SUMMER LOVING Julie and Seby - 29th January 2011 Article by Johanna Osborne A PROPOSAL IN THE CRYSTAL CLEAR WATERS OF FORMENTERA, SPAIN, SAW JULIE AND SEBY START THEIR JOURNEY FROM HAPPY COUPLE TO HAPPILY EVER AFTER. “WE BOTH ABSOLUTELY ADORE THE BEACH, SO IT WAS A PERFECT PLACE TO SHARE THAT MOMENT.” AND SO THE EXCITEMENT AND PRE-WEDDING FEVER BEGAN... Wanting the sun and fresh air to play a role on their wedding day, it was only natural to plan an outdoor wedding. Their vision fell neatly into place the minute Julie and Seby visited Ruth Pretty Catering in Te Horo. The stunning gardens and many different backdrops provided incredible inspiration for the couple, who could see themselves having an unforgettable day there.

HOW WE DID IT CAPTURE:

It was important to Julie and Seby to find somewhere that met all their requirements in one go, and with Ruth Pretty they hit the jackpot; “We could tick off the beautiful venue, photo opportunities, food, alcohol, service, use of their personal home, marquee arrangement, cake, place settings and more”. And so a dream wedding was born.

CUISINE:

As the first of their friends to hold a wedding in a garden setting, Julie and Seby were excited to create a day that was unique to them. The couple held the marquee reception in another part of the grounds after the ceremony was complete. This created a wonderful continuation of the outdoor theme and made for a good flow, as guests could wander from one area to the next without hassle, all the while taking in the breathtaking scenery of the 27-acre orchard property. And thankfully the weather held up its end of the bargain for the sun-loving couple.

SETTING:

Julie and Seby say that it was not only the stunning setting that drew them to Ruth Pretty’s impressive estate, but also the confidence that it would be a seamless operation all the way through. They we were not wrong. Julie says “My planner, Renny, was so nice to deal with, and so patient with all of my questions. We also dealt with Paul Pretty who was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. And of course, Ruth’s AMAZING food is still talked about to this day. I can’t fault them, they think of absolutely everything!”

Ruth Pretty’s stunning Te Horo location also made for an ideal excuse to ask all guests to stay close by in Kapiti, which lent itself to many gettogethers the week prior, and the post wedding brunch the day after. The couple say “Destination weddings are so much fun, they have that extra special feeling of being on holiday and you can extend the celebrations further than just one day. “

to spend 10 minutes alone together, as there would most likely be no other opportunities to do so. A most thoughtful and meaningful gesture, providing precious emotional minutes the couple are likely to remember forever. Jaime-Leigh Hair and Make Up re-created the image Julie had in mind for her day perfectly. Julie was very impressed with Jamie’s calm and competent approach.

With Uncle Monkey performing for guests at the wedding celebrations, it’s little wonder everyone had a blast on the day, and well into the night.

Julie and Seby have plenty of advice for their friends who are planning upcoming summer weddings, saying “The suppliers are the experts and have been involved with many weddings prior to yours, so it is safe to hand over the reins to them – it’s their job to take the stress away!”

Toni from Bella Bloom created the wonderful flowers on the day, reaping many compliments. Julie couldn’t have been happier with how they looked; “I especially loved the way she incorporated our LOVE sign into the bridal table arrangement for us.”

Julie and Seby love summer time and head to the beach or have a BBQ with friends whenever they can. Their upcoming precious first anniversary will be spent reflecting on the wonderful day they had last summer, and how perfect it was.

Penny Towns from Inspire Photography took so many stunning photos on the day that the bride and groom were in a predicament about which ones to frame. She was also the reason the bride and groom were able 3

MEANT TO BE Lizzie & Matt – 28 May 2011 Article by Johanna Osborne

HOW WE DID IT

WEDDINGS ARE OFTEN SYMBOLIC OF A NEW LIFE TOGETHER, AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT LIZZIE AND MATT CREATED.

CAPTURE:

Their journey was an exciting one, with long distance love and precious reunions marking the early beginnings. As employees of the same company, but fatefully located in different cities – Lizzie in Christchurch and Matt in Wellington – their relationship was based on many plane flights, late night phone calls and facebook conversations. Nothing, however, could keep them apart, and March 2009 saw Lizzie join her soul mate in Wellington. Matt gallantly collected his South Island princess and her beloved cat, Scooby and drove to Wellington.

Challenges such as starting a life in a new city and commencing a new job at the same time did not deter this adventurous young woman from making the sunny seaside village of Plimmerton her home.

Their relationship going from strength to strength, Lizzie and Matt embarked on a journey of a lifetime earlier this year, which saw them make incredible memories in places as far afield as Nepal, India and Korea. “We started in Kathmandu, which was a crazy, noisy, colourful beginning to our trip. We flew across the Himalayan foothills to Darjeeling, a city set on the mountainside. We knew we were going in wintertime, but we never imagined India could be so cold!!” Nothing however could dampen the spirits of this intrepid couple, and they proceeded to travel around Northern India. This was followed by a jaunt to Goa in the South to relax in the sunshine with temperatures of up to 40 degrees. And the grand finale; a direct contrast of negative 8 degrees in the very cold city of Seoul in Korea. An adventure indeed, and the stuff lifetime memories are made of!

Their travels brought them back home safe and sound, and right into the midst of wedding planning. With the wedding date rapidly approaching Lizzie took charge, with Matt as a loyal and dedicated helper. With the assistance of wonderful suppliers and Lizzie’s positive and proactive approach, the preparations went ahead without a hitch. It was always Lizzie and Matt’s aim to create a day that encompassed their laid-back style, with the focus being very much on their love of having a good time with friends and family.

The Piccadilly Flower Company provided the perfect bouquets that were so important to Lizzie. The beautiful flowers set off the fun and frivolous colour scheme of the day, and resulted in amazing photographs. The pink and red literally “popped” off the pages. We Do Photography captured the moments, big and small, throughout the day and the company’s style and approach complemented Lizzie and Matt’s day perfectly. In keeping with a current wedding trend, Lizzie and Matt also engaged We Do Photography’s photo booth, and this proved to be a huge success with all wedding guests, providing massive entertainment value and priceless, natural, candid images to treasure forever.

