Hello Readers... Welcome to the May issue of the Ledbury Focus. As you know, recently there has been a growing amount of attention in the media about the over- use of plastics and the effect this is having on the environment. Following on from this, I have had a couple of enquiries from readers about whether or not this magazine, because of the glossy paper and laminated cover, is recyclable. So I decided to do a bit of research on this, and this is what I’ve discovered.

Ledbury Focus Publisher & Advertising Grapevine Publications (Worcestershire) Ltd 3 Rye Street • Birtsmorton • WR13 6AS Tel: 01684 833715  Mob: 07754 170286 info@grapevinepublications.co.uk www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

The way paper manufacturers achieve the gloss finish is through a finishing process which involves polishing the paper – in much the same way as you would polish a piece of wood to achieve a smooth shiny surface. The laminated cover is also produced in much the same way. A heavier grade of paper is put through a more intensive finishing process, which produces the smooth, very high gloss end-product.

Editor Betty-Ann Ambury betty@grapevinepublications.co.uk

Advertising & Editorial

I then looked at a number of websites – and checked with our printing company – and both the inner pages and the heavy duty cover are recyclable. The paper mills that waste paper goes to for recycling, put the paper through machines that are so efficient, that they can even remove staples and any other foreign objects that inadvertently find their way in with the paper.

So, in a nutshell – our magazines are 100% recyclable, including the high gloss cover, which means that you can dispose of them in your recycle bin with a clear conscience. And here’s a titbit you might find interesting: a large percentage of magazines are recycled into newsprint, so the copy of the Ledbury Focus you read today, could well be the newspaper you read next month!

he nervous system is complex and its balance is absolutely essential to our health and well-being. In this article, I share some information about the autonomic nervous system (ANS) what happens when it is out of balance, what happens when it is in balance and how you can keep it that way. The autonomic nervous system In brief, the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a control system that acts largely unconsciously and regulates bodily functions such as; heart rate, digestion, and respiratory rate. The ANS has three branches; parasympathetic nervous system, sympathetic nervous system and enteric nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system is concerned with resting, digesting, healing whilst the sympathetic nervous system is considered the flight-fight system. The enteric nervous system is a system of neurons that govern the gastrointestinal tract. When the nervous system is out of balance The nervous system adjusts and adapts as the body responds to the external and internal stimulus that it is presented with. For example; if you need to respond

to an urgent deadline at work your nervous system will be working in sympathetic state this state helps us get on with things and get things done. This is normal and generally, after the task is completed the nervous goes back into its sympathetic state. Problems start to arise however when a body starts to switch into parasympathetic more regularly and in some cases is in this state constantly. When this is the case symptoms will start to arise and these could include; Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Mental problems and issues, Digestive disturbances, Headaches, exhaustion, Sleep problems. Over time symptoms can worsen and may often lead to more serious problems What can trigger an imbalance Imbalance occurs when the nervous system is in one of the states inappropriately for an extended period of time. There are many situations that can trigger this occurrence and some of these include; • Physical exhaustion • Mental pressure • Emotional upset • Shock • Trauma • Stress • Noise

When the nervous system is in balance When our nervous system is working as it should we are constantly adapting to stimuli presented to us internally and externally. We are designed to do this and given the right circumstances and responses we do this extremely well. This balanced state is optimal for our health and wellbeing. How Bowen and Kinesiology work to balance the nervous system Often trauma is locked into the body at a cellular level. Bowen and Kinesiology seem to work really well at releasing these patterns of trauma even years after the original stressful event. Often after these patterns are released the body will change and healing can occur. Bowen works directly with the nervous system in that many of the Bowen moves are made along the erector spinae muscle which sits either side of the spine and has a direct link into the nervous system. Bowen puts the nervous system into parasympathetic state very quickly. This is why most people find the therapy deeply relaxing and is why the therapy is so effective, it literally switches our body into healing mode.

Self-help tips to balance the nervous system Remedies to balance • Rescue remedy / 5 flower remedy – This is a great remedy to have in your medicine cupboard or handbag. It is a combination of 5 of the Bach flower remedies and really does help to calm the nervous system. Use when you are feeling like you need some extra support or after a difficult situation. •

Mimulus – A Bach flower remedy used to treat fears, particularly fears of known things. This remedy is useful for things like upcoming exams, driving tests, meetings or any event that you fear.

Argent Nit – A homeopathic remedy that is used to treat apprehension and anxiety especially regarding an approaching event.

