Gambier natives, avid cyclists and nature lovers — meet our three generations on the cover of the Knox County Visitors Guide. “We moved to Gambier for the charm, the nature and definitely the trails,” say Robb and Michelle Mann. “We ride the trail daily and love making the trip into Mount Vernon for the farmers market or any fun local events.” Eleanor (9) and Tullulah (5) Wright often find themselves at the trail with their parents, Zach and Sarah. “We love the train and the bridges, there’s so much to explore,” says Eleanor. Pictured here with her beloved sidekick, Josephine, Tullulah loves scootering on the trail with her big sister or enjoying the ride from behind her mom’s e-bike. “Knox County is the perfect place to experience small town living with great natural amenities. We feel so lucky to live so close to the trail,” says Sarah Mann-Wright. Sarah + Zach’s Local Fav: “Happy Street Brü Werks. The best vibes, live music, food trucks and as a bonus, it’s dog and kid friendly!” Robb + Michelle’s Local Fav: “The Village Inn. Great patio along the charming backdrop of Kenyon College.”

COMMUNITY

Good things come in small packages, and that’s certainly true of the towns and villages of Knox County — each tight-knight community has a flavor all its own. You could spend a day, week or even a lifetime exploring and getting to know the region’s shopping, dining, outdoor adventure and friendly faces.

BY ANN FAZZINI

Brinkhaven

Centerburg

Brinkhaven may be small in size, but it’s big on beauty. The paved Mohican Valley Trail navigates through the forested hills along an old Penn Central Railroad route and crosses over the Mohican River via the Bridge of Dreams, the third-longest covered bridge in the country. It’s not unusual to see local Amish families in buggies, on horseback or riding bikes along the 5-mile path. Looking for a tranquil stay by the river? Stay in an eco-luxury glamping dome at Mohican Hideaway!

The community nearest the geographic center of the state is a popular and growing trail town. It marks the midpoint of the 326-mile Ohio to Erie Trail and makes a great place to stop for some good eats (1834 Midway Tavern and Pizza Burg are local favorites) and a stroll around town to check out some historical murals. Antique lovers: Village Mercantile features vendor booths from more than 30 local makers peddling everything from vintage books to handmade holiday decorations.

Fredericktown

Gambier

Located on the Amish Country Scenic Byway, the trip to and through Danville shows visitors some of the most dramatic country vistas in the state. Here you’ll find one terminus of the 14-mile Kokosing Gap Trail — weary riders can stop for the night at the trailhead’s primitive camping site. Stop in for coffee and stay for the stylish clothes at The Blonde Robin or browse a hand-curated collection of antiques and collectibles at A Peace of the Past. Danville is also a one-stopshop for Amish-crafted home goods — save time to browse the showrooms at Keim’s Country Furniture and Weaver’s Farm and Furniture, which also features a farm animal petting zoo and deli.

Fredericktown’s laid-back vibe makes it an ideal spot for the entire family. During the warmer months, kids can make waves at the new Kokosing Park Splash Park, a 1,200-square-foot splash pad. Visit on a Thursday to enjoy the Fredericktown Farmer’s Market, evenings from 4 p.m.– 7 p.m. beginning in June. The annual Fredericktown Tomato Show is an early-September staple and local favorite — the fest features arts and crafts for sale, tractor pulls, parades, music and, of course, plenty of fair food. For a memory-making weekend, rent a cabin near the Knox Lake Wildlife Area and take to the water for some boating and fishing.

A true college town, Kenyon College (alma mater of Paul Newman) gives stately, tree-lined Gambier a youthful energy. The lush, picturesque campus includes the nearby Brown Family Environmental Center (BFEC), a 610-acre nature preserve that offers hiking trails through forest, wetland and prairie lands, plus an array of free, public programs. If you’re in the area in June, don’t miss a visit to Schnormeier Gardens, a stunning 75-acre property featuring 10 themed gardens, outdoor art pieces, waterfalls and a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired residence. The grounds are only open to the public on select dates in June and tickets must be purchased in advance (reserve your spot early — tickets go quickly!).