Lizzie says “Right from the beginning we wanted a relaxed, informal afternoon wedding. We just wanted it to feel like a fun afternoon with our friends.” It was precisely these wishes that played an important part in seeing their wedding day take shape. Lizzie says many people commented on her level-headedness as the day crept closer. With the invaluable help of a range of fantastic experts, Lizzie was able to plan her dream wedding without the fuss or stress so many brides are afraid of. However, staying calm and not losing sight of what is most important is often easier said than done; “My advice is to remember that this day is about you and your husband-to-be. It’s not the time to be worrying about other people’s expectations or impressing people”. She goes on to say “Make sure you identify what is most important to you on the day, and then make the extra effort to ensure that aspect is perfect. For Matt it was the photography, and for me it was the flowers.” And indeed these details of the wedding, much like everything else, were flawless.

Incorporating where she comes from and her strong friendship ties, Lizzie flew to Christchurch several times to have her dress custom-made. Fatefully Lizzie’s loyal local dress maker’s home was badly affected by the earthquake, but regardless she forged ahead and completed not only the gorgeous wedding dress on time for Lizzie’s special day, but also the mother of the bride’s outfit – a true labour of love. Just like Lizzie, the dress was unique, and stylish. A 1950s halter dress that came to her knees, teamed for a short while with a faux fur jacket that was surprisingly unnecessary on this balmy autumn day, Lizzie’s weddingday-look symbolizes her carefree approach to life. In keeping with the bride’s down-to-earth style, the bridesmaids wore beautiful black dresses, fortuitously the first they tried on, fresh off-the-rack from Max Fashions, 16

ISSUE 1

complimented by a splash of colour, courtesy of red cardigans from Glassons. The overall look was stunning – fresh, beautiful and full of fun!

Like any typical bride, Lizzie savoured the build-up and pampering that led to her movie-star look on her big day. With the help of an expert team of suppliers, Lizzie had all she needed to feel beautiful and glamorous. “For me a huge highlight was getting beautiful for the day – my dress, my shoes, my flowers, my makeup, my hair, my nails – they were all just perfect!” Perfect indeed; in her images Lizzie radiates the joy and beauty seen only in those that have truly found happiness. Lizzie’s close friend Hannah Wiles of Made Up Make Up Artists was responsible for Lizzie’s screen-siren look. “It was awesome having her around helping me get ready. It also felt pretty cool to have my own makeup artist there all day – she even touched me up before the photos!” Kristy from Colours Hair Salon in Plimmerton completed the overall look, by creating the perfect hair for the gorgeous celebration.

Pre-wedding celebrations for the bridesmaids also took place in Christchurch, with Lizzie’s best friend and bridesmaid Tori organizing a casual dinner out for the excited bride. The groomsmen in turn kept it local with a visit to the popular Adrenalin Forest in Poriua. The actual wedding day dawned in splendid fashion and saw the bride and groom pleasantly surprised by the great weather. Gear Homestead, a venue attractive and cosy in any climate, really came to life on their special day; Porirua harbour resplendent in the sunshine with light reflecting beautifully for the photos. Clearly lucky not only in their union, but in the choice of their day, Lizzie says “the amazing weather was an enormous highlight. It was late autumn, and we were counting on being inside the whole day, but the sun was shining and everyone stayed outside for most of the afternoon”. Gear Homestead was the natural choice for this couple, who live only a stone’s throw from the historic venue, and were attracted to its character and charm from the outset.

By using professionals that understood their values, Lizzie and Matt were able to create a day that was a true reflection of their lives and style. Their joyful and relaxed mindset saw things literally come together, without a hitch or worry. When asked how they would describe their day the couple says “It was everything we hoped it would be, and most importantly, it was very us”. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the mark of a successful wedding.

The day was further made special in that many important people in their lives travelled to be part of their wedding, symbolic of two families coming together from different paths, as well as cities. “It was just amazing having all our nearest and dearest there – a lot of my family and friends travelled from Christchurch, and we had others travel from Australia”. 17

IN 2004 PENNY’S FRIENDS TOOK HER ALONG TO A SHOW BY POPULAR WELLINGTON BAND ODESSA. IT WAS THERE THAT THIS BEAUTIFUL GIRL CAUGHT THE EYE OF THE LEAD SINGER, AND AFTER JUST ONE LOOK PENNY ALSO KNEW SHE WAS HOOKED. FROM THEN ON SHE KEPT GOING BACK WHENEVER MATT WOULD SING. THE REST, AS THEY SAY, IS HISTORY. A FEW HIT SONGS ABOUT HIS VERY OWN “PENNY LANE” LATER, AND THE COUPLE WERE ENGAGED. AFTER ALL, HOW COULD SHE RESIST THE OPPORTUNITY TO BECOME PENNY PENDER? THE STORY OF THEIR COURTSHIP WAS EVEN CAPTURED IN THE SONGS FROM ODESSA’S ALBUM THE PRIZE.

CUISINE:

Penny and Matt spent a great deal of time arranging their wedding, which was punctuated by unique, exceptional and awe-inspiring detail every step of the way. Features of the day included a photo booth for guests, a candy bar, a trivial pursuit icebreaker table, seahorse place cards and fortune cookie favours. For added fun the invitations were a set of 10 different movie posters with the couple’s faces photo-shopped onto them, printed onto fridge magnets. Cake toppers were Han Solo and Princess Leia action figures! In keeping with the Wellington/Movie theme, the wedding photos were taken at the Embassy Theatre, while a large crowd of Saturday movie goers looked on in admiration.

The photobooth was, perhaps, one of the most entertaining parts of the wedding celebration. Jason Naylor from WeDo Photography & Design came to the reception to run it and “was a smash hit with all the guests”. People were lining up all night to get their pictures taken, and guests were able to take away some amazing memories they could physically hold on to.

