As you may recall, last month the editor Chantal Baker, told you that she and Matthew have sold The Caterham Link and the Kenley & Purley Link to my company, Grapevine Publications, and we decided to combine the two magazines into one . . . The Link. The main reason for doing this is that we feel it benefits everyone – advertisers and readers – to have one larger publication covering the same area as the two smaller ones. Our advertisers get a wider coverage without incurring additional expense, and our readers get access to more businesses and services. I hope you like the new look of the magazine. As with our other two publications we like to use eye-catching photos for the front cover. The rather gorgeous chap on the front this month was right outside my office window merrily munching on apple-blossom, when my husband (our resident photographer) took this photograph. We also like to have local writers contribute to the magazines, and this month we’ve had great articles from the Surrey Wildlife Trust, The Surrey Police and the Caterham & District Horticultural Society. As we are still building up our panel of contributors, we’ve “borrowed” a few articles from our other publications, but would much prefer to have these from local writers. So, if you would like to contribute items about the local area, history, organisations, etc., please do get in touch. I hope you enjoy reading this first issue of The Link, and if you'd like to advertise, go online to www.grapevine publications.co.uk where you will find details of the advert sizes and relevant rates, or give me a call. And that’s all from me this month, so until next time, keep happy and healthy.

Caterham Oxted & Godstone Lions Club District 105SE England

Celebrating 100 years of Lions serving their communities

Lions News For November

C

OGs have always supported the work that is carried out by St Catherine’s Hospice and this year was able to donate £1000 towards their Creative Therapy programme which is led by a professional artist. The programme aims to develop a patient’s self-esteem and to help them, among other things, to create memory boxes for their relatives. The Club also presented the Hospice with 100 bulbs which will add early colour to its garden. The bulbs were given to mark the 100 years of Lions Clubs International. The Children’s Trust at Tadworth was also presented with a hundred bulbs. In June last year many residents of Caterham on the Hill suffered the consequences of terrible flooding which meant that many had to leave their homes. Through a donation of several thousands of pounds, the Club has been able to help victims get their homes back in order and to replace things such as carpets, computers and even share in the cost rebuilding a wall. At the end of the school year Lion President Ian Macaulay and wife Lynne attended Oxted School’s Senior Prize Giving and presented a book token to the value of £100 to Hannah Belok who is going to Oxford to study maths. The prize is given in memory of the late Lion Arthur Sambles who was a mathematician. The next event being organised by the Club is an English Dinner Evening at the White Hart Barn on 18th November. There will be a three course dinner served,

Homeopathy . . .

helping the body to heal itself

T

he principle of treating ‘like with like’ dates back to Hippocrates (460 – 377 BC) but in its current form homeopathy has been used worldwide for more than 200 years. It recognises that all symptoms of ill health are an expression of disharmony within the whole person – and that it is the patient that needs treating, not the disease. Homeopathy was founded by a German doctor called Samuel Hahnemann (1745 – 1843). He was shocked by the harsh medical treatments of the day which included blood-letting, purging and the use of poisons such as arsenic. Hahnemann was also a translator and it was while he was translating a medical book that he noticed that the action of quinine was such that it could cause symptoms similar to malaria, and yet it was used to treat that condition. He began to think about the idea of curing conditions with what he called ‘similars.’ For instance, homeopaths cure rashes with medicines made from stinging nettles and colds and hay fever are treated by tablets made from alum sepia (red onion). Many substances used – like belladonna (deadly nightshade) – are poisonous if taken in their raw state. Homeopathic medicines contain only a tiny trace of the original materials used and are totally safe. It is important to buy medication from a homeopath or reputable supplier. Never attempt to make your own – you could end up doing more harm than good.

22

When you visit a homeopath for the first time, he or she will take a detailed case history in order that they can build up a complete picture of you as a person. Questions asked might include things like: • Do you prefer hot or cold drinks? • What sort of music do you listen to? • What do you worry about? • Which parts of your body are affected when you get stressed? The initial consultation may take an hour or longer and the homeopath will decide, based on the answers you have given, which medication is best to try first. A few useful remedies for common conditions are: Arnica (tablets or cream) for bruises. Never use on an open wound. Belladonna for sunburn or sunstroke Ruta for eye strain Apis for wasp stings and cystitis Nux vomica for hangovers When using homeopathic medicine, follow the instructions carefully. For best results, don’t eat, drink or clean your teeth for fifteen minutes before and after taking tablets.

