March of course means daffodils, mad hares and Mother’s Day, so husbands and kids, don’t forget: Sunday 11th March – flowers, chocolates and breakfast in bed for Mum! And I’m sure she’d love a nice lunch out somewhere special . On to this month’s magazine. I’m sure you’ll all be pleased to know that Ledbury now has a new Town Crier, Clive Gunn, and you can read all about him on page 40. If you fancy growing your own pumpkins for Halloween this year, or would like to try your hand at growing your own veggies, Ledbury Allotment Association (page 16) are definitely the people to talk to about how to get started. Age UK (page 15) and Cross Roads Care (page 17) are looking for helpers, so if you have time on your hands, then why not contact one or both of these very worthwhile organisations and offer some of your spare time to them. As well as all our regular advertisers, we have several new ones again this month, so look out for them as you browse through the magazine. I mentioned last month that this year Easter Sunday and April Fool’s Day are on the same day – the first time since 1956 – so watch out for those Easter Eggs! And if you have a special Easter event, or perhaps a range of Easter eggs or chocolates you’d like to promote, give me a call on 01684 833715 or email me the details to info@ grapevinepublications.co.uk – the deadline for the April magazine is 8th March. Till next month, keep happy and healthy.

DINE IN STYLE: Searcys St Pancras Restaurant

S

t Pancras International is an iconic venue. ‘Meet me at the Champagne Bar at St Pancras’, certainly says, “I have arrived!” This is where Eurostar trains arrive and depart. The shopping is quality retail therapy. Searcys St Pancras Restaurant is very impressive and their adjacent Champagne Bar, with heated leather seating and ‘press for champagne’ buttons, has 98m of serving space and is reputed to be Europe’s longest. Elegance and splendour is all around. Regular train services from the Midlands and elsewhere, including south east England, arrive here. London underground and Thameslink services are fast and frequent, too. The upper level at St Pancras International has a 9m high statue titled ‘The Meeting Place’, depicting a couple embracing-celebrating romance and travel. Also, a statue of Sir John Betjeman commemorates the

Ledbury Focus

poet’s successful campaign to save the station, from demolition, during the 1960’s. The Searcys St Pancras Restaurant is very stylish, with pristine table settings and is located on the upper level at St Pancras International. Starters include Smoked Salmon, Scallops and Wild Venison Salami, amongst an array. Chicken Caesar and Gressingham Duck Salads are very popular. Shellfish choices include various, different Oyster selections, plus Crab and Lobster, for example. Mains of Lake District Beef Cheek and Loin of Lakeland Venison, along with Cornish Bream and Brixham Fish Pie, have regular ‘devotees’. Succulent, tender Steaks are further options and Sirloin, RibEye, plus the House-Aged, Lake District Beef, are very much enjoyed, by many. The complementing flavours of the dishes are, truly, a genuine credit

to the talented team of chefs and kitchen personnel. Desserts include Norfolk Treacle Tart with Devonshire clotted cream, and Warm Chocolate Cake accompanied by whisky ice cream. A most impressive wines/drinks list has something for all palates. Tasting events include champagnes and happen regularly. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, plus pretheatre dining, are all available here, and, if time is of the essence, ‘express’ is no problem. All dietary requirements can be catered for, also private dining, parties and occasions, accommodated. Gift vouchers are available – perhaps surprise someone special? f you crave a bit more space to grow your own fruit and vegetables, or want to get fit and healthy, then an allotment could be the answer! It’s a great way to meet like-minded people, share tips, learn new skills and keep healthy. Ledbury Allotment Association (LAA) has more than 90 members tending to 110 full, half and quarter plots on two fields off Burtons Lane, near to the Bromyard Road. A full plot measures 27m x 9m (90ft x 30ft) and a half plot is 13.5m x 9m (45ft x 30ft). This

year they are also offering ‘mini plots’ for those who are new to gardening and want to try growing on a small scale first. Having an allotment and growing your own will help to reduce your use of packaging, food miles and you can easily grow organically so you know exactly what is going into the food you eat. LAA boasts a community orchard growing a variety of eating apples, cooking apples, crab apples and pears which members share each year. They have a dedicated Wildlife Officer who creates wildlife havens around the site for visitors including barn owls, woodpeckers, bumblebees, butterflies, frogs and hedgehogs. Members receive a bi-monthly newsletter, invitations to social evenings and summer barbecues on site. LAA hosts talks by wellknown industry experts and organisations for members and the general public on horticulture and wildlife topics.

