In recent months we have had a number of issues with deliveries of the Ledbury Focus, with severasl complaints from members of the public who have not received their copies, or have had them delivered late. So, going forward, if you don’t receive your copy of the magazine by the 5th of the month, please do let me know – email, phone and mobile numbers are on the left of this page – and I will ensure that your copy is delivered immediately. Don’t forget Mother’s Day is on Sunday 31st March, so make sure you spoil your Mum – chocolates, flowers, breakfast in bed and lunch at a fancy restaurant! She deserves it! And that’s all for this month. Until next time, keep happy and healthy.

Newent Plant Centre

Celebrating 10 years and still growing strong H

aving won four RHS Gold Medals, a clutch of Silver Gilts and several business awards it's something owner Mark Moir couldn't imagine when he set up the business ten years ago this March. "Back then we were only half our current size" he says " but the word spread quickly about our great range of plants and since then we've built up a large base of loyal customers." Its not hard to see why. The nursery, adjacent to The Nest Coffee Shop and Deli, stocks a beautiful range of plants and has become a specialist nursery for Heucheras & Tiarellas. The friendly staff are always happy to spend time talking to you about suitable plants for your garden and how to care for them. "Whether you are a veteran gardener, or new to it, there is something here for everyone" continues Mark. "Our plants are laid out with complementary

16

varieties, showing what plants work well together and giving you inspiration for your own planting. The plants have always been at the forefront of our business and we grow as many as we can here, because customers love to see our own plants progressing through the season and return regularly to obtain something they saw as younger plugs weeks beforehand." To add to their range of plants, Newent Plant Centre source plants from several local growers as well as specialist nurseries from throughout the UK Newent Plant Centre are planning several events throughout the year to celebrate their 10th Anniversary, including a special display in the RHS Floral Marquee at the Malvern Spring Festival in May. "To kick start our celebratory year we are having a Birthday Party weekend on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th March," explains Mark. "It's the perfect time to get

started in the garden, with thousands of new season plants, pots, compost, seeds, bulbs, etc." As a Special "THANK YOU" to all customers there is 10% off everything for the Birthday Party Weekend Newent Plant Centre, at The Nest, Hereford Road, Ledbury, Herefordshire, HR8 2PZ Tel 01531 670121 www.newentplantcentre.co.uk

LEDBURY TOWN COUNCIL Making a Difference for Ledbury In May the entire Town Council is up for election. There has never been a better time to bring fresh thinking to managing many of our community’s assets. The Council has made huge steps forward over the last year and the time is right to be looking to the future. Our work includes looking after some of the town’s historic buildings, managing Dog Hill Wood, the Recreation Ground, the Cemetery, reviewing all planning applications and supporting local organisations that help the town thrive. The Council needs 18 councillors who are prepared to give some of their time to undertake projects, discuss and agree actions to ensure the day to day running of the town, and generally ‘look out’ for the good of the town.

24

If you are considering standing, come and find out more about what’s involved. We will have a stand under the Market House from 10am to 1pm on Saturday 2nd March. Alternatively, drop in to the Council offices between 6pm and 8pm on Wednesday 6th March; some of the current team will be on hand to answer your questions about what’s involved and how to go about standing for election.

Ledbury Council in Action Projects running at the moment include a Traffic Management Working Party, chaired by Cllr Howells, which is carrying out a survey of concerns about traffic flow and road safety, in and around Ledbury. The working party is consulting with residents and the Police and reviewing existing information. Before the end of this month, the aim is to complete a report with recommended actions, to be

presented to Ledbury Town Council. Once approved, this will be submitted to Herefordshire Council. When the weather improves and the base can be laid, we will have a new shelter on the Recreation Ground. Cllr Hopkins has been progressing this project whilst also reviewing the work needed in the Cemetery and getting to grips with the saga surrounding the repair of the War Memorial in the High Street. Meanwhile Cllr Whattler has walked the town surveying the state of our litter bins. He is putting together a report that will help us and Herefordshire Council draw up a rolling plan of maintenance and replacement. For further information about the Town Council and its work visit our website or visit our facebook page: http://www. ledburytowncouncil.gov.uk

