Hello Readers... Welcome to the October issue of the Ledbury Focus. By now the children are all back at school, and we are now in the downhill run to Christmas – and I’m going to say it again: where has this year gone! It seems no time at all that we were all sweltering through the heat of summer, and today I’m looking out at a crisp, blue autumn sky, a slight breeze blowing through the grapevine and apple trees outside my window.

oes someone close to you need a little help? Is there a relative or loved one that you wish you could be there for but simply don’t have the time? If you need some reassurance that those you love are being cared for and looked after, then Companions could provide just the service you need. We all wish we could spend more time with our parents, grandparents and senior friends but this is not always possible. Companions offer a service that will reassure you that those in need are being well cared for when you can’t be around yourself. Whether it is to help buy the shopping, to get out of the house, or simply as someone to be there and spend some time with your loved one, Companions is here to help. Companions offer care primarily, although not exclusively, to elderly members of the community and will visit at their house or care home as needed. As many elderly people live alone or are retired, there can often be many hours in the day that need filling and often a friendly face and a cheery conversation can make all the difference. Companions are a local company who are able to tailor their hours to suit your relative or loved one. They have plenty of experience and first-hand knowledge in being able to provide the right care. They are also trained in caring for those with dementia. Companions offer hourly rates and flexible timings with extra charges at weekends, overnight and bank holidays. Transport is charged at a standard fee.

Home Energy & Benefit Checks

P

eople in Herefordshire face multiple challenges and barriers to maintaining their health and well-being, and dealing with fuel poverty. Financial pressures associated with living in rural areas, such as costs for transport and domestic heating, mean some households spend more to achieve the same standards of living as equivalent households living in urban areas. Age UK Hereford & Localities is pleased to announce it will be working with Marches Energy Agency (MEA) to support older people to keep safe and warm by offering two free services. From October 2018 through to March 2019, we will be offering free home energy checks and free benefit checks. Ledbury Focus

Home Energy Checks: MEA will be carrying out the home energy checks. The aim is to provide practical energy efficiency information and expert advice to older people. The project will enable older people to change their energy use behaviour and benefit from small practical measures which could potentially reduce their energy bills whilst remaining warm and well. Home energy checks will include: r A thorough assessment of the clients circumstances, usage of energy, hot water system and insulation. r Give basic advice on how to keep warm and save energy. r Supply and install simple energy efficiency measures (draught excluders, letter box brushes, radiator foil, sockets timers and other items). r Help you to apply for Warm Homes Discount and the Priority Services Register.

r Review your energy tariff and payment method. Benefit Checks: Age UK Hereford & Localities will be offering free benefit checks. Our Information & Advice team will ensure that you are receiving all the benefits to which you are entitled and also review your current benefits, making sure that you are receiving the correct amounts. They will help with benefits such as Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payments, Carers Allowance, State Pension, Council Tax Benefit and Housing Benefit. For more information or to find out how you can arrange a free home energy check or benefit check, for yourself or someone you know, please contact us: telephone: 0333 0066 299 email: contact@ageukhl.org Registered Charity Number: 1093502

Ledbury Remembers, Ledbury Reflects

W

e are on the last lap as we get everything ready for Armistice Day. Poppies are being gathered in. Art and craft work is being prepared for display, posters are being designed, and with luck, there is not too much more to do. We have three meetings planned for October, all to be held at Studio Crafts in the Southend, with thanks once again, to Susan and Francis. The first meeting is on Monday 8th October, from 2.30 p.m. till 4 p.m. This will be our last planning meeting to finalise setting up, sorting out what help is needed and generally making sure everything is ready. We’ll then have two sewing bee sessions to make sure all the poppies are on tapes or cords that we can tie to railings. These will be on Monday 15th and Monday 29th October, from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. At the time of writing we don’t know yet how many poppies we will have, but it would be good if there were several of us at these meetings prepared to sew. Please bring your own, needle, thread and scissors if you can. We’ll have the tape. If you didn’t manage to deliver your poppies to the Library or to Bodkins, you can drop them in to Studio Crafts during our sewing bees on the 15th or 19th. We’ll be delighted to see you. Once again thank you to everyone who has made this project possible.