16

Their next talk is Terry Walton on Wednesday 21 March (see page 32 for more information). LAA

is also proud to support the annual Ledbury Community Day each June. In 2018 LAA is celebrating their 10th Anniversary of the formation of the association. A number of events are planned including a float at Ledbury Carnival on August Bank Holiday Monday. LAA is a registered charity and one of its goals is to promote gardening on various levels. They offer a mentoring service to new plot holders and encourage people to grow in a sustainable way. They are also developing links with other local groups who may benefit from gardening at some level - this could be schools, the health service or like-minded bodies. The trustees are actively developing the site to accommodate groups for educational visits. Plots and mini-plots are available to rent now. If you’d like to find out more or arrange a site visit, email ledburyallotment@gmail. com or telephone 01531 636462. More information is also available on their website www. ledburyallotmentassociation. co.uk, Facebook and Twitter.

Garden & Shed Security

A

s spring approaches, many people across West Mercia will be turning their attention to the garden, others will be taking out their bikes to enjoy the warmer weather, or preparing the BBQ. Many people store their gardening equipment, tools, bikes and BBQ s in their shed and, unfortunately, this means that these outbuildings are often seen as an easy target by thieves. The basics of protecting your home and garden Thieves will generally take the easiest option when considering breaking into a shed, outbuilding or home and security measures, such as a side gate and motionactivated lighting, can deter the would-be thief.

Another way to protect your home is to plant prickly hedging around the perimeter of your garden. How much is the contents of your shed worth? We have had a number of items stolen from sheds across the rural areas recently. When asked what is in their shed many people will answer something like 'Just a few old tools', 'A bit of fishing tackle', 'The kids toys', 'Nothing much just junk'. Because people think that the contents of their shed have little value they pay little attention to shed security. But what if you had to replace the contents of your shed, just how much would it cost? Write a list and add up just what

you do keep in your shed and its replacement cost, but beware you may be in for a shock, it is sometimes the case that the value of property people keep in their shed adds up to more than the value of the property in their living room. Now, is the security on your shed really up to the job? Follow these few simple guidelines to reduce the chances of your shed falling prey to thieves ▪▪ Keep your shed in good condition ▪▪ Fit a good quality closed shackle padlock to the door ▪▪ Hasp and staples should be bolted through the door ▪▪ Secure the hinges by using

However, there are other ways to protect your home and garden. Gravel paths and drives are a fantastic way of cheaply and unobtrusively discouraging a thief from entering your garden. Gravel makes a loud noise when stepped on which carries well at night and may wake the home owners, neighbours or a dog. This is instantly off-putting to a thief.

either clutch screws or by replacing a couple of the screws with bolts ▪▪ Fit grilles or mesh to the windows ▪▪ Old net curtains on the inside of the windows can hide the contents of your shed ▪▪ Invest in an alarm ▪ ▪ Large items such as bicycles should be chained together. It is much more difficult for a thief to carry away a lot of large heavy items all at once ▪▪ Mark your property with your postcode and house number/name ▪▪ Register your property at www.immobilise.com Remember the tools and equipment you keep in your shed could be used to force entry into your home, causing you even more expense and hassle. Don't give thieves shed loads of opportunities! Shed security products can be purchased from DIY stores and most garden centres. General garden precautions Don't leave items in your garden that could make the life of a thief any easier. For example, a ladder left out in your garden could be used to get into the upper floor of your home or onto the top of your shed. Likewise, other tools and gardening equipment left outside could be used to break into your home. Property marking makes your belongings much less attractive to thieves as they realise that the goods can easily be identified as stolen and traced back to the original owner. There are many ways to mark property: including engraving, UV marking and forensically coded systems such as SmartWater.

