The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy

of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the towns and villages in and around the Evesham

The Worcestershire Grapevine

& Pershore area and manager Paul Papandreou agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Five Ways to Well-Being . . . through volunteering

P

ershore Volunteer Centre is pleased to be supporting Wychavon’s well-being initiative. Connect Volunteering is a great way to connect with the people around you and your local community, which can enrich your life and lead to ongoing friendships. Spend your time with like-minded people eg in a charity shop supporting your favourite cause, at Number 8 or in the library. Take time to connect with a youngster in care, someone at our Wednesday lunch club or one of the local groups for individuals who need other support. “I enjoy phone befriending as I can really focus on helping someone and fit it in around work.” Be Active Enjoy the outdoors, keep fit and discover how much you can do by volunteering at Avon Meadows, working as a lock keeper on the river, or leading a Health Walk. Dig, sow and weed at Holland House or Spetchley Gardens; or for even more of a work out join the team at Tiddesley Wood.

Take Notice Be curious about the world and notice what matters to you - then find a cause that matches your interest and see how you can help. Whether you volunteer annually at events like the Plum Festival, regularly in an office as an administrator or occasionally on a fundraising team, you can make a real difference. Sign up for a renewed sense of purpose and self-esteem, as well as having a great time! “Thank you for putting me in touch with the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust. I am loving my admin role there.” Keep Learning Rediscover an old interest, take on a challenge or bring your skills to new environments. Gain confidence as you try new things. “I received excellent training from Age UK. The role is very rewarding and the clients are genuinely very grateful. I have since taken on another volunteering role as a Trustee. I strongly recommend volunteering to get you out

and about, active and keep learning, in a worthwhile way." Give Volunteering your time to help someone else is one of the best gifts that you can offer. Our car and minibus drivers report that taking an elderly resident to the shops or a social event gives them great satisfaction as it makes a big difference to someone who would otherwise be isolated. Clients say: “Thank you so much for your assistance, I do not know how I would manage without your support.” To find out more about the volunteering roles that we have on offer, contact us on 01386 554299, email admin@pershorevolunteers. org. or visit the office at 1 Billing House, Pershore WR10 1EY “The volunteer recruitment process exceeded my expectations and they found me a brilliant place to spend my time and share my skills. Thank You.” Registered charity 516080

“As a volunteer you meet some really good characters and nice people. I’m helping them and they are helping me as I have to do something with my time and keep active otherwise I get restless and stressed out at home.”

Our Land Girls

T

he National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire has over 300 tributes and statues to commemorate service personal across the two world wars. My husband Michael, and I visited the Arboretum and were astonished by it's size, and how many different home front services were now honoured. At the end of our visit we were surprised when we came across a memorial to the Woman's Land Army. It was a striking statue with two Land Girls smiling bravely, and carrying farm implements. At their feet were several gruesome instruments, one of which was a gin trap, for catching rats. The Women's Land Army (WLA) was first established in World War 1, but was re-formed shortly before the outbreak of World War 2. At that time, Britain relied a great deal on food brought in from other countries, and it was thought that imports would be threatened by German blockades. In addition many male farm workers were expected to join up, leaving a shortage of farm labour. The Government was keen to increase food production, hence the Women's Land Army was again needed. There were two sections of the WLA: the Land Girls, who mainly did farm work, and the Timber Corps who tended the forests, keeping the home fires burning.. Initially Land Girls were paid a minimum wage of ÂŁ1.85 for a 50 hour week, but later this was increased to ÂŁ2.85. Through the war years there were more than 80,000 women working the land. My mother and her sister were Land Girls, and I can still remember running wild in the fields and watching them work. They had a large range of jobs, including milking cows with strange half covered buckets, and delivering the milk. They were also

14

expected to cope with handling heavy horses, driving tractors, muck spreading, taking care of the lambing, as well as all the poultry. There was also crop gathering, ditch digging, rat catching, roof thatching, bee keeping, and farm maintenance. They worked long hours, especially during the summer months, and these are the times I can remember the most; but they also worked in the cold, rain, and frost of the winter. What a life they had, but they were always cheerful. I can remember the badge my mother wore - it resembled a sheaf of wheat, as a symbol of their agricultural work. There was even an official magazine 'The Land Girls', and they also had their own special song: Back to the land we must all lend a hand, To the farms and the fields we must go. There's a job to be done, Though we can’t fire a gun, We can still do our bit with a hoe. At the end of the war the men were demobbed, and the farm hands returned to the cottage we lived in, so we had to leave, but I will never forget that time. I was so proud to see the tribute to the WLA at the National Memorial Arboretum. It is a special place of peace and remembrance, and for us to never forget all those who did their bit for our country. Entrance is free and if you would like to visit you can find details on their website; www.thenma.org.uk article and photos by Pamela Green

