EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE JOHN L. LENGERMAN

It has been another successful year for the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce in 2014 and we have many to thank for that accomplishment. I’d like to start first with the Executive Committee of the Board, the Board of Directors, our Committee Chairs and all of our Committee Members and last but certainly not least all of our members. Thanks to all for your support. Our mission at the Chamber is simple: “Advancing Business. Supporting Community”. We have lived that mission since our beginning in 1928. Chambers got their start in the 1700’s in Europe when businesses faced numerous challenges from various sources. They chose to band together to accomplish what they couldn’t do alone. One of the first Chambers in the United States was the New York Chamber which was formed in 1768 and is still a very strong group of businesses focused on solutions for building stronger businesses while improving the communities which they serve. The Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce is the third largest Chamber in the St. Louis area and the largest in the Metro East according to the 2014 – 2015 Book of Lists published by the St. Louis Business Journal. With that ranking comes the responsibility to be a leader in our region. The Chamber demonstrated that leadership in many ways last year that included providing backpacks for school supplies to hundreds of students; participating in Belleville’s 200th Birthday; holding its 15th Annual Leadership Belleville nine-month program; engaging business leaders and concerned citizens in conversations; building relationships with other leaders within the region and constantly offering educational and networking opportunities for our members. As our region continues its recovery from the downturn of our recent recession, the Chamber has been able to maintain a membership retention rate of over 90%, over five percentage points higher than the national average for same size organizations. The number speaks of the Chamber’s ability to partner and provide value for our member’s investments. The Chamber continued its high volume of activities, events and meetings during 2014 by hosting more than 225 opportunities for membership and community involvement. Once again demonstrating our mission. Leading requires consistency and strong focus. Without the professional staff at your Chamber that cannot be accomplished. Many thanks go to Wendy Pfeil, Membership Development Director; Beth Tucker, Office Manager; and Abigail Rolland, Marketing and Communication Manager. Thanks also to Cathleen Lindauer, Belleville Tourism, for her dedicated service to the Chamber and the City of Belleville. The Chamber is proud to have great partners in the City of Belleville and Mayor Mark Eckert, St. Clair County and Chairman Mark Kern and Scott Air Force Base and Colonel Kyle Kremer. These three gentlemen are terrific leaders to work with and I sincerely appreciated their support of our great Chamber. During 2014 it was my pleasure to serve under the leadership of Chamber President Andy Bridgeman of Bridgeman Insurance and in 2015 I look forward to working with incoming President Tracy McCollum of Standard Rule Promotions. Both of these individuals are great leaders in our community. Moving onto our Executive Committee is Jeff Dosier, Superintendent of Belleville Township High School District 201 as he will serve as Treasurer, leaving the committee is Chris Eckert, Eckert’s Inc. but remains on the board of directors. Thanks to these two for sharing their talents with us. At the end of each year we have some farewells. I’d like to recognize Joe Lanius, Memorial Hospital; Amy Richter, Hospice of Southern Illinois; and Wayne Barber, Barber Murphy Group for their service to our Board of Directors. We also have welcomes as Jerril Jones, Center for Racial Harmony and Mike McManus, Memorial Hospital join our board. I encourage you to review all of the reports in our publication; they will give you much detail of the workings of the committees of our Chamber. Finally, I ask that you support the members of our Chamber that are listed; they are committed to this community not only through their dollars but in sharing their time and talents to build a better Chamber.

It is amazing how quickly this year, as president of the Chamber, has gone by. 2014 has been another successful year because the business leaders and volunteers associated with the Chamber work so hard and give up so much of their time to carry out our mission. As I have become more involved with the Chamber I have seen, up close, how hard this staff works to improve our business community. This year was no exception. We had another terrific Chili Cook-off and in spite of a very cold and rainy Friday, the volunteers were able to pull it out and make it successful. They manage hundreds of other events and, somehow, John Lengerman and his staff have once again made an impossible workload seem reasonable. They certainly deserve our thanks. They are the reason this chamber continues to grow in membership and esteem and we are very lucky to have this team associated with our community! This year we celebrated our city’s 200th birthday. While Belleville has very much to be proud of, challenges remain. We are facing the potential loss of an important economic anchor in Belleville. The chamber will continue to encourage St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, our friend and neighbor for 139 of our 200 years, to stay in Belleville. St. Elizabeth’s does so much to not only drive our economic engine, but also improve our quality of life. Belleville is thriving but some of our neighbors are not. We need to address the needs of our surrounding communities to insure a mutually beneficial future for our region. The chamber executive committee is working closely with Joe Reagan at the St. Louis Regional Chamber to establish a leadership group made up of business people from East St. Louis, Alorton, Washington Park, and similar communities. While we are just beginning this overdue dialogue we are very excited about the potential benefits. One of the near term results of our teamwork may be the establishment of a strong East St. Louis Chamber of Commerce. Without the leadership of our past presidents, especially Chris Eckert, we would not be able to increase the scope of our mission. Years ago, the chamber was working hard to pay it’s bills and keep it’s members. Today, we are focused on building an organization that will be a force for improving the business climate in our city and region for the next 200 years. I am confident that Tracy McCollum is the perfect person to lead us in 2015. It has been a pleasure and a privilege serving as your president this year. Thank You!

