Story by

Photography by Matt

Steve Ehret

Inspired by the natural world, self-taught painter Steve Ehret’s trail runs serve as idea-generating missions as he observes and makes mental notes that are later translated onto canvas.

Artistic Exposure. “I grew up loving comic book art and the way cartoons are illustrated, but I remember going to the Cleveland Museum of Art on a grade school field trip and getting to see oil paintings from the masters,” he says. “Seeing different art forms inspired me.”

Layers of Interest. “I like to play with paint and materials, and there are times when I just paint with oil or ink or watercolor, but I keep going back to layering, and you get so many interesting windows,” he relates. “It changes the image in an interesting way.”

Surface Value. Ehret’s mural painting started in an experimental way. “I would paint on the back of warehouses and abandoned buildings when I was in my 20s,” he says of after-hours spray-painting to learn the medium. He gradually met others in the graffiti art world across the state and was invited to paint walls in people’s homes, garages and eventually businesses. Ehret was invited to the graffiti jam 2Buck Invitational in Louisville, Kentucky, and has completed commissioned murals for the Factory of Terror Haunted House in Canton and a wall in Cleveland’s Flats East Bank in conjunction with Graffiti HeArt.

Owner of Studio Arts & Glass in Canton, Wendy Joliet carries on her late husband, Robert’s, passion for stained glass and fine arts with a dedicated team of talented craftspeople. From concept to design, fabrication and installation, the studio manages every aspect of its stained-glass projects.

On Display. The studio’s customdesigned stained glass can be found in churches, restaurants and homes. One of its prestigious projects includes the

stained glass in the Ohio Statehouse, along with projects in various Frank Lloyd Wright homes across the country, including the Westcott House in Springfield and properties in Chicago.

The Gift of Art. The studio gift shop features handmade art such as stainedglass picture frames and boxes, as well as jewelry crafted by artists from all over the U.S. and Canada. The shop also showcases Ohio and local artists, such as Mike Peterson Clay Art from Wooster.

A Hometown Fixture. For more than 40 years, Studio Arts & Glass has been doing business in Canton — and most recently, they completed a stained-glass wall feature in the restaurant 35 Brix in Uniontown. “We also created an upside-down Christmas tree in the middle of the restaurant and handblown glass feature bowls,” Joliet says.

A Seed of an Idea. Commissioned works come to life with the simplest idea — even a single word or color a client describes. “I like the challenge of someone saying, ‘I want a piece for my dad. He likes eagles,’ and that is the only piece of information they give me. I find a way to bridge my unique style with something they like,” he says.

A Tactile Approach. “I prefer working with my hands,” McDowell says of modeling works from clay as he develops sculptural designs.

On the Bench. The project that put McDowell on the map in Stark County was a large-scale stained-glass tree sculpture he created for Sandy Valley High School in Magnolia. From there, he was invited to build cast-aluminum custom park benches for Louisville — eight of them depicting various scenes related to the city and its history. Private clients have commissioned McDowell to make benches for their homes. Currently, he is completing sculptures for St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Massillon. CANTON

Special Effects. Francis’ career started in the film special effects industry working on horror films and movies like The Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. “I worked on Winter Soldier’s metal, painting and airbrushing and fitting it to him,” she says. “There are different materials their arms are made of based on if the characters are standing still or fighting.” With movies, “you have to be quick on your feet,” she adds. “For example, in a suspense scene where you have to make a character look like he is getting stabbed in the air by an imaginary monster, you have to figure out how to time the blood that will run through a hose, so there is a lot of engineering and problem-solving.”

Dear Canton. These days, Francis mostly creates murals and recently completed

a show titled Dear Canton. “It is all about the people I’ve met and places I’ve been in town and how they impact the community,” she says. “I wanted to show that expressed gratitude to them, to say ‘Hey, you’re seen; I see what you created for this place.’” For instance, she painted a woman she sees often who roller skates near Monument Park. “She looks so full of joy.”

Learn and Grow. As an instructor at Walsh University, Francis is equal parts artist and teacher. At Silo Arts, she mentors adults with disabilities and curates the gallery space. “Recently, I have been spending time with new artists, experienced artists and making art about community,” she says.

Tim Carmany

Tim Carmany started The Hub Art Factory more than 10 years ago and has grown it from four artists to a community of 18. His career started with reverse glass spray-painting and eventually morphed into oil painting and murals, which is now a primary focus.

