GROWING UP THE WALL

How to grow early crops using an age-old technique

How to grow food in vertical places, on roofs and in small spaces

Jack First

Sue Fisher

“Jack is a fount of knowledge and the expert on hot beds. These ancient systems still work a treat and are just as relevant now – if not more so – than they ever were.” – Joe Swift, garden designer and TV presenter

january 2013 Green Books ISBN 978 0 85784 106 3 180mm x 138mm 128pp full colour

£9.95 pb

The author Jack First is an experienced horticulturalist who has pioneered, developed and fully tested the hot-bed methods described in this book. He works with volunteers on a large plot in Keighley, Yorkshire and is the sole supplier to his local wholefood shop of out-of-season greens, new potatoes and salads. He studied agriculture in the late 1960s, and has been involved with farming and horticulture ever since.

The ancient method of growing vegetables in hot beds, used by the Victorians and by the Romans, harnesses the natural process of decay to cultivate out-of-season crops. Jack First has revived and modernised this remarkable technique, and produces healthy vegetables at least two months earlier than conventionally grown crops. This practical, illustrated guide has everything you need to understand about how to utilise this highly productive, low-cost, year-round, eco-friendly gardening technique. Straightforward explanations and diagrams show how you too can grow early veg without fossil-fuel energy or elaborate equipment. With some stable manure (there are also alternative options), an easy-to-construct frame and a small space to build your bed, you can revolutionise your vegetable growing and be harvesting salads in March and potatoes early in April. Includes advice on specific vegetables, including varieties, and on planning your calendar for continual cropping.

Grow up! If you have limited outdoor space and would like to grow your food, this invaluable guide will help you transform previously plant-free zones into thriving, beneficial and utterly beautiful food-growing areas. This book covers: • Using a wide variety of containers, e.g. ladder allotments and growing frames, with details of how to make them • Making the most of wall boxes and hanging baskets • Creating edible roof gardens • Planning and growing crops on green roofs, including on sheds • A directory of plants suitable for vertical growing – fruit, flowers and herbs as well as vegetables – with advice on how to cultivate them. Whether you have an apartment with just a wall, windowsill, balcony or small flat roof; a school with nothing but a tarmac playground; or just a paved courtyard in your community centre, this book will get you started on a new way of growing.

Something is stirring. People around the world are deciding that the well-being of their local community and its economy lies with them. They’re people like you. They’ve had enough, and they’re rolling up their sleeves, getting together with others and doing something about it. Whether they start small or big, they’re finding that just doing stuff can transform their neighbourhoods and their lives. They’re creating innovative local food businesses, insulating homes, and initiating and investing in all manner of new enterprises. In Bristol, the mayor takes his full salary in the local currency, the Bristol Pound. In Brixton, residents are investing in and benefiting from energy generation. In Portalegre in Portgual, a new food garden outside a shopping centre has proved a catalyst for local people. The Power of Just Doing Stuff argues that this shift represents the seeds of a new economy – the answer to our urgent search for a new way forward. Communities worldwide are already modelling more local economies rooted in well-being, in entrepreneurship and in creativity. This book is packed with inspiring real-life examples and with the voices of people who are out there doing stuff. What does this mean to you? What makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up? The revival of the place you live in starts with a small group of people making the decision to do something. One of that group could be you. New Titles | Spring & Summer 2013  5

£14.95 pb

The author Charles has been growing organic vegetables commercially for 30 years, without soil cultivation. His most recent garden was an intensive acre of surfacecomposted beds, for salad leaves and a wide range of vegetables, which were sold in local shops and restaurants. He has written four books on vegetable growing, writes articles for several gardening publications, gives talks and runs courses: see www.charlesdowding.co.uk.

In this new, full-colour edition of Organic Gardening Charles Dowding shares the wealth of his experience, explaining his approach to soil and plants and revealing the range of techniques that have enabled him to grow healthy and vibrant plants for decades. His success is based on some key principles:

march 2013 Chelsea Green ISBN 978 1 60358 306 0 234mm x 156mm 240pp

£14.95 pb

• No-dig enhances soil structure and encourages healthy growth, especially when soil life is encouraged through the addition of good compost and manure. • Organic matter is best spread on the surface – just leave it on top and let the worms take it in, aerating the soil as they do so. • When starting with weedy soil there is a period of three to twelve months, depending on weed types, when the emphasis is on cleaning and improving the soil. • Using a no-dig method you can easily control weeds with just a little hand weeding or hoeing every ten days or so, when weeds are small. Based on this approach and his experience of a system of permanent, slightly raised beds, Charles shows in Organic Gardening how to grow a delicious variety of fruit and vegetables: what to choose; when to sow, plant and harvest; and how best to avoid pests and diseases.

Changeology is about influencing human behaviour for the better. It simplifies a vast body of theory and practice into six principles: buzz, hope, enabling environments, sticky solutions, ‘can do’ and the right inviter. These are explained with fascinating real-life stories and a look at the hard evidence. The book is written in an easy, accessible style, with plenty of anecdotes and stories.

We know what we want the world to be like in 40 years’s time – and what it could be like in 40 years’s time. But what do we know about what it will actually be like? Drawing on global forecasting tools and the predictions of more than 30 leading scientists, economists, futurists and other thinkers, Jørgen Randers guides us through the future he feels is most likely to emerge.
