Point of view When the Mills family moved into their home, they fell in love with the uninterrupted view of the stunning Fife coastline. The only drawback was that the Scottish climate meant they seldom got outside to enjoy it. The Mills were looking for a conservatory that would connect them with their garden and the view, while also protecting them from the elements. Their choice of design is perfect, with bi-fold doors right along the front of the room. So, when the weather is good they can open up the whole conservatory – a fantastic space for socialising with their friends. Simple – build it sideways. Rather than opting for a sunlounge with a very low pitch, the Gable End design allowed the conservatory to be tucked underneath the house windows and still give the Samsons a dramatic shape with the pitched roof. Then we built in glass-to-floor windows for a fantastic view of the garden.

Unique request Unique result Mr & Mrs Solley’s Anthracite Grey Orangerie “I didn’t want a conventional conservatory or sunroom. No, that wouldn’t have been us at all,” said Mrs Solley. “We wanted an extension to our existing living space that would be unique and stylish.”
We were more than happy to help. At CR Smith, we always create rooms that meet our customers’ needs. We talked through the options and helped the Solleys choose from our range of sunrooms, orangeries and conservatories. They had considered a sunroom, since it offered a more solid extension to their home, but felt that it would miss the airy feel and additional light that a glass roof would offer.
Thrilled with the attention to detail and perfect finishing, all the Solleys really had to do was walk in, sit back and enjoy. The result was a room they could share, whether it was over breakfast on beautiful winter mornings or with a chilled glass of wine on a warm summer evening. “This is our own personal little bit of heaven,” said Mrs Solley.
After a consultation with our designer, the perfect solution seemed to be an orangerie with a difference that would offer the best of both worlds: the large glass sides and open aspect of a conservatory with the more structured design of an orangerie roof. Compliments all round Mr & Mrs Angus’ Casement Windows When Mr and Mrs Angus decided to replace the windows in their 1930s Bearsden residence, they wanted new windows that complemented the original look and feel of their home. Although more than ready to change their 80 year old steel Crittal windows, they were passionate about retaining their style. “We love our home, and everything about it – well, other than the draughts from the old windows. From the start, CR Smith took great care to listen to our ideas and even greater attention to detail in matching the number and spacing of the ornate astragals exactly, so we kept the character of our home intact.” Of course there’s more to these beautiful windows than just elegant, sympathetic design. “Our new windows are so efficient we had to adjust our heating straight away!” said Mr Angus. “We were very aware that our old windows were draughty and cold, but even so, I was surprised – and delighted – at how much warmer our house became.” Mr and Mrs Angus were also quick to point out the slim appearance of the windows and beautiful solid oak window sills and finishes.

With a beautifully simple mechanism, this fully reversible window reverses outwards, swinging through 180˚ outwith the room, meaning it won’t get in the way of blinds, curtains or ornaments that are on the window sill. It is also commonly used in a bathroom or kitchen setting to ensure taps are not obstructed.
With its slim lines and shapely appearance, the Casement window is our most popular and versatile style. The technical make-up of the Lorimer profile means it’s the narrowest window available – a clear difference which lets in more light. Careful design, in particular the positioning of openers, means that the Casement window can suit any style of property, modern or traditional.
The Lorimer Reversible window is often used upstairs to complement Casement windows downstairs, or in flatted properties. The design of the window has a matching sculpted glazing bead on the sash to the Casement window.

to ensure that it perfectly complemented their home. To that end, our craftsmen adapted their existing extension, including re-slating the roof, for a seamless transition between old and new.
When the Eassons chose their beautiful Edwardian conservatory, it was important the project was completed on time – ready for their daughter’s wedding. They had already invited 24 guests to a garden party celebration, and the conservatory was the central space for the bride and bridesmaids to prepare.
The Eassons were blown away by the service they received from CR Smith. A stunning custom-built Edwardian conservatory was delivered in plenty of time for the wedding and provided more than enough space for their celebration. What’s more, with a Smartglass roof, wooden floors and dropped glass front, it’s a design to make the Eassons happy ever after.

Mr & Mrs Lloyd’s Gable Front Conservatory “We never used this part of the garden before the conservatory,” Mrs Lloyd explained. And naturally, we were happy to help her make the dead space come alive. The house is a period Victorian property so careful consideration was given to a conservatory style that would be sympathetic to the building. After looking at some options, a Gable Front design was chosen, with some adaptions. Standard hoppers wouldn’t have suited the house, so the windows are full height and split into four with plant-on astragals to mimic the sash and case windows. The roof is Smartglass and the tiled floor adds to the overall character. “It’s peaceful and there are no distractions. I use it as a work space and our son used it to study for his Highers.” With two As and two Bs his results were as good as the conservatory.

