Crofton Beam Engines O

stoked Lancashire boilers in operation, 6 and 4 tonne oscillating beams and tonnes of water cascading into the canal leat.

The Crofton Beam Engines were built 200 years ago to pump water up hill to the highest point of the Kennet & Avon canal. Being still in working condition, they represent an installation which has major international significance for industrial archaeology. They illustrate directly the development of motive power and canal transport, both important elements of the industrial revolution which laid the foundation stone of the developed world we know today.

The Beam Engines can be run on steam to special order. If you have an event you would like to celebrate, or a group of people who would like a unique experience, please visit the website www. croftonbeamengines.org, where you will find a list of special events through 2018, opening times, prices, and lots of useful information. Much of the Crofton site, including the Engineman’s Rest Cafe, has easy access on compacted cinder pathways. The canal and engine house have steps, which are not readily accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. A standard ticket on steaming days allows you unlimited entry to the pumping station, for 12 months. Accompanied children under 16 are always free. It’ really is a family day out that's too good to miss!

n a recent visit to Wiltshire, my husband Michael and I visited the site of the Crofton Beam Engines. These are the world's oldest Beam Engines, still able to perform the job for which they were built. We were amazed at their history, and that they were still in working order.

A team of dedicated volunteers look after the site for future generations to see how our great pioneering engineers tackled early developments in motive power and pumping technology. When we visited the site, we saw why Crofton is regarded as such a gem in the heritage of UK engineering. In recognition of their historical significance, the two engines (one of which is of original Boulton & Watt construction), plus the engine house, all have Grade 1 Listed status. In keeping with that status, the volunteers try hard to retain the pumping station and the appearance of the engines in the condition that existed when they were first put into use. The engines still keep the canal full when in steam, so they are maintaining a living installation rather than a museum. One of the most popular times to visit is on a steaming day; this is usually on weekends, and a great opportunity to see the boilers in action. The place really comes to life with the handThe Link

On to this month’s magazine. On page 3, we have a new advertiser – Old Style Dating – who offer exactly what is says on the tin, so if you are looking for a long-term relationship, have a look at their website for more details. Next, St Catherine’s Hospice are once again holding their midnight fund-raiser walk on Saturday 9th June, so start talking to your friends and family, and get your team together for this worthwhile event. Another very worthwhile cause is the Diana Francis House. Have a look at their article on page 21 to see if you can help in any way. As I mentioned last month, this year Easter Sunday and April Fool’s Day are on the same day – the first time since 1956 – so watch out for those Easter Eggs! And if you have a special Easter event, or perhaps a range of Easter eggs or chocolates you’d like to promote, give me a call on 01684 833715 or email me the details to info@grapevinepublications.co.uk – the deadline for the April magazine is 8th March. Till next month, keep happy and healthy.

March of course means daffodils, mad hares and Mother’s Day, so husbands and kids, don’t forget: Sunday 11th March – flowers, chocolates and breakfast in bed for Mum! And I’m sure she’d love a nice lunch out somewhere special – perhaps try Trevor Langley’s recommendation in his article on page 45.

Go the extra mile for St Catherine's Hospice Midnight Walk

S

t Catherine's Hospice Midnight Walk is back! With brand new walking routes, it’s the ideal chance to make your steps count while raising funds for your local hospice. Taking place in Horsham on Saturday 9th June, the walk, sponsored by Gatwick Airport, is open to everyone aged 10 and over and offers a choice of 7, 13 or 20 miles. It starts at 8pm or 10pm depending on your chosen distance. Wendy Buckingham, 44, from Surrey has already signed up. Last year she took part for the first time with a team of 12 family and friends. Wendy said: "We walked in memory of my husband Ken who St Catherine’s cared for. The best part was the camaraderie and the volunteer marshals were amazing, they kept us going. There’s a fantastic atmosphere and the night feels really special. Walking together

