Hello Readers... Welcome to the May issue of The Grapevine. As you know, recently there has been a growing amount of attention in the media about the over- use of plastics and the effect this is having on the environment. Following on from this, I have had a couple of enquiries from readers about whether or not this magazine, because of the glossy paper and laminated cover, is recyclable. So I decided to do a bit of research on this, and this is what I’ve discovered.

Grapevine TThe Worcestershire

Publisher & Advertising Grapevine Publications (Worcestershire) Ltd 3 Rye Street • Birtsmorton • WR13 6AS Tel: 01684 833715  Mob: 07754 170286 info@grapevinepublications.co.uk www.grapevinepublications.co.uk

The way paper manufacturers produce gloss paper is through a finishing process which involves polishing the paper – in much the same way as you would polish a piece of wood to achieve a smooth shiny surface. The laminated cover is also produced in much the same way. A heavier grade of paper is put through a more intensive finishing process, which produces the smooth, very high gloss end-product.

Editor Betty-Ann Ambury betty@grapevinepublications.co.uk

I then looked at a number of websites – and checked with our printing company – and both the inner pages and the heavy duty cover are recyclable. The paper mills that waste paper goes to for recycling, put the paper through machines that are so efficient, that they can even remove staples and any other foreign objects that inadvertently find their way in with the paper.

So, in a nutshell – our magazines are 100% recyclable, including the high gloss cover, which means that you can dispose of them in your recycle bin with a clear conscience. And here’s a titbit you might find interesting: a large percentage of magazines are recycled into newsprint, so the copy of The Grapevine you read today, could well be the newspaper you read next month!

The Carrot’s Tale T

here are many pitfalls for a writer when creating a fictional world where characters are having a meal together. When I run workshops in schools many of the children are surprised that people didn’t eat pizzas and kebabs at the time of the First World War. As a novelist, if I’m working on a historical setting, I spend time researching the sort of food the characters would have eaten – and where it came from. I have made some interesting discoveries. Walter Raleigh and Sir Francis Drake are credited with bringing potatoes to England. Potatoes originate from South America and weren’t discovered by the Spaniards until 1532. Tomatoes are technically a fruit and were also cultivated by the Aztecs and Incas as early as 700 AD. They grew wild in the Andes – Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Ecuador. The first account their use in Italy dates back to 1548 in Tuscany. It is thought that the eastern purple rooted carrot originated from Afghanistan where the Himalayan and Hindu Kush mountains meet. It was domesticated in adjacent areas of Russia, Iran, India and Pakistan. The first carrots were white, purple, green, yellow or red – not orange. Temple drawings from Egypt in 2000 BC show a purple

8

plant believed to be a carrot. In Roman times, carrots were purple or white. Purple, white and yellow carrots were brought to Europe in the 14th century. They came to England in the 15th century. Orange ones weren’t grown until the 16th century in Holland when they were specially bred for the ruling House of Orange. Modern carrots are a direct descendent of these. We have the Romans to thank for introducing cabbage and lettuce to Britain. Lettuce was first cultivated by the Ancient Egyptians. It is an annual plant of the daisy family. It spread to the Greeks and then the Romans who gave it the name ‘lactuca’. The earliest form of the wild pea came from Greece, Syria, Turkey, Jordan and Egypt in around 4800 – 4400 BC. It is also noted in Afghanistan in 2000 BC and Pakistan and India in 2250 – 1750 BC. The Romans brought the plant to Britain and dried peas formed the basis of pease

pottage – a dish that saved many people from starvation. The Pilgrim Fathers took dried peas with them on the Mayflower when they sailed for the New World in 1620. Celery is believed to have come from the Mediterranean area. It was originally cultivated for medicinal purposes and was used to treat anything from fevers to liver and spleen ailments. Woven garlands of celery are said to have been found in Egyptian tombs. Celery was considered a holy plant in the classical Greek period and worn by winners of the Nemean Games. The Romans valued it for cooking – although the plant was said to bring bad luck under certain circumstances. The Italians domesticated celery as a vegetable in the 17th century. Look carefully at what you are eating – the vegetables on your plate may have an interesting history!

50 Top Tips to get Fit for the Summer

H

ere is a mixture of my 50 reasons to exercise and ways get fit for the summer:

1. Take control – write down your goals and reasons you want to reach them. 2. Keep a food diary - It can educate, guide and inspire – and will possibly highlight eating habits you are unaware of. 3. Exercise helps prevent strokes and heart disease. 4. Buy a decent pair of trainers - the right footwear is essential, whether you are road running, dancing or playing tennis – Don’t exercise in worn out trainers. 5. Portion Control – you need it – use smaller plates and fill them with green vegetables or salad. 6. Exercise has anti-ageing effects, increases longevity and keeps your body fit and able. 7. Exercise lifts your mood and builds your self-esteem.