Aconite – A homoeopathic remedy that is excellent for intense fear, shock, and anxiety.

Routine to balance and calm the nervous system Take hold of your left deltoid with your right hand. Place your left hand on your right rib cage. Breathe deeply in and out x 3. Repeat this process the other way around by swapping hands.

Health Kinesiology aims to identify stressful patterns that are causing problems in the body and nervous system. Once these are identified I work to find the energetic circuits or meridians that are out of balance and apply techniques to correct the imbalance. I have found this system wonderfully efficient in dealing with problems, even those that have existed for a long period of time.

De-stress (AF/FE) points The de-stress points are located on the forehead and the middle of the head. When these points are held, the stress response is diluted. These points are physiologically wired into our stress and fear response and when held help reduce stress, anxiety, and fear. To download the De-stress technique visit my website or drop me a line.

Help yourself Book a treatment I generally use a combination of the therapies that I work with in practice in order to balance the body and nervous system. I may also offer advice and test clients for specific remedies and nutritional supplements that could help with the symptoms that they are experiencing. I will also most likely recommend self-help techniques that clients can use for themselves on a daily basis to help ease their symptoms.

For more downloads showing how you can balance yourself with simple 5-minute routines, visit my website www.complete-balance.co.uk

Fit for Life S

taying active, a balanced diet and looking after your mental wellbeing are key to enjoying later life. We all know that to maintain a healthy weight and help to prevent illness it’s important to eat well and take regular exercise. But looking after your mental wellbeing is just as important as it affects how you think and feel. So staying fit and healthy as you grow older means taking care of your body and your mind. Fitness – Just a small amount of extra activity can make a big difference • Finding something you enjoy means you’re more likely to do it regularly. • Chair-based exercises, which you can do sitting or holding on to a chair, can improve muscle strength and flexibility. • NHS Choices has suggested exercises if you’re looking for ideas. Visit www.nhs.uk and type in “exercises for older people”. • Contact Age UK Hereford & Ledbury Focus

Localities to find out about exercise classes in your area. • Try taking a brisk walk once you’ve completed a task where you’ve been sitting still. Fuel - It’s possible to eat healthily on a budget, especially if you plan your meals ahead • Stick to a shopping list so you buy only the items you need. • Cheaper supermarket own brands are a good bet, and remember that frozen and tinned vegetables count towards your five-a-day. • For fresh fruit and vegetables, it’s often better value to shop at your local green grocers or market. • Look for money-off coupons in magazines, newspapers and online. • Check for offers on storable food such as pasta, cereal and tinned food.

Focus – Understanding what can affect your mental wellbeing could help you understand your feelings and look after your physical health as well • Simply getting outside for a few minutes a day can improve your mood. Why not join a walking group where you can explore the local area and meet new people? • Be kind to yourself and have a treat from time to time. • Creating structure to your day can give your life meaning, but remember to take some time for yourself too and do the things that make you laugh and have fun. • Keeping in touch with friends helps us to relax and feel good about ourselves. So telephone friends or think about volunteering as a way to meet new people. If you would like to know more about volunteering opportunities or exercise classes in your community please contact Age UK Hereford & Localities: Telephone: 0333 0066 299 or email: contact@ageukhl.org

Ledbury Town Council creates living legacy to mark First World War Centenary

L

edbury Town Council is leading the way in Herefordshire as the first council in the county to dedicate outdoor recreational space for permanent protection, in memory of those who lost their lives during the First World War. Ledbury Town Council put forward The Recreation Ground, to be safeguarded with Fields in Trust as a Centenary Field. Fields in Trust Chief Executive Helen Griffiths commented: “I congratulate Ledbury Town Council for being the first authority in Herefordshire to dedicate a Centenary Field. The Recreation Ground is now included forever in our national programme to commemorate the centenary of World War I”.

16

The area was re-dedicated with a short service on Friday 23rd March.

Primary School, added to the poignancy of the occasion.

The ceremony was supported with a very good public attendance, and Civic dignitaries, which included, the High Sheriff of Herefordshire, Lady Jane Lisvane, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Herefordshire, Nathaniel Hone, Vice Chairman of Herefordshire Council, Councillor Phil Edwards, Mayor of Ledbury, Councillor Elaine Fieldhouse and Colonel Andy Taylor, OBE. Members and staff of Ledbury Town Council, Ledbury Royal British Legion, John Masefield High School, Ledbury Primary School and other community organisations also attended.