8

as a family and having my girls take part for their Daddy was amazing. We can’t wait to do it all again this year!” Nearly 1,000 people walked through Horsham in a spectacular sea of orange last year but St Catherine’s is hoping even more of you will pull on your walking shoes in 2018. The hospice is hoping to raise £125,000 to help them provide care and support to local terminally ill people when it’s needed most. People like Donald, who St Catherine’s Therapies Team arranged a walker for, so he could go into town and buy his wife a surprise bouquet of flowers. Louise Brown, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s said: “Signing up for

our Midnight Walk is something to be proud of. Your support is vital in helping us be there for everyone who needs us, so we hope lots of you will join us in June and help make this year’s Midnight Walk a night to remember.” It doesn’t matter whether you’re walking for the first time, a personal challenge or in memory of someone you love. It just matters that you walk. Now’s the chance to make your steps count – will you take it? Ready to join this inspiring night? Sign up online at: www.stch.org.uk/ midnightwalk or call St Catherine's Events Team on 01293 447355. Make sure you sign up by 20 April to receive a special early bird entry rate of £10. After 20 April, it'll cost £15 to take part. All entry fees include a free T-shirt, finisher's breakfast and medal.

By releasing some of the equity tied up in your home you could have a tax free lump sum to supplement your retirement income and use as you please. These funds could be used to pay off an existing mortgage, to going on that holiday you’ve always dreamed of, even helping your children or grandchildren take their first steps onto the property ladder. It’s not what you release, it’s what you realise.

These are lifetime mortgages and home reversion plans. To understand their features and risks, ask for a personalised illustration. There will be a fee for mortgage advice. This will depend upon your circumstances, but we estimate that it will be £995. Equity Release Supermarket Ltd is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. I

t is the start of the busy eight monthly growing season. The days gradually lengthen, light improves and tender shoots appear. But there is no guarantee temperatures will remain constant. Frosty nights could cause untold damage. Glass, fleece and plastic covers should be at the ready! The soil where flower and vegetable plants are to be inserted should be improved and warmed up. All pots, trays and containers used for seed germination should be cleaned and disinfected. However, some gardeners prefer to order plug plants to save time and energy. March is the popular time for flower and vegetable seed sowings, weather permitting • Hardy annuals like anchusa, calendula, clarkia, larkspur and nigella (in situ), ageratum, alyssum, aster, cosmia, gazania, impatiens, lobelia, marigold, nemesia and petunia under cover. • Artichoke, beetroot, broad beans, brussels sprouts, cabbage, calabrese, carrot, cauliflower, lettuce, parsley, parsnip, peas, radish, spinach, spring onions and turnips under plastic/gall. • Aubergine, cucumber, melon, pepper and tomato in a heated greenhouse.

14

• Still time to sow begonias, gazenias, verbena and pelargonium in a greenhouse. • You could also start off celery, celeriac, French and dwarf and runner beans in a greenhouse. • All plants should be protected. Successful sowings should be hardened off before transplanting. Slugs and snails should not be allowed to damage seedlings. Bulbs Lift and divide clumps of snowdrops. Plant gladioli corms and hardy oxalis. Anemone and lilies can be planted. Fruit A final chance to plant fruit bushes. Refirm soil around earlier plantings, secure ties and mulch. Hedges Protect young hedges on exposed sites with a mulch. Plant evergreen/ deciduous hedges. Herbaceous Plants Plant hardy perennials to your choice of colour. Lift and divide clumps of well-established perennials. Cut back cornus (dogwood) and salix (willow). Houseplants Inspect pots and transfer to one size larger, if need be. Water cactus copiously and transfer, if root-bound. Clean shiny-leaved plants with a damp cloth; hairy and spiny ones with a brush.

