IF THESE

TRAILS COULD TALK By Alexia Kemerling

From curious human hikers to soaring birds and growing ferns, the trails of the Hocking Hills have seen it all. What stories would each trail tell? What requests would they make of visitors? We asked the local naturalists and hikers who know the region best.

4

1 - 80 0 -HOCKIN G

FLIP YOUR PERSPECTIVE

Kaylin Callander is a naturalist at Lake Hope State Park, though she prefers to call herself a “facilitator of wonder.” Her job includes everything from teaching people how to shoot bows and arrows to leading wildlife programs. Callander says that visiting state parks helps remind us that we’re a part of nature, too. “Out in nature, we’re confronted with the fact that we’re not really the center of the world,” Callander says. When you explore Lake Hope, you’ll find a variety of habitats and plant and animal species, all thriving thanks to complex, intricate ecosystems. For a particularly special sight, Callander recommends kayaking to the back of the lake in the summer. You’ll find pink fragrant waterlilies covering the entire surface of the water — it’s a sight unique to this area. Another special summer program affords visitors the opportunity to handfeed ruby-throated hummingbirds vials of sugar. “For a few moments, you can pretend to be a flower — calm and still,” Callander says. As visitors enjoy Lake Hope, Callander says it’s our duty to ask, “What can we do to help keep nature healthy and happy?” Her chief request: Keep trails litter free!

SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF

According to local hiker Paul Knoop, one mistake visitors make is walking so fast that they miss half the sights. Knoop advises slowing down to notice small wonders, like blooming wildflowers and darting minnows. When hikers are more attentive to their surroundings, they’re more likely to be respectful of natural habitats. One hidden gem Knoop loves exploring is Tar Hollow State Park and Forest. The park offers boating, fishing, swimming and hiking. “Tar Hollow is one of the best places to spot the timber rattlesnake — my favorite critter,” Knoop says. To remind yourself to take it slow, and keep kids engaged, Knoop recommends bringing a magnifying glass. You might be surprised what a closer look reveals!

Trail Tip

STAY THE PATH

Clear Creek Metro Park is both a nature preserve and a metro park, meaning it has public trails and protected areas. Naturalist Katie Bennett says this balance is essential. “Our protected areas preserve the unique diversity of the area, while our public trails give visitors the chance to see and appreciate the beauty, in turn motivating them to help preserve the land,” Bennett says. Bennett notes one of the most important things visitors can do is stay on the trails, for the safety of themselves and wildlife. This park is home to 2,200 different species of plants and animals, including cerulean warblers and a variety of orchids, ferns and hemlock trees.

Buy an identification book to learn about wildlife or pick up a Mother Nature’s Classroom packet at the Hocking Hills Welcome Center (13178 St. Rte. 664 S., Logan). The packet includes activities like scavenger hunts, bird observation sheets, sound mapping and more. Individual projects are also available on ExploreHockingHills.com/ Mother-Nature-S-Classroom.

LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND

JOHN GLENN ASTRONOMY PARK: LAURA WATILO BLAKE

Clyde Gosnell and Louise “Omie” Warner, both over 90 years old, have dedicated their lives to the outdoors. They helped redirect State Route 664 to provide a better, safer entrance to Hocking Hills State Park and helped open John Glenn Astronomy Park. Since first visiting the Hocking Hills as a Boy Scouts counselor in 1940, Gosnell knew the region was a national gem. “Living on this earth is a real privilege,” Gosnell says. “When you live in such a gem of place, you also have a responsibility, and that is to take care of yourself and the land and natural features.” Warner adds that the best way for hikers to help preserve the land is to, “Leave only a footprint, take only a picture.”

Trail Tip Looking for a peaceful trail to hike? Try exploring Hocking State Forest and Boch Hollow Nature Preserve, which has riparian corridors, mature forests and sandstone outcrops. Both also connect to the Buckeye Trail. If opting for more popular trails, like Old Man’s Cave or Ash Cave, visit on weekdays or early mornings to avoid traffic. Spend your weekend and daytime trips visiting the hidden gems mentioned in this story.

on’t risk missing an inch of the region — take in the beauty mile by mile on the Hocking Hills Scenic Byway. The 26-mile thoroughfare traverses hilly roads with overarching canopies of greenery above and beside you that lead to hilltop ridges with vistas of open pastures and wooded hills in the distance. Along the way, you’ll pass massive rock outcroppings that hint at the carved gorges and recess caves sprinkled throughout this natural wonderland. Expect to see goldfinches or bluebirds and other wildlife such as raccoons, white-tailed deer and wild turkeys. Note wildflowers like trillium and bluebells in the spring or towering patches of purplish-pink Joe Pye Weed in the fall. Especially sharp-eyed passengers might spot Mail Pouch barns and a mound erected by ancestors of many modern American Indian tribes. Best of all, the route passes all the major noncontiguous sites in Hocking Hills State Park — Cantwell Cliffs, Rock House, Old Man’s Cave, Cedar Falls and Ash Cave, as well as other highlights like John

Glenn Astronomy Park, Butterfly Ridge Conservation Center and Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve. Drives along the byway can serve as quick introductions to the area or full-day explorations filled with intriguing stops.

