SCHOOL PROFILE 3

As the Dallas area continues to grow, so does interest in Greenhill admissions from prospective students and families. The 2017-2018 school year marks the first time that current families received financial aid awards with re-enrollment and new families received their financial aid awards with their admission decisions. This move to simultaneous decisions was in agreement with our Dallas consortium, the Independent School Admission Association of Dallas (ISAAD), and is in keeping with our mission. This change benefits both our applicant families and our enrollment management strategy. We are proud that we continue to be need-blind in our admission process and that we meet 100% of demonstrated need. As of August 2016, we received 794 completed applications and 265 financial aid applications. Additional statistics are below.

DEFINING CORE VALUES 4

A faculty-student task force gathered at the end of last year and throughout the summer to iterate, define, and renew the long-standing core principles that drive our culture and actions. The definitions that the Greenhill community pledges to uphold are as follows:

HONOR

RESPECT

COMPASSION

We live with honor through actions that model and promote honesty, fairness, and integrity, regardless of consequence, criticism, or the promise of praise.

We live with respect through actions that affirm the inherent value in oneself, others, places, events, and the environment.

We live with compassion through actions that demonstrate kindness and empathy for the physical and emotional well-being of others.

Assistant Head of School Tom Perryman ’81 describes how our core values build character.

5

I believe that through our work here — whether we are opening the world of reading to a five-year-old, lining the playing fields for our student-athletes, or advocating on behalf of our seniors applying to college… All of our work here represents a sacred opportunity — an opportunity to change the world, one kid at a time, one interaction at a time. We in schools understand and accept that we are all role models, and our character in executing our duties, and in the way we treat one another, must be worthy of this sacred trust. Through our character, we will either live up to or fail this opportunity. Somebody someday will write the story of this moment at Greenhill School. Let them say that we were genuine, authentic, hardworking, kind, and fair. Let them say that we stood up to injustice and called out falsehood. Let them say that we acted with honor, respect, and compassion. Let them say that we changed the world with our love—and our individual and institutional character.

THE GRIGGS ERA 2000 - 2018

The years marked by the tenure of Head of School Scott Griggs will mean many things to those fortunate enough to have known him and the true meaning of a Greenhill School education. The stories and memories told in his wake will be as varied and vast as the individuals who comprise our community. We will say that Scott Griggs led us with vision and drive to improve campus facilities beyond Founder Bernard Fulton’s hopeful aspirations. We will say that he advised his administration to “be courageous,” leading them with honesty, authenticity, and integrity. We will say that he pursued resolute excellence in attracting and retaining a strong and talented faculty body. He inspired loyalty to serve the School’s mission. He valued and stood behind his employees, first and foremost. Ultimately, he will be upheld as an individual of extraordinary character to be immortalized as Greenhill’s fourth Head of School. When reflecting on Scott Griggs’ culminating year, Assistant Head of School Tom Perryman ’81 said, “I have had the unique and real privilege of knowing all four of our Heads of School. Each has possessed distinctive and powerful gifts. I cannot imagine a school in the world luckier than we have been. Scott Griggs has earned his place among this incredible — and I mean really incredible — pantheon of leaders. What is history, after all, if not a series of human stories? And this institution’s history has been indelibly shaped for the good by the leadership of Scott Griggs. As he guides us on his last lap around the sun as our leader, I want to thank Scott for all he has done to guide this school to new heights, ever closer to the perfection of our mission. What a Herculean task his job is... and what a stellar job he has done.” The following pages illustrate Scott's remarkable 18 years of leadership at Greenhill School.

Reflections on the Griggs Era from members of the Greenhill Community

“ Scott lives and breathes Greenhill’s mission 24/7. He inspires his faculty and admin team, and with his strong commitment and leadership, he maintains great morale and keeps great faculty and administrators at the School. He has a burning sense of fairness and equity, and instills that in the faculty and students. By building a great team and a safe and vibrant home for all of our community, he has allowed Greenhill to become a truly great institution.”

