I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas, and rang in the New Year with suitable gusto, but hopefully, not too many hangovers! So, did you have a white Christmas in Surrey? Here in the West Midlands we had a promising start to the festive season with six inches of snow two weeks before Christmas, but within a few days it all melted and instead of a picture book snowy Christmas, we had the usual cold, wet, slushy one! My cats, however, were not complaining – they don’t approve of all that cold wet white stuff! On to this month’s magazine. As you will see, we’ve now have several people writing articles for us on a variety of subjects; some are local contributors and we would welcome more local writers. So, if you have something to say that you think our readers would be interested in, please email me at the address on page 6. We particularly would like someone to write for us on how to keep fit – and lose those extra pounds we gained over Christmas! If you run a gym or keep fit class, do give me a call on 01684 833715 and let’s talk – we get an article for our readers, and you get free advertising. And that’s all for this time. Enjoy the magazine, and if you are thinking of advertising, give me a call (number above) and let’s discuss the best options for you – our rates start from just £24 per month.

amazing team of staff with different specialities and training, and are on hand at all times for parents/carers to run any queries past us, or even catch up through the day if their child is with us.

Throughout the year we provide child care in a variety of settings during school term time. Using a different approach to the normal wrap around care, we ensure that we help children academically as well as ensuring that they have fun and carry out productive activities such as Christmas Shows, Dance Shows, Talent Shows or Dramatic Plays; and during the school holidays through a unique approach to holiday playschemes that are multi activity, and not just single activity specific.

All staff are DBS checked, fully vetted, had first aid training and trained in different areas of childcare. We are registered with Ofsted and accept childcare vouchers. Please feel free to contact us on:

07900 325 538 or via email qacademy@qsted.com

Within these activities and days we try to ensure that we are inclusive for children with a wide range of interests and not just sports, for example. We offer and specialise in many areas, and activities could include Art, Cooking, Sport, Bushcraft, Dance, Water Activities and much more. Our aim is to deliver an outstanding level of care for children and create a safe environment in which the children with us can learn, play, develop and flourish through a stimulating and enriching activity programme, in breakfast and after school clubs or holiday playschemes. We appreciate that it is so important for parents/carers to feel comfortable that their special little people are happy and in an environment in which they are happy. This is why we offer such a range of activities, have an 8

Croydon Kitchen Showroom Wins Prestigious

‘Long Term Achievement’ Award Featuring Special Guest Gerald Ratner!

delivered an entertaining, yet moving speech on failure and perseverance. Roy himself took to the stage at one point to deliver a motivational speech that will be fondly remembered by the Dream Doors network.

The showroom is owned by Roy who was praised on recognising the importance of customer service, achieving an average Checkatrade score of 9.75 and uploading over 100 photos for potential customers to view.

Roy had this to say about his award win:

When introducing Roy for the award, Ed Brewer, Director of Operations, had this to say: “Roy has proven to be the ideal Dream Doors owner, excelling in getting people into his showroom and providing gentle no pressure appointments. Dream Doors Croydon is truly a local business that customers love to deal with. He keeps things simple and, above all, honest.”

“We are absolutely ecstatic about this award win. Throughout the years we’ve completed countless kitchen makeovers for lovely people, and as time goes on I find myself enjoying the whole process more and more. We want to say thank you to all our incredible customers, without whom, we would never be where we are today.” Dream Doors is the UK’s leading replacement kitchen door franchise, offering made-to-

measure replacement kitchen doors and worktops. This gives customers a kitchen makeover for the fraction of the price of a full replacement. The company has over 60,000 kitchen makeovers to their name and has won ‘Best Kitchen Supplier’ and ‘Best Money Saving Product’ in the 2017 Express Home and Living Awards. Roy is encouraging anyone that’s interested in a kitchen facelift to get in contact for a friendly conversation. His showroom is based at: 159 Shirley Road, Shirley, Croydon. photo from left to right: Director of franchising, Bill Owen, Dream Doors Croydon owner, Roy Easthope, and Dream Doors MD, Troy Tappenden

The distinguished evening followed a day where almost 200 members of the franchise network were treated with a look at the success of the business as well as their vision for 2018. Although, the highlight of the day had to be special guest Gerald Ratner whom, infamous for his iconic PR blunder,

Get Walking

article by Ian Mathers BVMS (Hons) MRCVS

N

eed to shift some weight after Christmas? Put your boots on, grab the dog, and get moving! If, like me, you’ve over-indulged during the festivities, it’s time to do something about it. Chances are your dog might have eaten a bit more over Christmas and may need to lose a little weight too. Walking your dog every day is a fantastic way to address this. There have been numerous studies conducted on the benefits of dog ownership, and one of the most important advantages, is that it helps us stay physically healthy and lose weight.

