t done one in a while.” Loeb recalls that Gilbert’s email included the phrase “poppy-punky-rock album,” a concept she was immediately receptive to. He also felt that a recent influx of female fronted groups like Canadian duo Tegan and Sara – whom New Found Glory had toured with – made

the time right for the singer to record a raucous, upbeat album with a fresh perspective that would, in his words, “make her sound like it was her first recording ever.” Gilbert adds, “Besides, she’s a character, and her voice has always been so cool and unique. There are a lot of great artists out there, but no one sounds like Lisa.” Loeb agreed that the timing was ideal. “When he mentioned Tegan and Sara, it seemed perfect as I was very inspired by them and actually listened to their music while writing a lot of recent songs. It’s funny that Chad and I have always gotten along so well. He’s a tattooed up post-punk rocker and I’m known more as a singer/songwriter with glasses, which may seem like an unlikely pair, but it totally makes sense. He brought a whole new angle to my music and it was great to work with many of the musicians he works with down in Orange County (California), as well as Joe Marro and Forrest Kline from the pop-punk band Hello Goodbye, who he enlisted to play keyboards.” With the addition of veteran mix engineer Brad Wood, whose credits include Smashing Pumpkins, Liz Phair and Pete Yorn, the sound of No Fairy Tale soon melded into the perfect balance of Loeb’s past “professional largeness” with the “not perfect but edgy” style she and Gilbert created. Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb was launched into the limelight in 1994 with her platinumselling Number 1 hit song Stay (I Missed You) from the film Reality Bites. Since then, she has enjoyed a successful career encompassing music, film, television, voice-over work and children’s recordings. In addition to raising two children, Loeb is currently working on a new eyewear line, Lisa Loeb Eyewear (in partnership with Classique Eyewear); her second children’s book Lisa Loeb’s Songs for Moving and Shaking; and No Fairy Tale.

WHITEHORSE Friday, February 24, 2017 at 8 p.m. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Whitehorse’s story has been told as two acclaimed musicians joining forces under one new name – no drummer, no keyboard player, violinist or even bass player on call, and no producer. Just Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland. The first album and EP demonstrate the success of this simple equation, one plus one, with an abundance of guitar slinging, songwriting expertise and white-hot desire. Of course, the live show has been anything but simple. Melissa and Luke present a full band sound using live loops, bits and pieces percussion, and swapping guitars left right and centre on stage. By the time Whitehorse took to the stage at Toronto’s esteemed Massey Hall for their sold-out debut in 2013, the edge of the ledge effect of their earliest shows had transformed into a nimble ballet of moving instruments, layers of percussion, voice and keys, layered upon each other. With their sophomore LP Leave No Bridge Unburned, Whitehorse messes with the math. The duo hired ex-pat producer Gus Van Go to make the record. The three met at the 2013 Polaris Music Prize Gala, where Whitehorse performed as a Short List nominee for The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss. With this move, Whitehorse’s studio team instantly doubled – Gus and his frequent collaborator Werner F transformed the duo’s song-making dynamic into a group conversation. Leave No Bridge Unburned signals a new era for Whitehorse, a time of expanded musical influence and community. Leave No Bridge Unburned boasts more of everything that makes Whitehorse exciting and innovative – it’s Whitehorse amplified, increased, intensified. If The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss was Whitehorse’s urgent, romantic statement on uncertainty and impending disaster, Leave No Bridge Unburned is a reckoning, a confrontation. The smoulders on Fate have become a full-blown blaze, a wall of heat. Leave No Bridge Unburned is all about surging ahead; there’s nothing to lose and no way to return. There are songs that tap into Luke and Melissa’s shared fascination with the American south. Opening track Baby What’s Wrong is the story of a creepy lover told with an evil twang, an even darker version of Calexico’s desert noir. The