PETER KRAUS Board Chair, 2012-2014

The Hill | ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017

“ I have been involved as an alumnus of Greenhill School since I graduated in 1986, well before I was a parent or in any leadership role. Now, after chairing a campaign and serving as a Trustee for more than twenty years, I can say with utter confidence that Scott’s leadership has made the School an even more exceptional learning environment from when I was a student here. Paramount to this is Scott’s unyielding drive for excellence, and his ability to keep the mission and ethos of the School at the forefront of the decision-making process. He and I have always been aligned in our goals for the School and we’ve accomplished great things, consistently honoring Bernard Fulton’s vision. It is my fervent hope that he would be proud of how far we have come.”

9

E. PIERCE MARSHALL, JR. ’86 Trustee, Chair of the Building Community Campaign

“ Scott is the last Head of School to have spent quality time with my father, Bernard Fulton. Up until his passing in 2009, I know they spoke often and developed a wonderful friendship. Scott was always so kind to include him in his thoughts. Bernard mentored him, consoled him in hard times, celebrated success in good times, and shared his vision for the future of Greenhill. Bernard was thrilled with where the School was going—from campus development to enrollment growth to fostering a well-rounded education of academics, arts, and athletics.”

MOLLY FULTON SEELIGSON ’60 Lifetime Trustee

10

“ When I think of Scott, I think of his courage. He has always been 100% focused on doing the right thing even when that is the harder route. He holds honesty and integrity above all; you never doubt he’s being straight with you. Scott leads with authority, but is never authoritarian. He has developed at Greenhill an ethic of constant improvement generated by intentionally collaborative processes. How beneficial it has been to everyone—administration, department chairs, faculty and staff—to be engaged in the creation of this great school. We are stronger together, and we know that is because of Scott.”

RUSTY JAGGERS Lifetime Trustee, Board Chair, 2006-2008

“ Throughout my time as a student, alumnus, and parent at Greenhill, I’ve seen three Heads of School. What resonates with me is Scott’s commitment to the mission. I’ve always been struck by Scott’s ability to really listen—to the community, to the teachers, to students, and families—and create an environment that is inclusive and welcoming for all.”

MICHAEL WALDMAN ’98 Alumni Board President, 2016-2018

“ One of the many remarkable accomplishments of Scott’s tenure has been his unwavering commitment to recruiting and retaining faculty and staff of the highest caliber. Scott has always understood that a critically important asset of our School is the quality and talent of our faculty, and he has worked tirelessly to hire exceptional people, while also ensuring that every one of them possessed a genuine and deep respect for Greenhill’s core principles and its mission.”

BRUCE SOSTEK Board Chair, 2017-2019

The Hill | ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017

“ Scott leads with clear expectations and trust. Having worked with him at two schools (at Landon School for four years, and now 17 years at Greenhill), I have always found him to be confident and smart, but supremely modest and completely secure in his own skin. Scott has firmly established Greenhill as a nationally recognized top-tiered independent school, while ensuring that our students graduate, not only with a dynamic, first-rate education, but also with a keen sense of social justice.

“ Scott recognizes the importance of relationships within our school community, and he frequently references Bernard Fulton’s early adoption of differentiation— engaging each student in whatever way that individual needs at the time. He is also a strong proponent and fierce advocate for doing what is right, equitable, and inclusive.”

SUSAN PALMER Head of Middle School

“ I admire that Scott chose to lead Greenhill first by culture and by the Fulton legacy—not by trying to keep up with the expectations of the private school world of Dallas. By leaning into our culture and amplifying it, Scott led us to differentiate in a unique and important way.”

BYRON SANDERS ’01 Alumni Board Member

The Hill | ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017

“ Since 2000, Greenhill has been a second home to me. Through coaching volleyball and participating in the Carter Fellowship Program last year, my decision to teach solidified. I owe a lot of that to my dad. I witnessed his dedication and hard work every day of my childhood and beyond. There was never any doubt that he wanted to be here and that he loved his job. Now, as I commit to my first full teaching job, I’m inspired to work as hard as he has.”