Lament for Martin

A dedication to my precious Brother Best Beloved rare and precious bloom, your petals have begun to fall, the uninvited call bids the sepal bud wither, its promise unfulfilled. The chance to blossom bright, denied. Dreams unrealised, stolen by rancorous intent. The stricken core falters, future takes flight. One of the Ledbury Focus’s regular contributors, Jan Long, has asked to have the following poem printed in this month’s magazine. The poem is dedicated to Jan’s younger brother, Martin, aged 54, who has recently been diagnosed with Motor Neurones Disease, (ALS) and has been told by his consultant that his life expectancy is about twelve months. As you can imagine, this news has been devastating for Martin, his wife, children and siblings.

Best Beloved the robust stalk, wrought slender now, stem weakened, helpless against the capricious scythe, brutal and unrelenting. Our tears nourish the hungry roots, pernicious fate has rendered useless; a cold dried husk, its vindictive gift. Lamenting choirs pierce the night, then silenced, by despairing grief, to rage against the ruined garden.

Research into MND has been inconclusive it is still a "no cause, no cure" condition, and astonishingly there are more than 5000 sufferers in the UK, with at least six new cases of MND each week.

Best Beloved – undaunted spirit, resolute unflinching will, fight the ravaging thief, confound the creeping rot with valiant heart.

Jan has written this poem - with guidance and advice from local poet Sarah-Jane Arbury - about her brother and his amazing courage in the face of a virtual death sentence. She hopes this will help to create a greater awareness and highlight the terrible suffering of those stricken with MND.

Through fading voice, be heard. Through softest air, draw breath.

Editor 26

Reveal the brave inmost flower, the very heart, beauteous, handsome. Enduring spectrum, glorious colours unfading, glowing, unbroken, living eternally, our Best Beloved.

Jan Long for her beloved brother. To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

Glen Close stars in ‘The Wife’ which is both poignant and funny. Joan has spent forty years sacrificing her dreams for husband Joe, as he prepares to receive the biggest accolade of his career, she finds herself at a turning point. In Tokyo the poverty -stricken Shibatas family turn to petty thieving to make ends meet ‘Shoplifters’ is a rare depiction of Japanese society’s urban underclass ‘Wajib’ provides a snapshot of modernday Nazareth as Shadi returns from living abroad to Nazareth’s Arab community to honour his traditions and invite guests to his sister’s wedding. In the 1940’s Prince Seretse Khama of Bechuanaland is studying in Britain where he falls in love with a white British Clerk .‘A United Kingdom’ shows the struggle they face to maintain their love, against the diplomatic and domestic firestorm it has sparked, as they try to help their people in a land that would become the Republic of Botswana.

The Warmth of a Real Coal Fire

Hear about some of the developments that are taking place – the oral history project, a programme of children’s activities and research into the use of the buildings in the Homend over the last 150 years. Tea, coffee and refreshments will be provided. The Heritage Centre will be opening this year on Monday 1st April. Last year we had nearly 24,000 visitors coming from all parts of the globe. Visitors particularly enjoy the atmosphere of the building, the huge chimney, the construction of the building itself and the friendliness of the volunteers. It goes without saying that the building can only be open throughout the season as a result of the efforts of our wonderful band of volunteers. There are over 50 at present but we have a few gaps to fill for the coming season. Support is provided and you don’t have to be an expert to play a valuable role at the Heritage Centre.

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Winter Damage

D

amage in winter is important to understand as a gardener. We associate winter with bad weather, and this is often when plants are damaged quite severely.