The Oak I

f anyone was to ask me what my favourite tree was I would immediately answer the silver birch, the lady of the forest. I have one with a weeping habit and the stance of a dancer swaying her hips to the rhythm of the seasons. She makes me smile every time I see her, with her purple hued canopy in winter and her silver laced stem. Yet this elegant beauty has a rival, an oak tree as sturdy and stout as the silver birch is elegant and delicate. My oak tree grows in an ancient hedge. For at least one hundred and fifty years it has defied the West winds and grown straight and tall making a perfect domed shape. I admire this tree; to stand unbowed by the elements for so long is an achievement worthy of any of this species. I often sit beneath my oak, a mighty friend shading me from the heat of the day. Looking up into its Ledbury Focus

branches I marvel at the life it supports there and how much of our history has been built on the timbers of oak. Ships - it took two thousand trees to build one 74-gun warship - buildings, tanning, once a thriving industry in Ledbury, all relied on oak trees. Even a King is reputed to have hidden in an oak. Such was the demand for their timber and bark that by the 1660’s there were only two hundred oaks left in the Forest of Dean. There is more to an oak tree than merely adding to the bucolic British scenery. Above my head a whole world exists of which I have little or no knowledge. This foliage universe carries on its daily life completely oblivious of my existence; it neither needs, nor knows of humanity. Hundreds of different types of insects live on every part of an oak. Other insects feed on them or the fungi and lichen which depend on

oakwood. These insects are themselves preyed upon by robins, tits, tree-creepers and other small birds. Squirrels and jays feed on and store the acorns. Varieties of wasps make oak apples. Aphids, leaf minors, moths, caterpillars and bark beetles, and many more, all rely on oak trees. A whole ecosystem exists from roots to canopy. Nineteen pests and diseases are attacking our native trees, including acute oak decline. This is due, in part, to the increased global trading in plants. Gardeners can help by either growing from seed or buying plants cultivated in this country. Trees are vital; they clean air and water, provide food and fuel and give homes for wildlife. They give us oxygen, store carbon. We need them, lets protect them. article & photograph by Geraldine Woods-Humphery

Annual MOT for Rabbits

M

ost people think that rabbits are easy pets to look after, but actually there are numerous problems which affect rabbits. Many of these are preventable with regular checks and can be treated if noticed early. Wild rabbits are used to surviving on grass alone and don’t have the luxury of concentrate feeds. Grass is a high fibre, low calorie food which wild rabbits graze on for large parts of the day. Diets for captive rabbits should try to mimic the wild diet as much as possible to keep them healthy. All rabbits should have constant access to hay as this makes up the bulk of their required food. Rabbits should not be fed more than about one tablespoon of commercial rabbit food a day and muesli should be avoided, since rabbits will selectively feed and muesli has been linked to an increased risk of dental disease.

It is much better to give about a tablespoon of pelleted food rather than muesli-style food to prevent selective feeding. You can also give a handful of some greens e.g cabbage, broccoli and kale in addition to commercial pellets. Treats should be avoided as these are bad for the teeth; Ledbury Focus

small quantities of carrots and apples are quite acceptable. Rabbits’ teeth are constantly growing. In the wild eating grass has the effect of wearing away teeth at a constant rate and preventing dental problems. Pet rabbits can develop dental problems if not fed properly. Spurs can grow on the molars, causing ulceration in the mouth, which is painful to the rabbit and can stop them eating. If a rabbit has a painful mouth it may also stop grooming itself. A common sign of dental problems

is fur matted with faeces around the back end. If this is left unchecked and not cleaned then fly strike may develop. This is a potentially lethal condition where maggots eat away at the back end of the rabbit and is both painful and a route for infection to enter. If you suspect this please contact us as soon as possible for advice on treatment. With myxomatosis so prevalent in wild rabbits it is very important to keep up to date with vaccinations, which is also a great opportunity to have your rabbit checked over.