Penny adds “Clarice Olckers the wedding coordinator at the Wellesley Boutique Hotel was just fantastic. I still smile whenever I think of her. She was just so patient the whole way through. She was always a joy to interact with, so helpful and always went the extra mile.” An added surprise for the delighted couple was finding their bed covered with roses, chocolates and a cheeseboard at the end of the night, all courtesy of the Wellesley team.

Aside from the many glorious touches their wedding featured, the most important thing for the couple was of course their family and friends. For this reason Penny and Matt decided to hold their wedding in the beating heart of their hometown, Wellington. At the forefront of their mind was that all their loved ones could afford to attend, and not face unnecessary travel or accommodation costs. Penny says; “We both believe strongly that weddings are all about the guests; a simple excuse to bring together everybody important in your life to celebrate all as one, for one glittering wonderful day.”

The sentimental pair tried to make everything as guest-friendly and fun as possible, and to make sure those loved ones no longer with them were remembered on this special day, the cake table candy bar was surrounded by old vintage framed family photographs of their grandparents. Penny and her mother both wore brooches owned by Penny’s Nana for the day, and her Nana’s engagement photo (from her beauty pageant days) served as inspiration for Penny’s hair and makeup, which was created by the talented Hil Cook team. The flowers of the bridal bouquet (hydrangeas) offered up a reminder of Penny’s father’s mother, who sadly passed away just a few months before the wedding.

The wedding ceremony was held at the breathtaking St Mary of the Angels where Matthew’s parents had tied the knot many years ago, and the reception took place in the near-by, conveniently located Wellesley Boutique Hotel. Penny and Matt could not rate their choice of venue more highly; “We can’t stop talking about how amazing all the staff at the Wellesley are. It absolutely made the entire experience such a delight for us, having such incredible hospitality and help from the entire team”.

It’s plain to see that two big hearts, incredible imaginations and a huge capacity for fun were the key ingredients on the day that Penny and Matt got married. A day they describe as “traditional, jubilant and wonderful”; a day they would remember forever. 28

A CAPITOL AFFAIR TO REMEMBER

MR AND MRS WINES AND DINES AT CAPITOL Article by Johanna Osborne INTIMATE IN SIZE BUT NOT IN REPUTATION, CAPITOL RESTAURANT HAS BEEN A MAINSTAY AMONGST THE WELLINGTON RESTAURANT SCENE SINCE 2002.

Priyani Puketapu. And as a “capital magazine” featuring Miss Wellington, it was only fitting to celebrate this in Capitol restaurant, awarded most outstanding restaurant 2010 by Capital Awards! A capital affair all round! .

Capitol is not only well-known for its high quality Italian inspired menu, but also for its atmosphere and overall vibe. Those on their way home from a busy day at work seek out the serene yet gently humming ambience of Capitol to unwind with a cocktail at the bar, others flock to the doors to celebrate special occasions and get-togethers with loved ones. Like a safe-haven nestled into its own neighbourhood, Capitol offers windows galore on the Wellington hustle and bustle, whilst providing a cosy setting for a decadent experience. Frequented by a vast array of people, standout fans have included Sigourney Weaver, who could not get enough of the restaurant’s mouth-watering dishes and ate there every week while filming Avatar. Other fans include Sir Ian McKellen who even declared his love for the restaurant on live TV.

Going from strength to strength, with word of mouth drawing even the most discerning diners through Capitol’s doors, the owners Rob Wilkinson and Tom Hutchison knew it was time to branch out and Capitol Catering was born in 2004. Giving in to a public demand for the same fresh, high quality dishes to be served outside the restaurant in venues and homes around Wellington, the exciting new venture made its start through humble beginnings. But word of mouth quickly saw awareness and popularity rise, and now Capitol Catering is synonymous with confidence, style and ease. Increasingly popular with brides and grooms countrywide, Capitol catering are now a first port of call for many couples wanting the quality seasonal ingredients, uncluttered, clean flavours and friendly, capable service that Capitol Catering is famous for.

Popular beyond belief, the message is loud and clear from everyone that has dined there: if it is delicious food, stylish surroundings and a great atmosphere you seek, then look no further than the divine Capitol restaurant for the complete experience.

Not many, if any, catering companies have their own restaurant, so Capitol Catering’s formula was tried and true before it even began. Simplicity is key, and it’s their no-fuss, respectful approach that makes them so popular with not only brides and grooms, but also a wide range of corporate companies, businesses and embassies around the city, who use Capitol Catering on a regular basis.

Capitol restaurant also recently set the stylish stage for our gorgeous photo shoot, featuring Miss Universe New Zealand, the ever so stunning 30

“SIMPLE WORKS WELL, DON’T OVERCOMPLICATE THINGS. ENJOY YOUR DAY WITH YOUR GUESTS”.

A bride and groom planning their big day have enough on their plate, (pardon the pun!), so Capitol Catering really know how to help every step of the way. Says Cheryl Jolly, the über-capable Catering Manager of Capitol Catering, “It’s your wedding, it’s your special day, and we want you to be happy”. Clay Toomer, Business Partner and Director of Capitol Catering adds; “Simple works well, don’t over-complicate things. Enjoy your day with your guests”.

a la carte meal, a buffet style feast, or stylish platters and nibbles, Capitol Catering has the experience and confidence to design a menu and deliver excellence on your most special day.

The thorough consultation process from start to finish means the bride and groom are listened to, and whilst advice and guidance is given, ultimately the choice is theirs. Flexibility and adaptability are certainly strengths of Capitol Catering, who can and will do almost anything to make their clients happy. All weddings catered by Capitol Catering are tailored individually to meet personal tastes and budget. Guidance and a proposal are only a phone call away!