7 Ways to Reduce Body Fat

G

ot body fat? While fat loss can be quite frustrating, these 7 strategies are proven to help you slim down fast, which is something that we all need with Christmas approaching. 1) Drink more Water Water is always a crucial element for proper bodily functions and even more so when fat loss is your goal. The conversion of fat into energy takes place in your liver and this process requires that you be well hydrated. Drinking plenty of water, at least 2 litres over the course of your day is a wonderful goal to aim for. This goal is easily met when you get into the habit of sipping water throughout the day, coupled with drinking a full glass before meals, upon waking and before bed. 2) Cut out Alcohol This fat loss tip is always met with groans (especially difficult

16

over the festive season), but despite its unpopularity it remains one of the most effective. The first reason that alcohol should be cut out in order to lose fat is that it’s filled with empty calories. These are simple sugars that taste great but add up quickly as stored fat in all the wrong places. The second reason that alcohol should be cut out is that the simple energy that your body derives from the alcohol will be used as energy long before your fat stores are tapped, making it impossible to reduce body fat on days when alcohol is consumed. That should be incentive enough for you to put down your glass and reach for some water. 3) Do a Variety of Cardio Variety is key when it comes to the cardio side of your routine. Getting in calorie-burning activities is crucial to quickly

eliminating fat stores. We no longer believe that long cardio sessions are the holy grail of fat loss – but getting your body moving with calorie-burning activities is a wonderful way to intensify your fat loss results. The great thing about cardio activities is that these can and should be fun! Hiking, biking, swimming, jogging, brisk walking – any activity that requires you to move your body for a decent duration of time and break a nice sweat in the process. 4) Cut out Processed Junk This is one of the easiest ways to quickly and effectively reduce body fat, and yet it is met with such resistance. Why? Why is it so difficult for us to give up our packaged, processed snacks and treats? This is one obstacle that prevents most people from achieving the body that they want.

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

muscle translates to a higher metabolism, which means that your body will naturally burn fat faster and more efficiently.

The best tip for successfully getting processed junk food out of your life is to have wholesome alternatives on hand while removing the junk food from your home. If you are a late night snacker, then be prepared by having fresh fruit, sliced vegetables, plain Greek yogurt or other wholesome snack replacements on hand. When your belly is full of wholesome snacks, it’s hard to care too much about the processed junk you missed out on. And soon you’ll learn to love how lean and energetic these healthier foods make you feel.

6) Use HIIT High Intensity Interval Training is a method that has been quite popular in the past decade – and for good reason. This advanced form of aerobics, when done correctly, is one of the most effective methods for burning fat. HIIT is achieved by performing short, intense bursts of aerobic intervals between less intense bouts of aerobics. For example, 2 minutes of walking followed by a 30 second sprint, done for 20 minutes.

7) Work with a Fitness Professional When your car needs new brakes, you take it the mechanic. When you wake up with a fever and sore throat, you go to the doctor. When your hair gets too long, you go to get it cut. When you need to reduce body fat, you . . . try to do it all on your own? That makes no sense. We all have our expertise and we rely on each other when in need. My expertise is fat loss. I’m passionate about helping all our clients get results, and our programmes have been proven effective. If you want to get in shape and are interested in one of our transformation programmes or would like to come along for a FREE trial, then go to www. almfitness.co.uk for more information. Alternatively call Amy on 07740 366419 or email amy@ almfitness.co.uk