The Memory Man

A scouser, on holiday in a remote Arizona frontier type town, walks into a bar. He orders his drink and sits down at the bar when he notices a native American Indian, dressed in full regalia, feathered head dress, tomahawk, spear, the lot, sitting in the corner under a sign saying 'Ask me anything'

The scouser is intrigued and asks the barman about him. 'Oh, we call him the memory man. He knows everything.' says the barman. 'What do you mean he knows everything?' asks the scouser. 'Well, he knows every fact there is to know and he never, ever forgets anything.' 'Yeah right' says the scouser. 'If you don't believe me, try him out. Ask him anything, and he'll know the answer' 'Alright' says the Scouser and walks up to the Memory Man, and asks, 'Where am I from?' 'Knotty Ash, Liverpool, England ' says the Red Indian. 'Alright' says the scouser, 'that was easy - you probably recognised my accent. Who won the 1965 FA Cup Final?' 'Liverpool' says the memory man quick as a flash. 'Yes, and who did they play?' 'Leeds United' again without blinking

'And the score?' '2-1' says the memory man without hesitation. 'Pretty good, but I bet you don't know who scored the winning goal?' 'Ian St John' says the memory man in an instant. Flabbergasted the tourist continues on his holiday and on his return to Birkenhead tells all and sundry about the amazing Memory Man. He just can't get him out of his mind and so he vows to return and find him again and pay him his due respect . He saves his money for years and finally twelve years later he has saved enough and returns to the states in search of the Memory Man. He searches high and low for him, and finally finds him sitting in a cave in the mountains, older, greyer and more wrinkled than before but still resplendent in his warpaint and full regalia. The scouser, duly humbled approaches him and decides to greet him in the traditional manner. He bows low, and says 'How'. The memory man squints at the scouser and replies, 'Flying header in the six yard box.'

Creating Your Garden Paradise ĂƌƟĐůĞ ďLJ :ŽŶĂƚŚĂŶ ŝƐŚŽƉ

Dividing Herbaceous Plants

I

t’s the end of the year, and the time has come to look at your herbaceous beds. Because of the weather we have had through the spring and summer this year, some herbaceous plants have grown really well, whilst others, that are somewhat leafier, have suffered because of the long dry spell.

flower less because they don’t need to flower), this means the plants are dividing under the ground: the bigger the clump the less need there is to put on flowers, which takes up quite a lot of energy. As long as it knows it is multiplying somehow, by seed or by clump forming from the root, the plant naturally slows up its flower production.

a big plastic sheet, put it by the side of your bed and literally take out every clump you can. The reason for doing this at this time of year is because herbaceous plants die right down to ground level, and you will still have the dead stems from this past flowering season and the leaves to be able to identify what each plant is. I would also suggest photographing the garden if you want the plants to go back into the same locations. If you have two varieties: a dwarf and a larger variety of something, avoid getting them mixed up on the sheet so as not to put the smaller plants at the back of the border. It is also a good idea to mark colours - just put a tag with a bit of string round the clump, possibly naming what it is, or the flower combination, so that you avoid mixing them up and possibly putting the wrong things next to each other when it comes to replanting them.

The best way of digging them up is with a fork - not with a spade If you are starting to get very because you can easily chop If you have a big cottage garden large clumps in the garden with through the roots. Some or border that holds a lot of depleted flowers (herbaceous herbaceous plants have bulbous shrubs and a lot of herbaceous plants that spur from the roots roots where a lot of the energy is plants, then this is the time to get get very clump forming and stored and if you slice through To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk 28

and leave bits of root in the ground, these will form plants that will pop up later, where you aren’t expecting them to grow or planning for them. If the clumps are approximately two foot wide, in order to lift them up you might need two forks to get them lifted and onto the plastic sheet. If the clump is too big to lift then get a spade and divide it into four, or use the back of two forks if it is a very fibrous root, to pull the clumps apart. Which process of lifting you need to adopt will depend on what type of herbaceous plant it is. There are some herbaceous plants with very matted and strong roots and the only way to divide those is to get an old hand saw and cut them down. You will discover that using a spade is difficult to cut through very fibrous roots. If the plastic sheet is roughly the

