Hello Readers... Welcome to the August edition of the Ledbury Focus. I hope you are enjoying the wonderful weather we are having, even though we could soon be facing hose-pipe bans! I know I’m probably tempting fate, but it would be nice to have a little bit of rain now and then, just so our poor gardens don’t die of heat.

Ledbury Focus Publisher & Advertising Grapevine Publications (Worcestershire) Ltd 3 Rye Street • Birtsmorton • WR13 6AS Tel: 01684 833715  Mob: 07754 170286 info@grapevinepublications.co.uk www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

Well, school holidays are with us again, and for some of you this means a welcome respite from rounding up your reluctant school kids and the early morning school run, and for them it means lazy days and a morning lie-in. Sounds so good it almost makes me wish I was still that age … note, I did say almost! If you are taking your family away on holiday, I hope you have brilliant weather and a great time.

If you are a keen gardener, you might recognise the front cover flower as a double poppy – which is what I’m told it is. I’m afraid I am the world’s worst gardener – I can’t tell a weed from a prize petunia, but fortunately my husband is an excellent gardener, so he is my go-to source for information on flowers and plants. This particularly pretty flower was photographed in our garden a few days ago and hasn’t yet succumbed to the excessive heat. Luckily we have a couple of large water barrels for collecting rain water, and although the water in them smells appalling, it’s keeping the garden alive for the time being.

he club director, Helen Dubovie has bèen searching for suitable premises in Ledbury for some time now and is thrilled to have secured sessions in the super sports hall at Ledbury Leisure Centre. Stars Gymnastics will offer sessions initially for boys and girls aged from 4 years. There will also be Performance Squads for 7 to 10 years and 11 years plus. In addition there will be opportunities for particularly committed boys and girls to enter our Elite Competitive Squads. Our motto is Enjoy and Excel. The coaches at Stars Gymnastics, all of whom are DBS screened and qualified, love gymnastics and are passionate about sharing their expertise in order to enhance each child's joy and attainment in gymnastics which they carry into their daily lives. Helen Dubovie is also Principal of Hereford Ballet School. The School branched out in Ledbury last September and classes have taken off brilliantly since then. These include Ballet, Tap and Gymnastic Dance. The students aged from 2 to 8 years, have made such swift progress that they were all invited to dance in The Greatest Showcase in Hereford alongside students from the main school based in Hereford. Speaking about the Showcase, Helen said " It was a wonderful occasion in which 100 children danced in class dances, solos, duets and small groups. We were extremely proud of our children who all danced brilliantly and it was such a happy occasion. We are family orientated , holding displays and gatherings for family and friends throughout the year."

Oh, What a Summer! A

cluster of fledgling blue tits hang from a suet feeder like bees clinging round their queen in a swarm. It has been like this since June, peak fledging time. In early summer every tree, bush and feeder was alive with fledglings fluttering their wings and twittering ‘feed me, feed me.’ Their parents dashed back and forth with beaks filled with food to stuff into their offsprings’ gapes. This is where feeders come in handy if you’re a harassed avian parent, so much easier to get the youngsters gathered near or on the feeding stations than to spend time and energy hunting for grubs. The goldfinches soon caught on to the idea, and were soon doing the same thing. Those young birds are still here tucking in with gusto, keeping me busy cleaning feeders on a weekly basis and filling nine daily. Wash day has taken on a whole new meaning. But it is important to keep the feeders clean for the health of the birds. Letting nature do its own thing and minimal management can have surprising and often delightful rewards. I left areas of long grass this year with only mown paths cut through them. A walk along these paths was to be delighted by clouds

of butterflies: ringlets, skippers, meadow browns, speckled wood and marble whites. Flashes of red revealed a cinnabar moth and further on a scarlet tiger moth. The southern marsh orchid grew for the first time in the paddocks and the common spotted orchid popped up in areas it hasn’t been before. The removal of the ‘wild wood’, a tangle of hybrid willows planted some twenty years go, rewarded me with a fabulous display of foxgloves which the bees loved. And a statuesque forest of welt thistle will keep the goldfinches happy on the seed heads in the autumn.

botanists and two conservation officers and several plantsmen, have revealed no identification of ‘pinky.’ All that anyone could be certain of was it was parasitic because it had no chlorophyll. Sadly pinky was badly scorched by the northerly winds we had in June and died before flowering, so what it was or where it came from remains a mystery. There might be a remote chance that pinky will return in the future, I hope so. I will certainly be looking out for another pinky. article and photograph by Geraldine Holbourn

