The annual Pershore Plum Festival is well underway and a major highlight in that calendar is the Plum Fayre held in and around the town, with a sprinkling of activities, happenings and interesting things going on in the town centre and the Abbey grounds. Whether you sought goods and preserves in Plum Alley, kids entertainment and the beautiful birds of prey (www.cerr.co.uk) in Plum Parade, or perhaps goods & chattles (and even more preserves, most with a plummy flavour) in the Plum Bazaar and Broad Street, then there was something for everyone. Needless to say the kids were catered for too with the fairground rides, pony rides and boat trips on St Georges Field. War memorabilia (photo) or cooking demo, vintage cars or hot pork baps, plum jam/sausages or cheeses, craft exhibition or balloon animals (photo), music or drumming practise, there truly was something to interest everyone.

and colours. Some serious automotive history, as well as folks dressed in the clothes of the period to match. I don’t know if it is politically correct to admit to drooling in public but salivate I did! And just for the record, I wasn’t the ONLY one!

If, like the author, vintage cars fascinate you then the Abbey grounds was definitely the place to be. From Austin to Volkswagen, Buick to Wolseley, Ford Consul to Mini, Riley and Rolls Royce and many, many more; there were literally hundreds of them everywhere you looked, in all shapes, sizes

Although the weather (again!) closed in later in the afternoon, by that time everyone had the opportunity to enjoy what Pershore had to offer. If head count of population attending was the parameter used to judge then this event was certainly a success!

The folks came out in droves, braced the elements and packed out the town centre. Judging by the number of people seen around the Town munching on pork baps, these were definitely a serious hit. The author is not too sure if there was any plum flavouring involved or not but it didn’t seem to matter to those doing the munching.

Words of Wisdom for Prince Harry . . . ??? An American, an Australian and an Englishman went for a hike one day. It was very hot day and they were soon sweating and exhausted. Then they came upon a small lake, and as it was fairly secluded, they took off all their clothes and jumped into the water. Feeling refreshed, the trio then decided to pick a few berries while enjoying their freedom. Suddenly, as they were crossing an open field, a group of ladies from a nearby town appeared. Unable to get to their clothes in time, the American and the Australian quickly used their hands to cover their privates, but the Englishman covered his face while they ran for cover. After the ladies had left and the men got their clothes back on, the American and the Australian asked the Englishman why he covered his face rather than his private parts? The Englishman replied, "I don't know about you, but in my country, it's the face that people recognize!"

Free Rugby Fun Day For Children Children of all ages can now try out any type of rugby, for free, thanks to Pershore Rugby Club, who are holding an open rugby fun day on Sunday 14th October. Any child can simply drop in to the club and have a go at a range of rugby skills, for free, at hourly workshops led by qualified coaches, any time, from 11am until 3pm. And a series of mini games will be staged to give them a taste of whichever type of rugby takes their fancy: traditional rugby union (15-aside or sevens); tag rugby for little ones; or the increasingly popular, non contact, touch rugby, for which Pershore has been recognised by the RFU as one of the fastest growing centres in the Midlands, for children and adults. There will be a bouncy castle, BBQ and refreshments and free on-site parking for the event at the club’s riverside grounds in Mill Lane, Wyre Piddle. Ben Andrews from Pershore Juniors section says that there has already been a lot of interest from local children coming to the event: “So many children have been inspired to get active by the summer of sport that we have all enjoyed. This is a fabulous opportunity for all ages of children to have fun and get fit too, trying out rugby in a safe and friendly, family environment. Obviously, we hope that they will all enjoy it so much that they will want to come back for more and come and join us for junior training, in whichever type of rugby they like best, on a Sunday morning from 10am – 12 noon.” “We pride ourselves on offering children a great start in any type of rugby, and who knows, they may end up going all the way to Olympic gold; Seven’s rugby after all, will be an Olympic sport at Rio in four years’ time, so who knows where rugby might take them!”

Anyone wanting further information should contact: Ben Andrews on mobile: 07779 927 852 or e-mail prfc.juniors@hotmail.co.uk 12

PAUL COOPER Plastering, Rendering and Screeding Services Overskim Old Walls and Artex

Pershore Volunteer Centre aims to provide varied and valued services for local people and local communities throughout our rural area. We are currently working with local Community Transport partners in Evesham and Worcester Volunteer Centres to expand and enhance our existing services to improve the availability of transport in rural villages throughout Worcestershire, and in particular the rural wards in the Wychavon and Malvern Hills districts. Our aim is to recruit a minimum of 60 new volunteers and to register at least 100 new passengers before the end of the year to create a better transport network and more efficient service for rural areas. Community Transport schemes are a great way to keep rural communities alive and connected; they reduce social isolation by supporting people who are unable to use public transport and who have no access to their own or a family member’s car. Typical journeys include attendance at medical appointments, shopping, or visiting friends and relatives. The project enables people who would otherwise find it difficult to travel to maintain their independence at a reasonable cost. Volunteer drivers receive a generous mileage allowance. If you would like more information about our work, or to register as a passenger or a volunteer driver, please contact Laura Synnuck Worcester 01386 554299 Volunteer Centre

