EXPERIENCE

The one big thing I’ve discovered in all my years of travel and leading tours is that everyone loves a good trail. There are always so many great places to go, things to do, foods to eat — that it can just get overwhelming. That’s why I love a passport. The Type A personality in me loves a good checklist, and Experience Columbus’ seven di erent trails provide a wonderful passport for everything from neighborhoods to sculptures, pizza shops to distilleries, co ee to hiking spots.

Over the past several years we’ve managed to hit up all the trails, and here are some highlights from each one!

First o : the Columbus-Style Pizza Trail. People get passionate when it comes to defending their regional pizza styles, and Columbus is no exception. Our pies are thin-crusted, topped from edge to edge, and cut into easy-to-sample squares. It’s hard to say no to any of the pizzerias, but we especially love Bexley Pizza Plus; JT’s Pizza, Pub & Patio; and the original location of Massey’s Pizza in Whitehall.

I often joke that my goal in life is to travel around the world and drink co ee in di erent places, and the Columbus Co ee Trail has helped me accomplish that locally. The trail guides you to wondrous ca eine: Ohio maple lattes at Brioso Co ee, killer espresso at Florin Co ee, delicious nitro cold brew at Crimson Cup and everything in-between.

Over the course of 10 years, Columbus’ distilling scene has grown to seven diverse distilleries that have netted dozens of awards. The Columbus Distillery Trail o ers an introduction to each one, from tours to cocktails to tastings. Go for Middle West Spirits’ Wheat Whiskey, Echo Spirits’ aged rums, High Bank Distillery’s amazing blended whiskeys, Noble Cut’s cellos and more.

Echo Spirits Brioso Co ee Blogger Nick Dekker shares tips for exploring the city following Columbus’ experience trails.

My family and I are big fans of central Ohio’s many parks and trails. They o er inviting explorations any time of year, and the Columbus Outdoor Trails Pass helps us consolidate our checklist of adventures, whether we’re looking to ride bikes on the former rail lines on Hilliard’s Heritage Trail, find murals on the Camp Chase Trail or bird-watch at Glacier Ridge Metro Park. We love that many of the trail stops connect with local restaurants, bars or markets to augment our adventures.

Even as someone who works in the arts, I’m amazed at the breadth of live music in Columbus. Every night you can visit giant arenas or intimate bars and find stellar artists, and the Columbus Live Music Trail brings together the best finds. So many to choose from, but we love underground jazz at Ginger Rabbit, great local artists at Natalie’s Grandview and anyone gracing the stage of Land-Grant Brewing’s beer garden.

The Mona Lisa mural has long been the icon for the Short North, but it’s amazing how much stunning public art has infused the neighborhood over recent years! I almost can’t keep up with every mural or sculpture found on High Street and around back alleys, but the Short North Arts District Art Trail has provided an excellent guide to find them all.

I’m all about using public art as a motivator to explore hidden gems, and I appreciate how the CBUS Soul™ Sculpture Trail features a rich collection of pieces by African American artists across the city. I love Omar Shaheed’s depiction of families and Queen Brooks’ African Portal in the Kwanzaa Playground.

Craft with friends old and new during themed hands-on events at Wild Cat Gift & Party that include spooky decorations and holiday ornaments.

Feel the heat and make marvelous crystalline creations at Glass Axis, which will open a new studio on the south side of the city by October 1. “We’re really excited to be moving into Steelton Village, which is truly embracing creative businesses,” says Glass Axis executive director Melody Reed. “The area is poised to become a popular Columbus destination.”

Get ready to say “I Do” to your partner in a style all your own by crafting personalized wedding bands at The Smithery, and make memories guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Now’s the time to turn that creative concept you’ve been thinking about into reality at the Idea Foundry, a place where artists, techies and entrepreneurs of all skill levels share talents and become experts at crafting everything from furniture, sculpture and jewelry to motorcycles, 3D printers and everything in between.

