OPEN VOUCHER PROGRAM What are Fantasy Gold Vouchers? “Fantasy Gold Vouchers” are open travel vouchers for hotel accommodations that allow you to organize your holiday in Costa Rica according to your budget. Travel vouchers are good for a number of hotels in different categories (Tourist and Superior Tourist) in each of the country’s most attractive tourist areas. Using Fantasy Gold Vouchers, you can decide where you want to stay and for how long.

How does the Fantasy Gold Voucher program work? • You can reserve the hotel of your choice in the destination you want to visit by calling the hotel directly and inquiring if they have space. Hotel accommodations are subject to availability. • Each travel voucher is equivalent to one night’s stay at participating hotels in the program.

Where to go and stay? • Choose the places to go that best suit your tastes and travel needs. • Decide how many nights you want to stay in each destination in Costa Rica. • Purchase the travel vouchers that you need for the number of nights you've decided to spend; remember each voucher corresponds to one night’s lodging. • Enjoy an unforgettable holiday traveling around Costa Rica

Important

• You cannot make prior reservations, except for the first hotel where you will stay upon your arrival in Costa Rica in San Jose. • Vouchers are not applicable for Easter Week, or the first and last weeks of the year. • Customers must make their hotel reservations directly after arrival in Costa Rica. Rooms are subject to hotel availability. • Fantasy Gold Vouchers are not refundable or transferable. • Gray Line Costa Rica will provide each customer with their Fantasy Gold Vouchers upon arrival to the country, exchanging them for vouchers from the corresponding wholesaler or travel agent.

Knowing Costa Rica Costa Rica extends majestically from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea, and its distance is barely 200 miles. Its land portion occupies only 20 thousand square miles. If you travel throughout the provinces of Costa Rica, it’s easy to notice that in no other place you shall find fields with so many variations in their landscape and climate as here. Costa Rica is one of most highly valued tourist destinations in this planet. This small piece of land includes all of the necessary components to satisfy the taste of thousands of travelers visiting each year. Costa Rica’s territorial division includes 7 provinces, which are: San José, Alajuela, Cartago, Heredia, Guanacaste, Puntarenas, and Limón. Together they offer an attractive tourist destination, of almost limitless possibilities, that include extensive rainforests, volcanoes, rivers traveling through the mountains, beaches and natural resources safeguarded by an important organization of national parks and forest reserves. Heritage and Culture Costa Rican culture is in many ways a reflection of its racial diversity. The predominant influence has long been European, which is reflected in everything from the official language -- Spanish -- to the architecture of the country’s churches and other historic buildings. The indigenous influence is less visible, but can be found in everything from the tortillas that make part of a typical Costa Rican meal, to the handmade ceramics sold at roadside stands. An important aspect of Costa Rica’s cultural legacy is their love for peace and democracy. The Ticos like to stand out that their nation is the exception in Latin America, where military dictatorships have long dominated politics. They take pride in having more than one hundred years of democratic tradition, and almost half a century without an army. The army was abolished in 1948, and the money the country saves by not expending in military issues is invested in improving the Costa Ricans’ standard of living, which has fostered a culture of social peace that makes it such a pleasant place to visit. The Ticos The Ticos, as Costa Ricans are commonly known, are famous for their hospitality, and are quite happy to live up to their reputation. They are well-educated and hard working people, who are quick with a handshake and a smile. They are well aware of the special land they have, and most likely they will help foreigners when they get lost, even explaining things that might seem bizarre to foreigners, and making their stay as enjoyable as possible. People say the Ticos are their nation’s greatest asset, and once you’ve experienced their friendliness and spontaneity, you’ll have no doubt to that regard.

Southern Caribbean

Upon visiting the Southern Caribbean zone, you will discover striking multicolored beaches of black, yellow and gray sand, extraordinarily beautiful National Parks bursting with huge tropical flowers and a blend of both Afro-Caribbean and indigenous cultures unique to the area. The zone extends from Lim贸n to the Panamanian border, with Lim贸n once again acting as the tourist hub, Hiking, surfing, snorkeling, diving and canopy tours all allow visitors to combine adventure with natural history, complemented by culture, gastronomy and music. There are stunning coral reefs, coastal vegetation, waterfalls and deep forests. Cahuita National Park and the Gandoca Manzanillo Reserve have received worldwide recognition, not only for their natural beauty but also because they are unique conservation sites in almost all of the Greater Caribbean.