Body Image. “I like to experiment with different kinds of portraits and various ways to represent the human face and body,” he says, pointing to his anatomy series that “was like medical cutaways of the body.” Around town, you can find Carmany’s large-scale portraits emblazoned on walls — Jim Morrison at Fronimo’s Downtown and Hank Williams at George’s Lounge.

Bold Color. Carmany’s reverse glass spraypaint process is much like screen printing. “I cover the back with masking tape and draw my image in reverse,” he describes. “Then, I cut one color at a time, layering the paint.” This technique reveals “the purest color,” he says, explaining that paint sits on the glass without soaking in the medium as with canvas.

In Style. The Hub’s exterior is an ever-evolving masterpiece, as Carmany uses the building as a “sketch pad” for murals when experimenting with new styles. Currently, a larger-than-life Betty White is “on display,” and previously, Carmany painted LeBron James. Of his style, Carmany calls it poppy and bright. “Pop-art style with dripping paint and clean lines on top of it is what I’m known for now.”

Women’s Movement

Through a variety of exhibitions, artifacts and special events, the National First Ladies Library & Museum in Canton recounts the extraordinary roles presidents’ wives have played throughout history. The site, administered by the National Park Service, is comprised of the historic Saxton-McKinley House, the childhood home of First Lady Ida Saxton McKinley and the place the former president and Mrs. McKinley lived during his time in office. Magnificently restored to 1800s Victorian grandeur, it showcases original furnishings, books and personal items,

including slippers crocheted by Ida McKinley that represented the hundreds of pairs she made to support local charities. National Park Service Ranger-led tours of the house are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Located in what was once Canton’s historic City National Bank and meticulously authentic with restored marble and 1890s architectural details, the museum’s Education and Research Center contains an archive featuring 150 dresses worn or used by First Ladies, as well as books, videos, photos, speeches, manuscripts, scholarly

research papers and a 91-seat Victorianstyle theatre.

Don’t Miss: Interact with fellow museum lovers during a plethora of special activities, from Third Thursdays Night Out, featuring a curator-led discussion, light appetizers and drinks; Cooking with the First Ladies, which reveal recipes and tutorials of these famed women; and First Ladies on the Page, a book club discussion. A new, featured exhibit Leaders in Literacy: First Ladies as Teachers, Educators, and Librarians, opens in spring 2024.

Dine and Unwind

Traveling with your tastebuds has its challenges. There are only so many meals one can eat in a day, and Canton is brimming with options. So, spending the night is a must. Poggio Amorelli Bed and Breakfast, owned by Chef Angela Perkins, is a foodie’s dream. A stay in the historic North Canton home includes handmade pastries upon arrival and delicious breakfasts.

They also host cooking classes for small groups. (Think: homemade pasta and artisan pizza.) If you prefer a resort-like feel, Gervasi Vineyard Resort & Spa will keep you full. The 55-acre winery and distillery includes Tuscan-style suites, an upscale boutique hotel and an 1830s restored farmhouse for lodging and many on-site dining options for the public. The Bistro is warm and rustic with its vaulted ceilings and upscale Italian cuisine; the Crush House is modern and inviting with its wine tastings and an array of salads, sandwiches and pastas for lunch and dinner; and the Still House doubles as a coffee shop and cocktail lounge, often with live music.

Don’t Miss: Satiating both food and history lovers, Canton Food Tours takes its participants through the city on three-hour walking tours, sharing the stories behind locally owned restaurants. With flexible start times, the tours win rave reviews from locals and visitors alike. Traversing downtown eateries will replace a full meal and includes a taste of the turtle soup at Bender’s Tavern (the oldest restaurant in Canton).

Local Hot Spots

A revitalized shopping center in northeast Canton, Oakwood Square is transforming into a foodie destination in itself.

John’s Bar & Grille recently moved to the area, bringing with it longtime customers. Teeming with nostalgia, the eatery boasts an extensive menu including fresh scrod (a fan favorite) and a well-loved French onion soup. Next door is The Bistro of Oakwood, a fine-dining establishment with a reputation for excellent service. Try the Hungarian hot peppers or the duck breast, and save room for the day’s cheesecake special.