For instance, if you took nux vomica for a hangover you would notice an immediate improvement. However your symptoms would return – possibly more severely – if you drank a cup of coffee immediately after taking the tablets. Some important points to remember: • Make sure the person you consult is a member of the Society of Homeopaths. • Take any medication in accordance with instructions. Never take more than the stated dose. • Don’t try making your own medication – many of the raw ingredients used are highly toxic. • If symptoms worsen, consult a doctor. 7 Ways to Reduce Body Fat

G

ot body fat? While fat loss can be quite frustrating, these 7 strategies are proven to help you slim down fast, which is something that we all need with Christmas approaching. 1) Drink more Water Water is always a crucial element for proper bodily functions and even more so when fat loss is your goal. The conversion of fat into energy takes place in your liver and this process requires that you be well hydrated. Drinking plenty of water, at least 2 litres over the course of your day is a wonderful goal to aim for. This goal is easily met when you get into the habit of sipping water throughout the day, coupled with drinking a full glass before meals, upon waking and before bed. 2) Cut out Alcohol This fat loss tip is always met with groans (especially difficult

26

over the festive season), but despite its unpopularity it remains one of the most effective. The first reason that alcohol should be cut out in order to lose fat is that it’s filled with empty calories. These are simple sugars that taste great but add up quickly as stored fat in all the wrong places. The second reason that alcohol should be cut out is that the simple energy that your body derives from the alcohol will be used as energy long before your fat stores are tapped, making it impossible to reduce body fat on days when alcohol is consumed. That should be incentive enough for you to put down your glass and reach for some water. 3) Do a Variety of Cardio Variety is key when it comes to the cardio side of your routine. Getting in calorie-burning activities is crucial to quickly

eliminating fat stores. We no longer believe that long cardio sessions are the holy grail of fat loss – but getting your body moving with calorie-burning activities is a wonderful way to intensify your fat loss results. The great thing about cardio activities is that these can and should be fun! Hiking, biking, swimming, jogging, brisk walking – any activity that requires you to move your body for a decent duration of time and break a nice sweat in the process. 4) Cut out Processed Junk This is one of the easiest ways to quickly and effectively reduce body fat, and yet it is met with such resistance. Why? Why is it so difficult for us to give up our packaged, processed snacks and treats? This is one obstacle that prevents most people from achieving the body that they want.

muscle translates to a higher metabolism, which means that your body will naturally burn fat faster and more efficiently.

The best tip for successfully getting processed junk food out of your life is to have wholesome alternatives on hand while removing the junk food from your home. If you are a late night snacker, then be prepared by having fresh fruit, sliced vegetables, plain Greek yogurt or other wholesome snack replacements on hand. When your belly is full of wholesome snacks, it’s hard to care too much about the processed junk you missed out on. And soon you’ll learn to love how lean and energetic these healthier foods make you feel.

6) Use HIIT High Intensity Interval Training is a method that has been quite popular in the past decade – and for good reason. This advanced form of aerobics, when done correctly, is one of the most effective methods for burning fat. HIIT is achieved by performing short, intense bursts of aerobic intervals between less intense bouts of aerobics. For example, 2 minutes of walking followed by a 30 second sprint, done for 20 minutes.

7) Work with a Fitness Professional When your car needs new brakes, you take it the mechanic. When you wake up with a fever and sore throat, you go to the doctor. When your hair gets too long, you go to get it cut. When you need to reduce body fat, you . . . try to do it all on your own? That makes no sense. We all have our expertise and we rely on each other when in need. My expertise is fat loss. I’m passionate about helping all our clients get results, and our programmes have been proven effective. If you want to get in shape and are interested in one of our transformation programmes or would like to come along for a FREE trial, then go to www. almfitness.co.uk for more information. Alternatively call Amy on 07740 366419 or email amy@ almfitness.co.uk

5) Lift Weights You might consider this to be pretty obvious, but many people are still resistant to the idea that resistance training leads to fat loss. If you find yourself puzzled by the idea that lifting heavy things will reduce the layer of fat on your body, then allow me to explain. The act of lifting weights causes those targeted muscles to stimulate new muscle tissue growth. Now this doesn’t mean that your muscles are going to get noticeably larger (relax, ladies!) but it does mean that your muscle tissue will become tighter and more toned. The increase in The Link

The Trust wants bonfire night to be a safe night for all concerned – but especially hedgehogs. So it’s put together these top tips to help protect these prickly visitors:

Remember, Remember to

Help Hedgehogs this November!