A recent study in Sweden showed that dog ownership reduced the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by 36%, in people who lived alone. There is some evidence to suggest pet ownership may help reduce allergies in kids too. Dog walking can also improve your social life and help you make new friends, as dogs are great conversation starters. Regular walks are really important for your dog’s health too. Your dog is less likely to be overweight, and the mental stimulation from time spent outside is essential for your dog’s general wellbeing.

One note of caution: there are certain medical conditions (such as some types of arthritis) where it may be beneficial to restrict the amount of exercise your dog gets. If in any doubt, ask your vet for advice. (If your dog is on restricted exercise, it should also be getting less food, to avoid putting on weight.) Best of all, it’s absolutely free. Taking your dog for a walk through the beautiful countryside around Caterham costs nothing. So there’s no excuse; make a resolution to improve your own health, and that of your dog, and get out walking as often as you can.

Dog owners are less likely to be overweight, are likely to have fewer minor health problems, and they are way more likely to achieve the two and half hours per week, of moderate aerobic activity, recommended by NHS health experts. There are loads of other great benefits of dog ownership; you are less likely to have high blood pressure and more likely to have lower cholesterol, leading to better overall cardiovascular health, and a lower risk of heart attack. In a recent tax case, the taxpayer did not check to see if their payment had cleared their bank account before the deadline date. As it had not done so, the tax payer was liable for interest on the late payment even though the cheque payment was made in time. It was found that as the tax payer did not choose to make the payment by BACS transfer, nor by internet transfer and nor by debit card, they had no certainty that the payment had cleared their account. It is the responsibility of the tax payer to ensure that the tax payment is received by H.M. Revenue & Customs in time. Tax payments that are received late will incur interest charges and penalty charges may also be added to the amount due. A late return may cause a late payment which will incur penalties and interest. These are then unnecessary amounts paid from YOU to H.M. Revenue & Customs.

WHAT’S ON AT THE MILLER CENTRE THEATRE 11 – 20 January 2018 at 8pm

40 years of drama

This is a bedroom farce. Saucy, simple – and very funny. It concerns a lively lady named Harriet who lives a comfortable life in a luxury flat in Brighton. It is all paid for by two gentlemen – each unknown to the other – who pay the rent in return for the occasional comfort of Harriet’s bed. All goes well until the arrival of a stream of visitors. First is Harriet’s long-time friend Anne, a girl with an eye for the men and just separated from her husband. Then Anne’s husband, who has always carried a torch for Harriet. Finally, two suspicious wives looking for their husbands who, they think, are being treated in Harriet’s nursing home. Preposterous? Of course. But forget logic. Prepare for an evening of undemanding fun.

A gently romantic story where, for a group of English ladies, a kind of peaceful content blossoms with the flowering of the wisteria adorning a beautiful Italian villa. Set just after World War One, it follows two bored and unhappy wives whose marriages to a solicitor and a writer are in weary decay. On impulse, the two ladies rent a villa in Italy and invite two other women to join them. Together, they come under the spell of the enchanted villa. When joined by their husbands at the end of their stay, they rediscover happiness and an unexpected touch of romance. A sweet and touching conclusion to a play about taking stock of life amid the beauty of nature.

NEVER

the

SINNER BY JOHN LOGAN

DIRECTED BY SHEILA CARR

15 – 24 March 2018 at 8pm

£9/£11

Based on a real event which shocked America in 1924, the play tells how two privileged young men – Nathan Leopold and Robert Loeb – murdered a 14-year-old boy for no other reason than to prove they were superior beings above the law. They were not. Arrested, they came to trial in Chicago, charged with murder. As always, the courtroom provides rich drama. As the trial unfolds, it becomes the setting for an argument over the death penalty. The State wants the two young men hanged. Defending them is the renowned lawyer Clarence Darrow. Calling on the judge to take account of the two men’s mental state, he argues that hanging them would be a crime itself: that it is reasonable to hate the sin, but never the sinner. Altogether, a truly gripping account of a historic trial.