Creating a Community Atmosphere

Home to many community events, such as the Main Street Festival and 720 Market, North Canton’s Main Street Center is a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA), meaning folks can partake in adult beverages outside. Make a day of it by visiting a few of the eateries within the designated district.

With its red-and-white checkered tablecloths and historic photos on the wall, family-owned Mama Guzzardi’s Italian Restaurant is known for both their Italian wedding soup and great prices. Try out one of their daily specials, and don’t miss the meatballs. A quirky, fast-casual joint boasting rotisserie chicken, The Howlin Bird has southern dishes, weekly trivia and a staff with a passion for mixology. Stop by for Sunday brunch, complete with mimosa flights. Don’t leave the area before visiting Pav’s Creamery, an ice cream shop founded in nearby Portage Lakes with indoor and outdoor seating. Pav’s serves up freshly made custard, homemade hard ice cream and a variety of boozy shakes for the grown-ups.

Taggart’s offers a menu filled with delicious made from scratch food and dessert creations including our most famous legacy, The Bittner.

This landmark opened in 1922 and quickly became known as the “shack on the track” due to its close proximity to the railroad tracks that cross 7th St. The original recipes for smoking meats, bean soup, and the famous “secret relish” recipe are still being used today.

Dine the Day Away

With First Fridays making the area come alive with live music, performance and visual arts and a must-see arts district complete with public art and a DORA of its own, Downtown Canton brings a large variety of options for the senses. But we’re here for the taste buds.

First, a visit to George’s Lounge is in order. Step inside this former crooner’s lounge (where Dean Martin once sang). Like many of the city’s best eateries, George’s looks like a dive, complete with a 1960s feel, and definitely delivers in the dining category. They locally source

their ingredients and make everything in house, including their area-famous grassfed burgers served on fluffy pretzel buns. (Pro tip: download the Visit Canton app for dining specials.)

Next is Lucca Downtown, another restaurant with an ethos of fresh and locally sourced ingredients. Known for their handmade pasta (including spaghetti, gnocchi and mozzarella-filled tortelloni), the restaurant is inspired by the city of Lucca in Italy. With an open kitchen, live piano player and a romantic atmosphere, a visit to Lucca transports you to Tuscany, if only for an evening. Try the caprese

salad, anything with a cream sauce, and don’t be shy about ordering the filet or strip steaks. (Come with someone willing to share their pasta, so you don’t miss out.)

The previously mentioned Bender’s Tavern (Canton’s oldest restaurant) serves the best seafood in the area thanks to a partnership with Foley Fish in Boston, who ships over super-fresh seafood. The delightful oak-paneled and highceilinged dining room brings history to life. Lore has it that conversations about bringing the Pro Football Hall of Fame to Canton happened alongside Bender’s own bar. With melt-in-your-mouth halibut,

fresh oysters, lobster tails and perfectly seared scallops, this piece of Canton’s culture is well worth a visit.

While classic American and Italian food is abundant, Downtown Canton also offers memorable world cuisine. If you’re in the mood for Middle Eastern fare and live belly dancing, The Desert Inn is your place. The Desert Inn, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, showcases substantial family-style meals with a variety of proteins that include a rack of lamb, beef kabobs, filet mignon and charbroiled chicken breast. Priced per person, the meal comes with a beloved Grecian salad, garlic toast, broasted potatoes and Syrian rice. Don’t miss the Middle Eastern egg roll with tzatziki.

Get Dressed Up

There’s no shortage of places to celebrate in the area, but two stellar eateries stand out not only for their cuisine, but for their wine selections. (What better way to say cheers than with a glass of cabernet?)

Massillon’s upscale neighborhood concept, Social at the Stone House, serves up fusion cuisine in an 1800s three-story historic home with fireside, patio or private room dining options. Although it opened just two years ago, Stone House has an old-school feel. The gluten-free and vegetarian-friendly menu features flatbreads, sandwiches, mains and a large array of desserts, and they’re known for an extensive wine list.

Next up is Nosh, a street-level lunch spot in Downtown Canton. The scratch eatery with delicate and beautifully displayed tapas is also open for dinner on Thursdays. The shareable small plates and cozy speakeasy-style setting make for an intimate dining experience. Try the short rib risotto and anything from the excellent wine menu.