W

ith fireworks night looming, Surrey Wildlife Trust is appealing to all bonfire builders to think about hibernating hedgehogs when constructing and lighting their wood piles. Unfortunately bonfire night coincides with the season when small mammals are looking for cosy places to hide, which can be disastrous for wildlife. “A stack of dry wood and leaves piled up for a bonfire might look to a

hedgehog like the perfect place to overwinter and sadly we fear many animals do perish in fires every year,” said Dawn Fielding, the Trust’s Wildlife Gardening Officer. “Gardeners love these adorable prickly creatures, as they eat bugs and slugs and are great for natural pest control. But hedgehogs are undergoing an unprecedented decline, with some experts recently warning of possible extinction within ten years! So it’s vitally important we all do what we can to protect them.”

• Consider piling material near the site of your fire and building your bonfire just before lighting. This will give small creatures less chance to move in. • Check your bonfire carefully before setting it on fire and remove any small inhabitants - rehome in a safe area away from dogs or cats, such as under a hedge or large bush and well away from your bonfire. • If you do have to build your bonfire beforehand, consider constructing a fence around it made of chicken wire, to help deter any mammals looking for a home. Hedgehogs were voted as the UK’s national species in 2013 but since the 1950s their numbers have seen a start-ling 95% decline. They’re disappearing from our landscape as fast as tigers are worldwide and there

are thought to be fewer than a million left in the UK. The declining quality of hedgerows, over-management of parks and the loss of gardens to paving and decking have been partly to blame for the hedgehog’s decline. The increased use of chemicals in gardening and farming means there are fewer insects, slugs and snails for hedgehogs to eat. Adult hedgehogs travel up to two kilometres a night hunting for food and they need to be able to move between gardens and green spaces. You can help them by cutting a hedgehog-sized hole in your garden fence. Or why not build your own hedgehog house out of a wooden box or pile of logs or sticks with some warm dry straw or leaves inside?

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Apple Time I

f you have an apple tree that has not been looked at for years, or one that has been pruned but you’re unsure what to do or how much to take off, here are some pruning techniques to point you in the right direction. Let’s start off with a tree that has not been pruned and look at ways to encourage better growth and increase yield. Apples trees that have not been touched for a long time suffer

34

from air not circulating around the tree. A good way to tell if this is the case is to stand by the trunk of the tree and look up. What you’re looking for is sky. Back when I was a student we were told if you can’t throw your hat up and out of the top of the tree then how was air going to move around. And up to a certain point this is right. Also you are looking to take out any inward pointing or crossing branches. Once this is done it

Pruning a branch to set fruit Leaf buds look small and pointed; blossom buds are bigger and more rounded. If you pinch out the end of a branch it will put on what are called water shoots (a very strong upright growth with just leaf buds). By cutting the water shoots off at this time of the year to 3 to 5 buds, next year they will turn into blossom buds. To keep this up the tree would need to be pruned every year. Setting a branch Once a second year branch gets fruit the weight of the fruit pulls the branch over and makes it set at that angle. It will then normally grow a water shoot off this bend. If the tree is too low to walk under or mow near, this joint is the best place to take the branch back and still keep the weeping effect of the tree. If your tree has had a damaged branch and is a little one-sided, take a water shoot in its first or second year and use string to pull

it over into the gap to create an umbrella shape. It will then set into this position. Things to be done in November in your garden ■■ With fruit trees put, grease bands around the trunk of your tree about two feet up. Follow the instructions on the box. Grease bands aim to stop the female codling moth laying its eggs near blossom before the fruit forms.

cover your compost, for example with a plastic sheet kept in place by something heavy like bricks. ■■ If the frost has not yet come this is a good time to jet wash patios and paths to help stop them getting slippery when wet. ■■ If you have any wooden garden furniture try and get it under cover to help protect it. ■■ If you are thinking about planting a hedge, now is the

time to do it as it is much cheaper to get what is called ‘Bare Root’ stock where hedging is grown in big numbers, and is lifted and not potted up. I would always recommend a bamboo cane and rabbit guard with each plant, even if you do not have a problem with rabbits, as the cane and guard will help support the plant during the winter from being flattened by strong winds or snow.