It is hard to believe the magical 200th anniversary of Belleville has ended, but this does not mean that year 2015 will be any less exciting for the city of Belleville. The Greater Belleville Chamber looks forward to supporting businesses for the upcoming year 2015. I look forward to and am truly humbled to serve as the President of the Greater Belleville Chamber this coming year. Huge thanks to the outgoing President Andy Bridgeman, John Lengerman and his wonderful staff for the excellent leadership this past year, it will make my transition into President much easier. Serving several years as an ambassador I have witnessed an incredible organization that is focused on the success of local business and industry. The Chamber is the eyes, ears and voice of the business community. We will continue to work on a wide variety of programs including the Chili Cook-off, Otto Golf Classic, Ale Fest and the Annual Dinner. We will offer numerous networking opportunities for members such as Business After Hours, Lunch and Learn Seminars, ribbon cuttings and committee options for all interests that promote marketing and business recruitment for the city of Belleville. Over my years of service for the Chamber, I have seen the need to address the ever-growing diverse community and economy to help all businesses (small and large) in the Belleville area. I think this is the year to really concentrate on the communication between all businesses! With a new campaign in the works and the full cooperation of an always willing Board of Directors, I see the financial stability of the Chamber thriving in the near future. In 2014 the committee: - Hosted monthly Diva Nights. - Hosted the Old Town Market on 1st and West Main Street from May through November. - Hosted the 2nd Annual Brew-N-Que in downtown Belleville. - Raised money through sales of baked potatoes and pretzels at Belleville’s Bicentennial Weekend Celebration. - Raised money through their beer sales tent at the 31st Annual Belleville Chili Cook-off. - Handed out more than 1,000 hot dogs during Halloween Trick-or-Treat in downtown Belleville.

BELLE SCOTT COMMITTEE 2014 Chairperson, Valerie Thaxton, Southwestern Illinois College District 522

The mission of the Belle-Scott Committee is to promote a positive relationship between the local business community and SAFB personnel. The Committee, comprised of civilian leaders and Base leadership, was established in 1950 and is stronger than ever as it enters its 65th year! The Committee meets monthly, with meetings alternating between the Base and the local community. Highlights of the year are the annual Enlisted Dinner in May and an autumn visit to Eckert’s for an evening of farm fun for families of deployed personnel. In 2014, the committee:

- Continued its commitment to Scott Field Heritage Air Park, a $1.2M project located just outside of the Shiloh Gate, with a gift of $5,000. - Sponsored “Veterans as Employees,” a networking event for Air Force personnel preparing to separate from the Air Force. The event provided an opportunity for veterans to meet local employers and employers to become more aware of skills and abilities of veterans. - Provided a gift of $2250 to the AW CCM Special Fund, to be used to support activities for airmen, support the Belleville dorm and its residents, and to support airmen with special needs in times of crisis throughout the year.