NOT SURE WHERE TO GET STARTED? 6

Visit the Knox County Convention and Visitors Bureau located in the historic CA&C Visitor Center open Monday–Friday 9 a.m.–5 p.m. on South Main Street in Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050.

Howard

Martinsburg

Mount Vernon

Lovers of the outdoors will find fun and adventure in and around the hamlet of Howard. The 14-mile Kokosing Gap Trail passes through town and welcomes bikers, inline skaters and cross-country skiers for a four-season experience. The trail hugs the banks of the Kokosing River on an old Pennsylvania Railroad route. Prefer to travel by water? Paddle your way through 27.9 miles of forested land and past sandstone bluffs on the Kokosing Scenic River Water Trail. Rent canoes, kayaks and tubes at Kokosing Valley Camp and Canoe (there’s a pool, playground and mini-golf course on-site), or set up for a night on the riverbank at Serenity Cabin at Owl Creek.

Country roads, wide open spaces and picturesque farms dot the landscape around Martinsburg, which also sits on the Amish Country Scenic Byway. The area’s pastoral charm is also reflected in local family-owned shops. Snag country chic decor, bath goods and whimsical gifts at Prim-Tiques boutique and hunt for one-of-a-kind home goods, furniture pieces, toys and clothes at Hidden Oak Thrift Shop. Yoder’s Fine Foods, a family business since 1975, is a must-stop for sweet and savory homemade jams in flavors like red raspberry jalapeño and cinnamon pear. Thrill seekers and MX enthusiasts must visit Route 62 MX Track park, featuring four tracks for riders of all levels.

Knox County’s largest town features an irresistible mix of historic and contemporary charm. The walkable downtown area is full of whimsical shops, boutiques and eateries, as well as a vibrant town square (don’t miss the adorable Dog Fountain). Every August, the square explodes with colorful sights and sounds for the Mount Vernon Music & Arts Festival, the area’s quintessential summer event. For more live performances throughout the year, catch a show at the Woodward Opera House, one of the country’s oldest original 19th-century theaters. And for an out-of-the-box outdoor experience, stop by Ariel-Foundation Park, built on the repurposed grounds of a glass factory and featuring a 280-foot-tall smoke stack observation tower, a labyrinth and unique public art pieces.

Take to the Trails Cyclists, walkers and runners will love the county’s trails, starting with The Heart of Ohio Trail. From Mount Vernon, you’ll cross a 230-foot steel bridge and then 19 more bridges over Dry Creek (be sure to visit the marker for the geographical center of Ohio at Centerburg Memorial Park). In Howard, join the Kokosing Gap Trail, which is built on the old Pennsylvania Railroad line. This 14-mile paved trail passes historic railroad stock, the Kokosing River, wetlands and Gambier (home of Kenyon College) before eventually meeting up with the nearly 5-mile Mohican Valley Trail in Danville. Cross the Mohican River via the 370-foot-long Bridge of Dreams, which is the state’s second longest covered bridge and third longest in the nation.

Centerburg marks the halfway point of the trail, making it an ideal spot to rest for a spell.