Lawns Sweep, lightly roll and rake the lawn before mowing, on a dry day. Prepare the ground for a new lawn, either seed-sowing or turfing. Rock gardens Replace winter casualties and plant out new specimens. Grit and compost will improve drainage. Roses Complete planting bushes. Prune established roses, according to the variety. Cut out dead wood. Trees and shrubs Plant new perennials, shrubs and trees, and position them to your taste. Prune mahonia and late flowering, eg buddleia and caryopteris. Syringe camellias with water, after frost damage. Vegetables Chit early and main crop varieties of potatoes. Plant onions and shallots. Cover rhubarb with buckets and exclude light. Divide established clumps of chives. Water gardens Clear all debris on the surface and start feeding fish. Remove pond heaters and start the fountain. Wild life Clean out and repair nesting boxes, for spring broods. Fix new nesting boxes on the north side of trees.

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

In General Hoe and control weeds and protect tender shoots from slugs and snails. Top dress plant containers with fresh compost. Put supports in place now for sweet peas, floppy annuals and multi-stemmed perennials. Birch twigs are ideal. News David Gold, local philanthropist and co-chairman and co-owner of West Ham United Football Club, and Chairman of Gold International, is opening his garden again this year for charity. The garden will be open from 11am to 4.30pm on the 1st and 8th April. We are delighted that Mr Gold has invited the Caterham Horticultural Society to put on a special seasonal display. Please do come along to enjoy Mr Gold’s beautiful garden and support charity, and at the same time you can meet us and find out more about the Society and what we do.

Spring Show Saturday 14th April Hillcroft School, Chaldon Road Open to the public at 2.30, teas and coffee, raffle. Details about the various classes for entry are in the 2018 schedule which is being distributed shortly; more information is on our website and facebook. We have already had enquiries about the children’s categories, so here is some advance information: the theme for the displays of flowers and/or handicrafts by a school class or youth organisation is 'Faeries and elves' to be staged on a table 4 feet by 2 feet (table supplied). It must be the children's own work. Contact Janet Manning, Show Secretary by 8pm on Friday 30 March if you would like to enter a table exhibit; or for more advice on entering our shows at j. manning@waitrose.com.

Trading Hut Located in the shed on the allotments behind Avenue Road, Caterham Hill. Open Saturday mornings 9.30am to 12 noon. We have a wide variety of vegetable seeds, supplied by two reputable firms: Onions and shallots – a limited stock has been ordered for our members. Potatoes – we have eight popular varieties. Fertilizers – members can choose from a wide range, either in small or big quantities. Netting – netting can be used for various purposes and is selling at unbeatable prices. Team members are at hand to help with solving any gardening problems. pictured below from last Spring's Show is the amazing “Nessie” exhibit by 9th Caterham Guides

Thought for the Day: Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything, but they bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs . *****

Its a real worry . . . !! Two young lads were walking along the road. One of the lads turned to his friend and says "I'm so worried about my father - he slaves away all day to earn money to pay for my education, to put a roof over my head, food on the table and give me pocket money. I'm also worried about my mother who also slaves away all day cleaning the house, doing the laundry and the ironing and the cooking" His friend asks him "Sounds good to me. What are you so worried about?" The first lad replies "How do I stop my slaves from running away?"

Learning to Live Independently

D

iana Francis House has been forced to make some changes to its criteria because Surrey County Council (SCC) have stopped Housing Support for people with a physical impairment and learning difficulty. This decision effectively means that all of our tenants could be made homeless in April 2018 unless they can meet the assessment needs, laid down by SCC, which is concerning as the assessments do not start until this year. Our tenants will be assessed as to their needs which will enable them to live independently in the community. A positive outcome will mean that tenants going through our house will avoid the chaotic tenancy situation, where they are continuously made homeless because they unable to manage their rents, care packages and

