he now annual ABP Club event was held in Dublin and Belfast recently and David Cresswell, Chairman of the ABP Club had some remarkable statistics for the bodyshop and refinish experts that gathered at the events. While the bodyshop industry is worth around £3.5billion per year in the UK, profits are very tight and the industry fragmented. The average repair job is now £1,332 taking an average of 15.7 hours with the price breakdown of 36% labour charges, 21% on paint and 43% on parts. The average hourly rate for bodyshops in the UK is £30.65/hour, yet the average pre tax profit for the top ten independent garages in the UK is just 1.38%, just £18 profit on the average job. This is a slight improvement on last year’s figure of 0.98% profit. Also at the show, the British Standards Institute announced that a new standard for the repair and refinish sector, BS10125 would come into effect at the end of 2014. The good news for bodyshops is that any centres that have already been accredited with PAS 125 should find the move to the better know British Standard quite straightforward...

The expansion forms part of a £2.5million investment by the company, aimed at growing sales to Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland. Arlene Foster said: “This state-ofthe-art production facility marks an important milestone for Taxi & Bus Conversion Limited and signals its commitment to long-term growth. “From humble beginnings eight years ago, this specialist business has steadily grown its sales to Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland, building up valuable relationships with leading vehicle manufacturers.” Invest Northern Ireland has offered the Co. The Minister continued: “Invest NI’s continued support has played a significant role in the company’s growth to date and enabled the business to increase employment and invest in marketing, R&D and skills

development. “The impressive new production facility will underpin the company’s ambitious growth plans, while the 19 new jobs will make a valuable contribution to the local community and wider economy.” Taxi & Bus Conversion Limited was established in 2006, and specialises in the adaption and conversion of mobility vehicles, taxis and minibuses and specialist vehicles throughout GB and ROI. Favourite garages revealed

M

otor Codes, the Trading Standards-approved garage scheme, has revealed the UK’s 20 most trusted garages, as nominated by customers of its 8,000-strong garage network. The garages which made the shortlist – people’s favourite 10 main dealers and 10 independent garages – topped their regions following a month-long competition that generated more than 13,000 online reviews from garage customers. Motor Codes’ online garage finder holds over 230,000 online reviews and it is this customer feedback that helps direct people to approved garages rather than unscrupulous traders. The winners in Northern Ireland were Newtownabbey Auto Centre in the Independent category and SERE Seat Lisburn in the franchised sector. Chris Mason, managing director of Motor Codes, sees Garage of the Year as a way of promoting those garages that consistently provide excellent customer service: “Everybody shops online these days and it’s no different when it comes to looking for a trustworthy garage. By putting themselves in the spotlight and being open to review, Motor Codes garages are helping to boost confidence. People can now make an informed decision about who to trust when it comes to spending on car servicing.” ■

year, provides a snapshot of the Northern Ireland economy from the latest available company accounts – most relating to the 2012/2013 financial year - filed at Companies House. At 2.9%, the collective rise in sales eased slightly from last year, when the top 100 companies delivered a 10.4% increase in turnover. Poultry processor Moy Park topped the survey for the third year running

after registering sales figures of £1.09bn, up 10% on the previous year, and profits of £24.4m. Other companies which grew significantly include Short Brothers PLC (16.9%), Fane Valley Co-Operative Society Ltd (17.3%) and W&R Barnett Ltd (19.6%). And the last year has proved much more profitable. Combined, the Top 100 companies made £1,017m, a significant jump on the £636.2m posted last year and the first time the £1bn profit barrier has been broken. David Elliott, editor of Ulster Business said: “This year’s Top 100 list shows Northern Ireland’s biggest companies have emerged from the downturn with renewed vigour. The increase in overall turnover in the last 12 months is heartening, but it’s the jump in profit which really stands out, proving the last few years of consolidation have left the Northern Ireland economy as a lean and efficient machine.” The Charles Hurst Group has moved up two places to thirteenth, while Donnelly Group has moved up seventeen places. The Agnew Group, now owned by Frank Sytner Group, has separate listings for different franchises, with Bavarian BMW now ranking 87th. ■

IN BRIEF

Tax Disc ending –Implications for your business

A

s you know the tax disc disappears as from 1st October. After that date no new tax discs will be issued by the DVLA. The SMTA NI Division has warned that dealers and repairing work- shops should, after that date, be wary of servicing vehicles where no tax disc is displayed. Many workshops will probably road test cars before returning them to their owners; many will also run a collection and delivery service. The motor trade needs to be aware that if carrying out either of these tasks and the car is NOT taxed, then it is currently the case that it will be the driver that will be charged, NOT the registered keeper of the vehicle. It will be the delivery or test driver who is committing the offence of driving the car without road tax. Where the use in question is by an employee during the course of their employment, then the employer is also guilty of the offence under current legislation. The answer to this presumably is always to use trade plates when road testing a car but we all know that does not always happen! So before accepting the car, or collecting it for service, it would be worth your while checking via the DVLA website to ensure that the car is taxed. The DVLA is still testing its online checking system but we are assured that it will cope with a high level of enquiries come October. It has been suggested by some that if you get the car owner to sign a certificate that the vehicle is taxed, this should be sufficient to ensure that you driver is not fined; this is being suggested on the basis that because you have taken steps to ensure that it is taxed then you would not be guilty of any offence. However, at the SMTA (NI Division) we do not accept that this would mean no fine – the offence has still been committed. We would recommend that you ensure that any vehicle in your charge which is liable to be driven without trade plates by you or a member of your staff complies with the law in terms of road tax and MOT. All the more important as PSNI cars have access to the records and seem to be checking more frequently for Road Tax, MOT & Insurance. ■

Martin Hutchinson (middle) with Roy Kemp & Colin Rainey Directors of ROCO Auto Solutions Ltd, who’ve recently joined the newly formed Northern Ireland Division of the long established SMTA (Scottish Motor Trade Assoc). “As well as the many member benefits I’m sure belonging to the SMTA NI will help reassure our customers that we’re committed to great customer service” said Roy. “We’ve known Martin for many years and know he will give us support to help our business develop” quoted Colin. ROCO join SMTA Northern Ireland Trade Association.