Then a mystery appeared. Growing amongst a group of hellebores, incidentally another first for me, was a pink, orchid-like plant. And I don’t just mean the flower, the stem was pink, the leaves were pink. It was like nothing I’d seen before and was nicknamed ‘pinky’, the plant from mars.’ Hours of research, consultations with

Wine:

Choice Desserts

D

essert wines have been very popular through the ages and are generally a sweet wine that is enjoyed with, or after a meal. Sometimes served with the dessert of a meal, and afterwards, also, these productions continue to be chosen regularly and form part of the highlight of a dining occasion. Various well-known dessert wines, that are 'late harvested', incorporate 'noble rot' (Botrytis cinerea). Differing variations of dessert wines can be light in texture and others more powerful. The dessert wines can also be sparkling and fortified. Castelnau de Suduiraut (France) is a serious production. Fresh and with good balance, this is a very popular dessert wine. Intense fruits, for the mouthfeel, make this exceptional production very popular for many dining occasions.

Late Harvest Vistamar Moscatel (Chile) is a splendid wine from the LimarĂ Valley, which has perfect conditions for Moscatel grapes. This straw-yellow production has an excellent bouquet, plus a wonderful mouthfeel and palate of juicy fruits. A long finish adds to the pleasures of this very balanced wine.

Torres Floralis (Spain) is another popular dessert wine. The Torres family has, since 1946, been making Floralis-Moscatel Oro. This is reputedly one of the most charismatic dessert wines of the Mediterranean. The floral bouquet leads perfectly to the mouthfeel and sensual palate sensations.

Royal Tokaji (Hungary) is also extremely popular. Tokaji dessert wines have been a favourite since the 17th century; the indigenous grape varieties, combined with the hot summers and volcanic soils, plus expertise, come together to produce exceptional wines.

I located these productions and many more, at the award-winning Majestic Wine Company, which is dedicated and committed to customer satisfaction. Great advice, if required, from the very knowledgeable staff, about their wines, spirits, beers, ciders and non-alcoholic beverages, etc., is always available, plus free glass hire and delivery, with free tastings and discounts. There are opportunities to meet wine producers at the free tasting events. Online ordering is available, too. www.majestic.co.uk As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

Give me strength .... !! One day, three men were hiking and unexpectedly came upon a large, raging, violent river. They needed to get to the other side but had no idea how to do so. The first man prayed to God saying, "Please God, give me the strength to cross this river." Poof! God gave him big arms and strong legs and he was able to swim across the river in about two hours, after almost drowning. a couple of times. Seeing this, the second man prayed to God, saying, "Please God, give me the strength and the tools to cross this river." Poof! God gave him a rowboat and he was able to row across the river in about an hour after almost capsizing the boat several times. The third man had seen how this worked out for the other two so he also prayed to God saying, "Please God, give me the strength and the tools and the intelligence to cross this river." Poof! God turned him into a woman. And she looked at the map, hiked upstream a couple of hundred yards and walked across the bridge. ********

A Trio of Blondies .... !! Speeding Ticket A police officer stops a blonde for speeding and asks her very nicely if he could see her license. She replied in a huff, "I wish you guys would get your act together. Just yesterday you took away my license and then today you expect me to show it to you!" The Vacuum A blonde was playing Trivial Pursuit one night. It was her turn. She rolled the dice and she landed on "Science & Nature." Her question was: If you are in a vacuum and someone calls your name, can you hear it? She thought for a time and then asked, "Is it on or off?" Knitting A highway patrolman pulled alongside a speeding car on the freeway. Glancing at the car, he was astounded to see that the blonde behind the wheel was knitting! Realizing that she was oblivious to his flashing lights and siren, the trooper cranked down his window, turned on his bullhorn and yelled, "PULL OVER!" "NO," the blonde yelled back. "SCARF!”

the complex system of weights and gears which Live online bidding available www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk ensure the clock will have the highest level of accuracy. The example in Smiths sale was no exception and it was housed in a very functional rather than decorative case. It had been made by a retired Admiralty scientist who had been involved in developing the first underwater television to help search for the lost submarine HMS Affray which sank in rather mysterious circumstances with all hands in 1951. He was obviously a bit of a ‘boffin’ and in his later years had taken up the challenge of designing and making his own regulator wall clock. From previous experience I knew that these strange clocks can be very popular and so was not at all surprised that once the catalogue went on-line we had plenty of interest with email requests for further information and images. One buyer was very keen and sent several emails expressing his excitement and arranging to do a telephone bid. By auction day we had three telephone lines booked and the clock eventually sold for £4,200 to the delighted conversational collector. I have also had a further email telling me how pleased he is with his purchase –which is rather nice.

Country Ceramics head to the City!