In 2014, Fields in Trust President, HRH The Duke of Cambridge, said: “The Centenary Fields programme aims to save in perpetuity scores of memorial spaces around the country. Each moment of play or leisure that takes place on a Memorial Field is, in a way, an act of remembrance”.

It was a very moving occasion, made more so by the reading of the 85 names of the fallen of Ledbury in the First World War. Sprigs of Rosemary for remembrance, planted by the children of Ledbury

***** LEDBURY TOWN COUNCIL OFFICE Ledbury Town Council would like to welcome two new members of staff: acting Town Clerk, Emma Thomas and Deputy Clerk, Jennifer Eva. ‘The Art of the Fifties’ A major exhibition and sale of original paintings, prints and posters Saturday 26th May - Sunday 3rd June 2018 Elmslie House 8 Avenue Road, Great Malvern, WR14 3AG

T

his free exhibition reviews the range of work produced in this crucial decade when British society made the transition from war to peace; through austerity to normality. British artists played an important role in post-war reconstruction promoting good design and greater access to art for all. The fifties saw a renewed emphasis on more everyday subjects such as interior, urban and industrial scenes. At the same time, developments in abstract art continued to blur the boundaries with the representational. The exhibition brings together over 50 fabrics, paintings, prints and posters from across Britain,

Europe and the United States. It includes such well-known artists as John Bratby, Fernand Leger and John Piper and the less well known - especially women artists - who have received little recognition. The exhibition will be held in the hall at Elmslie House, a restored and award-winning Grade II family home located in the centre of Great Malvern, close to the railway station. This free exhibition will be open daily from 10.30 am – 4.30 pm with late opening on Friday 1st June until 8 pm, but may be opened at other times by arrangement. A café will be available from 11 am offering light refreshments.

Does Your Dog Enjoy Travelling . . . or is it a nightmare? up with a sleepy dog which is unable to walk.

I

Although sedatives are very effective for travelling with your dog on long distances, we also recommend various feed additives, supplements and other products which often help - one of the more successful of which is 'Adaptil' previously known as DAP.

We cannot guarantee that a product is going to work, but we do have various sedatives and drugs that can help. The trouble with sedatives is that if you take your dog for a walk, you will end

Adaptil mimics the properties of natural calming pheromones and gives a sense of wellbeing and reassurance, thereby having a calming effect. The product is available in four forms: plug in, spray, tablets and collar. The collar form is the most effective when travelling with your dog as delivery of the pheromones is constant.

f your dog does enjoys travelling, then you are very lucky. Many dogs are very fearful of car journeys, and this can result in dribbling, vomiting, constant barking or attempting to destroy your car, which can be very stressful.

One of the most important things to be aware of when travelling with dogs in cars is the temperature of the car. When travelling most people have their air conditioning on or their windows open, and it is not a problem. However, please be aware that the temperature inside a parked car rises very quickly, even when parked in a shady

DIRTY OVEN Hate cleaning your oven? Then let us do it for you! spot. This is very stressful to dogs and is regarded as a criminal offence. Please also be aware that your dog legally has to be restrained in the car. This can be in the form of a dog crate (big enough for him/her to lie down), a dog guard to keep your dog in the boot or alternatively your dog could wear a harness, which is then attached to the seat belt on the back seat. You may also wish to take your dog abroad which is far easier than it used to be under the Pet Travel Scheme. It is simply a matter of microchipping and vaccinating your dog, and we can then issue a passport which is valid 21 days after the date of the rabies vaccination. Then you can simply take your pet to Europe, and visit a vet 24 to 72 hours before your return.

Rosamund Young : The Secret Life of Cows

A

uthor Rosamund Young's talk on The Secret Life of Cows was a sell out at the Master's House with extra chairs being found to accommodate the crowds. The evening, hosted by the Ledbury Library Development Group (LLDG) working in partnership with the Ledbury Food Group, provided the opportunity to hear Rosamund's story in her own words on how she became a best selling author, now published in several European languages, and her concerns and issues about the countryside.

