T
he Herb & Spice on Wellington Street West, now in its 40th year, provides some of the region’s most delicious local provisions, specializing in fresh fruits and vegetables. Founded in 1973 by Mike Steinberg and Jeff Sugarman, the original Herb & Spice on Somerset Street West was Ottawa’s first bulk natural food store. “From that location, the store grew to include fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy, fresh baked goods and a large grocery selection,” says Mike. Since 1986, the Wellington Street location has been operated by Mike, Bonnie and ma’ayan Steinberg, whose hard work and hands-on approach have helped en-
sure the store’s continuing growth and success. “Choosing to be a fresh food market has been very good for us,” says Mike. “People have learned to enjoy shopping in the European style, to buy things as they need them. Our reputation for quality and freshness brings people from across the city, but most of our business comes from the local neighbourhood.” Located in the heart of Epicurean Row, between Huron and Gilchrist, the Herb & Spice is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. “Wellington West is now one of the city’s most dynamic retail areas,” he notes. “Having so many food shops concentrat-
ed in one neighbourhood is a wonderful thing. While strolling along Wellington Street West, you can socialize with friends and neighbours while popping in to various shops to purchase all the food your family needs.”