S

arah Monk’s unique studio ceramics are currently on show at the Contemporary Ceramics Centre, a retail gallery, showcasing the best of British studio ceramics in the heart of London. Sarah explains: For the last 6 months I have been developing a new collection. My small batch studio ceramics feature new colours, new techniques, and new glazes. Creating the collection has been a winter-evening pursuit, when our busy Herefordshire Studio is closed to customers. By day we offer Pottery Experiences and have been doing so for the last 24 years. Having just a few hours at the end of a busy day really focuses the creative process for me! I am a designer-maker specializing in functional ceramics to fit comfortably in the home, particularly the kitchen (my favourite room in our house). Breakfast has been my starting point; berry bowls and spoons, toast racks and knife rests, egg cups with decorative storage boxes and bowls of all shapes and sizes. The whole range is mix and match. When making my own work, my approach is relaxed and playful, and I hope this translates through to the finished pieces. I love our studio space and make full-use of our facilities; from the electric potter’s wheels to the table spaces for hand-building and modelling - whatever takes my fancy! colour is brushed on, designs drawn into the surface and motifs applied, making the pieces tactile, a deliberate consideration. I restrict my pallet to blue and white slip on terracotta clay; it links everything together and has a country cottage appeal. All my making happens at the wet clay stage. After a biscuit firing I don’t add anything else to the surface except for a simple lead-free glaze Growing up, my Mum collected Watcombe Pottery. Over the years she managed to collect more than 400 pieces and they over-flowed from two dining-room dressers in our kitchen. I remember showing it to my school friends and enjoyed reading all the sgraffito sayings and looking at the vibrant slip-trailed patterns. My plan this year has been to fill a dresser at Eastnor Pottery with my own slipware designs, revelling in the easy-going feel of a country potter. In fact, I have already filled this dresser…..maybe I need to get a second one too! www.instagram.com/sarah_monk_ceramics/

I went to the cemetery yesterday to lay some flowers on a grave. As I was standing there I noticed four grave diggers walking about with a coffin - three hours later and they're still walking about with it. I thought to myself, they've lost the plot!! .......... My daughter asked me for a pet spider for her birthday, so I went to our local pet shop and they were £70! Blow this, I thought, I can get one cheaper off the web. .......... I start a new job in Seoul next week. I thought it was a good Korea move. .......... I was driving this morning when I saw a parked RAC van. The driver was sobbing uncontrollably and looked very miserable. I thought to myself, that guy's heading for a breakdown. .......... My neighbour knocked on my door at 2:30am this morning, can you believe that, 2:30am! Luckily for him I was still up playing my bagpipes. .......... I was explaining to my wife last night that when you die you get reincarnated but must come back as a different creature. She said she would like to come back as a cow. I said "You're obviously not listening." .......... When I was in the pub I heard a couple of plonkers saying that they wouldn't feel safe on an aircraft if they knew the pilot was a woman. What a pair of sexists. I mean, it's not as if she'd have to reverse the darn thing! .......... A teddy bear is working on a building site. He goes for a tea break and when he returns he notices his pick has been stolen. The bear is angry and reports the theft to the foreman. The foreman grins at the bear and says "Oh, I forgot to tell you, today's the day the teddy bears have their pick nicked."

Debs & Beth riding

London to Paris for Women’s Cancers

aving always been a H keen cyclist I saw this challenge and

opportunity as something I had to do, especially as it finishes on my 50th birthday - which having had very aggressive, advanced breast cancer aged 43, followed by a melanoma - was a day I never thought I would see. My daughter, Beth, and I are cycling 240miles from London to Paris over three days to raise money for women’s cancer charities: Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action. We start on 19th September and finish up in Paris on 23rd September. It felt incredibly important for many reasons to do this big sponsored bike ride, some personal to our family, but some more relevant to me as a local GP in Ledbury, and to my daughter Beth as a potential future doctor. We wanted to raise the profile of the diseases and

42

charities we were fundraising for by getting people around us talking and more aware of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and cervical cancer, and sharing information and the work of the charities where we can. Naturally we want to raise as much money as we can to try and support any person or family who may be going through such a tough and often lonely time, which we remember all too well - it never leaves you –and anything we can do to help has to be positive. Another reason was to emphasise to those who read our story, that with great support and determination, despite having significant health issues, you can still face new challenges in life. Illness changes you and affects you so much, but you can still make a difference and not let it define you, and even take positives from these tough experiences.