Volunteers interested in helping with this should contact them via their website www. ledburyfoodgroup.org article & photos by Jan Long photos from top left: Rosamund with her book, Rosamund signing a book for a fan and Rosamund with Fran Holliday of the Ledbury Food Group

Rosamund's love of cows and their individual characters was matched by her concerns for sustainable farming practices and high standards of animal welfare. Her talked concluded with questions ranging from the age of her oldest cow, to how do you reduce the use of non-recyclable plastic in farming. The audience were delighted to hear she is already planning her next book. The Ledbury Food Group are planning their next photographic project around cows. 26

pprenticeships are an attractive option for employers of all sizes wanting to bring new talent into their organisation. Eastnor Pottery & The Flying Potter have employed apprentices as an effective way of growing their small and creative team. In this short article, Pottery directors Jon and Sarah Williams comment on the benefits of hiring an apprentice. “A few years ago the government offered training grants as an incentive to employers prepared to take on a young person or school leaver. Our small business was rapidly growing, and we were struggling to fulfil all the school and social engagement opportunities that were coming our way. Our practice is devoted to working with people of all ages and abilities, developing their creativity and

learning through working with clay. It’s very satisfying to see a person grow in confidence whilst gathering new skills. So, for us, recruiting an apprentice seemed the obvious solution to growing our workforce. That said, nurturing and training a young person takes a lot of time and investment and the decision to employ, was one we deliberated on for a long time. But by making a commitment and the promise of full or part time employment at the end of the qualification, we have been able to build up strong employee loyalty in our staff.

Although our second apprentice sought an alternative career outside the creative industries, Jack became a valued member of the team during his two years at the Pottery. He was greatly liked by our customers and became a proficient thrower of pots. Our current Community Arts Apprentices Aimee and Immy, have been with us just over six months and are coming along in leaps and bounds. The two girls started their creative journey

with us at the same time and both have different strengths. Working together, they have brought a new dynamic and energy to the team….and a lot of laughter too! They regularly work with customers on the potter’s wheel, as well as assisting with schools and groups in the wider community. We are totally sold on employing apprentices and we can’t foresee a time when we won’t be offering opportunities to young people.”

We hired our first apprentice, Ethan in 2013 and although his level 3 qualification lasted a year, we were able to offer him a fulltime job as a workshop facilitator – a position he held for a further three years. So inspired by his Eastnor Pottery experience, he’s now studying a BA Hons Ceramics course in Cardiff. He continues to work with us P/T in the holidays. Ledbury Focus

awthorn also goes by the name of ‘May’ and its delicate white flowers decorate the hedgerows this month. Both Common (Crataegus monogyna) and Midland (Crataegus laevigate) hawthorn grow across Herefordshire and are hard to tell apart – especially as the species can hybridise. For the eagle-eyed, the Midland hawthorn has less deeply cut leaves and blunter lobes and flowers slightly earlier.

42

Though the leaves and flowers are both edible, much care should be taken at this time of year not to disturb nesting birds if foraging in hedgerows. (It is also traditionally considered very bad luck to bring may blossom into the house.) The flowers are a good source of nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinating insects which are all now busy as the temperatures rise. Ponds are becoming alive with insect life and will hopefully be squirming with tadpoles by now too. Birdsong is at its peak at this time of year at dawn and dusk in particular, as birds declare their

territories through our woods and across our gardens. More migrant bird species are arriving in the UK, with flycatchers usually back in residence by May. Herefordshire is a stronghold for the pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) and the species has long been the emblem of the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust. Pied flycatchers are now on the UK conservation ‘red list’ meaning their population is declining and giving serious cause for concern. The Trust and its volunteers runs a nest box scheme on some of its nature reserves, collecting data to help us understand more about the bird and reasons for its declining numbers.

What to Do Set the alarm clock – its International Dawn Chorus Day on Sunday 6th May and you’ll need to be up as the light creeps in at 5am to experience the full magic! Woodlands or places with thick hedgerows and scrub are the best places to head for; try Wessington Pasture; Lea & Paget’s Wood or Brilley Green Dingle nature reserves (www. herefordshirewt.org/wildlife/reserves). Lots of butterflies will now be on the wing so why not head out on a butterfly safari on a still, sunny day? Look out for orange tips, brimstones, commas, peacocks and small tortoiseshells. A great place for butterfly-ing is Haugh Woods near Mordiford where butterflies sun themselves beside the wide grassy paths and you’ll find a ready-made butterfly trail to follow too. It’s really important to continue to feed your garden birds through the spring as they are working hard building nests, brooding and feeding chicks. Some birds will take food from you feeders to their young, others will tuck in themselves and forage for other food for chicks. You can find out more about what and when to feed your birds at www.vinehousefarm.co.uk . Ledbury Focus

