Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Hello and welcome

This is the first of our double issues the next one will be December/January - so remember to keep this issue until the end of July, when we'll be delivering the August magazine. With summer well on the way, there's lots on offer by way of activities and entertainment from Severn Valley Railway, Indigo Kings, Welland Steam Rally, to mention a few, so look out for them as you browse through. Pershore High School have some rising stars in the equestrian world (page 42), and don't forget the Cats Protection (page 18), who have are now well and truly settled into their beautiful new premises. We still need three more distributors for the new routes in Evesham, so if you need an incentive to get off the couch and go for a walk, or you know someone who'd like to earn a little "pin" money, give me a call. Happy reading.

Good Advertising ... ? A woman who was about eight months pregnant got on a bus. She noticed the man opposite her was smiling at her. She immediately moved to another seat. This time the smile turned into a grin, so she moved again. He seemed even more amused. When on the fourth move, the man burst out laughing, she complained to the driver and he had the man arrested. The case came up in court, and the Judge asked the man, who was about 20 years old, what he had to say for himself. The young man replied: "Well your Honor, it was like this: when the lady got on the bus, I couldn't help but notice her condition, and when she sat under an advert for sweets that said, "The Double Mint Twins are Coming" I had to smile. Then she moved and sat under another advert that said "Logan's Liniment will reduce the swelling", and I grinned. When she placed herself under a deodorant advert that said "William's Big Stick Did the Trick", I could hardly contain myself. BUT, your Honor, when she moved for the fourth time and sat under the sign that said "Goodyear Rubber could have prevented this Accident" ... I just lost it ...!" CASE DISMISSED!!

W

hen Tash and Sarah applied for the position of “barmen” at The Old Oak Inn in Drakes Broughton, they little thought that within a matter of days they would become the new managers of this popular local pub. The Old Oak Inn is just one of the eight pubs owned by Worcestershire businessman, Guy Stephenson, and when Sarah heard he needed a barman at the pub, she jumped at the chance. A few days later she and Tash were offered the opportunity to take over as joint managers, and the rest, as they say, is history. Tash, whose business background is in retail, is loving the challenge of the hospitality industry, and has quickly put her business skills to work to streamline systems at The Old Oak Inn. Sarah, to use her own words “… was born into the hospitality industry”, both parents having been publicans, and has worked in various pubs, including The Trumpet Inn in Evesham. Using their combined skills, Sarah and Tash, ably assisted by chef Adam, have introduced a range of new menus, both eat in and take away, with meals and specials to suit everyone. 12

On the entertainment side, there is the regular Monday night Curry & Quiz night, Friday nights’ steak special, live entertainment every second Saturday, Sunday lunch roasts and Family Day every second Sunday. In addition to these regular events, Sarah and Tash have a number of other special events planned through the year, so watch this space! And as if all of this isn’t enough to keep them busy, these two enterprising ladies have started a small garden centre in the backyard of the pub, offering a range of plants and compost for sale every day from 11am to 2pm. In the photo above are just some of the regulars who frequent The Old Oak Inn – those we were able to drag outside to brave the elements – and Sarah and Tash would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all the regulars who have shown so much support for them since they took over.

Posh Spice A

ny gardener will tell you that all the plants they grow are valuable, but the Saffron Crocus (Crocus Sativus) is in a world of its own. This beautiful autumn-blooming plant produces a flower from which we gather saffron, the quintessential seasoning for paella and other Mediterranean dishes - and perfect for adding to basmati rice for an authentic Indian curry! It is an incredible way to perfume your dishes. It has a slightly sweet but earthy taste which can be used to flavour both sweet and savoury recipes. The lilac-purple flowers produce vibrant red stigmas, which have been used for flavouring and colouring dishes since Roman times. The plant yields a highly prized spice (it would take up to 75,000 flowers to get a pound of saffron) which is also used to make dyes, as a treatment for mild-tomoderate depression and as an aphrodisiac. You don't need green fingers to grow it, either. It is easy to cultivate and unlike its spring-blooming cousins will put on a display of very colourful and highly-scented blooms. Just plant the bulbs in a sunny spot in your garden before the end of August - they will thrive in a well-drained border - or you can easily grow them in a container on the patio. Plus, they’re super-hardy and they’ll multiply rapidly from year to year.