■■ Prune your roses and pick off this year’s leaves and burn them (do not compost them). I will cover more on this next month. ■■ Turn your compost over. The aim is to mix everything well to add moisture and air, both essential to speeding up the process. Try to move thick material, like roots, to the centre where it will break down quicker. Don’t forget to If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. Autumn ancestry... a time of colour and plenty

T

here is still a heady aroma of cider in the orchard as the last of the apples drop to the ground, there to be picked over by pheasants and blackbirds. The crop was heavy this year and there was no hope of using all the apples or the damsons, or even giving them away. With so much fallen fruit, walking in the orchard was a precarious business. I was in danger of sliding to the ground amongst the hornets and a hatch of very smart red admirals feasting on the fermenting pears. The hornets buzzed them continuously but I was never quite sure whether they were after the butterflies or the sugars from the fruit. Autumn is a wonderful time for foragers. Hedgerows are laden with fruit and berries. The wild damsons in my hedge have helped to keep up my five a day count for weeks. But the myrobalan plum has remained tantalisingly out of reach, frustrating as it makes the most wonderful jam. And any chance of me getting hazel The Link

nuts before the squirrels, is next to zero. Two puff balls (mushrooms) appeared on the back lawn along with a small forest of shaggy ink caps. A friend keeps pointing out the ones I can eat, but I’m afraid I’m still reticent about trying them. It is all too easy to get it wrong with grim consequences. One of the prettiest fungi - the red and white spotted fly agaric - is not all it seems; it causes hallucinations and has a substance in it which can make you very poorly indeed. I think I’ll stick to the mushrooms I buy. Responsible foraging is great fun but there are some rules to remember: never eat anything unless you are one hundred percent sure it is safe; always leave some behind for wildlife; minimise damage; do not pick anything rare or that is not abundant, always ask permission from the landowner, and finally, it is against the law to dig up any wild plant. Only take what you plan to eat.

Gardeners will be burning their fallen leaves and prunings now and others lighting bonfires on November 5th... please, look out for the hedgehogs that might be hibernating in them. Check your bonfires before lighting them, and should you find a prickly friend who has been munching through your slugs all year, find him somewhere cosy for the winter, and he will be there again next spring helping you win the war against those pesky molluscs. November sees the end of autumn, those wonderful colours of dying leaves as the chloroform fades from them . . . Article and photos by Geraldine Holbourn

Mixed Wine Matters A

s a convenience retailer, the Co-op is relied upon to provide food, beverages and household requirements at a moment's notice, whilst offering other services, too. For many, many years, the Co-op has satisfied millions and millions of delighted customers. Now, the Co-op is showing real commitment to being a leading retailer of beers, wines and spirits, several of which are award-winning. From Portugal Escudo Real Vinho Verde regularly pleases wine lovers. The white wine is great to drink on its own and to accompany many dishes, also. If al fresco dining is an option, this slightly sparkling production will not disappoint. Spain has many wines, too. I located MarquĂŠs de Valido Gran Reserva Rioja. This wine has a lot of devotees and, as a matured red from the region, is extremely popular for numerous dining occasions. Wonderful to accompany a good number of dishes, including Sunday roasts. France has been a favoured wine producer for centuries and I am very much impressed with the Les Launes Delas Crozes-Hermitage wine production. This is a regular choice for many, with dark fruits being very apparent on the nose, mouthfeel and palate. For Italy's wines I do like Chianti, and Villa Boscorotondo Chianti Classico Riserva impresses

me. This much loved wine adorns many dining tables and accompanies numerous dishes of cuisine superbly. Good for ageing. From Germany, for me, it has to be riesling. The Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Riesling Kabinett receives my vote. A most pleasant bouquet leads, enticingly, to the mouthfeel and palate sensations. Wonderful to pair with white meats, fish, seafood and many other dishes. Champagne is always a favourite to add that extra 'something' to a dining occasion or event. Les Pionniers Vintage Champagne is, I find, a most splendid blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grape varieties. On its own or to accompany cuisine, with its long finish, this is one for the 'top table'. As part of the membership promotion, customers can be rewarded for buying own label beers, wines and spirits. The Co-op is committed to supporting global communities via Fairtrade. These selections are just some of the many choices available. Please visit the website for all details. www.coop.co.uk As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

ovember is a month when most “berrying” plants are at their best. The temperatures outdoors are dipping quite rapidly and it is imperative therefore that we complete all the essential late autumn tasks without further delay. A checklist for November ▪▪ Protect plants of doubtful hardiness. Outdoor pots and baskets should be kept in a sunny, sheltered spot. Raise pots on bricks or pot-feet to aid drainage and insulate any that are not frost proof with bubble wrap. ▪▪ Check stored fruit, vegetable and flower tubers regularly and remove any showing signs of mildew or decay. ▪▪ Outdoor pipes and taps - lag or turn off their water supply from inside the house and then drain. Drain hose-pipes and store in a frost-free place. ▪▪ Berried holly – cut any you want for Christmas before the birds strip the berries, and keep in water in a cool place.