5) Lift Weights You might consider this to be pretty obvious, but many people are still resistant to the idea that resistance training leads to fat loss. If you find yourself puzzled by the idea that lifting heavy things will reduce the layer of fat on your body, then allow me to explain. The act of lifting weights causes those targeted muscles to stimulate new muscle tissue growth. Now this doesn’t mean that your muscles are going to get noticeably larger (relax, ladies!) but it does mean that your muscle tissue will become tighter and more toned. Mixed Wine Matters A

s a convenience retailer, the Co-op is relied upon to provide food, beverages and household requirements at a moment's notice, whilst offering other services, too. For many, many years, the Co-op has satisfied millions and millions of delighted customers. Now, the Co-op is showing real commitment to being a leading retailer of beers, wines and spirits, several of which are award-winning. From Portugal Escudo Real Vinho Verde regularly pleases wine lovers. The white wine is great to drink on its own and to accompany many dishes, also. If al fresco dining is an option, this slightly sparkling production will not disappoint. Spain has many wines, too. I located MarquĂŠs de Valido Gran Reserva Rioja. This wine has a lot of devotees and, as a matured red from the region, is extremely popular for numerous dining occasions. Wonderful to accompany a good number of dishes, including Sunday roasts. France has been a favoured wine producer for centuries and I am very much impressed with the Les Launes Delas Crozes-Hermitage wine production. This is a regular choice for many, with dark fruits being very apparent on the nose, mouthfeel and palate. For Italy's wines I do like Chianti, and Villa Boscorotondo Chianti Classico Riserva impresses

me. This much loved wine adorns many dining tables and accompanies numerous dishes of cuisine superbly. Good for ageing. From Germany, for me, it has to be riesling. The Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Riesling Kabinett receives my vote. A most pleasant bouquet leads, enticingly, to the mouthfeel and palate sensations. Wonderful to pair with white meats, fish, seafood and many other dishes. Champagne is always a favourite to add that extra 'something' to a dining occasion or event. Les Pionniers Vintage Champagne is, I find, a most splendid blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grape varieties. On its own or to accompany cuisine, with its long finish, this is one for the 'top table'. As part of the membership promotion, customers can be rewarded for buying own label beers, wines and spirits. The Co-op is committed to supporting global communities via Fairtrade. These selections are just some of the many choices available. Please visit the website for all details. www.coop.co.uk As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

Halloween & Lucky Black Cats

W

ith the autumn here and winter on its way this is an important time to consider your cats’ well-being. As the nights are drawing in, sadly we see an increase in cats being involved in road traffic accidents, due to reduced visibility. Cats don't change their routine just because the clocks change, and continue to go out on their daily roaming. So if it is possible, it would be wise to start keeping your cat indoors earlier in the evening to avoid any potential accidents. With fireworks being part of this season too, it is also advisable to keep your cat in at night, until after all the bonfire night celebrations are over. The loud bangs and flashes from the fireworks may frighten your cats, causing them to run away and become lost. Make sure they have a safe and cosy area in the house where they can settle and hide if needed, and provide them with a litter tray if they don't already have one. Keep doors and windows closed, including cat flaps; draw the curtains to block out the flashes from the fireworks and put the television or radio on a little louder than usual to drown out the bangs.

Now is also a good time of year to give your cats a general health check, by making sure that they are up to date with their flea and worm treatments, and all vaccinations. This is also the time of year when we celebrate Halloween, and when Cats Protection have their National Black Cat Day, on 27th October. This celebrates black cats and is aimed at encouraging people to adopt black cats, which can take 13% longer than other cats to find a new home. Pictured below are Molly, Ozzy and Popeye, who are just some of the cats that have been waiting a long time for a new home due to their colour. Molly is an independent cat who has been waiting a number of months for a new home. Ozzy is hoping to be a lucky boy and have a new home in time for Halloween, and Popeye is a loner, who needs a home with no other pets. So why not pay us a visit today, and take home your very own lucky black cat! If you can offer Molly, Ozzy or Popeye, or any of the other cats in our care, a new home please contact us on 01386 833343 or call in to Evesham Cats Protection between 10am and 3.30 pm throughout the week.

Bonfire & Firework Safety ■■ Always follow the instructions on each firework box, and keep them in enclosed in a box until use. Never keep them in your pocket. ■■ Light fireworks at arms length and stand well back. ■■ Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn't gone off, it could still explode. ■■ Children should always be supervised around fireworks. ■■ Light sparklers one at a time wearing gloves, and always supervise children when using them. They should not be given to children under five. ■■ Keep pets indoors and leave the TV on to distract them from the noise. ■■ Do not set off fireworks after 11pm, or midnight on 5th November.

A

s Bonfire Night approaches, we would encourage people to attend one of the large organised displays held throughout the county, and follow the safety precautions set out by the organisers. However, it is understandable that families may want to hold their own firework displays. If you do decide to set fireworks off in a residential area, please consider your neighbours and follow this advice: Fireworks ■■ When buying fireworks always ensure they comply with the British Standard BS7114. This will be shown on the box and on the fireworks themselves. ■■ You cannot buy or use fireworks if you are under 18, and fireworks should always only be handled by a responsible adult.