Six Steps to Choosing Heathly, Life-Giving Foods for You & Your Family If you can’t pronounce a word on the label, don’t eat it! If you struggle to pronounce a word on a food label then there is a good chance it is a chemical that your liver will have to work to detoxify, and almost certainly, your liver won’t like it! When researching healthy people Dr. Price found that they ate mostly unprocessed whole-foods and some minimally processed foods. They lived in accordance with the laws of Mother Nature and so should you if you want to have a beautiful, healthy, age defying body. If it’s a non-food, don’t eat it! Your body is much more likely to go bankrupt the more non-foods you eat. One thing you should remember is that food manufacturers do NOT need to prove that their products will sustain life. Pretty much every penny they spend is to find ways to make foods cheaper, increase shelf life and trick you into buying them. The best rule you can live by is “The more money they spend to market any food, the worse it is likely to be for you”! Good healthy life giving food needs little marketing because people understand it’s good for you. Makers of non-foods need to convince you to eat their rubbish, so they need to spend millions in marketing to make sure you do. 16

The longer it lasts on the shelf, the worse it is for you! In nature most things will not last more than a couple of days once they have been picked or killed for consumption. So to increase a product’s shelf life anything that can eventually go bad or rancid must be stripped from it, this includes important enzymes, vitamins and minerals. Ultimately it’s life force! So much of the food eaten today is so full of chemicals and pesticide residues it can be left sitting around for days on end. Even the ants won’t touch them! They are smarter than we are! Never eat anything with “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated oils/fats” in it! These are the kind of fats that have been cooked and altered in some way that makes it very difficult for your body to digest as well as being extremely damaging to the body. This form of fat does not occur naturally and is manufactured. In fact, chemists say the molecular structure of hydrogenated fats more closely resembles plastic than food! Look at your food labels and you will more than likely be surprised at how much hydrogenated fats and oils you are eating! Be careful though food manufacturers are clever. They understand people are wising

up to this and now manufacture other fats and then claim their products have no hydrogenated fat. Check your labels. Never eat any food product that has been “enriched”! There is only one reason as to why food manufacturers need to “enrich” foods. This is because they have completely killed and destroyed them in processing, leaving the foods so void of nutrition and lifeforce that they need to add things back to them so they don’t kill off all their customers! If you read “Beating The Food Giants” by food scientist Paul A. Stitt, he tells you that the food manufacturers purchase the cheapest possible synthetic vitamins possible and they often apply them to foods (i.e. cereals) on the way in the oven! Any nutrition expert will tell you that most vitamins can’t withstand high heat and most of the rigors of processing. There is also plenty of literature suggesting that some synthetic vitamins may be toxic to the body!

In 1776 there was a Workhouse accommodating 80 inmates in Holy Cross parish, situated outside the town on the Worcester Road. The majority of Workhouses intended that life should be so unpleasant that the able bodied would be persuaded to look for work instead of seeking shelter there. Inmates were expected to rise early and undertake tedious chores such as wood chipping, stone breaking and even bone crushing; punishments for slacking were very harsh. The Overseers had discretion in the way they relieved those fallen on hard times and where possible tried to keep folk in their own homes by giving a weekly dole, with grants of food, clothing and fuel.

Official recipes included pea soup, gruel and rice pudding with occasional butter, cheese or meat, whilst 1oz of tea leaves would be used to make 10 pints of tea. Diets varied according to age and health but the days were long, starting at 6am with bed at 8pm. Conditions were so bad that in 1904 a tramp refused to do his allotted tasks saying he'd sooner go to gaol since the food was better!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

So, what have ferns ever done for us? ". . . well, ferns don't really do anything, do they? I mean, they don't flower!" With a sharp intake of breath, I paused, my pen held aloft midsentence, whilst noting down my client's plant wish list. Twenty minutes discussion on form and texture later, they enthusiastically select fifty ferns for their woodland garden.

