A Word from the Head of School Dear Greenhill Community, The spirit of our community – the openness, the warmth and the perseverance – has always defined our School. Everyone on campus holds the belief that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. This past spring, that belief became a reality as more than 3,000 students and faculty members descended on our campus for the 2012 ISAS Fine Arts Festival. (See page 6 for details.) Michael Manes, Fine Arts Head, and the entire fine arts staff deserve praise for their efforts in scheduling hundreds of student performances, facilitating multiple arts workshops, and coordinating the small army of Greenhill volunteers that helped to run the event. As visiting schools called the festival one of the best in years, I have never felt more proud of our entire community for coming together for this landmark event. In the wake of such an all-encompassing monumental event last year, we have opened this year with a call to action. Our theme for the 2012–2013 year is Action: Make a Difference. Be the Difference. It is our goal to inspire activity, engagement and involvement in our School, in our community and in the world. While the theme is a bit different from those in the past (honor, respect, compassion, excellence, etc.), we feel that it can be used in multiple settings with a goal of asking you, the entire Greenhill community, for your commitment to making our School, our community and our world a better place. I hope you will give some time to reflect upon how you can use this theme in your thoughts, life and work for the coming year. While we look forward, we can also look back for a moment, recognizing the Class of 2012. In total, the students applied to 228 different colleges with tremendous success and will attend 70 different schools in the fall. The breadth of the schools that our students attend demonstrates our customized approach toward the college admission process, matching the student with the school that will provide the best fit for him or her. Twelve students applied to prestigious art programs, and nine members of the class will participate in Division I and III level sports programs. We look forward to following the Class of 2012 as they continue their academic journey.

As her youngest son Chris graduated, Karla Barber finished her term as Chair of the Board of Trustees. She has provided hours of counsel, guidance and leadership, and we look forward to her continued support as she serves on the board as chair of the Trusteeship Committee. Peter Kraus, parent of Will ’12, junior Nick and eighth-grader Jack, will follow Karla as board chair and will look to ensure that Greenhill provides a love of learning that makes pursing excellence second nature. We also take this opportunity to acknowledge the many parents, alumni, grandparents, parents of alumni, faculty, staff and friends of Greenhill who contributed to the School in 2011–2012 in our Annual Report of Gifts. Through your generosity, we have built our endowment and provided operational excellence. Greenhill Unites for 2012 ISAS Fine Arts Festival

istening to jazz concerts, dancing to the drum lines and admiring 2-D and 3-D art were three of the many options available to the more than 3,400 students and faculty that filled the Greenhill campus for the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) Fine Arts Festival 2012, held on March 29–31. The annual festival is a celebration of the arts for Upper School students, with student-to-peer performances, displays of artwork and workshops for expanding skills. In the 12 years since Greenhill last hosted the festival, the size and scope of the event has increased by 30%, requiring extensive planning by Michael Manes and the fine arts staff, and the support of the entire School. The effort did not go unnoticed. The Executive Director of ISAS, Rhoda

Durham, wrote in an email, “Hard to rank these festivals, but if I had to, best ever. Everything was smooth and cool. It looked like it was the way school was every day. How you made it look effortless was magical.” With the help of the Green Team, Greenhill’s all-community group to improve sustainability on campus, the festival planners took steps to limit the carbon footprint of such a large group of people. One of the biggest changes involved eliminating a detailed printed program. Instead, all information about venues, performance times, and workshops was available on a downloadable app for smartphones. Having an electronic guidebook allowed the organizers to make and announce schedule changes in real time.

Other steps to reduce environmental impact included using biodegradable plasticware in the food tent, placing recycling bins near all trash cans, and setting up water stations for refilling reusable containers, rather than selling individual bottles of water. Another novelty of this year’s festival was the presence of local food trucks. Students and faculty purchased tacos from Rock and Roll Tacos, pizza from Gepetto’s, cupcakes from Trailercakes, and other fare from the trucks that lined the front circle and the carts dotting the quad.

Parked directly in front of Three Chimneys Building during the festival, this “art car” sculpture served as a visual icon to the festival. The retired Greenhill bus was transformed by student artists under the direction of visiting artist Mark Monroe and coordinated by art teacher Tony Schraufnagel.

Because of the combined efforts of the fine arts faculty, Greenhill parent volunteers, and the entire Greenhill community, the festival was a huge success. Student attendees posted praise on Facebook, and the fine arts faculty received accolades from their peers. “In the 12 years I have been at Greenhill,” said Dani Butowsky, Greenhill ISAS Parent Volunteer Leader, “I have never been more proud to be a part of the Greenhill community.”

Greenhill School’s 61st Commencement On June 3, 2012, the Class of 2012 gathered at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center for the 61st school commencement. Head of School Scott Griggs gave welcoming remarks and Assistant Head of School Tom Perryman ’81 gave the invocation. Rachel Packer ’12 was named salutatorian and Sankalp Banerjee ’12 was named valedictorian.

Commencement speaker Elizabeth Aguebor ’12 called her fellow classmates to “give back all that [they’ve] been given.” She also thanked her family for the opportunity to attend Greenhill. “I feel so privileged to have followed in my brothers’ footsteps ... We’ve all agreed that we couldn’t imagine who we would be without this School. Thanks to the sacrifices our parents have made, they were able to put all three of their children through one of the top schools in the United States ... I believe that I am capable because I made it through Greenhill, which affirms that I can go out and contribute to others all that I’ve learned here.” Fellow commencement speaker Cole Sadler ’12 delivered a heartfelt address about the accomplishments of his classmates and what he has really learned at Greenhill. “The true gift Greenhill has imparted runs far deeper than simply career path building. Greenhill has taught us how to look in the eyes of someone, and know we can count on [them] to stick with us. It has taught us

how to make connections to others of any age, race, or creed. It has taught us that what is most crucial to learning is the ability to feel present in a room, and truly cared about as much as you would want to be cared for. Never forget this.” The distribution of diplomas followed and Mr. Griggs concluded the ceremony with the charge to the Class of 2012: “By virtue of your hard work at Greenhill, I can assure you that your foundation is secure. You have built that foundation with the support of your parents and your teachers who have guided you each and every step along the way. As I always share at this time, you have been taught how to think, not what to think. This will serve you well as you move beyond Greenhill.”

Reflections on the Hill Max McKamy ’12 What are you looking forward to most at college? I would say that the thing I am looking forward to the most is meeting new people and the strong school spirit at The University of Texas. How will you change the world? I don’t know today how I will change the world, but what I can do is live every day to the fullest and never take one for granted. What’s the best advice you’ve received and from whom? The best advice I received came from my mom and she told me to always keep my head up even when things may not be going my way. If the Greenhill Hornet fought your college mascot, who would win? If the two mascots were to fight, I think the Longhorn would most likely take care of the Hornet pretty quickly. Now that you are college bound, what advice would you give to rising seniors? The best advice I would give to a rising senior would be to try and enjoy every second of your senior year because it will get hard at some points, but you’ll have some of the best times of your life that you will carry with you forever. _____________________________________________________

Sankalp Banerjee ’12 What are you looking forward to most at college? I am most looking forward to the flexibility that college provides, both academically and socially. I think the ability to try and fail brings the best out of any student. How will you change the world? When people think of “changing the world,” they often think of radical ideas or innovations that immediately cure all of the world’s problems. In reality, the majority of the world’s problems merely stem from inefficiencies in our system. To solve problems like food scarcity, pollution, and lack of healthcare, we don’t really need panaceas; we just need to make our existing systems more efficient. I hope to dedicate my education to innovations in this field.

If the Greenhill Hornet fought your college mascot, who would win? This would be an interesting match-up. While the Hornet might successfully engage in asymmetric warfare for some time, the Princeton Tiger would win by virtue of size and strength alone. If your high school career were a song, what would it be and why? Life is a Highway by Rascal Flatts. The message of this song clearly applies to life in general, but is of special importance for high school. While my high school career hasn’t always been as smooth or comfortable as a highway, I have repeatedly challenged myself to enjoy the ride. Over the past four years, I found it especially valuable to take time out of my schedule while trying not to get too immersed in homework. This did not always work, but it was a productive exercise nevertheless. _____________________________________________________

Jessica Solls ’12 What are you looking forward to most at college? I’m looking forward to experiencing a new city and meeting new friends! I’ve heard that living in New Orleans is like living in a whole different country so I’m most excited about the experience of it all! I’m also excited for the opportunity to travel abroad and the freedom I will enjoy living away from home. What will you miss about your hometown? I will miss my friends and family of course. My favorite restaurants are Blue Fish and Mi Cocina so I will definitely miss my weekly dinners there. I will also miss the shopping in Dallas and definitely sleeping in my bed at home! What’s the best advice you’ve received and from whom? My parents have always told me to be open minded, to never forget where I’ve come from and to always be true to myself. If the Greenhill Hornet fought your college mascot, who would win? People often think that the Tulane mascot is Gumby the Green Wave. In 1998, however, they changed their mascot to be Riptide the Pelican! I think Riptide could beat Heidi or Hugo – although I don’t find either of them to be too intimidating! If your high school career were a song, what would it be and why? I think the song would be Best Days by Graham Colton. It is more of a goodbye song to my friends, but I love its message about how it is important to live each day to the fullest while we are still together, because it is coming to an end and the rest of our lives are still ahead of us. I guess this also answers the question of what my advice to the rising seniors would be. Make sure to not let a single

day get past you because there aren’t many left. “So don’t wait for someone to tell you it’s too late. Cuz these are the best days. There’s always something tomorrow. So I say let’s make the best of tonight. Here comes the rest of our lives.” _____________________________________________________

Bronsin Ablon ’12 What are you looking forward to most at college? Learning, living, and making friends in a creative environment. How will you change the world? My design will hopefully make the world an easier and more enjoyable place to live in! What’s the best advice you’ve received and from whom? The best advice I’ve received was from my parents, who said “do what makes you happy but what can support your life too.” Now that you are college bound, what advice would you give to rising seniors? I would say relax, appreciate the rest of your time at Greenhill and at home. Don’t schedule a 3rd trimester 6th period class! And remember that a lot of what happens senior year doesn’t really matter in the long haul. _____________________________________________________

Cyerra Holmes ’12 What are you looking forward to most at college? I am most excited about the opportunity to explore the world from an inter-disciplinary aspect. I love how well-rounded the Stanford students are and the fact that it is normal for bioengineering majors to have three-hour-long discussions with archaeology majors about an education speech they heard from the founder of Teach For America. I am excited to broaden my horizons and develop new ways to think. Of course, the California weather and being at the same school as my sister will not hurt either. How will you change the world? I really like the pay it forward approach. I do not believe that I have to be a prominent figure in society, but I do believe that if I can positively impact the life of each person I meet I can hopefully create a domino effect.