COMMUNITY SERVICE AGENCIES COMMITTEE 2014 Chairperson, Charles Mayhew, Optimist Club of Belleville

The Community Service Agencies Committee addresses the business aspects of the not-for-profit agencies and provides a monthly networking opportunity to gain informational feedback from other not-for-profits in the area. In 2014 the committee: - Hosted September’s Business After Hours with representation from eleven agencies. - Participated in the Leadership Belleville Program’s Community Services Day.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE 2014 Chairperson, Bob Mueller, TheBANK of Edwardsville Members of the Economic Development Committee work with the community and Chamber leaders, and other organizations to promote business creation and growth, help retain existing business and jobs, stimulate overall economic growth, and improve the quality of life in the Greater Belleville Area. In 2014 the committee: - Hosted Manufactures Roundtable Discussion. - Hosted several guest speakers: Ellen Krohne, Joe Reagan, Eric Thoelke, Mark Stroker, Mike Lundy. - Performed business retention visits. - Hosted a Developer and Real Estate Tour in conjunction with East St. Louis & The St. Louis Regional Chamber.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE REPORT 2014 Chairperson: Dr. Jeff Dosier, Belleville Township High School District 201 The Education Committee addresses issues facing our educational system, both public and private. The group participates in several events to raise funds, provide needed supplies and highlight the achievements of local schools and their students to both the civilian and business community.

In 2014 the committee: - Partnered with the business community to host the 5th Annual BackPACK to School Day. - Partnered with the school districts and members of the Education Committee to provide monthly care packages and gifts to the airmen at the Belleville Dorm on Scott Air Force Base. - Provided several works of art portraying a specific time period of Belleville to celebrate Belleville’s Bicentennial.

HEALTHCARE COMMITTEE 2014 Chairperson, Josh Schobert

The Healthcare Committee focuses on educating the community regarding important healthcare topics. The committee also educated local youth on the career possibilities within healthcare. The committee brings together members within the healthcare field to collaborate on important healthcare topics and network. In 2014 the committee: - Awarded two $500 scholarships to graduating seniors with interest in a healthcare field. - Held a Chicken Bingo fundraiser in October to support the scholarship fund for next year.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE 2014 Chairperson, Mary Lamie, EFK Moen The members of the Government Affairs Committee strive to present local and regional business interest as a united voice facilitating awareness of issues involving government and business. In 2014 the committee: - Hosted three Issues & Eggs breakfasts with guest speakers: IDOT Regional Engineer Jeff Keirn, Casino Queen President Jeff Watson, NAACP East St. Louis Branch President Stanley Franklin, St. Clair County Board Chairman Mark Kern; St. Clair County Associate Judge Heinz Rudolf; St. Clair County Stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Attorney Brendan Kelly -Hosted the Government Officials BBQ, which is held each year in September, as a way to not only thank our public officials, but also as a way for Chamber members to meet and network with city, county and state officials. The cost of admission for Chamber members covers admission for one Chamber member and an elected official. - Participated at Lobby Day in Springfield

INFORM COMMITTEE Information and Networking for Members 2014 Chairperson, Amy Yan, Compu-Type IT Solutions

The INforM Committee addresses the needs of businesses by providing informational seminars during monthly Coffee Cup Connections and Lunch & Learns. The seminars are geared toward giving tools for success. Both Coffee Cup Connections and Lunch & Learns are free for Chamber Members to attend as part of their membership benefits. In 2014 the seminars covered topics including but not limited to: - Accountability, goal setting, workplace priorities, email tips, Google ad words/ SEO, YouTube, Facebook, customer service, effective communication strategies, networking

LEADERSHIP BELLEVILLE COMMITTEE 2014 Chairperson, Carol Lengerman The Leadership Belleville Committee is focused on the training process for the Leadership Belleville Program. Leadership Belleville is a nine-month training program with the goal of developing leaders within the community by: - Establishing relationships and interacting with businesses and civic leaders. - Being aware of issues affecting both business and the community - Fostering personal, progessional and community growth. - Providing opportunities to participate in the growth of the Belleville area. In 2014, the 2013-2014 class graduated with 24 new trained leaders, and 23 indviduals joined the 2014-2015 class to embark on their leadership journey. BELLEVILLE ILLINOIS TOURISM Cathleen Lindauer, Director