13

NATE GRIGGS ’09 Middle School Math Teacher

“ I appreciate that Scott encourages others to lead alongside him. He recognizes people’s strengths then sets them free to lead others.”

MICHAEL SIMPSON Head of Lower School

“ What I really love and admire about Scott is his terrific sense of humor and his obvious joy as a school leader. Amongst the Heads of Schools of Dallas, Scott has made a point to get to know our colleagues and has helped shape a collegial environment within the variety of schools that Dallas offers.”

“ This is what a school is supposed to be.” An interview with Scott Griggs on eighteen years as Head of School Tell us about your early years. Growing up in rural Ohio, I first saw the difference between the public and private education experience when I attended Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. A few of my friends had gone to private school and I could see the difference in their preparation and experience. After college, I worked in Centre’s admission office and visited schools across the country. I remember driving onto beautiful campuses and walking through their halls; you could tell there was a greater sense of purpose. You could feel it. I realized then that this is what a school is supposed to be—children who are interested and motivated, talented faculty who love working with their students, and supportive parents who care about education.

The Hill | ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017

What are the steps that led you to Greenhill? After working at Centre for two years, I began my teaching career at Columbus Academy in Ohio. I taught Middle School math, Upper School science, and coached basketball and baseball for six years. I immediately fell in love with what I was doing, and that’s when I knew I had found my field. I had great mentors that encouraged my growth and continued to challenge me. When I left Columbus Academy, I was helping with college counseling while continuing to teach and coach. I moved on to Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland because I was interested in the Mid-Atlantic region of our country. I was the Director of College Counseling, taught one class of physics, and was the head varsity basketball coach. After six years at Landon, I became the Head of Upper School at Collegiate School in Richmond, Virginia where I stayed for seven years. Near the end of my tenure, I had put my name in a few head searches, yet, I was feeling good about Collegiate. My son Nate had started school and was happy there. I wasn't looking to leave, but then I got the call about Greenhill.

What were your first impressions of Greenhill in 2000?

Tell us about your friendship with Bernard Fulton.

I loved the feel of this School. I loved the people. There was no singular path required by students for success. Rather, I felt an immediate celebration of individuality and differences. My predecessor, Peter Briggs, had elevated the academic profile and implemented high expectations, and I was fortunate to enter at a time when the School felt successful and stable.

Some of the most gratifying moments I had as Head were the times I spent with Bernard Fulton. My relationship with Bernard was one that I will forever cherish and value immensely. We built a strong and close friendship over the years. We had lots of connections from being small town boys and would often joke about whose town was smaller. His mind was sharp until the very end. We would have lunch, and I loved hearing through his words how proud he was of what we’ve accomplished. I can’t imagine starting a school and the challenges he faced. He was a visionary. He was one of my heroes for sure.

What were some of your first initiatives? The School was in a strong position when I got here, but I wanted to take the sense of community and relationships to a new level. I wanted to really get to know people. I think some faculty and staff were surprised when I sat down with them and started chatting. I think the faculty and staff appreciated— and needed—a more personal, collaborative approach. My first few years were also spent understanding the culture, defining best practices, and setting the tone for a new strategic plan. I asked a lot of questions those first few years.

Describe a favorite memory or two. Annually, I love Founders’ Day with every member of the school community together in Phillips Gym. The feel of that assembly is special: hearing student speeches at the podium, seeing all our students linking arms, singing Best Friends, reflecting on our history. It is always a special day. Another great memory was the groundbreaking ceremony before building MPAC in 2014. It was a beautiful spring morning and there was a feeling that something big was coming. We were about to do something truly momentous that would change the trajectory of the School. The vision was there, on the horizon, and we were about to fulfill many aspirations and goals. I think everyone had that feeling. Less than two years later, that vision was fulfilled. The night of the Grand Opening of the MPAC was one of my proudest moments. There was a sense of awe and amazement—a big wow factor— for what we had accomplished.