***** American Presidents . . . past

Remember those glory days when the worst president the US had ever had was Shrub (aka George Dubya Bush junior) . . . oh joy, oh bliss! 27 But all was not well in the US of A. Terrorists captured three ex-presidents - Bush senior, Bill Clinton and Dubya - and took them out into the yard to shoot them. Bush senior is up first and is led out into the middle of the yard. Just in time, he looks up and shouts ‘Hurricane!' Everyone looks up and while they’re distracted, Bush senior runs to the fence, jumps over and escapes. Clinton takes due note and when it’s his turn, he looks up, shouts ‘Tornado!’ and escapes the same way. Dubya has also been watching and thinks to himself ‘I need a catastrophe, I need a catastrophe’, and when it’s his turn, he looks up and shouts ‘Fire!’

. . . and present During a lull between the speeches at the recent presidential swearing-in ceremony, Melania Trump leaned over to chat with the Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson. "You know, I bought Donald a parrot for Christmas. That bird is so smart, Donald has already taught him to say over two hundred words!" "Wow, that's pretty impressive," said Tillerson, "but you do realize that he just speaks the words . . . he doesn't really understand what they mean." "Oh, I know that," Melania replied, "But then neither does the parrot."

Flocks of Fabulous Fieldfares

O

ne of our most distinctive winter visitors, the fieldfare is a large colourful thrush which migrates to the UK from northern Europe and can be seen in Surrey at this time of year. Its name is possibly derived from the old Anglo Saxon ‘feldfare’ or ‘traveller through the fields’. Fieldfares migrate south to avoid harsher frozen winter climes and to take advantage of foraging opportunities offered by our mostly snow-free countryside. Large winter roost sites in the

22

county include Thursley and Ockley Commons, where birds will congregate in suitable habitat to keep warm overnight and for mutual protection from nocturnal predators. The birds feast on worms and other invertebrates and enjoy abundant wild fruit supplies found in hedgerows. They will also venture into our gardens to take advantage of the more exotic fruiting species we like to grow – fallen apples are a particular favourite.

Depending on various factors, such as the severity of winter further north and the abundance/scarcity of berries in their breeding territory, fieldfares are first noticed in increasing numbers in Surrey from late September, with a peak being reached in January. Numbers steadily decline as we head towards spring, until the last birds head north again in April, with a few stragglers seen occasionally in May. It’s thought up to a million birds make the journey to and fro across the North Sea every year! The fieldfare is red listed as a species of conservation concern. It can be recognised from its light grey rump, white underwings, a red/brown back, a grey crown and nape and a black spotted ochre-tinged breast. Its distinctive call in the winter is a repeated “schack-schack-schack”. Often noticed in mixed flocks with the other overwintering thrush, the redwing, flocks of several hundred can be seen

where feeding opportunities are good - although we do not see as many as we did in the 70s and 80s. Flocks of 50-150 are more commonly seen these days, accompanied by the redwings, which tend to be more wary and take flight more quickly when threatened. What is noticeable, however, is that more birds are reported seen feeding in gardens, particularly those with berry or fruit trees.

Fieldfares can be quite aggressive and an individual can take ‘possession’ of a fruit-laden tree and chase away other birds looking to tuck-in! So this January keep an eye out for this rather striking feathered visitor - particularly if you have any fruits or berries left on your garden trees. If not, keep your bird table well-stocked with fruit and you may enjoy a close-up view of this traveller from the far north.

Iconic Telephone Boxes for Sale T

he image of the red phone box is one that is known across the world as one of the iconic symbols of Britain. The striking Post Office-red boxes once provided a splash of colour in villages, towns and cities across the UK - and often sparked a sigh of a relief in many a stranded traveller. But the widespread use of mobile phones, coupled with vandalism, has sounded the death-knell for the boxes. Just 10 years ago, there were 92,000 BT phone boxes on our streets. Now there are just 51,500 kiosks including 11,000 tradi-tional red phone boxes - across the UK. As payphone use keeps falling - calls have declined by more than 80% in the last five years and around 60% of phone boxes lose money - the numbers of red and modern kiosks will continue to shrink as BT cuts their numbers to match demand. But you can now secure your piece of telecom history - either privately or for your community - as the company is selling off its surplus old red phone boxes. The company has teamed up kiosk and payphone specialist X2 Connect to sell original cast iron K6 boxes, refurbished and finished in their original red and black livery, with prices starting from ÂŁ2,750. The K6, which celebrated its 80th birthday in 2016, was introduced in 1936 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V. The Jubilee kiosk, as it became known, was designed by English architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and became the first genuinely