The Link

other living skills required to keep them safe yet independent. Unfortunately, we believe, due to the decision of SCC, this will cost the statutory authorities a lot more per tenant in the long term. A negative outcome will mean tenants being forced to move on to potentially very unsuitable accommodation. However, we are determined that our current and future tenants will have the opportunity to learn how to care for themselves, manage a care package, manage their finances and day to day budgets. To this end we are looking for some financial support to ensure that our Housing Support Officers can continue to provide these skills and opportunities to people in need. The amount needed is ÂŁ37,000 per annum to ensure our service can remain operational. We have also increased the age

range of our target group from 18 to 45, to 18 to 55, which will enable us to help and support slightly older people as they begin to move away from their family home. Last, and by no means least, we would like to recognise and give thanks to Martin Gill, one of our very valuable, knowledgeable and positive Trustees, who sadly passed away suddenly. Martin was very keen to expand our group of Trustees with people who could make a positive contribution to the way our very small charity progressed. To this end we would like to ask if anyone out there would like to join us (particularly if you have skills in the world of finance), to please contact us at: Diane Francis House tel: 01883 337218 email ihotdfh@yahoo.co.uk www.ihot.btik.com

A Spring in Our Step From light-hearted pancake challenges to secret plans to make the town bloom this Easter, it’s been a busy few weeks for Caterham Valley For You manager Sue McGeown

I

f your garden is anything like mine, you'll have been seeing the first signs of spring for some time now despite the British climate's best efforts to sling us back into winter every other day. At Caterham Valley For You, we've certainly launched into 2018 with a spring in our step – and we're determined to put a few more smiles on people's faces this year. For instance, shopkeepers, business owners and even residents walking their dogs through the streets spent part of February participating in a little light-hearted pancake challenge fun (you can see the videos on our Facebook page). The brave guinea pigs for the very first Caterham Valley Pancake Challenge nominated themselves and represented local businesses, including Jade Insurance Consultants Ltd, Huntley Cartwright Chartered Quantity Surveyors, Soper Hall, David Rae Salons, Sweet & Savoury Waffles, Caffe Bambino, Select Art Interiors and Waitrose Caterham. Man about town, Andy Parr MBE, took on the challenge with gusto as Soper Hall's representative and hit the heights with 18 flips in 10 seconds. He was joined at the top of the charts by Majid Pur at Caffe Bambino, as things got even more competitive than we expected. Whether a flip off at dawn needs to be arranged to find an overall champion remains to be decided. While no Guinness World Records were broken, there were plenty of laughs along the way and the initiative was just a teaser for the year ahead. We even collected some alternative pancake recipe

22

ideas at caterhamvalley.co.uk – pancakes aren't just for Shrove Tuesday, after all, and you can travel the world with our suggestions thanks to Caterham Valley's cafés and restaurants. Our next initiative, Colour Caterham, is now just around the corner. While the specific details are a closely guarded secret at this point (and all will become clear why in due course!), it's a case of watch this space as our plans unravel into public view during the Easter school holidays. As spring continues to raise its tentative head, we're aiming to launch Caterham Valley out of the winter gloom by helping the town to bloom, and we'll be bringing a splash of vibrant colour to the area while we're doing it. Let's just say that you can certainly expect the unexpected - and we'd love for you to get involved. So, if you're an aspiring knitter or crafter (have I said too much?!) or a school, club or society looking for a colourful and uplifting project to try your hand at, get in touch with me by e-mailing sue@caterhambid.co.uk as soon as possible. Wishing you a bright and colourful start to spring in Caterham,

Sue For more news and updates from Caterham Valley For You, you can follow them on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram

Red Deer - photo courtesy of Jon Hawkins

without realising - their common name is the ‘barking deer’ from the repeated, loud bark they make, even when undisturbed.