As Head, what do you think is the key to a successful tenure? You have to find the fit. It’s about connections and relationships, learning and growth, inspiration and fulfillment. If you’re working for what you believe in, the inspiration is natural. If you’re force-fitting the school for the job, it won’t last. I feel very fortunate to have found that fit in Greenhill. The job needs to be an extension of who you are and what you believe in. I believe in the people and mission of this School.

NEXT STEP

SCOTT GRIGGS NAMED EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ISAS In July, Scott will start the next chapter of his career as the Executive Director of Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS). Having participated with the organization for the last 18 years, he has a deep understanding of the depth and impact of ISAS’s reach on its 90 schools. Scott hopes to enhance growth opportunities and continually challenge the organization to serve its members with best practices, ideas, and perspectives. Scott says, “There is not a more challenging time to be a school leader, and it is imperative that ISAS provide the support and mentorship needed for all of its member schools' success.”

GREENHILL SCHOOL ANNOUNCES NEW HEAD OF SCHOOL Lee J. Hark to join the Greenhill Community on July 1, 2018 22

In June of 2017, the Greenhill School Board of Trustees and the Head of School Search Committee were delighted to announce the unanimous selection and appointment of Lee J. Hark as Greenhill’s fifth Head of School, effective July 1, 2018. Lee will join us from Durham Academy in Durham, North Carolina, where he served as Upper School Director from 2008-2015 and Associate Head of School since 2014. In accepting this appointment, Lee said, “From the outset, it was apparent that Greenhill is deeply committed to its mission and values, and I am incredibly honored to have been selected to be the next Head of School. Spending time on campus, I was impressed by the talent and dedication of the faculty and administration, and the genuine love and commitment every member of the community felt for what is obviously one of the premier schools in the nation. As a lifelong educator, my goal has been to serve as a Head of School in a community that is innovative and inspiring, and Greenhill is that and so much more. My family and I are thrilled to be joining the Greenhill community and look forward to the challenge of leading Greenhill to even greater heights.”

SEARCH COMMITTEE Lee brings an impressive background in independent school education to Greenhill. He attended the highly regarded Darlington School in Rome, Georgia, and received his B.A. in English with honors from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1992. In 1997, Lee earned an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from the University of Georgia and did doctoral work in Social Foundations of Education at the University of Virginia. Search Committee Co-Chairs Rusty Jaggers and Bruce Sostek stated, “While at Greenhill, Lee impressed those he met with his thoughtful and reflective answers to questions, his attentive listening to the comments of others, his view of learning as a lifelong collaborative process, and his ability to approach serious topics with respect and consideration for all, while maintaining a keen sense of humor along the way. These characteristics and qualities, among others, were clearly evident to all who spent time with him during his visit.” Former Board Chair Will E. Rose ’85 added, “Lee has a distinguished background in teaching and a deep commitment to education. He is recognized as a person of integrity and is passionate about instilling in our children the joy of learning and a pursuit of excellence. We are excited to have Lee as our next leader of Greenhill School.” The Hill | ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017

Lee began his career as a teacher at Darlington School in 1993, and over the years has served in a variety of leadership positions, including admissions and student activities and as Dean of Students, Coordinator of Faculty Recruitment, Upper School Director and Associate Head of School. Lee has also stayed in the classroom, currently co-teaching a class at Durham Academy titled “The Mission- Driven Life” and has remained connected to students, having taught English and coached boys and girls tennis at the varsity level. In addition to Durham Academy, he has experience at other independent schools including Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, CT and Providence Day School in Charlotte, NC. In each school community, Lee has made a tremendous impact through his dedication to improving the lives of students and faculty, playing important roles in curriculum development, diversity and inclusion, faculty evaluation and professional growth, strategic planning, and school accreditation. It is evident in each case that Lee has helped move the school