Northern Caribbean

The Northern Caribbean zone comprises the Caribbean coast from Rio San Juan to the city of Lim贸n. Lim贸n city is the tourist hub for the area, where the majority of the tours for the region are organized. The main attractions are the green turtle nesting beaches of Tortuguero National Park and the amazing snook and tarpon sport fishing in the Barra del Colorado National Wildlife Refuge. This is complemented by the unique system of canals which link the port of Moin to Barra del Colorado. The canals are the only means of transportation for the area. It is an internationally recognized protected wildlife area, known especially for nesting turtles and the variety and number of birds located here. Other activities available in the zone include jungle hikes, canopy tours and kayaking the canals.

28

Nothern Plains This area is located at just a few hours from the city of San JosĂŠ and is an excellent example of the rural life in this country. Its principle activity is agriculture and cattle which makes it one of the most prosperous zones in the country. The northern plains are protected areas, wildlife refuges, volcanoes, rivers, lakes, lagoons, and waterfalls all of which have been taken into account in the best way possible with the development of tourism to maintain equilibrium with nature. Because of its high rainfall, a specific dry period cannot be established, this area possesses humid rain forests that are always green, fertile plains, natural areas that are sanctuaries for aquatic birds, reptiles, mammals, and the prehistoric fish, gaspar. Definitely, this zone is special for visitors in search of adventure as one of its main attractions is the volcano Arenal, located at 7 km. from the town of Fortuna. This impressive volcano, an almost perfect cone, has maintained constant activity for more than 4 decades and its frequent

eruptions can be observed day and night. It shows two completely different landscapes, one with exuberant vegetation that houses diverse wildlife fauna and the other complete desolation covered with lava and sand resulting from the constant eruptions. The indigenous culture, extreme sports, and the conservation of flora and fauna compose the zone: a visit to the village of Maleku, an experience with canopy, whitewater rafting, hiking over hanging bridges, visiting waterfalls either on foot or by horseback, sport fishing, or windsurfing. One can then relax in thermal waters heated by the underground springs with temperatures of 50°C. Due to its source the water contains important minerals with therapeutic and rejuvenating properties. At the base of the volcano there are many hotels and resorts that offer commodities that adapt to their surroundings. It is one of the most sought after areas for hot water springs, mud baths, massages, spas. These hotels offer facilities for small groups, seminars, workshops, executive meetings, and because of its spectacular scenery, unforgettable theme parties and gala dinners illuminated by the colossal giant with its natural fireworks.

Monteverde

The community of Monteverde is famous for its Biological Cloud Forest Reserve and above all because it was founded by a community of Quakers in the 50’s. It is a small town located near the entrance of the cloud forest and worldwide known for its efforts in the pro of conservation and its lifestyle centered on its respect for nature. Within the mystical Monteverde Biological Cloud Forest Reserve that is perpetually green, live many species of mammals, reptiles, birds, and an immense collection of insects, as well as species of plants and trees covered in moss and decorated with orquids. All of this maintains this cloud forest in constant activity. The climate is cold and misty. Part of the adventures you can enjoy are the canopy, the hanging bridges, the butterfly museum, an ecological farm, horseback riding and local color with a visit to the cheese factory, an organic coffee plantation, an artesian coop, art galleries, open air concerts, among others. The hotels are seen through a fog and offer cozy rooms and facilities for small groups that in addition to adventure require meetings or a seminar.