Scottish Motor Trade Association now in N.Ireland The Scottish Motor Trade Association (SMTA) has expanded into Northern Ireland under the trading title of The SMTA, Northern Ireland Division.

M

artin Hutchinson, formerly IMI National Manager in NI, through his consultancy firm Motor Industry Services, will promote the SMTA to the retail motor trade in the region. He will also promote Scotsure warranty products to car sales operations and the range of services that the SMTA can offer to members in Northern Ireland. Equally important, is to hear from NI motor businesses to find out what services may be offered in the future as the ‘not for profit’ Motor Trade Association develops in NI.

SMTA “The majority of the services we offer in Scotland will also be available in NI,” said Martin Hutchinson. “These include SMMT Vehicle Sales Data, representation to government bodies; representation on trade

groups; motor trade insurance, employment law advice; credit & debit card services; a technical support service, training, access and influence on courses and qualifications, health & safety expert /advice, sale of goods act and Legal advice. The SMTA, through bulk purchasing, offers great deals on goods and services such as tyres, oils and waste disposal and much more. The Chief Executive of the SMTA, Douglas Robertson paid tribute to Martin Hutchinson’s expertise in the trade. “The SMTA has had a few members in Northern Ireland for several years now and the intention has always been to expand into the region,” said Douglas. “In order to do this successfully, three things needed to fall into place. Firstly we needed the right person to lead

us in NI; secondly, we needed to ensure that the range of services and benefits we offered was suitable and, thirdly, the timing had to be right. “We believe that in Martin Hutchinson we have the right man; we also believe that the range of services we can currently offer is appropriate and we also believe that the timing is now right. Without looking too far into the future we believe it possible that a Northern Ireland Motor Trade Association could be the end result of our expansion into the region; a trade association with its own Board formed entirely of NI members and run for the benefit of the retail motor trade in Northern Ireland.” Martin Hutchinson can be contacted on 028 90 860053 or martin@motorindustryservices.org ■

elphi Product & Service Solutions has introduced 21 oil pressure switches to its sensor product portfolio. The latest additions cover various applications such as, BMW, Citroën, Vauxhall, Fiat, Ford, Peugeot, Saab and Volkswagen. Oil Pressure Switches monitor the oil pressure of the engine. These switches open or close an electrical contact when a certain set pressure has been reached. When the switch is on its minimum pressure, a light on the dashboard will appear. Poor oil pump performance and a worn engine will cause the oil pressure switch to operate and illuminate the dashboard light, so indicating engine condition. A faulty Oil Pressure Switch can hide the condition of the engine until the damage has occurred. ■

The latest step in the WebCat’s evolutionary development is the introduction of 360º product imagery, to make parts identification even easier. The camera required to produce these images is quite complex and costly and the photographer needs to be well trained in order for the results to be of the correct quality, but it is a step that FLG believes is necessary to support its customers through the parts identification process. Commenting on this latest development FLG Managing Director, Dan Joyner said: “At first thought, spending £10,000 on a camera might seem excessive, but the point is it’s an investment. We take our websites very seriously as they are a very effective communication and support tool for our customers and if we can improve their effectiveness, we will. “As everyone knows, a picture paints a thousand words, but even in picture form some products are still tricky to identify. However, this is not the case with an image taken with one of these cameras and hosted through the website, as the user can rotate the images through 360º and view the part from every possible angle and therefore clearly see whether it’s the part they are looking for. “Water pumps was the first product category we chose to initiate the new 360º image technology, but a roll out programme for more of the product groups is well underway, which is why we encourage our customers and the many installers that use our sites, to keep checking the WebCat for the new additions as they come online.” For more information about the quality products available from the First Line Group, please call the sales team on: 01869 248484 or visit: www.firstlineltd.com ■

ECP lights up Thatcham Repair Focus Event

T

he ABP Club meeting at the Thatcham Repair Focus event was chosen as the venue to unveil ECP’s new Platinum Plus automotive lighting range, which is independently certified by Thatcham/TŰV. All 40 products are now fully in stock in their contemporary styled boxes, providing headlamps, fog lamps and rear lamps that can deliver cost savings. The accreditation through Thatcham means bodyshops can be reassured that the fit, function, adjustability and beam pattern are of the utmost comfort and quality. No additional time is required to insert the units, as the products have been tested to be fitted in the same amount of time as their OE equivalents. Presenting at the event, Richard Taylor, head of collision repair relations at ECP, said, “Our objective for the Platinum Plus lighting brand was to ensure it went through the process of being test fitted and aligned with the Thatcham Accreditation Programme before launching the range to repairers. They can see for themselves the wider choice of quality products that are available as a viable OE option leading to potential savings. By partnering with Thatcham, we are ensuring that the key element of PAS125 has been met, where it clearly states that the part has to perform equivalent to the original part.” Steve Horne, director, commented, “Our aim is to change perceptions in the marketplace that approved aftermarket parts are a genuine quality alternative to OE and to raise awareness of our Thatcham certified Platinum Plus lighting range in responding to customers’ demands for solutions that help them increase their profitability.” ■