Ways to Water Paddlers and boaters can access the beautiful Kokosing and Mohican rivers via more than a dozen access points for floating, wildlife viewing, fishing, hunting and other pursuits. There’s also the 27.5-mile Mohican River Water Trail to discover, which passes through lush forest that provides habitat for a variety of flora and fauna. It even winds nearby Clear Fork Gorge State Nature Preserve and Mohican State Park. Meanwhile, the Kokosing River Water Trail is just slightly longer, spanning 28 miles. Grass That’s Greener Knox County’s parks encompass nearly 1,000 acres in total, ripe for exploration. Enjoy the 70-acre Thayer Ridge Park, which offers horseback and mountain bike riding, a disc golf course and a wet woodlands area. Honey Run Highlands Park is a 348-acre, ecologically diverse property across the road from the gushing 25-foot Honey Run Waterfall. At the park, you’ll find hiking trails, picnic areas and sandstone cliffs and boulders. Be on the lookout for barn owls, wild turkeys and ring-necked pheasants. Located adjacent to and operated by Kenyon College, the Brown Family Environmental Center offers 11-plus miles of scenic trails through hardwood forests, tall grass prairies and other ecosystems. Public programs such as star gazing, yoga, full moon hikes, prairie tours and an annual photography contest further the center’s mission to educate and share the story of Ohio’s landscape. The Kokosing Nature Preserve is also a part of the Kenyon College family and offers both a natural alternative to traditional burial practices and a gorgeous spot for an afternoon nature walk. The 23 acres of restored prairies and woodlands are a stunning tribute to the individuals who’ve found their final resting place among the rolling hills and wildflowers.

KNOX COUNTY VISITORS GUIDE 2024–2025

Game Time Avid hunters and anglers alike will find plenty of wild game to take on. The 469-acre Knox Lake is a peaceful reservoir and fisherman’s haven created by damming the Kokosing River in 1954. There are more than 11 miles of shoreline to take advantage of, and the maximum lake depth is more than 24 feet near the dam. Historically, Knox Lake is one of the best largemouth bass spots in the state and is often sought out for large trophy flathead catfish. Anglers can also catch black and white crappie, channel catfish, yellow perch and bluegill. Each fall and winter, hunters flock to Ohio for its abundant deer population. As one of the top 10 counties in the state for deer, the sprawling forests of Knox County are open for firearm or bow hunting to those with all the proper permits. Late spring is another popular time to visit as the sound of bountiful wild turkey gobbles fills the air. Spend less time planning and more time out in the wild with seasoned hunters when you book an experience through Kokosing River Outfitters. In need of equipment? Shop a wide array of sporting equipment and firearms at Danville Outdoors.

The Pupside of Knox There’s plenty to do with canine friends in Knox County. You can both stretch your legs at the 2-acre bark park with a doggie agility playground at Wolf Run Regional Park or at the 3-acre Village Dog Park in Gambier. Fido can beat the heat with dog water fountains on the Kokosing Gap Trail and the doggy swim area along the Mohican Valley Trail. The ultimate homage to fur babies is the Mount Vernon Dog Fountain. Here, 18 different dog breeds from pug to Great Dane all do their part to fill the downtown fountain. Keep an eye out for two party crashers — a Shetland pony and a cat — and four sweet songbirds.

Check out Woodward Opera House, where performers share center stage with the building’s rich history. The stunning venue is one of America’s oldest authentic 19th-century theaters still standing, and it’s in great shape after a 20-plus-year restoration project completed in 2019. DAY 1 As the halfway point on the Ohio to Erie bike trail, Centerburg is a convenient stopping point for cyclists pedaling through — this one-night itinerary takes out the guesswork.

Explore downtown Centerburg at your own pace, browsing the wares at Marigold on Main — you might be surprised at the treasures you uncover. For dinner, order a cheesy slice of goodness at Long Branch Pizza or head to 1834 Midway Tavern for pub-style dining. Don’t call it a night without stopping at Twist ’N Shake for a classic soft serve or the blizzard of the month!

DAY 2

Heart Center Inn, a charming, historic red brick house, is the perfect nook to rest for the night. Its convenient location right in town makes for easy walking to Centerburg’s best amenities.

Fuel up at Eggmann’s Eatery before hitting the trail. Share a waffle charcuterie board or order a decadent entrée just for yourself — from sunny side up eggs with grits to waffles topped with peanut butter mousse, chocolate and fresh strawberries. RECONNECT Two Night Stay

This two-night itinerary is a perfect fit for couples or friends looking to take a break from the day-to-day and get immersed in local arts, culture and eats.