26

standard telephone box to be installed all over the country. Sir Giles was also responsible for designing Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral, Battersea Power Station and Bankside Power Station, now home to contemporary art gallery Tate Modern. By the end of production in 1968 there were nearly 70,000 in Britain but the advance of telecom technology alongside soaring vandalism costs has left BT facing an uphill struggle to fulfill its responsibility to provide emergency kiosks. This is despite successful new ideas which have helped phone boxes pay their way, including advertising on 20,000 modern kiosks and combining Wi-Fi and cash machine services with both modern and traditional boxes. BT last sold red boxes direct to the public in the mid 1980s when thousands of old K6s were sold off at public auctions as part of an extensive payphone modernisation programme.

BT Payphones, says: "The most fantastic thing about the Adopt a Kiosk scheme has been how communities across the country have become involved. Red phone boxes have become a focal point for all sorts of activities of real value to the local community. It's so gratifying to see our old, rarely used boxes given a new lease of life. Now you can buy a twentieth century design icon that's famous around the world for your home or garden or you could even buy one as a gift for the person you know who has everything." If you're interested in owning your own piece of telecommunications history, call 01636 611110 or visit: www.x2connect.com/shop/BT But be warned - they weigh three quarters of a ton so you can banish any ideas about turning them into a shower unless you have a groundfloor bathroom!

Since 2008, the company has been selling decommissioned red phone boxes to local communities for just a ÂŁ1 under its Adopt a Kiosk scheme, enabling villages across the land to preserve part of their, and Britain's, heritage. The scheme has captured the imagination of people up and down the country and more than 1,800 kiosks have already been adopted. Boxes have been fitted with life-saving defibrillation machines, turned into art galleries, public libraries, exhibitions and information centres. One village even turned theirs into a one-night-only pub. Katherine Ainley, general manager for

Happy New Year to all our members and readers.

It is mid-winter now and January is considered to be one of the coldest months in the year. Outdoors, snowdrops are starting to appear and shrubs such as jasminium, nudiflorum and viburnum tinus are in bloom. In milder conditions, polyanthus, primroses, wallflowers, honesty and Brompton stocks may flower. Improved light encourages new growth. Gardeners are busy, browsing through catalogues, ordering plants and seeds and waiting expectantly for the brighter days ahead. Bird feed should be full of carbohydrates and a drink of water is essential. Help fish to breathe by keeping a small corner of the pool protected from frost and ice. Important tasks to be undertaken • Most gardeners shred their Christmas tree and use it as a mulch. It is the ideal time to

28

protect shrubs and trees with leaf mould, compost and farmyard manure. • Make sure all established plants are adequately supported with strong stakes. • All new arrivals of trees and shrubs should be planted and secured firmly. Brush snow off any branches.

• Check stored produce and in particular inspect all dormant tubers and corms, that are stored away. • Plan vegetable crop rotation. ▪▪ Harvest leeks and parsnips. ▪▪ Warm soil up and grow early peas. ▪▪ Start chitting early potatoes.

• Dig up and expose clods, for the elements to take over.

▪▪ Grow earlies in containers/ bags under cover.

▪▪ Protect outdoor peaches and nectarines with polythene/ plastic to prevent peach leaf curl.

▪▪ Remove yellowing leaves from winter brassica. ▪▪ Force rhubarb.

• Prune apple and pear trees, blackcurrant, gooseberry and redcurrant.

In the greenhouse ▪▪ Clean all panes and get rid of litter and debris.

• Plant currant fruit bushes in a sunny, well-prepared soil.

▪▪ Clean pots for use in the new season with hot water and a mild detergent.

• Prune wisteria, rose bushes and cut out old stems of sedum. • Cut back foliage from ornamental grasses. • Cut back damaged, diseased and old stems of brightly coloured willows. • Dead head winter pansies. • Disperse worm casts from lawns.