same size as the border, you can then map on the plastic sheet where you want the plants to go. Certainly if there are shrubs in the bed or you are doing it in more than one stage, the other advantage of the plastic sheet (if it is big enough) is you can fold it over the herbaceous plants at the end of the day and it will keep the clumps moist - you can sprinkle them with water and they will be happy until the following day, so it doesn’t all have to be done in one day. The plants will survive quite happily out of the ground provided they are kept moist and not left out in direct sunlight. Once you have mapped everything out and you have cut the big clumps into four, ideally you want to be putting two of those clumps back and possibly giving the other two clumps away, possibly to a garden fete, etc. What you don’t want is anything really prolific being put

back in as four clumps because they will get just as thick throughout the growing season and will eventually strangle your other, more delicate, herbaceous plants. You will then end up with one particular rampant plant having taken over, like Crocosmia. Finally, you have planted up, you have heeled in and you have dug over the bed. Obviously, when you have got stuff out, it is now the time to spray for weeds, etc. If you have a very prolific weed and indeed if there are weeds growing through the clumps, you can wash all the roots off and get all of the unwanted weed roots out. Once you have planted back in, I would not recommend feeding in any way because if we get a very warm autumn it will encourage early sprouting and the young shoots will be attacked by frosts; obviously we want them to send out shoot naturally in the autumn.

If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. Bromsberrow Heath Dog Show

C

elebrity film star, Miss Elizabeth Hurley, was gracious and glamourous in equal measure when she attended the Bromsberrow Heath Family Fun Dog Show, staying for about an hour and chatting to villagers and their pets. A known animal lover, Miss Hurley brought along her lovely spaniel, Mia, whom she entered into the "Dog I'd like most to take home" category; Mia achieved second place, pipped at the post by Ffion, a Welsh Spaniel. Miss Hurley wore denim blue jeans, ankle boots and a fitted country style jacket, and happily posed for pictures with those present, including the High Sheriff, Charles Martell (manufacturer of the famous Stinking Bishop Cheese). The annual fun dog show in the rural village of Bromsberrow Heath at the community shop, was presided over by Andrew Elliott, the auctioneer from Brightwells Auction House. Andrew kept the audience amused and entertained, giving his time free for the afternoon. Volunteer at the shop, Jan Long, said "We were all delighted to see Miss Hurley at the show, who entered into the spirit of the occasion by bringing along her gorgeous spaniel. Miss Hurley was utterly charming and simply lovely, and we are very grateful to her for finding time in her busy schedule to join the fun and hand out the prize rosettes. The best in show went to Paige Brown with her beautiful whippet named Fizzy! article & photos by Jan Long photos: Miss Hurley with Andrew Elliott and other show entrants; Paige Brown with Fizzy and Andrew Elliott; Miss Hurley with her spaniel, Mia; with Andrew Elliott, presenting prize to Noel Roberts (in the hat); with Charles Martell, High Sheriff

What at to see this month Woodlands are full of wonderful colour in autumn and as Herefordshire is the most wooded county in the West Midlands it’s a wonderful place to explore at this time of year. Queenswood Country Park and Arboretum showcases a stunning array of autumnal shades with trees from around the globe – look out for the maples in particular. Our own native woodlands are just as glorious though. As well as soaking up the dazzling colour, look out for autumn fruits and berries too from spiky chestnuts to bright rowan berries.

Herefordshire Wildlife Trust's Guide to a

Wild October! 38

Many species are busy foraging this month while food is abundant. Hedgerows and woodlands will be alive with birds such as flocks of long-tail tits while ivy flowers are a-buzz with hoverflies, wasps, honey bees, and the last red admiral of the season.

What to do this month Orchard harvests Though many Herefordshire orchards have been grubbed up over past decades, there are still many remaining and at this time of year they are laden with fruit. If you have fruit trees or an orchard of your own, it’s time to get busy picking and pressing juice or making jams. If not, there are plenty of events happening around the county to get involved in or simply enjoy the sights and smells on a country walk.