The Saffron Crocus is hardy and becomes dormant in April once the foliage dies back. Flowering will commence approximately 40 days from planting, although some bulbs will not flower in the first year. Each bulb may produce up to six or more flowers over a period of about two weeks. Although most gardeners are unlikely to grow enough saffron to generate an income, it is certainly worth the effort of harvesting your own. To obtain saffron, the red stigmas need to be carefully removed with tweezers in the morning, as soon as the flowers are fully open. This needs to be done quickly, as the flowers barely last a day before they wither. Dry the strands off on tissue paper in a dark place and they can then be stored in an airtight container. Once cut and dried, they can be stored in an airtight jar for several years. Each bulb will only last one season and will be replaced by one to ten new ones. The new bulbs produced grow above the old ones and will gradually creep nearer the surface so it will be necessary to lift and replant them every few years. This is best done in August. Most bulb suppliers will offer growing instructions to explain how easy it is to harvest the saffron, but it’s not vital that you do so - you may just wish to enjoy the lovely autumn flowers.

older cats looking for a new home, and kitten season has started so we will soon have little ones looking for a permanent home too.

The new premises is still taking shape but it is a lovely new environment for the cats, and for the volunteers to work in. We've kept the same friendly and inviting atmosphere at the new rescue, ensuring visitors and cats alike are all relaxed.

Please consider giving a rescue cat a home: the cats in our care may have had a happy home and find themselves with us through no fault of their own. We also have a range of products for sale at the centre, such as cat carry baskets, dishes and blankets, so we can provide everything you need for a cat adoption.

n the 1st May, the new Evesham Cats Protection rescue centre opened it's doors to the public, after a hectic time of moving cats and equipment.

At present, we are welcoming visitors to come and have a look round and view the cats for homing, and for a limited time, we are offering refreshments to our visitors. Among our "residents" there are still some

Bay Watch for Birthday Boy!

S

utton, the baby elephant born at West Midland Safari Park, was one year old on 5th May 2015 and he has been enjoying some extra special birthday treats put on courtesy of his doting keepers.

suggestions (not only via social media, but also by phone and email) were the names Stephen and Sutton, generating around 2,000 each. The total number of names reached just under 5,000 in a month.

One such treat was to create a baby-elephantsized sand castle with all the trimmings. It appeared that once Sutton spied the flags on top of the castle turrets, it was game on for some fun. The castle became a great source of curiosity and it wasn't long before Sutton took hold of the sand rake to knock the castle back into shape after a bit of rough and tumble.

Therefore, staff unanimously decided to call our baby elephant, Sutton".

Head Elephant Keeper, Andy Plumb said, "Staff remember the time, twelve months ago, all too well. We eagerly and rather nervously awaited the birth of our first ever baby elephant in the Park's 42-year history. The bouncing baby boy was born at 5.30pm on Monday, 5th May 2014 after a 22- month pregnancy and weighed in at a healthy 100kg! Today, Sutton is a robust little animal that tops the scales at 370kg - that's just over 58 stone! We expect that he will continue to gain weight at a steady 20kg every month". Andy, continued, "Staff pondered over a suitable name for the precious new youngster for weeks. Unable to reach a conclusion, we decided it was time to let our followers on social media choose and so we launched a competition. It soon became evident that there were two names that were going to be the clear winners. An overwhelming number of around 4,000 20

Besides the youngster, West Midland Safari Park has two female African Elephants - mum 23-year old Five and 'aunt' Latabe, 22. Both Five and Latabe arrived at West Midland Safari Park in 1998, when they were just six and five years old respectively and measured barely 5ft to the shoulder. Orphaned by the shooting of their mothers at a few days old, Five and Latabe were hand reared in a private elephant orphanage near Pretoria, South Africa, with countless others suffering the same plight. When the babies outgrew the orphanage, new homes were sought, hence their arrival at West Midland Safari Park. Elephant Keeper, Andy Plumb has cared for both Five and Latabe since the very first day they arrived at the Park 18 years ago. West Midland Safari Park and the Adventure Theme Park is open daily until 6th November 2015. For further information call:

I

t was 750 years ago that Prince Edward (future King Edward I) took down the outnumbered forces headed up by Simon de Montfort. De Montfort, the 6th Earl of Leicester, lead the forces against Henry III in the second Baron’s War between 1263 – 1265. On 4th August 1265 de Montfort along with his son, stood against a 6000 strong army and were both killed. On land that is now given over to agriculture - where now sheep graze and cereals are grown - stand two memorials to these events. The first is a folly, the Leicester Tower, standing to the west of Abbey Manor House with a stone plaque, which reads, “This tower was erected in the year c1842 to the memory of Simon de Montfort, the 6th Earl of Leicester, the father and founder of the British House of Commons who was slain in the Battle of Evesham in the year 1265”. The second, an obelisk, bears a poem and inscriptions suggesting that some 10,000 perished during this horrendous battle although it is generally thought to be more like 4000.

Anniversary of the killed, and it is also the year in which we celebrate the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta. And so it will be that on the 9th and 10th of August and in the days leading up to this weekend, there will be commemorative activities, culminating in the re-enactment of this local battle. There will be a whole host of fascinating things to see and experience: historic walks and talks, period costume in abundance, a medieval banquet and medieval battle re-enactments.

2015 is the anniversary of the battle during which the founder of our modern Parliament was 24

Battle of Evesham article & photos by Brian Joyce

If you want to see medieval archers and artillery in action, perhaps find out what a trebuchet is or just taste the atmosphere (and the ale and food, of course) of the 13th Century in the Living History Encampment, then come along to the riverside in Evesham. Hot food and drink, including a specially brewed Battle Beer, a hog roast, medieval cooking and even a Farmer’s Market and Craft Fayre. Experience the music of the day, let the kids try on the armour or maybe play war games on the table, I hasten to add! Join in the Treasure Hunt or follow the Treasure Trails, go on one of the guided tours or even a ghost tour – not for the faint-hearted! Take part in or watch the parade which takes place on Saturday morning. You

can wait in Crown Meadow for the re-enactors to arrive in the Main Arena, watch the wreath laying in Abbey Park en route, or simply follow the ‘armies’ as they start off in the Town Centre and head into battle by the River Avon. Before the event, take a tour of all of the activities and find out lots more from the official website:

http://www.battleofevesham.co.uk/ If you want to get involved in other ways participate or perhaps sponsor - then please go to the website above and contact the organisers or simply email Antonia direct at:

Antonia@battleofevesham.co.uk There are a number of pre-event activities proposed which include workshops for young people and the community, opportunities for local artists to get involved and also for amateur dramatic groups to participate. You can even try your hand at creating a design for the Battle of Evesham, Simon de Montfort or Evesham and then have your design flown as a flag around the Town. Don’t miss this unique and special occasion. I shall definitely be there, camera in hand and maybe even a glass of Battle Beer too, when they fire off that Trebuchet … hope you’ll join me.

A Prickly Friend article & photos by Pamela Green

E

veryone has a soft spot for hedgehogs, in spite of their prickles. It’s because of these prickles that they are so easily recognised. They are friendly creatures, but sadly suffer from the dangers of modern life. Mowers, strimmers, poisons, and dogs threaten their survival in many areas. The hedgehog is a nocturnal animal and will roam three miles in one night. Our gardens are particularly good habitat for them, and they can help us a lot. Every gardener knows that the hedgehog is his friend. They will eat up lots of slugs and snails, protecting your plants. If you already have them in your garden, you will know the benefits, as each hedgehog can eat up to 80 of these pesky creatures in one night. If you’re keen to go organic but are having problems with slugs and snails, encouraging hedgehogs into your garden could be the answer. Be especially careful where you leave garden netting as the hedgehogs can easily get tangled up in it and dehydrate. They love hedges, but if your garden is fenced you could cut three inch holes at the bottom, and then the hedgehogs can come in when they please. They can swim and are sometimes attracted to garden ponds, but they may drown if they cannot get back out, so it’s important to keep pond levels topped up making it easier for them to climb out.

