As you know, recently there has been a growing amount of attention in the media about the over-use of plastics and the effect this is having on the environment. Following on from this, I have had a couple of enquiries from readers about whether or not this magazine, because of the glossy paper, is recyclable. So I decided to do a bit of research on this, and here is what I’ve discovered. The way paper manufacturers produce gloss paper is through a finishing process which involves polishing the paper – in much the same way as you would polish a piece of wood to achieve a smooth shiny surface. The laminated cover which we were using, and will be returning to later in the year, is also produced in much the same way. A heavier grade of paper is put through a more intensive finishing process, which produces the smooth, very high gloss end-product. I then looked at a number of websites – and checked with our printing company – and both the inner pages and the heavy duty cover are recyclable. The paper mills that waste paper goes to for recycling, put the paper through machines that are so efficient, that they can even remove staples and any other foreign objects that inadvertently find their way in with the paper.

Front Cover & Page 36 Mike Ambury

So, in a nutshell – our magazines are 100% recyclable, including the high gloss cover, which means that you can dispose of them in your recycle bin with a clear conscience. And here’s a titbit you might find interesting: a large percentage of magazines are recycled into newsprint, so the copy of The Link you read today, could well be the newspaper you read next month!

Healthy Minds T

here has been more and more in the news lately about mental health and it’s becoming apparent that it is important to look after our minds as well as our bodies. Mental Health Awareness week (14th to 20th May) gives us another opportunity to consider what mental health is all about, and what steps we can all take to improve and maintain our emotional wellbeing. Put simply, mental health is about the ways we think, feel and behave. Everyone feels down or worried from time to time, especially at times of change or stress such as the loss of a loved one, or relationship difficulties. Tips for maintaining good mental health: • Be physically active: exercise releases endorphins and has been shown to improve mood. If you’re able to get out and about, even a walk around the block can give you fresh air and a welcome change of scene. • Eat and sleep well: taking care over diet and getting sufficient rest will benefit you both

physically and mentally. Disturbances to eating and sleeping can be one of the first signs something is wrong.

safe, confidential space in which to discuss anything that is troubling you, without fear of judgement or unwanted advice.

• Talk about your feelings: keep in touch with friends and family, by telephone if you can’t see them in person. Loneliness is a key contributing factor to poor mental health.

Age UK Surrey offers a low-cost, one-to-one counselling service, available to people over 50 and their carers, living within Surrey and North East Hampshire. Sessions are an hour long and take place, usually weekly, either in your home or at a neutral location.

Difficulties with mental health can arise when feelings of low mood or stress start to interfere with your day to day life. If this happens to you, you are not alone: we know that 1 in 6 adults in the UK have a common mental health disorder, like depression or anxiety, at any one time. If you are concerned about your mental or emotional wellbeing, it is a good idea to: • Visit your GP, to rule out any physical causes • Consider counselling Counselling can take many forms, including one-to-one, group therapy, telephone or online. The relationship between client and counsellor focuses solely on the client’s needs. Counselling gives a

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Putting Climbers & Plants Together

A

lot of people decide to plant a rose e.g. a banksia which is a non-thorny rose, in an apple tree, or a Wisteria growing up into the canopy of a tree.

climbers and plants.

If your plant has got away and is taking over the tree, there are a number of things you can do. You can prune it back very hard. This has both advantages and disadvantages: it will stop your climber from flowering for a number of years, but it will also spur it on to grow lots of very strong shoots to grow through the canopy again. These will normally calm down after a couple of years and then flowering will begin again. These upright water shoots will then put on feathered sideways shoots which encourages the stems to lean over and set themselves into the weeping position. So, do not worry if they grow straight up because it does encourage them to weep over. Obviously thinning out helps both plants tremendously - it allows more light to get to both plants.