Asplenium scolopendrium 'Crispum Cristatum'

Back at the nursery, I quietly wandered through the fern house, forced to confront this notion again. What is it about ferns I find so absorbing, that other people miss? Firstly I am drawn by their Iushness, dense carpets of bright apple green through teal, jungle, olive, to dark forest green, with every verdant hue in between. Subtle artistic highlights of royaI purple, chestnut dances on emerging fronds, burgundy suffused stems or carmine-edged leaves. Complex lacy fronds (Dryopteris austriaca 'Crispa Whiteside’), overlapping fans (Polystichum setiferum Congestum), ruffled, crested (Dryopteris affinis 'The King’), matt or glossy, fragile or thick and leathery (Polystichum polyblepharum) the variations of shape, texture and style is fascinating. No wonder the Victorians were smitten.

Dryopteris erythrosora

Secondly, in this oasis of calm, I am assailed by wafts of sweet, earthy aromas, evoking memories of childhood summers exploring pine woods. My first encounters with our native glossy-leaved Hart's tongue fern (Asplenium scolopendrium), the dramatic male shield fern (Dryopteris filix mas) and the delightful little Polypody (Polypodium vulgare). Thus began my lasting love affair with this ancient plant. Not known for making a significant contribution to global economies, some ferns are gathered as food crops, others clean contaminated soil, remove airborne chemical pollutants or feature in the world of medicine, art and mythology. Closer to home, they provide wildlife habitats in your own garden.

Dryopteris affinis 'Crispa Congesta'

24

Their main role, however, is ornamental. Plant them to punctuate a large border, instil leafy serenity on busy floral displays or introduce a touch of 'Jurassic Park'.

Who needs flowers? Combine Dryopteris atrata with Fargesia nitida and Pachysandra 'Green Sheen' for simple but sophisticated architectural style. Ferns also have a long season of interest; fronds last for six months (all year for evergreen species). How many herbaceous perennials can claim that? Try using ferns in a different way: Foliage for floristry: Dryopteris erythrosora and D. eryth. 'Prolifica', young chestnut coloured fronds mature through biscuit to deep olive green. In pots for shady courtyards: elegant fronds of the Japanese Polystichum tsus simense or the diminutive Dryopteris affinis 'Crispa Congesta'. Grow in dry stone walls: where Asplenium scolopendrium is very happy; use Asplenium trichomanes for tiny crevices. Superb under-story for tall deciduous shrubs: Lime green fronds of crested hart's tongue (Asplenium scolopendrium 'Crispum Cristatum') against fluorescent scarlet winter stems of Cornus alba 'Westonbirt'

Pershore & Evesham 2012 Party in The Park Article & Photography by Brian Joyce

Party in the Park is an annual event held and hosted by the Wychavon District Council Development Team - www. wychavon.gov.uk/communitydevelopment - and provides the opportunity for local children to do something just a little different, during their school holidays. Each year in Pershore, Evesham and Droitwich the organisers, Mark Williams, Tracy Grubb and Laura Bernard (photo) and the other members of the seven strong Team set out their wares. This year there was a climbing wall, a plethora of activities including an art workshop, face painting and henna decoration, tennis, a free circus practise area, live performers and bands from the W Factor Talent Show held earlier in the year, the Youth Bus, food and goody stands and a whole load more to boot, including stands from some local organisations such as the Girl Guides, where the kids could sign up and join. In the early days, nine years ago, there were just a few skate board ramps, some 26

music and basketball. Over the years it has slowly been built into a real community happening which was evidenced by the numbers and turnout in both locations visited by the author. The queues were long for the henna and face painting, but the circus arena was also packed with kids eager to try out the various activities, such as stilt walking and juggling. Despite the rain trying once again to interfere in the Pershore event, it was soon seen off by the sunshine in the early afternoon and things kicked off once again. Nice to hear and see some very talented local musicians, and especially to listen to the winners of the W Factor, the Blue Monday Jazz Quartet. Very talented young men. It was really fabulous to see so many happy smiling faces and to watch the kids enjoying themselves in the fresh air. The concept is a great one, so well done the WDC Development Team: long may they get funding and support to put on these events.

My Worcestershire Free Solar FREE solar panels means:  

My Worcestershire Free Solar is all about giving away free solar to qualifying properties in Worcestershire. There are no fees, no catches. FREE.

Your electricity bill will reduce – saving you money You will be reducing your carbon footprint, helping the environment, and helping the country reach it’s carbon efficiencies targets

How can we do this? In April 2010 the government introduced an initiative called the FIT Scheme. The FIT scheme allows investors to be paid for all the electricity that panels generate. This means that if you let us put panels on your roof, you benefit from free electricity, and we sell what is left over back to the grid.     

You must own your property (mortgaged is fine) Have a south facing roof or within 30 degrees of south Your roof must be free from shading No slate roofs, thatched roofs, or listed buildings Have 24 square metres of interrupted space on your roof (larger semi detached and detached properties on the whole are fine)