Roses for example are pruned back in autumn time to reduce ‘wind rock’. Roses do not have very stable root systems and if you do not prune back the top growth enough they will rock in the wind and this can cause root damage. This consequently weakens the plant and they will struggle in the summer months as a result. In autumn reduce the top growth by half. Similarly you see this with orchard trees blown over in bad conditions. Wind is the main culprit, however, with winters like we had last year heavy snow can cause damage by collapsing plants and by bringing down and snapping branches. In addition the weight of the snow in the canopy can cause some trees and shrubs to uproot. Large conifers are particularly at risk from this type of damage, as are species with horizontal branch structure. By reducing the end weight of large branches you can reduce the risk of branch failure. Tree pruning of this nature should be carried out by trained professionals.

With most plants in the garden pruning on a regular basis using horticulturally sound pruning techniques and not letting shrubs get too tall, too lanky or too dense will help prevent problems in adverse conditions. There are other forms of damage that can occur which are not always easy to see. For example, waterlogging in winter. You should always check this before planting new hedging or trees. What you don’t want is to allow the water table to build up and waterlog the plants in winter, causing them to rot. There are ways to do this, such as adding grit to the soil. Compost and manures will also help to improve the structure of the soil and can reduce waterlogging in heavy soils. In addition to pruning plants and improving drainage, helping to shelter plants is important. Other things you can do are: • digging with a rotavator to stop puddlelining • make sure you are not planting in a wind tunnel • planting other nursing plants around more fragile plants • snow knocking if snow is heavy • following good horticultural practices • knowing which plants will do best in the conditions within your particular garden

• which ones will appreciate a more sheltered spot Knocking snow off hedges if it is dense can help with maybe a specific microclimate or aspect maintain their structure and prevent damage. Just • planting on well-draining soils, with good take a rake and groom the snow off onto the amounts of organic matter worked into the soil. ground or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk 36 to reduce the weight. To advertise call 01684 833715

The other thing to look out for, especially if the winter is particularly hard and there is a lot of snow around, you may notice bark being stripped off mature trees by deer and grey squirrels. They find the sugar and sap in the bark to be a good food source in winter. Particularly vulnerable specimen trees may need to be physically protected from deer by putting barrier fencing around the base of the tree or even the garden. You may be able to discourage squirrels and deer from eating your specimen trees and shrubs by providing some alternative food sources. One solution could be to plant some soft browsing vegetation such as willow and red-twigged dog woods (Cornus stolonifera) which can be grown as sacrificial stems. The deer will hopefully prefer these more sugary plants to your other trees.

Alternatively, you may put out commercially available pelleted feeds in the hope that well fed deer and squirrels will leave your favourite plants alone. If you have a particular problem with deer try and select plants for your garden which are less palatable to them. Many plants such as flowering currant (Ribes sanguineum) and Mexican orange blossom (Choisya ternata) have toxins in the leaves which deer seldom eat. Field mice will also come into the garden and feed on bulbs and tubers. Try where possible to prevent them from getting into garden sheds where you have bulbs and tubers stored. These tiny creatures can cause a lot of damage to things likeFocus chitted potatoes. Ledbury

Dolly Bevan

profile of a Ledbury senior citizen

I

n 1945 a very young Dolly Bevan left her home in Nakuru, a small town north-west of Nairobi in Kenya, and came to England with her husband to settle in Ledbury. A few years later, when her children were old enough, Dolly got a job in the local dairy, where she continued to work for the next thirteen years, leaving only when she was offered a job as resident cleaner at Ledbury Police Station. Twenty-seven years later, Dolly retired, only to be offered a similar post as cleaner at the Magistrate’s Court, where she stayed for another eight years, when she retired again, this time permanently! Despite having a husband and a young family to care for, as well a busy full-time job, Dolly also managed to find time to take on outside catering for formal functions, such as wedding, christenings, wakes, etc., and in her “spare” time, Dolly was also involved in coffee mornings and other similar fund-raising events for charity. When she retired - for the second time - Dolly continued to be involved with fund-raising