Antique Chinese Plate S

miths had just closed the doors for entries to their antiques and collectors sale on the 31st August when they took a call from an elderly lady in Ledbury who wished to enter an antique Chinese plate in the sale. The August sale had a special section for oriental items and so it was obvious that the plate (which sounded interesting) could not be left until a later date.

seemed to do the trick nicely. The dish was valued (carefully) on the pub table and our consultant decided it was a very nice example of a 13th century Chinese Longouan plate from the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368). The dish was in remarkably good condition and on the day it sold for £1,300 to a European buyer from Birmingham against telephone and online bidders from London and China.

Luckily Ledbury is not far from Newent and the plate was duly collected and found to be an early Chinese celadon dish with attractive incised floral decoration. It had been assessed some years previously by Sotheby’s who felt it was 14th century and more recently by Henry Sandon who preferred to think it was 12th century.

This was of course a satisfying end which justified a bit of last

minute running about and price of a pint of beer! Smiths next sale is on the 9th November and includes a special section for silver and jewellery (just in time for Christmas). The sale also includes a full range of antiques and collectables. Entries are invited on the 9th, 11th, 16th & 18th October 10am-3pm or by appointment. Please telephone 01531 821776 or visit www. smithsnewentauctions.co.uk for further information. article by Rita Kearsey

Unfortunately the oriental section had just been valued and catalogued the previous day by Smiths oriental consultant and so a favour needed to be called in to get the plate properly catalogued. It turned out the price for this favour was a drink in the consultant’s local pub and so an early evening meeting was arranged and a pint of beer

Success of Fun Filled Carnival

L

edbury’s annual carnival attracted huge numbers of spectators to watch the procession of lorries, handcarts and other vehicles all adorned with festival themes, that took the route from the Rugby Club to Ledbury Primary School. Densely packed crowds clapped and waved and threw money into the collecting buckets, all of which will go towards offsetting the costs involved in staging this popular event. Funfairs, live music, dancing, performers, food and drink were all in abundance during this fun filled day! article & photos by Jan Long

Effective Treatment for Fatigue by Helen Mawson, BSc Hons, DIpM, BTAA, BAUK, KFRP

W Contact me for more information I offer a free 15-minute telephone consultation so you can find out more about the therapies I practice and how they could help you.

Different types of fatigue There are different types of fatigue which are all experienced uniquely by the individual, this can be caused by many different things which will vary from person to person. This article discusses the more general fatigue that can be experienced from time to time. In practice I work with clients struggling with different levels of fatigue from complex down to more basic or shortterm issues. Symptoms of fatigue Obviously feeling tired a lot of the time is the major symptom of fatigue but there are several other symptoms that often go hand in hand with this. These can often indicate where the

r Neck and shoulder tension r Soreness in the triceps and quadriceps r Kidney pain r Poor assimilation of nutrients r Digestive problems r Breathing difficulties r Feeling low or overwhelmed How I work in practice to help fatigue problems I will often use a combination of the therapies that I practice in order to treat the fatigue problems that individuals are experiencing. More often than not I will use procedures from The Bowen Technique that address the

complex symptoms that an individual is experiencing. I take a detailed consultation from all clients which allows me to build a picture of what is going on and what has been experienced in the past that may be contributing to what is been presented. Trauma caused by stressful events whether physical or emotional can often contribute to symptoms of fatigue. Trauma becomes locked into the body at a cellular level which will often produce complex symptoms. I have found that working with Bowen seems to work well to release these memories and patterns that can be causing problems, sometimes even years after the event. I may also offer advice and test clients for specific remedies and nutritional supplements that could help with the symptoms that they are experiencing. I will also most likely recommend self-help techniques that clients can use for themselves on a daily basis to help ease their symptoms. Self-help tips to help with fatigue The technique discussed below helps the body deal with stress, which will in turn have a positive impact upon fatigue along with its causes and symptoms. De-stress points The de-stress points are located on the forehead and the middle of the head. When these points are held, the stress response is diluted. These points are physiologically wired into our stress and fear response and when held help reduce anxiety and fear. De-stress Technique r The first points are located on the forehead about a thumb width from the hair-line on most people you will feel a bump on either side of your forehead. The second point is located on the midline of your head on your crown. If you are finding it difficult to locate