24

■■ If you are setting your own fireworks off, please consider making your neighbours aware of your plans in advance, so it gives them the option to make alternative plans, or at least prepare themselves and their pets for the noise and disturbance fireworks can cause. Bonfires ■■ Always position bonfires well away from buildings, trees and fireworks. ■■ Keep a distance from bonfires, and always supervise children around them. ■■ Check that no animals are hiding inside the fire before lighting. ■■ Build the fire so that it is stable and will not collapse outwards. ■■ Never use flammable liquids to light the fire, such as petrol.

Superintendent Sue Thomas said: "Please be a responsible and considerate member of your community. We all know the dangers of fireworks, however we often become complacent due to them being commonplace. Please be responsible, consider others within your community, act within the law, stay safe and help others stay safe."

Road Safety Week 20th to 26th November

Road Safety Week is the UK's biggest road safety event, coordinated annually by Brake and involving thousands of schools, organisations and communities each year. Brake is a road safety charity that works to prevent road death and injury, make streets and communities safer, and supports the victims of road crashes. Brake founded Road Safety Week in 1997 as an annual event to raise awareness about road safety and promote steps that everyone can take to stop these needless deaths and injuries year-round. In the UK speeding is still a major problem. It causes needless crashes, untold suffering and stops people living safe and healthy lives. Driving is unpredictable and if something unexpected happens on the road ahead – such as a child stepping out from between parked cars – it is a driver’s speed that will determine whether they can stop in time and, if they can’t stop, how hard they will hit. Yet newer vehicles are more powerful than ever before and reach high speeds quickly. Driving fast is glamorised and often encouraged by programmes and adverts that worship the cult of the car. We all live busy lives and there is a temptation to speed up The Worcestershire Grapevine

in the hope of saving time, where in fact we could be costing lives. That is why we are encouraging everyone to Speed Down Save Lives for Road Safety Week 2017.

White Ribbon Day 25th November

What is the White Ribbon Campaign (WRC)? The WRC is the largest effort in the world of men working to end men's violence against women. It relies on volunteer support and financial contributions from individuals and organizations. How did the WRC get started? In 1991, a handful of men in Canada decided they had a responsibility to urge men to speak out against violence against women. They decided that wearing a white ribbon would be a symbol of men's opposition to men's violence against women. After only six weeks preparation, as many as one hundred thousand men across Canada wore a white ribbon. Many others were drawn into discussion and debate on the issue of men's violence. There are now White Ribbon Campaigns operating in many countries around the world. The UK Branch of WRC was started in 2004. What does it mean to wear a white ribbon? Wearing a white ribbon is a personal pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women. Each year, the WRC urge men and boys to wear a ribbon for one or two weeks, starting on November 25th, the International Day for the Eradication of Violence Against Women.

ereford Red is a deep coloured, mild and creamy local cheese. It has a medium flavour similar to a Red Leicester, with a fuller taste. Hand made at Pond Farm, Whittington, by Nick Hodgets who has been making cheese for well over 20 years - a great cheesemaker, with a range of different cheeses all produced locally. A mild, nutty English cheese, made from pasteurized cow’s milk and vegetarian rennet, and coloured a deep red with Annatto, a dye extracted from the seed of a South America plant. This cheese gives a good colour to any cheeseboard.

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Apple Time I

f you have an apple tree that has not been looked at for years, or one that has been pruned but you’re unsure what to do or how much to take off, here are some pruning techniques to point you in the right direction. Let’s start off with a tree that has not been pruned and look at ways to encourage better growth and increase yield. Apples trees that have not been touched for a long time suffer

28

from air not circulating around the tree. A good way to tell if this is the case is to stand by the trunk of the tree and look up. What you’re looking for is sky. Back when I was a student we were told if you can’t throw your hat up and out of the top of the tree then how was air going to move around. And up to a certain point this is right. Also you are looking to take out any inward pointing or crossing branches. Once this is done it