Hospitality From The Heart Of Amish Country

Love

What Locals

MANY BELOVED CANTON DESTINATIONS GO BACK DECADES, AND SOME ARE SO POPULAR THAT THEY’VE OPENED UP MULTIPLE LOCATIONS OVER THE YEARS. WE CHECK IN ON A FEW FAN FAVORITES.

Classic Canton Diners

Downtown Canton’s Conestoga Grill has a lively atmosphere and is a gathering place for reunions and celebrations. They serve a wide variety of craft beers (the coldest in Canton, some say) and traditional bar fare, as well as a simple but well-executed dinner menu, including prime rib and a sizable portion of lasagna. A block away is Samantha’s Downtown Restaurant & Bar, one of four Stark County “Samantha” restaurants. The seasonal breakfast, lunch and dinner specials

are a hit. Try the jumbo cinnamon swirl French toast and a cocktail of your choice, because you can. Centennial Plaza’s location of Jerzee’s Cafe offers another Downtown Canton option.

Jerzee’s has several locations in the area. Check out their thick crust pizza, half price on Thursdays. Loby’s Bar and Grille is another beloved small chain. Saddle up to one of the bars at Loby’s on CLE — inside or out — to try an order of the spicy Hungarian peppers filled with sausage, veal and ricotta.

SAMANTHA’S
DOWNTOWN RESTAURANT & BAR: DAVID DINGWELL Samantha’s downtown restaurant & Bar

You’ll find more stuffed peppers at Harmon’s Pub. (This is where the service industry grabs drinks, so you know it’s good.) Harmon’s deep-fried hot peppers are stuffed with jerky-sized sticks of salami and cheese. Another must-have is their buffalo chicken dip, a perfect game-watching snack.

Heggy’s is known for sweets, but don’t overlook the wallet-friendly diner options at Heggy’s Nut Shop

Since 1950, this mom-and-pop shop has served freshly ground burgers and the prices are mid-century as well.

Hit up North Canton’s Walthers Twin Tavern, which offers breakfast, lunch and dinner and a brunch buffet on Sundays. A family-friendly joint, Walthers is what happens when a sports bar and comfort food collide. Try the chicken and waffles or the hand-battered mushrooms.

Stark County Classics

The world owes the founders of Akron’s Menches Brothers a thank you. They invented the hamburger at the 1885 Erie County Fair after running out of pork for their sausage patty sandwiches. The Massillon location provides 50 varieties of burgers at a quick clip. Also in Massillon, open since 1944, Cameo Grill is a cozy tavern known for its one-pound Cameo Burger, topped with a pickled Hungarian pepper and plenty of onions. Order a side of the crispy deep-fried zucchini fingers. You’ll be happy.

Hartville Kitchen serves Amish-style entrees at an affordable price. The line is worth it, especially for Hartville’s house-made salad dressings (think: sweet and sour and two types of ranch) and a large selection of pies. Customers love the coconut cream, but go for the rhubarb crumb if it’s in season.

Open since 1926, Taggarts Ice Cream is a classic ice cream parlor and restaurant with ornate wooden finishes on its booths. Check out the Bittner, a vanilla ice cream treat topped with homemade chocolate syrup, roasted pecans and a dollop of whipped cream. The origin story of the dish varies; in one version, it’s named after the Bittner boys who played ball down the street, but customers provide other iterations, including it being connected to a group of nuns who frequented the shop in the 1930s.

Sweet Tooth

With dark and milk chocolate candies and peanuts by the pound, 100-year-old Ben Heggy’s Candy Co. is the holiday go-to for local families. You can also find their products at Laura’s Candies & Nuts, a North Canton shop opened by Heggy’s granddaughter, Laura.

While in North Canton, chocolate lovers should take a tour of the Fannie May (formerly Harry London) factory and pick up a pound of Mint Meltaways, one of their bestsellers. Nearby is Anastasiades, a family-run chocolate shop open since 1984, praised for their peanut butter cups and their individually dipped buckeyes. Waggoner Chocolates was started in a Canton basement in 1922. Locals love the Turtle Dainties, and so will you. Love peanut brittle and roasted cashews? Ben Wollenberg Chocolates is an old-fashioned shop that serves up plenty of both.

Honadle’s Fine Chocolates sources many of its ingredients from local businesses and supplies chocolates to many area markets, including The Shops at Hartville Kitchen Candy Shop, a playground of sweets that also sells Heggy’s roasted nuts. While in the area, visit Hartville Chocolate Factory, an old-fashioned candy and gift shop with pumpkin ice cream and a following for their fudge.