The principal feature of the Victorian is its multi-faceted front which gives a majestic curve. With its wide angles, the three-bell shape will give the most pronounced profile, while the five-bell model has a subtly rounded bay front with five main windows and is ideal for doors leading into your garden. Probably the best design for more traditional homes.
A new twist on an old style, the Gullwing integrates the large floor area of the Sunlounge with the elegance of the Victorian roof – great for more individuality. Note the Gullwing’s unique corner detail, where the corners facing away from the house are angled. Alternatively, a Half-Gullwing has just one shaped corner, suitable if your home has a high wall alongside it.

The Edwardian design is typified by a square or rectangular shape, straight lines with a flat front and apex roof. Like the Sunlounge, the Edwardian maximises floor space internally and offers an intricate roof style. For bungalows and other height-restricted situations, a hipped-back roof with box gutter looks fantastic.
The most versatile style, a Sunlounge can be installed just about anywhere. Also known as a Garden Room or Lean-To, it is a refreshingly understated design with a single sloped roof. It is the perfect style for bi-fold doors so you can dramatically open up your home to your garden.
Gable Front
Bespoke Design
The Gable Front design is based on a square or rectangular shape with straight lines and a roof where each side rises to the centre. The front rises to an apex and the ridge at the apex runs to the wall of the house. We can also align the pitch of the conservatory with the gable of your house and further customise the front with leading, Georgian bars or a stained glass design.

Mrs Arton’s Casement Windows Mrs Arton lives in a charming house packed with period features. However, one feature she wasn’t so keen on was the draught coming through the old sash and case windows. CR Smith had built Mrs Arton’s conservatory, which she was delighted with, so we were the first people to call for windows. Mrs Arton settled on Casement windows with

astragals at the top so they would match the existing sash and case style. As you can see from the picture, they fit the period building perfectly. Only now of course they have Next Generation Lorimer technology, so no more uncomfortable draughts. “It’s a real novelty to be able to open the windows now – so many are painted shut in the rest of the house,” added Mrs Arton.
“After 20 years I finally got round to renewing the harling on the front of the house,” Mrs Robertson told us, “well, one thing led to another and I wanted a complete face lift – not for me, for my home!” A couple of friends recommended CR Smith, so Mrs Robertson gave us a call. Her old windows were double glazed silver aluminium and way past their best. Mrs Robertson chose American light oak windows. Upstairs, the bedroom windows were changed to include egress hinges for fire evacuation and cleaning as demanded by Scottish Building Regulations. “I wanted window styles that were exactly right for my home and easy to
maintain,” said Mrs Roberston. “I suppose I could have done it cheaper but why pay less and get it wrong? And CR Smith gave me a really good Flexible-Fit™ deal – I was flexible about my installation dates and they were super flexible about the price!”

Lorimer Sliding Sash Window Lorimer PVCu Sliding Sash windows are like no other; unmistakable in their design, look and build. They will totally transform a room, inspire its décor and furnishings and make a statement about you and your home. The Lorimer Sliding Sash window has been designed to mimic the slim, contoured appearance of a traditional timber sash and case style. It is ideally suited to traditional properties where it is important to retain the character and style of the building, while still enjoying the benefits of modern manufacturing. They can be fitted to blend with existing wood panelling, to provide a seamless internal finish. Our features include a goal-post frame with authentic deep bottom rail and traditional ironmongery including a crescent lock, sash pulls and bell finger slides. This, along with decorative horns and ornate astragals, means it easily replicates the features of a timber sash and case window but with minimal maintenance. But you should have seen this new space come to life last Christmas. They just pushed back their sofas, invited in a three-piece band, and even had room for a dance floor. It’s really opened up the downstairs living space so the whole family can make the most of their home.
The Deans chose a Sunlounge with floor to ceiling windows. The white exterior and slate tiles on the floor contrast beautifully with the old stone house. But the real pièce de résistence are the supersized bi-fold doors that span the full length of the conservatory, cleverly combining the inside space with the outside patio.

Period piece Mr & Mrs Gardiner’s Casement Windows and French Doors Old homes can be brilliant, except for one thing – they do need lots of TLC. So how do you bring a fabulous period property into the 21st century and still keep its original character? As Mr Gardiner explained, “The windows were the original timber windows and while the style was lovely, they were past their best. But we just didn’t know whether the old timber windows could be replicated in PVCu.” After a chat with CR Smith and a good look at the shapely Lorimer contours, the Gardiners were convinced.