▪▪ Protect potato plants. ▪▪ Plant amaryllis bulbs in pots. ▪▪ An electric propagator will speed up germination. The Trading Hut ▪▪ We are hoping to order new stocks of vegetable seeds, potatoes, onions and shallots from reputable firms for our members.

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

▪▪ Fertilizers and bird feed are always in stock. ▪▪ The netting we have can be used for various jobs in the garden, and prices have plummeted down.

Try out your horticultural knowledge by looking at the two photos of early spring bulbs. Look out for the February edition of The Link where we will name your suggestions!

▪▪ The team members are always available for advice and guidance on most gardening matters. Do visit us for help. The 2018 schedule will be out in the new year with a packed programme. Show dates to put in your diaries are 14 April, 7 July and 8 September 2018. Our members will benefit from our affiliations with the RHS, Surrey Horticultural Federation and National Dahlia Society. It costs only £5 to join one of Caterham’s oldest societies, established 1886 at the trading hut on Saturday mornings, or via catdisthortisoc@gmail.com.

Your Society participating in the community Although Christmas is well over, with only the natural Christmas tree to shred and return to the ground as mulch, we are still enjoying the memories of participating in the Christmas tree festival held in St Lawrence’s ancient church, Caterham Hill. There were 26 entries with local groups and organisations and businesses joining in the fun. Much pleasure was had by all who participated and by those who visited.

We were pleased that the Society shared joint first with the Caterham U3A art group in the “organisations” category, as voted for by the visiting public. The pleasure was extended by our tree being exhibited afterwards in the Douglas Brunton Centre, a hub of services for older people. Good job that the tree was displayed in a large wheel barrow, which came in handy for wheeling around to the Centre! You can see how much the committee enjoyed it from the photo. Special thanks to Jean BurnsThomas and Janet Manning our committee members who decorated the tree so imaginatively for us, and to husband for wheeling the tree around to the Douglas Brunton Centre afterwards! We would especially like to thank the Guild of Friends of St Lawrence’s Church for the opportunity to join in, and for their wonderful work in further opening up the church for community involvement. www.stmary-caterham.org.uk/ friends.

urrey-based BowenTechnique Practitioners Jan Morris and Amanda Cusack are working their magic across the county helping people with their pain and mobility issues. The Bowen Technique is a gentle manipulative therapy. There is no vigorous ‘pulling about’. Rolling moves are made on skin, muscles and tendons and elicit a healing effect on the body. The technique, now spread worldwide, gets its name from Thomas Bowen who discovered that certain moves on the body helped recovery from many conditions. His work in his popular clinic in Geelong, Australia, was verified by the 1975 Victorian Government Inquiry into alternative health care professions. Since qualifying over 10 years ago, Jan has enjoyed much success in her work. “I decided to train following a successful Bowen treatment to my own knee, and my ‘very sceptical’

husband being ‘so taken’ with the results of treatment for his tennis elbow. I was hearing so many good things about Bowen,” says Jan, “so with my husband’s encouragement I went for it, and signed up to train as a practitioner! It’s so satisfying" she says, "when a client comes to you at the end of their tether and you are able to help them with this amazing therapy.” Jan certainly made a difference to mother of two and finance worker Deana: "Having suffered from sciatica for six months and trying other treatments without success,” says keen golfer Deana, “I decided to try a friend's recommendation and visit Jan Morris, who specialises in the Bowen Technique in Purley. After just two treatments, my pain has gone. The treatment is very gentle and relaxing so it is hard to believe it will make any difference, but it was totally effective. My husband and sister are both fans too. I highly recommend Jan and the Bowen Technique.” Jan’s Surrey colleague, Amanda Cusack, who is also a

Reflexologist and Massage therapist, working near Reigate, agrees. When former sportsman Mark, whose job in a garden centre involves heaving lifting, came to see her, he was sceptical. But after an ongoing Achilles problem failed to respond to conventional medicine, he was convinced to give Bowen a try. “At first, I didn’t believe such gentle movements would have any effect on my legs. I did feel, however, for the first time in my life, that I was allowed to relax, a very strange feeling for me! But I still didn't see how it would help. Well after two days I was astonished when I noticed that I wasn't walking with a limp and the pain had seriously reduced - I wasn't expecting that!” says a delighted Mark. “I have since had Bowen on my shoulders and neck – I’m a drummer in a band so my shoulders are under stress. After each Bowen session I feel so much more relaxed, flexible and stress free. It's something you have to try for yourself to truly understand and experience what Bowen could actually do for you.”