Many brides and grooms cannot praise Capitol Catering enough, with one sharing; “Guests raved about the quality of the food and service. A special thanks to the team in the kitchen for 120 plates of perfectly al-dente risotto, and beautifully cooked fish. LIVING THE DREAM Hayley and Greg – Labour Weekend, Saturday 23rd October, 2010 Article by Johanna Osborne GREG AND HAYLEY FIRST LAID EYES ON EACH OTHER OVER 10 YEARS AGO. BOTH WERE STAYING AT A BACKPACKERS IN SURFERS PARADISE, HAYLEY WAS 18, GREG WAS 19. IT TOOK A FEW MONTHS AND THE ENFORCED COURAGE OF 10 BOURBONS FOR THE ANXIOUS GREG TO FINALLY ASK HAYLEY “TO BE HIS GIRL”. HIS TEENAGE BRAVERY PAID OFF – THE LOVING COUPLE HAS BEEN TOGETHER EVER SINCE. From then on they made a decision to do everything as a team. Hayely and Greg travelled overseas, partied in colourful places and grew up together. They have now come full circle and made their home back where they met, on the stunning Gold Coast, with their much loved dog, Lexie, joining the fun. Greg proposed to Hayley on bended knee on the shores of the stunning Cabarita Beach. Shortly before this very special moment the young man had sent Hayley’s Dad, Don, a text message reading “I’m going to ask Hayley to marry me. Hope you don’t mind?” Greg’s refreshing ways had long won over Hayley’s father, Don, and he was more than overjoyed with the news.

HOW WE DID IT

Greg and Hayley are beach lovers, so it was only fitting that their wedding would reflect that in every sense. Opting for a “rustic chic” theme, they built their wedding around what felt natural to them. Hayley walked down the aisle to Bob Marley’s “Is this Love”, which successfully set the tone for the fun, jubilant wedding weekend.

80 family and friends gathered from all corners of the world at beautiful Tarureka in Featherston. Tarureka is set on a beautiful estate amongst idyllic rose gardens and historic trees. The wonderfully restored historic barn, ‘The Loft’, boasts a chapel, banquet area, bar and dance floor, making it the ideal wedding venue. A huge guest homestead and beautiful cottage on site allowed the happy couple to turn a one-day event into a full wedding weekend of celebrations, with immediate families staying from Friday right through to Sunday. This enabled the reunited family members to share breakfasts, bbqs and banter before and after the wedding itself, making for a unique and memorable time for everyone.

Tarureka’s rolling country gardens together with implement sheds and all the assorted out-buildings provided fantastic backdrops for wedding photographs, and added a certain something extra to what was a very special and intimate occasion. Haran Photography captured the relaxed yet stylish images, which show the couple in their element amongst nature.

with an exceptional team – the food and service was quite outstanding!” The meal was presented as a “table buffet” where each table was served with its own buffet selection. This provided a great compromise between a-la-carte, and the familiar but inconvenient queuing concept at a main buffet table.

Hayley says the highlight of her wedding was her wedding planner: her dad! She explains; “Living in Australia and getting married in New Zealand was always going to be tricky, but my father took this role on so well, that I think he should change careers!” Indeed Don Sharpe did his daughter proud. Hayley communicated what she wanted, and the doting Dad made sure everything fell into place. Don organised it all - from hair and makeup to ordering cupcakes, to the DJ and catering. Hayley says “All was taken care of with no stress at my end! I could not have wished for better!” It seems the joy and appreciation was mutual, with Don adding “It was genuinely one of the best experiences I could have had. It truly is one of the last really important things that you can personally share with your daughter.”

The bride’s natural beauty was enhanced by the capable ‘The Villa Beauty Therapy’ team in Masterton – with radiant results! Travelling to the wedding venue for hair and beauty services, Hayley could not have been happier with Nicole and Latasha’s work. Popular Wellington DJ Chris Bromley from ‘Disco @ Paradise’ provided the sound system for the ceremony and speeches, and of course a great selection of music and lighting for the celebrations that ran well into the night. Hayley and Chris met as teenagers, yet knew from the outset they belonged together. With one decade already under their belt, what will the next bring? The pair doesn’t hesitate; “We want to grow old doing the things we love, have a family and keep on enjoying each other for as long as we live”. Hayley and Chris live many miles away on the sunny Gold Coast, but are unlikely to ever forget their idyllic little farm wedding on the east coast of Wellington, a weekend where lifetime memories were made and a loving family came back together to send them on their way to forever

Don explains it was just a matter of finding and securing the all-important expert suppliers, which is all it takes to turn a good wedding into a great one. After that it was simply a matter of organising the finer details. Opting to use the popular Ulli at Guten Appetit Catering in Featherston proved to be a stellar choice. Don says “He was a thorough pro in every respect 36

A HAVEN OF ALL THAT IS BEAUTIFUL MR AND MRS RECEIVES THE ROYAL TREATMENT AT SALUTE HAIR AND DAY SPA Article by Johanna Osborne | Photography by Esther Bunning AS RECENT WINNERS OF THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY AWARD FOR NEW ZEALAND’S BEST SPA, SALUTE’S SECRET TO STANDING OUT IS PROVIDING THE VERY BEST SALON AND SPA EXPERIENCE POSSIBLE, IN A BEAUTIFUL AND INSPIRING ENVIRONMENT THAT OFFERS PRIVACY, LUXURY AND HARMONY.

“The name Salute (good health in Italian) was chosen with a vision that one day I could offer a place capturing the essence of beauty and spirit for men and women” says Carl Manderson, Director of Salute Hair and Day Spa. After travelling overseas Carl was overwhelmed with the spas in Europe; “I thought why can’t we have it here? I wanted clients to feel special and truly taken care of”. And so Carl did just that; he created an environment where clients can enjoy themselves and feel a sense of occasion. His philosophy has always been very simple: make the client look and feel the most important person in the world, and do your utmost to deliver a total beauty experience that keeps them coming back for more.

Nestled like a modern day oasis amongst the hustle and bustle of Lower Hutt’s Queens Drive, you will feel an instant sense of calm envelope you as soon as you step through Salute’s majestic doors. Salute welcomes you with highly capable hands into a serene atmosphere that you will never want to leave. With a stellar team of 21 staff boasting a multitude of awards in their fields of hairdressing, make-up artistry and comprehensive beauty services, clients are spoilt for choice. 38

AS OSCAR WILDE SAID “LOOKING GOOD IS A NECESSITY IN LIFE”. AND HE WAS RIGHT.