Borg & Beck braking range additions Quality & Range From Borg & Beck

U

nder its renowned Borg & Beck brand, the First Line Group (FLG) has already introduced 251 new-to-range (NTR) additions to its braking programme so far this year. These additions mean that the range consists of more than 4,000 ‘live’ part numbers, which makes it one of the most comprehensive in the aftermarket. Among the 2014 NTR introductions are part numbers for several popular applications, which FLG believes are not readily available from other braking suppliers. These include front brake pads for the Vauxhall Adam 10/12 > (BBP2388), Renault Clio IV 11/12 > (BBP2407) and Ford Transit Custom 2.2TD 12/12 > (BBP2414); rear brake pads for the VW Golf VII 11/12 > (BBP2402); front brake discs for the Vauxhall Mokka 06/12 > (BBD5314) and Ford B-Max 10/12 > (BBD5316); rear brake discs for the Fiat 500L 09/12 > (BBD5312) and Hyundai i30 11/11 > (BBD5327). The overall dry braking programme comprises 1,325 brake pads, 307

brake shoes, 1,422 brake discs, 175 brake drums, 115 wear leads, 449 brake pad fitting kits, 193 brake shoe fitting kits and 98 premounted brake shoe fitting kits. In addition to its dry and wet braking programmes, FLG has the necessary expertise to maintain their position as market leaders for their quality range of cables, which naturally encompasses brake cables. This in-house expertise has allowed the company to solve one of the aftermarket’s most complicated riddles: that of the brake cables for Ford’s Mk.V and VI Transits. FLG has issued a product bulletin that clarifies the correct front, intermediate and rear cables fitted to all variations of these popular vans. The document details how the cables can vary depending on the vehicle’s wheelbase, the month it was manufactured, if it has single or twin rear wheels or if it is fitted with rear discs or drum brakes. There are a total of 38 different part numbers used on Mk.V & VI Transit models, so

the correct identification of these parts is critical for product selection. The primary aim of FLG is to offer customers the most pertinent Braking portfolio available in the aftermarket, with a particular focus on being first to market with coverage of the latest applications. The strength of the Borg & Beck brand coupled with the high specification and quality

of the product, gives customers the confidence they are using premium components. The range is supported by a ‘best-in-industry’ catalogue, which is available in print and online. Borg & Beck guides the way New Clutch Guide Tube Now In Stock

T

he First Line Group (FLG) has introduced under its renowned Borg & Beck brand, a clutch guide tube – part number HKD0006 - that is compatible with 35 of its clutch kits for many popular PSA (Peugeot/Citroën) and FIAT group applications. Although not officially deemed to be part of the clutch kit, FLG ‘best practice’ recommends that just as with concentric slave cylinder (CSC) replacement, the clutch guide tube is also replaced when the vehicle requires a 16 - garageTRADER

replacement clutch. Replacing this guide tube at the same time as the clutch can not only save time and money in the long term, but can actually help to extend the life of the clutch, as the original guide tube will often be worn or damaged. Left unchanged, this can cause the release bearing to operate incorrectly or become misaligned, which can cause clutch operating problems, such as slipping, stiff operation or clutch control issues. It is also important that all the lubrication points in the clutch release system are correctly greased and checked for their correct operation, as both the lack of lubrication or excess grease build up can cause release problems. To ensure the amount and specification of the lubrication is correct, each Borg & Beck clutch kit comes complete with a sachet of grease, specifically designed for clutch spline and release systems. Through its Borg & Beck brand, FLG is the market leader when it comes to replacement CSC clutch kits with more than 400 part numbers in its comprehensive range. Allied to the fact that CSC clutches already represent almost 25% of the repair market, a figure that is set

to continue to rise over the next few years, the brand is ideally placed to help factors and workshops satisfy this growing demand. In addition to the depth of its range, the brand has a well-earned reputation for quality, which means that each kit comes with a two-year warranty. However, in the unlikely event of a claim, FLG also has a market leading web portal to quickly and efficiently process and report on the claim. Developed alongside its clutch testing/ development centre, the warranty portal will answer the claim within five days for a straightforward case, but even those that require a more detailed test report and the return of the components will be answered within 10 working days. Sometimes warranty claims highlight areas where the installation process needs greater explanation and for this reason, as well as its passion to encourage its customers to follow industry best practice, FLG offers technical training, which it has developed through its test centre and is presented through its onsite technical training centre. ■ check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk

New range of EGTS from NGK A

new range of NTK exhaust gas temperature sensors (EGTS) has been launched by NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd. EGTS monitor the exhaust temperatures to enable efficient protection of vital components located in the flow of hot exhaust gases in single and twin turbo-charged cars. EGTS from the NTK brand are original equipment (OE) in every third car worldwide. Announcing the news at the Automechanika Show in Frankfurt, Germany, the company said NTK EGTS are a popular choice for vehicle manufacturers as they provide extreme resilience against heat and vibrations, have high measuring accuracy, fast lightoff times and an exceptionally wide measuring range. Ten years after NGK’s first European OE business with these sensors, it now supplies 35 percent of all EGTS for OE globally with this market share rising to more than 60% for the mounting position upstream of the turbo charger. The new EGTS assortment for the aftermarket offers great business opportunities for distributors and workshops. Initially it includes the 20 most popular EGTS types from NTK, each of which is identical to the respective OES part. Taken together, they offer a perfect sensor for almost two million cars in the UK for brands that include Audi, BMW, Dacia, Ford, Renault, Seat, Skoda and VW. To ease stock keeping, NGK has developed a special label for the EGTS aftermarket packaging which can be scanned in upright and horizontal position and details the mounting position of the included sensor to prevent incorrect installation. The NTK Lambda sensor range includes a sensor for a wide range of petrol cars. In addition, NGK is also the sole supplier of numerous Lambda sensors for diesel vehicles. ■

Mintex Braking Range now at Giv-Ran Giv-Ran Autoparts in Newry have recently been appointed as recognised Mintex brake product stockists.