Ledbury Focus

these points, simply put your head in your hands by placing your palms on the forehead and hold your head. r While holding these points or with your head, in your hands, you need to think about the stress that you are facing i.e. the situation that has occurred or that is yet to occur. It is useful to get as stressed, upset or wound up as is possible while holding the points so it can diffuse as much of the tension as possible. Nutrition One of the minerals that come up most of the time when we are looking at fatigue is magnesium. It is so important for a variety of issues but is par excellence for treating symptoms of fatigue. Lots of people are deficient in this vital mineral due to it been farmed out of our soil. Other supplements that often come up when I test people include: B vitamins, Vitamin D and Iron. Useful remedies Some remedies that can be used for fatigue include: r Phosphoricum Acidum - A homeopathic remedy that is often used in cases of extreme fatigue, often after a big life event or change. r Kali Phos – Taken in tissue salt form is an excellent remedy for mental and nervous exhaustion. r Rescue remedy / 5 flower remedy – This is a great remedy to have in your medicine cupboard or handbag. It is a combination of 5 of the Bach flower remedies and can be used for many things including the issues surrounding fatigue. NB: as with all remedies it is best to check with your healthcare provider before starting taking them. I will test individuals for the specific remedy that fits their symptoms and personal constitution.

A Fitting Tribute to Our Troops I

'm sure we can all remember in 2014, the poppy display at the Tower of London, which marked one hundred years since the first full day of Britain's involvement in the First World War. The display was created by artists Paul Cummins and Tom Piper, and was the magical sight with 888,246 ceramic poppies for all to see. It took 300 people a year to make the ceramic poppies. The Beefeaters counted every poppy as every lost soldier had to be represented. Each Poppy had six petals, one for each of the six charities to be supported with money raised from selling the poppies to the public.

now touring the country until the end of November 2018, when both displays will become part of the Imperial War Museums' collection. ÂŁ9.5 million, was raised and distributed between six service charities, and by the time the last flower left the Tower five million people had viewed the display. I went along with friends to see The Weeping Window, when it was displayed at Hereford Cathedral and it was truly amazing. Each poppy represented a soldier, and they seemed to flow, like blood pouring out of the Cathedral window. As I looked out onto the sea of red, I felt over-whelmed by the thought of so many people sacrificing themselves for what we have now.

display will have visited Hereford Cathedral, Carlisle Castle, and Middle Port Pottery, Stoke on Trent. The Wave display will visit Royal Armouries, Fort Nelson and IWN North Manchester, until they reach their final destinations at the Imperial War Museums in London and Manchester. Whichford Pottery were very proud to make 97,000 of the poppies for the big display, and as time ran out, two other additional ceramic factories, one in Stoke-on-Trent and another in Warwickshire were drafted in to help complete the total of 888,246 poppies.

The Blocks of terracotta clay were When the display was removed two of sliced with a bow saw and pressed into the most dramatic sculptures, 'The 4mm sheets in an electronic rolling Wave' and 'The Weeping Window', machine. then those underneath moulded and shaped to give each unique flower a more realistic look. Hundreds of clay flowers were left on racks for 24 hours to harden, then put into a kiln for up to eight hours where they were fired up to 1,000°C. The flowers were then dipped twice into a scarlet glaze, a base coat and a top coat, and returned to the kiln where they were heated to 1,117°C. Lastly, the finished works of art were fitted to metal stalks. The flowers were then counted by the Beef Eaters, one for each soldier that lost his life fighting for our country. The end result was so movingly beautiful. The poppies that were sold to the public have travelled the world reaching as far as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Dubai, Brazil and Malaysia, in addition to France and Belgium where they have been placed on war graves in remembrance of those who lost their lives. There have been many requests to purchase poppies but sadly none are left for sale. If you would like to make any enquires about the poppies the website is: 1418now.org. uk, or why not go along and see both 'The Wave' and 'The Weeping Window' at their final destinations in The Imperial War Museums in London and Manchester. What a tribute to our wonderful soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom. article and photographs by Pamela Green