It all starts again W

alking between the bird feeders on a grey January day I was enjoying the delicate scent of Wyche hazel and winter flowering honeysuckle, when I was brought up sharply by a much more pungent smell - a fox had passed through sometime before dawn. Nice to know they are around, but I’d rather have the perfume of my shrubs. The mist thickened as I continued my rounds with peanuts, sunflower hearts and suet pellets; something for every bird’s palate. High up on a pear tree, a small flock of bullfinches glowed like forgotten Christmas baubles. A tiny goldcrest flitted amongst the snow damaged branches of a conifer. Daffodils, now in flower, had pushed their way through sheltered soil under the shrubs, and just before February snowdrops lit my way to the feeders, even in the mist. There is always a time, in every season, when change is noticeable. It’s in the air, that subtle feeling of something ending. In winter it’s the lengthening days, the birds singing again, the feel of the earth slowly wakening, of being on the verge of life emerging once more. When that day arrives, I can look forward to spring. This year there will be the added task of releasing the hedgehog back into the garden, if all continues to go well. All through March I will be watching the weather forecasts and hoping for a week of suitable weather. The hedgehog refused to hibernate, so I will weigh it before release and also continue to feed it until I know there is plenty of natural food available. I hope it will do well, but I will be keeping a close eye out for it, just in case. Ledbury Focus

It was fun, back in January, to watch a blue tit claim nesting rights to a nest box on the wall of the house. At breakfast each morning I watched her view her ‘des. res’. It would perch on the edge of the entrance, peer in, then disappear inside for a closer look. After a few minutes, out it would pop, satisfied this was just the nursery she needed. Other’s had the same idea and the competition lined up on a nearby cable ready to move in on the blue tit’s claim. But it was having none of it. Sidling along the cable, wings outstretched, crest up, angry as only a blue tit can be, it saw them all off. This nest box has been used for many years, predominately by blue tits, but occasionally a wren has managed to get in first. Broods have always been successful and the birds have given good breakfast time entertainment every year. article & photos by Geraldine Holbourn writing from the Malvern Hills

Ledbury Town Council News

O

ur new Town Crier is Clive Gunn. Since returning to Ledbury in 2008, Clive has been a volunteer driver for Ring & Ride and the Community Transport minibuses, becoming Minibus Co-ordinator at CVA. Last year Clive accepted the Chairmanship of Ledbury in Bloom and is proud of the RHS Gold Award that the team achieved – its 14th. He is a former Carnival Chairman, has been a helper at The Evergreen Club and is Chairman of Wellington Heath Garden Club. Clive's wife, Jane, is the Manager of Dawes Court and their two sons have both recently blessed them with a grandson. His health has been variable and he has not been out and about as much as he would like in 2017. He is now raring to go for 2018! If you run a charity and would like a visit from him please contact us. Community Chest There is a lot of talk these days about involving the community in the work of local councils. One way of doing this is to involve local residents in deciding on how to spend some of the council’s money or ‘budget’. We’ve set aside a sum of £5000 for this and aim to do so each year. This process of involvement or ‘participation’ is sometimes known as ‘participatory budgeting’. More important than the name of the budget is finding a way to involve local residents in deciding