Pruning a branch to set fruit Leaf buds look small and pointed; blossom buds are bigger and more rounded. If you pinch out the end of a branch it will put on what are called water shoots (a very strong upright growth with just leaf buds). By cutting the water shoots off at this time of the year to 3 to 5 buds, next year they will turn into blossom buds. To keep this up the tree would need to be pruned every year. Setting a branch Once a second year branch gets fruit the weight of the fruit pulls the branch over and makes it set at that angle. It will then normally grow a water shoot off this bend. If the tree is too low to walk under or mow near, this joint is the best place to take the branch back and still keep the weeping effect of the tree. If your tree has had a damaged branch and is a little one-sided, take a water shoot in its first or second year and use string to pull

it over into the gap to create an umbrella shape. It will then set into this position. Things to be done in November in your garden ■■ With fruit trees put, grease bands around the trunk of your tree about two feet up. Follow the instructions on the box. Grease bands aim to stop the female codling moth laying its eggs near blossom before the fruit forms.

cover your compost, for example with a plastic sheet kept in place by something heavy like bricks. ■■ If the frost has not yet come this is a good time to jet wash patios and paths to help stop them getting slippery when wet. ■■ If you have any wooden garden furniture try and get it under cover to help protect it. ■■ If you are thinking about planting a hedge, now is the

time to do it as it is much cheaper to get what is called ‘Bare Root’ stock where hedging is grown in big numbers, and is lifted and not potted up. I would always recommend a bamboo cane and rabbit guard with each plant, even if you do not have a problem with rabbits, as the cane and guard will help support the plant during the winter from being flattened by strong winds or snow.

■■ Prune your roses and pick off this year’s leaves and burn them (do not compost them). I will cover more on this next month. ■■ Turn your compost over. The aim is to mix everything well to add moisture and air, both essential to speeding up the process. Try to move thick material, like roots, to the centre where it will break down quicker. Don’t forget to If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. Homeopathy . . .

helping the body to heal itself

T

he principle of treating ‘like with like’ dates back to Hippocrates (460 – 377 BC) but in its current form homeopathy has been used worldwide for more than 200 years. It recognises that all symptoms of ill health are an expression of disharmony within the whole person – and that it is the patient that needs treating, not the disease. Homeopathy was founded by a German doctor called Samuel Hahnemann (1745 – 1843). He was shocked by the harsh medical treatments of the day which included blood-letting, purging and the use of poisons such as arsenic. Hahnemann was also a translator and it was while he was translating a medical book that he noticed that the action of quinine was such that it could cause symptoms similar to malaria, and yet it was used to treat that condition. He began to think about the idea of curing conditions with what he called ‘similars.’ For instance, homeopaths cure rashes with medicines made from stinging nettles and colds and hay fever are treated by tablets made from alum sepia (red onion). Many substances used – like belladonna (deadly nightshade) – are poisonous if taken in their raw state. Homeopathic medicines contain only a tiny trace of the original materials used and are totally safe. It is important to buy medication from a homeopath or reputable supplier. Never attempt to make your own – you could end up doing more harm than good.

30

When you visit a homeopath for the first time, he or she will take a detailed case history in order that they can build up a complete picture of you as a person. Questions asked might include things like: • Do you prefer hot or cold drinks? • What sort of music do you listen to? • What do you worry about? • Which parts of your body are affected when you get stressed? The initial consultation may take an hour or longer and the homeopath will decide, based on the answers you have given, which medication is best to try first. A few useful remedies for common conditions are: Arnica (tablets or cream) for bruises. Never use on an open wound. Belladonna for sunburn or sunstroke Ruta for eye strain Apis for wasp stings and cystitis Nux vomica for hangovers When using homeopathic medicine, follow the instructions carefully. For best results, don’t eat, drink or clean your teeth for fifteen minutes before and after taking tablets.

For instance, if you took nux vomica for a hangover you would notice an immediate improvement. However your symptoms would return – possibly more severely – if you drank a cup of coffee immediately after taking the tablets. Some important points to remember: • Make sure the person you consult is a member of the Society of Homeopaths. • Take any medication in accordance with instructions. Never take more than the stated dose. • Don’t try making your own medication – many of the raw ingredients used are highly toxic. • If symptoms worsen, consult a doctor. Autumn ancestry... a time of colour and plenty