activities, but also spent time working in her beautiful garden. Gardening was one of Dolly’s favourite out-door activities, but sadly, two years ago she suffered a serious injury when she fell in her green house. Although fully recovered from the actual injury, the residual effects have meant that she has had to permanently give up gardening. Fortunately one of her neighbours now very kindly attends to this for her. However, this left Dolly with time on her hands, something she simply could not tolerate, so she started looking for something else with which to occupy herself. Amongst her many talents, Dolly is also a very keen knitter, so when she read an article about the need for bonnets for premature babies she decided this was just the thing she

continue knitting because her friends keep giving her wool, and it gives her something to do when she’s watching television. Dolly has lived in Ledbury for 74 years, and has nothing but praise for the town and its residents. “I feel as if the town of Ledbury opened its arms and just took me in” she said. “I have had a long and happy life here, and I am especially fortunate to live in a very nice part of the town with lovely neighbours.” Editor’s note: needed to keep herself busy. Her daughter downloaded a pattern from the internet, and Dolly set to work. Using up oddments of wool left over from other projects, as well as scraps of wool donated by friends and family, Dolly soon had a number of tiny “beanie” style bonnets knitted and ready to be despatched to an address in London, where they are sent on the relevant hospitals. In the last two years Dolly has knitted over 100 of these little bonnets, as well as a number of tiny baby caps and extra small matinee jackets, some of which are pictured here. When asked if she planned to stop knitting for premature babies, Dolly said she would probably

Ledbury Focus

When Dolly contacted me to do this article, her intention was to make people aware of the needs of premature babies. However, when I met her I was so taken with Dolly’s story (especially when I discovered that we are both “Kenya girls”) that I decided to make this article a brief resume of Dolly’s life in Ledbury, as well as highlighting the work she has done for these tiny infants, whom she will never meet, but simply wanted to do something to help them. Dolly is a lovely person, and I hope she won’t mind me saying this, but she is an inspiration to us all. If any reader would like to know more about the bonnets Dolly makes for premature babies, please contact the Ledbury Focus editor – contact details are on page 6.

in the surgery waiting room and are accessible on the Practice website • The Group is active in producing information and other resources for the Practice

S

t Katherine’s Surgery Patient Group was set up in 1997. It was the first to be formed in Herefordshire and became an early reference group for what is now a requirement for all GP Surgeries nationally - to form a Patient Group. They are known under the title Patient Participation Groups (PPGs) and exist to promote co-operation between each Practice and the patients registered with them. For a number of years this group has been a member of the National Association of Patient Participation Groups (NAPPG) which is an advisory body supporting PPGs. St Katherine’s group members carry out their remit and constitution by interacting with the surgery staff. • They plan health awareness events which are designed to give patients additional information on understanding particular health issues • Members regularly attend public meetings with Herefordshire Clinical Commissioning Group, Health Watch, and attend other meetings where organisations have an input on health care and its provision in the Ledbury area • With surgery staff, members produce a Newsletter approximately every quarter - copies are available

42

• Members are currently setting up a Walking for Health group - for patients who would find outdoor social activity of benefit, and hope it would interest those who live alone • The Practice has developed a Facebook page so that patients can be kept up to date on health promotion, the Practice services, and other aspects which impact on health. We are liaising with Herefordshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), the Town Council and Ledbury Health Group to ensure patients’ voices are heard regarding the future healthcare provision for Ledbury. This is particularly important when so much building is planned for the area. At present, we meet every three months at St Katherine’s Surgery on a Tuesday from 4pm to 5.30pm. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer member of St Katherine’s Patient Group do please talk to one of our receptionists or email the practice at stkatherinessurgery@nhs.net. As a group we wish to represent the diversity of the patients registered at the Practice. We therefore welcome volunteers from people of all ages and backgrounds.