mariachi trumpet of You Get Older, about a human smuggler with an existential side, also conjures the burnt-out border towns, stray dogs and rooster crows that populate Spaghetti Westerns, Southern Gothic novels and dusty post-apocalyptic landscapes. Another recurring Whitehorse theme is the urban/suburban divide which clefts political, social and artistic factions. Cities, specifically New York and Toronto, never cease to inspire the two. Downtown points to Toronto’s mayoral debacle, a local media circus and international embarrassment, but also the loneliness of urban living and the gulf between left and right. Dear Irony romances detachment while also wondering what good comes of it, a song also peppered with New York references and a city street vibe. And then there’s the love song. Leave No Bridge Unburned contains what Melissa calls her first real love song for Luke. Sweet Disaster channels slinky, stylized Bond themes and Sixties’ R&B in a story about one rich man’s quest to send a couple to Mars. Fitting, for a band best described as “space cowboy lovebirds” (Now Magazine, Toronto). Whitehorse formed in 2010 by husband and wife solo musicians Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland. The two toured in each other’s bands for years, but they put aside their award winning individual careers to build a new band out of their exceptional guitar playing, his and her harmonies and a flair for dramatic, narrative songwriting. Whitehorse has since been nominated for the Polaris Short List (2013) for The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss, played sold out shows across Canada, and established itself in the USA as a band to watch with stellar reviews for The Fate of the World…, only their first full-length album. Leave No Bridge Unburned sees Whitehorse shaping a bigger, bolder rock sound. Any lingering assumptions that the two are working within the boundaries of a folk duo should be put to rest. Leave No Bridge Unburned is a fiery, forceful and finely tuned album. While there’s more in the mix now, more people at the board, more sonic swagger in the ears, Whitehorse will continue to be a story told of intimacy and passion. Two musicians, one band, no looking back.

MONKEYJUNK

AND THE HARPOONIST & THE AXE MURDERER Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 8 p.m. MONKEYJUNK

every beat and every lyric. MonkeyJunk is a reminder to listeners that musicianship, ability and strong song writing always triumph.

The 2008 birth of the Ottawa-based band MonkeyJunk came along just when music fans needed them the most. They brought an accessible and refreshing blend of swamp-rock roots and blues to the table and haven’t looked back. In the relatively short time they’ve been performing and recording together, the members of MonkeyJunk have won a collective 20 Maple Blues Awards, two Canadian Independent Music Awards, a Blues Music Award (USA), and have been nominated twice for a JUNO Award, taking home the coveted hardware in 2012. Straight out of the gate, MonkeyJunk quickly became one of the most popular new bands on the scene, performing at festivals and packed venues across the country, amassing a large audience of devoted fans, affectionately called “MonkeyJunkies”. In fact, they hit the road for a tour before their debut album Tiger In Your Tank was even released. They are not a fluke, one-off collective or “ordinary Joes” who decided to start a band. These are three musicians who individually had established careers prior to forming MonkeyJunk. Steve Marriner, the trio’s vocalist, baritone guitarist, harmonica and organ player, was well known as the ‘go-to’ guy as a producer, sideman and session player. He’s also toured the world performing alongside Harry Manx. Steve is also the consummate musical networker and stage guest having been invited to join many artists in concert such as Randy Bachman, Colin James and Big Sugar. At the age of nineteen, lead guitarist Tony D performed for three nights in Buddy Guy’s band. In 1982, he opened for Stevie Ray Vaughn. These events helped propel him into a long-standing career with his own popular project, The Tony D Band. He has also toured with some of this country’s greatest musicians, including the late Dutch Mason. Before MonkeyJunk, drummer and percussionist Matt Sobb was a very busy session drummer around Ottawa and has backed up several regional, national and international artists live on stage, touring and in studio over the last 24 years such as Kim Wilson (Fabulous Thunderbirds), Jeff Healey and Tom Wilson (Blackie & The Rodeo Kings, Junkhouse, Lee Harvey Osmond), The Tony D Band, his brother’s band Marty Sobb and The Mobb among many others. As one of Canada’s heaviest bands since Big Sugar, their music is passionate and edgy with unfettered delivery. The trio of long-time friends and colleagues just seem to click in a way that is at once natural and otherworldly. Their passion, conviction and dedication to their music is evident with every lick,