he Mintex brand has consistently developed a commitment to ongoing product development – a philosophy that exists to this day and helps Mintex stay ahead of the competition. Since 1908, Mintex have been developing products to reflect the ever changing technology in vehicles but the same core principles remain – safety first and foremost. Mintex’ first Le Mans win was back in 1923 and in 1951 they achieved their 10th victory with a Jaguar fitted with Mintex Brake Liners, this was repeated in 1953 and 1957. Their OE credentials are just as impressive when in 1968, the iconic Ford Escort was fitted with Mintex and British Leyland chose Mintex

Liners for the Austin Maxi production line vehicles too. To this day Mintex continue to supply the world’s leading vehicle manufacturers around the globe with products from the Mintex family. Giv-Ran Autoparts started business in Newry in December of 2006, on the Downshire Road Newry. After 5 years of success it was time for the business to expand further, so in February 2012 they moved into a new 6000 sq ft warehouse at H & P Business Park. Owner and managing director Martin McGivern has over 25 years experience in the motor trade having previously worked with his father Eamon McGivern at Givran Ltd in Newry.

chaeffler Automotive Aftermarket is leading a crackdown on counterfeiters by introducing new security labels to a wide range of its products. Thanks to several safety features on the label, including a datamatrix code and holographic technology, distributors and garages will be able to check whether they hold an original package from the aftermarket expert or a counterfeit. This new security solution is already being used for selected product groups and repair solutions, but all

Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket product packages sold in the UK will eventually get this technology in a step-by-step process. The initiative by the original equipment (OE) manufacturer of LuK clutches, INA tensioners and FAG wheel bearings follows a growing number of reports of problems caused by customers buying products that have been sourced through online shopping sites. More and more mechanics say that a growing number of customers want them to fit parts that they have sourced themselves via the internet, a worrying trend, as not only is there the issue of the car driver potentially purchasing the wrong replacement part or application for their vehicle, but how can either party be certain that the parts are ‘genuine’, as is often advertised? The technical team at Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket (UK) Ltd has received a high number of complaints from end users who purchased clutches online thinking they were getting a bargain. The seller was misleading its customers by advertising the product as genuine, original LuK and retail boxed. Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket (UK) Ltd Technical Services Manager Malcolm Short said: “One particular seller was and still is advertising clutches as genuine, brand new and retail boxed. What actually turns up is a white boxed, badly remanufactured unit “In fact, LuK does not supply remanufactured clutches in the UK, or sell products in plain white or brown boxes, but in full liveried cartons with clear labelling. It is easy,

however, for some online sellers to exploit the unsuspecting buyer. We have confronted this company several times now but they continue to ignore us, so we now intend to pursue them legally.” The company says there are many ways a garage can identify the difference between a new or remanufactured clutch, or to check out a dodgy seller:

Have a look in the box! Generally the parts have been shot blasted and painted and come packed in a non-branded box.

Read the feedback!

Online suppliers are often distance sellers, so there is always the potential for dodgy traders. To counter this, most sites have a feedback system.

Google the company!

The problems with the company selling fake LuK clutches online were so prolific that a Google search reveals a mass of customer complaints.

Be careful!

Garages can be considered legally liable - even if they did not offer a warranty. They should be careful about fitting parts supplied from anywhere but their usual trusted supplier.

Think Factor!

Most garages have a motor factor that they know and trust that provides them with correct products from the suppliers they want to use. Any unexpected problems with incorrect parts or brands are solved with a quick phone call, and shortly after the van turns up again with the right parts. Surely this is a quicker and safer solution than any online retailer could manage? ■

AFTERMARKET GT BLUEPRINT, COMLINE

Power Steering Fluid Comline Goes Resevoir from Blue Print Intercontinental T

he power steering fluid reservoir fitted to the Chrysler Voyager and Grand Voyager 3.3i is equipped with a small filter within its base. When this filter becomes contaminated and partially blocked, the power steering fluid flow becomes restricted between the reservoir and the pump. This usually results in an abnormal whine from the power steering pump, which is worse from a cold start up and at slow manoeuvring speeds. Provided the pump hasn’t been subjected to prolonged fluid starvation, a replacement reservoir (which has a new filter) and fresh fluid is normally all that’s needed to provide a lasting repair. The Blue Print power steering reservoir ‘ADA109551’ is a direct replacement for the original item and a straightforward job to complete. It is strongly advised that you drain as much of the original fluid from the power steering system as possible (including oil cooler, if fitted) and replace with new fluid of the correct specification. Chrysler recommends power steering fluid that meets MOPAR MS-5931 specification. ■

omline has now expanded its activities beyond the European market into a number of exciting new territories. Comline continues to flourish, both in its home market here, and in a rapidly expanding group of international markets. The Comline brand promise of high quality products and competitive pricing is finding favour with aftermarket businesses across the globe. Sales & Marketing Director Malcolm Rosher commented: “Comline is extremely proud of its international credentials. As a British brand, the success we have had in our home market has been fantastic and it’s great to see this being mirrored in countries right across Europe, and beyond. Our rate of expansion in recent years has been nothing short of phenomenal and seeing Comline now distributing into new continents is an absolute thrill.” Continued expansion into new international markets further underlines that Comline is a brand that is really going places. ■