Most climbers are designed to grow up into the canopy to maximise the light and pollination but this doesn’t help the plant it grows up into. Most climbers will eventually kill the hosts they are These are great for a number of reasons, they provide extra colour using as support. My recommendation is to find a in your garden, for example: if Another thing people do, you have a cherry tree which climber that doesn’t swamp the especially with Ivy, is that they cut flowers in early spring, this can be plant it grows into, otherwise it the climber at the base to followed by the Wisteria flowers, will kill it. If you already have a and can look really good. There dead stump which you don’t know encourage more growth to go back up. and as evergreen as Ivy out of the canopy and just up the main stem is a good idea. If you have more than one tree with a climber growing up it you can rotate the growth. For example, Ivy - you can cut the Ivy off one tree in year one, and then off the second tree in year two, so on, and rotate round to ensure that you always have some climbers at maturity and you don’t have such a big job when they reach the canopy. The main thing you have really got to look out for is dead left in the tree. Roses are especially prone to this and it adds extra stress to the trees. The dead acts like a sail in the wind and also as a massive blanket in the snow adding extra weight and pulling down branches, so thinning out on a reasonably regular basis is what I would recommend.

around the tree to help it grow up, but remember to remove these once it is up into the tree because they are easily forgotten about and could possibly dig into the tree. Wisterias like to tangle themselves up into a tree so a single wire that’s hung from the tree and fastened into the ground with a tent peg is all that is needed, just to get it going, but again remember to remove it when the plant becomes strong enough. Choose a plant that flowers at a different time from its host, giving you a prolonged flowering time.

Supporting up into a tree Once you have bought your climber and you know that it won’t swamp the tree, you might need to help guide it to grow up the tree to start with. You can put chicken wire or some very lose strands of wire If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. Extremely relaxing experience 20

What is The Bowen Technique? The Bowen Technique is a very gentle form of bodywork, developed in the 1950s and 1960's by the late Tom Bowen. Bowen is an extremely versatile therapy with many procedures available that can be applied for different situations depending on the needs of the individual. For example, we may need to conduct the hamstring procedure in the first session or we may need to address your pelvic alignment depending on the problems you are experiencing. Ultimately the technique helps the body to balance and re-align itself on many levels; it is truly holistic in that we might be treating something very specific but this will also have an impact upon other difficulties that you are experiencing. The results experienced with Bowen are often remarkable, sometimes even after the first session. How Bowen Works

including fascia and skeleton. These moves work directly with the body's fascia and send signals via your nervous system which helps your body retrieve its memory of a relaxed and balanced state of being. The effect of Bowen on fascia is significant and recent studies concerning fascia may help to explain why the technique is so effective. More research is being conducted and it is an area that is covered in many of the Bowtech CPD courses. What to expect in a treatment session Therapy sessions are very gentle and non-invasive. Bowen moves are made over specific points on the body either on the skin or through light clothing. Treatment is suitable for all age groups and indeed many pregnant women have benefited from Bowen. A therapy session usually lasts from 40 minutes to 1 hour. People generally find Bowen an extremely relaxing experience

In a Bowen session we apply light moves to specific places on the body either on the skin or through light clothing. Moves are made on skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves. A Bowen treatment will also address deeper levels of the body, To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

Caterham Oxted & Godstone Lions Club District 105SE England Celebrating 100 years of Lions serving their communities

both Caterham and Oxted who kindly donated 50 Easter Eggs between them to be given out at St Catherine’s Hospice. The eggs were given to patients and to those who have home visits. They were presented to the Hospice by Lion Tony Carter.

T

he Club was very pleased with the Easter Egg raffles that were held in local pubs in the area. It is the first time that the Club decided to give it a try and as it proved popular it is likely that it will be done again next year. The Club would like to thank all those publicans who kindly agreed to have the raffle in their pubs. As always, the money collected will go towards to local good causes. The Club is also very grateful to Morrison’s stores of

The Club’s annual fundraising concert was held at Caterham School and this year featured Vocal Dimension. Established in 2010 it has become a multi award winning group of thirty lady singers who sing in a four-part style which is one of the most challenging and rewarding styles for a vocal ensemble. Unusually there is no musical accompaniment. Choosing Vocal Dimension was a change for the Club who in past years have favoured tribute bands and proved successful as the number of supporters showed.

Caterham School very generously gives use of the theatre to the Club and gives support with lighting and the sound system. The Club’s mini bus runs a shuttle from the car park to the theatre entrance; this proves popular with those who might struggle to walk up the hill to the entrance. The next fundraising event is on 12th May when our annual Swimathon event will take place at De Stafford School in Burntwood Lane Caterham. All those who would like to raise money for a charity or good cause close to the heart and at the same time help the local community might like to take part in the Swimathon. Up to five colleagues can swim for 25 minutes in a relay. COGS organises everything and those taking part can just turn up having arranged sponsorship by relatives or friends. All that COGS ask is that you donate 50% of your total sponsorship to the Lions, which helps us support local causes and charities. Those interested in taking part and raising money should contact Lion President Ian Macaulay on 0208 6683280.