Fantastic Ile De Re I

f you look for tranquillity on your holidays, then you should visit Ile De Re, a beautiful island accessed via a bridge from Rochelle, France. My husband, Michael, and I visited the island in September last year, when many of the tourists had left. We were astounded with the beauty of the place and the peace and quiet. The leafy squares and narrow streets with white painted houses and green shuttered windows looked like a dream to us. That was until we tried to turn a sharp bend towing our large caravan. The residents looked on in amusement as they

36

watched my husband delicately, with skill and care, manoeuvre around the corner, missing their homes with inches to spare! Our campsite was great and that evening we sat outside listening to birdsong as we watched the sun go down. What more can you ask? The island is flat and with such narrow streets that most visitors hire bikes. There are many cycle paths, and these will take you among some beautiful sights. On the one side you will be amazed by the fields of golden corn, and vineyards, whilst on the other side there are golden beaches and the vast blue Atlantic Ocean, with shimmering yachts. But, if you get saddle sore you can use your car to explore – you just need to take it slowly.

During Roman times Ile De Re was an archipelago, consisting of three small islands. The space between was mainly taken up with the salt marshes. This area is called Loix, and is one of my favourite places. This peninsula inside the islands is wild and natural, and you can explore the diversity and originality of the islands natural heritage. Today the Government of Ile De Re, still encourage the historic salt production. We found the salt marshes very interesting. We sat for a long while watching and photographing the men working the salt pans, gathering salt in the old way, as they have done for centuries. You can purchase the tiny bags of salt in the tourist shops in Saint Martins Bay or any of the other small towns along the coast. The island has a thriving economy based on wine production, and fresh fruit and vegetables, which is run as a cooperative. On our visit to the winery, we tasted some delicious wines that are delicately blended with cognac. They say you have to visit the distillery to discover the secret of the mixing. We certainly did, and purchased several bottles to take home for special occasions. There are many interesting and entertaining places on the island to visit; the hotels are lovely and the beaches are safe and clean. If you would like more information just Goggle Ile De Re, and you will find what you are looking for. Our visit to the island was fantastic and one we will never forget.

This exhibition will explore the range of styles Denise encompassed during her artistic career and in addition to her designs for textiles and wallpaper, we will be displaying many newly acquired ceramics, generously donated to us by Peter Crotty, husband of Denise's daughter Rosemary. Wren studied at Kingston School of Art under the influential Art Nouveau designer Archibald Knox. When Knox quit, Wren and her fellow students formed the Knox Guild of Design and Craft, following Knox's mantra; 'Aim at order, hope for beauty'. The Guild was based at 24 Market Place, Kingston, displaying their work locally at Kingston Museum and at the Whitechapel Gallery in East London. Wren went on to establish the Oxshott Pottery in Surrey, designed prints for West End department store Liberty of London, and published extensively. and sleight of hand. Close Up Magic is one of the most popular and impressive forms of the art and this unique event showcases some of the best exponents direct from the sell-out shows at The Magic Circle. Audiences get to experience the magic in an intimate setting, often taking part themselves. Prepare to be amazed! The format is informal with a limited audience so they can be as close to the magic as possible. Three magicians of contrasting styles perform a 25 minute set in turn, typically with cards, coins and borrowed objects. There is a short interval between each act to help the audience catch their breath before the show resumes. Although all shows are of a universal nature and young enthusiasts are welcomed, 80 minutes of closeup is not usually recommended for those under 10. 7.30pm -9.30pm. (Bar opens: 7pm) Tickets £16.50. A New Dawn

In the first of a new series of columns, Caterham Valley For You manager Sue McGeown shines a spotlight on an exciting new initiative in the town.