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

Finally this massive bike ride has been a great way to share a challenge with someone who cares and understands so much about all this. It has also been a positive challenge to get so fit and see great places on a bike. Sharing it all and supporting one another has been very special for Beth and I, as a mum and daughter who have faced so much together, along with my lovely husband Chris and son, Jamie. We have been totally and utterly overwhelmed by the support we have received for our venture. Patients, family and friends have all been incredibly generous in so

many ways. Local pharmacy Day Lewis have been amazing, raising so much money, and other local businesses such as The Sitara, Ledbury MOT & Exhaust Centre, Gerry Doverman’s Garage ( Hereford) and Alexander Park, have all been very generous with sponsorship. The Verzons Hotel and Raft in Ledbury have some ideas to support us soon too. Eastnor Lodge have also given us a generous donation. We cannot thank everyone enough and it a means a huge amount to us that people have been so supportive of our efforts.

I feel lucky and privileged to be here to do all this, especially for such good reasons and with my lovely girl, Beth, and supported always by the boys at home! We have now raised nearly ÂŁ8000. Any further donations would be greatly appreciated, and can be made at Market Street surgery where I work , or via our Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/fundraising /debra-hiley. Thank you for reading and for your support.

What to see this month Though the countryside may seem sleepy this month, an early start will reward you with sight and sound of lots of young birds in gardens and hedgerows which have successfully fledged this year. Other birds may have begun their autumn migration so you may spot these visitors as they pass through. Sandpipers are one example of this and you may catch sight of them in wetland areas such as the Lugg Valley.

Butterfly numbers should also remain high (if the good weather we are experiencing at the time of writing continues!) with meadow brown, common blue and brown argus, on the wing. Down on the river bank – or maybe around your garden pond – dragonflies and damselflies are buzzing. Check out the Dragon and damselflies spotter sheets downloadable from www.wildlifewatch.org.uk. Young grass snakes and slow worms may be basking in sunny spots. Don’t be alarmed, they are perfectly harmless and a sign of a healthy habitat. Slow worms can be found in heathland, tussocky grassland, woodland edges and rides:

Grass snakes are often found in damper areas and can also be spotted swimming in ponds or rivers!

What to do this month Try to keep some clean water available for your garden birds to drink and bath in. Anything from a washing up bowl to an ornate bird bath will do the job though if it can be located up off the ground and away from predators that is ideal.

Rather than striding briskly though a wood along a footpath, Forest Bathing ensures you move slowly, noticing the sights, sounds and smells all around you, soaking up the atmosphere. Listen for the bird song, the leaves in the wind and the rustles in the undergrowth and you may be surprised at how much you notice! . . . /continued on page 46

What Turns Aroma Into Therapy?

W

e all know that massage can help with aches and pains, but did you know that it can be twice as good when aromatic oils are used? This - as I'm sure you all know - is aromatherapy, and it has been around for many years. It is one of the fastest-growing areas of alternative medicine, particularly with the nursing community. Each oil contains its own distinct qualities, aromas and fragrances, and most are used in conjunction with others to create a specific result, such as soothing anxiety and stress, easing nausea, or relieving headaches. Essential oils are also used for beauty, healing and pleasure, and are extracted from the oil glands in plants, trees, and flowers. These oils can offer a wealth of benefits when massaged into the skin. The oil molecules are absorbed through the pores, affecting the skin, the bloodstream, and the whole body, including the brain. Ledbury Focus

I had my first experience of aromatherapy five years ago when my arthritis was particularly bad. The oils the masseur used were a mixture of coriander, cypress and lemongrass, and I was quite surprised just how relaxing it was. As the massage progressed a strange thing happened: quite unexpectedly tears started to pour from my eyes. The masseur explained that it was a release of tension I had been told that the aroma from the oils relaxes you, but I hadn't expected tears. There are so many different oils used in many natural ways. Why not try an aromatic bath to release stress? First run your bath, then add 15 drops of a blend of lavender, rose and wild orange oils; stir around to mix the oils evenly, but do not use soap. Just relax, inhale and enjoy the aroma while your body absorbs the oils. After your bath you will feel relaxed and in a lovely mood. Tea tree

oil is one of my favourites - it’s a natural antiseptic and I can highly recommend it for all kinds of bites, including the dreaded mosquito. Essential oils can play a part in enhancing your emotional outlook on life. Citrus essential oils are often thought of for their light, summery aromas, but I use them all year round. The aroma of the citrus increases during the colder months and I find them energizing and help to uplift the spirits. They are the perfect complement of blends that fight off the winter blues, and depression. The oil I use most of all is lavender - I sprinkle it on my pillow at night and it relaxes me as I drift off to sleep. In today's stressful times, and hectic lifestyles, we all need ways to relax and gain a sense of inner peace and well-being, so why not give aromatic oils a try. article by Pamela Green

MOTORISTS: Is your vehicle 'summer ready'?