Bender’s Tavern is a Downtown Canton institution in the historic district with a nationally recognized wine list and a range of options for the moderate price palate. The restaurant is known as a seafood specialist with menu dishes like its Bender’s Classic Fried Haddock, Sauteed Georges Banks Sea Scallops and Walleye Pickerel. You will also find high-quality steaks and entrees centered on chicken, chops and pasta. We’ll toast to that.

Don’t Miss: A Bender’s classic for more than 60 years, the Turtle Soup is served with a shot of sherry — and there’s nothing mock about the turtle in this bisque.

Embracing its location in Downtown Canton’s Arts District, Grapes in a Glass covers its walls in canvas prints from all over the world and sells stained glass, jewelry and, of course, wine. Bring your pooch to the dog-friendly front patio and depend on the trained staff to guide you through a tasting. With more than 70 wines by the glass or flight, you’ll appreciate the advice.

Wine Not? Check out the extensive list of brews and spirits if a glass of grapes is not your thing.

Cheers to fish! Really. The combination is inspiration at Muskellunge Brewing Co., which named each of its beers in honor of a species of freshwater fish based on the drink’s “personality.” Equally tempting are its labels by neighboring BZTAT Studios’ artist Vicki Boatright.

Choose Jerzee’s Cafe, one of four Jerzee’s locations around Stark County, to kick back and watch a game. Enjoy views of the jumbotron in Centennial Plaza. The Pro Football Hall of Fame outpost hosted more than 30 events last summer and is a live-action entertainment destination in downtown.

Check out artifacts from Brown’s collection — namely, his signature fedora and playbooks — along with uniforms, photographs and a reference library. Explore the interactive app.

Opened in 1899, long before digital content was a thing, the historic Massillon Public Library evolved with the community. Now it includes several branches, a bookmobile and maker space. The 16-acre property includes woods, fields, gardens and a number of outbuildings such as a milk house, grain barn and wool house.

Is drama more appealing than a dig? See a classic film or take in one of the many plays and concerts that take the stage at restored Lions Lincoln Theatre, built in 1915 for motion pictures and now serving as a performing arts center.

Dine On

Eat, drink and be Social at the Stone House, an upscale neighborhood establishment with a menu inspired by fusion cuisine. Set in a restored 1800s home, the sophisticated setting is an ideal date night destination — and equally fit for a family day out. Plus, the patio is pet friendly.

Massillon To-Gather

There’s always something happening in the city, thanks to the Downtown Massillon Association, which hosts the annual Fun Fest, Pep Rally and Holly Days, along with Massillon WestStark Chamber of Commerce promoting the area’s thriving local businesses and growing community.

An infusion of restoration and repurposing welcomes sought-after entrepreneurial endeavors, including Erie Street Vinyl, a destination for hand-picked, curated new and used records. With new releases from indie labels to a treasure trove of used vinyl finds, the neon sign at its entrance quoting The Talking Heads is apropos. “This must be the place.”

As for place, Duncan Plaza’s renaissance into a gathering space in the city center includes a covered stage for concerts and community events. Don’t miss vendors along the connected First Street, but do go on a quiet day and spread your picnic at one of its tables. The plaza pays homage to one of the city’s founders — and lives on as a space where the community comes together.

City Sips

With views of the Sippo Valley Trail, rolling fields and the occasional Amish buggy sighting, Cherry Road Winery produces Ohio wines on site and offers a tasting with ample property for outdoor music and sipping.

Sip This: Taste a glass of Towpath Trail chardonnay, a red blend called Three Bridges or the IO “In Ohio” sweet white, a nod to O-H-I-O.

Plan time to head to Rohr’s Wine Room as well, dubbed a small winery in a big football town. If you save the trip for a Saturday night, listen to live music. The winery’s pride is in its small-batch, handcrafted varieties and laid-back vibe.

Amazing Evolutions: Sip on an array of infused white wines, including white cranberry, green apple and peach apricot. Can’t go wrong with a slushy.

At Paradigm Shift Craft Brewery, it all started with homebrewing and evolved into a 10-barrel brewhouse that produces a selection of dark, hoppy, hefeweizen, lagers and more. Here, choose from a selection of 12 taps to pair with a delicious array of elevated pub grub.
