Fayette County is greening up for spring, so why not break for some putting practice or nine holes at The Greens Golf Course, with more than 3,400 yards of golf on a historic course that opened in 1922. After tee time, reserve some free time at the on-site Champion’s Grill, which serves pub favorites. If the weather isn’t cooperating, the grill will offer golf simulators and hosts events like Taco Tuesdays.

Jones Farm Market is open for business with an evolving offering of seasonal produce and fresh eggs. Take home quality meats and tempting baked goods, along with handmade soaps, candles and local sundry items. Get out and stroll through Shaw Wetlands, where you’ll spot critters like bunnies, wonder at dragonflies and hear a chorus of frogs.

A peaceful -mile boardwalk includes a seasonally changing storybook trail. The 32-mile Paint Creek Recreational Trail on a nearby abandoned B&O Railroad corridor connects all the way to Chillicothe.

If your four-legged traveler is itching for an outing, the Dog Park at Christman Park provides an off-leash runaround space in Washington Court House. The fenced-in Destination Dog Park in Jeffersonville features agility equipment and dog water fountains within the Destination Outlets property.

Carve time for the Main Street Fayette Cupcake Walk to sample sweets from 10-plus bakers, listen to live music, nosh on eats from local food trucks and enjoy DORA Drink & Stop locations. If a “smashing” affair is more your taste, the Courthouse Crash Smash It Demolition Derby at Fayette County Fairgrounds in April showcases Street Stock teams.

from fishing to hiking. Visit the historic presidential Harding Cabin on site or participate in a range of free nature programs.

Cool down at Eyman Park’s splash pad, where you’ll also find skateboarding, basketball, a walking path and two stocked ponds for fishing.

Get crafty at White Fence Gallery. Invite some friends along for a painting class and go home with a creative souvenir of your experience.

Toast to Summer with the

annual wine tasting and art event with local eats and drinks, live music and a drone show held at the Fayette County Airport the fourth Saturday in June. And don’t miss the Fayette County Fair the third week in July with harness racing, livestock, art, crafts, carnival food of all kinds and rides.

Fireworks light up the night across Fayette County at Fire in the Sky in Washington Court House on July 3 and in Jeffersonville on July 4.

A destination patch, South Plymouth Pumpkins offers crops of pumpkins in many varieties and festivities including animal visits and hayrides.

Starting May through October, the Fayette County Farmers’ Market is an event in itself with live music, kids’ activities and prepared food — alongside rows of fresh produce, meats, eggs, baked goods and products from local artisans.

Go on a treasure hunt via the geocache history trail from the Fayette County Historical Society. With 13 caches, the GPS-driven experience includes clues and references to landmarks, sharing stories along the way. Pick up a passport for hints on general cache locations at the Fayette County

Museum, which is known as “the showplace of Washington Court House.” The museum, open on the weekends or by appointment from April to September, displays 14 rooms containing pieces depicting the county’s history. Climb the spiral stairs for a panoramic view of the city.

Tuck into a book and explore the historic Carnegie Public Library — where history meets the digital age with vast collections, engaging programs and a helpful resource desk if you’re looking for suggestions.

Fall is always in the air the third weekend of September during the Scarecrow Festival in downtown Washington Court House, complete with music, food, rides, games, vendors and classic cars. Get festive in the beer garden or get moving and register for the annual United Way of Fayette County 5K and 10K Walk & Run.

The “platform” in this homey place’s name refers to the opportunity small businesses have to get their wares in front of the community. In addition to sipping a Platform classic Lumberjack (cinnamon, maple and vanilla latte) and interacting with all the locals and newcomers, you can grab tea from Adagio Teas and buy a lip balm from Honeyrun Farm

Get into the groove at this welcoming, hip spot that takes its music as seriously as its coffee. Yes, there are record covers decorating the walls and there’s a record player here, too. Try their signature Broken Record (“because it’s one you’ll want to drink on repeat”) made with local honey, house vanilla, cream and a touch of cinnamon.

Depending on the day (or mood, perhaps), one could order a cup of coffee here, a bespoke wedding cake or any scrumptious baked good in between. While making your decision, start with a café mocha, made with Columbus’ Crimson Cup Coffee’s beans. What started as an idea for a boba tea food truck transformed into the brickand-mortar location of Kitty’s Catfe. In partnership with Fayette Regional Humane Society, Kitty’s Catfe is a spot to grab a boba tea and play with (or adopt!) a feline friend. Among the cats, find paintings, crafts, board games, books and even Gacha-Gacha — Japanese capsule toys — at this spot on North Main Street.

What’s it like to work with your family?

Working with family is always interesting! My mom and dad come in once in a while, but they’re mostly retired. They help with my kids, but they do a lot of help with the catering. My two older girls are there, and they help get everything done.

Do you have any personal favorites on the menu? What do you recommend?

That depends on the day and that depends on my mood! You can never go wrong with

pulled pork. But my favorite right now is the brisket, just because we changed the way we prepared it when we reopened. It’s just phenomenal. You can get the brisket as a wrap, sandwich or entrée.

What’s your favorite part of running the business?

The customers — seeing the enjoyment on their faces, the joy when they get something they really like or when they have a great experience. Seeing guests excited and happy, that’s the most rewarding part.

Why was it important to you and your family to continue the restaurant after you closed briefly in 2022?

My parents retired as owners at the end of 2019. We made it through the pandemic, but we closed for a little while to regroup. Then we saw it was important to be there for all the guests — the people we befriended and all our regulars. It became evident that we were very much an important part of the community. We reopened last June with a totally different concept, as fast casual. The ordering process in and of itself is very quick now, but that doesn’t change anything once you sit down. So even though the service style is a little different, you still get that same feeling of being at home.

Plan your big day at Pine Lodge LLC for versatile indoor and outdoor ceremony options, with two distinct venue layouts in the same place. String your own lights or lanterns outside to gather under the glow of for nighttime receptions at Pine Lodge for a magical woodland feel, or fit 350 comfortably in the lodge. If you’d like your backdrop to be in full bloom, book your wedding or other event at Wolf Run Acres in the spring or summer, when the wildflowers cover the property in vibrant color.
