arly Years is not “just play” as the beginning of their school journey it sets children up for life. We could not agree more at Sutton High Junior School and I feel truly privileged when I go into our Nursery and Reception classrooms to see our qualified and experienced Early Years Teachers and Teaching Assistants and the stimulating learning environment which not only nurtures but promotes challenge for our curious, inquisitive and independent girls. They really are ‘Discovering School’ and the motivation to learn and reasons why a knowledge of number, reading and writing is invaluable in their everyday lives. All of us who have experienced being a Reception teacher know that visible progress happens rapidly – just turn to their writing journal at the start of the year and compare it to six months later, marks turn into letters, which

turn into phonetically written words which develop into sentences. It truly is magical and learning is rapid, their brains making connections and stretching faster than an adults! Reception can clearly describe to you about ‘growth mindset’ and Nursery not far behind with their understanding of the power of ‘yet’. A recent example was when I went across to our Early Years one morning to be confronted with crime scene tape across Reception’s door, even our lovely cleaner was confused, what had happened? (This was hot on the heels of bear footprints the previous week and a tasting of porridge to ensure it was just right!) The favourite tale of Little Red Riding Hood was told and re-told, even Pie Corbett (English teacher guru) commented on the video Twitter feed. By the time I had climbed through the crime scene tape (heart pounding and hoping that this really was just a

lesson!) I was met by a room full of detectives looking at the evidence, even Grandma’s teeth, where had she gone? The girls discussed, questioned, looked at facts (rather than opinion) and independently decided that they needed to write warning signs and to work collaboratively to find Grandma. Retelling stories stimulated them to act out and then write their own, the motivation to learn was tangible and exciting. The Nursery and Reception girls will take risks during this time of play, their imagination and skills will grow, the strong foundations of their future schooling is set and which is why ‘Discovering School’ at Sutton High is so rewarding. This is when the learning magic truly begins, which will last a life time, and they will leave as 18 year olds clearly remembering those first learning steps which quickly turned into a learning sprint. During the summer term Sutton High Junior School will be running music and storytelling events for girls aged 2 – 4, designed to build confidence before starting school. The aim is to help make sure you and your child are skipping down the path when it’s time for the first day! This month we welcome several new advertisers, starting with Open House on page 2, Sutton High School on page 5, Beautify on page 12 and Pilates Origin on page 18. We also welcome back a number of former advertisers, so keep an eye out for them as you browse through the magazine. Living in the country, as I do, is wonderful most of the time, but can be challenging when the weather becomes temperamental and dumps several inches of snow on us, as happened recently. However, madam weather is ever capricious and at the time of writing this, all traces of snow have disappeared and it is a beautiful sunny day; it’s even – dare I say it – warm! So, hopefully this heralds the start of spring, and The Caterham & District Horticultural Society and Foliation both have lots of tips and ideas for you to get your gardens looking beautiful again after the winter. As always, we have a host of articles on a variety of subjects, with something for everyone to enjoy, including advice on how to keep your pets’ weight under control, and news about a defibrillator which is now available in Kenley. And that’s all for this month. Until next time, keep happy and healthy.

Feet First! P

roblems with your feet can stop you getting out and about. They can also affect your balance and increase the risk of falling so it’s important to look after your feet, and report problems such as foot pain and decreased feeling to a healthcare professional. A simple foot routine will help keep your feet in good condition, including: • wearing suitable footwear • keeping your toenails short • regularly moisturising your feet • checking for cracked skin, blisters and signs of infection. You may find that trainers or well-cushioned shoes are more comfortable than ordinary shoes and offer welcome support. These footwear tips can help you feel more confident on your feet: • Always wear shoes or slippers. To avoid slips, never walk indoors in bare feet, socks or tights. • Wear shoes that fit well. Highsided shoes with low heels, thin soles and a good grip are a good choice.