W

ith the school holidays in full swing and the warm weather set to stick around for the next month at least, the Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia is reminding motorists to be prepared for any long journeys and stay safe in the event of a breakdown.

journeys, plan your route to include a 15 minute break every two hours.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead this summer and avoid unnecessary breakdowns by ensuring their vehicle is wellmaintained before setting out on any long journeys. As well as checking to make sure the vehicle service is up to date, motorists should check tyre pressures and oil, water and fuel levels and top those up if needed. With temperatures expected to stay high for the next month, motorists should carry plenty of water, food and other essentials such as sunglasses and sunscreen.

Anna Higgins, Communications Manager at the Safer Roads Partnership said "Breaking down can be a stressful experience, especially on a motorway where traffic is passing at very high speeds. It is vital that motorists know what to do if their vehicle does breakdown, to keep themselves and their passengers safe.

With many people taking to the roads for long drives to their summer holiday destinations, motorists are reminded to avoid driving when tired. On longer

58

The partnership is also asking motorists if they know what to do in a breakdown and urging them to follow some simple steps to ensure they stay safe, particularly when travelling on motorways.

"If your vehicle breaks down on the motorway, pull on to the hard shoulder as far to the left as possible with your wheels turned to the left, and put your hazard lights on to warn other motorists. If visibility is poor, you should also leave your side lights on. You and your passengers should exit the vehicle on the left hand side and

move to a point of safety behind the barrier and well away from the vehicle, the carriageway and the moving traffic. If possible, move up the bank or verge, as far away from the hard shoulder as possible." Find your nearest emergency telephone on your side of the carriageway and call for assistance. The marker posts at the side of the motorway help give an exact location of your vehicle and also show the direction of the nearest telephone. The telephone is free and connects directly to Highways England or police who will be able to contact your chosen breakdown company. If you do use your mobile phone, take a note of the number of the nearest marker post - it will help to pinpoint where you are on the motorway. Wait for assistance, but remember to wait behind the barrier and as far away from the carriageway as possible. If you cannot get your vehicle on to the hard shoulder, switch

on your hazard lights and do not attempt to place any warning device on the carriageway. Leave your vehicle only when you can safely get clear of the carriageway.

expensive or electrical items on show in the rubbish collection for thieves to see, break the packaging up and hide it within the rubbish or take it to a tip.

PROTECT YOUR HOME WHILE YOU ARE AWAY ON HOLIDAY Homeowners are encouraged to consider the following advice when leaving their property unoccupied:

• Make it look like you are at home. Set lights on a timer switch, in a room such as the living room or bedroom. Use more than one timer to come on at different times.

• Keep windows and external doors locked whenever you are out of the house, and get into the habit of checking. This includes even small windows which burglars could reach through to gain access. • Keep keys, purses/wallets and other valuable items away from windows and doors, so they are not visible or accessible to opportunist thieves. • Invest in a good quality alarm. The police 59 recommend that alarm companies should be a member of the SSAIB or NSI. External alarm boxes act as a good visual deterrent. • Make sure you have good locks fitted on doors and windows (and don't forget to use them!) Also have a door chain fitted. • Don't keep large amount of cash at home. Store valuable items such as passports or jewellery in a safe. • Don't leave packaging for

Ledbury Focus

• Make sure your property is marked. If it is it will be much harder for a thief to sell it, and if it is recovered it can be returned to you- look up forensic property marking for more information. • If you are going away for a few days ask a trusted neighbour, family member or friend to keep an eye on your home, and do the same for them. • If you are going on holiday or are away for a period of time, don't make it too obvious that you are away from your home. Cancel any milk, newspapers or regular deliveries. Don't announce your plans on social media • If you see anyone acting suspiciously, contact the police on 101. If a crime is taking place or if someone is in danger call 999. • Join your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme to meet those living in your street, pass on crime prevention advice and resolve local issues

FESTIVAL SAFETY This month marks the beginning of the large music festivals for this summer. It doesn't matter if it's a large event or a smaller local event, you are there to have a good time, but some people may have other intentions! Follow this crime prevention advice, and make sure that they don't spoil your fun. DON'T: • Leave valuables in your car or tent. • Bury valuables near your tent - someone may be watching you. • Put a padlock on your tent this suggests you have something worth stealing. DO: • Keep valuables, including medicines, with you at all times. • Mark your tent and other property with your name and postcode and consider using a property marking solution. • Split your cash so that if you lose one lot, you have back up. • Drink sensibly so you don't miss place yourself or your items. CONSIDER: • Placing your wallet / phone in your front pockets. • Placing cash in a money belt. Have a great time!