Hail to the Little Gentleman in Black Velvet

article & photos by Geraldine Woods-Humphrey

W

alking through the snow on February 1st, a scoop of bird food in each hand and not looking where I was going, I tripped over a mole hill. We didn’t have much snow on that Friday, but enough to disguise one of the many recent eruptions of brown, mini-peaks of soil. The moles seem to be hyperactive now with shallow tunnels wriggling through the grass like giant worms. Google ‘moles’ and you’ll come up with a dozen sites telling you how to get rid of them. But a Jacobite will raise a glass to the mole, deemed a hero by Stuart supporters because William of Orange died as a result of complications after a fall from his horse which had stumbled on a molehill. March the 8th is the anniversary of the accession of the Stuart Queen Anne and Jacobites toasted the mole, ‘the little gentleman in black velvet.’ Moles are found in nearly every habitat, living out their lives almost entirely underground in a system of permanent and semi-permanent tunnels. These are complex, hundreds of meters long and mostly deep burrows. Male and female moles live solitary lives until the breeding season in spring. Females make nests within the tunnel system where they Ledbury Focus

construct one or more spherical nest chambers lined with a ball of dry plant material. A litter of 3-4 naked babies are born, fur grows at 14 days, eyes open at 22 and weaning begins between 4 and 5 weeks. Although a mole’s diet consists mostly of worms, they also eat many insect pests such as cockchafer and carrot fly larvae. Their tunnels can also help aerate heavy soils; my clay can certainly do with some of that. I live happily with my moles and even more so after what happened last March when the Beast from the East struck. There were surface mole tunnels everywhere loosening the ground so it felt as if I was walking on a bog. Little

did I know that this might have been a life saver for one particular bird. When the Beast arrived the wind blew most of the snow over the top of us leaving large are-as of ground clear. Late one afternoon I spotted a woodcock in the orchard. It looked so miserable, I feared it wouldn’t last the night. Then it stirred and began probing the ground in areas where the mole’s tunnels were. I watched the woodcock feed, even in those freezing conditions I could see it was finding grubs and worms. This year I’m hoping for more daffodils than snow and as the mild winter has given them a head start we may be lucky.

Wild daffodils

T

he spring equinox is on the horizon (20th March), bringing fewer chilly mornings and longer days to enjoy the vibrant colours of spring. Wild daffodils can be spotted in meadows and hedgerows, the bright yellow flowers glowing in the daylight. Woodlands steal the show in March with botanical gems such as celandine, primrose, ramsons and dog’s mercury carpeting the floors and delicate white blackthorn flowers clinging to the bare thorny branches. The bluebells shine later in spring, usually in April, covering forest floors with elegant lilac flowers.

Discover a Wilder Herefordshire with Herefordshire Wildlife Trust 48

Listen for the chiffchaffs singing their name ‘chiff chaff ’ from the tree tops as they migrate back to the UK for spring, followed swiftly by wheat-ear, swallows and sand martins. The peak dawn chorus season is far from here, though many birds will sing from their perches warning others and defending their territory. Listen out for the eloquent notes of song thrush, the raging blackbird and the chirping robin. Forget the mad hatter, are you mad as March hare? See the courtship activity of the hares boxing, kicking and chasing one another, in the early morning. Watch the picky females fending off romantic, pushy males, in grassland and arable fields, (with crops long enough for them to hide in if necessary). Be careful not to spook them as they are very shy and fast creatures, they will be gone before you realise.

What is Fascia? Fascia is the connective tissue made up primarily of collagen fibres that sit beneath the skin, it covers all of the structures of the body and allows flexibility and movement between various parts of the body. Collagen is a protein that makes up around 70% of all the protein in connective tissue, it is the most common protein in the animal kingdom. It has very unique properties in that water molecules are attracted to it and will stick to it in a very ordered way. Fascia consists of very tough tissue or sometimes tubes of connective tissue around specific structures, these provide coverings of varying thicknesses and strength around every structure in the human body.

importance in the human body. Dr Pischinger research led him to state that fascia is actually the body’s largest organ. Dr Helen Langevin in her research has shown that fascia forms a body wide network that functions in a nerve-like signaling capacity sending vital messages around the body as a massive communication system, the implications of this are vast. The importance of Fascia The body maintains structure through its relationship with key structural bands of muscle via fascia.