HOME BASE With checkered floors, art, stained glass and chic furnishings, the Galerie Suite at the Coleman Family Gallery will have you feeling like you’re in France, not Ohio. Plus, it’s located above a local art gallery right in downtown Mount Vernon. The Mount Vernon Inn is also an excellent hub for a getaway. This bed-andbreakfast style inn offers cozy rooms, a beautiful garden and the type of generous hospitality only found in small towns.

DAY 1 The perfect pairing for any first night? Dinner and a show. For dinner, pizza at Burrata Woodfired does not disappoint with chewy crust and a classic smoky flavor you only get when you cook the pie right on the flames. If you’re more in the mood for margaritas, guac and tacos, Fiesta Mexicana is the place to go. After dinner, catch a live performance in the historic Woodward Opera House. Ohio’s arts community takes the stage at Knox Memorial Theater, where community concerts, plays and musicals dazzle guests.

Downtown hotspot Flapper’s Bar & Grille was featured on America’s Best Restaurants YouTube channel! Scan to learn more about their local flavors on tap and delicious menu. CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Flappers Bar

DAY 2 It would be wrong to call the pancakes at The Homestead Family Restaurant plate-sized … because they’re bigger than the plates. Homestead’s menu does not disappoint for breakfast lovers. If you’re more of a waffle or biscuits and gravy fan, North Main Café is the choice for your crew. After brunch, there’s several options for an outdoor adventure. Explore the carefully curated Japanese gardens at Schnormeier Gardens (open only in June), walk the Mohican Valley Trail to the Bridge of Dreams covered bridge that crosses the Mohican River or hike from the cascading waterfall at Honey Run Park to the Kokosing River. Unwind with halotherapy and a massage at the Harmony Salt Spa or choose from several spa and beauty services at Salon 361. 18

Make your last night special. Dine at The Alcove Restaurant & Lounge, where local ingredients take the stage at this fine dining staple that’s been operating for over a century. After dinner, raise a glass to a weekend well spent at Happy Street Brü Werks, where you’ll find craft beers and live music. Flappers Bar & Grille also has a great selection on tap and a pool table ready for friendly competition.

DAY 3 Wake up with coffee and pastries at Wiggin Street Coffee or a refreshing fruity beverage at Green Vibes juice bar. Take your drinks to go and explore Mount Vernon’s Farmers Market where you can stock up on local produce and goods to take a little bit of your trip home with you.

Kenyon Inn & Restaurant, Gambier Kenyon Inn & Restaurant, located on the historic Kenyon College campus, is one of Knox County’s only four-star dining establishments. It offers weekend brunch, a casual lunch or an elegant dinner in a traditional fine dining atmosphere. Try the chef’s creations like ahi tuna tacos, banh mi sandwiches, beef Bolognese or crispy tofu. One of the house specialties is the Reuben sandwich with corned beef, sauerkraut, Thousand Island and Ohio-original Guggisberg baby Swiss cheese. And, yes, it’s a functioning inn, so you can book a night’s stay!

The Pub, Howard The Pub in Howard always draws a crowd for its gastropub fare and regional favorites. Settle into a booth in the cozy brick and tile dining room and enjoy live tunes or watch your favorite teams on several TVs. Enjoy one of the pub macs, including buffalo chicken and blackened shrimp varieties, or a made-from-scratch pizza with crispy Neapolitan-style dough. If brunch is more your style, feast on chicken and waffles or sausage gravy and biscuits on Sunday mornings.

MORE FOODIE FUN

Mazza’s, Mount Vernon Mazza’s is another Mount Vernon institution, welcoming eager diners to its massive dining rooms since 1939. It’s the place to enjoy warm camaraderie over home-cooked Italian meals: think comfort fare like lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, chicken parm and their new Neapolitan-style pizzas. But one of the signatures you won’t want to miss is the crispy, freshly tossed famous Mazza’s salad, which you can order on the side, as a whole entrée or even atop a pizza!