Ledbury Horticultural Society 2018 Annual Flower Show Monday 27th August

L

edbury Horticultural Society will be holding its annual Flower Show in the Community Centre on Carnival Day, Monday 27th August. Admission is 50p and doors open at 12 noon. Prize-giving will take place at 4.30pm. Since 1999, the Society has donated over £10,000 to both local and national charities including: Ledbury Community Hospital, St. Michael’s Hospice, Air Ambulance, Haven Trust, Meningitis Trust, Pals after School Club, Acorns, Guide dog for the Blind, C.V.A., Scout Group and Macmillan Cancer Support. The chosen charities for 2018 are Salters Hill - who support people with learning disabilities and their families - and Ledbury in Bloom, part of the RHS Britain in Bloom Campaign. By coming along to the show, you will be helping to raise funds for these worthwhile local causes.

This is more than just a Flower Show; there is something for the whole family. If you do not wish to enter one of the many classes then just come along on the day and spend an enjoyable time viewing the various exhibits . . . and the best cream teas and cakes will be available so we hope you’ll join us! If you would like any further information or a copy of the schedule, please contact Kelvin Lynch, Show Secretary on 07875 478484. Schedules are also available from the Ledbury Hardware Store or the Ledbury Newsagent in the Homend, Ledbury.

The success of the show very much depends on the support of those who take part by entering one or more classes for a bit of fun! Do you grow fruit or vegetables? Are you a keen photographer? Do you bake or enjoy handicrafts? Are the kids creative? If so, do look through the show schedule and put something on the show-bench! There is a range of classes for everyone – no matter what your ability. The judges are a very friendly bunch and some will leave comments to encourage you to enter again. Ledbury Focus

ere are Leadon Vale Veterinary Centre, we pride ourselves in providing the very best of care to all pets, farm animals and horses in and around the Ledbury area. We have an extensive team of Veterinary Surgeons, Registered Veterinary Nurses, Student Veterinary Nurses and Administration and Reception Staff. This means that there is always a friendly, helpful member of our team on the other end of the telephone when you need us for a routine appointments, emergency situations or even just some advice and reassurance. It is also worth noting that should you need us out of hours, we do our own 24-hour emergency cover, this means that you will speak to our own duty Vet. We are very excited to announce that from July we will be offering appointments with one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses – Philippa Clarke RVN. Initially, Philippa will be running Weight Management Clinics for those pets that have put on a weight recently – this will involve a strict feeding regime with special calorie controlled food and regular weigh-ins. She will also be carrying out Post Operative Dental Clinics (4 to 5 days after your pet has had a general anaesthetic and professional Ledbury Focus

A bit about the practice and some exciting news dental work has been carried out). In these appointments we will be discussing the home care options available to reduce the frequency of dental work being required. There will also be some routine consultation appointments offered by Philippa; these will include nail clipping. These appointments will be held at the surgery on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon between 12pm and 2pm. If you would like to book an appointment with Philippa, please telephone the surgery and speak to a member of our team.

Also a seasonal warning With all the warm weather we are experiencing, we would just to like to reiterate the dangers of leaving dogs unattended in cars. The inside of a car can quickly heat up once the windows are closed and the air conditioning is switched off. Please ensure all pets (especially those in hutches) have access to shaded areas and clean fresh water at all times. Avoid walking your dogs in the middle of the day when the weather is at its hottest – the best time to walk is early morning or later in the evening.

In human terms we have skin grafts, where we take a section of skin from one area of the body and transfer it onto another section of the body to encourage it to grow over a damaged area. This is basically the same scenario but with plants.

From the commercial side of things, a specimen that is very slow growing can have a big mother plant, which is an advantage because there is a lot of it and you can prune it hard, for example a Contorted Hazel. You can take a wild Hazel plant root and stock, and graft a large section of very slow growing Contorted Hazel onto it, creating a lot of plants reasonably quickly for re-sale. The most common plants that are grafted nowadays are roses. You hear people saying “it has reverted back, it has sent up suckers”, and this is because they have used a wild root stock or a rose that has a very good root system (which is preferable when it comes to roses) and the variety required is grafted onto that strong stem. So, the disadvantage is that it can send up suckers and revert back because the wild root stock is stronger than the main plant.