If the Greenhill Hornet fought your college mascot, who would win? It would depend on the battleground site. If the Stanford Cardinal, which is a tree, had to be uprooted and fight away from its home territory, I think an army of Hornets might have a chance. However, a firmly rooted Cardinal with a sheer size advantage might come up victorious against a Hornet. Is there any celebrity that you wish followed you on Facebook or Twitter, or that actually does follow you? President Obama. If your high school career were a song, what would it be and why? Marching On by One Republic. This song acknowledges that “we’ll have the days we break,” (some of the most challenging times in high school) and “we’ll have the scars to prove it.” Yet, simultaneously “we’ll have the bonds that we save” from some of the best years in our life and while we will have to “march on” with “one foot in front of the other,” “we’ll have the heart not to lose it” – the memories that we have created for four years. _____________________________________________________

Rachel Packer ’12 What are you looking forward to most at college? I’m really looking forward to meeting new people. College will give me the opportunity to meet students from every corner of the world who have a wide variety of experiences and personalities. What will you miss about your hometown? I will definitely miss the warm, sunshine-filled weather – the Northeast is notoriously cold and cloudy. I’ll also miss Fuji Steakhouse, a Japanese restaurant at the intersection of Preston Road and LBJ. And, of course, my friends. If the Greenhill Hornet fought your college mascot, who would win? I guess it’d be pretty close. Bulldogs are obviously larger and more intimidating, but the Hornet may be a dark horse. Now that you are college bound, what advice would you give to rising seniors? So many people (myself included) spend the beginning of their senior year way too stressed out about college applications. Enjoy every moment of your last year at Greenhill; use it as an opportunity to take that class you’ve been waiting to take since freshman year, or to talk to people who you’ve never spoken to before.

And the Distinguished Alumni Award Goes to ... A touching moment at the Commencement Ceremony came with the presentation of the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award, which is normally announced ahead of time to ensure the alumnus attends. This year, it was announced as a surprise to the very deserving Tom Perryman ’81, whose devotion to Greenhill is inspiring and contagious. In his 25 years of teaching at Greenhill, Mr. Perryman has had a direct impact on thousands of students and has remained steadfastly dedicated to preserving Greenhill’s legacy. He was instrumental in creating the Faculty Leaders program, now in the tenth year, which has recognized 43 outstanding faculty members. He is the co-founder and director of the Lucinda F. Carter Teaching Fellow program, which exposes young people to the joys of teaching. He created the Legends program to recognize faculty and staff who have served for 25 years. And, he also started the Founder’s Day assembly – an annual tradition when the entire school comes together to celebrate the individuals and ideals upon which Greenhill has been built. Also a published author, Tom wrote From Humble Beginnings with his brother David Perryman ’83, documenting the first 50 years of Greenhill School with great care and detail. “Tom Perryman’s career and life shows us that whatever path you choose, if you deeply believe in something, and every day you live what you believe, your life will have a special impact on those around you,” said Clay Deniger ’86, President of the Alumni Association, who presented Tom with the award.

During Tom’s distinguished service to Greenhill, he has supported 30 different funding initiatives including capital campaigns, endowments, annual fund, library gifts and miscellaneous operating. He, along with his brothers David ’83 and John ’86, established the Ann and Ray Perryman Archive Fund in 2000 in honor of their parents. The fund supports the research, acquisition, cataloging and preservation of documents and items that celebrate Greenhill’s history. Tom originally came to Greenhill in 1967 at the age of three. After graduating in 1981, Perryman attended Northwestern University for his bachelors and masters degrees and then attended McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago for his Masters of Theological Studies. Perryman came back to Greenhill and has served his alma mater as a sixth grade English teacher, coach, Head of Lower School, Director of Admission, and currently serves as Assistant Head of School.

What We Did On Summer Vacation By College Counseling “No more pencils, no more books ...” Although this familiar summertime refrain harkens to lazy days of beaches, swimming pools and backyard barbeques, many Greenhill students leave our classrooms eager to dive into summer opportunities designed to help them explore new interests, deepen existing passions, and experience the “real world.” This past summer, Greenhill students researched scientific questions, volunteered their time with local agencies, developed artistic and athletic skills, and learned adult responsibility by working at summer jobs and internships. As students research these opportunities, occasionally they ask their college counselor which activities colleges “like” best. College admissions officers are not looking for one particular summer activity; they want to see students explore their own genuine interests during productive summers. Most importantly, by pursuing engaging summers, students continue learning about their passions – but also about themselves! As college counselors, we also look forward to summer – not only as a time of rest and rejuvenation, but as an opportunity for professional development. Like our rising seniors, we spent a great amount of time visiting college campuses last summer. We travelled to the Association of College Counselors in Independent Schools’ (ACCIS) Summer Institute held at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania and also to the organization’s Summer Colloquium at Santa Clara University in California. The conferences provided exciting chances to network with admissions deans, journalists from publications such as the New York Times, Bloomberg and the Chronicle of

Over the summer of 2012, the College Counseling Office went coast-to-cost and visited nine colleges and universities.

Higher Education, as well as other college counselors to stay abreast of the latest trends in college admissions. Attending such events empowers us to bring valuable information back home to share with our students and families, and it also ensures that we are representing Greenhill School and our students’ interests in the national conversation.

As days grow shorter, and summer fades to a distant memory, our students’ focus begins to shift back to the daily grind of assignments, tests and application deadlines. We feel it’s important to step back occasionally, put down our pencils and books, and remember to take those summer lessons of exploration, passion and self-discovery with us throughout the year. It may just be the breath of fresh air that we need.

Two Greenhill Students Win Prizes in Cardboard Competition Two Greenhill students, fifth-grader Scott Wang and third-grader Gillian Lebowitz, each won first prize in their respective divisions of the 2012 Cardboard Design Competition. The competition was part of the Engineering and Humanity Week sponsored by the Hunt Institute. Each student earned a pizza party for their entire grade and a $500 donation from the Hunt Institute to the School.

Eighth-Grader Wins First Place in National Essay Contest Congratulations to eighth-grader Kas Tebbetts who was chosen as the national winner in the Ancient Coins for Education (ACE) Fall Essay Contest. ACE is a non-profit organization that encourages learning about Classical (Greek, Roman and Byzantine) history through the use of ancient coins.

Award-Winning Author T.A. Barron Visited Greenhill School T.A. Barron, author of The Lost Years of Merlin and The Great Tree of Avalon, visited Greenhill to speak to a Middle School assembly and Upper School creative writing students. He has written over 20 highly acclaimed novels, children’s books and nature books, many of which are international best sellers.

Eighth-Graders Help Select Best Fiction for Young Adults Eighth-graders Lauren Baron, Meg Berry, Liam Duggan, Justin Estrada, Alexandria Moore, Kas Tebbetts and Kevin Wei participated in the Best Fiction for Young Adults Teen Session at the American Library Association Midwinter Conference held at the Dallas Convention Center. Students prepared short presentations reflecting their viewpoints about the books they had chosen to present to the Best Fiction for Young Adults selection committee. The committee then used the teens’ feedback to select the books for the final list.

Sixth-Grader Erin McGuire is Head of School for the Day Erin McGuire had an eventful day as Head of School. She enjoyed a breakfast planning meeting with Executive Assistant Darlene Caraway, wrote an email to all employees “from” Scott Griggs, read to CDC kids and visited her favorite teachers. Her last event of the day was to participate in an Upper School theater class, trying her hand at improvisational comedic acting. Being Head of School for the day is an auction item, donated by Scott Griggs at the annual spring gala.

Visions of the Future Speakers Series Welcomed Dr. Huntoon Dr. Nathan Huntoon of SMU’s Lyle School of Engineering spoke with Middle School students as part of the Visions of the Future Speakers Series. As the Director of the SkunkWorks Innovation Gymnasium in SMU’s Lyle School of Engineering, Huntoon oversees a partnership between Lockheed Martin and SMU. Greenhill Student Honored by Alliance for Young Artists & Writers Greenhill seventh-grader Getty Hesse garnered national recognition in The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards of 2012, which was presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. Hesse won a Silver Medal in the Science Fiction/Fantasy category for a story called “The Addict.” Greenhill MS Student Earns Award for Perfect Score on State Test Greenhill eighth-grader Hartley McGuire received a special plaque in recognition of his performance as the top scorer on the American Mathematics Contest 8 in the State of Texas in 2011. McGuire collected a perfect score on the AMC-8 state test, which is designed to develop problem-solving skills.