On the Trail of the Mysterious Muntjac

H

ave you seen any deer lately, on the road or from the train, on the woodland fringes or even in the open - especially first thing in the morning or near dusk? Deer are our largest wild mammals and a real pleasure to see and there are more deer in the UK now than at any time in the past 500 years. This is largely due to a lack of predators (except man) and improving habitat and food supplies. While you might glimpse a fallow or even a red deer, the deer most

26

commonly seen in the wild in Surrey are roe deer. This elegant native species has been present in Britain since at least the stone age. Roe were extinct by 1700 in southern and central England and Wales, probably due to over-hunting. But they were re-introduced and numbers have now topped 600,000 in Britain. Unlike the native roe, muntjac deer are spreading rapidly into Surrey and in future, we may see more muntjac and fewer roe deer. If you haven’t seen one, you may have heard one

Muntjac is an introduced species. Both the larger ‘Indian’ and the smaller ‘Reeves’ muntjac (from China) were brought to Woburn Park, Bedfordshire in about 1900. The Indian muntjac was eliminated but escapees survived until 1925. However, escaped Reeves muntjac flourished and are now widespread in the midlands, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and now Surrey. Owing to their subtropical origin in southern China, the muntjac breed all year round, despite our harsher climate, and can produce a fawn every 7-8 months - unlike roe and other UK deer species that are seasonal breeders. Muntjac are small and stocky with hindquarters appearing to be higher than the withers, giving a hunched appearance. Their summer russet brown coat changes to grey brown in winter and they have distinct black lines on their faces.

Events at Surrey Wildlife Trust

March Events Workshop: Log Mosaic Saturday 3rd March 10am - 3pm Create a beautiful mosaic that will add colour and texture to any garden or outside space, using wood cut from woodland trees as your base. Muntjac Deer - photo courtesy of Amy Lewis

Considerably shorter than roe, muntjac have a tail that is white on the underside - frequently held erect and the only point seen if disturbed! Roe have no visible tail, instead showing a white rump patch that varies in shape between males and females. Muntjac bucks (males) may also have short antlers of up to 10 cm and protruding upper canine teeth. These timid small deer are very hard to find, despite them being present in many of the woodlands in Surrey. They thrive in close cover, thick hedges and dense woodland and they flee at the slightest disturbance. But they will venture out into open ground if undisturbed. If you walk through the woods slowly and quietly, or sit somewhere with a view of an open grass field in the early evening, you may be lucky enough to spot one. Deer will scent you from over half a mile away given the right conditions, so be aware of the wind direction. A good pair of binoculars that work well in low light will also help you to spot this striking and elusive animal.

Workshop: Willow Basket Making Tuesday 6th March 10am - 3pm Weave your very own willow basket - perfect for collecting berries, eggs or displaying fruit. Suitable for beginners with some manual dexterity and patience! Tim says "This is one of many images created by dropping objects into a jug of water to get interesting patterns. Using a table, backboards, flashes and a willing assistant to drop the objects it took a few attempts to achieve the desired effect. It's great (if somewhat messy) fun, why not give it a try? Vary the shutter speed until you get the desired result."

Update on Alabama Rot article by Ian Mathers BVMS (Hons) MRCVS

O

ver the last few years, increasing numbers of people have been asking me about Alabama Rot, more correctly called Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy (CRGV), a disease of dogs which damages the blood vessels of the skin and kidneys. The cause of the disease isn’t known, although it is possible that it is caused by bacterial toxins. Initial symptoms are usually redness, ulceration or swelling of the extremities. As the disease progresses, other symptoms can include lethargy, vomiting and fever. Sadly, if the kidneys are affected, the mortality rate can be as high as 85%.

CRGV, and more likely to be some other form of skin disease such as an infection, or allergic skin disease. In any case, veterinary attention should be sought. Finally, CRGV does not affect humans. My take on it is this: there is little point in worrying about CRGV because at present there is no

proven method of prevention, and no known cure, with treatment having a poor success rate (although some dogs have made a recovery). Far better to protect your dog against comparatively common, potentially fatal, and totally preventable diseases, by ensuring it is fully vaccinated, and given a monthly treatment to prevent lungworm.