DPF CLINIC

DPF CLINIC

A clinical solution to the DPF dilemma www.thedpfclinic.com

W

ith Ireland’s roads dominated by diesel cars, problems with the diesel particulate filter are a now a major headache for garages and motorists across the country. Short journey cycles mean on many vehicles the DPF never gets the chance to properly regenerate so a build up of soot will eventually clog the filter. This clogging will always mean reduced engine performance, higher fuel consumption and an increase in harmful emission. It can also mean a vehicle going into limp mode or worse still stopping altogether. A new replacement DPF can work out very expensive and is often beyond the budget of a hard pressed motorist, while DPF cleaning liquids might only provide some short term relief. The DPF Clinic now offers a third option and it is one that garages all over Ireland are increasingly turning to. Ben O’Brien of the DPF Clinic says, “The service we offer is a permanent and cost effective solution. It is a complete DPF clean using very advanced equipment that

24 - garageTRADER

totally eliminates all the soot particles and leaves a 0.00% ash content. The refurbished DPF is effectively as new and will perform as it originally did throughout the lifetime of the vehicle.” Ben explains that the automated cleaning process on offer is totally different to the on-vehicle procedures that can be carried out with DPF cleaning liquids. He comments, “Many garages have tried these liquid cleaners and in many cases are disappointed with the results. Technicians need to understand that our cleaning process is totally different. It is a clean that fully refurbishes the DPF so that it matches the as new condition and provides a permanent fix.” The DPF Clinic cleaning process costs in the region of €250, so with brand new units sometimes in the thousands the savings to the motorist are very considerable. The DPF Clinic can also provide a fast turnaround and get cars back on the road quickly. DPF problems can affect all

types of diesel vehicles, but Ben gives two examples of how his company’s service can really make a difference. He says, “We have found that BMW 520’s are very prone to DPF clogging. The build-up can be so great that in many cases the blockage means the car can actually shut down without warning. It is such a frequent problem that we always keep clean 520 DPF’s in stock for same day or next day delivery.” Ben goes on to explain that often dealers can take up to a week to get a new DPF replacement for a 520 which will cost around €1300. Having the same unit cleaned by the DPF Clinic costs just €250, meaning a huge saving for the customer in both time and money. The second example that Ben gives is for the DPF on the 1.6 HDi engine as used in Ford Focus, and certain Peugeot models. This DPF is also prone to clogging and when this happens the car will generally go into limp mode. Ben says motorists, garages and in some

cases even dealers are unsure of the best solution. “Driving on in limp mode can lead to other problems so the issue with the DPF has to be addressed. We get big demand for cleaning on these filters, so again we tend to have them fully clean and ready to go off the shelf.” Many other totally clean fully refurbished DPF’s are kept in stock for vehicles known to be prone to DPF issues. However, clogging problems can of course occur on any type of vehicle and Ben and his team appreciate the importance of a fast turnaround on the cleaning service. He comments, “We have a very effective nationwide collection and delivery service which often means we can have a DPF collected cleaned and returned with 24 hours. The customer therefore gets a long term fix with a no quibble guarantee for a fraction of the cost of a new replacement and also the car is off the road for a minimal time.” For more information call the DPF Clinic on 061-518-325 or visit www.thedpfclinic.com ■

battery replacements can be carried out in a user-friendly manner. Changing a Start-Stop battery represents a major challenge for workshops. The battery is closely integrated with the on-board electrical system in order to support battery-powered CO2 and comfort functions. Carrying out the diagnosis, memory reset and re-registration of the battery in the vehicle electrical system is equally complicated. Other challenges include the various

installation positions in the vehicle and choosing exactly the right replacement battery. “With the next generation of the VARTA Start-Stop Service Program, we are providing the market with a comprehensive solution for battery servicing,” says Ruben Gomez Fernandez, Marketing Director of Johnson Controls Power Solutions EMEA. “VSSP 2.1 guides users quickly and in a focused manner through the process of replacing batteries in all vehicles, ensuring that batteries can be replaced unproblematically even in Start-Stop vehicles or vehicles with an integrated battery management system. Thanks to the new offline function, the device can be used anywhere. We gave the greatest priority to providing maximum flexibility and complete safety in order to ensure that every workshop is able to carry out complex battery replacements.”

Battery servicing made easy Vehicles can be identified very quickly either automatically via an OBD cable or manually via the vehicle identification number or a scroll-down menu. Following vehicle identification, the battery can be tested without direct access and the Start-Stop system or battery

management system can be precisely diagnosed. Thanks to the new updated product assignment function, the device can recommend precisely the right replacement battery for every vehicle. Finally, VSSP 2.1 displays in detail all the steps involved in removing and installing the battery, and registers the new battery in the system if required. Battery servicing concludes with a printable report of the test results.

Additional services The VSSP 2.1 partner zone at www. varta-automotive.com provides information about current vehicle and battery data as well as market developments. For consumers, Johnson Controls offers a two-year mobility guarantee including a 24-hour hotline and a tow service to the nearest garage.

Superior battery servicing Changing batteries has never been easier: VSSP 2.1 makes it possible to replace batteries in a quick and straighttforward manner in conventional and Start-Stop vehicles. VSSP 2.1 guides users through the battery replacement process in a user-friendly manner and offers an offline operating mode for flexible usage in workshops.

Improved usability The device features illustrated replacement instructions and shows the exact position of the installed battery. ■

Large performance gains in Exide’s new start-stop batteries L

arge performance gains will be seen in the new range of Start-Stop batteries from Exide Technologies. The new AGM battery will achieve four times longer cycle life, 20% more power and over three times the charge acceptance of a standard conventional battery. Similarly impressive gains will also be seen in Exide’s new EFB battery. Start-Stop vehicles already constitute 15% of the car parc, and this will reach 50% within the next five years. Only specially designed batteries can be used in Start-Stop vehicles, which is causing a huge shift in the battery market. Exide invented the first Start-Stop AGM battery back in 2004 and the first EFB battery in 2008. The company’s technology has improved at a rapid pace, and the new range will support sailing, energy recuperation and all the latest fuelsaving features. Cars with conventional powertrains can be fitted with AGM and EFB batteries to improve performance and reduce long-term costs. This is useful for special vehicles like ambulances and police cars, cars with power-hungry electrical equipment and scenarios where the battery is exposed to extreme driving conditions. ■ 26 - garageTRADER

BATTERIES GT BOSCH, EXIDE

Bosch restructures battery range Solving the puzzle often associated with battery selection, Bosch has restructured its awardwinning battery range. With a battery for everything from ATVs to agricultural vehicles, the refreshed range has been updated to make selecting the right battery quicker and easier than before.