Bob says of his image “Hands that once knitted”: "Hands have always fascinated me: those touchy, feely things, the primary instruments we have to interrogate the physical world around us and to make tentative, first-flesh contact between our human selves, offering them up outstretched to shake. We even adorn them in overt demonstration of key events and lifelong loves. Little wonder then they so faithfully reflect a lifetime’s history. My Mother’s hands swollen, worn and stiff from years of industry and tenderness alike, endured as proud emblems of all her deeds past … yes, even her knitting. "

Make Way for a Wild May!

W

hy not tune into the special sound of one of Surrey’s most iconic birds, the Dartford warbler, as we celebrate International Dawn Chorus Day on Sunday 6th May? The county’s swathes of rare lowland heath are perfect habitat for this jaunty bird. On warm days in spring and early summer, you may be lucky enough to see one perched on top of a gorse bush, warbling its rattling, scratchy song.

28

The Dartford warbler is a small, very active bird, with a long grey tail which it often holds at an angle. Its rust-coloured breast and bright orange eye are striking, as it flits across the heath, before diving into the shelter of the deep heather. Although some birds over-winter in north-west Africa, almost the entire world population of Dartford warblers breed in southern Britain, France, Spain, Portugal and southern Italy. The British sub-species is restricted to

A species with a limited geographical range that is restricted to a single habitat is very vulnerable to environmental changes and numbers can be seriously reduced by harsh weather. After the very cold winter of 1962-3 only 11 pairs of Dartford warblers survived in Britain! Fortunately mild winters and suitable nesting habitat mean numbers have slowly recovered. Today there are thought to be approximately 3200 pairs and the population is steadily increasing and their range expanding though they are still regarded as an Amber List species. And they are heavily dependent on the availability of heathland for survival. Our heaths are a globally rare and threatened habitat and during the last 200 years, vast areas have been lost to intensive agriculture, forestry, housing, roads and other developments. breeding birds and as Dartford warblers nest close to the ground, they are particularly vulnerable to disturbance by boisterous dogs. Most areas that Dartford warblers breed in are now protected under UK and European law. Conservation bodies like Surrey Wildlife Trust are also working to save our heaths by managing scrub, carrying out fire prevention works and bringing back management techniques that have sustained our heaths since the Bronze Age. You can play your part by avoiding areas of deep heather during nesting season and keeping dogs under control. Open Saturday mornings 9.30am to 12 noon Located in the shed on the allotments behind Avenue Road, Caterham Hill

W

ith the weather warming up, it is the ideal time to put into action all your designs and plans for the garden! You can propagate cuttings, sow seeds of biennials and do some pruning. WATCH OUT FOR LATE FROSTS!!! I am also listing below some of the other priority jobs that need to be undertaken:

Bulbs • Lift Lily bulbs from the garden and transfer them to tubs for summer decoration. Do not damage the roots and stand the tubs in the shade for a couple of weeks until they recover. Do not let them dry out.

• Take cuttings of Fuchsia, Lemon Verbena, Sage & Pelargoniums. • Trim overgrown trailing/spreading plants e.g. Clematis • Cut back Spring flowering plants, after flowering • Progressive Sweet Peas and climbers should be attached to plant-support rings. • Stake tall herbaceous plants like Delphiniums, Peonies and Phlox. • Remove faded Rhododendron flower trusses.

• Gladiolus foliage will be sprouting, so mulch around after weeding.

Fruit • Netting & straw will protect Strawberries and soft-fruited bushes.

• Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of Spring flowering bulbs.

• Check for Sawfly Caterpillars on Gooseberry bushes.

• An application of bonemeal adds energy and colour to Irises.

• Copious watering for newly planted fruit bushes is necessary.

Flowers • Once your soil has been nourished and prepared, nearly all hardy annual flower seeds could be sown in-situ.

Greenhouse/ Houseplants • Ventilation is needed in hot, dry weather.

• Half-hardy, tender seedlings, should be hardened off and trans-ferred towards the end of May.