Eighth-Grader Stars in Film as Calatrava Bridge “Student Engineer” Eighth-grader Kalen Beacham was among twelve students selected to become an “engineer-for-a-day” and star in a world premiere film, Calatrava Student Constructors. The 20-minute educational outreach film, created by Emmy award-winning producer Judy Kelly, followed local public and private school students who were selected to construct a 20foot long replica of Dallas’ Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge at The Trinity Trust office where actual models and maps reside. Middle Schoolers Take 2nd Place in MathCounts Competition Congratulations to Greenhill’s “A-Team” of eighth-graders Ryan Diebner, Hartley McGuire, Sahil Mittal and Kenneth Wong, (led by math teacher Grant Mindle) for taking 2nd Place at the MathCounts Chapter Competition. McGuire also finished in the top ten, and competed in the Countdown Round.

Seventh-Graders Win Third Place in Nation for Documentary Greenhill seventh-graders, Henry Roseman and Sidarth Subramanian, received third place in the national junior group documentary category of the National History Day Contest for their documentary, From Poison to Pure Joy: The Revolution in Milk Safety. National History Day (NHD), a year-long academic program, focuses on promoting historical research at the level of sixth to twelfth grade students.

Middle Schoolers and Upper Schoolers Place in Classics Competition This summer, twelve Upper School and Middle School Latin students spent a week at Wake Forest University’s National Junior Classical League convention. Accompanied by Joan Romanosky, they competed in contests, attended workshops, participated in elections, and much more. Mrs. Romanosky said, “The students were terrific ambassadors for Greenhill and met other students from all over the country and Canada. Greenhill Middle School Science Olympiad Places Eighth at State Tournament The Greenhill Middle School Science Olympiad Team posted an eighthplace finish at the Texas State Science Olympiad Tournament at Texas A&M University. Over the twoday tournament, Greenhill had 17 students competing in 23 events with 14 garnering an individual medal. This was the team’s tenth consecutive bid to the Tournament.

Two Eighth-Graders Receive Ronnie Freeman Award Lauren Baron and Jacob Pugh were the proud recipients of the Ronnie Freeman Award for the 2011–2012 school year. This award is presented to an eighth-grader who has attended Greenhill for four years and has maintained the highest standards of scholarship, citizenship, leadership and participation in school activities. Upper School News Greenhill Students Host Charity Fashion Show Greenhill sophomores Virginia Dollins and Maddie Crick organized a charity fashion show – Winter Wonderland – benefiting the Family Place in the Montgomery Library. The Family Place is the largest family violence service provider in the Dallas area, reaching out to thousands of victims of family violence each year with award-winning programs that keep women and children safe.

Three Sports Journalists Visit Greenhill As part of history teacher Jason Yaffe's Sports and Society class, he invited a panel of sports journalists, all Greenhill parents, to speak to students about their vast experience in the field, the thrill of breaking stories and staying true to the integrity of journalism. Greenhill welcomed Marc Stein, ESPN basketball; Bryan Broaddus, ESPN radio with a focus on football; and Jaime Aron, longtime AP sports reporter; to the Hill for a fascinating and entertaining question/answer session.

Three Students Represent Greenhill at SMU Literary Festival Seniors Cameron Steurer, Cole Sadler and David Herman represented Greenhill at the 2012 WordSpace Student Readings at the SMU Literary Festival on March 21 at the SMU McCord Auditorium in Dallas Hall. The students and their work were curated by well-known writers who also work in education, including Greenhill’s Farid Matuk. Upper Schoolers Earn High Honors from Texas Junior Academy of Science Greenhill senior Nand Dalal earned silver medal honors and junior Jieyi Cai was awarded honorable mention recognition for their presentations at the Texas Junior Academy of Science in College Station, Texas. Dalal earned second-place recognition for his paper on quantifying denitrification in polar stratospheric regions and Cai garnered honorable mention accolades for her paper on a diagnostic test for metastatic breast cancer.

Montage Receives CSPA Gold Crown Award Congratulations to the students and faculty advisors of the Montage, Greenhill’s literary magazine, on winning a Gold Crown Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA). More than 1,351 printed magazines, newspapers and yearbooks were eligible to enter the Crown Awards. School Principal from Israel Visits Greenhill School Edna Goldschmidt, principal of Ofek School in Western Galilee, Israel, visited Greenhill School on April 2, 2012. Her visit was part of the TriWizard Program, a global-learning initiative linking students in the United States and Israel. Evergreen Honored at Annual Dallas Morning News Journalism Day The Evergreen was recognized at the Annual Dallas Morning News Journalism Day for the 2011–12 school year. Senior Jordan Rudner and sophomore Laura Arnold captured first-place honors for their work in News Reporting and Short Feature, respectively. In addition, sophomores Joseph Middleman and Lizzy D'Apice received honorable mention laurels for Sports Reporting. Senior Grace Park also earned honorable mention recognition for Review and Graphics Portfolio, while Rudner was cited with honorable mention honors for Column Portfolio.

Greenhill Welcomes New Head of Upper School Greenhill would like to welcome Laura Ross, new Head of Upper School. Laura came to Greenhill from St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin where she was the Director of College Counseling for the past seven years. Laura is a graduate of Wesleyan University, where she earned a B.A. in Religion while participating on the varsity soccer team. She later earned an M.A. in Educational Administration and Student Affairs from Stanford University. While at Stanford, Laura New Head of Upper School also served as a graduate intern Laura Ross in the Stanford Undergraduate Admissions Office. A former colleague described Laura as his “best hire ever at St. Stephen’s.” Others have described her as a person with “strong convictions and beliefs” and “a deep thinker with the ability to reform ideas.” Laura has recently relocated to Dallas along with her husband Gregg, seven-year-old daughter Casey and four-year-old son Graham. According to Laura, her greatest accomplishment thus far is managing life as a working parent. Laura is passionate about learning new things, and on a typical Friday night you might find her cooking a great dinner for her family, as cooking relaxes her. An interesting fact about Laura is that she spent two summers backpacking around Nepal and various parts of Asia – mostly Indonesia, Singapore, Nepal and Thailand. Laura’s favorite quote is, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” from Mary Oliver’s poem The Summer Day. Greenhill is excited to have Laura as part of the Greenhill community, and as one person stated: “She is a great fit for Greenhill. She came across as a thoughtful, intelligent and caring educator who will put students first.”

Student Featured on Good Morning Texas for Camp SPARK Sophomore Blake Lieberman was featured on WFAA’s Good Morning Texas for promoting Camp SPARK, which he co-founded with his brother, Ryan. Camp SPARK teaches campers, whose ages range from 5–13, about sportsmanship in athletics as well as life.

Greenhill School Joins Global Online Academy Greenhill has been accepted into the Global Online Academy (GOA) and will offer students the opportunity to take online courses during the 2012–13 school year. This opportunity is part of Greenhill’s strategic plan to focus on global learning. The GOA is a nonprofit, global partnership of independent schools bringing intellectually challenging programs and excellent teaching online. Being a part of the GOA will provide Greenhill students with exposure to global views and ideas, ultimately encouraging them to embrace not just their local community, but the entire world.

Each year, the GOA offers a range of courses taught by faculty at member schools. The courses involve 5–7 hours per week of coursework in the form of assignments and online interactions with the teacher and other students. The students gather asynchronously because they are located in different time zones, but the software platform for the classes allows for easy sharing of ideas and materials. Greenhill students enrolling in GOA classes will receive academic credit and the grades will appear on the student’s transcript. “Online collaboration benefits our entire school,” said Chris Bigenho, Greenhill Director of Instructional Technology and the site administrator for the

program. “Students bring ideas from other cultures to their physical classrooms, enriching classroom discussions. Likewise, teachers can learn new instructional techniques and find inspiration as they talk with other online faculty, making them more effective in the classroom.” Greenhill is thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity to engage with and learn from peers around the world.

This is Angie’s first year to make the band and Calvin’s third year to make the All-State Band. Greenhill Students’ Film Wins SXSW Greenhill congratulates juniors Andrew Fields and Brian Broder and senior Daniel Matyas for their win at South by Southwest. Their film, Boom, won Best Film in the Texas High School Shorts competition. The film was produced as part of an assignment in which they were asked to use $10 worth of objects from garage sales or thrift stores as a part of the film. This year 23 films were accepted from all Texas high school film students and seven of the 23 came from Greenhill students.

Fine Arts News, continued Three Greenhill Students and One Alumnae Earn National YoungArts Honors Greenhill seniors Bronsin Ablon, Russell Houston, Daniel Matyas and recent graduate Margot Beauchamp ’11 were selected as 2012 National YoungArts award winners by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. Ablon earned honors for Visual Arts while Beauchamp and Matyas both garnered accolades for their work in Photography. Houston was recognized for his achievement in Music Instrumental. The four Greenhill students were among 597 winners from 39 states in this year’s competition that featured over 5,000 applications. Greenhill Students to Participate at Dallas Arts Fair Select students from Greenhill, led by art teacher Corbin Doyle, participated in a live printmaking demonstration at the Dallas Arts Fair led by Justin Israels of Pace Prints and artist John Alexander. Monoprints created during the demonstration were sold and a portion of proceeds benefited Greenhill School. Senior Cellist Wins Eleventh Annual Lynn Harrell Concerto Competition Greenhill senior Russell Houston won first place at the Eleventh Annual Lynn Harrell Concerto Competition on April 14, 2012. The competition is sponsored by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and as the first place winner, Russell received a $3,500 scholarship and an opportunity to play with the DSO in June 2013.

Sophomore Performs at 2012 Dallas Symphonic Festival Greenhill sophomore Angie Kang had the distinction of performing at the 2012 Dallas Symphonic Festival in concert with the Meadows Symphony Orchestra at SMU’s Caruth Auditorium. Language News Students Excel at Area C Latin Competition Fifteen Upper and Middle School students excelled at the Texas State Junior Classic hosted by Hebron High School in Carrollton.

Middle School Students Post Success at National Latin Exam Over 30 seventh- and eighth-graders garnered honors at the National Latin Exams.