I

n a move that aligns the entire range of Bosch batteries, it has redesigned its colour coding system to move the EFB and AGM batteries into its three main ranges, making battery identification straightforward and efficient. A range of pictograms – signifying key specifications and uses – helps garages and customers make certain that they are fitting the right battery every time, resulting in optimum vehicle performance. The comprehensive range of batteries covers a wide variety of car,

truck, motorcycle and leisure applications, and is constantly evolving to accommodate developing vehicle technologies, such as Start/Stop systems. Depending on the nature of the vehicle and the features it has, a different Bosch technology has been applied to ensure that performance is never compromised, while remaining cost effective. For car applications there are three levels of battery performance that suit the needs of different vehicles.

S3: Grey labels S3 is the entry level range; these products are suitable for older vehicles with smaller engines. S3 products should only be used in vehicles with limited electrical demands, such as from ABS, heated rear screen, alarm and electric windows or mirrors. The S3 range has Standard Flooded Lead Acid technology and is not suitable for vehicles with Start/Stop systems. This makes them cost effective for older vehicles (pre-2000).

S4: Blue labels The next step up from S3 is the S4 range, with some part numbers having Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB) technology. Any vehicle from 2000 onwards requires at least an S4 battery, as the range has the capability to deal with the greater level of specifications now expected on smaller cars. This includes air conditioning, heated seats, immobilisers and cruise control. EFB technology is becoming increasingly utilised by OEM’s, thanks in part to the rise in popularity of superminis.

S5: Black labels S5 batteries are the top-of-the-range products for use in cars. Some part numbers in the range feature Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) technology and products are capable of dealing with additional electrical demands. Premium vehicles and those with large diesel engines require an S5 battery, which can deal with electrical demands such as those from parking sensors, climate control, ESP and satellite navigation. ■

Exide Launches One-Size-Fits-All Battery Charger E

xide has launched the 12/7 Battery Charger, specially designed to always achieve 100% charge, even in extreme weather. The 12/7 works for all types and sizes of 12v batteries, including those for cars, motorcycles, boats and caravans. It will be sold to both consumers and professionals. The Exide 12/7 is the first consumer charger on the market with a temperature sensor fitted directly into the negative clamp. Chargers typically only take the temperature of the room, which often gives inaccurate results – particularly in hot and cold climates. The temperature is monitored throughout the charge and voltage is constantly adjusted. Temperatures from −40 to +50 degrees Celsius are supported. Most battery chargers follow the same charge

check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk

curve for AGM, flooded and GEL batteries. The Exide 12/7 uses optimised charge curves that respond to the type of battery being charged, which leads to perfect results across the board. Cut-off is calculated using both time and current – another important factor in achieving 100% charge. The Exide 12/7 has a 13.7v power supply capable of powering some diagnostic procedures and initiating charge to discharged batteries. It also has a boost of 15.5v in every charge if cold, making it ideal for cold charging. The current industry standard is 14.7v or 15.1v. The 12/7 is fitted with robust overcharge protection. Anti-spark technology is also in place, protecting against faulty batteries and connections.

ABP CLUB

SHOW TITANIC

New British Standard for the Bodyshop Industry due in 2015 With backing from PPG, the ABP (Automotive Body Professional) Club organised two bodyshop shows in Belfast and Dublin. Keynote speakers included representatives from Thatcham, British Standards Institute and Riverpark Training.

S

peaking at the event, David Cresswell Chairman of the ABP Club stated that while the bodyshop industry was worth around £3.5billion per year in the UK, profits were very tight and the industry fragmented. The average repair job is now £1,332 taking an average of 15.7 hours with the price breakdown of 36% labour charges, 21% on paint and 43% on parts. The average hourly rate for bodyshops in the UK is £30.65/ hour, yet the average pre tax profit for the top ten independent garages in the UK is just 1.38%, just £18 profit on the average job. This is a slight improvement on last year’s figure of 0.98% profit. David listed a number of forces affecting bodyshop profitability including: • The need to have an average of four paint systems per bodyshop • A shortage of skilled staff • Guaranteed average repair costs • Repair of write-offs • The scrapping of the VIC test in 2015 • Keeping up with technology Mr Cresswell also commented about the massive increase in technology and specialist materials including carbon fibre as well as the use of aluminium in cars such as the new Mercedes C Class and Jaguar XE as well the high technology hybrid vehicles now on the market such as the new BMW i3. Meanwhile, Audi has also announced that in the future some of its large cars will run on 48 volts. David Cresswell also informed guests that from October 2016, all new cars in Europe must be fitted with E-Call, a system in which the vehicle automatically alerts the authorities that it has been in a big accident in which the airbags have been deployed. Colin Hagan, managing director of Riverpark Training in Mallusk, the only ATA accreditated training centre in the whole of Ireland spoke of the skills shortage in the industry, a factor that was a combination of the recession and large employers like Bombardier