Pedal to New Places Want to go for a spin? With Hocking Hills as your hub, cycling adventures are right out your door or a short ride away. No matter how or where you roll, there’s something to excite, inspire or challenge you.

T

he towns of Nelsonville and Athens are linked by a 21-milelong ribbon of pavement that follows a former rail trail alongside the Hocking River. Along the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway, which gets its name from the native cultures that originally inhabited the area, you’ll come across former coal-mining boom towns, two colleges, remnants of the Hocking Canal, breweries and abundant wildlife. To learn more about the endemic species of animals, pay a visit to the Hocking College Nature Center in Nelsonville. The Nature Center offers adult bike rentals by the hour or day and offers additional resources like the Birding Ohio’s Bikeways Guide, which helps identify birds by sight and song in the various habitats along the route. By late 2022, the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway will connect directly to the new Baileys Trail System, a growing number of mountain biking routes within Wayne National Forest, near the town of Chauncey (pronounced “Chanceeee”). Varying in difficulty, from easy to challenging, the purpose-built 10

1 -80 0 -HOCKIN G

By Laura Watilo Blake trails were placed with the help of archaeologists and historians to avoid disturbing the relics of the Industrial Revolution hidden deep in the woods. If you’re in race mode, you’ll likely miss most of them, but the chunks of black rock lining the beginner Gob Pile Loop are easy to spot. They may look like obsidian, but they are actually discarded byproducts of coal, known as gob or slag. If you're looking to follow-up your serene morning hike with a more exhilarating afternoon bike ride, take advantage of mountain bike trails located within Hocking Hills State Park. You'll find two 2-mile trails — one moderate and one difficult. Lake Hope State Park is another well-established spot in Ohio for intermediate to advanced cyclists. Located within the Zaleski State Forest, the park has more than 25 miles of maintained wooded trails that lead riders over steep hills and through deep ravines. The trailhead for several of the more popular trails starts just past the cabins at the western end of the lake. The Hope Furnace Trail offers lake views and cool breezes.

THE TIME TRAVELER

Bed down like a pioneer (but with modern comforts) in a genuine Conestoga wagon, a heavy covered wagon used extensively in the exploration of United States and Canada in the late 18th to 19th centuries, or in a 1950s Seaboard Air Line Railroad caboose, both which have been converted into cozy guest houses.

THE ECO-ADVENTURER

Spend the night in a repurposed shipping container that has been transformed into a modern and sustainable “tiny home,” or unwind in a jacuzzi tub high above the ground in a cabin treehouse boasting bird’s-eye views from the outside decks.

Off the

BEATEN PATH By Claire Barrington and Gwynnie Ball

With its lush forests, towering stone crags and gushing waterfalls, it’s not at all surprising that the Hocking Hills has become one of the most frequented natural oases in the country. But for all its popularity, the area still has a few well-kept secrets — many of which can be found tucked into the wooded acres of the Hocking State Forest. Break away from the pack and make your way to one of these lesser-known hidden gems for some tranquil trail time.

AIRPLANE ROCK

A mile-long majestic journey leads you to a magnificent rock formation and breathtaking view. Expect to enjoy a range of flora and fauna as you stroll by a meadow and continue through the forest. While atop the rock’s outcropping, you’ll experience a 180-plus degree view of Crane Hollow that will have you soaring.

Leave No

TRACE By Karen Raymore

I

remember my first experience with a state park. I was a Brownie — an entry level Girl Scout. My mom was a troop leader and we had summer day camp at the Kankakee River State Park. I fell in love with nature that summer. When I got my driver’s license, I drove out to the park every chance I got. That park is where I went to think through the labyrinth of teenage dilemmas. Nature equaled wisdom, and being surrounded by wisdom just made sense. As an adult, I joined my friends on camping weekends. I cherish memories of sitting around a campfire under a canopy of stars surrounded by friends laughing at bad jokes. The sounds of laughter from other campsites made us all feel like families among nature. My parents gave my husband and I a pop-up camper for our

14

1 - 80 0 -H OCKIN G

wedding gift. It quickly became our favorite and most used wedding gift. We towed that popup through dozens of states to camp in national and state parks. We found the peace and serenity of being surrounded by nature very romantic. Making sure our parks and natural areas are around to share their wisdom for centuries is our obligation — a thank you for all Mother Nature shares with us. That’s why I believe in the seven principles of Leave No Trace. They are all just common sense. Every park I have visited in my life feels like an old friend — the kind you can go years without talking to and, when you do, it’s like no time has passed. So I treat nature like that treasured old friend. Good people take care of old friends, so please follow these simple, common-sense principles outlining the right way to treat your old friend, nature.