Belleville’s 2014 Bicentennial year was a big success thanks to our sponsors, businesses, volunteers, and Belleville’s city leaders. We are very excited to extend our personal invitation to participate and enjoy the coming events throughout 2015. Belleville Tourism goals are to market and promote the Belleville Community to visitors to bring in additional outside revenues for the City of Belleville. Belleville Tourism currently has more than 20 volunteers dedicated to providing city step-on guide and greeting services. The 2014 Holiday Season proved to be a successful one and was exceptional with the new Christkindlmarkt in downtown Belleville. Our out-of-town visitors enjoyed the following tours, events, attractions and accommodations: Victorian House Museum est. 1866; Emma Kunz House Museum est. 1830; Labor & Industry Museum est. 1837; Cathedral of St. Peter est. 1852; Belleville boasts the largest historical district in Southern Illinois; Variety Show Concerts at the Lincoln Theatre est. 1920; Eckert’s Farms; Belle-Clair Fairgrounds hosted 50 special events including monthly craft and flea markets along with the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows year-round events. Visitors also played on Belleville’s golf courses; enjoyed the art centers and Art on the Square event; 100+ Special Events and Festivals year-round; Variety, Craft and Antique Shops, Casual and Fine Dining, and enjoyed accommodations at the Bed & Breakfast Suite, Hotel, and Motels in the City of Belleville. On behalf of the Belleville Tourism Committee members and myself, I would like to thank the Belleville Chamber Board for their continued support. And a special thanks to Mayor Mark Eckert and St. Clair County Chairman Mark Kern for their dedication and efforts to the tourism industry for our city and county. They have been instrumental with new development of attractions, festivals and grants which are all important projects for tourism so that our residents and visitors can take advantage of our history, culture and heritage. SCOTT FIELD HERITAGE AIR PARK Larry Strube, President

The Scott Field Heritage Air Park has become a popular destination for visitors interested in viewing aircraft assigned to Scott Air Force Base and the Air Mobility Command. We had a significant increase in visitors this year who were interested in getting their picture taken with the STL250 cake displayed at the Air Park. It was amazing to see all the people throughout the greater St Louis area who made the trip to the Air Park for a picture with the cake. This year, in cooperation with the 375 AMW, we started the process to move the C-21 to the Air Park. We anticipate that the C-21 will be in place by Spring 2015. The Air Park has become part of the fabric of the base and community. The Air Park has hosted military promotions and retirements as well as visits from veterans who once flew the aircraft that are proudly maintained in the Air Park. If you haven’t stopped by, we encourage you to visit the Air Park and “Salute the Mobility Heritage” on display. The air park is located at the Scott AFB Shiloh Gate and is open to the general public. Page 13

In 2014, the Chamber held the 31st Annual Belleville Chili Cook-off. The event brought together more than 60 vendors, 41 businesses and more than 275 volunteers to create another successful event. SPRING ~ WWW.BELLEVILLEALEFEST.COM The Chamber hosted their 2nd Annual Belleville Ale Fest on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at a new location, the Scottish Rite. The event featured beers from more than 20 breweries, food from local vendors and live entertainment. The event was made possible with the help of sponsors and more than 70 volunteers. The Chamber looks forward to hosting this event in 2015 and continuing to improve the event.

The Chamber hosted their first womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s forum in the Spring of 2014. The forum was geared towards women, sending encouragement through various speakers and vendors to help them dive into success and continue their journey strong. The Chamber looks forward to providing this day long seminar again in the Spring of 2015 to continue to enlighten women in the workforce.

A graduate of the 2003-2004 Leadership Belleville Class, Lisa Phillipson has carried out her leadership qualities in her impact to various organizations and the community of Belleville, making her this year’s recipient of the Leadership Belleville Alumni of the Year Award. Phillipson has been an example of leadership by her dedication to her employer, Hospice of Southern Illinois, her continued support to the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce and her volunteerism to other nonprofits. Phillipson is an advocate for Leadership Belleville and encourages her employer and others to enroll an employee in the program each year.

The Citizen of the Year Award recognizes an individual member of the Belleville Community for their outstanding contributions and service. These contributions and community service include areas such as education, charitable and voluntary service, fundraising or any other area which contributes to the enrichment of the quality of life in Belleville. This award is given to honor and ensure the recipient’s contributions and commitment will provide an inspiration to all. With more than 30 years of noted contributions to the Metro East area, Carol Bartle is this year’s recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award. In 2014, many of Bartle’s volunteer efforts were for Belleville’s Bicentennial yearlong celebration. Bartle has a strong passion for volunteering and giving back to the community. One of her nominators stated, “ She brings a strong business approach, warm-hearted style and genuine desire to improve the world around her by her volunteer service.” Other organizations to whom she has donated her time and talents include but are not limited to: American Canter Society, American Heart Association, Masterworks Chorale, Zonta Club, Bethany Place, the Women’s Crisis Center, Lancer Improvement Association for District 201, Southwestern Illinois College, Family Hospice and more.