26

When I visited Vale Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre, I saw many baby hedgehogs that had been bought into the centre. They have a dedicated hedgehog home that was built with a legacy from Lilian Andrews. She left a very generous amount for the centre to build a temperature-controlled room, with 150 cages, dedicated to hedgehogs. Each animal has a chart, with details of when it came to the hospital, where it was found and any illness it suffered. When they are fit to be released they are taken back to where they were found and set free. The Vale Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre relies heavily on donations. They receive lots of fresh Vegetables and fruit from supermarkets, and a great deal of canned food and newspapers from the general public. You can also help by joining the membership scheme. Remember, unless absolutely necessary, hedgehogs should not be touched or picked up. It’s better to leave them where they are, unless of course they have been injured. If you find a hedgehog in need of help you can call the Vale Wildlife Hospital on, 01386 882288, they are open from 7.30am –8pm.

Clare Gibbard, the SVR’s marketing and communications manager said: “Always extremely popular with families, this year’s Steam & Whistle Activity Club features some new additions which will add even more excitement to the programme. “There’s no need to book and activities are free with a Freedom of the Line ticket or Annual Family Pass, so why not combine a visit to the club with a great day out on the Railway? There’s a whole lot to learn about and explore.” The Severn Valley Railway is now celebrating its 50th anniversary with a range of events and activities, including a new Sounds of the 60s event, on 14th to16th August. It is also offering visitors the chance to win a unique, VIP behind the scenes SVR experience day through a special Golden Ticket competition, launching in July – its birthday month. For more information on all events, activities and bookings, visit www.svr.co.uk, call 01562 757900 or visit the Severn Valley Railway Families Facebook page.

7 Family Friendly Weeknight Dinner Recipes

A

client recently asked me to share my best tip for losing a lot of fat quickly. She exercises regularly but wanted another way to accelerate her results. Can you guess what I answered? Stop eating unhealthy, high calorie dinners. This is a tough one for most of you. Life, work and family are hectic and time consuming, so the concept of eating a healthy, simply prepared dinner seems completely out of reach. The truth is that we overcomplicate the idea of a healthy dinner. I suspect this is because we are so used to eating out at restaurants where dishes are accompanied by sides, sauces and garnishes. Here are seven truly healthy dinners that are quick and simple to make. 1) Roasted Broccoli & Poached Eggs: Toss chopped broccoli with a little olive oil, sea salt and minced garlic, and roast on a baking sheet at 220°C for 25 minutes. Drizzle with lemon juice and serve with poached eggs. 2) Slow Cooker Beef Short Ribs & Sautéed Kale: Brown 8 beef short ribs in a skillet with coconut oil. Place in a slow cooker with 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 teaspoon of coconut palm sugar, 1 tablespoon of apple

32

cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon crushed garlic, 1 tablespoon crushed ginger and ½ teaspoon ground red pepper. Cover and cook on high for 6 hours. Serve with sautéed kale. 3) Super Greens Salad & Roasted Chicken: Combine a mixture of super greens in a large bowl: baby spinach, beet leaves, arugula and kale. Top with sliced, grilled chicken and drizzle with balsamic vinegar glaze. 4) Baked Catfish & Shredded Cabbage: Grease a casserole dish with olive oil and scatter 1 tablespoon of chopped coriander over the bottom of the dish. Wash and pat dry 4 catfish fillets. Rub the fillets with curry powder, sea salt and sweet paprika. Lay the fillets evenly in the dish, over the coriander. Drizzle the fillets with lemon juice and sprinkle with chopped garlic. Bake for 30 minutes at 175°C. Serve with shredded cabbage. 5) Stir Fried Chicken & Veggies on Cauliflower Rice: Sauté chicken breasts, sliced onions and sliced bell peppers in a skillet with olive oil. Season with sea salt, black pepper and fajita seasoning. Set aside. Cut a head of cauliflower into small pieces and run through a food processor with the grating attachment. Sauté the grated cauliflower for 5 minutes in a skillet with a teaspoon of olive oil. Serve the

chicken and veggies on top of the cauliflower rice with a side of soy sauce. 6) Smoked Salmon Omelette & Sliced Tomatoes: Whisk together 3 eggs with a sprinkle of sea salt and black pepper. Cook in a heated skillet with a teaspoon of olive oil. Line the egg with smoked salmon and a sprinkle of grated cheese. Fold the egg over the salmon and cheese, and serve with sliced tomatoes.