W

hile hitting the streets in recent weeks in search of something special, you may have seen the name Caterham Valley For You appearing on posters and banners around our town accompanied by a cheeky band of elves intent on taking over shop windows. To dispel any remaining mystery, Caterham Valley For You is the name of our area's new Business Improvement District (BID) - a collection of local independent and national businesses who are pulling together to make Caterham Valley a more attractive place to live, shop and work. Led by chairman Andrew Browne, who runs the beautiful Godstone Road branch of JJ Browne & Son jewellers, Caterham Valley For You has many exciting plans for 2018. In these pages over the coming months, we look forward to sharing the stories behind our local businesses and celebrating the characters who make our community tick. First, however, let's bring a little sparkle to the party. Did you know, for instance, that our chairman Andrew's links to the town run all the way back to 1921, when his grandfather opened the family's first store? Never resting on their laurels, the shop has since been joined by another branch in Croydon Road, which is run by Andrew's brother Jim. It's a truly independent family business with Caterham firmly at its heart. They are one of many.

The Caterham Valley Elves Takeover brought festive fun to town this Christmas

While the Caterham Masterplan is currently in consultation, we hope that one day Caterham Valley will be widely known as a jewel in East Surrey's crown. We know that it's an increasingly competitive world, and that our town centre has to stand out for all the right reasons. As such, our efforts in the coming months will be aimed at helping to create a positive and proactive trading environment that is fully engaged with its community, both on the ground and across our digital platforms. You can learn more about the businesses involved in the BID at www.caterhamvalley.co.uk. With the royal wedding, FIFA World Cup and other major international events to add to the numerous creative community events to be held locally in 2018, we look forward to joining you all in a year of celebration. Caterham Valley For You has big plans for our little corner of Surrey and we hope that you're as excited as we are to be at the start of the journey. Until next time, Sue

WINE: If It Sparkles…

S

parkling wines add a certain ‘something’ to a dining occasion and, indeed, are extremely popular for celebrations, parties, functions and events, etc. I searched various supermarkets and located numerous, splendid, sparkling wines, including champagnes, which are chosen regularly. Waitrose supermarkets are the food retail division of the John Lewis partnership. There are many outlets, which now include some small convenience stores, too. The start was founded, during 1904, by Wallace Waite, Arthur Rose and David Taylor. Following David Taylor’s departure from the business the surnames of the remaining founders were combined to create the Waitrose name. Waitrose Prosecco (NV) Italy is a very popular, easy drinking, smooth production. This classic Italian sparkling wine is fresh and fruity for the mouthfeel and palate sensation. Chosen a lot as a great apéritif, prosecco is also loved as a spritz with soda water and mixed with various liqueurs, etc. Waitrose Cava Brut, Castillo Perelada (NV) Spain is another regular selection, for many. I find this fruity cava to have excellent quality and elegance. It is produced in partnership with Castillo Perelada, a renowned and much-respected family-owned winery in Spain that has a history dating back to the 14th century. The Link

Waitrose Rosé Champagne (NV) has an elegance and complements many dining tables, on numerous occasions. For a fruity rosé fizz, I find this wine perfect. Produced by the House of Alexandre Bonnet, this splendid pinot noir production has a beautiful colour and is an ideal apéritif, as well as often being enjoyed with a meal. Fantastic to add colour and sparkle to al fresco dining. Waitrose Brut Special Réserve Vintage Champagne I find very much suited to the ‘top table’. This multi award winner is both full and rich, being greatly appreciated on the mouthfeel, followed by a superb and impressive palate. The long finish adds to the pleasures of this production. Waitrose, which possesses a royal warrant to supply groceries, is a retailer offering food and beverages of outstanding quality. These sparkling selections, with their fine and persistent perlages, are just some of the many available, that appeal to me. Take time and pleasure to locate your favourites. www.waitrose.com As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Rose Pruning T

hank you to everyone who emailed and called me over pruning apple trees, which I featured in November’s issue. I am pleased it has pointed you in the right direction. Don’t forget, you have until February for apple trees to be pruned. This is also the same with roses, so do not worry, you have not missed the boat and, as promised, here is some advice.