▪▪ Peruse seed catalogues and plan for the year ahead. ▪▪ Collect fallen leaves and convert into a soil conditioner. Exclude diseased material. Clear leaves from gutters, drain grills and fish ponds. ▪▪ Plant lily and tulip bulbs, hard deciduous climbers, hedges, shrubs and trees, roses and fruit trees, bushes and canes, in dry weather. ▪▪ Lay turf in dry weather. ▪▪ Cover ponds with netting and ensure that all tall plants are supported and tied in. ▪▪ Pot up hippeastrum (amaryllis). ▪▪ Plant garlic and autumn onion sets. ▪▪ Protect outdoor crops: • beetroot – cover with straw or soil; • brassicas – netting to deter pigeons; • cauliflower – peg or tie leaves over the developing curd. ▪▪ Carrots, parsnips, turnips and swede are unlikely to be affected by frosts but it is practical to cover the plants with straw. ▪▪ Sow broad beans in a sunny well-drained spot. Aquadulce Claudia is very hardy. Sow peas in an unheated greenhouse. ▪▪ Put up grease bands and trap winter moth around fruit trees.

▪▪ Clean greenhouses and frames, remove dead and dying leaves regularly and insulate. Practising good hygiene, all around now, should mean fewer disease problems next year. ▪▪ Autumn is the traditional time to add lime and manure but never at the same time. A month’s interval between the two is recommended.

Chocolate Fudge Brownies A rich chocolate flavour and slightly gooey texture combine for the perfect brownie. Make sure you use good quality dark chocolate - at least 70% cocoa solids. They'll keep fresh for 3 days - if you can resist them that long!

METHOD

INGREDIENTS

85g dark chocolate 100g butter, unsalted 125g caster sugar 100g muscovado sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 whole eggs plus 1 extra yolk, beaten together 100g plain flour 3 tablespoons cocoa powder

yy

Preheat the oven to 180°C/Gas Mark 4.

yy

Grease and line an 18cm square cake tin.

yy

Crumble the chocolate into a heat-proof bowl, add the butter, then rest the bowl over a pan of simmering water - don't let the water touch the base of the boil.

yy

Allow to melt, then set aside.

yy

When cool, stir the sugars and vanilla extract into the chocolate.

yy

Gently beat in the eggs and extra yolk, then sift in the flour and cocoa powder. Stir until well combined.

yy

Pour into the cake tin, and bake for 30 minutes.

yy

The mixture should be risen, but with a slightly soft centre, with moist crumbs sticking to a skewer placed into the middle.

yy

Leave to stand for 5 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack.

yy

When cool, remove the baking parchment, cut into 16 squares and serve.

Our Land Girls

T

he National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire has over 300 tributes and statues to commemorate service personal across the two world wars. My husband Michael, and I visited the Arboretum and were astonished by it's size, and how many different home front services were now honoured. At the end of our visit we were surprised when we came across a memorial to the Woman's Land Army. It was a striking statue with two Land Girls smiling bravely, and carrying farm implements. At their feet were several gruesome instruments, one of which was a gin trap, for catching rats. The Women's Land Army (WLA) was first established in World War 1, but was re-formed shortly before the outbreak of World War 2. At that time, Britain relied a great deal on food brought in from other countries, and it was thought that imports would be threatened by German blockades. In addition many male farm workers were expected to join up, leaving a shortage of farm labour. The Government was keen to increase food production, hence the Women's Land Army was again needed. There were two sections of the WLA: the Land Girls, who mainly did farm work, and the Timber Corps who tended the forests, keeping the home fires burning.. Initially Land Girls were paid a minimum wage of ÂŁ1.85 for a 50 hour week, but later this was increased to ÂŁ2.85. Through the war years there were more than 80,000 women working the land. My mother and her sister were Land Girls, and I can still remember running wild in the fields and watching them work. They had a large range of jobs, including milking cows with strange half covered buckets, and delivering the milk. They were also