THE HARPOONIST & THE AXE MURDERER In reality, Shawn ‘The Harpoonist’ Hall and Matthew ‘The Axe Murderer’ Rogers evoke much more than just grisly nautical imagery. Armed with an arsenal of harmonicas, a mess of foot percussion, and a road-worn Telecaster, the duo kick out raw and primal blues in the tradition of a “decades-deep blues style - Scott Brown, What’s up Yukon, while infusing the genre with a jolt of renewed energy. The two met and bonded over music while recording a radio jingle. Their memorable name is inspired by a lyric from Kris Kristofferson’s Bobby McGee that references the blues harp, (‘I took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana’) and ‘axe’, a common term for the guitar. Their influences range from the iconic songwriting of Willie Dixon to the boundary pushing of Jack White and Danger Mouse, but their sound is distinctly their own, smothered in greasy, gritty soul and imbued with funk. Shawn Hall provides the rousing, rugged vocals and blues harmonica, while Matthew Rogers rips on the guitar and pounds the skins with his feet. Their music is unapologetic. It slaps you in the face and makes you sweat like it’s a sticky, summer night. It cuts you to the core. It’s the blues played the way it was meant to be played. Shawn and Matthew have received considerable recognition in the last few years. They have been nominated for multiple Maple Blues Awards and won Blues Act of the Year at the SiriusXM Indies in 2013. The duo has also pounded their fair share of festival stages including SXSW 2013/14, Winnipeg Folk Fest, Ottawa Blues Fest, Calgary Folk Fest, and Montreal Jazz Fest. Along the way they’ve shared the stage with Taj Mahal, Booker T Jones, David Wilcox, Mother Mother, The Sheep Dogs, and Serena Ryder. They’ve also had songs featured on television shows such as the The Good Wife, Blue Bloods, and the aptly named TV movie Lizzie Borden Took An Axe. The duo has no plans to slow down. They’re on a continuing journey, constantly finding inspiration from musicians they meet or collaborate with. These encounters challenge them to deepen their songwriting and to keep performing with their trademark fervor and honesty. And the result? As one fan put it, is “blues that gets you in the crotch”.

STEPHEN FEARING Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 8 p.m. Stephen Fearing’s music embodies a fierce intelligence, a haunting candor, and a steady-handed pursuit of fleeting beauty. He exudes an abiding love for his craft and a respect for his audience that is reflected in two JUNO awards and a touring circuit that includes festival stages and concert halls across Canada, Europe and The United States. A beguiling teller of tales and a singularly intense instrumentalist, Fearing is an alluring entertainer – heartbreaking, expansive and full of mirth - with a clear, honorable voice that lifts you out into his wide world and “brings you back home to yourself”. For over twenty years, Stephen Fearing has been recording and touring with the rhythm section of Gary Craig (drums) and John Dymond (bass). Through his work with Blackie and The Rodeo Kings, Fearing & White or on his own solo work, these two veteran musicians have shaped how Fearing thinks of a rhythm section and what he expects from the players he works with. Gary Craig is a master drummer/percussionist who is regarded as the most sought after drummer in Canada. The Toronto-based, awardwinning musician has performed live and in the studio with many artists including Anne Murray, Bruce Cockburn, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Tom Cochrane, Jann Arden, Kathleen Edwards and The Rankin Family. John Dymond has collaborated with a who’s who of Canadian music. If you’ve listened to artists like Bruce Cockburn, k.d. lang, Colin Linden and Blackie and the Rodeo Kings you’ve heard John. Named Canadian Country Music Bass Player of the Year (three times), JD is one of the elite “first-call” recording and live musicians working in Canada and The US. THE JOSHUA TREE U2 • Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at 8 p.m.

For a band that’s always specialized in inspirational, largerthan-life gestures – a band utterly determined to be Important – The Joshua Tree could be the big one, and that’s precisely what it sounds like. That’s not to say that this record is either a flagrantly commercial move or another Born in the U.S.A. The Joshua Tree is U2’s most varied, subtle and accessible album, although it doesn’t contain any sure-fire smash hits. But in its musical toughness and strong-willed spirituality, the album lives up to its namesake: a hardy, twisted tree that grows in the rocky deserts of the American Southwest. A Mormon legend claims that their early settlers called the Joshua tree “the praying plant” and thought its gnarled branches suggested the Old Testament prophet Joshua pointing the way to the Promised Land. The title befits a record that concerns itself with resilience in the face of utter social and political desolation, a record steeped in religious imagery. More than any other U2 album, though, The Joshua Tree has the power and allure to seduce and capture a mass audience on its own terms. Without making a show of its eclecticism, it features assertive rock (Where the Streets Have No Name), raw frenzy (Bullet the Blue Sky), delicacy (One Tree Hill), chugging rhythms (I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For) and even acoustic bluesiness (Running to Stand Still) – all of it unmistakably U2. But if this is a breakthrough, it’s a grim, dark-hued one. At first, refreshingly honest, romantic declarations alternate with unsettling religious imagery. Then things get blacker. The raging, melodramatic Bullet the Blue Sky ties Biblical fire and brimstone with American violence overseas and at home. In the stomping, harmonica spiked rocker Trip Through Your Wires, what looks like salvation could easily be evil seduction; One Tree Hill is a soft, haunting benediction on a U2 crew member who died in a motorcycle accident; and Red Hill Mining Town echoes Peter Gabriel’s Don’t Give Up in its unsparing look at personal relationships savaged by economic hardship – here, the aftermath of the largely unsuccessful British miners’ strike of 1984.