So what is Grafting? Grafting is used to improve a plant that is very slow growing, or doesn’t produce very good seed, or very good cuttings. You take the mother plant that has Various ways of doing this grown - this is a ‘true’ plant of its However the advantages are, that variety - and take a section of that This can be achieved from a bud cutting to a root. It is complex because these plants are slow plant and glue it, through cuts growing and it is hard to produce and very hard to explain all the and by taping it, onto a different new plants from seeds, etc. different methods, but what are plant of the same family, or host (because of the time it takes), plant. thecall advantages disadvantages To advertise 01684 and 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk 70 The ‘graft’ fuses itself

this option brings the price down because the plants can be mass produced. Another variety of plant for grafting is an acer. If you get a wild green acer that grows very quickly you can graft onto it. The most common form of grafting is to cut out an inverted ‘V’ from your chosen plant, and on the root stock cut out another ‘V’, that slots together with the ‘V’ of your chosen plant, and then bind them together. This is why sometimes - certainly on roses - little bits of wax can be found, because wax is used to seal the joint and stop disease getting in. Nowadays it is more common to buy grafting secateurs which will precisely cut all the sections, fix them into place and automatically wrap them for you.

What are the other advantages? You could have a fruit tree, for example a pear, and graft a different variety of pear onto each branch of the host plant. This was very common with Victorian gardeners when they were starting to experiment with these processes. You could have a rose with blooms of a different colour on each branch. Grafting really took off from this era onwards. When you are looking for a plant at a Garden Centre Don’t be put off if there is a lump on the stem, or because you can see a ‘V’ section on the plant. This only means that it has been grafted onto a hardier host plant. It will be perfectly strong, and there is no disease just because it might be a slightly different colour. What you must avoid doing is putting the graft under the ground when planting, if it is a tree etc. as that is obviously a point where disease could get in or even rot out the graft. If your rose is producing suckers from the root stock your best bet is to dig down to the root and try to tear this off the root stock, otherwise there is a chance it will grow much quicker and take over the plant.

n this article I share with you some information on the psoas muscle as it plays such an important role in supporting the balance and overall health of the body. Location of the psoas The psoas (pronounced so-az) is a deep core muscle approximately 16 inches long. It directly links the ribcage and trunk with the legs. The muscle is located on either side of the body and most people have a psoas major and a psoas minor. The psoas minor is thought to be a disappearing muscle however as we have evolved from a semi-flexed to an upright being. It is possible to have a psoas minor on one side, one on both sides or none at all! The psoas does not attach directly to the pelvis but indirectly through its attachment to the iliacus muscle which lines the pelvic basin. The psoas and iliacus muscles are often spoken of together as the iliopsoas. Function of the psoas The muscle is basically a hip

flexor and it supports the free swing of the leg in walking and plays an important role in transferring weight through the trunk into the legs and feet. More importantly, it acts as a guide wire stabilising the entire spine. The psoas also acts like a shelf providing support for the organs and viscera. The health, length and vitality of the psoas effects organ function, for example: whether there is room within the pelvic bowl for the organs to rest comfortably and function normally depends on the length and tone of the psoas muscle. Lastly the psoas functions as a hydraulic pump; its movement stimulates and pushes fluids in and out of cells. In normal walking, the psoas muscle is activated in each step as it contracts and stretches. Its normal movement stimulates the viscera and massages the spinal column. The ability of the psoas to move freely encourages a continuous, unobstructed flow of blood through the major arteries into the legs and feet.

Situations that can affect Psoas balance Pregnancy and childbirth – if the psoas is not fully engaged it will affect how a woman carries her baby. Structural imbalance during pregnancy and caused at the time of childbirth could cause the psoas to weaken.

• Back problems

Female cycles – women experiencing cramping and other pelvic problems could have an imbalanced psoas. Many women have experienced significant relief by using techniques to release the psoas muscle so it can do its job easily and freely supporting rather than hindering the reproductive organs, nerves and ligaments.

• Respiratory issues

Trauma – accidents of any kind can cause the psoas to contract and shorten; some people can feel the psoas contract for example, in a car when you brake suddenly. More often than not the psoas will recover from things like the car braking suddenly but in more serious accidents some therapeutic intervention is necessary. Whiplash injuries often respond very well to psoas work. Fear – when the fear reflex is activated the psoas will contract this has significant implications for the balance of the muscle and the impact stress can have upon it. Dehydration – this will cause the psoas muscle to shorten so staying hydrated is essential. Exercise – certain types of exercise and activities tend to shorten and contract the psoas muscle these include; horse riding, cycling, abdominal crunches to name a few. Results of psoas imbalance Some of the problems that could arise with a shortened psoas include: • Structural problems • Digestive problems • Issues with the pelvis • Hip problems • Mobility issues