Students Finish Fifth at TSJCL State Convention Fourteen Middle School students competed at the Texas State Junior Classical League State Convention at Tom C. Clark High School in San Antonio, where the Latin team finished fifth out of 21 middle schools.

Senior Earns National Spanish Exam Scholarship Award Greenhill senior Natalie Fine was awarded the National Spanish Exam Scholarship Award after achieving first place in Level III. After being selected to compete for the Senior Scholarship Award, Fine ultimately won a $1,000 stipend, which is intended to contribute to her first year college expenses.

Greenhill Debate has a Record Season Winning more than 100 awards at 25 tournaments, Greenhill School Debate Team had their best season in more than 20 years of competing. Various members were rewarded for their talents. Seniors Sankalp Banerjee, Lyall Stuart and Azhar Unwala were honored with the degree of Premier Distinction, which is National Forensic Leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s highest degree of student membership. The degree of Premier Distinction reflects sustained excellence in classroom activities, competition rounds and service projects. Additionally, Stuart and Unwala received the David P. Baker Award at the National Debate Coaches Association National Championships. The award, which is named after the former St. Markâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s School of Texas debate coach, is given to the policy debate team that has amassed the most points by their success in national circuit tournaments during the regular debate season.

Miller Shines at 1001 Great Ideas Showcase in Houston Greenhill librarian Katie Beth Miller presented “Instant Graphic Novel Gratification” at the 1001 Great Ideas Showcase in Houston at the Texas Library Association Conference. Miller’s presentation featured creative ways that she promotes the graphic novel collection, including booktalks, book trailers, email promotions, blogging, Glogster signs and QR codes – all of which have increased the circulation of this collection in the Montgomery Library. Van Wart Selected for Prestigious NSTA Fellowship Program Greenhill Middle School teacher Megan Van Wart has been selected as one of 52 Texas science teachers for the prestigious Fellowship Program at the NSTA New Science Teacher Academy. With the selection, Van Wart will participate in a year-long professional development program designed to help promote quality science teaching, enhance teacher confidence and classroom excellence and improve teacher content knowledge. Bigenho Honored by American Educational Research Association Greenhill School’s Director of Educational Technology, Chris Bigenho, recently received the Best Graduate Student Paper Award from the American Educational Research Association’s (AERA) Applied Research in Virtual Environments for Learning (ARVEL) interest group. His paper evaluates student readiness for learning in non-traditional game-based environments.

Lowen and Mercurio Awarded Teacher of the Year by Texas Legends Greenhill faculty members David Lowen and Andy Mercurio received the Teacher of the Year Awards from the Texas Legends, the local NBA D-league team, on April 7, 2012. McGill Featured in ESPN High School Magazine Greenhill sophomore Logan McGill is featured in the ESPN High School Magazine spring issue for its cover story, “Under 18 High School Athletes Who are Doing Remarkable Things On and Off the Field.” McGill, who was diagnosed with scoliosis as an eighth-grader, is featured for her work in raising over $70,000 for the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, where she received her treatment and back brace.

Brandt Garners Scholastic All-American Accolades Greenhill senior Claire Brandt garnered Scholastic All-American honors, which was recently announced by USA Swimming. A 2011 High School All-American in four events, Brandt qualified for the Olympic Trials during the summer of 2011 in both the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke. Spring Sports Recap The Greenhill Athletics Department had much to celebrate on the field during the 2011–2012 season. The Hornets also celebrated the accomplishments of their individual student-athletes. This past year, the Hornets had three student-athletes sign National Letters of Intent: seniors Cyerra Holmes (girls lacrosse, Stanford University), Claire Brandt (swimming, Texas A&M University) and Blake Pruitt (girls soccer, University of Arkansas). In addition, the Hornets had five other athletes announce their intentions to continue their careers at the collegiate level: senior Katie Sheinfeld (girls soccer, Purdue University), Katie Litman (girls basketball, Williams College), Samantha Fine (field hockey, Tufts University), Brandon “Tre” Dean (boys basketball, Susquehanna University) and Devin Bullock (football, Occidental College). Boys Track & Field Senior Eric Klein put together a record-setting performance at the SPC Spring Championships as the Greenhill senior earned gold medal recognition in the shot put with a throw of 52–9. The Hornets’ thrower also finished second overall in the discus en route to earned allconference honors in both events. Boys Tennis The Greenhill boys tennis team captured silver medal honors at the 2012 SPC Spring Championships after the Hornets dropped a hard-fought 3–2 decision to Kinkaid School. The setback for the Hornets snapped an impressive 35-match winning streak. The Hornets capped off the season with an 11–1 overall record, including a 7–0 mark in SPC regular-season counter action. Senior Clint Golman earned all-conference recognition for the third straight season while sophomore Grant Solomon became a back-to-back all-conference award winner. Girls Tennis The Greenhill girls tennis team finished third overall at the 2012 SPC Spring Championships after the Hornets routed Trinity Valley School in the third-place match. With one senior on the roster, the Hornets put together an impressive 12–4–1 overall record, including a 5–2 mark in SPC regular-season counter matches.

As a team, the Hornets posted a third-place showing at the SPC Spring Championships after accumulating 83.5 points. The Hornets had a pair of relay teams capture all-conference honors in the 4x100 meters (senior Max McKamy, sophomore Tre Albritten, junior Regis Johnson and sophomore Jalen Sharp), as well as the 4x800 meters (junior Ryan Duffy, seniors Langston Johnson, Ivan Kumamoto and Brian Knig ). Girls Track & Field Logan McGill garnered all-conference laurels for the second time in her young career as the Hornet sophomore earned first-place honors in the high jump after clearing a height of 5–0. As a team, the Hornets posted a total score of 31 points to finish sixth at the SPC Spring Championships.

Baseball The Hornets concluded the 2012 spring season with an 11–10 overall record and were the top seed in the SPC Division II Tournament. Senior Nick Brienzi became a first-time all-conference award winner at first base and pitcher for the Hornets.

Boys Golf The Hornets posted a third-place showing at the SPC Spring Championships in The Woodlands, Texas, following a 36-hole team score of 614 (305–309). Freshman Reed Russ tied for fourth overall with a championship score of 148 (73–75) while sophomore Ryan Gupta finished eighth with a score of 153 (76–77). it at a table of Greenhill pre-kindergarten or kindergarten students and you cannot help but notice their energy and inquisitiveness. They will inundate you with questions. “Who are you?” “Why are you here?” If you ask them a question, be prepared for a deluge of responses. “What is your favorite part of the school day?”

“Recess!” “Math!” “Number scrolls!” “Paper airplanes!” “Art!” “Why do you like recess?” “Because you get to play. Today at recess, we made a seesaw. There was a dead tree resting on two pieces of wood, so we worked together to move one of the pieces of wood to make the seesaw. It came up THIS high.” Let’s think about what it took to build this seesaw. This child used effective social interaction and teamwork to move the wood. Basic physics helped her understand that the tree would move up and down, and experimentation determined the best place for the focal point of the seesaw. But does she know that she used all of those skills? No. To her, she was simply playing. Greenhill’s early childhood program for four-, five- and six-year-olds may seem like play to the students, but the carefully and deliberately planned activities lay a strong foundation for success throughout their educational careers.

Focus on the Young Child “Early childhood is at the forefront of educational research and study today,” said Kim Barnes, Head of Early Childhood. “According to Dr. James Heckman, an economics professor and advocate for investment in early childhood education, the early years of education provide a greater impact on a child’s life than any other educational period.” The focus on early childhood is rooted in developmentallyappropriate learning. The Gesell Institute for Human Development recently completed a national study of childhood development to assess if children are developing faster today than they did in the past. Greenhill School participated in the study, which was based on the developmental schedules created by Arnold Gesell in 1925. It revealed that the rate at which children reach developmental milestones has not changed over an 85year time span. For example, 4 ½-year-old children will be able to draw a square, but most of them will not be able to draw a triangle until they are 5 ½ years old. The ability to understand and draw shapes relates directly to a child’s ability to learn. A child must be able to draw a triangle in order to understand the angled lines in letters like K or A. The driving principles behind Greenhill’s pre-kindergarten and kindergarten program have always been based in the idea that development and learning are integrated, and that children reach milestones at regular intervals. As a result, the faculty already has a rich curriculum based on authentic experiences that foster wonder, exploration

and discovery. Even before the release of the Gesell study, Greenhill used the best methods to teach and motivate students. “I remember baking banana bread,” said Scott Barnes ’12, who started at Greenhill in pre-kindergarten. “I loved learning how to bake. Our measurements were a little off, so our bread came out a bit weird, but it tasted good.” Molly Pluss, a senior, remembers several other integrated projects in her pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes. “We made waffles in the shape of butterflies, and we also had to eat the letters in our alphabet soup so that they formed words as we ate them,” she said.

Love of Learning

ne of the key elements of a Greenhill education is about establishing a love of learning. This sense of intellectual excitement and commitment paves the way for continued growth throughout our lives, yet foundations for this behavior start very young. Greenhill’s early childhood program instills such values as motivation, critical thinking, curiosity, communal and self-awareness, and self-control. Experimentation and problem solving serve as the underpinning of the pre-k and kindergarten academic curriculum. “Experiments help students understand themselves as learners,” said Natalia Hernandez, Director of Curricular Programs. “Understanding yourself as a learner provides groundwork for establishing selfconfidence and a sense of self as an individual. In a recent study, one of the greatest predictors of success in college and professional life for Upper School students is how well the student knows her skills, abilities and beliefs, which starts during those first years of schooling.” Another critical byproduct of experimentation and play is motivation. “Motivation is not binary,” Hernandez said. “It depends on many factors. One of the keys to early childhood education is recognizing how children find motivation and then identifying activities to develop that motivation. Strong motivation sparks success throughout their educational years.”