54

expected to cope with handling heavy horses, driving tractors, muck spreading, taking care of the lambing, as well as all the poultry. There was also crop gathering, ditch digging, rat catching, roof thatching, bee keeping, and farm maintenance. They worked long hours, especially during the summer months, and these are the times I can remember the most; but they also worked in the cold, rain, and frost of the winter. What a life they had, but they were always cheerful. I can remember the badge my mother wore - it resembled a sheaf of wheat, as a symbol of their agricultural work. There was even an official magazine 'The Land Girls', and they also had their own special song: Back to the land we must all lend a hand, To the farms and the fields we must go. There's a job to be done, Though we can’t fire a gun, We can still do our bit with a hoe. At the end of the war the men were demobbed, and the farm hands returned to the cottage we lived in, so we had to leave, but I will never forget that time. I was so proud to see the tribute to the WLA at the National Memorial Arboretum. It is a special place of peace and remembrance, and for us to never forget all those who did their bit for our country. Entrance is free and if you would like to visit you can find details on their website; www.thenma.org.uk article and photos by Pamela Green

Fantastic Ile De Re I

f you look for tranquillity on your holidays, then you should visit Ile De Re, a beautiful island accessed via a bridge from Rochelle, France. My husband, Michael, and I visited the island in September last year, when many of the tourists had left. We were astounded with the beauty of the place and the peace and quiet. The leafy squares and narrow streets with white painted houses and green shuttered windows looked like a dream to us. That was until we tried to turn a sharp bend towing our large caravan. The residents looked on in amusement as they

58

watched my husband delicately, with skill and care, manoeuvre around the corner, missing their homes with inches to spare! Our campsite was great and that evening we sat outside listening to birdsong as we watched the sun go down. What more can you ask? The island is flat and with such narrow streets that most visitors hire bikes. There are many cycle paths, and these will take you among some beautiful sights. On the one side you will be amazed by the fields of golden corn, and vineyards, whilst on the other side there are golden beaches and the vast blue Atlantic Ocean, with shimmering yachts. But, if you get saddle sore you can use your car to explore – you just need to take it slowly.

During Roman times Ile De Re was an archipelago, consisting of three small islands. The space between was mainly taken up with the salt marshes. This area is called Loix, and is one of my favourite places. This peninsula inside the islands is wild and natural, and you can explore the diversity and originality of the islands natural heritage. Today the Government of Ile De Re, still encourage the historic salt production. We found the salt marshes very interesting. We sat for a long while watching and photographing the men working the salt pans, gathering salt in the old way, as they have done for centuries. You can purchase the tiny bags of salt in the tourist shops in Saint Martins Bay or any of the other small towns along the coast. The island has a thriving economy based on wine production, and fresh fruit and vegetables, which is run as a cooperative. On our visit to the winery, we tasted some delicious wines that are delicately blended with cognac. They say you have to visit the distillery to discover the secret Please mention The when responding to adverts Please mention The Caterham Link responding to of the mixing. Lee says "I wanted to visit the London Victoria Nova complex to see what all the fuss was about regarding the building architecture. I arrived late in the day and the light was fading. I was instantly drawn to the deep purple walls of Crosstown Doughnuts. The light was too low to take a normal photograph so I set the camera to a slow shutter speed and rotated the camera as I pressed the shutter. This photo is the result."

He told her that she was to do the dishes and house cleaning. It took a couple of days, but on the third day, he came home to see a clean house and dishes washed and put away. The second man married a girl from Thailand. He gave his wife instructions that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. The first day he didn't see any results, but the next day he saw it was better. By the third day, he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done, and there was a huge dinner on the table.

10. Richard Trevithick

Solution to Wordsearch:

The third man married a girl from South Africa. He ordered her to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. He said the first day he didn't see anything. The second day he didn't see anything either but by the third day, some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye and his arm was healed enough that he could fix himself a sandwich and load the dishwasher. He still has some difficulty when he pees. *****

Grandmas don't know everything . . . ! Little Tony was six years old, and he was staying with his grandmother for a few days.

Solution to Hidato:

He'd been playing outside with the other kids for a while when he came into the house and asked her, "Grandma, what's that called when two people sleep in the same room and one is on top of the other?" Grandma was a little taken aback, but she decided to tell him the truth, "It's called sexual intercourse, darling." Little Tony said, "Oh, OK," and went back outside to play with the other kids. A few minutes later he came back in and said crossly, "Grandma, it isn't called sexual intercourse - it's called Bunk Beds, and Jimmy's mum wants to talk to you!"