THE 7 PRINCIPLES AHEAD AND PREPARE 1. PLAN Your trip will be a lot more pleasant with a little planning. Know what the weather is going to be, what supplies you’re going to need and the lay of the land. And of course, be prepared to leave no trace of your visit.

OF 2. DISPOSE WASTE PROPERLY

Would you go to your friend’s house and spread your garbage on their yard? Of course not, so don’t do it on your old friend nature’s yard.

3.

TRAVEL AND CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES

Stay on the trail. Camp only in designated places. This will protect you and your old friend nature.

4.

5.

LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND

Would you help yourself to your friend’s possessions? Of course not, so don’t take nature’s possessions. Leave the stones, trees, plants and artifacts there for the next visitor to discover. Yes, stone stacking is trendy, but when you move those stones to leave your personal mark on nature, you may be moving someone’s home. Stone stacking can disrupt a delicate ecosystem. No carving your initials into cave walls or trees, either. Would you carve your initials in the side of a friend’s house? Take a picture, it lasts longer.

MINIMIZE CAMPFIRE IMPACTS

There’s no need for a bonfire. A small, responsibly managed campfire makes the canopy of stars far more visible. For backpack camping, consider a small camp stove. You won’t have to haul wood and you won’t run the risk of not being able to cook dinner. Speaking of wood … buy it where you burn it. Bringing firewood from outside the area you are visiting can contribute to invasive species harming healthy trees.

6.

RESPECT WILDLIFE

7.

BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHER VISITORS

Let’s face it, no one wants to be the idiot in the viral video getting chased by a bear. Leave wildlife alone. It’s called “wild” life for a reason.

You may love falling asleep to Van Halen blasting from your phone, but no one else wants to hear it. Respect the parents of young kids trying to get them to sleep. Respect the solo traveler absorbing the peace and wisdom of nature. Behave as you would in any sacred space or friend’s home. Be nice.

Before you visit any natural area, whether it’s for an hour or a week, get familiar with the seven principles of Leave No Trace at lnt.org. Help out your old friend nature — it’s the least we can do considering all nature has given us.

Hocking Hills State Park

H

ocking Hills State Park is filled with majestic examples of nature’s handiwork. Look for animal tracks on snow-covered trails, admire frozen waterfalls and bask in the season’s peaceful beauty. Bring a camera to capture the beautiful stillness of nature in this season. While winter’s beauty is undeniable, the early sunset and cold weather can take a toll. A getaway in a cozy cabin can be the perfect remedy. Spend time reading around a fire, playing board games with family and friends, and

taking time to slow down. The Hocking Hills region is uniquely qualified for a rejuvenating retreat with multiple spa, massage and wellness services available. Book a massage right at your cabin or take a short drive for more relaxation services like halotherapy in a salt cave. After relaxing nights in and winter walks, warm your soul with visits to wineries, breweries and local restaurants. Enjoy luscious fare during the Hocking Hills Comfort Food Cruise, an annual six-day fete of gastronomic delights that takes place in January.

BUNDLE UP

Winter’s no fun if you’re freezing. Hocking Hills State Park naturalist Brittney Street and manager Robin Donnelly offer expert advice on keeping frigid temperatures at bay while enjoying the beauty surrounding you.

1

2 3

Dress in layers. Although the cold is not extreme, temperature changes can be as much as 10 degrees lower in the gorges. “I like to wear three layers,” Street says. “I start with a thin, tight shirt and leggings next to my skin to keep the heat in, followed by pants and a long-sleeved tee or sweatshirt, and wool socks with toe warmers. I top it off with a waterproof jacket. Be sure to bring earmuffs, a hat and a thick pair of gloves.” Wear waterproof, insulated boots equipped with ice cleats. “Some of the staircases are nearly impossible to walk down in winter,” Street says. “Attaching metal cleats to your boots provides an extra grip that helps with traction.”

FROZEN IN TIME

To professional photographer and Logan resident Bud Schrader, winter is the ideal time to visit the Hocking Hills. “I love the quiet,” he says, “and the feeling of being alone with nature.” Winter hikes are also a great time to break out the camera. Schrader offers these tips for taking stunning shots: • Don’t miss Old Man’s Cave. “If you’re there when the ice has formed on the trees after a fresh snow, and there’s a glimpse of sun, it’s perfect.” • Wear hunting gloves that double as mittens. “Nothing’s more frustrating than trying to change camera settings when you’re wearing bulky gloves.” • Carry a tripod. “Walking here can be hazardous. Not only does a tripod help me frame photos better, it acts as a walking stick, too.”