Little Boudicca T

48

here is an old nest box on the wall of the house. For more years than I can remember it has been the nursery for countless blue tits and occasionally wrens. The appearance of parent birds with beaks full of grubs has often been the first indication of a new family. This year has been different. Back in February a new kid on the block turned up. A feisty female blue tit, crest up and wings spread, laid claim to the nest box, and woe betide any bird who dared to come within twenty feet of her chosen home. Many a battle took place and many aspiring home owners were sent packing. The word spread, this nest box is taken, and other claimants soon knew not to trifle with this Boudicca of blue tits. She never once let down her guard, patrolling her patch and keeping a watchful eye out for any bird daring to steal her nest box. The beast from the East arrived and snow blocked the entrance to the box. Not content to wait until it had thawed, my little Boudicca carefully removed each granule of snow until she could comfortably get inside. March, and serious nest building began. Moss was brought in and taken out if not considered good enough. What looked like dried grass was also used, and again, discarded if it didn’t come up to scratch. There were problems to overcome; some nesting material wouldn’t fit through the hole. This caused quite a dilemma as little Boudicca tugged and tugged until at last she managed to squeeze her bundle through the entrance. The male blue tit has little to do with nest building. Now, in May,

the eggs are hatching and he has to work as hard as his mate bringing food to the new hatchlings. There could be as many as ten or more hungry mouths to fill inside that nest box and watching from the kitchen table I can see a constant back and forth of birds with beaks full of grubs. Little Boudicca chose her nursery well: a safe nesting site and a nearby bird feeder with a ready supply of food if natural supplies fail, which they sometimes do. But wait, what’s that sitting on top of one of the bird feeders? Blue tits beware, the sparrow hawk is hungry too and blue tits are on its menu. Article and photos by Geraldine Holbourn

remove it or remove its limbs consider growing a climber into it and you have its own natural support.

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Putting Climbers & Plants Together

A

lot of people decide to plant a rose e.g. a banksia which is a non-thorny rose, in an apple tree, or a Wisteria growing up into the canopy of a tree.

climbers and plants.

If your plant has got away and is taking over the tree, there are a number of things you can do. You can prune it back very hard. This has both advantages and disadvantages: it will stop your climber from flowering for a number of years, but it will also spur it on to grow lots of very strong shoots to grow through the canopy again. These will normally calm down after a couple of years and then flowering will begin again. These upright water shoots will then put on feathered sideways shoots which encourages the stems to lean over and set themselves into the weeping position. So, do not worry if they grow straight up because it does encourage them to weep over. Obviously thinning out helps both plants tremendously - it allows more light to get to both plants.

Most climbers are designed to grow up into the canopy to maximise the light and pollination but this doesn’t help the plant it grows up into. Most climbers will eventually kill the hosts they are These are great for a number of reasons, they provide extra colour using as support. My recommendation is to find a in your garden, for example: if Another thing people do, you have a cherry tree which climber that doesn’t swamp the especially with Ivy, is that they cut flowers in early spring, this can be plant it grows into, otherwise it the climber at the base to followed by the Wisteria flowers, will kill it. If you already have a and can look really good. There dead stump which you don’t know encourage more growth to go back up. Keeping something as thick are some ground rules for To growing what to do with, before you advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk 52

and as evergreen as Ivy out of the canopy and just up the main stem is a good idea. If you have more than one tree with a climber growing up it you can rotate the growth. For example, Ivy - you can cut the Ivy off one tree in year one, and then off the second tree in year two, so on, and rotate round to ensure that you always have some climbers at maturity and you don’t have such a big job when they reach the canopy. The main thing you have really got to look out for is dead left in the tree. Roses are especially prone to this and it adds extra stress to the trees. The dead acts like a sail in the wind and also as a massive blanket in the snow adding extra weight and pulling down branches, so thinning out on a reasonably regular basis is what I would recommend.

around the tree to help it grow up, but remember to remove these once it is up into the tree because they are easily forgotten about and could possibly dig into the tree. Wisterias like to tangle themselves up into a tree so a single wire that’s hung from the tree and fastened into the ground with a tent peg is all that is needed, just to get it going, but again remember to remove it when the plant becomes strong enough. Choose a plant that flowers at a different time from its host, giving you a prolonged flowering time.