The Link

• Avoid wearing sandals and shoes with high heels. • Wear slippers that have a good grip and fasten up. Loose or worn out slippers may cause you to trip. Good nail care can help to keep feet feeling comfortable. Nails that are too long can press against the end of the shoe and the constant pressure can cause soreness. Toenails that have been poorly cut can also become ingrown. Common problems like corns, cracked skin and ingrown toenails can be treated successfully. Conditions like diabetes or circulatory problems

can all be picked up by looking at the feet. If you have a long-term condition, such as diabetes, arthritis or chronic problems with blood circulation in your legs, your feet are particularly vulnerable. Check your feet regularly and ensure you attend check-ups as requested. If you notice any problems, report them to your GP as soon as possible. Age UK Surrey’s Feet First Service offers affordable basic foot care for older people aged 50+. After assessment, people who are diabetic or taking Warfarin or similar medication can be treated. Feet First offer toenail cutting and filing as well as callus filing, referral to NHS podiatrists and advice on looking after your feet. Clinics are based across Surrey with a new one recently opened at the Douglas Brunton Centre, Park Road, Caterham, CR3 5TA. To find out more about Feet First and to make an appointment call 01883 343096 or visit the Age UK Surrey website: www.ageuksurrey.org.uk or you can email enquiries@ageuksurrey.org.uk

Health & Beauty Training Beautify aims at delivering courses in a safe, relaxed environment

H

ello, my name is Jenny Rennie and I started my own educational journey 15 years ago, embarking on a year long beauty course, which at the time was a huge undertaking. I left school with barely any qualifications and even less confidence, so being able to gain a qualification on my own merit was an important part of my journey. After doing my Beauty Level 2 I went on to learn complimentary therapies and now have over 30 qualifications covering a range of wonderful treatments that I can now offer my clients - I suppose you could call me a total therapy enthusiast!

environment, based within a bespoke log cabin in my back-garden with no more the four people at a time. This type of atmosphere enables me to deliver one-to-one training, and also helps people who find the prospect of going back to education after many years, too daunting. I have teamed up with the UK’s leading beauty professional membership to offer short insurable courses that will give you a recognisable qualification on completion. My aim is to empower people to change their lives through education in an industry that has brought me much success and joy.

Sometimes life changing events can alter our perspective and our path. When this happened to me, life became very precious and I began to realise that what I enjoyed most about my career was passing on my knowledge to other people - not just selling them random products, but getting them to understand what the source of the problem could be. So I began working in a college and delivering beauty courses.

Going Cuckoo for Spring!

H

ave you heard a cuckoo yet this year? Its unmistakeable call can be heard echoing through Surrey woodlands in April. It’s traditional to write to The Times when you hear the first cuckoo of spring - the earliest ever reliable record of a cuckoo in England is thought to be in Farnham on February 20th 1953! The cuckoo is a shy and elusive bird. Rarely seen, it is about the size of a mistle thrush, hawk–like and grey in appearance. If it weren’t for the male’s distinctive call – surely one of

14

the most recognisable bird sounds the cuckoo might go unnoticed. While celebrated as the vocal herald of spring, the cuckoo is also much reviled because of its rather ruthless habits. It is a brood parasite, laying its eggs in other, smaller birds’ nests, fooling the foster parents into bringing up the impostor chick. The cuckoo is a summer visitor, making the journey to our shores from sub-Saharan Africa, usually arriving in late March or early April. Research has shown that the males might only spend as little as eight

The female lays her eggs – up to 20 in a season – singly and curiously in the nest of the same species that previously had brought it up! In Britain the nests usually belong to a reed warbler, dunnock, or meadow pipit. One of the host’s eggs is removed by the cuckoo, which lays its egg directly into the nest. The cuckoo’s egg usually mimics that of its host and is laid before the clutch has been completed. The cuckoo egg then hatches in around eleven days quicker than a bird of similar size and usually before the host’s. The young cuckoo, using a pronounced dip in its back specially evolved for the job, and within hours of being born, selects each of the foster parents’ eggs and heaves them one by one out of the nest. To further fool the foster parents, the young cuckoo has evolved a begging call that mimics four or five young, encouraging the foster parents to work harder in their search for insect food.