But for all its gloom, the album is never a heavy-handed diatribe. After the first few times through Running to Stand Still, for instance, you notice the remarkable music: the wholly unexpected blues slide guitar, the soft, Nebraska-style yelps, the ghostly harmonica. It sounds like a lovely, peaceful reverie – except that this is a junkie’s reverie, and when that realization hits home, the gentle acoustic lullaby acquires a corrosive power that recalls Bad, from the last LP. The Joshua Tree is an appropriate response to these times, and a picture bleaker than any U2 has ever painted:

a vision of blasted hopes, pointless violence and anguish. But this is not a band to surrender to defeatism. Its last album ended with a gorgeous elegy to Martin Luther King Jr.; The Joshua Tree closes with a haunting ode to other victims. Mothers of the Disappeared is built around desolate images of loss, but the setting is soothing and restorative – music of great sadness but also of unutterable compassion, acceptance and calm. The Unforgettable Chill, you might call this album, and unforgettable is certainly the right word. ~ Steve Pond, Rolling Stone (1987)

Are You Experienced JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE • Friday, April 7, 2017 at 8 p.m. in the early Sixties with Little Richard and the Isley Brothers and his melodic exploitation of amp howl. But it was the pictorial heat of songs like Manic Depression, I Don’t Live Today and The Wind Cries Mary that established the transcendent promise of psychedelia. Hendrix made soul music for

“Jimi Hendrix was arguably the greatest rock instrumentalist of the Sixties. His blunt attack contrasted sharply with the meticulous virtuosity of an Eric Clapton; Hendrix preferred an angry metal whine, molten steel to Clapton’s polished chrome. His rough edges conveyed far more than his awesome dexterity. In a genre where computerized pyrotechnics seem the rule, Hendrix played with a rawness transcending idiomatic formalities.” – Rolling Stone 1974 #15 on Rolling Stone’s definitive list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. This is what Britain sounded like in late 1966 and early 1967: ablaze with rainbow blues, orchestral guitar feedback and the personal cosmic vision of black American émigré Jimi Hendrix. Rescued from dead-end gigs in New York by ex-Animal Chas Chandler, Hendrix arrived in London in September 1966, quickly formed the Experience with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell and in a matter of weeks was recording the songs that comprised his epochal debut – which stands four and a half decades later as rock’s most innovative and expressive guitar record. Hendrix’s incendiary playing was historic in itself, the luminescent sum of his chitlin-circuit labors

inner space. “It’s a collection of free feeling and imagination,” he said of the album. “Imagination is very important.” Widely assumed to be about an acid trip, Purple Haze had “nothing to do with drugs,” Hendrix insisted. “Purple Haze was all about a dream I had that I was walking under the sea.” – RollingStone.com

“Produced by Matthew and Jill themselves, “The Family Album” is a folk record. It’s a record that enthusiastically harkens back to sibling singers of yesteryear, but also one that is not afraid to paint from a broad palette of both traditional sounds and contemporary flourishes. There are just enough hooks and plenty of licks. The vocals are up front, the harmonies are simple, the performances are live and the exquisite band is laid-back. Mixed by Grammy-winner Michael Piersante, the record is warm and full of textures. It aims to be classy in an unadorned way.”~outside-music.com