forward in culture and curriculum, and that he remains on the forefront of innovation in the field of education. The School is also pleased to welcome Lee’s wife Marianne and their three children, Eliza, Jane, and Ben. Marianne works in public health and prevention and currently serves as program director of Orange Partnership for Alcohol and Drug Free Youth in Chapel Hill, NC. The children will enroll at Greenhill in grades 4, 6, and 9. While we welcome Lee and his family to our school, we also want to recognize how fortunate we are to continue to be the beneficiaries of the outstanding leadership of Scott Griggs throughout the 2017-18 school year. We are grateful for Scott’s long-standing and continued commitment to Greenhill, and for his willingness to work closely with the Board, the administration, and Lee to guarantee a seamless transition for our community. Thanks to Scott’s steadfast leadership over the past 18 years, Lee will assume his new role from a position of great strength and positive momentum. The Board also recognizes those whose guidance and commitment to this process enabled the identification and recruitment of the best possible candidate as Scott’s successor. Lee’s appointment is the culmination of an extensive and thorough search that began last fall and included the consideration of a number of highly qualified candidates for the role. We extend deep appreciation to the Search Committee, whose commitment to and enthusiasm for our School are compelling and contagious; we all owe them a debt of gratitude. In addition, we thank the many members of our community — faculty, parents, and alumni — who participated in this process. That involvement made a world of difference and was an outstanding testament to our strong and vibrant community. We look forward to welcoming the Harks to our Greenhill family, to perpetuating Bernard Fulton’s legacy and to embracing the exciting work still ahead as we continue to meet the needs of our students today, while also ensuring they will enter the world well prepared to serve and lead throughout their lives.

When I concluded my third year as Board Chair and passed the torch to Bruce Sostek, I was inspired by the great communal effort that it takes to honor and carry forth the mission of Greenhill School. The following pages highlight the breadth and support Greenhill received over the 2016-2017 year from my fellow Trustees, current and former parents, alumni, grandparents and friends of the School. The support we received was impressive —most especially the record-breaking participation numbers for Greenhill Fund and the closing of the most ambitious campaign in Greenhill history, the Building Community Campaign. BY THE NUMBERS

With the incredible success of the Building Community Campaign in our wake, the 2016-2017 school year was a year to transition from campaign mode to supporting operational goals. Foremost among these was a focus on increased participation resulting in the best participation numbers in Greenhill Fund history! Other goals included renewed engagement and volunteerism across all constituencies. The Advancement Office led and assisted with more than 40 events for annual and major donors, campaign stewardship, current parents, alumni, current and former board members, grandparents, faculty/staff, volunteers, and friends. We continue to be inspired by the spirit and dedication of the Greenhill community and the momentous accomplishments we can achieve when we work together toward a common cause.

The Greenhill Fund exceeded its goal in all divisions, raising more than $1.7 million for our School. In addition, thanks to our incredible volunteer dedication, we reached 100% participation across Lower School and 97% participation among all current parents, the highest in Greenhill’s history. We commend the leadership of Development Committee Co-Chairs Debbie Andres and E. Pierce Marshall, Jr. ’86 for their dedication and support. The outstanding Greenhill Fund leadership team, chaired by Leslie and David Benners and Brett and Lester Levy, Jr. ’79, was instrumental in these fundraising efforts. The following dedicated and diligent division team leaders, grade, and room captains guaranteed the success of the Greenhill Fund in participation and total dollars raised. Their tireless efforts are truly appreciated.