Cuckoos feed primarily on hairy caterpillars, a resource left untapped by other birds because they are unpalatable or even toxic to them. In September the young cuckoo migrates alone – the adult cuckoos have long gone. Navigating using the stars, the sun and the earth’s magnetic field, it too finds its way to sub-Saharan Africa. Unfortunately the cuckoo has suffered in recent years – there are thought to be only 15,000 breeding pairs left in the UK. Half of our cuckoos have disappeared in Britain in the last twenty-five years and Europe-wide it is in drastic decline. This iconic bird is now globally threatened and on the red list for conservation priority. We don’t know the exact reasons why the species is suffering - they will be many and complex. But if we want to save this famous herald of spring, we need to act soon, or its enigmatic call could disappear from our woodlands forever.

A

s many of you will know the Lions have been celebrating 100 years of service to the community worldwide. The late Queen Mother is acknowledged as the catalyst for the introduction of Lions Clubs into this country, when in the war many Canadian servicemen visiting London were appalled by the way the children of the Blitz lived, with poor food, few clothes, frequent danger, mums serving in the factories and dads fighting overseas and so many

To mark the hundredth birthday of Lions Clubs International, the Countess of Wessex, who has been the Patron of Lions Clubs of the British Isles since 2004, held a royal reception at Buckingham Palace on 28th February in celebration of a “Century of Service”. Although it was not possible for all Clubs to be represented COGS were fortunate that their current President Lion, Ian Macaulay, was able to attend what he described as a “good evening” and he was delighted that the Countess shook his hand. He said that there were over 400 people there and that the

Countess spoke to guests and praised the work done by Lions. She also wore a Lions pin and was given the Lions highest award, the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. The not such good news is that the heavy snow in the area meant that COGS had to cancel their annual Barn Dance, due to be held on 3rd of March. At the time of writing a new date has yet to be decided on. However, the annual fund raising concert will be going ahead as planned. This year it will feature Vocal Dimension, the close harmony choir that will be appearing at Caterham School, Harestone Valley Road on 7th April. The bar opens at 7pm and the concert starts at 8pm. Tickets are £15 each and can be bought from Lion Tony Skilbeck on 01883 335945.

my fellow China Challengers in ten weeks time, for what I know will be an adventure of a lifetime.” t’s less than three months to go until a group of 34 intrepid trekkers head off to the Great Wall of China in aid of St Catherine's Hospice.

The bespoke trek is the second overseas adventure that St Catherine’s has hosted. The local hospice is hoping to raise more than £100,000 in the incredible challenge at one of the seven wonders of the world.

As part of their training and to celebrate Chinese New Year, the group tackled a two day training walk over the South Downs last weekend.

Each trekker needs to raise at least £3,300 sponsorship but as they start the trip’s final countdown many of them have already smashed their target.

Mel Waghorn from Horley, is just one of the trekkers. She said: “It was a challenging but enjoyable training walk, with the group walking 24 miles in two days. It showed us how important it is to get the miles in our walking boots before we head off in May, and helped remind us that the official countdown really has begun! I’m looking forward to more training walks over the next few weeks, and I can’t wait to set off with

The Great Wall of China Trek will take St Catherine’s challengers to a remote section of the Great Wall. They will trek from Gubeikou to Simatai, on the wall itself, before venturing through wild and remote landscapes in aid of the hospice.

Michaela Clements, Event Fundraiser at St Catherine’s will be with the trekkers every step of the way. She said: “We’re so grateful to our 34 fantastic China