46

Winter is now with us, and is setting in, and it’s a good time to prune your roses. The aim is to remove damage and reduce height. Roses do not have a great root stock and the winter weather can cause damage with wind rocking the roots. First of all, you are looking to take out what I was taught are the three D’s: dead, diseased or

damage wood (as cleanly as possible). If you’re unsure if the wood is dead a simple way is to gently scratch the bark and if it is not green underneath then it is dead. This method can be followed from the top of a suspected stem all the way down to the base. Once the three D’s are cut out, they and all their leaves should be removed and burnt as they could contain disease such as ‘black spot’ or ‘rust’ that you do not want carrying onto next year’s growth. When pruning a stem cut just above a leaf bud, cutting away from the bud so that any rainwater runs away from the new bud. As a rough guide, a rose needs to be cut back to five buds from where this year’s growth started. It can then be reduced again in March back to the strongest looking bud. Following this pruning I would recommend a winter wash spray (a number of products are on the market) to help keep disease down to a minimum.

XX

I would not recommend feeding, because if there are a few weeks where the winter weather is good, you don’t want the plant to put on new growth that is then going to be damaged by frosts. However, mulching around the base of the plant with either horse manure or leaf mulch will help to protect the roots. When to spray or not to spray? That is the question. Spraying roses is always best done to prevent diseases. If you have spent all this effort keeping them free of ‘black spot’ etc. then it would be a real shame to lose out through not catching diseases early.

from leaf to leaf or plant to plant. This way the rose can build up its immune system so spray every fourteen days if you can. Next time, to cheer us up from the cold dark winter months, I will look at adding colour into your garden to add interest as well as making your garden seem larger than it really is.

I spray my roses with a rose spray (many on the market) as soon as the buds start to burst - not only the rose but anything within a few feet of the plant as some spores i.e. ‘black spot’ are spread by rain droplets splashing spores If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. Wildlife in Focus

S

ince 2002 the population of goldfinches has increased by 80%. The success of the goldfinch appears to be largely due to the increasing popularity of feeding birds in our gardens, but the British Trust for Ornithology is wanting to find out exactly how important the food is we put out for the birds. Do goldfinches prefer nyger seed? Or would they rather sunflower hearts? Here its sunflower seeds. Go to the BTO website and you can take part in the goldfinch survey which lasts until the end of February. A success story is good news but there are other animals in dire straits. One is the much loved hedgehog. It seems inconceivable that they could be extinct in our children’s life time, but this is the plight of hedgehogs. Here again we can all do our bit to help because hedgehogs love gardens.

longer grass and piles of prunings in a quiet corner and never use slug pellets; hedgehogs love slugs so leave them to control your invertebrates. Extra food in spring and autumn can help save a hedgehog’s life. Never feed bread and milk, dog or cat food is fine and some clean water.

Hedgehogs need four or five gardens so if you think they’re in your area chat to your neighbours about cutting small holes in your fences so that our prickly friend can move between them. Don’t be too tidy. Leave areas of fallen leaves,

Collectively we can do much to help our wildlife as shown by the success with goldfinches. Much of what we can do doesn’t require huge effort or money, all it needs is for us to ‘think wildlife’ and factor them into our gardening lives.

The Link

An elder bush outside my kitchen window should’ve been cut down long ago as it’s growing through a chaenomeles but I’ve always found a reason to keep it; the flowers provide nectar, the berries food for the birds, and it’s a place where the blue tits eat the food they’ve taken from the feeders. One morning I was astonished when I looked up from making porridge to find myself staring into the eyes of a sparrow hawk. Once again I rushed for my camera with little hope of the bird being there when I got back, but I was in luck. Maybe you will be too if you ‘think wildlife in 2018.’ It may not be a sparrow hawk that visits but what ever wildlife comes to your garden, you will be giving it a safe haven.

A woman ran a red traffic light and crashed into a man's car. Both of their cars were demolished but amazingly neither of them was hurt. After they crawled out of their cars, the woman said, "Wow, just look at our cars! There's nothing left, but fortunately we are unhurt. This must be some kind of miracle!" The man replied, "I agree with you completely. It really is a miracle that neither of us was hurt!"

Solution to Hidato:

The woman continued, "And look at this, here's another miracle. My car is completely demolished, but my bottle of 75 year old scotch didn't break. This must be a sign that we are meant to drink this vintage delicacy and celebrate our good fortune." Then she handed the bottle to the man. The man nodded his head in agreement, opened the bottle, drank half of it and then handed it back to the woman. The woman took the bottle, put the cap back on and immediately handed it back to the man. The man asked, "Aren't you having any?" And the woman replied, "Nah. I think I'll just wait for the police."