PPG & AUTOCLEAR

PPG signs new five year supply contract with Honda UK A

utomotive coatings manufacturer, PPG Industries with both its PPG and NEXA AUTOCOLOR® brands as one of two preferred paint partners, has strengthened its partnership with Honda by signing a new five-year contract to supply specialist refinish products and support services to Honda’s extensive European network of dealerships and collision repair centres. The agreement builds on PPG’s strong relationship with a number of individual local territories within the extensive Honda Motor Europe (HME) Network, including the UK, Poland and Spain. HME has now extended this relationship

by officially recommending PPG as an approved aftermarket paint supplier to Honda dealers within 19 strategic European countries. The contract is based on the supply of products from PPG’s market leading PPG, Nexa Autocolor premium paint brands, as well as colour tools, technical support and the delivery of bespoke training programmes to optimise performance and boost bodyshop productivity through the use of these products. Harvey Hughes, Manager - Dealer Business Development at Honda Motor Europe (HME), comments: “We believe we have made the best choice for our

Honda dealers in Europe. Important to us was the ability of PPG not only to supply an outstanding product range but also to guarantee best in class service to our network, which enables excellent quality in refinish.” Paul Tranter, PPG UK Business Development Manager, adds: “We are proud to have been awarded this new five-year contract by Honda. As we are already the market leader in different countries within Honda’s European network this contract is a great opportunity to leverage our tailor made services and products to

dealers throughout this region. “As you would expect from one of the world’s largest auto manufacturers, expectations for product quality and service level have been set very high, but we are confident we have the local manufacturing capabilities and expertise to deliver.” In fact, PPG’s close links with manufacturers such as Honda through its OEM coatings business means it is able to immediately provide refinish products and tools for current and new vehicles. This enables dealers to achieve precise colour matches for repairing these vehicles to their original condition. ■

The calculator makes use of recent data from the IMI’s ROI studies to allow businesses to measure the costs of hiring an apprentice against their own unique business requirements. 2013 saw the first rise in apprenticeship starts since 2010 and the IMI is aiming to use the calculator to drive continued growth in this area. The IMI’s study found that businesses can expect up to 300% return on investment from hiring an apprentice over a three year period. Furthermore, apprentices who start with no experience typically generated profit within 18 to 24 months– much earlier than was previously assumed. Businesses can now access their own unique forecast for free online and via

mobile. IMI CEO Steve Nash comments: “Automotive employers must overcome doubts about the financial costs of employing young people if we are to secure a successful future for our sector. IMI’s recent ROI research broke the myth that apprentices cost firms money and overwhelmingly demonstrated that there is a clear and significant financial return. The new calculator allows us to take our research into a business and demonstrate exactly how this relates to their unique situation. “Apprenticeships are currently a hot topic within government, with parties competing to develop viable alternatives to university. The motor industry is in a unique position to benefit from any positive developments. We must not miss the opportunity to draw high quality candidates into automotive careers because of myths about employing young people.”

The calculator is now available through online and via mobile at www.theimi.org.uk/calculator. Managers need only put in a few

details from their business and the app instantly tells them how much profit they could generate from each apprentice. ■

DAYCO

Dayco Technical Focus Ford 1.8-Litre Diesel Timing Drive System

F

ord’s popular 1.8-litre diesel unit, otherwise known as the Lynx engine, has been widely used to power various Fiesta, Focus, C-Max, S-Max, Mondeo, Galaxy, Tourneo Connect and Transit Connect models between 1998 and 2011. As well as being notable as the first mass production engine to feature a belt in oil, when in 2008 Dayco designed the system to supersede the previous chain driven high pressure injection pump, the engine has a reputation for simplicity, as it utilises one of the shortest timing belts in common use. This simplicity however, can create problems. Dayco, the world’s largest original equipment (OE) timing belt manufacturer and, with its unique High Tenacity (HT) or ‘white’ timing belt, the OE supplier for the Lynx engine, believes that many timing belt replacements undertaken on these units are not performed correctly and the consequences can be dire. The most serious issue is the failure of the replacement belt due to its incorrect tension and the reason

behind this often seems to be the fact that because the belt is so short and the drive system so simple - the injection pump pulley drives a single overhead camshaft with the use of a single tensioner the belt is frequently just changed, without the full installation process being followed. It is therefore crucial than technicians follow the correct installation procedure, which is explained here and is also available on Dayco Technical Information Sheet TI0157EN, which can be found on its website – www.dayco.com in the garage area. The necessary components come in Dayco timing belt kit KTB470. Early versions of the Lynx engine were fitted with manual tensioners and some with substandard camshaft pulleys. Those with manual tensioners need to be replaced with the automatic version, which is straightforward, but will require the internal angle on the timing case adjacent to the tensioner to be filed down by 0.5mm. Those fitted with a camshaft pulley stamped with an ‘AB’ identification mark, must replace them with a pulley with an ‘AC’ identification mark (OE XS4Q6A256AC) (see image 1).

The engine must be cold, so will have been left for at least four hours since it last ran. Once the old belt has been removed, make sure that the crankshaft is at TDC on cylinder number one and that the crankshaft arm rests against the timing pin (tool no. 303-193) (see image 2). Then make sure the flywheel-locking tool (303-393) is correctly installed and lock the camshaft with its special tool (303-376) (see image 3). Tighten the camshaft pulley bolt finger tight and then loosen it half a turn so that the pulley can rotate freely. Then fit the new tensioner (Dayco part number ATB1001), making sure that the Allen Key hole is at 3 o’clock and the mobile indicator is at 8 o’clock and lightly tighten the bolt. Ensuring that the arrow on the new timing belt corresponds to the direction of the rotation of the engine, install the belt (Dayco part number 941009) anti-clockwise starting at the injection pump pulley and make sure that there is no slack on the side without the tensioner. Then loosen the tensioner bolt and using the appropriate Allen Key, rotate the tensioner anti-clockwise until the mobile indicator is at 3 o’clock and the Allen Key hole is at 9 o’clock, (see image 4) then tighten the tensioner bolt to 50Nm. Lock the camshaft pulley with the special tool (205-072) and tighten the camshaft pulley bolt to 50 Nm. Then remove the timing pin, the flywheellocking tool and the camshaftlocking bar and rotate the crankshaft clockwise six revolutions and re insert the timing pin. Slowly rotate the crankshaft clockwise until reaching TDC on cylinder one until it stops against

the timing pin and refit the flywheellocking tool. The mobile indicator on the tensioner should still be in its 3 o’clock position, but if it has moved, the tensioning procedure must be repeated until it does not move and remains at 3 o’clock. Then check that the camshaft locking bar can easily be inserted and if so, permanently remove the timing pin, the flywheellocking tool and the locking bar and refit the blanking plug to the cylinder block. TECH TIPS