Trekkers. They’re pushing themselves to their limits in this incredible challenge. Their efforts will make a big difference to local terminally ill people when it’s needed most and the money they raise will help us be there to offer expert care in future. At the moment, we can only care for one in three local people who need us. It’s vital we keep raising money so we can be there to care for everyone. I can’t wait to touch down in China and cheer on the trekkers during the challenge’s harder moments. Remembering exactly why we’re doing it will keep us all going!” If you would like to support St Catherine's China Trekkers, you can donate on their Just Giving page at: www.justgiving.com/campaigns/ charity/stcatherines/chinatrek2018 Feeling inspired? iewing the appearance of sprouting bulbs and leaves after a bleak winter is quite magical to nature lovers. The soil has been drained of all its goodness and, therefore, needs to be replenished with compost and fertilizers. Warming up the soil in advance, with fleece, plastic or glass, will help hardened off flower and vegetable plants to progress rapidly. If you are tempted to plant out bedding plants in a mild spell, always remember to have some form of insulation ready to protect the seedlings should temperatures dip. April is relatively a very busy time for gardeners and here are some of the important jobs to be undertaken: Bulbs • Sow Lily seeds and plant sprouting Lilies in pots without damaging the root structure • Summer flowering Gladiolus and Ranunculus could be planted out. Flowers • Deadhead Pansies, Primulas and spring bedding plants, only after they finish flowering. • Divide Hostas and in milder areas Dahlia tuberss can be planted out. • In hard-water areas, apply chelated (sequestered) iron to Azaleas, Pieris, Rhododendron and Skimmia plants. • Prune Forsythia and all old shoots of Penstemmon. • Mix the compost for hanging baskets with a slowrelease fertilizer and water-gel. Long life feed are also available.

Fruit • Protect fruit blossoms from late frosts, but remove cover in mild weather to encourage pollination. • Prune Fig trees and dis-bud established fan-trained Peaches. • Feed Citrus plants Greenhouse/ Houseplants • Sow seeds for Aubergines, Courgettes, Cucumbers, Marrows, Melons, Peppers, Pumpkins, Squashes and Tomatoes. • Pot up Begonias, Cyclamen and Gloxinias and stop Fuchsias. • Increase the watering of plants, including cacti and multiply stocks by propagation. Hedges, Shrubs, Trees and Climbers • Prune shrubs only after flowering and hoe around newly planted shrubs • Trees and Shrubs respond to a slow release feed and mulch • Look out for Aphids, Caterpillars and Red Spider Mite. Lawns • Sow seed or lay turves for a new lawn. • Rake out any moss and feed established lawns • Fences, Paths, Structures and Walls • Remove Algae and moss from paths and lay new decorative paths.

• Sow hardy annuals, herbs and wild flower seeds.

• Treat timber structures and check and repair Arbours, Arches and Pergolas.

• Ensure that all autumn grown Sweet Peas should be supported by wig-wams when transferred to the soil. Sweet Pea seeds can be grown outdoors.

Ponds • Remove blanket weed and divide water lilies.

• Feed plants with a liquid fertilizer. • Protect Delphiniums, Hosta, Lilies and tender new shoots from Slugs and Snails.

24

• Check wiring and clean fountain pump filters. • Remove netting to prevent snagging of plants. • Complete new pools

Live life in

colour

Caterham Valley is set to spring to life with vibrant colour this month. Caterham Valley For You manager Sue McGeown gives us an insight into what you can look forward to

I

n last month's column, I hinted at an exciting new initiative that's set to brighten up Caterham Valley during the Easter holidays – and I'm delighted that I can now finally reveal a little more about Colour Caterham. While certain elements of Caterham Valley For You's plans will have to remain under wraps until the launch (we want to keep an element of surprise!), shoppers will be greeted by colourful displays to launch Caterham Valley into spring. For a couple of weeks from Thursday March 29, expect handmade craft work popping up around the town and trees decorated with pompoms. We're also really excited to be getting local schools involved, including St John's, Hillcroft, Oakhyrst Grange, St Peter and St Paul and Caterham Children’s Centre. Their children have been busy creating vibrant artworks, which will be displayed in the

windows of shops and businesses in the Valley. The community is also being invited to have a hand in colouring Caterham. Jodie Green, owner of Caterham Galleries in Godstone Road, will be turning the shop’s outside wall into a giant canvas and encouraging people to come along and leave their handprint. You will have a chance to leave your paint handprint on their wall on Easter Saturday, March