Don’t forget the shades. “The glare of bright sunlight reflecting off snow can be uncomfortable,” Donnelly says. “You don’t have to wear your favorite sunglasses all the time, but it’s good to have them.”

Bonus tip: Always exercise caution when hiking in the winter. Assess weather conditions before deciding to head out, and take it slow on the trails. Exp loreHoc k i n g H il l s. c o m

DRINK

Hocking HIlls Winery

IN THE

SIGHTS The intoxicating sights, sounds and smells of Hocking Hills need not end after a gratifying day spent exploring. Southeast Ohio also happens to be fertile ground when it comes to distinctive places to sample craft beer and local wines. By Douglas Trattner

Shade Winery Le Petit Chevalier Vineyards and Farm Winery

BREWERY 33

It’s hard to miss this roadside brewery thanks to a conspicuous grain silo that points the way. Those who follow the signs are rewarded with an attractive tasting room, a generously proportioned patio and an impressive offering of brews — from pale ales and porters to limited-run barrel-aged beauties.

HOCKING HILLS WINERY

Since opening the doors in 2013, this winery has racked up an impressive collection of medals for its wines, many of which feature fruit from the West Coast. The setting, just steps from the Hocking River, is peaceful, pastoral and pleasantly forested.

ROCKSIDE WINERY & VINEYARDS

Grab seats inside the rustic tasting room or outdoors on the patio overlooking the tidy rows of wine grapes. Unwind with a flight, glass or bottle of estategrown wines like Sunset Blush, Old Grandstand and Legacy.

Little Fish Brewing Company

LE PETIT CHEVALIER VINEYARDS AND FARM WINERY

Guests would be forgiven for thinking they’ve stumbled onto a small family-run winery in France’s Loire Valley, where coolclimate grapes are coaxed into appealing wines. This verdant, lovingly tended plot offers a selection of estate-grown wines that careen from dry to semi-sweet to full-fruit refreshers.

LITTLE FISH BREWING COMPANY

There are a million little reasons to fall in love with Little Fish — chief among them are the farmhouse-style and sour ales made with Ohio-grown grains and hops. Equally impressive is the farm-totable kitchen and the convivial setting that blends rugged Northwest appeal with Midwestern charm.

MANCHESTER HILL WINERY

The McGrath family’s establishment is known for hand-crafted wines, great food and even better service. Manchester’s local wines and hard cider pair beautifully with a house meat and cheese board and live music on the lawn.

DOUBLE EDGE BREWING CO.

Located in downtown Lancaster, Double Edge sports a sleek, urban vibe. There is plenty of seating in the contemporary taproom, but also on the sidewalk and alley patios. Fill your glass with a balanced German lager, juicy IPA or tongue-tingling sour.

SHADE WINERY

Double Edge Brewing Co.

The Dix family doesn’t settle for anything short of excellence when it comes to the wine, food and environment at this charming Athens-area vineyard. Be sure to ask about the “Chef’s Special” at the restaurant.

Leave No Trace

HINDSIGHT: The Art of Looking Back JANUARY 29 – APRIL 24, 2022

CHRONICLES THE Great Depression AND THE Pandemic MAY 21 – AUGUST 28, 2022

The 7 Principles

1. Plan ahead and prepare. Check the weather forecast and research the supplies you’ll need. Familiarize yourself with the land and be prepared to leave no trace of your visit. 2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces. Stay on the trail — this is for your protection and nature’s. 3. Dispose of waste properly. Would you leave your garbage on a friend’s yard? Of course not, so don’t litter in your old friend nature’s yard. 4. Leave what you find. Would you help yourself to your friend’s possessions? Of course not, so leave the stones, trees, plants and artifacts there for the next visitor to appreciate. Don’t carve your initials into trees or stack stones, instead preserve the memory with a picture.

OHIO THE START OF IT ALL

SEPTEMBER 24 – JANUARY 30, 2022

5. Minimize campfire impacts. There’s no need for bonfires; keep it small and easily manageable. Buy your wood where you burn it or consider using a small camp stove. 6. Respect wildlife. Let’s face it, no one wants to be the guy in the viral video getting chased by a bear. Leave wildlife alone. 7. Be considerate of other visitors. You may love falling asleep to Van Halen blasting from your iPhone, but families and solo travelers may not. Behave as you would in any sacred space and be kind to others enjoying the outdoors.

Also come and view the historic parlors in the Reese-Peters home. FREE ADMISSION: Wednesday–Friday, 11am–4pm; Sat & Sun, 1–4pm 145 E. Main St. | Lancaster, Ohio | 740-681-1423 | www.decartsohio.org Exp loreHoc k i n g H il l s. c o m