Carl certainly knows what he is talking about – he is, after all, the hair and beauty guru in Wellington. The Salute team recently sponsored the ‘Beautiful Hair’ award at the Miss Universe show, which included the Salute team dressing all of the contestants’ hair. With three years of experience as a judge for Miss Universe under his belt, Carl knows what makes beautiful hair and skin. Salute will also be the driving force behind the scenes at the Wellington Wedding Show on October 30th, where the team will be creating hair and make up for all of the wonderful models participating on the big day. Salute was also involved in the Capital Photo Shoot featured in this magazine, styling beautiful Miss Universe NZ’s Pryani Puketapu, and overseeing her hair, makeup, nails and spray tanning.

Prescribing a programme beginning ideally 6 weeks prior to the big day, Salute would suggest a skin and body treatment plan, spa hair rituals, and the essentials such as waxing, manicures, pedicures and eye treatments. Not to be forgotten: the de-stressing factor a course of massages can offer. The end result of this enjoyable journey promises to be luminous skin, shiny hair and a beautiful canvas for makeup – all which will be captured in your wedding photographs. Never has a bride-to-be left Salute’s doors looking less than fabulous!

For a bride, few things are more important than looking radiant on her wedding day. Whilst love, excitement and nerves can take the credit for much of the “glow” that she exudes on her big day, there is seldom a woman that can’t use a little help with her beauty secrets. Who doesn’t want to get pampered head-to-toe before the big day, together with an entourage of girlfriends and bridesmaids? With a vast menu of delightful treatments, it’s hard to choose which divine package would most suit you. Don’t worry, you don’t have to make the difficult choice alone – Salute provides expert advice and consultations to all their cherished clients.

But even if you don’t have 6 weeks prior to your wedding, Salute can still tailor an individual package to suit your needs – right up to the big day – with lunches and platters available on request. You’ll never want to leave! Carl adds; “My advice would be for brides to include their groom. Men are always mindful that after the wedding day there is a honeymoon. They want to be just as prepared as the bride with their waxing, exfoliating and facial treatments.” And having a male therapist on site is indeed 39

MR & MRS

an advantage, as male clients enjoy talking through their own personal programmes with somebody who understands ‘a man’s perspective’.

The merits of Salute Hair and Day Spa are endless. Your senses will instantly respond to the stunning environment, the beautiful scents and the decadent decor. Salute will see you on your way to rediscovering your state of wellbeing and relaxation, whether your visit is in aid of energising and recharging your batteries, or to beautify yourself for a special occasion. The perfect treatment plan awaits you, and you will indeed leave feeling like a million dollars – and looking even better! As Oscar Wilde said “Looking good is a necessity in life”. And he was right.

Salute is only one of two spas in the greater Wellington area to have a purpose built wet room. They also have a completely Private Retreat Room, for spa guests to relax and enjoy before and after their spa treatments. A selection of fresh fruits, nibbles, herbal teas, juices, and of course bubbles, are served. For those spa guests that prefer not to be seen leaving without makeup, Salute has a Powder Room with complimentary GHDs, blow dryer and make up. There is also an option of full hair and make-up on the ground floor in the Private Room, which can also be used for bridal parties and special occasions.

FROM PRIMARY SCHOOL TO FOREVER Felicity and Nick – 27 March 2010 Article by Johanna Osborne STYLE, ELEGANCE AND TRADITION: A COMBINATION OF NOSTALGIA AND CHIC SOPHISTICATION MADE THE UNION OF FELICITY AND NICK A PARTY TO REMEMBER! Their background reads like the classic love story. The destined pair had their first encounter in Primary school and several years later fell in love at a Wellington College dance. Fast forward 11 years and Nick pulled out of the hat possibly the most romantic proposal in the history of engagements.

HOW WE DID IT

A helicopter from Queens Wharf flew the couple to a surprise location. Landing in a field not far from Boomrock lodge, they debarked to a pathway of tea lights leading the way to a cliff edge. There, hidden amongst the greenery, was a picnic complete with miniature heaters, jackets and blankets. Nick had organised Felicity’s favourite chocolates from Shoc, delicious cheese, crackers and a bottle of Moet; all in a preprepared picnic basket, ready and waiting.

CAPTURE: Melanie Dixson & Chris McCarthy

BLOOMS: Scent Floral Boutique

CUISINE:

While watching the sun set, Nick reached again into the picnic basket and this time brought out a small wooden box. It was at this moment that it dawned on Felicity that this could actually be her long-awaited proposal. She was not disappointed; inside was a handmade ring from the Village Goldsmith in Wellington; “It was exactly what I would have chosen myself”.

Boomrock

FASHION: The Village Goldsmith

SETTING:

Perhaps what could be described as the cherry-on-top of an impeccably thought-out proposal, there was one last surprise. As it started to get dark the couple set off towards the lodge where Nick said he had a ride waiting to take them back home. Instead, inside the lodge they were greeted with

more champagne – and both their families ready to toast to them! Nick had arranged for them all to come and celebrate, and there were lots of tears and hugs to mark this very special moment in time.

When asked what the highlight of the wedding planning was, Felicity doesn’t hesitate; “The wedding show! I had always wanted to get married and going along to these amazing shows as the bride-to-be with my mum and bridesmaids was really fun and quite special.”

As a couple that met at a young age, Nick and Felicity have experienced much of their lives together already, and in turn created a solid foundation for the future. Felicity explains “I love the fact we have shared so many milestones together, high school balls, graduating, first jobs and first house”.

The wedding day itself was steeped in history and family ties. The ceremony was held at St Barnabas in Roseneath, where Nick’s parents were married and where Nick himself was christened. The reception that followed was of course held at the very special Boomrock Lodge in Ohariu Valley, where the famous proposal had taken place 2 years earlier. The couple also hold other ties to this venue which further enforced the sentimentality on the day. When younger, Nick worked at Boomrock, and Felicity used to look after the owner’s children. She says “We always wanted to get married at Boomrock, it is such an amazing location, and every detail is carefully thought-out by the staff there. They made the whole process really stress free.”