• Harden-off half-hardy bedding plants.

• Divide hardy annuals, Hostas, Asters and Chrysanthemums.

• The May sun can scorch house-plants, so move them away from south facing windows.

• Pinching the tips of Chrysanthemums will produce bushier plants.

Hedges & Lawns • Hedges need their first clipping, but make sure there are no bird nests.

• Trim Aubretia, Alyssum and Candytuft to encourage new growth & cut out old shoots of Penstemon. • Dead-head Lavendar, Pansies, Primula & Viola to produce new blooms.

32

• Damp down floors to increase humidity & deter Red Spider Mite. • Hang fly-traps.

• Overhead spraying and mulching evergreens and conifers is helpful during dry spells. • Regular mowing is essential for newly=laid lawns ( blades on a high setting ).

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk photo courtesy of Linda Pitkin

• Use a weedkiller on established lawns. • A high-nitrogen fertilizer will stimulate growth. Patios, Balconies, Roof gardens & Window boxes • Fill window boxes and ensure that all plants receive sufficient watering during dry spells, with a balanced liquid feed. • Top dress permanent pot plants. • Plant up pots & baskets of summer bedding after hardening off. Roses • Eliminate multiple shoots. • Tie in climbing & rambling roses. • Treat any signs of Blackspot on Roses with a systemic fungicide Vegetables • Plant Asparagus and seed Potatoes ( earth up if frost is forecast) • Harvest established Asparagus & Rhubarb (a well rotted compost for Rhubarb). • Plant out Brassicas and Leeks.

NEWS 5th May 2018 - Plant Sale at the Trading Hut 9.30am to 12 noon. Donations of Plants from Members would be greatly appreciated Trading Hut We stock multi-purpose compost, John Innes Nos: 1, 2, 3 and seed compost, a wide range of fertilizers, vegetable seeds, 7’ & 8’ canes, netting, insecticides, fungicides, bird feed, grass seed, lawn feed and weed, nutrients for special plants and a host of other items for our members. Looking after older pets article by Hannah Holland RVN

This month, Head Nurse, Hannah Holland, gives advice on caring for older pets.

L

ike people, pets are living longer nowadays. If you have an older pet, it is important to be aware that they will experience many of the same illnesses, aches and pains as we do when we get older. The big difference is they will not always show it. Animals are great at hiding their illnesses and will not always vocalise pain, so it is up to us as pet owners to know our pets and to observe any subtle changes. If you have an elderly pet, ask yourself whether or not your pet is: • Less keen to go for a walk or slower on a walk? • Struggling with stairs and steps? • Less excitable then they used to be – especially when greeting you? • Showing changes or unusual toileting habits? • Limping, favouring a leg, or intermittently holding a leg up? • Stiff, finding it harder to get up out of bed, unsteady on their feet, slower to get moving, or change in gait? • Less keen to jump on people’s laps or furniture? • Licking an area on their body, such as legs or feet? (This is particularly important as it can be a sign of pain.) • Eating more or less than you would expect? • Drinking more? The Link

• Losing weight? • Grooming less? (For example, you may have noticed your pet has matted hair) • Less sociable, irritable or has become aggressive to people or other animals? All of these changes can be signs that your pet has an illness, or may indicate your pet is in discomfort or pain. Illness is much more common in older animals than young animals. Here are some of the most common problems experienced by older cats and dogs: Dental pain: Imagine not brushing your teeth for 10 years; you will definitely end up with decaying teeth and sore gums. Do bear this in mind with your pets – having rotten teeth is very painful and animals will still eat even with a very sore mouth. You may notice them dribbling, not wanting to eat biscuits or dropping food from their mouth. Over-active thyroid (cats): Signs include eating a lot, but still losing weight. They can also seem agitated and twitchy. Kidney problems or diabetes: Signs include increased drinking, weight loss, toileting in the house, and unusually smelly breath. Heart conditions: Signs include your pet finding

exercise more difficult, coughing, panting, changes in breathing, and weight loss. Cancers: A swollen tummy, lumps or bumps on the body, persistent diarrhoea, and sudden changes in weight. Animals are often very stoic and don’t make a fuss. We, as owners, will sometimes make excuses and put things down to their pet ‘getting old’, when actually many of these things can be treated and should be treated. It is advisable to get your pet checked every 6 months by a vet, so that they can listen to their heart, weigh them and check for any abnormalities. This will ensure your pet is healthier and happier for longer. At the end of the day, it all comes down to your pet’s quality of life. This can often be significantly improved by appropriate treatment of many of these illnesses. If you have any concerns about your pet’s heath or welfare, contact your veterinary clinic for advice from a vet or nurse.