There is a high degree of fluidity in fascia which allows for the free movement and glide between groups of muscles and organs.

One key function of fascia bands is to maintain upright structure and to support the spine. If there is tension or weakness in the fascia a range of reactions can result such as pressure on nerves, tension in the musculature on one side and compensation patterns being set up in the rest of the body.

More and more research is being conducted on fascia and its

present in an entirely different part of the body, this is why sometimes in a treatment I end up treating a completely different part of the body to where the client is telling me is painful.

properly. For example, the blood is pumped around the body by the heart. The lymph system has no organ too help it pump around the body and needs movement to make this happen.

What is emerging out of the research that’s is been conducted now is that fascia and connective tissues are absolutely critical to our overall health.

Cortisone –Some practitioners have found the effect of these on fascia to be incredibly debilitating causing areas of density and lack fluidity. Taking homeopathic cortisone may have an impact on desensitising someone who has had a lot of cortisone injections.

How The Bowen Technique works with Fascia In Bowen a lot of attention is given to the fascia by changing the way in which the muscles and fascia relate to each other and a change in the structure becomes inevitable whereby the spine will adopt a better position for example. Bowen work does have a big impact on the connective tissue. If we imagine the spine as a tent pole being held in position by guy ropes which in this case are the bands of fascia that support the spine, we can see how a bend in these ropes of fascia might cause tension in the spine. In Bowen work we aim to change the way in which the muscles and fascia relate to each other and this then has a big impact on how the structure presents. This way of working is incredibly holistic and often has a much longer lasting effect on the structure and beyond. How to keep your Fascia functioning well Hydration – keeping your fascia hydrated by drinking good quality water is very important, this allows the fascia to behave in the way it needs to in order to support the body in its form and function. Stretching – gentle slow stretching such as yoga or pilates is excellent for the fascia as it helps to orientate the collagen fibres. Stretching also helps to create space around and within the cells. Exercise – exercise helps fascia to remain fluid, when we are very sedentary congestion in the way of toxins builds up in our connective tissues. The lymphatic system (one of the body’s main elimination systems) needs movement to work Ledbury Focus

Consider regular Bowen work – The impulses that are created in the collagen fibres when the Bowen “moves” are applied (especially the crosswise stretching used in Bowen) to the body creates a small electrical charge which has strong healing properties. The fascia will respond as a whole to a Bowen “move” which has far reaching implications for how this amazing modality is received in practice. I see this regularly in practice when clients report how the work we have done one part of their body has had an impact on a different part of their body entirely. Another interesting point to note is how Bowen work can affect tissue memory, when connective tissue is subjected to pressure as in the Bowen “move” held tissue memories are often released, these may also be recalled by the client. This phenomenon is often referred to as somatic recall. Wellness Workshop I am holding a half day workshop on the 25th May 10am to 2pm in Corse, Gloucestershire. In the workshop, I will show you several techniques that can be used on a daily basis to enhance general health and wellbeing. Specifically, we will learn how to calm the stress response, balance the meridians, balance blood chemistry, reduce fatigue, boost the immune system, feel strong and healthy and much more! For further information, or to book your place please get in touch.

No-bake Chocolate Cheese Cake What could be more decadent? A crushed chocolate digestive biscuit base is layered with two types of creamy chocolate then topped with Maltesers and chocolate buttons – and no oven needed. METHOD yy Butter and line a 23cm spring-form cake tin. yy Blitz the biscuits in a food processor to form fine crumbs, then add the butter and blitz again. yy Tip the biscuit mixture into the tin and press down firmly with the back of a spoon. yy Chill in the fridge while making the filling. yy In separate bowls, melt the milk and dark chocolate over pans of gently simmering water. Alternatively, melt in the microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring between each interval until melted. Set aside to cool. yy Use a hand whisk to mix the mascarpone, cream cheese, icing sugar, Horlicks, cocoa and vanilla extract until smooth. yy Whip the cream, then fold into the mascarpone mixture. yy Add half the mixture to each of the bowls of chocolate, stirring until well combined. yy Stir 50g chopped Maltesers, 25g Maltesers and 50g chocolate buttons into the milk chocolate mixture; stir the rest of the Maltesers and chocolate buttons into the dark chocolate mixture. yy Spoon the dark chocolate mixture onto the biscuit base. Vet Talk