MatthewBarber &Jill Barber “THE FAMILY ALBUM” Thursday May 4, 2017 at 8 p.m. The Family Album has been years in the making… Jill Barber has garnered over 30 award nominations including two JUNO Awards and has won multiple times at the East Coast Music Awards, Western Canadian Music Awards, Nova Scotia Music Awards and was the recipient of Jazz Artist of the Year from Sirius XM. Jill has also authored two best-selling children’s books. Jill has always crafted original songs that evoke the golden age of music. Her last album Fool’s Gold debuted at #1 on the Canadian Jazz Charts and spent a remarkable 13 weeks there. The Fool’s Gold Canadian Tour concluded at the historic Massey Hall in front of a packed house. Matthew Barber has become one of Canada’s most respected and admired singer songwriters, like his sister, Matthew has been nominated for multiple awards, including a JUNO. Through eight albums, Matthew has stayed close to the folk and roots style of his favourite artists, Neil Young, Bob Dylan but always aware of the hook and the melody. He’s had songs appear on countless TV shows and earned a top 5 radio hit with his song Soft One. At that night in Toronto at Massey Hall, the magical evening ended with just Jill and her brother Matthew on stage singing the Everly Brothers classic All I Have To Do Is Dream. It was a culmination of a lifetime of collaboration and it was there, that Jill and Matthew decided to make a record together. The siblings pored through old records, making lists of their favourite songs. They worked out arrangements in Palm Springs, California and then decided that they should bring their own material to go along with the covers they chose. The Family Album touches on the great Canadian songbook, from Ian Tyson’s Summer Wages, to Neil Young’s Comes A Time, they also delve deeper into honouring the song writing greats Bobby Charles and Townes Van Zandt. The result is a seamless and beautiful work that shows the Barber’s ability to interpret the works of others and craft their own songs that fit snug amongst the classics. The harmonies are sure to bring a chill and a tear and the album will become a staple for those who love both of these great Canadian artists. TANYA TAGAQ

IN CONCERT WITH NANOOK OF THE NORTH Friday, May 5, 2017 at 8 p.m. Tagaq employs exquisite improvisations with traditional roots, a style she has perfected over a decade of performances on major stages worldwide, as well as through collaborations with Björk, Mike Patton and many others. Tanya Tagaq in concert with Nanook of the North was commissioned by the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF Bell Lightbox) as part of it’s film retrospective First People Cinema: 1500 Nations, One Tradition.

Tanya Tagaq, a Polaris Music Prize winner and three-time Juno Award nominee, reclaims the controversial 1922 silent film Nanook of the North. Nanook of the North is considered the world’s first major work of non-fiction filmmaking, yet it is rife with contradictions. The film portrays the lives of an Inuk family in Arctic Canada. Its director, Robert Flaherty, lived and worked with Inuit for years, but still included staged scenes of buffoonery and feigned Inuit ignorance of modern accoutrements. Working with composer Derek Charke (whose Tundra Songs Tagaq performed with the Kronos Quartet), Tagaq, along with percussionist Jean Martin and violinist Jesse Zubot, performs a live accompaniment to the film’s silent images of life in an early 20th-century Inuit community in Northern Quebec. Drawing on her childhood on Nunavut’s Victoria Island, and on her mother’s memories of forced relocation from the film’s Northern Quebec location, Tagaq’s sense of the sound of the Arctic spaces shown in the film transforms the images, adding tremendous feeling and depth to what is a complex mix of beautiful representations and racially charged clichés.

SCREAM. GRUNT. GROWL, GROAN. FLUTTER. QUIVER. HOWL.

Tanya Tagaq’s music isn’t like anything you’ve heard before. Unnerving and exquisite, Tagaq’s unique vocal expression may be rooted in Inuit throat singing but her music has as much to do with electronica, industrial and metal influences as it does with traditional culture. This Inuk punk is known for delivering fearsome, elemental performances that are visceral and physical, heaving and breathing and alive. Her shows draw incredulous response from worldwide audiences, and Tagaq’s tours tend to jump back and forth over the map of the world. From a Mexican EDM festival to Carnegie Hall, her music and performances transcend language.

Nanook of the North film is used courtesy of The Flaherty. Tanya Tagaq, vocals • Jean Martin, drums • Jesse Zubot, violin Regular Ticket: $50 | Big Ticket Member: $43 | Big Ticket Plus: $39 All prices include taxes and handling fees. Box Office: 905-815-2021 or OakvilleCentre.ca

RUMOURS FLEETWOOD MAC • Friday, May 12, 2017 at 8 p.m.