This quest to stimulate motivation is found every day in the pre-k and kindergarten classrooms. Through integrated learning units and a cross-pollination of ideas, students are encouraged to make connections across subjects through hands-on activities, engaging the senses and fostering a sense of innovation at work. Last spring, after reading the book Stuff, by Margie Palatini and Noah Z. Jones, the kindergarten students in Janice LaMendola’s class were inspired to raise money to plant a tree outside their classroom. The students, with LaMendola’s guidance, developed a plan to raise donations by creating a recycling museum and asking visitors (parents) for nominal donations. As they developed the museum exhibits, the students learned about the impact of their actions on the earth (citizenship) and how to reuse products to make new objects (fine motor skills, math, art). They also practiced speaking skills as docents for visitors to the museum. At the end of the project, the students raised $52 dollars for their tree. “It was great for the students to

see how their hard work paid off,” said LaMendola. “They had to learn how to ask for money, without telling people to give it to them. They also had to work as a group to accomplish their goal. And, because they came up with the idea for the museum, they all enthusiastically contributed to the project.” The ability to see a multi-layered project through from beginning to end, as they did in LaMendola’s class, serves students well as they progress through Middle and Upper School. “By the time a student reaches Upper School, their studies become specialized,” said Laura Ross, Head of Upper School. “However, the ability to see how subjects intersect is still important and we establish that skill early in the pre-kindergarten/ kindergarten program because of the integrated studies.”

Welcome Mrs. Hernandez Natalia R. Hernandez joined Greenhill in July 2012 as Director of Curricular Programs, bringing with her a wealth of curricular experience. Most recently, she focused on elementary education in her roles as Head of Lower School at Pine Crest School in Florida and Elementary Principal at Colegio Nueva Granada (CNG) in Bogota, Colombia. While at CNG, she led efforts to align the curriculum from kindergarten through twelfth grade, giving her an in-depth view of the foundational power of the first few years of schooling. “Those first few years establish not only the academic, but the social groundwork that a student builds on for the rest of his or her life.”

In addition to managing curriculum at Greenhill, Natalia is currently pursuing her doctorate in educational leadership, policy and organizations at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education and Human Development. She is looking forward to bringing what she learns to Greenhill classrooms.

When not in the classroom, you can find Natalia playing the piano while her dog, a Shih Tzu named Bach sits at her feet. The elaborate, imaginative playing in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten also develops a child’s self-control. According to an editorial in the Dallas Morning News by Sandra Aamodt and Sam Want, two leading professors of neuroscience, self-control is twice as important as intelligence in predicting academic success. Language classes also contribute to self-control by forcing the child to determine which language the listener will understand. As a result, all students starting in pre-kindergarten take Spanish three times a week. Before starting first grade, all students know basic words, phrases and greetings.

How to Go to School “All of our students are bright, so academic learning comes easily to most of them,” said Kim Barnes. “As a result, one of our primary goals is teaching students how to go to school and how to be good citizens. We teach them how to respect each other, how to work together, and even how to stand in line and wait their turn.”

Two of the most successful citizenship programs in the early childhood division focus on anti-bullying behavior. The first program, “You Can’t Say You Can’t Play,” teaches children that they need to learn how to interact with and work together with their peers, instilling an early respect for community, while acknowledging and appreciating personal differences and individuality. The second program, “Eye to Eye Talks,” teaches conflict resolution. If a student has a conflict with another student, they must follow a step-by-step framework that encourages logical and rational resolution. Rather than telling a teacher, they must sit down, look each other in the eyes and discuss the problem. The main goal of the program is to give each student a voice in the classroom and plant the early seeds of self-advocacy and social intuition.

Spotlight on Primer: The Gift of Time In setting the foundation, some students benefit from extra time to develop social and emotional skills. Greenhill’s 42-year-old primer program offers that gift of time. The primer year takes place after kindergarten and before first grade. The curriculum focuses on active, experiential learning to strengthen academic skills and round-out social, emotional and physical development. The students determine the curriculum based on their needs and interests, but the Primer Pie Contest is a perennial favorite. The students learn writing as they invite departments across campus to participate, social studies as they discuss the popular vote to determine the winner, and math as they tally the results. By the time the primer students reach first grade, they are prepared for a wider spectrum of challenges, both academically and socially.

“These programs establish social norms and a sense of justice that they then bring into the Lower School,” said Michael Simpson, Head of Lower School. “Students create the culture in a school. The pre-k and kindergarten program establishes a healthy atmosphere for the students that they carry with them as they continue through Greenhill.”

Whole Child View

he early childhood faculty members have a unique relationship with their students. They exude warmth and openness which permeates their classrooms, encouraging student exploration and risk-taking. “Parents always tell us that they like the close relationships between their children and the teachers,” said Simpson. “The ability to form relationships with teachers starts in pre-kindergarten, and it results in an excellent environment for learning.” Also, unlike teachers in Middle or Upper School, they are with their students for the majority of the day, giving them a full picture of the child’s academic abilities, and social and physical development. Early childhood practitioners refer to this as the whole child view. The teachers really know their students and understand what they need to learn and grow accordingly. “Our teachers do an excellent job of reading the kids,” said Barnes. “Sometimes that means that the parent-teacher conferences are not always pleasant, especially if a child has some areas that he needs to work on. But, ultimately, we want what is best for the child, and we are willing to work with both the child and the parents to make improvements.”

Moving on to Lower, Middle and Upper School The foundation set forth in the early childhood years serves to prepare pre-k and kindergarten students for the journey ahead. Yet regardless of age, it is important to concentrate on the child’s needs of today. By focusing on the developmental fundamentals of the moment, the child is naturally prepared for the next phase.

The developmentally-appropriate teaching and learning established in the early years continues as a student moves through Lower, Middle and Upper School. Both the faculty and the students recognize the benefits provided by the program. “The pre-k/kindergarten program gets students ready,” said Simpson. “When they arrive at Lower School, they are ready to read. Ready to do math. If they are ready, then they will be able to master the basic skills that we teach.” He also appreciates the openmindedness cultivated in the early childhood classes. “Filling in blanks can be limiting. But with open-ended projects, we teach children that there are many solutions to one problem, which we build on in Lower School. Even with math, we want students to ask ‘Why?’ Why did you do it that way? Why did you get that solution?” Palmer recognizes that by the time a student reaches Middle School, he or she is “school wise,” and has a genuine love for learning. “The fact that students arrive in Middle School beginning to learn how to study and with a positive outlook on school allows us to focus additionally on creating a safe space for students as they move through the emotional and physical changes of adolescence.”

n Upper School, Ross values the sense of community and the collaboration established in the early childhood classes. “When our students are at their best, they are working collaboratively. Group work comes naturally to them because they have been doing it for so many years. They also help and support each other. They might be competitive, but only with themselves. They genuinely take pride in the accomplishments of their peers.” For Upper School students and recent graduates who started at Greenhill in pre-k or k in the late 1990s, they overwhelmingly recall the friendships that they formed, and many are still close friends with those same students today. But they also recognize other skills that they gained. “I learned how to talk to teachers,” said Clint Golman ’12. “In fact, I still keep in touch with the teachers who are here on campus.” Jessica Garcia ’12 valued the diversity of her peer group. “You get exposed to lots of different types of people that are all your age,” she said.

Growing Up at Greenhill By Rachel D’Apice ’12 When I first became a Greenhill Hornet, I was three years old. I am now 18 years old and can remember something about every year I have spent here.

Early Years are the Learning Years “I like math, because it’s fun and good for your brain,” a kindergartener recently shared. Another said, “I like music class because I like to dance.” Ask any pre-kindergarten or kindergarten student and you will receive a similar response that evokes enthusiasm and joy. Their love of learning is infectious. While their curiosity may come naturally, the early childhood classes at Greenhill purposefully and deliberately build their sense of wonder, sense of self and sense of others, giving them a solid foundation on which to continue learning, and growing, throughout their lives.

My preschool years at Greenhill were precious to me. I will always remember playing in the indoor loft every day with my friends, wearing the flower-girl dress for the Nutcracker, creating our pumpkin costumes for Halloween, making apple sauce with my class, and being line leader for the day. I became best friends with my teachers and I made friends that I still have today. I still get to see my kindergarten teacher, Ms. Barnes, as well as my Level One teaching fellow and 3rd grade teacher, Ms. Webster (who is now known as Mrs. Hall). I treasure them all. In preschool, I was given so many opportunities to explore different interests: art classes, music classes, school plays and physical education activities. These were some of the highlights of my experience. In preschool, everything we did was a different way for us to engage our minds and to spur our individual creativity. Preschool prepared me for the rest of my school career at Greenhill by teaching me to open my mind to different possibilities. Instead of shying away from activities I had not done before or interacting with people I did not really know, Greenhill taught me how to be brave and curious about new experiences and new people. I never came home from school feeling like my teacher was mean, or did not listen to what I said. Everyone accepted me for who I was, and supported me in what I wanted to do.

I have noticed that many students who have been here since preschool currently hold leadership positions in high school. Some of those leadership positions include: president of the Honor Council, varsity football captains, AP artists, senior class president, social justice club presidents, varsity volleyball captain, president of the Greenhill Choir and members of the Cum Laude Society. I am secretary of the Student Council, president of two clubs, “Views” editor on the School’s newspaper and a captain of the girls varsity basketball team. Growing up at Greenhill, I have learned some life lessons that cannot be taught in a classroom or in a less diverse school. The diverse community here has taught me to be accepting and tolerant. The teachers have inspired me to do and be my best, and my peers have encouraged me to stand for what I believe in. The School has given me opportunities to lead, and to rise to the occasion. Greenhill not only prepared me for college academics, but how to succeed in our diverse world. Now that I am about to graduate, I have come to realize that Greenhill is a special place that is hard to match. I would not trade a single year that I have spent here, and it all started in preschool.