Late night cravings? Find your new favorite slice of cheesy goodness.

The Village Inn, Gambier

Eggmann’s Eatery, Centerburg

Look for the tall columns flanking the front door to find Gambier’s The Village Inn. Find a seat on the patio or inside with its wood-paneled walls, comfy booths and hush lighting. Ask the server for the daily special, or work your way through a menu focused on loads of comfort foods. House favorites include BBQ pulled pork quesadillas, mac and cheese with andouille sausage, smokehouse burgers and Thai peanut chicken wraps.

Self-described as a “finer diner,” Eggmann’s Eatery in Centerburg is a family-friendly spot serving breakfast and lunch. Whatever you order, don’t miss the waffles! They come in all forms: loaded potato waffle fries, waffle sandwiches with bacon and eggs, zesty chicken and waffles, churro-like cinnamon sugar waffles for dessert — even a waffle charcuterie board with mini waffles for dipping. It’s hard to say what’s more eggcellent: the food or the service!

KNOX COUNTY VISITORS GUIDE 2024–2025

Travel back through time to learn about local legends and lore. BY FELICIA BROWER Remnants of Knox County’s 200-plus years of storied history are easy to find. Start your trip through time with a driving tour to hunt for the 17 (and counting!) Ohio Historic Markers sharing memorable tales. Find the spot where the famed Johnny Appleseed spent his days, or visit one of the many museums, theaters, shops and restaurants that continue to honor the past in present day. Get a glimpse at what life was like back in the 1800s and early 1900s at the Knox County Agricultural Museum. With more than 5,000 artifacts to see firsthand, the museum is the best place to get a feel for the farm and home lives of Knox County’s previous generations. For a broader view of the county’s roots, stop by the Knox County Historical Society with its huge collection of antiquities and friendly historians.

TOP TO BOTTOM: Knox County

Pair rich history with modern entertainment at a show at the Woodward Opera House — one of the oldest authentic 19th-century theaters in the United States. See impressive plays, musicals and other theatrical productions with the stunning backdrop of a venue lovingly restored to its 1850s heyday. At Knox Memorial Theater, catch innovative productions from the resident theater company, MTVarts, inspiring speakers and musical performances from talented artists. The annual National Waco Club Reunion is a must-do for aviation enthusiasts. Running for more than 60 years, you’ll get to meet people from all over the country who share a love of flying and owning Waco aircrafts. If you’d rather keep your feet planted firmly on the ground, take a stroll over the historic Bridge of Dreams in Brinkhaven. As one of the longest covered bridges in both the state and the country, this 370-foot-long structure crosses the Mohican State Scenic River and follows an abandoned railroad line dating back to the 1920s. When you work up an appetite, stop by Southside Diner in Mount Vernon for a bite to eat. There’s something for everyone, and they even have a separate second kitchen to prepare allergy-friendly food. Try a daily special or go with a classic like a slow roasted prime rib sandwich. Satisfy your sweet tooth at Mount Vernon’s Almost Famous Sweets & Sodas. They’re a family-owned candy shop with more than 150 drink options and a rotating selection of familiar and one-of-a-kind sweet treats. Before the day is done, stop by Crickets on South Main antiques in Mount Vernon and take a piece of history home with you. The shop has booths from dozens of vendors with goods ranging from primitives to midcentury modern wares to homemade arts and crafts.

WINTER SPRING 2024

THE ANNEX CHITRA GANESH AND PRINTMAKING Architects of the Future series (2014)

Located in a restored storefront in downtown Mount Vernon, The Annex is an extension of Kenyon College’s teaching museum, The Gund. Through programs informed by The Gund’s growing permanent collection, we reimagine what it means to “learn with art” as a community. We invite neighbors, families, students, and lifelong learners to discover new connections to art, ideas, and each other through free workshops, creative activities, and events.