31, between 10am and 1pm, and Friday April 6, between 10am and 1pm. Cheerful paint colours, plus gloves, will be provided. It is dependent on weather, of course, so keep an eye on our website for updates – and please make a wish for sunshine! Easter Saturday is looking like a busy day in the Valley as Church Walk Shopping Centre will be hosting free Easter activities, from 11am to 3pm. Kids will be able to decorate their own egg to take home or

make their own Easter bonnet, as well as enjoy face painting and music. At 2.30pm, Church Walk's annual Easter bonnet parade will take place with a prize for the best hat. Colour Caterham's launch also coincides with Tandridge Art Society’s annual exhibition, which takes place in Soper Hall over the Easter weekend, and we look forward to shining a

light on the more artistic side of our town, both online and on the ground.

Until next time, Sue

Once the initiative comes to a close, Caterham Valley will quickly return to its more regular day-to-day decor, so do make sure you pop into town (hopefully wearing your brightest clothes and biggest smiles!) and enjoy the sights while they're there.

Pet Obesity article by Sarah Connell-Sait RVN

This month, veterinary nurse Sarah Connell-Sait looks at the growing problem of pet obesity.

M

ost vets and vet nurses agree that obesity is currently the biggest health and welfare concern for pets in the UK, and the problem is getting worse. It’s important to recognise when your pet is beginning to gain weight as early as possible, to avoid the health risks associated with obesity. Weighing your pet regularly is a great way of identifying any changes quickly. You can also monitor your pet’s body condition by feeling the spine and ribs; if you have to press down in order to feel them, it’s likely your pet is carrying a bit too much extra weight. Just like humans, overweight pets are more susceptible to various diseases such as osteoarthritis, diabetes, breathing problems and heart disease. They are also likely to tire more quickly and move around more slowly; reduced exercise then exacerbates the problem. Generally, overweight pets have a reduced quality of life compared with pets of a healthy weight. If overweight, it’s best to address your pet’s diet first. It’s important for pets to be fed a complete diet; commercial diets are highly recommended. All of these diets The Link

have a feeding guide on the back of the packaging, providing a suitable amount to feed. It is important to stick to this amount, and weigh out the food every time before feeding it, to ensure accuracy; a few extra biscuits make a big difference! If this doesn’t help your pet lose weight, you can try decreasing the amount you feed by 20% or switching over to a reduced calorie, or ‘light’ diet, designed specifically for overweight pets. It’s really important not to over feed your pet with treats. Dental chews for dogs also contain lots of calories, so it is best to switch

over to a rubber or plastic dental bone chew or try brushing your pet’s teeth instead. Increasing exercise also helps to maintain a healthy weight, so walking your dog for an extra 20 minutes a day or encouraging your cats to play with a fishing rod style toy every evening may help to shed the pounds. If you need help or advice to reduce your pet’s weight, contact your vet surgery. Most vet surgeries run weight clinics, which you can attend on a regular basis, get your pet weighed, and get advice from a vet or nurse.

DEFIBRILLATOR FOR KENLEY

A

defibrillator, purchased through monies raised at a fund-raising event, together with generous donations and a community donation from the Co-op, has now been installed on the front of the Kenley Memorial Hall building for use by the Kenley and wider community. Comment from a London Ambulance ‘First Responder‘, "This is fabulous news. I would like to reassure everyone that defibrillators are completely safe to use without any training at all. They will not work unless the patient is in cardiac arrest. If you were to place the pads on someone who did not require them then the unit would not allow you to continue. There are voice prompts that will guide you how to use the device. They really are a fabulous piece of equipment and have saved many lives."

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Tying up Plants in Your Garden

N

ow is the time of year when things are growing well and before they flower, ideally they need to be staked. For example, plants such as peonies, which have a large flower head and are likely to flop over, either damaging the plant or dragging the blooms along the ground so they can’t be seen or allowing them to be eaten by slugs. There are various ways of tying up plants, depending on what type of

36

garden you have. Bamboo canes are the most obvious option, but if you have a large area of something like philadelphus, using bamboo canes for each stem can become a bit of an eyesore. What I recommend is, well before they are a foot high, put in a frame work which they can grow through. This allows the stems to be supported at a set height so they carry on growing past the support, allows the support to be out of view and the plants to shown off to their best advantage.