Grab a hammer, nails and a cocktail, and settle in at Makers Social, an interactive bar that combines creating a DIY project you’ll be proud of — ranging from necklaces to leather clutches to serving trays and so much more — while partaking of “Moscow Tools,” “Screwdrivers” and other cleverly crafted libations.

meet Celeste Malvar-Stewart

Celeste Malvar-Stewart didn’t know what to expect when she moved from New York City to Columbus about nine years ago. What she discovered was a city that was rich with fashion designers and its own sense of style.

to

“There are so many independent designers here who are establishing style in the Midwest, which is really giving big cities a run for their money,” says the fashion designer and Columbus College of Art & Design professor. “We have such potential to really be globally recognized in terms of the quality and caliber of the work — and the imaginative artisanal aspects of design.”

She points to local designers such as Crystal Zhang, Voszi Douglas and CCAD alumna Tracey Powell as people who are doing very interesting things.

“I just love her fresh, sleek, city sort of look,” says Malvar-Stewart of Powell. “She’s kind of edgy and playful, but it’s all very luxurycaliber work.”

When it’s time for Malvar-Stewart to go shopping, her focus on sustainability usually draws her to thrift stores such as Rag-O-Rama.

“It’s one of the best thrift stores,” she says. “Every time I go and every time I take someone, we always find something fantastic. Like we just found like this really cool satin bomber jacket the last time we went!”

ON STAGE WITH EDWAARD LIANG

From beloved classics, including The Nutcracker and Romeo & Juliet, to riveting works of choreographic innovation from Twyla Tharp, Ulysses Dove and Justin Peck, BalletMet remains renowned for bringing world-class dance to central Ohio in inclusive ways — and this season is no exception. Artistic director Edwaard Liang discusses his dedication to diversity and the places he loves in Ohio’s capital city.

The upcoming season is clearly an exciting and diverse one. How did you decide which ballets to include?

I’m really glad you brought up the word “diverse.” I always like to bring not only a varied repertoire to audiences, but also give a range of ballet to my dancers so they can show o their abilities and artistry. I want to present ballets that have not been seen in Columbus, or hopefully not in Ohio or the Midwest.

You have the noted distinction of being the only Chinese American artistic ballet director in the U.S. of a company that’s among the largest in the country and known for its diversity. How has BalletMet become a leader in inclusion?

I thank you for that nod. I don’t know if we’re a leader, but I love that we’re part of the conversation. Even before the movement forward to diversity began

in earnest, the dedication to diversity was very pervasive at BalletMet — including hiring me as choreographic artistic director. One of our mottos is to create new work and showcase choreographers who use every color in the crayon box to be able to paint and create. I’m proud of the fact that Columbus is so forward-thinking.

Asian Voices is a key highlight of the upcoming season. What artistic delights will audiences be treated to?

Ma Cong, associate artistic director of Richmond Ballet, returns to present Flights of Fancy, a whimsical, athletic and joyous work, which will show o our dancers.

Yue Yin, founder and artistic director of New York’s YYDC and a force of nature in the studio, will bring a world premiere of her latest contemporary work that’s sure to inspire my dancers to a new vocabulary. I’m bringing back Seasons, which I choreographed last year and was well-received.

How do you like to spend time in Columbus?

My husband and I love going to Columbus Jazz Orchestra concerts and performances by the Short North Stage. We also enjoy partaking of the city’s food scene by visiting old favorites, including Chapman’s Eat Market, Lindey’s and Comune, and finding new ones.

TIPS FROM A COLUMBUS INSIDER HANNAH LEWIS

The Arena District area has evolved so much since I started visiting over a decade ago! The historic North Market is always a staple to get some of my favorites like Brezel and Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. It’s always hard to not visit Wario’s Beef & Pork whenever I’m in a five-mile radius of their window. But, if I’m looking for a more sit-down spot, The Pearl in the nearby Short North is forever a go-to; their fried chicken is just delightful.