CRGV is more common during the cold, wet months of the year. The first thing I’d like to stress is that CRGV is a rare condition; since it was first detected in the UK in 2012, there have only been 122 confirmed cases (that’s less than 25 cases per year spread over the entire country, with the highest number of cases in Greater Manchester, Dorset and Hampshire). Secondly, if your dog develops red or inflamed feet, it is extremely unlikely to be The Link

DINE IN STYLE: Searcys St Pancras Restaurant

S

t Pancras International is an iconic venue. ‘Meet me at the Champagne Bar at St Pancras’, certainly says, “I have arrived!” This is where Eurostar trains arrive and depart. The shopping is quality retail therapy. Searcys St Pancras Restaurant is very impressive and their adjacent Champagne Bar, with heated leather seating and ‘press for champagne’ buttons, has 98m of serving space and is reputed to be Europe’s longest. Elegance and splendour is all around. Regular train services from the Midlands and elsewhere, including south east England, arrive here. London underground and Thameslink services are fast and frequent, too. The upper level at St Pancras International has a 9m high statue titled ‘The Meeting Place’, depicting a couple embracing-celebrating romance and travel. Also, a statue of Sir John Betjeman commemorates the

The Link

poet’s successful campaign to save the station, from demolition, during the 1960’s. The Searcys St Pancras Restaurant is very stylish, with pristine table settings and is located on the upper level at St Pancras International. Starters include Smoked Salmon, Scallops and Wild Venison Salami, amongst an array. Chicken Caesar and Gressingham Duck Salads are very popular. Shellfish choices include various, different Oyster selections, plus Crab and Lobster, for example. Mains of Lake District Beef Cheek and Loin of Lakeland Venison, along with Cornish Bream and Brixham Fish Pie, have regular ‘devotees’. Succulent, tender Steaks are further options and Sirloin, RibEye, plus the House-Aged, Lake District Beef, are very much enjoyed, by many. The complementing flavours of the dishes are, truly, a genuine credit

to the talented team of chefs and kitchen personnel. Desserts include Norfolk Treacle Tart with Devonshire clotted cream, and Warm Chocolate Cake accompanied by whisky ice cream. A most impressive wines/drinks list has something for all palates. Tasting events include champagnes and happen regularly. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, plus pretheatre dining, are all available here, and, if time is of the essence, ‘express’ is no problem. All dietary requirements can be catered for, also private dining, parties and occasions, accommodated. Gift vouchers are available – perhaps surprise someone special? Girls' getaway weekend!

Answers to Trivia on page 43:

Four friends spend several weeks planning the perfect girls getaway trip . . . shopping, casinos, massages, facials etc.

1. Spinach

Two days before they are due to leave, Mary's husband puts his foot down and tells her she isn't going. Mary's friends are very upset that she can't go, but what can they do.

4. India

Two days later the other three friends get to the hotel only to find Mary sitting in the bar drinking a glass of wine. "Wow, how long have you been here and how did you talk your husband into letting you come?" they asked. "Well, I've been here since last night." she replied. "Yesterday evening I was sitting on the couch when my husband came up behind me, put his hands over my eyes and said 'Guess who?' I pulled his hands away to find all he was wearing was his birthday suit! He took my hand and led me into the bedroom. The room was scented with perfume, there were two dozen candles burning and rose petals scattered around the room, and on the bed . . . he had handcuffs and ropes. Then he told me tie and cuff him to the bed, so I did. And then he said, 'Now you can do whatever you want.'

10 Important Facts to Remember 1. Death is the No. 1 killer in the world. 2. Life is sexually transmitted. 3. Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die. 4. Men have two motivations: hunger and hanky-panky, and they can't tell them apart. If you see a gleam in his eyes . . . make him a sandwich. 5. Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks, months, maybe even years. 6. Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in the hospital, dying of nothing. 7. All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism. 8. In the 60's, people took LSD to make the world weird. Now the world is weird, and people take Prozac to make it normal. 9. Life is like a jar of jalapeno peppers. What you do today may be a burning issue tomorrow. 10. Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.