Central Valley

The Central Valley, in the heart of Costa Rica, welcomes you to its capital city. It is a doorway to adventure! This region has traditionally been the favorite place for Costa Ricans to live and so the majority of the country’s population lives there. This is due to the fertility of the land, helped at the same time by the volcanoes and rivers that run through the valley. San José, the capital, is located at an altitude of 2,900 feet above sea level and the average climate is approximately 20 degrees Celsius. Nevertheless it is important to note that with the exception of the Caribbean area as well as the rest of the country there are two clearly defined seasons, one is the “dry” and the other is the “rainy” season. The economy of the valley does not consist of only one activity but a variety of activities. The city offers its visitors a great variety of activities as well of an abundance of night life, with a wide range of discos, bars, casinos, fine restaurants and stores. There are also impressive museums. The Plaza de la Cultura offers a fantastic collection of pre Columbian artifacts inside the Gold Museum. Located at one side of the Plaza is the beautiful National Theater, an architectural jewel and a national pride. A few blocks away you can find the Jade Museum which holds an impressive collection of pre Columbian jade. In San José, it is easy to enjoy walks around the city, to explore nearby volcanoes, to learn about the coffee process from the fields to the coffee cup, to discover breathtaking waterfalls with colorful butterflies, to free your adrenaline with white- water rafting or to enjoy the mysteries of the rain forests in an aerial tram. Here you can find anywhere from boutique hotels to the most luxurious 5 star hotels whose international standards afford the possibility of holding meetings, incentives and conventions. Hotels with golf courses created by well known designers and mountain resorts are all part of the menu.

Southern / Northern Guanacaste

To travel from the Central Valley to the province of Guanacaste is in itself experience. From slow winding roads to stretches of flat land where the green humid tropical forest is left behind and gives room to the dry tropical forest with the mountains outlining the horizon. The name Guanacaste comes from the word quahnacastlan, which is a tree from Guanacaste. The cultural inheritance comes from the first group of Indians that populated the area many years ago, the Chorotegas. Today many remains from these pre Columbian ancestors can be found. The climate in Guanacaste is sunny with a fresh dry breeze year round. The dry season allows prudent time for sunning and the rainy season brings with it the colorful flowering of the trees whose aromas enchant visitors. The international airport Daniel Oduber is located only a few minutes from Liberia, the capital city, and is the main reason why tourism in this region has grown due to the fact this airport receives many direct flights from the United States. Guanacaste is known for its cattle production and above all the irregularities of its coasts which generate a great diversity of beaches and coastal resources such as important attractions like wildlife refuges, scenic waterfalls, dry forests, marshlands, bird-watching, horseback riding, national parks with natural thermal waters, volcanoes, historic sites, and picturesque villages. All of the above is combined with luxurious beach resorts, golf courses, world class sport fishing and excellent facilities for special events.

Central & Southern Pacific

The Central Pacific is a narrow strip of coastline that extends from the north of Jacó to the south of Manuel Antonio. It has easy access and is just a short distance from San José, either by air or by land. It has three towns of interest and tourist development, Puntarenas, Jacó and Quepos. This area also includes the islands in the Gulf of Nicoya as the principal access to them is reached through Puntarenas. The principle economic activities are: tourism, fishing, and agriculture. This province offers tourists sun, sand, tropical beaches, fun, parties, music, and excellent food. Here you can find a series of national parks. The most visited is the National Park Manuel Antonio with impressive white sand beaches and a humid tropical forest. In addition this province has a tourist port where a great number of international cruise ships dock. This marvelous area is known to have the beaches closest to the capital city with picturesque white sand beaches surrounded by spectacular cliffs, beautiful forests and mangrove swamps at sea level. It is a region whose climate is rainy and humid giving its beaches and neighboring hills a greater biodiversity, rich in flora and fauna. The driest month is February and October is the rainiest. Because of its position it holds tropical forests of transition from the dry tropical forest to the rainy tropical forest. These ecosystems are the habitat for numerous species of plants and animals that are found in various protected areas of wildlife. From the bridge over the river Tárcoles it is possible to see crocodiles along the banks of the river. There is adventure for all tastes: if it is adrenaline you want there is rafting, exploring the forests from canopies, hiking the trails in the forests, relaxing while navigating a kayak or observing the brilliant colors of the macaws. World class sport fishing is a must here. Surfers find this site ideal for its tournaments. You will be surprised at the various scenes that this coast offers that makes it worth the time to explore, from the large crocodiles sunning to picturesque towns with street venders of fruit and plantations of palm oil among others. Luxurious hotels and golf courses are also at hand.