Supporting up into a tree Once you have bought your climber and you know that it won’t swamp the tree, you might need to help guide it to grow up the tree to start with. You can put chicken wire or some very lose strands of wire If you have an upcoming event please let me know. ringing Pots Of Colour To Ledbury Nursing Home A busy 2018 started with a project to decorate plant pots which were then filled with spring plants. At a joint meeting the pots were presented to the residents of Ledbury Nursing Home. To quote Barbara Langlois who organises The Evergreens, "This project has been a lot of fun and we hope that the residents will enjoy having one of these pots in their room. We wish to thank Jeanette McCulloch, community artist, who devised and conducted the project, Eastnor Masonic Lodge who funded it, and Chamberlain's Nursery who gave us a generous discount on the plants.” She also thanked the Nursing Home for putting on a splendid tea as a 'thank you'. The Lodge were represented by David Sparrey who commented on the quality of the workmanship and the Nursing Home Area Manager Anita Kinnear thanked The Evergreens for their kindness. Several former members of the club are now residents of the Nursing Ledbury Focus

Home so some old friendships were renewed over tea.

M

embers say Goodbye to an Old Friend Members recently said a fond farewell to Margaret Chambers. Club Chair Barbara Langlois said “As Margaret is the longest serving member of the Club she will be greatly missed but everyone hoped she would be very happy in her new home and she promised they would keep in touch. Margaret has made the difficult decision to pull up her roots so that she can be closer to family in Bedfordshire.” She said “I am looking forward to seeing more of my grandchildren.” The club has attracted several new members recently and now has more men than ever before. They have also been entertained by musicians Glam Sparrow and The Life of Riley and heard an excellent talk on tea given by Jan Scrine from Bromyard. Started 60 years ago by Ledbury Rotary Club, the Evergreens is a social club for the over 55s that meets weekly on a Wednesday afternoon.

Currently most of the members live alone so the meetings provide social contact, interesting, sometimes challenging, activities, and an opportunity to chat over tea and cake. It gives them something to look forward to, especially during the dark winter days. For those unable to make their own way to the meetings, which are normally held in Harling Court, community transport collects members from their homes and returns them afterwards. Over the last nine years, everything has been arranged by Barbara Langlois but she has decided to step down from this voluntary role. The new leader will need to match Barbara’s commitment but she will ensure a smooth and easy transition. It may appear daunting but the club has a long list of contacts including some regular visitors and the support of local organisations such as CAL the Rotary Club and Eastnor Masonic Lodge. She has also developed a number of benefactors so that currently the club has no financial concerns. If you are interested, please contact Barbara on 01531 636790

Yeomanry often like to collect postcards according to their own interests and so one finds enthusiasts looking for subjects ranging from dogs and cats to railway stations and old post offices. Of course some of the most sought after cards are those showing local history scenes and most people are very interested to see photographic postcards of their local area from ‘times gone by’. A group of five Hereford town centre postcards in Smiths April sale depicted two charitable sponsored walks in 1909, a Marathon race in 1908 and street scenes from an early election day – the five cards sold for £170 – which is not a bad return for five little bits of cardboard when you think about it. Of course it is the fact that most of these postcards would have been thrown away over the years which makes them so rare and desirable. Another interesting lot in the sale was a one owner mixed album of postcards which included a Glastonbury 1909 carnival scene and a hatters shop front from Stroud. The album which sold for £210 also included my favourite card in the sale – a very cute looking Louis Wain cat smiling sweetly and with the text ‘Warmest Wishes for Christmas’ It is only after one looks closely at the card that one

Community Speed Watch Introduction from your Safer Neighbourhood Team Excessive or inappropriate speeding is dangerous and is responsible for many unnecessary injuries and collisions. It is a serious traffic offence which affects the quality of life of many communities throughout West Mercia. Reducing excessive and inappropriate speed is a priority for West Mercia Police and the force use a wide range of education, enforcement and publicity programmes to address the issue. Our Community Speed Watch (CSW) initiative is one of these and similar schemes are operated throughout the UK. These local schemes are established where communities raise speeding as a concern through their local safer neighbourhood team, parish council or at a local PACT (Partners and Communities Together) event. They enable local people to play an active role in improving their community and provide a valuable deterrent to people driving irresponsibly. What is Community Speed Watch? Community Speed Watch (CSW) schemes are