40

Ledbury Town Crier Clive Gunn how it could be spent. The final decision will have to remain with the council, particularly if there are widely differing views, or the money needed would take the budget for say two years. We hope to discuss this at the Annual Town Meeting in April/May but the first step is to gather some ideas. To get your thinking going, we went back to the Town Plan and looked at some of the ideas there which you may like to think about. In no order of importance these include: provision of secure bike parking and rent-a-bike facilities at the railway station; extend the provision of allotments; commission a booklet of walks in the Ledbury area; renew and/or increase the number of litter bins with appropriate signage; improve lighting, and provide more seating in pedestrian areas; and more trees in town. Another approach, which we have used previously, is to support different charities in the town. If you know of a particular project being undertaken, you could propose that some of the money is spent supporting it. Whatever your ideas, please send them to the Town Council by 31 March 2018 either by e-mail to reception@ledburytowncouncil.gov.uk or by post to Ledbury Town Council Offices, Church Street, Ledbury , Herefordshire, HR8 1DH

Dementia Support and Advice As a dementia progresses, life can become increasingly difficult for both the person diagnosed AND their loved ones. Ongoing changes in relation to a person’s cognitive abilities, behaviour and communication skills all take a toll on everyone involved. With my qualifications and experience in working with those with dementia, I attempt to identify, monitor and assist with current problems - be they environmental, behavioural or cognitive. In many cases I hope to be able to not only aid understanding, but offer practical suggestions or strategies to adopt or employ. I especially look to provide emotional and practical support to the main carer and to assist in furthering their knowledge and understanding of the dementia in question, thereby improving their ability to: both look after and have the very best of relations possible, with the person diagnosed. I aim to work along side and in addition to other agencies; I can attend on a regular basis or as required (ad-hoc). Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Planting a new area of Your Garden N

ow that spring is in the air, look at planting up sections of your garden. If you have got an area that you would like to plant up, the first thing is to work out how long you can spend maintaining it. There is not much point planting a massive area of garden and finding its an absolute nightmare to weed and the thing gets overgrown. Once you know how much time you can commit to it, the next stage is

44

marking out. This can already be for an existing flower bed that you want to revamp - maybe because it is full of unwanted weeds or the shrubs have got too old and tired and need replacing. If it is an area of lawn which is to be turned into a flower bed, you are going to need to mark out. The best way to do this is either with some marker spray, bamboo canes or even some hose pipe to mark out the area. You should then go into your house,

Then you need to work out whether you are going to have any specimen plants - if you can find something that is roughly the same height as the plant you would like, you can place this in the bed to make sure that you can view it from the places in your garden and house from where you would like to see it. A chair is often a useful item to place in the bed to mimic a plant. This is important to make sure you will be able to see your specimen plant and that it will stand out and be a feature point in the bed. If you are creating a type of secret garden the same practice applies, where you can come around the corner and be surprised by the specimen plant. The next stage is the most important stage: the research. Use a soil pH test to find out what sort of soil you have; look at the sun and where it rises and sets and how much sun the bed will get. If you are doing this when the trees aren’t yet in full leaf, work out whether this will affect the bed.

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

Work out all the pros and cons of the bed, and that will give you the options of which plants you can use. Also look at the time of year - if you have been in the garden for the entire year, you will know whether the area gets very wet in the winter or very dry in the summer. Choosing your plants Sometimes this is best done slowly as plans will change as plants mature. However, have a list of plants you think you can fit into the garden. Work out their ultimate sizes so you can position them accordingly. To begin with, if you are buying very small plants you will find that the area looks very empty. If this happens do not panic and buy more plants to fill the gaps because once the plants have grown there will not be space for everything in the bed.

members then phone me up in the spring to buy the plants off the list and we then come with the plants for the plan and plant it up. If you cannot afford all the plants at once I would recommend buying the most mature specimen plants you can afford. Spending a little more on these plants will pay off in the end. Often specimen plants are slow

growing so you want to buy a big enough plant to give the wow factor. If there are herbaceous plants in the bed which grow very quickly, I would recommend buying the smallest plants possible to give a size difference. If you have to buy them in small 9cm pots, grow them on into larger pots before finally planting them out.