Rumours is the kind of album that transcends its origins and reputation, entering the realm of legend – it’s an album that simply exists outside of criticism and outside of its time, even if it thoroughly captures its era. Prior to this LP, Fleetwood Mac were moderately successful, but here they turned into a full-fledged phenomenon, with Rumours becoming the biggest-selling pop album to date. While its chart success was historic, much of the legend surrounding the record is born from the group's internal turmoil. Unlike most bands, Fleetwood Mac in the mid-70s were professionally and romantically intertwined, with no less than two couples in the band, but as their professional career took off, the personal side unraveled. Bassist John McVie and his keyboardist/singer wife Christine McVie filed for divorce as guitarist/vocalist Lindsey Buckingham and vocalist Stevie Nicks split, with Stevie running to drummer Mick Fleetwood, unbeknown to the rest of the band. These personal tensions fueled nearly every song on Rumours, which makes listening to the album a nearly voyeuristic experience. You're eavesdropping on the bandmates singing painful truths about each other, spreading nasty lies and rumors and wallowing in their grief, all in the presence of the person who caused the heartache. Everybody loves gawking at a good public breakup, but if that was all that it took to sell a record, Richard and Linda Thompson’s Shoot Out the Lights would be multi-platinum. No, what made Rumours an unparalleled blockbuster is the quality of the music. Once again masterminded by producer/songwriter/guitarist

Buckingham, Rumours is an exceptionally musical piece of work – he toughens Christine McVie and softens Nicks, adding weird turns to accessibly melodic works, which gives the universal themes of the songs haunting resonance. It also cloaks the raw emotion of the lyrics in deceptively palatable arrangements that made a tune as wrecked and tortured as Go Your Own Way an anthemic hit. But that's what makes Rumours such an enduring achievement – it turns private pain into something

universal. Some of these songs may be too familiar, whether through their repeated exposure on FM radio or their use in presidential campaigns, but in the context of the album, each tune, each phrase regains its raw, immediate emotional power – which is why Rumours touched a nerve upon its 1977 release, and has since transcended its era to be one of the greatest, most compelling pop albums of all time. ~ allmusic.com

Just as Hollywood evolved following World War II, the Hindi film industry flourished by adapting a musical format which featured songs and dances, giving rise to prolific music composers who defined and developed a unique Indian sound. Composers such as C. Ramachandran, Shankar Jaikishan and RD Burman were heavily influenced by Big Band Jazz, orchestral arrangements, and Latin percussion. In the 70s, 80s and 90s, film music directors Bappi Lahiri, Biddu, AR Rahman, and Shankar Ehsaan Loy utilized other genres of music such as Disco, Reggae and Celtic music, creating some of the most exciting songs and dances that have made Bollywood loved worldwide. Choreographed and directed by MTV India “ubbharta sitara” (rising star) Bageshree Vaze, the show brings the music of Bollywood’s best to life through dance and visuals, featuring a cast of Toronto musicians and dance artists including Vineet Vyas (tabla), Sundar Viswanathan (saxophone/flute), Kevin Laliberte (guitar), Justin Gray (bass), Derek Gray (percussion), Diana Reyes, Adam Martino and KJ McNight (dancers). Bageshree Vaze is an Indo-Canadian dance artist and musician, a 2004 MTV India “ubbharta sitara” (rising star) whose diverse cultural influences that range from Indian classical to American pop result in a dynamic confluence of global sounds and dances. Raised in St. John’s, NL, she initially trained in Bharatha Natyam with teachers in Michigan (Sudha Sekhar) and Bombay (the late Guru T.K. Mahalingam Pillai), and studied Hindustani vocal music with her father, Damodar Vaze. She later trained in Kathak with Jai Kishan Maharaj in New Delhi and studied with the renowned vocalist Veena Sahasrabuddhe in Mumbai. Based in Toronto, Bageshree has choreographed numerous dance works such as 2007’s “Tarana,” 2011’s Avatar (9), and 2012’s Damaru/Mudra and has three CDs to her credit. Her breakthrough album Tarana (released as Khanak through Times Music in India), a CD of songs adapted and arranged for Indian dance, is accessed by dancers worldwide. Bageshree has been commissioned by and has performed in major festivals including Dusk Dances, the CanAsian International Dance Festival, and Pt. Birju Maharaj’s Vasantotsav festival in New Delhi, and in 2010 she was a corecipient of the K.M. Hunter Award in Dance.