'HMRC' SCAM CALLS RECEIVED BY LEDBURY RESIDENTS Ledbury SNT is reminding people to remain vigilant, after receiving a number of reports of scam telephone calls from residents. People have received calls claiming to be from HMRC, informing them that they owe several thousand pounds and face legal action if they do not pay. HMRC, banks and the police will never ring people in this manner or ask for personal or bank details over the phone. Action Fraud is warning people once again of scammers contacting victims claiming to be from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) that trick people into paying bogus debts and taxes using iTunes gift cards. Victims are being contacted in a variety of methods by fraudsters claiming to be from HMRC and are being told they owe an outstanding debt. In most cases they ask for payment in iTunes gift card voucher codes. Fraudsters like iTunes gift cards to collect money from victims because they can be easily redeemed and easily sold on. The scammers don't need the physical card to redeem the value and instead get victims to read out the serial code on the back over the phone. Methods fraudsters use Spoofed calls: Fraudsters cold call victims using a spoofed number and convince them that they owe unpaid tax to HMRC.

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

Voicemails: Fraudsters leave victims automated voicemails saying that they owe HMRC unpaid taxes. When victims call back on the number provided, they are told that there is a warrant out in their name and if they don't pay, the police will arrest them Text messages: They may also use text messages that ask victims to urgently call back on the number provided. How to protect yourself r HMRC will never use texts to tell you about a tax rebate or penalty or ever ask for payment in this way. r Telephone numbers and text messages can easily be spoofed. You should never trust the number you see on your telephones display. r If you receive a suspicious cold call, end it immediately. r If you have elderly friends or relatives who may be vulnerable to this scam, please talk to them and make them aware. Date for your diary Monday 29th October: Ledbury PACT meeting, 7.30pm Council offices. Got an issue in your neighbourhood? Come along and tell us about it HALLOWEEN ADVICE Halloween will soon be with us and along with it comes the tradition of 'trick or treating'. For many, especially those taking part, it's a great fun activity, but for others, who may not welcome numerous callers to their door, it can be a very unnerving and stressful time. If you are planning to go trick or treating, please follow these simple guidelines: r Adults should ALWAYS accompany young children - NEVER let youngsters go trick or treating on their own! r Do not knock on the doors of strangers - only visit the homes of people you know r NEVER accept an invitation to go inside a strangers home r Always keep to well lit areas; wear bright clothing, carry a torch and remember road safety r Unless pre-arranged, DO NOT visit elderly members of your community r Be careful not to frighten vulnerable people r Keep any tricks within the law. Mother of the Bride! Jennifer's wedding day was fast approaching. Nothing could dampen her excitement - not even her parent's nasty divorce.

Her mother had found the PERFECT dress to wear, and would be the best-dressed mother-ofthe-bride ever!

A week later, Jennifer was horrified to learn that her father's new, young wife had bought the exact same dress as her mother!

Absent without leave

Jennifer asked her father's new young wife to exchange it, but she refused. “Absolutely not! I look like a million bucks in this dress, and I'm wearing it, she replied. Jennifer told her mother who graciously said, ''Never mind sweetheart. I'll get another dress. After all, it's your special day.'' A few days later, they went shopping, and did find another gorgeous dress for her mother. When they stopped for lunch, Jennifer asked her mother, ''Aren't you going to return the other dress? You really don't have another occasion where you could wear it." Her mother just smiled and replied, ''Of course I do, dear . . . I'm wearing it to the rehearsal dinner the night BEFORE the wedding.''

The blonde took out an adjustable spanner from her bag, loosened a few bolts and laid the flagpole down. She got a tape measure out of her pocket, took a few measurements, and announced that it was 18 feet 6 inches. Then, she walked off. Sid said to Fred, 'Isn't that just like a blonde! We need the height, and she gives us the bloody length.'