Some of my clients ask me to make a planting plan which they then hand out to other family members as Christmas presents. The family If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. Full House to hear Gardener Chris Beardshaw

L

edbury Rugby Club was the venue for the Ledbury Library Development Group's special event featuring Chris, Beardshaw that attracted a capacity crowd. A hugely enjoyable evening when Chris, just back from meetings in London, kept the audience entertained with the story of the garden he made for Great Ormand Street Hospital. With an insight into the creative process, he talked about how he worked with the three key groups - children, parents and clinicians and how this 'trio' impacted on his design. Although designed for the hospital, the garden had an initial 'excursion' to Chelsea in 2016. It took some weeks to transplant it to its permanent home, where it now thrives on the roof of the

boiler house. What was once a bleak outlook from the hospital windows has been transformed into a welcoming space of peace and tranquillity. Many of the hospital staff members inspired to take on the upkeep and maintenance, and the space continues to prove the health giving benefits of a garden. A regular on the BBC radio programme, Gardeners Question Time, Chris concluded with a Q and A session after which Chair of the Ledbury Library Development Group, Nina Shields, commented that Chris’s enthralling and inspirational presentation was so popular, that the she has already received many requests to book him for a return visit. article and photographs by Jan Long photos: Chris Beardshaw and Nina Shields

with Herefordshire Wildlife Trust territorial signal though we may interpret it as a joyful celebration of the season! Birds to listen out for in particular include blackbird, robin, song thrush and chiffchaff.

M

arch sees the beginning of spring as the days draw out and our gardens and countryside begin to green – though it can still be pretty chilly at times! We now welcome some early spring migrant birds back to our shores: wheat-ear and chiffchaff followed by swallows and sand martins. Though peak dawn chorus season is still a little way off, many birds will now begin to sing insistently from perches. This is intended as a

48

A warm March day will see the emergence from hibernation of some butterflies: peacock, small tortoiseshell, speckled wood, comma and brimstone may all be sighted from now on mild days. The mad March hare is known as such because this time of year is when you may be lucky enough to see hares ‘boxing’ each other. This is commonly the females who are not ready to mate fending off amorous suitors. Though a shy creature, look out over grassland or arable fields (where the crop is tall enough to

hide them when necessary), in the chance of seeing them. Early spring reveals many botanical gems, one of the loveliest being the first delicate white blackthorn flowers which appear on still bare, thorny branches in the hedgerows. However, woodlands steal the show in March. While later on in the spring it’s the bluebells which take centre stage, March reveals the subtler charms of celandine, dog’s mercury, primrose and ramsons in the dappled shade. Also a woodland flower, though seen too in meadows and hedgerows, the native wild daffodil is a speciality of this area and is seen at its best within the Golden Triangle – between Dymock, Kempley and Oxenhall.

POETRY NEWS FROM LEDBURY POETRY FESTIVAL

T

here is great excitement in the Festival Office as we confirm poets and performers appearing at this year’s Festival. Making his first Ledbury appearance is Miles Jupp from Radio 4’s News Quiz, and we welcome back Festival favourite Jackie Kay. Hollie McNish (who readers might recognise from her viral YouTube videos) will entertain with her fresh, inventive and modern poetry. For a full line up see www. poetry-festival.co.uk. Tickets will go on sale on Saturday 19th May unless you are a member of the Festival Friend scheme, in which case you get to book two days earlier on 17th May. Poetry Competition The Festival’s 2018 Poetry Competition has been launched and carries a £1000 prize! We are particularly encouraging local schoolchildren and young people to enter. Schools are welcome to submit class entries - see website for entry form, or speak to us and we will post a form out to you. Volunteers There are still places left on the Event Managers’ Training Day on Wednesday 14th March. Learn how to become an event manager and meet other volunteers. For other volunteering roles, see the website – we are always keen to see new faces. See website for Treasurer, Catering Manager and Student Intern opportunities, or email manager@poetry-festival.co.uk Community Workshops The Festival targets those who would most benefit from working with poets, learning valuable tools of self Ledbury Focus