with Martin Leith BVetMed MRCVS

Dental Disease:

D

id you know that dental health problems affect over 80% of adult cats and dogs? Poor oral health can cause pain, discomfort, and difficulty eating and grooming. Common oral health problems include: • Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) • Periodontitis • Fractured teeth • Plaque build up In order to prevent dental problems, it is helpful to understand how and why they arise. Regular check ups of your pets mouth, at home and also at vet visits, will increase the chance of any abnormalities being noted before they can cause too much trouble to your pet. Pets are usually born with healthy mouths, with bright white teeth and pink (or pigmented) gums. However, plaque bacteria gradually builds up on the surface of the teeth over time, leading to inflammation of the gums – this is known as gingivitis / gum disease) This is often accompanied by bad breath and visible accumulation of tartar on the teeth. Gingivitis of varying degrees is one of the most common dental problems we see in practice; If gingivitis is left untreated, it will Ledbury Focus

Prevention & Advice begin to attack the gum line and the underlying support structures of the teeth, leading to infections and gum loss. Eventually, the teeth won't be held in place securely and will begin to fall out. Fortunately, if gum problems are identified at an early stage, a combination of a veterinary dental intervention and ongoing home care can make a real difference to your pet’s oral health. Following the professional clean under general anaesthetic, there are a number of home care options available. Daily tooth brushing is the gold standard, but we understand that this is not always possible due to time constraints and occasionally unwilling participants! For this reason, there are a number of dental diets and chews available. Often, dry food is more beneficial from a dental perspective than wet

food, as the dry food is abrasive and helps keep the levels of tartar on the teeth to a minimum. When brushing your pet’s teeth, it is very important that you do not use human toothpaste – this is because some of the ingredients in human toothpaste are harmful to pets. Regular check ups with the vets and nurses will allow the oral health of your pet to be closely monitored and hopefully avoid any need for dental extractions and surgical intervention. If you are concerned about your pet's oral health or would like any advice, please contact the surgery.

SECURITY & SAFETY AWARENESS Home Burglaries During January we suffered three house burglaries in Ledbury town in which jewellery and cash were stolen. All were empty unlit properties. Burglary can be a very upsetting for the victims and we understand that burglary in your home can feel like a personal crime and an invasion of your personal space. Please follow these simple tips to help improve your home security: • Lock your doors and windows every time you leave the house, even when you're just out in the garden • Hide all keys, including car keys, out of sight and away from the letterbox (remember a device could be used to hook keys through the letterbox) • Consider installing good outside lighting • Get a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property • Leave radios or lights in your house on a timer to make the property appear occupied

• Keep ladders and tools stored away; don't leave them outside where they could be used to break into your home • Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property • Consider joining or forming a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme • Remove valuables from view of ground floor windows If the worst does happen and you find that your home has been broken into, you can help us bring the offender to justice and potentially recover items stolen by following this forensic advice: • Limit what you touch around your home. It is tempting to try and establish exactly what has been taken, but every surface you touch may be destroying potential fingerprint or DNA evidence. • Broken windows should be left alone. Intruders have been known to leave DNA evidence on broken glass. If you clear the frame of broken glass prior to police arrival, you will also have cleared the potential for evidence to be obtained.