coordinated by the police but managed and run by volunteers in the community. The scheme enables local people to take an active role in road safety and make their community safer. The aim of CSW is NOT to catch as many speeding drivers as possible. It aims to encourage motorists to drive at a safe and appropriate speed, reduce speed in areas of concern, re-educate drivers about the dangers of speeding and address concerns from local residents about cars speeding through their neighbourhood. How does CSW work? At specified safe locations, volunteers monitor the speed of passing vehicles with a hand-held speed detection device. Offending vehicles’ details are recorded on a log sheet, including the names and signatures of the volunteers witnessing the offence, the make / model and registration number of the vehicle and the speed recorded by the hand-held device. Log sheets should be submitted to safer neighbourhood teams within seven days, who will arrange for warning letters to be sent to the registered keepers with advice on safer driving. Schemes will be evaluated to ensure they are having a positive impact on vehicle speed, driver behaviour and community reassurance. Which communities can have scheme? There are a number of criteria which must be met before a scheme will be established: • Speeding must have been identified as a PACT priority. • Active speed enforcement operations must not already be underway in the area by West Mercia Police or the Safer Roads Partnership.

Why females should avoid a girls’ night out after they are married !! The other night I was invited out for a night with the 'girls.' I promised my husband that I would be home by midnight. Well, the hours passed and the margaritas went down way too easily. Around 3am, a bit loaded, I headed for home. Just as I got in the door, the cuckoo clock in the hallway started up and cuckooed three times.

Woodlands Country Cat Hotel “Where cats are at home”

Woodlands Country Cat Hotel is a modern boarding cattery close to the market town of Ledbury in Herefordshire and in easy reach of Hereford, Malvern and surrounding villages.

Family owned and run Modern indoor pens with outdoor views Heated sleeping areas

Quickly, realizing my husband would probably wake up, I cuckooed another nine times.

Heated beds

I was really proud of myself for coming up with such a quick-witted solution, in order to escape a possible conflict with him.

Now taking bookings for Christmas

(Even when totally smashed .... 3 cuckoos plus 9 cuckoos totals 12 cuckoos = MIDNIGHT!)

The next morning when my husband asked me what time I got in, I told him 'midnight'. He didn't seem angry in the least.

Woodlands, Falcon Lane, Ledbury, HR8 2JW

Whew, I got away with that one! Then he said 'We need a new cuckoo clock.' When I asked him why, he said, 'Well, last night our clock cuckooed three times, then said 'oh bugger.' Cuckooed four more times, cleared its throat, cuckooed another three times, giggled, cuckooed twice more, and then tripped over the coffee table and f*rted. ‘

isitors can enjoy glorious gardens in the Herefordshire village of Putley on Saturday May 12 and there’s every chance they will find the place “pretty in pink.” Gardeners are already busy preparing for the fourth annual Open Gardens in the idyllic village near Ledbury. A sixth garden will be joining in this year, adding to the variety which includes a garden laid out in the 1920s, with its stunning rhododendrons and azaleas; a lovingly-tended cottage garden; a beautifully laid-out quarter-acre plot with themed borders; gardens with a proliferation of roses, wisteria and clematis and some with their deliberate “wild” corners with bluebells and cowslips. Putley is surrounded by orchards, so an additional treat may well be the sight of the cider apple trees covered in a marvellous mass of pink blossom. The event attracts garden enthusiasts from far and wide and benefits from the happy coincidence of being held over the same weekend as the Malvern Spring Festival. “Last year, we were absolutely delighted to discover that many of our visitors were staying in the area for the Spring Festival and, as we are only a 25-minute drive away, they had added our little village’s Open Gardens to their itinerary. It’s a happy coincidence we weren’t prepared for,” said organiser Tim Beaumont. “But we’re hoping it might be repeated!” Visitors to Putley Open Gardens are also encouraged to explore delightfully-situated Putley

Church. The carefully tended churchyard warrants a visit, with its unusual oak and teak War Memorial, a very fine medieval Preaching Cross, specimen trees, the possibility of emerging wild flowers and entrancing views over the adjacent duck pond. The gardens and church are accessible by wellmarked footpaths through the orchards and pastures, providing a chance for visitors to experience Putley’s beautiful countryside, wild flowers and wildlife as well as the gardens themselves. The event is being held to support the upkeep of the Parish Hall and Church and everything starts (and finishes) at Putley Parish Hall, HR8 2QN, where there is car parking, tickets, teas, tombola and plant sales. Gardens are open from 12 noon until 5.30pm; entrance is £5.00 per person; children under 15 are free. Dogs are not allowed in the gardens. For more information visit: www. putleygardens.org.uk.