Mahle

Mahle Tech Tips light. If forged goods are discovered at a dealership, then the goods must be withdrawn and investigated. Following extensive checks, the goods are then confiscated and destroyed, and the manufacturer will face a large fine. The handling of low-grade products can also have far-reaching effects on the repair shop, particularly when an accident or breakdown occurs following the replacement of a part, and it is not possible to claim consequential damages under the warranty from the alleged original parts manufacturer. But even such small things as loss of power following a visit to a repair shop can lead to the customer losing trust… and the repair shop its customer.

W

ith the convergence of markets, the elimination of borders and trade barriers, and not forgetting the Internet, the business of counterfeiting is becoming increasingly prevalent. According to estimates by the German Anti-Counterfeiting Association, approximately 5–7% of global trade volume is made up of fake goods: piracy and counterfeiting are increasingly destroying capital and workplaces, damaging both industry and dealers… and ultimately endangering the end user. As a manufacturer of innovative, highquality vehicle components, MAHLE is far from safe from counterfeiting— whether it involves trademarks, patents, or registered designs. With wide-ranging measures across diverse fields, MAHLE is actively fighting against these illegal acts and supports its trading, repair shop, and engine repair partners in the identification of fake goods. For example, engine part, turbocharger, and thermostat packaging is equipped with intricate Tec Identify labels, which offer a high degree of protection against counterfeiting and the option of online verification. With this leaflet, we aim to provide you with information about the risks associated with using counterfeited vehicle components. And, above all, advise on how you can better protect your company, and the industry as a whole, against piracy and counterfeiting. 44 - garageTRADER

Safety hazard: when cheap becomes expensive. And dangerous. MAHLE products usually fulfil safetyrelated functions in vehicles. If cheap, poor-quality replicas are used in their place, they can lead to anything from serious engine damage to life-threatening situations for the passengers (e.g. fire hazard due to leaking fuel filters of low-grade production). Of course, safety also has its price. Complex functionality, ultra-high fit and load capacity, perfect co-ordination with other components, and high mileage are only some of the demands the vehicle components of today must meet in order for a vehicle to operate freely and safely. Similarly demanding are the specifications concerning development, material selection, and manufacturing in relation to original equipment products. And the financial investments that are required are equally high. Forgers cannot and will not raise such costs and therefore, quite simply, recklessly endanger the lives of passengers.

Therefore our advice is: only purchase goods from trustworthy dealers and investigate bargain offers particularly thoroughly.

Crime prevention: what we are doing to protect you. In order to hinder the production of illegal replicas and get on the trail of the counterfeiters, MAHLE’s strategy of attack covers a variety of levels and diverse fields:

Improper actions: the risks faced by trade and repair shops.

• Protecting product development from data theft • Surveillance of production • Constant market observation via Internet research and price analyses • Test purchases from suspect dealers, including at international trade shows • Global customs operations and training to help prevent the import and export of conspicuous goods within the boundaries of membership of the WCO (World Customs Organization) • Equipping packaging with a variety of security features • Product training for dealers and repair shops • Evaluation of customer feedback

Anyone who deals with counterfeit products makes himself liable. Ignorance does not protect against legal ramifications: the law requires that dealers check their goods before they are brought into circulation— particularly when evidence of a potential illegal replica comes to

The impact of this package of measures is strengthened through intensive cooperation with the authorities and other companies within the automotive industry. With a regular exchange of information about suspect sources, the measures

that have been implemented, and the experience gained as a result, more effective strategies against piracy and counterfeiting can be developed and realised.

Serious consequences: the legal ramifications. Every occurrence of piracy or counterfeiting discovered by MAHLE will be prosecuted. The company employs a zero-tolerance policy against manufacturers of fake goods. The legal measures that can be taken range from cease-and-desist declarations and confiscation of the goods to criminal complaints with large claims for damages.

Suspect plagiarism? How we support you. And how you support us—and the entire industry. If you suspect a case of piracy or counterfeiting—and, naturally, if you have any further questions on this subject—please do not hesitate to contact us. Simply send an e-mail to anti-counterfeit@mahle.com and our specialists will respond to you as quickly as they can. Make an active contribution to cleaning up the spare parts market so that all those concerned can continue to rely upon the high level of product and service quality as offered by MAHLE Aftermarket. Thank you for your help! ■

EcoBoost Timing Tool set

L

aser Tools has now started manufacturing their new timing tool set (part no: 5903) for the 1.6 litre EcoBoost engines as fitted to both Ford and Volvo models. Ford’s new high-efficiency petrol turbocharged direct injection engines offer reduced emissions, increased fuel economy and better performance, therefore vastly increased accuracy is necessary in the timed relationship between the crankshaft and camshafts of this engine. Accordingly the starting point must always be the initial set up (or timing) — accuracy is critical and technicians or even the home mechanic carrying out repairs that require disruption of the engine timing, need to be sure that they have a safe and effective method of resetting to the manufacturer’s specification.