T

here is still a heady aroma of cider in the orchard as the last of the apples drop to the ground, there to be picked over by pheasants and blackbirds. The crop was heavy this year and there was no hope of using all the apples or the damsons, or even giving them away. With so much fallen fruit, walking in the orchard was a precarious business. I was in danger of sliding to the ground amongst the hornets and a hatch of very smart red admirals feasting on the fermenting pears. The hornets buzzed them continuously but I was never quite sure whether they were after the butterflies or the sugars from the fruit. Autumn is a wonderful time for foragers. Hedgerows are laden with fruit and berries. The wild damsons in my hedge have helped to keep up my five a day count for weeks. But the myrobalan plum has remained tantalisingly out of reach, frustrating as it makes the most wonderful jam. And any chance of me getting hazel The Worcestershire Grapevine

nuts before the squirrels, is next to zero. Two puff balls (mushrooms) appeared on the back lawn along with a small forest of shaggy ink caps. A friend keeps pointing out the ones I can eat, but I’m afraid I’m still reticent about trying them. It is all too easy to get it wrong with grim consequences. One of the prettiest fungi - the red and white spotted fly agaric - is not all it seems; it causes hallucinations and has a substance in it which can make you very poorly indeed. I think I’ll stick to the mushrooms I buy. Responsible foraging is great fun but there are some rules to remember: never eat anything unless you are one hundred percent sure it is safe; always leave some behind for wildlife; minimise damage; do not pick anything rare or that is not abundant, always ask permission from the landowner, and finally, it is against the law to dig up any wild plant. Only take what you plan to eat.

Gardeners will be burning their fallen leaves and prunings now and others lighting bonfires on November 5th... please, look out for the hedgehogs that might be hibernating in them. Check your bonfires before lighting them, and should you find a prickly friend who has been munching through your slugs all year, find him somewhere cosy for the winter, and he will be there again next spring helping you win the war against those pesky molluscs. November sees the end of autumn, those wonderful colours of dying leaves as the chloroform fades from them . . . Article and photos by Geraldine Holbourn

Age Is No Barrier To Volunteering!

V

olunteering is one of the most rewarding things you can do. By offering your time, life skills and experience, you can help older people in your community improve their quality of life and maintain their independence and wellbeing. Many people find that volunteering helps with the transition into retirement but age is no barrier to volunteering. If you can smile – you can volunteer! Volunteering is helping, not hiring; giving, not taking; contributing, not counting. Volunteering is about ordinary people doing extraordinary things. The value of volunteering is priceless! Have you got the time, please? At Age UK Hereford & Localities we are currently looking for volunteers to support our services and help us make a difference to the lives of older people in Ledbury, including:

Reaching You Service - The service offers a wide range of support including practical help with tasks that can become more difficult for them to do themselves. Could you help someone to take their first steps in using a computer? Could you take someone shopping or mow their lawn? Perhaps you would enjoy recording someone’s life story and memories? Ledbury Lunch Club - The Lunch Club meets once a month at the Community Centre in Lawnside Road. Join our existing volunteers, providing a friendly face and happy atmosphere for older people to get

together, enjoy lunch and each other’s company. Footcare Service – volunteer as a “cutter” for our much needed footcare service which is held at Harling Court several times a month. This is a simple toenail cutting service, helping people to remain safe and steady on their feet. Full training is provided. Office and Administration - helping with reception, admin and data inputting in our office based in the Master’s House.

We welcome new volunteers regardless of age. We appreciate the skills and telephone: 0333 0066 299 experience they bring, email: contact@ageukhl.org helping us to support www.ageuk.org.uk/herefordandlocalities older members of our community so that they Registered Charity Number: 1093512 maintain their dignity, Company Number: 04393515 health and independence. Elephant Conservationist Saba Douglas-Hamilton to visit Safari Park

H

ighly acclaimed elephant conservationist and wildlife TV presenter of This Wild Life and Big Cat Diaries, Saba DouglasHamilton, is set to visit West Midland Safari Park on Tuesday 7 November ahead of her visit to Birmingham’s Town Hall as part of her ‘A Life With Elephants’ tour. Coming all the way over to the UK from her home in Kenya, Saba will be meeting Safari Park staff to talk about her work in elephant conservation and also meet some of the elephants themselves – including their youngest member, baby elephant Sutton, who was the first elephant in the UK to be born via artificial insemination. Lewis Hodson, Deputy Head Keeper of Elephants at West Midland Safari

42

Park, said, "We are all very much looking forward to meeting Saba and hearing about her experiences with elephants. I've worked with elephants for many years and always find it fascinating to hear from others that share the same passion for working with these magnificent creatures. Our three elephants, Latabe, Five and young Sutton, are also looking forward to meeting her!” Born in the Great Rift Valley in Kenya, Saba met her first wild elephant when she was just six weeks old - one of approximately 400 living in the Lake Manyara National Park in Tanzania that her father, Iain Douglas-Hamilton, was studying. Saba’s first job was with Save the Rhino Trust in Namibia, working in the hinterland of the Skeleton Coast on a Crafts for Conservation project. She was then head hunted by the School for International Training to work as an academic director in Tanzania, and later did a stint as an anthropological consultant for the National Museums of Kenya.