PENNIES TO SHARE Pennies to Share to Show you Care is the service learning project of our youngest students. Throughout the year, our prekindergarteners held art shows, charging 100 pennies for their work. At the end of the year, they counted their earnings and bought stuffed animals to give to firefighters as a way to comfort children. The Hill | ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017

RESPECTING ALL BELIEFS Thank you to Imam Spendim Nadzaku, Rabbi Nancy Kasten, Sashi Kejriwal, and Pastor Robert Purvey, who visited campus last March and shared insightful and inspiring narratives at Greenhill’s Interfaith Panel during Upper School assembly. Each panelist spoke from the perspective of their religion with the common ground of respecting all beliefs. “We need to open ourselves and seek to understand each other,” one said.

Through our Alumni Giving Day challenge, donors had the opportunity to make an even greater impact with their philanthropy. This effort was about participation. Every student who attends Greenhill benefits from these alumni contributions just as we benefitted when we were students. A gift to the Greenhill Fund offers a chance to give back and pay it forward. ~ Michael Waldman ’98 Alumni Board President

ALUMNI GIVING DAY – 2016-2017

ALUMNI GIVING DAY Alumni make a difference in just one day!

On May 16, 2017, we challenged alumni to make a gift in recognition of Giving Day. The results were amazing. We received 92 gifts that day with an average gift size of $100. Donations came from graduates in the classes of 1967-2011. We also reached a total participation of 26%, which is our highest percentage of alumni participation since our founding year of 1950!

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR ALUMNI TO GIVE?

26

%

Total Giving Participation

Donating to Greenhill is important to me because the school and community taught me so much as a young person. I learned to be curious, bring my own perspectives to discussion, lead with creativity, and to do things outside of my comfort zone. In addition, the community is filled with caring people that develop the whole human (not just the brain). At Greenhill, I was empowered to develop into the best version of myself. This foundation has enabled me to set high goals, and push myself to continue to take on more responsibility, which has benefited me beyond the world of academia. Greenhill was the best investment that my parents could have made in my education, and by donating I am able to say thank you and give back to the community. ~ Brooke Hollimon Ramsey ’03

So many of the good things in my life today have flowed from the education I received at Greenhill. Chief among these things is the ability to think critically, to challenge the status quo, and to leverage my privilege to make change in the world on the issues that are closest to my heart. Greenhill helped me launch into a life of action and of activism. I continue to support Greenhill because I am deeply grateful for that gift. ~ Aimee Boone Cunningham ’97

I attribute my perseverence and wellroundedness in great part to my experiences at Greenhill. The culture fosters trustworthy, caring, reliable people; our world can’t have enough of them. The respect for individuals and integrity that Greenhill instills are invaluable no matter the careers that its graduates pursue. ~ Lori Henika ’96

GREENHILL ALUMNI WEEKEND April 21-22, 2017

64

Thank you to all of the alumni who shared this special weekend together! It was truly a pleasure to welcome you all back to campus on such a beautiful weekend. Alumni from classes ending in '2' and '7' traveled from as far as California, New York, Hong Kong, and Canada to be in attendance. The weekend events included our All-Alumni Party at Trinity Groves, campus tours, and gatherings for individual reunion classes. Current and former faculty, along with Greenhill Legends, joined the fun as well. Each year, the Alumni Office coordinates a concentrated weekend to celebrate and connect, both for reunion year classes and for all alumni. We look forward to celebrating the classes ending in '3' and '8' during Alumni Weekend 2018 on April 20-21, 2018! If you are interested in serving on your class reunion committee or have questions, please contact Katie Young at youngka@greenhill.org