expression. New poetry workshops are being delivered at Herefordshire Mental Health charity MIND, Herefordshire Young Carers and Herefordshire Probation Service, among other community settings. The large scale “Poetry Paradise Garden” poetry and art campaign has started across residential care settings across the county and will result in the beautiful artwork you see on the streets during the Festival. This project alone will involve over 300 people and is the Festival’s way of making the “invisible” people in our community “visible”. Poets in Schools The popular Ledbury Out Loud minifestivals for key stages 2 and 3 will be held on 21st March, 23rd and 24th April. These fun days explore poetry with real live poets and end with a group performance. They expand pupils’ literacy skills giving them confidence and inspire them to broaden their horizons. The Festival will deliver its first ever “Explore” Arts Award on 11 June. Ensure your child’s school books early as places fill very quickly. director@poetry-festival.co.uk Upcoming poetry events Ledbury Poetry Salon with Roz Goddard. Vet Talk

with Martin Leith BVetMed MRCVS

T

here has recently been a lot of publicity in the media regarding an emerging disease, emotively named Alabama Rot, but what actually is it and what are the symptoms we should be looking out for in our dogs? What is Alabama Rot? As this is a new condition, our knowledge of the disease is constantly expanding. The disease results in tiny blood clots forming in blood vessels which become blocked, leading to subsequent damage of the surrounding tissue. In the skin, this causes ulceration; however, in the kidney it can lead to severe organ dysfunction (kidney failure). At the present time the exact causes of Alabama Rot are unknown, although an environmental cause is considered possible it has not yet been confirmed. What we do know is that most cases occur in the winter (52%) and spring (40%) when the ground is wet and muddy. It is thought that only about 25% of the dogs who present with skin lesions (most commonly on the paws, underbelly, muzzle and tongue) actually go on to develop kidney failure. There have been several confirmed (and more suspected) cases in the local area, but as the actual cause is still unknown, it is

Ledbury Focus

Alabama Rot Update very difficult for us to give specific advice on which areas are best avoided when out walking; however the majority of previous cases have been walked in wet and muddy areas. Symptoms to look out for The first symptoms tend to appear on average three days after infection. These tend to be skin related but can include a lack of energy, poor appetite or vomiting. These are relatively common symptoms in our patients for other reasons as well, but if you are concerned please ring to speak to one of our vets.

to check regularly for any unexplained sores on their lower legs, paws, underside of the body and the tongue. If you have found any unexplained sores on your dogs, or are at all concerned or would just like some more information on this condition – please do not hesitate to call the surgery and ask to speak with one of our vets.

Our advice to owners We are advising owners to wash any part of their dog that becomes wet and muddy on a walk and

Girls' getaway weekend!

Garden Waste Collection Service

Four friends spend several weeks planning the perfect girls getaway trip . . . shopping, casinos, massages, facials etc. Two days before they are due to leave, Mary's husband puts his foot down and tells her she isn't going. Mary's friends are very upset that she can't go, but what can they do. Two days later the other three friends get to the hotel only to find Mary sitting in the bar drinking a glass of wine. "Wow, how long have you been here and how did you talk your husband into letting you come?" they asked. "Well, I've been here since last night." she replied. "Yesterday evening I was sitting on the couch when my husband came up behind me, put his hands over my eyes and said 'Guess who?'

I pulled his hands away to find all he was wearing was his birthday suit! He took my hand and led me into the bedroom. The room was scented with perfume, there were two dozen candles burning and rose petals scattered around the room, and on the bed . . . he had handcuffs and ropes. Then he told me tie and cuff him to the bed, so I did. And then he said, 'Now you can do whatever you want.' So I did . . . and here I am!"