If it is a very traditional cottage garden and you have a supply of willow, you can weave yourself a miniature fence that helps to support your plants, and which would be more in keeping with the garden. The other advantage of putting in a small willow fence is that you can use it as an edging to your boarder and keep the plants off the lawn. You could also put in place two strong hazel posts and tie some twine between them, across which the plants can be draped. This would allow you to make the support more of a feature, rather than trying to hide it. Nowadays you can get blacksmiths to make up all kinds of metal framework. These can be very elaborate with decorations such as leaves and vines, to make a structural piece which can stay out in the garden all year and give you a focal point in the winter. They cost a lot more money but they offer different aspects in the garden when the plants have died back. You can get most blacksmiths to make these to design, or you can pick them up

from garden centres. I often look at what I want, then visit the shops at the end of the growing season and pick them up in the sales ready for the following year. There are companies that make hoops or interlocking wire supports. They are usually painted green so they can’t be seen and are really good for disguising supports whilst growing your plants to set heights. Usually you can buy these at garden centres on deals, because buying a lot of them can get quite expensive. It is important to know before you go to the garden centres what kind of plants you need to support so you can buy the correct heights and numbers.

to stop it twisting or the head snapping off. Make sure when you are tying in that you use the right kind of ties. Herbaceous plants need herbaceous green twine. It is very strong but doesn’t last very long. For a more permanent support, wire is not always a suitable option. This is because it can dig into the stem causing a weak point which can snap later on. It also gives an opportunity for disease to get into the plant. The support needs to be tight enough to stop the plant from rocking around in the wind and causing damage to the plant. Happy tying in everyone!

There are times where you might not need these types of structures, for example if you have a wall which your plants are falling away from. In this situation you could put in some vine eyes and a wire along the wall, tie the plants to this, hiding the ties behind the plants and keeping them still upright. Make sure you choose the right sort of support for the plant: for example a rose would need a small tree stake or a rose stake long enough to support the blooms and the plant in high winds. Often the majority of damage done to plants is in high winds so care needs to be taken that they will be protected. If a plant has a very straight stem this needs to be supported all the way up If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. taly is known for producing numerous products of highquality. Italian designer fashions and cars are very much recognised and sought-after, globally. Many visitors return regularly to Italy, for the enjoyment of beautiful landscapes and coastal areas, plus explorations of Italy’s history and cultural heritage. There are many more attractions and qualities the country has to offer, including very impressive glassware, porcelain, lace and furniture, plus wonderful cuisine and wines, for example. Giacomo Casanova lived during the 18th century. Born 2nd April 1725, in Venice, he lived for 73 years. During his life, the legendary Giacomo Casanova was an adventurer, poet, musician, writer and spy, amongst his many attributes, as well as being renowned for his encounters with females. Entering the University of Padua, at twelve years of age, Casanova graduated at age seventeen with a degree in law and constantly searched to satisfy his desires for love and lust.

During the early part of the 21st century Carlo Parodi envisaged the creation of a Museum & Experience, to offer everyone the opportunity to learn and discover about the life of Giacomo Casanova. Carlo Parodi, founder of Giacomo Casanova Limited and the Giacomo Casanova Foundation works tirelessly, along with professionals, that include university professors, plus many other knowledgeable and skilled personnel and has created the Museum & Experience, for all to enjoy. The first Giacomo Casanova Museum is located in Venice. As well as the very interesting memorabilia, which includes paintings and artefacts from Casanova’s life and times, modern technology and multimedia inclusions allow visitors, of all ages, to engage in and discover – the world of this charismatic man. The romances of Giacomo Casanova, plus the styles and ways of life, of that era, hold much interest and fascination, evoking and satisfying curiosity and intrigue.