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD – 2016-2017

E. PIERCE MARSHALL, JR. ’86 Recipient of the 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award

At Greenhill’s 66th Commencement Ceremony, the 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award was given to E. Pierce Marshall, Jr. ’86. Pierce has served Greenhill for more than 20 years, initially joining the Board of Trustees in 1996 and later assuming leadership roles including Development Committee Co-Chair and Chair of the Building Community Campaign. Pierce made an astounding personal and family commitment, designating gifts totaling $21,225,000 from the Marshall Heritage Foundation to the Building Community Campaign. Alumni Board President Michael Waldman ’98 presented the award, saying “Pierce exhibits integrity and a demonstrated commitment through an interest in bettering the lives of Greenhill students for decades to come. His deeds and actions reflect the importance of his education, pride, and loyalty to Greenhill. As Campaign Chair of the Building Community Campaign, he steered the campaign from inception to completion. Paramount to this campaign is the architecturally magnificent Marshall Family Performing Arts Center, which has provided state-of-the-art performance and learning spaces to showcase the myriad talents of the community. Mr. Marshall also guided the renovation of Crossman Hall and the addition of two new athletic fields. None of these campus enhancements would have been possible without the generosity and leadership of Pierce Marshall.” The Distinguished Alumni Award honors graduates whose outstanding character, accomplishments, and service embody the characteristics and spirit of Greenhill’s mission of service and leadership in our diverse global society.

BESTOWING HONORS The end of May brings a culminating, celebratory air to campus. WHY WE LOVE GREENHILL The Buchanan/Andrew Family

Diane and Rick served on the board during Scott Griggs’ early years, and their sons, Nate and Cameron, have been lifelong friends as well. We reached out to them to reflect on how Scott’s influence shaped their Greenhill experience. What do you love about Greenhill? The Greenhill experience offers excellent academics with a strong focus on arts and athletics as well. Students participate in a commitment to diversity, an open and accepting community, and encouragement of individuality. We are so very grateful that our family had the opportunity to be part of such an incredible community. The campus has such a warm feeling of positive energy and as a former teacher, I was always happy to see the myriad happy ways learning was taking place. How did Scott help contribute to those sentiments? In addition to his constant striving to ensure that Greenhill was on the leading edge of new educational thought and practice, Scott encouraged, and frankly insisted, that the institution deal with important social concerns. One of the seminal issues during our time at Greenhill School (which overlaps with Scott’s tenure for 12 years) was related to homosexual and transgendered people within the community. In contrast to many of the messages of the world at large, Scott worked really hard to help Greenhill become a community where all are accepted and celebrated. In this time of accelerated gun violence in our country, Scott also presided over the effort to ensure that the Greenhill campus was safe and secure, while maintaining a culture of openness. What do you value most in his leadership style? Scott is a consensus-builder. He’s created and nurtured an environment in which students are happy, and volunteers and faculty/staff are fulfilled and appreciated.

What are his strongest attributes? Scott is an incredibly committed and knowledgeable educator and administrator. He’s in demand all over the country for his expertise in these areas and yet he maintains a down-toearth, grounded style. In the eighteen years he has served this community, he has encountered extreme highs and lows. He has the fortitude and resilience to handle hard times, while focusing on innovation to lead us toward the good times. What will he be most remembered for? His Halloween costumes! [kidding]. He’ll be remembered as being a real presence on campus — being seen and accessible — knowing the students and supporting the faculty and staff in really positive ways. He also presided over the two largest campaigns in the School’s history. Diane served as co-chair of the Great Expectations campaign and was consistently impressed by and grateful for his leadership and ability to share the vision with donors. Do you have any favorite memories of Scott? I love that for the first few years Scott was at Greenhill, he taught a math class in the Upper School. And during this year, his final year, he is doing it again. His desire to stay in touch with the classroom experience and with the students is so admirable. It shows what kind of person he is that this was a priority for him.

Thank you for joining us in the

excitement! 's Volunteers The success of our School depends on the generous investments of time and financial resources of every member of our community. We rely on the efforts of volunteers to help generate a united spirit in the great tradition of giving, which is so essential to Greenhill School. We want to thank our volunteers and celebrate what they do. They often serve as an extension of school messaging, part fundraiser, part public relations officer, part cheerleader. They work to cultivate connections between message and action, and inspire others toward participating in the well-being of the School.

I have been a Greenhill Fund volunteer for many years and always appreciate seeing the value—in all definitions of that word—of everyone working together toward a larger goal.