Felicity has been planning her big day since she was 5 years old. Therefore organisation and inspiration were certainly not a hurdle. The couple’s goal was to have an elegant and stylish day that was also fun and enjoyable for all. Felicity says “Everything followed after we chose our invitations. Having the colours set to pink and black, it made a lot of other decisions really easy”. Nick once again showed his creative imagination and was enthusiastically involved with the planning throughout. When explaining what their priorities were in selecting suppliers the couple say “We decided early on what was important to us, and therefore what we would spend the most money on. Things like the rings and photos were what we had left after the day, so we put a lot of effort into getting these right.” Nick and Felicity’s images were captured beautifully by Melanie Dixson & Chris McCarthy. As born and bred Wellingtonians, the photos showcase some of the city’s most picturesque landmarks, a fitting choice for the couple who plan to make Wellington their long term home.

The couple’s 88 guests dined on an impressive menu, provided and overseen by Boomrock’s Wedding and Event Coordinator Jess Lancaster and her capable team. When asked to reflect on their wedding, the high school sweethearts share; “A lot of people say nothing changes when you get married, but we think it does a little in a good way. Being married creates a special bond and feeling between a couple”. And perhaps that’s why standing on top of the Eiffel Tower on their honeymoon was even more special, because Felicity had her brand-new husband Nick right by her side! 44

NATURAL MOMENTS, REAL PHOTOS ... STUNNING RESULTS MR AND MRS TALKS TO DE LA FUENTE PHOTOGRAPHY Article by Johanna Osborne AS ONE OF WELLINGTON’S MOST COVETED PHOTOGRAPHERS, THE DUO PHOTOGRAPHY TEAM SURE KNOW HOW TO TAKE YOU ABOVE AND BEYOND YOUR WILDEST EXPECTATIONS. ANY BRIDE AND GROOM LOOKING FOR A SPECIAL WAY TO CAPTURE THE PRECIOUS MOMENTS OF THEIR MAGICAL DAY SHOULD LOOK NO FURTHER THAN ‘DE LA FUENTE WEDDINGS’ – THE WEDDING DIVISION OF THE DYNAMIC DUO BRAND.

Long gone are the days of cheesy, clichéd wedding photos, and more than ever brides and grooms everywhere are searching for images that will be completely personalised to them, and will become a source of pride and joy in the future. This is exactly what Adrian de la Fuente offers. He knows what he is talking about, born with a camera in-hand and a long history in photography ever since, having worked as a photojournalist in far-away lands and having taught his craft to many others. During his thorough consultation with the couple, Adrian always asks the questions that matter; “I say to them if you wind the clock forward 25 years, what do you want to remember? It’s about relevance and creating something unique”. For one couple this entailed performing with their band: so cue a rock-star vibe photo shoot that only De la Fuente Weddings could pull out of the hat. Adrian sums it up perfectly when he says “We are not for everyone. We are not typical wedding photographers, we’re different... we are real, natural, spontaneous, active, punchy, personal and each wedding is totally original.”

For those looking for a unique, personalised, non-clichéd approach to picture taking, ‘de la Fuente weddings’ are the people to use. From the VIP treatment you will receive the moment you walk through the door and the many extra touches along the way, to the team’s amazingly unique and extraordinary talent in capturing unforgettable images, this company sure knows how to amaze – and most importantly, how to give you those photos you will treasure a lifetime.

There is no tried and true recipe, and most certainly not a standardised cut and paste ceremony. This unique approach has made de la Fuente wedding photography legendary. Take for example the ER Doctor and the Nurse, both who work in the Wellington hospital and live in Newtown. Adrian’s creative approach gave the pair the perfect unique backdrop to their images – photos in their natural habitat, outside the hospital, playing around with the ambulance and along the colourful streets of their beloved Newtown home, with several shots of the married couple dancing along to street buskers. These photos were completely original and tailored to suit this specific couple, capturing their lives and personalities perfectly, and that is, after all, exactly what every couple wants: memories that completely capture them. De la Fuente Weddings have the skill to unobtrusively grab hold of a special moment in time, so that it will become a memento forever.

de la Fuente team guiding you on your special day, then you can expect to receive coaching on how to have your photo taken, how to relax on the big day and be “present” for all those important moments, as well as to enjoy them before they disappear in a hazy blur. Indeed, de la Fuente Wedding photography believe it is crucial for you to stop and enjoy your wedding day, and they will help you in making this a reality. Having fun, creating memories with realism and showing your distinctive and unique style is paramount to this team who pride themselves on individualising each wedding to something extremely personal to the stars of the day: you, the bride and groom. As Adrian says “The experience has to match the celebration. We understand our place and the privilege and responsibility we have”. Many wedding photographers work alone, and sometimes come in pairs. De la Fuente Photography have a team of up to 4 photographers and videographers that are present, yet unobtrusive during your day, capturing natural images of not only you having fun, relaxing, enjoying your day

Breaking the mould in wedding photography was Adrian’s aim; however he superseded this long ago with his expert staff, amazing technique and state-of-the-art equipment. If you are lucky enough to have the 47