Wedded Bliss . . . ?? A young couple got married and went on a cruise for their honeymoon. When they got back home the bride immediately called her mother, who lived three hours away. “Well, darling,” said her mother, “How was your honeymoon?” “It was wonderful, and so romantic. We had a great time,” said the bride, "but as soon as we got home he started using really horrible language. Words I have never heard before. Really horrible four-letter words! You’ve got to come get me …PLEASE.” Then the bride began to sob over the phone. “PLEASE, mum come get me!” begged the bride.

Dave says "I felt this was an image just waiting to be taken, I was lucky enough to be there just as the top was being lowered onto “The Gerkin”. However, it has always puzzled me how they got the actual gerkin inside . . . " They say the camera never lies but you can tell a good story with enough images and the skill to manipulate them!

“But darling what did he say, what four-letter words, you have to tell me what’s troubling you,” said her mother. Still sobbing the bride said to her mother, “Words like …. DUST, IRON, COOK, WASH!”

***** A husband and wife are on the 9th green when suddenly she collapses from a heart attack! "Help me dear," she groans to her husband. The husband calls 999 on his mobile, talks for a few minutes, then picks up his putter and lines up his putt. His wife raises her head off the green and stares at him. "I'm dying over here and you're putting?" "Don't worry dear," says the husband calmly, "they found a doctor on the second hole and he's coming to help you." "Well, how long will it take for him to get here?" she asks feebly. "No time at all," says her husband. "Everybody's already agreed to let him play through."

***** At a wedding ceremony the pastor asked, ''If anyone has anything to say concerning the union of the bride and groom, speak now, or forever hold your peace'' The moment of utter silence was broken by a young, beautiful woman carrying a child. She stood up and started walking slowly towards the pastor. Everything quickly turned to chaos. The bride threw the bouquet at the groom, then burst out crying. The groom's mother fainted. The groomsmen started giving each other looks, wondering how best to help save the situation. The pastor asked the woman, "Can you tell us, why you came forward? What do you have to say?" There was absolute silence in the church. Then the woman replied, "We can't hear you in the back row."

Caterham Rotary Clubs support for the Community

A

local learning facility and a leading children’s hospice charity have both benefited recently from financial support from the two Rotary Clubs of Caterham.

Bletchingley Skills Centre is a charity based in Stychens Lane and was formed in 1989 with the goal of providing adult education classes for disabled people. The main aim of the Skills Centre today is to provide training courses, support and information for both disabled and non-disabled adults and to help them develop their potential, whether by improving their skills or helping in such areas as self-confidence. Courses offered include computing for the visually impaired, numeracy, literacy, cookery, crafts and exercise. The courses help individuals to become more independent and learn skills to enable them to seek employment, both paid or voluntary. There are currently 70 people from local areas that are attending the courses on a weekly basis. A presentation was held at The Surrey National Golf Club in early February and Chairman of Tandridge District Council Gill Black accepted cheques from both Presidents Andy Parr and

50

Graham Woodcock as Bletchingley Skills Centre is her chosen charity during her year in office. Gill Black commented afterwards “I cannot thank the two Rotary Clubs enough for their fantastic donation to my chosen charity, the Bletchingley Skill Centre. Rotary have had a great connection in the past with the Skill Centre and it’s the hard work and dedication of their members that keep charities like mine going.” The Shooting Star Chase provide support to families in London and Surrey of terminally ill children with a range of nursing practical, emotional and medical care. They are one of Caterham School’s chosen charities for this year. In recognition of the student support given to the Rotary Clubs last Christmas during their house to house collection a cheque presentation was held in the beautiful surroundings of the Wilberforce Hall at Caterham School where 40 students and staff attended a reception together with Georgina Brookes of Shooting Star Chase and the Rotary Presidents. Richard Stamper of Caterham School who masterminded the Fifth and Sixth Form student volunteers said: “It never fails to amaze me that the students are so happy to leave their warm homes and warm boarding houses to help Rotary collect donations.