Alumni in Education Maggie Fulton ’07 As a fifth-generation teacher, you might think education is in Maggie Fulton’s blood. The granddaughter of Greenhill co-founders Bernard and Helen Fulton, she is no stranger to working in the classroom. Maggie and her sister, Melissa Fulton ’07, recently graduated from Texas Christian University with a Masters in Education. They also completed their undergrad work at TCU. This fall, Maggie will begin teaching kindergarten at Pink Elementary in Frisco, Texas and Melissa will teach second grade at St. John’s Episcopal School in Dallas. During her college years, Maggie spent time working in Fort Worth ISD as a first grade teacher and she taught fourth grade at the International School of the Hague in the Netherlands. She also worked at The da Vinci School in Dallas during the last ten years, starting as a teaching assistant and moving up to lead classroom teacher. “Working at da Vinci has been one of the best things for me as a teacher. It is so much fun to see students grow up and change,” she said. “I’ve seen students go from the 18-monthold class to the kindergarten class and now, some of my first students are old enough to be teacher’s helpers.” Maggie’s Greenhill teachers made her realize how much she wanted to teach. Though she credits her grandfather as her biggest influence, she recalls the enthusiasm that Greenhill faculty have for their course work and their students. “Corbin Doyle is my role model because he showed me the value of teachers building supportive and positive relationships with their students,” she said. “Berkeley Gillentine and Scott Cotton also showed me the importance of setting high expectations and challenging your students.” Maggie is excited to take on her new role as a full-time kindergarten teacher. She is motivated by the responsibility of building a foundation for her students while incorporating play-based, exploratory learning.

“As a kindergarten teacher, it is my job to set my students up to be successful throughout their academic career by building a strong academic base,” she said. “You know that saying, ‘All the things I needed to learn, I learned in kindergarten’? I think that is really true.”

Matt Rush ’92 Matt Rush not only found his inspiration to teach while at Greenhill, but he also had the opportunity to work with some of those influential teachers who shaped his path. Currently, Matt serves as the Assistant Head of School and Head of Middle School at Cannon School in Concord, North Carolina. Matt came to Greenhill in first grade and after graduation attended Texas A&M University for his undergraduate work. Then he came back to Greenhill. During his time working on the Hill, he served in various roles including teaching fellow, Middle School teacher, advisor, baseball and football coach, and as the Middle School Evergreen sponsor. He left Greenhill to pursue his masters degree from Columbia University’s Klingenstein program and most recently he earned his doctorate from Vanderbilt University. While working at Greenhill, Matt vividly recalls the time he spent working with Greenhill Legends like Karen Hagood, Henry Paolissi, Becky Daniels and Tom Perryman ’81. He even filled the shoes of one of his beloved teachers, Joan McDole, after her retirement. He remembers the challenge of calling former teachers by their first names. “It was definitely hard to transition with salutations of the faculty who helped shaped me as a student and for whom I still have so much respect,” he said. “And while they had become my colleagues, they continued to shape me as an educator during my seven years as a faculty member there.” Bob Murphy stood out to Matt as an instrumental force in his education. “He embodied all that an independent school educator should be: coach, teacher, advisor, father figure and unbiased ear. While it helped that he spoke the language of baseball with me, Bob showed an adolescent

Dana takes cues from some of her most favorite Greenhill teachers. Her relationship with Peggy Turlington has continued since graduation and Dana credits her with making her feel refreshed and happy. She remembers Gwen Baird’s patience with her when learning sight words in first grade. “She thankfully didn’t call on me to read words behind the red door until the end of the year when I actually had learned how to read,” she said. young man that it was possible to be smart, athletic, organized and respected all at once. These are things that 15 to 18-year-olds fail to see amid the years of both trying to be cool and feeling invincible.” The many lessons that he has learned throughout his time at Greenhill and in his continuing education, has allowed him a better understanding of the independent school world. He sees it through the lens of an educator, but also as a former student. At Cannon, the faculty has worked to perfect their foundation approach for junior kindergarten and kindergarten students. The Lower School centers on the concept of “play” from junior kindergarten through 4th, which prepares students for exploration and deeper intellectual risk-taking as they progress through Middle and Upper School. Students in these grades are encouraged to learn through activities that are appropriate to their ages and individual stages of development. “When they come to me in Middle School, they are prepared to have fun and be challenged intellectually,” said Matt. “I think all of my students know that I really care about them as people and will do whatever I can to help.”

Dana Baum ’07 After graduating from the University of Michigan with an English degree, Dana Baum joined Teach for America hoping to be placed in a high school classroom. “I wanted to teach high school students how to use writing as a tool for communication and deep thought.” But there was a different plan in place for her. Dana was assigned to an elementary school in Wilmington, Delaware. Last year, she taught second grade and kindergarten. “I developed such a deep love for my students and for instilling the importance of mastery. I wanted to ensure that every student was able to master the fundamental skills they needed to read and problem solve. It is this challenge that inspires me: to be the teacher that my students and their parents can count on – to never give up and ensure excellence in everything [my students] do.”

In her kindergarten classroom, Dana witnesses that growth occurs in unique and different ways for each student. “These young students feel everything and those feelings dictate their actions. I spent the year working with each of them to match their feelings with their actions in an attempt to create a sense of accountability,” she said. In one instance, that growth was dramatic and heartwarming. “I had a student who never spoke. She could not recognize any letters, could not relate any letters with their appropriate sounds, and did not know how to count objects.” Through one-on-one tutoring, house visits and many family meetings, the student blossomed. “She would come and sit next to me in the cafeteria and make addition sentences with her carrots. I’ll never forget when she told me, ‘Ms. Baum, isn’t it so cool how math is everywhere?,’” said Dana. She cherishes the personal and educational gains of her students because “it puts them in a position to be successful and to soak up the many learning opportunities around them each day.” “Kindergarten creates a strong foundation for learning because it is the prime opportunity for students to learn how to respectfully interact with others, how to read, and how to problem solve,” she said. “I love being a kindergarten teacher because I am tasked with the responsibility of teaching my students, not only to recognize that the world is at their fingertips, but they are able to hold it in their hands.”

Dear Fellow Hornets, I am humbled to be the newly inducted Board President of the Greenhill School Alumni Association. With more than 3,800 alumni, the Alumni Association is a talented and dynamic group of individuals residing all over the world. The mission of the Alumni Association is: “To foster communications and further the mission of Greenhill School through the enrichment of the alumni, support of the School, and service to the community.” With the help of a dedicated board, I look forward to furthering this mission during my term. This past summer, we had the pleasure of welcoming the Class of 2012. This senior class became the first – and only – alumni class to meet 100% participation in giving to the Greenhill Fund. They have challenged all reunion classes to do the same and show alumni support for the School. Commencement was exciting not only to celebrate this outstanding group but also to recognize this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Tom Perryman ’81. The Dallas Trending Topics Luncheon series also concluded for the year with a presentation in May by Paul Markowitz, President and CEO of Senior Living Specialists. This luncheon series will continue next year, so please stay tuned for a complete schedule and join us to learn about interesting topics and network with other Greenhill alumni. Looking ahead, Greenhill’s theme for the 2012–2013 school year is Action: Make a Difference. Be the Difference. The School will be guiding students on how to be active citizens. Likewise, we as alumni can, and should, serve as examples to current students on how to engage as citizens of the School, the community and indeed, the world. The Alumni Board will be looking for opportunities to plan activities that will allow alumni and current students to “make a difference” together. We have already had several exciting events this year. We saw many of you for Homecoming weekend, October 5–6, and at our NYC Alumni gathering in October. Our regular networking luncheons will continue as well as holiday events and the annual alumni soccer game. Stay tuned for more details. In addition, based on feedback we received from the Alumni Attitudes Study conducted this spring (a process that many of you graciously participated in), the Alumni Board has voted to launch Alumni Weekend. The inaugural Alumni Weekend will take place April 26–27 at Greenhill and will be a signature event for the Alumni Association. Alumni News Tom Perryman ’81 Receives Distinguished Alumni Award The Alumni Association has named Tom Perryman ’81 as the 2012 recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award for his 25 years of dedicated service to Greenhill students, faculty and the greater Dallas community. Houston Reunion An intimate group gathered in Houston in early April for a reunion at the home of Harvin and Janet Hadelman Moore ’80. Alumni from the ’80s, ’90s and ’00s gathered to catch up and reminisce about their time on the Hill. We have nearly 100 alumni living and working in the Houston area. 2nd Annual Golf Event Rain and wind delayed our second annual Alumni Golf outing this year, but the day finally came in mid-March. A group of 40 Greenhill alumni, parents and friends gathered at Brookhaven Country Club in Dallas to hit the links. San Francisco Reunion After almost 10 years since the last visit, Greenhill came to the Bay Area in early February for a reunion at the Press Club in San Francisco. Alumni from the classes of ’52 through ’10 joined us for a casual evening of wine tasting and storytelling. More than 30 guests attended and connected. We heard from many that they were unaware of the large number of alumni living in the San Francisco area. Some drove from 30 miles away to visit. Family Fun Day The second annual Family Fun Day brought lots of friendly alumni faces to the Hill. The Phillips Family Athletic Center was open for free play in the gyms and in the aerobic room, which was set up with soft gymnastic mats and foam toys. Members from the Class of 2014 painted faces and a bounce house was set up outside for fun in the sun. Our campus catering company, Sage Dining, provided a lunch spread complete with a build-your-own ice cream sundae station.