10 Important Facts to Remember 1. Death is the No. 1 killer in the world. 2. Life is sexually transmitted. 3. Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die. 4. Men have two motivations: hunger and hanky-panky, and they can't tell them apart. If you see a gleam in his eyes . . . make him a sandwich. 5. Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks, months, maybe even years. 6. Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in the hospital, dying of nothing. 7. All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism. 8. In the 60's, people took LSD to make the world weird. Now the world is weird, and people take Prozac to make it normal. 9. Life is like a jar of jalapeno peppers. What you do today may be a burning issue tomorrow. 10. Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.

The anatomy of the knee joint The knee joins the thigh to the leg and consists of two joints the tibiofemoral joint and the patellofemoral joint. The knee is the largest joint in the human body. The function of the knee joint is to permit the flexion and extension of the lower leg relative to the thigh while supporting the body’s weight. Movements at the knee joint are essential to everyday activities, including walking, running, sitting and standing. The knee is a synovial hinge joint formed between three bones: the femur, tibia, and patella. Two rounded, convex processes (known as condyles) on the distal end of the femur meet two rounded, concave condyles at the proximal end of the tibia. The patella lies in front of the femur on the anterior surface of the knee with its smooth joint-forming processes on its posterior surface facing the femur. The joint-forming surfaces of each bone are covered with a thin layer of hyaline cartilage that gives them an extremely smooth surface and protects the underlying bone from damage. Between the femur and tibia is the meniscus a tough fibrocartilage acting as a shock absorber inside the knee to prevent the collision of the leg bones during strenuous activities.

The patella is held in place by the patellar ligament, which extends from the inferior border of the patella to the tibial tuberosity of the tibia. There are several other ligaments that support the functioning of the knee joint these include; the oblique popliteal ligament, arcuate popliteal ligament, medial collateral ligament (MCL), and the lateral collateral ligament (LCL). There are also two internal ligaments – the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments (ACL & PCL). These help to maintain the proper alignment of the knee. In addition to the joint capsule and ligaments that support the knee, there are also several important structures surrounding the knee that help cushion and protect the joint. The Bowen Knee Procedure The Bowen knee procedure works with the whole body in how is supports the knee joint and the knee’s supporting structures. In the procedure we address the Vastus Lateralis muscle which supports the Patella, the Patella itself is also worked with and the Vastus Medialis muscle which also supports the Patella and specific ligaments. The Gastrocnemius muscles are addressed which help drain any fluid on and around the knee and help to ease cramping in the lower leg and calves. Lastly, we address the Tibial Nerve and Neurovascular bundle on the ankle.

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

The Bowen Moves The Bowen moves are incredibly gentle and work with the nerves, muscles and ligaments surrounding the particular structure that we are working with. Often these moves will be sending a message back to the nervous system telling the body to re-balance itself. For more information on how Bowen works have a look at my website. Aftercare After the Bowen knee procedure, we recommend that clients do not heat, massage or exercise for one week. We also recommend that any swelling or fluid on the knee is drawn off using soda crystals. *see below. How I work in practice In a session, I may also use some of the other procedures that I have in order to impact upon the knee these could include; The Pelvic procedure which will help to rectify any pelvic imbalance which might be having an impact upon the knee joint. I will also often use the Kidney procedure which is related to the knee in terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine. I have seen pain diminish significantly and the knee become much more stable after the Bowen work. All of the supporting structures have been addressed by the knee procedure so they are all working together again to support this structure.

Self-help for fluid on the knee or any joint Soda Crystal pack Using a soda crystal pack is invaluable for any joint where there is fluid present. Simply wrap some soda crystals in a handkerchief and make a pad to be placed on the joint just below the patella. Use tape or a bandage to hold the pad in place and leave on over night or for at least 4 hours. (never put the crystals directly onto the skin). When the pack is taken off the crystals will be solid as they should have drained off the excess fluid on the joint. Support Using a support when undertaking activities that put a direct strain on the knee can be useful in some cases. It should be mentioned however that if serious injury is present here, anything that puts a strain on the joint or the supporting structures should generally be avoided. *If in doubt please get in touch with me to check that the self-help tips are applicable for you to try.