and creating those very important memories, but also those other very important people that matter so much in your lives – your friends and family. People are the focus of their work, and this clearly shines through in the many samples of de la Fuente Weddings’ wonderful portfolios. www.delafuenteweddings.co.nz Perhaps one of the largest jewels in de la Fuente’s crown is their famous slideshow. On the actual wedding day they are able to incorporate some of the best images taken of you earlier that very day, and run a slideshow to show your guests, right there, at your wedding reception! This feature is beyond exciting to many couples, who are aware that it sometimes takes weeks, or even months, before you get to see your much anticipated photos. The team at De la Fuente Weddings radiate the energy, vibrancy and enthusiasm any couple getting married seeks. They believe “a wedding is a festival” and what an apt description that is! As a couple approaching your big day, you want nothing more than someone to be as excited as you, about what is likely to be one of the biggest days of your life. Your amazing photographs will most certainly become treasured keepsakes, which will act as portals back to your special moment in time. In the famous words of Eudora Welty “A good snapshot stops a moment from running away”. Perhaps it is possible to make time stand still after all? It’s your day and most importantly, your story. A FESTIVAL OF COLOUR Tulsi and Chet – 14th May 2011 Article by Johanna Osborne TULSI AND CHET’S STORY IS A TRUE FUSION OF LIVES, COUNTRIES AND CULTURES. MEETING 12 YEARS AGO THROUGH MUTUAL FRIENDS ON NEW YEAR’S EVE, THIS COUPLE HAS CREATED A LIFETIME OF ADVENTURE TOGETHER. In August 2008 when they were living in London, Chet organised a surprise trip to celebrate their anniversary. Tulsi only learnt where she would be whisked away to once arriving at the airport. Their destination: Dubai. The following days were full of joy and wonder, and saw the pair taking in the magnificent sights of Jumeria Beach, and there, on the top floor of the Burj Al Arab, Chet asked Tulsi to be his wife. Travel has indeed been a shared love for this pair, who has experienced many countries, cultures and traditions in their time together. In keeping with this passion, Tulsi and Chet decided not only to have one wedding, but two. Tulsi explains “There are a lot of differences in Hindu and traditional Kiwi weddings, which is why most NZ born Indians like Chet and I choose to have two weddings, or at least two ceremonies - one Traditional Indian and another exchanging normal vows and rings.”

HOW WE DID IT CAPTURE:

The first wedding was a beautiful, intimate ceremony on a picturesque beach in Thailand, with only 50 guests. A serene entree to the rather large and vibrant extravaganza that would follow.

FineLine Photography

Tulsi and Chet’s second wedding took place back in their home town, Wellington. Having been away for almost 4 years, this event provided a perfect opportunity to reconnect and bond with family over the multitude of important preparations for the big day. Indian weddings involve many of the family members throughout the lead-up and on the wedding day itself, so there was no more appropriate place than Wellington to hold such an important and happy occasion.

CUISINE:

Hindu weddings are very bright events, filled with ritual and celebration, and continue for several days. Tulsi and Chet’s was no exception. With 400 guests attending their big wedding day, this was something no one was likely to forget in a hurry.

A traditional Indian wedding starts off with the bride and groom each getting ready at their respective houses. Both of their extended families gather at the houses and head down to the venue together. Tulsi and Chet’s venue was the Indian Cultural Centre in Kilbirnie. Chet was escorted to the stage where the ceremony takes place. Tulsi entered slightly later with her family behind her.

Once the elaborate ceremony was complete, Tulsi and Chet, their family and their many guests dissolved into ecstatic celebration, a true fusion of friends, foods, cultures and tradition. The catering is traditionally overseen by the bride’s side – the extended family do the cooking with the guidance of a few key ladies. Tulsi’s parents own an Indian restaurant, Planet Spice, and the restaurant also provided some of the dishes. Traditionally there is only a vegetarian meal at Hindu weddings. However the pair wanted their wedding to have something extra, and they also had chicken and lamb on the menu. In keeping with a more modern approach, they also served alcohol and had dancing after the ceremony. Tulsi says “This was a bit different from the usual, but a lot of our generation are starting to change the traditional Hindu wedding ceremony.” These added touches meant that whilst guests were able to enjoy a traditional wedding, they also experienced a taste of the couple’s fun-loving and modern approach to life.

Tulsi’s beautiful hair was styled by Buoy hairdressing, and she looked stunning in her traditional brightly coloured wedding outfit, purchased in Rangoli, a popular Indian store in London. The floral arrangements were created by Tulsi’s aunt, but she did not carry a bouquet for this wedding. The garlands that were exchanged during the ceremony were prepared by family members. The stage decorations were made by Bhakti Mistry from Hot Chilli Designs. The celebrations focused on the love between Tulsi and Chet, but also on their families coming together, with much emphasis being placed on the family aspect. Tulsi and Chet felt alive and fulfilled on their wedding day, and describe the stunning festivities as “colourful, traditional and joyful”.

For this beautiful pair who hold their families very dear, one thing is for certain; they will have a bright future in every sense of the word, with many more brilliant, vibrant celebrations to come. 52

LOVE STRUCK

Katherine and James – 26th March 2011 Article by Johanna Osborne

THEY MET ONE STARRY NIGHT IN WELLINGTON IN 2008. SHE LIKED HIS DOG, HE LIKED HER ‘CHUCKS’ – IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT. JAMES SAID TO HIS FRIEND THAT OWNED THE RESTAURANT AT THE TIME; “YOU DON’T MEET WOMEN LIKE THAT VERY OFTEN”. THE REST IS HISTORY AND THEIR FATE WAS SEALED. THEY WERE INSEPARABLE AND MOVED IN TOGETHER A MONTH LATER.

HOW WE DID IT

Kaitoke Reserve set the scene for the all important proposal. Having spent many wonderful moments walking their dogs and picnicking, it felt natural to James to ask Katherine to be his wife there. The self-confessed “die hard romantic” had prepared a backpack with champagne and a photoalbum, in which he had written a letter ending with “will you marry me?”

CAPTURE:

The couple’s favourite spot is Martinborough, so their choice of venue, the charming Coney Wines, was not surprising. With its marquee-style cover and pergola of grape vines, the cafe courtyard provided the ideal setting for their most special day. The “aisle” of vines created a wonderful atmosphere for the ceremony, with the vineyard and view out to the mountains adding a splendid backdrop. In the evening, the intimate celebrations with their 48 guests included a wedding dinner of superb cuisine matched with award-winning Coney wines, before the couple danced the night away with family and friends. James and Kat explain; “Coney was the perfect size for our relatively small invite list. It is also beautiful with roses all over the inside, and it caters wonderfully for all weather eventualities. Plus the food, wine and staff are fabulous in every way.”

Describing themselves as “very personal people” who aren’t completely comfortable being in the spotlight, their decision to have a smaller group of invitees within a private setting really helped make Katherine and James feel at ease. When reflecting on their day, the pair says it was “simple, intimate and unforgettable”. Just how they wanted it.