• Make sure the fences around your garden are in good condition

• Limit walking about within your home. Intruders can leave footwear marks which can be retrieved by our Crime Scene Investigators

• Secure bikes at home by locking them to an immoveable object inside a locked shed or garage

Any items or tools discarded by the intruder should be left where they are. If you see anything which

does not belong in your home, leave it alone and let the officer know about it.

Crime Prevention Advice: Phone Scams PCSO Alexander attended Leadon Bank Care Home in January and gave a scam awareness talk to the residents. The police take phone scams very seriously. Criminals will often use scam phone calls as a way of defrauding people out of their money. On most occasions, people realise that the call is a scam, but we are encouraging people to continue be vigilant. What to look out for: Typically scammers will pretend to be from the police, and tell callers that their bank cards have been used fraudulently. Often the callers have stated that they are from the MET police, but they have been known to claim that they are from West Mercia Police, MI6 or the fraud squad. They will often say that they have the offenders in custody. Usually they will then ask the victim to contact their bank to cancel their cards. In doing so, they will 'hold the line', so the victim believes that they are calling their bank, when in fact they are still on the line to the offenders. They will then encourage the victims to hand over their bank details, including their PIN which they will often ask them to enter into the keypad of the phone. Following this they will say that the cards are needed and send a "courier" to collect them. Sometimes they will ask the victims to give a password which the courier will use to make it appear more genuine. Consequently the offenders have been able to withdraw money from victims' accounts.

Sometimes the scammers have told the victims to attend the bank to transfer money but told them that bank employees are involved in the scam, so not to mention it to them. What to do: We offer the following advice to protect you from these scams: • Remember police officers, and banks will never ask for account details or PINs over the phone. • Police officers and banks would never come to your house to collect your cards or property. • They would also never ask you to transfer money to a secure account. • If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately and call 101 using another phone. In an emergency or if a crime is in progress call 999. • If you have elderly friends or relatives who may be vulnerable to this scam, please talk to them and make them aware.

Partners and communities together (PACT) meetings are quarterly meetings organised jointly between the safer neighbourhood policing team, local councillors and partners. They are your chance to raise issues affecting your local area and the next Ledbury PACT meeting is Tuesday 26th March at 7pm in the Council offices. Got an issue in your neighbourhood? Come along and tell us about it

On other occasions, rather than sending a courier, they have asked the victims to transfer money to a secure police account, asking them to call back to verify that they are genuine, whilst holding the line. Ledbury Focus

Ringing the Changes

T

he bellringers of Ledbury, with help from the schools in the town and some actors and musicians, are putting on an exciting evening of music, drama, history, poetry and prose entitled “Ringing the Changes” to celebrate the role of church bells in our community over 1000 years of its history. The event will take you from Norman times to the present day through a pageant of colourful and inspirational individuals, their words and achievements.

Have you ever wondered why the English style of bellringing was never exported to Europe? Have you heard the Ledbury legend of the bells ringing of their own accord? Did you know that John Bunyan, writer of The Pilgrim’s Progress, was a keen but conflicted bellringer? And what about the local innkeeper (also a bellringer) who found himself in court after a row with the curate in the 1880s? Would you like to hear how bells influenced the poetry of Housman, Bridges, Owen, Masefield, Betjeman and others, or a detective “whodunnit” by Dorothy Sayers ? Underpinning all this is the part played by our bells in calling the people of our town and country to worship, to celebrate local and national events, to mourn or to come together as a community. Ledbury Focus

You will be stirred, delighted, amused and informed in equal measure. The event is in association with the current campaign to restore our church bells, and will take place at 7.30 pm on Friday 8th March in St Michael’s Church, Ledbury. Entrance free (donations invited at the end). Refreshments available in the interval. Please tell all your friends. This is not just an event for the church community but something that will, I hope, be engaging for anyone locally who is interested in either local history or in literature and music. It would be wonderful to have the church packed on that evening. article by Tim Keyes photos: main - training bell being used at John Masefield High School to teach years 7 & 8 about bellringing; inset - Tim Keyes teaching in the tower
