If you love historical buildings and old architecture, be sure to tour the City Center, where many historical buildings—such as the First National Bank (Ellerbe Building), Graif Building, Lasalle and Martin buildings—still stand. An interesting point about the original site of First National Bank (1 Civic Center Plaza, F-5), which is now surrounded by the Verizon Wireless Center and is known as the Ellerbe Room, is that it was designed by the famous architect Thomas Ellerbe. Legend has it that the infamous robber Jesse James considered robbing the bank, but it was too busy. He went on to NorthÀeld, where he was later caught by police.

HISTORY OF GREATER MANKATO

HISTORY OF GREATER MANKATO In 1880, Mankato was the fourth largest city in Minnesota with a population of 5,500. Today, more than 50,000 people call Mankato and North Mankato home. North Mankato sits across the river from Mankato and was established in 1898. Mankato and North Mankato have many historical attractions that are must-sees for visitors. Mankato was inhabited by Dakota Sioux when Parsons K. Johnson and Henry Jackson staked claim to the city in 1852. Mankato was originally named “Mahkato,” meaning greenish-blue earth, by early inhabitants, but legend says it may have been accidentally changed due to a typographical error made by a clerk. Mankato was settled at the conÁuence of the Minnesota and Blue Earth Rivers. The land was purchased in a treaty between the Dakota and the government. In 1862, the government broke this treaty, which led to the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862.That conÁict resulted in the largest mass execution in U.S. history, the site of which is commemorated by the statue of the Buffalo at Reconciliation Park (100 E. Main Street, F-5). 2012 marked the 150th year since the US-Dakota War. OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES The rolling hills of the lush Minnesota River Valley sport many wonderful trails for walking, running, hiking, biking, in-line skating and more. Many of the local parks have pathways of their own as well. For a full listing of local parks and their amenities please visit our website visitgreatermankato.com under ‘Where to Play.’ Don’t forget about our other outdoor adventures like kayaking down one of the rivers in our river valley or downhill skiing this winter at Mount Kato.

Biking

For biking enthusiasts, Greater Mankato features some of the best trails in the state and scenic roadways with wide shoulders and little to moderate traffic. Our trail system offers a spectacular view of areas that may not always be explored, especially if you stick to the roads. Trail users will follow streams and cross upland and wetland areas, where one may see all kinds of wildlife. You never know what is around the next bend. Come see why Mankato and North Mankato have been designated a "bronze" Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists, Washington, D.C. Our popular Greater Mankato Bike Guide offers maps of the trails and paths around the community and suggested biking loops.

For your Greater Mankato Bike Guide, please call 507.385.6660

Snowbiking is gaining popularity in the biking world. Snowbikes or “fat bikes” typically have tires about four inches wide which allow for more flotation on packed snow trails. Snowbiking is best along packed snowmobile trails or frozen rivers and lakes. Always use caution when on frozen rivers and lakes.

Mountain Biking Mount Kato Before the snow flies and after it melts again, Mount Kato turns its attention to mountain biking. Slightly more than seven miles of mountain-bike trails are accessible during the non-winter months. The trails are open from sunrise to sunset. Call 507.625.3363 or visit www.mountkato.com for more information.