The wedding may have been small in size, but it was big on quality. Scent Floral Boutique on Johnston Street provided the all-important flowers on the day, and Katherine could not have been happier with the country-inspired natural blooms which captured just the right amount of colour. The bride’s beautiful ring was custom-made by Auckland basedjeweller Angela Kelly. The groom’s ring is a Cartier band. James’ suit was also made-to-order by Crane Brothers, and Katherine could not stop raving about how handsome he looked. Katherine’s stunning dress was purchased from Brides on Thorndon. The bridal party’s hair was styled by the bride’s sister Victoria, and her husband Costa, proud owners of Badaro Salon in Wellington. The cherry on top of all these wonderful special touches was the Mediterranean honeymoon – four weeks basking on the beaches and exploring the hustle and bustle of Spain, Italy and Greece.

The Wairarapa provided not only the all-important setting for the wedding, but in the week leading up to the nuptials, many friends and family members stayed there together anticipating the big day. The couple says; “This made all the difference, and really turned our wedding into not just one special day, but a proper family reunion as well. Our families are from overseas, and this week allowed them to relax, contribute and have fun.” In terms of planning Katherine and James knew they wanted a country chic theme, and their most valued resource - wedding planner Charlotte Wood - made it all happen for them. They share; “We realise that some may view having a planner as cheating, but it really made all the difference. It also allowed us to realise our vision of what we wanted our wedding to be like. Charlotte was excellent at listening to us, and the end result was perfect. From the beautiful table settings to the fantastic bunting, everything displayed symmetry of concept.”

In terms of advice to other couples getting married, Katherine and James suggest researching what you would like your wedding to look and feel like, and making sure you end up with a succinct theme that everyone will appreciate. A wedding planner certainly helps make it all happen! The romantic and traditional couple who are “best mates”, say their goal is simply to enjoy life together and ensure they always love and respect each other. They laugh ... “It may sound sappy, but a ‘happily ever after’ is what we know is in store for us!” 60

FROM DUNEDIN TO GREECE: A TALE OF 2 CULTURES Desinee and Apostolos – Friday 21 January 2011 Article by Johanna Osborne OPA! BREAK OUT THE OUZO AND FLY THE GREEK FLAG, DESINEE AND APOSTOLOS ARE MAN AND WIFE! For this self-proclaimed laid back couple, nothing seemed more natural than being together. Meeting whilst working together on a project, this pair felt a “will you marry me” moment just didn’t suit their style. Instead, they planned a big overseas trip and bought the ring together shortly before going away. Once they arrived in Greece, Desinee and Apostolos announced their plans to marry. This turned their overseas adventure into five weeks of non-stop celebration with overjoyed family and friends.

HOW WE DID IT

Travelling, seeing the world and staying in touch with loved ones is paramount for this down-to-earth couple. Their interest in new and different places is rather symbolic, as their union is also a merging of two cultures. Apostolos is a NZ born Greek and Desinee is a born-and-bred Southern girl.

CAPTURE: Amy Schulz Photography

STYLE:

Desinee and Apostolos opted for a traditional Greek wedding service. Greek Orthodox weddings are beautiful and symbolic ceremonies, filled with tradition. The service is rather formal in style, and proved to be very interesting to many of their friends and family who had never been to a Greek wedding before. At one point of the service, the priest takes crowns from the altar table, blesses the bride and groom, and then places the crowns upon their heads. The priest then leads the newly joined husband and wife around the table – a type of religious dance, celebrating the union. The “Crowning” is a particular highlight of Greek wedding ceremonies.

Due to the formality of the ceremony, the couple opted to give the reception a modern and relaxed feel. They intentionally kept their guest list to 115, which is small for a Greek wedding, in order to give it a more intimate and relaxed feel. It also meant they could speak to each of their

guests during the reception, something which was very important to them. Desinee and Apostolos were attracted to their venue SOI Café/Bar at Greta Point Marina for several reasons; they were impressed by the great location directly above the water, the magnificent views, the fantastic food and simple yet modern décor.

In terms of planning Desinee was very organised and knew what she wanted well in advance. Her advice “Start planning early! Don’t compromise on the things you really want and don’t be afraid to ask for help.” Family members from both sides provided an invaluable amount of help and assistance with a multitude of tasks. Desinee also credits her good friend Kylie Gibbons from Getfunkd on The Terrace for creating her look on the day. “I’ve gone to Kylie for years and she kindly did all of the bridal party’s hair as our wedding gift - she also came to the wedding and reception”.

After the church service, the evening’s festivities progressed in splendid fashion and a sense of fun was certainly in the air. What sets a Greek wedding apart from others? Desinee laughs, “The dancing and celebration – I think everyone just gets into it a bit more!” And that’s not an exaggeration. A highlight of the night was the plate smashing, and it just wouldn’t be a Greek wedding without it! “There was quite a bit of mess, but it was heaps of fun”. A talking point amongst many guests, this ritual won’t soon be forgotten. In ancient tradition, smashing plates is believed to symbolise new beginnings.

The flowers and event-styling were another stand-out with many compliments paid along the day; “We definitely couldn’t have done without Katie and Paula Bevege’s help - they took the stress out of the flowers and decorations for the reception. It was great having someone with their skills and talent”.

Traditionally each of the guests also received sugared almonds, symbolic of the future of the couple. The shape resembles eggs which represent fertility, and the white colour symbolises purity. The hard almond in the middle represents the durability of marriage, whereas the sweet coating represents the sweetness of married life.

The beautiful photographs were taken by Amy Schulz. The couple were very impressed by her patience and ability to maintain a good sense of humour throughout, despite “a fair bit of teasing from the groomsmen!” Overall Desinee and Apostolos couldn’t have been happier with how their day turned out. It was “fun, relaxed and intimate, exactly how we wanted it to be”.

The couple did a wonderful job blending important Greek traditions with the more low-key customs Desinee’s family were used to. Everyone felt comfortable, relaxed, happy and entertained throughout this unique wedding.

So what lies ahead? “Enjoy every day we have together, and in the not too distance future look to start a family.” Wait until the family hears! 64