1976 Dave Meltzer wrote, “Cathy and I are enjoying retirement in the Midwest. Dan, our oldest, coached a youth baseball league in Vietnam this summer and interned at a law firm in Hanoi. He gave a two-week seminar in Beijing on the “psychology of leadership” before returning to his senior year at Harvard, where he manages the club baseball team. Ryan was with Amazon for the summer and will continue his sideline as a teaching fellow in the computer science department at Harvard, where he is a junior. Young Nathan had his National Public Radio debut this spring playing a $5 million loaner violin in a solo performance on From the Top. His YouTube channel has about 10,000 visits a month from listeners in 108 countries. Nathan will begin middle school in the fall, with an early release accommodation for his violin studies at Indiana University. We followed him to music camp in Quebec this summer and will continue with him to Carnegie Hall, Brazil and Argentina next spring.”

Lisa Buckner ’80 was awarded with Life Membership in the Geophysical Society of Houston.

1980 Taylor Winston was recently appointed by the Alaska State Legislature to be the Executive Director of the Alaska Office for Victims’ Rights. The state-wide agency provides representation for crime victims to ensure that their constitutional and statutory rights are being upheld and to assist them through the criminal justice process. Taylor had served as an Assistant District Attorney for the Department of Law for 13 years, during which time she supervised the sexual offense unit for six years. She primarily prosecuted rapes, sexual abuse of children, domestic violence and murder cases during her tenure as a prosecutor. This new opportunity allows her to serve victims more directly and utilize her years of experience.

Lisa Buckner was awarded with Life Membership in the Geophysical Society of Houston for “voluntarily rendered exceptionally meritorious service” to the Society. Lisa is the Seismic Data Loading Team Lead and a seismic data processor at Hess Corporation. She has 27 years of seismic data processing industry experience. She received a B.S. in Geophysics from Texas A&M University and a M.S. in Geophysics from the University of Houston.

1982 Frank Bracken wrote, “After 30 years out of the Metroplex, I am finally back home. My wife, Erica, and I moved to Fort Worth in December when I joined Lonestar Resources as Chief Executive Officer. The added bonus is that I get to spend more time with my oldest son, Corbin, who is a junior at TCU.”

My daughter, Megan, started her third year at Greenhill this fall as a freshman (ugh!), and on May 26, I had the blessing of getting engaged to Kristen Nevils on the big island of Hawaii.”

Richard Ellman and his wife, Tiffanee, are co-owners of Oak in the Design District of Dallas. Since opening in December 2011, Oak has received a four star rating from Modern Luxury Dallas and a four star rating from Leslie Brenner with The Dallas Morning News. Most recently, in Modern Luxury’s Special Restaurant Edition 2012, Oak was named “Restaurant of the Year.” In July, Oak partnered with John Paul Valverde (owner of Campo) to open a new casual concept restaurant, Bowery, on McKinney Avenue. Colin Rule wrote, “We’re on our eighth year out here in Silicon Valley. I’ve spun some technology out of eBay/PayPal to start a new company called Modria.com doing online dispute resolution. We’re even doing some work with Joey Lane ’85. The boys are getting bigger (Andrew’s Bar Mitzvah was this summer), and Cheryl is buzzing around the country promoting her cookbook (ripecookbook.com), which has gotten rave reviews in the LA Times and WSJ. 1990 John Wilson wrote, “If you are planning a trip to Vancouver or Whistler up here in British Columbia, please stop by for a visit. There aren’t many folks using the word y’all up here. My Canadian kids need to learn it! That’s right, eh?” Florian Simbeck wrote, “After breaking up the comedy duo Erkan & Stefan in which I played the part of Stefan (after ten years of career), I experienced a major slump and it was time to re-invent myself. Now I am happy to say that for 2012 and 2013 the comedy show Komiker has picked me up for the next 14 episodes as one of four starring comedians. The show is partly filmed in front of a studio audience as well as on set location. Also, I will be filming the non-fictional entertainment show Immo Fight which focuses on real estate. On weekends, I am touring with my standup-comedy-show LOL. It is fun to be busy again.” Zach Luterman is continuing to compete in duathlon and triathlon championships around the country. His 2012 race highlights include the Texas State Duathlon, Ironman Vineman in Sonoma, California and the Toyota U.S. Open Olympic Distance Championship. His daughter, Ariana, is a Greenhill student and has been competing for five seasons. She will race in more than a dozen adult competitions before the end of 2012. The twelveyear-old has launched a national campaign to raise awareness and donations for Vogel Alcove (Dallas’ only free comprehensive early childhood education program for homeless children). In my new position as Vice President of Corporate Partnerships, I am responsible for managing and selling sponsorships for the Dallas Stars and American Airlines Center. I am excited to get back to the Stars and AAC, where I previously worked for six years while the Rangers and Stars were owned by the same person. Additionally, a second generation of Raskins will attend Greenhill. My daughter, Mya, started pre-kindergarten there in the fall. She is very excited to go the same school that I attended.”

Chris Guilds wrote, “My wife, son and I recently moved from our apartment [downtown] to a new house on the outskirts of Prague to make room for our second child, who is due at the beginning of September. We are very excited about expecting our first baby due this November.”

1997 Carolyn Ley Thomas wrote, “My husband, Jake, and I celebrated the birth of our first child, Abigail Colette Thomas, on February 6, 2012 in Dallas. She is developing quite a personality! 1998 Ashley Harris Johnston and her husband, Coyt, welcomed their second daughter, Reagan, on January 2, 2012. Andrew Bradt is an Assistant Professor of Law at University of California–Berkeley School of Law. He teaches introductory and advanced courses in Civil Procedure and Conflict of Laws. Marc Wallenstein recently started a new job at the Department of Defense in Washington, D.C. Marc is a Prosecutor in the Office of the Chief Prosecutor of Military Commissions, which is the part of the government that prosecutes alien belligerents who are accused of war crimes and terrorism offenses. Marc is “totally stoked.”

Jennifer Carroll wrote, “I’m currently living in Seattle and teaching at the University of Washington. I’ve advanced to candidacy in my concurrent Ph.D./M.P.H. program in the Departments of Anthropology and Epidemiology – finally! It has taken a long time! My research focuses on public health interventions and for IV drug use, addiction, HIV and TB – particularly in the Post-Soviet sphere. This year, I am extremely proud to have been part of the organizing committee behind the second annual Health in Transition Conference on Ethnographies of Biomedicine in Post-Socialist Europe, sponsored by the Romanian Academy of Sciences in Bucharest, Romania (www.hitconference.org). In the fall, I will be spending several months in Kiev, Ukraine, as a fellow of the IREX Embassy Policy Specialist Program on Health Reform, researching patient adherence to tuberculosis treatment protocols. Following this, I will be relocating to the city of L’vov (in western Ukraine) for a period of twelve months. There, I will be conducting ethnographic research on heroin addiction and the role of methadone therapy in the daily lives of IV drug users in the region. Ukraine is a beautiful place, and L’vov especially so. Anyone passing through Eastern Europe during the next year is encouraged to visit.” Israel Nosnik wrote, “Lots of good news this summer! I just completed my residency in urology in New York and my fiancée, Rachel Umansky, and I are moving to Chicago in July where I will be starting a fellowship in pediatric urology at the new Lurie Children’s Hospital/Northwestern University. Rachel will continue her job in advertising sales for The Financial Times. We were married on Labor Day weekend in Dallas.”

2001 Byron Sanders won the TEDxSMU auditions in the spring and will be a local presenter at TEDxSMU in December. He will serve on the 2012–2013 Greenhill School Alumni Board. Byron was also selected as one of 25 under-40 leaders in Dallas to serve on Mayor Rawlings’s inaugural Star Council. The council will work to engage the talent and energy of young professionals in the development of strategic areas of the city of Dallas.

Joe Trombello is moving back to Addison in August to begin a one-year clinical internship at The University of Texas at Dallas’ Counseling Center. Upon completing his internship and finishing his dissertation, Joe will graduate with his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from UCLA in the summer of 2013.

2003 Leot Louise Chen married Vaughn Joseph Taylor, a PGA Tour golfer, on December 10, 2011. They were married at sunset in front of the French cloisters at the One & Only Ocean Club in Nassau, Bahamas. Bridesmaids included Brooke Hollimon and Tracy Heller and Alex Chalfant ’02 served as an usher. Also in attendance were Brian Portner and Steven Nosnik ’02.

Jared Scheib wrote, “On September 30, my feature documentary film, The Mayor, premiered at the Dallas Museum of Art in Horchow Auditorium as part of the 25th annual Dallas Video Festival. I was so honored to attend alongside Sam, the Mayor himself. Nearly four years after this journey began, I was ecstatic to bring it all home. Check out the trailer at http://themayormovie.com. The film has had outstanding receptions at festivals in Israel, New Zealand and here in the States, including the distinction of Honorable Mention in consideration for Best Southern Film at the Little Rock Film Festival. 2005 Shawn Hiner-Leamon wrote, “I am going to IE Business School in Madrid, Spain this fall to obtain my M.B.A. It is a 13-month program, so I will graduate in December of 2013.” Nathan Baum wrote, “I graduated from The University of Texas School of Law in May and recently moved back to Dallas full-time. In September, I will start working at Fulbright & Jaworski in downtown Dallas. I will work in the firm’s litigation department. During my time off, I will travel to Korea and Japan with David Wolfish before he heads off to Harvard Business School. It is great to be back in Dallas, and I seem to run into Greenhill people everywhere I go.”

Evan Hathaway wrote, “Since 2010, I was living in Washington, D.C. and working for the prime contractor building the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project – a $2.3 billion extension of the D.C. Metro system that will extend service to Dulles Airport by 2018. As the first phase of construction is currently winding down, I took a position as the Deputy Environmental, Safety, and Health Manager with the same company at the Autostrada Transilvania Project in western Romania this past April. The $2.2 billion 415-kilometer motorway, the first modern motorway for Romania, will connect central cities such as Brasov and ClujNapoca, while navigating through the Carpathian Mountains, to Oradea near the Hungarian border. The motorway will enhance travel not only for Romanians, but attract other European travelers to the region as well. It is a challenging project and one that I am very excited about seeing through until completion. I got married in February 2012 to my wonderful wife, Brittany. She has moved to Oradea, Romania with me and we find the Romanian people and culture very engaging. We are constantly fascinated by all the different sites, sounds, and customs of the locals. Romania is a great homebase for travelling in the region and we hope to meet up with other alumni living in Europe throughout the coming months.”