It's a

From colourful pompoms decorating trees to handprints left across walls and a piano that Elton John would be proud of, it's been a hectic month for Caterham Valley For You manager Sue McGeown and her team

celebration!

W

hile the grey and dreary start to 2018 may have continued its monotonous march through spring, Colour Caterham finally arrived to lift spirits in Caterham Valley. Late one evening, in pouring rain, a committed collective of guerilla knitters took to the streets to dress trees, safety barriers and the town's Rotary Clock with colourful garments for the first weeks of April. Organised by Caterham Valley For You, this initiative also saw children from local schools taking part in a colouring competition. We were so impressed by not only the quality of the work but the quantity, with more than 350 vibrant entries submitted. All the artworks were judged by Jodie Green and June Allen at Caterham Galleries and, after much deliberation, Finley Drayton, age 11, from Audley Primary School and Harry Lyles-Clarke, age six, from Essendene Lodge School were picked as the overall winners. Their artworks were framed and displayed in the gallery window throughout Colour Caterham. Images by 27 of the runners-up were also displayed around town, with Caterham Valley Library, JJ Browne & Son ( Jewellers) Ltd, Cubitt & West, Choices Estate Agents, Rayners Town &

Country, Park & Bailey, Martin & Co, Hamptons International and Bairstow Eves transforming into pop-up galleries for the occasion. Not to be outdone, schools also created giant artworks – with the largest by St John's Church of England Primary School stretching across a significant portion of the magnificent Magnet Kitchens showroom window. Nails & Spa, Craft Stationers, Edi's Barbershop, Caterham Valley Computers, Cubitt & West, Vitaleyes, Costa Coffee and Louisa Graham Kitchens also lent their windows for the occasion. We predicted it would be a sight for sore eyes, and with everything in place it truly was. With help from local artist Avril Jones, Caterham Rotary chairman Andy Parr joined in the fun by transforming a piano with psychedelic Colour Caterham regalia. Placed in Church Walk Shopping Centre, anyone who fancied tickling the ivories was able to knock out a tune during the Easter holidays. Back at Caterham Galleries, we invited the community to add their stamp to proceedings by placing painted handprints onto the shop's previously plain white external wall. While we met lots of youngsters and their families during the event, this was an activity for all ages and 84-year-old Evanda Richardson, who

told us she had been living in Caterham for 79 years, couldn't resist joining in too. While Colour Caterham will have physically faded away once you read these pages, the celebrations continue this month with a certain Royal Wedding set to capture international imaginations. If you're planning your own nuptials, Caterham Valley has the expertise to make the day extra special. While we've spoken about our many fantastic jewellers and hair and beauty salons before, did you know that we have not one but two go-to wedding destinations? Namely, Helena Fortley bridal boutique and The Wedding Lookbook. At Helena Fortley, it's all about the dresses and they've got some stunning designs that are sure to catch your (or Meghan's!) eye. Keep an eye out for their hugely popular events with handpicked designers. From dresses to venues, The Wedding Lookbook are able to put together one-stop shop packages to take away some of the trepidation and stress for couples organising their big day. If they can't help you with it, it's probably not worth worrying about anyway.

Despite the bleak weather, Church Walk resembled a street party on Easter Saturday The Link

We shouldn't forget Caterham Photography either, as they are experts at making sure the emotions of the occasion are captured perfectly for your family photo albums. Whatever you're looking forward to this month, we hope you have a brilliant one and visit us soon in Caterham Valley.

The next morning when my husband asked me what time I got in, I told him 'midnight'. He didn't seem angry in the least. Whew, I got away with that one! Then he said 'We need a new cuckoo clock.' When I asked him why, he said, 'Well, last night our clock cuckooed three times, then said 'oh bugger.' Cuckooed four more times, cleared its throat, cuckooed another three times, giggled, cuckooed twice more, and then tripped over the coffee table and f*rted. ‘