Ledbury Focus

• Circulatory issues • Balance problems • Knee and ankle problems • PMS • Digestive problems • Sciatica How you can help your psoas Constructive rest position An exercise that encourages the psoas muscle to lengthen, it involves lying on the floor with your knees bent at a 45-degree angle. This is something I show clients in practice. For more information on how to do this please be in touch. Keep hydrated When we are dehydrated the psoas muscle will become shorter so keeping hydrated is essential. The body will use the hydration it has to send to the major organs and carry out its essential tasks. The muscular system tends to be lower down on the hydration priority list. If you experience regular muscle pain try drinking more water and see if this alleviates the pain. Have a treatment The Bowen Technique can address the psoas either directly by using the specific psoas procedure or indirectly by using the pelvic and kidney procedures. Sometimes working with the muscle indirectly is more suitable for an individual than directly applying the psoas procedure. This will vary for each individual in terms of what is being experienced and for how long the symptoms or imbalance have been present. I will also show you some exercise that can have a positive impact upon the muscle and symptoms arising as a result of imbalance.

Crohn’s & Colitis increasing in Young People

I

n the UK one person is diagnosed with IBD – Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis – every 30 minutes; and one in every four of these is under 16. This is a shocking statistic for diseases that never used to affect the young. IBD is often called the “invisible illness” because people can look fine and still be very ill and struggling with the most ordinary of daily tasks. This can cause isolation and frustration when people don’t understand and assume that if you look well you must be well. Hayley Jones from Ledbury was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis when she was 15 years old and at school at John Masefield High School in Ledbury. Here she talks about what it was like for her. “I found school OK with IBD because I received brilliant care from the staff. I had a lot of time off during Year 10 and work was sent home for me, so I wasn’t left behind. I was given access to staff toilets, which was the biggest help, and my teachers were made aware of my condition and told not to worry if I suddenly went to the toilet, which saved me embarrassment. The worst thing about Ulcerative Colitis was feeling helpless with no energy. I did miss out on going out with friends, but they would come to my home and watch films, etc. Medication can have side effects but you need to

78

persevere as they do work in the long term. At one point I could hardly walk, but since being on Humira things are under control and not inhibiting my life. I keep positive and have received fantastic care from the NHS – both my local GP in Ledbury and Hereford Gastroenterology team. I am lucky that I have had a fulltime job since leaving Sixth form, so I have been able to live a normal life. My employer understands my condition and supports me when I need time off for medical appointments. My office is near the toilets, which is a great help; and I know that I have to rest more than the usual person - or fatigue takes hold. I think the best thing is talking about my experiences – this really helped with mental well-being when going through rough patches. It’s important as you can easily give up and become a recluse.” In 2013 Hayley was one of the first volunteers for the new Herefordshire Group of Crohn’s & Colitis UK – and the youngest.

She is now helping to organise the Group’s biggest event to date: a “Funday Sunday” Fete at Bartestree Village Hall on 9th September from 11am to 4pm. The fete aims to raise awareness of IBD and bring people from across the county together. Over 850 adults in Herefordshire have been diagnosed, and thousands more friends and family are also affected by the disease. Anyone can come along to the fete - it’s free, with lots of things for all the family to do, including stalls with old-fashioned games, live music, information, storytelling and food. If you’d like more information on the local group, you can contact Herefordshire@net works.crohnsandcolitis.org.uk or the helpline service 0300 222 5700.

The Bell Ringers After Quasimodo's death, the bishop of the Cathedral of Notre Dame decided that he would personally interview the new bell ringers in the belfry.

a ery, gst

After observing several applicants, he had decided to call it a day. Just then, an armless man approached him and announced that he was there to apply for the bell ringer's job.

views

The bishop was incredulous. "But you have no arms!" he said. "No matter," said the man. "Observe!" And he began striking the bells with his face, producing a beautiful melody on the carillon. The bishop listened in astonishment; convinced he had finally found a replacement for Quasimodo. But suddenly, the armless man tripped and plunged headlong out of the belfry window to his death in the street below. The stunned bishop rushed to his side. 2JW

When he reached the street, a crowd had gathered around the fallen figure. As they silently parted to let the bishop through, one of them asked, "Bishop, who was this man?".

The following day, despite the sadness that weighed heavily on his heart due to the unfortunate death of the armless campanologist, the bishop continued his interviews for the bell ringer of Notre Dame. The first man to approach him said, "Your Excellency, I am the brother of the poor armless wretch who fell to his death from this very belfry yesterday. I pray that you honour his life by allowing me to replace him in this duty" The bishop agreed to give the man an audition, and, as the armless man's brother stooped to pick up a mallet to strike the first bell, he groaned, clutched at his chest, twirled around, and died on the spot. Two monks, hearing the bishop's cries of grief at this second tragedy, rushed up the stairs to his side. "What has happened? Who is this man?" the first monk asked breathlessly "I don't know his name," sighed the distraught bishop, "but . . . he's a dead ringer for his brother".