YOU WILL NEVER OUT TRAIN A BAD DIET

7) One Pot Chicken & Veggies: In a large skillet, brown ½kg chicken breats in olive oil. Season with sea salt, black pepper, dried basil, crushed rosemary, sweet paprika, dried thyme, dried parsley and cumin. Add 4 cups of chopped veggies (courgette, onion, tomatoes) and 4 cloves of chopped garlic. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes, until tender and fully cooked. You see, healthy dinners can be quite simple to prepare. Don’t get too hung up on the exact measurements of ingredients and instead focus on combining a handful of quality ingredients together in a delicious way. There’s no such thing as a dinner that’s too simple when nutritious, wholesome ingredients are used. Don’t forget that a consistent, challenging exercise programme is the key to getting and staying fit and lean. If you’ve been dragging your feet about joining one of my programs then today is the day! Call or email and let’s get started! If you want to find out more or are interested in Personal Training, Group Training or attending any of the Fitness Classes I offer, go to www.almfitness.co.uk for more information. Alternatively call Amy on 07740 366419 or email info@ almfitness.co.uk

Roast Pheasant

Pheasant makes a nice change from chicken, and this recipe gives a richness to the meat, while madeira gravy adds something special. 2 pheasants 1 apple, chopped 4 rashers streaky bacon seasoning For the gravy: 2 tbsp madeira 1-2 tsp arrowroot or cornflour 300ml game or chicken stock

• Preheat the oven to 190C, 375F, gas mark 5. • Lay the rashers of bacon over the breast meat and put some apple and pepper into the main cavity of the birds. • Place birds in a large roasting tin, pour the stock around the outside and roast for 45-55 minutes, or until the birds are cooked. • When the pheasants are cooked, lift onto a carving board, cover with foil and leave to stand for 10 minutes. • Prepare the gravy: Tip the cooking juices into a jug and skim away excess fat. If necessary, make up to 300ml with water. • Return the juices to the roasting tin with the madeira and bring to the boil, simmering for a few minutes until a good flavour is obtained. • Mix the arrowroot or cornflour with a little water and blend into the hot stock. • Season to taste with pepper and strain into a gravy boat. • Serve the pheasant with the gravy and a selection of roasted vegetables and/or parsnip chips.

First Place for Charlotte

C

harlotte Albutt, a Year 9 student at Pershore High school, was crowned winner in the Individual Intermediate Class at the National Schools Hunter Trial run by Winchester House School at Foxhill Farm, Northamptonshire on Sunday 10th May.

course at Foxhill Farm, not only going clear but also within a specified time. Charlotte rode a perfect round to claim first prize, receiving a beautiful rosette and rug for her efforts, as well the acclamation of winning in such a big class against so many riders from other schools.

Charlotte was riding her new horse, Ballyanne Boy, but the partnership looks set for great things in the season ahead. There were more than 60 competitors in the class involving riders tackling the challenging cross country

Charlotte is one of four of Pershore High School’s Equestrian Team that has been successful in getting entry to ride at The Royal Windsor Horse show on Saturday 16th May in the Inter Schools Show Jumping.

jumping class representing the school. It’s a long way to go but to compete at such a high level event will be a very exciting opportunity.

Entries for this class at the show are always massively over subscribed and so entry is extremely difficult. This year they have been successful and so 4 riders, Sophie Coll, Jessica Thomas, Charlotte Albutt and Erin Carvill (pictured below) will take part in the 90cm show

Hopes are high for the team following Charlotte Albutt’s win on Sunday 10th May in the Winchester House School National Schools Hunter Trials and Jessica Thomas’ continued success in the Working Hunter classes that she is also competing in at The Royal Windsor Horse Show on Saturday and Sunday.