2012 Nick Petrocchi wrote, “I started working my first undergraduate job this past July at Epic, a healthcare software provider in Verona, just 15 minutes outside of Madison, Wisconsin. I work in Implementation Services, a division that travels around the country to meet with Epic’s customers to install and customize their software based on their needs so that they can lead and manage the way they provide healthcare to their patients. It’s a very exciting and innovative place that’s been getting a lot of positive media attention recently. To learn more about Epic, check out the New York Times article from earlier this year.”

Dear Friends, As I conclude my second year as Chair of the Board of Trustees, it gives me great pleasure to acknowledge and thank so many members of the Greenhill community who have helped us honor and support the mission of the School. I have had the privilege to work with an incredible board of 43 volunteers and a dedicated and capable administration led by our Head of School Scott Griggs. As we do each year, this edition of The Hill celebrates the accomplishments of the 2011–2012 school year. The following pages highlight the breadth of support Greenhill has received over the past year from trustees, alumni, current and former parents, grandparents and friends of the School. The support we received this year was impressive, and the programs supported are vital to the health of the School. I want to personally thank each of you for your commitment to the Greenhill Fund, Endowed Funds, the Library and the Parents’ Association fundraising efforts in addition to those of you who have quietly stepped up to help resource our strategic planning initiatives. Leading much of this effort was our Development Chair from the Board of Trustees Peter Kraus and our Parents’ Association President Camille Owens. Their tireless and outstanding leadership inspired our community to reach for ever-higher goals, evident in the stories and participation lists that follow. As we welcome our new Chair of the Board, Peter Kraus, we look to continue to implement many of the goals of our Strategic Plan, building on our successes of the past few years. We look forward to working with the Greenhill community as we focus on the three primary areas of concentration highlighted in the Plan: Dedication to Excellence in Program and People, Focus on Financial Sustainability, and Stewardship of the Campus Master Plan. Endowment Fund Descriptions The perpetual earnings generated from endowment funds play a critical role in shaping the future of the School by supporting the faculty, students, programs and facilities that define and enhance the Greenhill experience. We are thankful for all of the support we have received in the past and look forward to working with families and friends to continue to build this valuable resource. Below is a list of all donor restricted and board designated named endowment funds. We welcome and encourage additional gifts to all donor restricted funds.

GENERAL ENDOWMENT FUNDS General Endowment Fund Supports a variety of purposes including the programmatic and operational needs of the School. Phillip G. Foote Endowment Fund Established in 2003 to honor Phil Foote, Greenhill’s second Headmaster (1976–1992) and former Head of Lower and Middle School (1969–1976). In 2009, Greenhill alumni completed a special campaign in support of this Fund to name the Lower School in his honor. Headmaster’s Discretionary Fund Established in 2012 by the M.B. and Edna Zale Foundation and the Leo and Bobbie Fields Family in honor of the faculty, trustees, students, parents and grandparents who have built and sustained Greenhill as a center of learning excellence.

FINANCIAL AID FUNDS General Endowment for Financial Aid Supports the annual general financial aid budget, ensuring that every deserving student can afford a Greenhill education. Ruth Agnich Financial Aid Fund Established in 1975 in memory of Ruth Agnich, mother of William ’61 and grandmother of Robert ’94, Bruce ’87 and Barbara. Andrew Family Financial Aid Fund Established in 2000 by Diane Buchanan & Richard Andrew and Edith & Edward J. Andrew, parents and grandparents, respectively, of Caitlin ’05, Cameron ’09 and Carolyn ’11. Scott Buchanan Memorial Scholarship Fund Established in 1982 in memory of Scott Buchanan ’90, son of former faculty member Dr. H. Ray Buchanan and his wife, Carole. A monetary stipend from this fund accompanies the Estelle Dickens Service to Greenhill Award given annually to a graduating senior.

Dr. Anson L. Clark Memorial Financial Aid Fund Established in 1980 in honor of Dr. Anson L. Clark, a Dallas philanthropist, engineer, physician, banker, oilman and generous Greenhill supporter. Michael L. and Carol B. Davis Financial Aid Fund Established in 2004 by Carol and Michael Davis ’84, this fund supports economically disadvantaged students of color, with a preference for Upper School students who are members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas. Jacob Earle Financial Aid Fund Established in 1995 in memory of Jacob Earle by his classmates and parents, Sandra Earle and Randy Earle. Christine Eastus Scholarship Fund Established in 2005 by alumni, students, parents and faculty to honor the 35-year Greenhill career of Christine Eastus (1975–2000), Upper School English teacher and department chair. This fund supports an Upper School student with promise in the humanities. Edward E. Ford Foundation Financial Aid Fund Established through a challenge grant from the Edward E. Ford Foundation in 2005, this fund provides financial aid to Upper School students from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas. Ronnie Freeman Financial Aid Fund Established in 1954 in memory of Middle School student Ronnie Freeman by her parents, Norman and Ernestine Halff Freeman. Fulton Family Financial Aid Fund Established in 1976 upon the retirement of founding Headmaster Bernard Fulton (1950–1976). Gifts made in memory of Mr. Fulton on the occasion of his passing on June 14, 2009, supported this fund. Greenhill Employee Legends Financial Aid Fund Established in 2006, the Greenhill Board of Trustees makes a $1,000 gift in honor of employees who become Greenhill Legends – those who have served the School for 25 years. Jane and Wes Kittleman Financial Aid Fund Established in 1983 by members of the Trim family to honor the careers of Jane and Wes Kittleman, teachers at Greenhill for 13 and 22 years respectively, by providing financial aid support for an Upper School student. David Warren Leatherbury Financial Aid Fund Established in 2002 by Pat Villareal and Tom Leatherbury, former Board Chair (2000–2002), in honor of Scott A. Griggs, Greenhill’s fourth Head of School. The fund is named in memory of a family member who died while serving in Vietnam. Jennifer Goodnight Maalouf Financial Aid Fund Established in 1999 in memory of Jennifer Goodnight Maalouf ’86 by Margaret & Jim Goodnight, Susan Griffiths ’83, Evan Griffiths, friends and classmates.

Parents’ Association Financial Aid Fund Established in 1994 to provide financial aid to students. Harold and Mae Star Financial Aid Fund Established in 1973 through a bequest from Mae Star, grandmother of Harold Star, III ’70 and Meri-Kay Star ’73, this fund supports financial aid for Middle School students. An additional generous gift was made to this fund in 2012 from the Estate of Harold Star, Jr. Kathy Wells Memorial Financial Aid Fund Established in 1994 in memory of Kathy Wells, a physical education and motor room teacher from 1979–1993, this fund provides financial aid support for a returning Lower School student. Zale Foundation Financial Aid Fund Established in 1978 by the William and Sylvia Zale Foundation to support financial aid for deserving Middle School students.

Arun Stewart Memorial Faculty Enrichment Fund Established in 2010 by Sunita & Tony Stewart in memory of their son, Arun Stewart ’07, to provide grants for language faculty who are interested in pursuing professional and personal development opportunities through the Trustee Fellowship Grant program. Trustee Fellowship Grant Endowment Fund Established in 1989 by the Board of Trustees to provide grants for faculty pursuing professional and personal development opportunities. This board designated fund is closed to new gifts; however, new gifts are accepted to the donor restricted funds listed above which support of the Trustee Grant Program.

Kim Williams Service Fund Established in 2006 in memory of Kim Williams ’92, to support community service activities and projects.

FACILITIES FUNDS General Endowment for Facilities Established in 2006 during the Great Expectations Campaign, the fund provides support for the maintenance of the Lower School and Upper School expansion. Athletic Complex Endowment Fund Established in 1999 through proceeds from the Parents’ Association Gala, the fund provides support for maintenance of the Phillips Family Athletic Center. Tennis Maintenance Endowment Fund Established in 1998 by the Board of Trustees during the New Century Fund campaign, the fund provides support for tennis maintenance of the Phillips Family Athletic Center. This board designated fund is closed to new gifts.

Elaine Velvin Faculty Tuition Assistance Fund Established in 2008 by members of the Alumni Board, friends, and family, to honor the 26-year career of Elaine Velvin, Greenhill administrator and teacher.

Why I Give By Kathryn Hamm ’87 In anticipation of celebrating her 25-year reunion, Kathryn Hamm ’87 reflected on her time on the Hill during the ’70s and ’80s. “The values I hold dear were reflected in my Greenhill experience, where we often made due, but excelled in spite of those limitations ... including classes in portables and having to wear the used, hand-me-down boys’ baseball uniforms as our ‘new’ varsity softball uniforms – all while still managing to learn and win SPC Championships,” she said. Hamm gives to Greenhill to pay it backward. “I give to Greenhill because of everything it gave to me. I often feel as if I am paying it backward – to all of those who shaped my character, inspired and nurtured my love of learning. I’m also paying it forward – to all of those students I’ll never know, but who will be wellserved by the privilege of a Greenhill education,” she said. “As much as I love living in Washington, D.C., one of my regrets is that we won’t have the chance to send our son to Greenhill. So instead, I tell him stories of peacocks and friendships, of swing sets and Big Toys, of growing pains and spreading wings.” “We give a little forward in hopes that Greenhill can make a difference for a little boy like ours, and we give a little backward in honor of the girl I once was, a girl who thrived in the Hornet’s nest.”