In 1997, Saba joined her father’s charity, Save the Elephants (STE), as Chief Operations Officer to help build up their research centre in Samburu National Reserve, north Kenya. It was here that she was ‘talent-spotted’ by the BBC and began her life as a TV presenter and producer of wildlife documentaries. Saba will be at Town Hall, Birmingham on Wednesday 22 November at 7:30pm for an evening of exciting animal stories and intimate behind the scenes tales of life in Kenya with her young family, which brings her into close contact with some of the most fascinating and rare wildlife on the planet. The show will also include a question and answer session. Tickets are still available online, via telephone and also at the Symphony Hall box office. For more information about the event, visit to https://www.thsh.co.uk/ event/saba-douglas-hamilton-a-lifewith-elephants#tab0=details.

Remember, Remember

W

your pets this November

ith November, comes the prospect of fireworks.

Many pets become anxious and frightened when fireworks are going off and unlike us, they do not understand why there are loud bangs and bright flashes outside. The most human thing to do, when our pets are distressed is to comfort and reassure them – sadly however, this can sometimes make the situation worse because we are actually re-enforcing that there is something to be frightened of. Signs that your pet may be fearful, may include the following: ■■ Ears back

■■ Keep doors, windows and cat flaps closed after dusk

cats - this is available as a plug in diffuser or spray.

■■ Take your dog for a walk, well before the fireworks are likely to begin

■■ We also have a number of calming agents, such as Zylkene and Calmex, which are very beneficial if used in plenty of time. In severe cases sedation may be indicated but this is usually a last resort.

■■ Have the curtains drawn and lights on – this will help to mask the flashes ■■ Have the television or radio on slightly louder than normal – this will help to drown out the bangs ■■ For owners of Rabbits & Guinea Pigs. please provide extra bedding hay so that your pet has somewhere to hide and cover the hutch with blankets to mask the flashes and reduce the loud bangs

Community Connections Project

A

pilot community transport initiative is being launched this month, which will be delivered in partnership by the county's existing Community Transport (CT) operators, funded by the Department for Transport's Total Transport initiative and supported by Worcestershire County Council and healthcare providers. It will seek to gather information about patients and hospital visitors' transport needs as well as assisting those unable to travel by any other means to get to hospital appointments and hospital visiting. Droitwich Spa & Rural Council for Voluntary Service are leading their partner CT schemes in Pershore, Redditch, Evesham and Worcester in the project delivery. Community Transport Connections will be providing transport for residents in Redditch, Worcester and the rural areas in between who need to get to either the Alexandra or Worcestershire Royal Hospitals, but have no access to or difficulty in using any other form of transport. Residents will need to register for the service and pre-book their journeys a minimum of 48 hours in advance. Fares and eligibility criteria apply for this service, so please ask for further details. The Booking Line is open Monday to Friday between 9am and 4pm. Tel: 0300 3239965 or Email: ctconnections.org.uk

This service is provided by volunteers who give their time to support and assist people within their communities. If you can help support this service in either an admin or driver role please call 0300 3239965 to find out more. Training is provided and expenses are paid. Cllr Alan Amos, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Highways, said: "It is hugely important that transport options are available for people who need to get to their local GP or hospital. We are delighted to be able to work in partnership with health services and community transport groups to provide this pilot scheme that will allow people to get to a variety of healthcare settings quickly and safely." Simon Trickett, Accountable Officer for three Worcestershire CCGs, said: “We’re pleased that this

transport scheme is now in place to offer local residents improved access to healthcare services. During work to reconfigure acute hospital services in the county, lots of people told us how they struggle to get to the different hospital sites. The transport options available were reviewed and hopefully this new service will help to strengthen local transport links. This scheme will offer an individual, patient focussed service supporting those who are unable to travel to do so.” Kate Walton, Chief Officer at Pershore Volunteer Centre, said: “We’re well aware of the difficulties many people face in getting to hospital appointments so we’re delighted that our community transport scheme is part of this project.” For more information, contact Kate Walton, Pershore Volunteer Centre 01386 554299
