Rasterize the fill content and then you can modify the fill via the layer style such as adding a bevel or stroke etc
For a layer, the pattern can also be used as a pattern overlay or used to add texture to a bevel (the former depends on the transparency setting of the pattern)
Here the style is modified to include a bevel texture using the pattern