12. Exercise reduces stress. 13. Laugh it off – laughing boosts the immune system, lowers blood pressure, reduces stress hormones and increase muscle flexion. 14. Exercise makes you feel happier. 15. Have a ball – get a Swiss ball, the body automatically responds to the balls instability and acts naturally to stop you falling off, working mostly your back and abdominal muscles. 16. Find a diet that suits you – focus on healthy eating and you can’t go wrong. Eliminate processed foods, sugar and limit your alcohol intake. 17. Run – higher intensity exercise = more calories burnt, which means more weight lost – However, just be careful of your joints. 18. Exercise improves sleeping patterns.

8. Exercise improves body image and gives you confidence.

19. Don’t starve yourself – just eat more: avocados, blackcurrants and blueberries, garlic, greens, nuts, oily fish, onions and tomatoes.

9. Think little and often – a small commitment to exercise on a regular basis is better than no commitment at all.

20. Exercise boosts mental health, keeps your brain fit and sharpens memory.

10. Move more – more of us are sitting down at desks, in cars, in front of the TV – get up and move, go for a walk and get active.

22. Eat and drink less – cut down on: alcohol, soft drinks, sausages, chips, white bread, and cheese.

11. Exercise strengthens your heart, your bones and improves posture.

10

21. Exercise reduces feelings of depression.

23. Take up yoga or Pilates – they promote flexibility; reduce stress and increases stamina and strength.

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

24. Listen to Baz Luhrmann’s song ‘Sunscreen’ – “Do one thing every day that scares you” to give you an ‘adrenaline ‘rush’ which increases metabolism, helps fight stress, reduces the risk of stroke and can control allergies. 25. Exercise improves learning abilities and creative thinking 26. Exercise increases energy and endurance. 27. Eat Breakfast – “breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dine like a pauper”. 28. Exercise prevents colds and boosts your immune system. 29. Drink lots of water – I’d recommend at least 2 litres of filtered water every day, more in hot weather or if doing exercise. 30. Exercise improves skin tone and colour. 31. Exercise alleviates anxiety and helps keep you focused in life. 32. Cut out sugar – cakes, sweets, chocolate and focus on your natural sugars found in fruit – but that doesn’t mean you can overindulge in fruit too! 33. Don’t ban all foods – banned foods = forbidden fruits. A little of what you fancy does you good – but only if you stick to a “little”.

enjoyable when you are doing it alongside someone else. So, too, is dieting. 45. Exercise improves productivity, improves concentration and fights dementia. 46. Sleep – the body’s time to repair and rebuild. If you’re not getting adequate amounts of sleep you will become sleep deprived which can in turn reduce muscle mass, leave you fatigued and not having the energy to exercise. 47. Ask yourself “Am I hungry?’ – Most of the time thirst is mistaken for hunger. Try having a glass of water when you think you’re hungry and assess if it is food you actually need. 48. Exercise makes life more exciting. 49. Exercise improves quality of life 50. Start now!! – why wait until tomorrow, Monday or any day – there is no better time than the present! Start your healthy lifestyle now! If you want to get in shape for the summer and are interested in our 6 week transformation program, or any of the other services we provide, feel free to get in touch. Call Amy on 07740 366419 or email amy@ almfitness.co.uk

34. Exercise lowers risk of diabetes, certain cancers and reduces high blood pressure. 35. Exercise reduces back pain and decreases osteoporosis risk 36. Exercise improves balance and coordination. 37. Slow Down – it takes the brain up to 20 minutes to register that the stomach is full, so eat slowly and if you think you want seconds, wait 20 minutes before doing so. 38. Exercise improves oxygen supply to the cells. 39. Exercise improves cholesterol levels 40. Exercise improves eating habits. 41. Exercise improves muscle strength and joint function. 42. Get active with the kids – encourage your children to be active from a young age and make it a familiar part of their daily lifestyle. 43. Exercise lessens fatigue. 44. Phone a friend – exercise in any form is far more The Worcestershire Grapevine

‘The Art of the Fifties’ A major exhibition and sale of original paintings, prints and posters Saturday 26th May - Sunday 3rd June 2018 Elmslie House 8 Avenue Road, Great Malvern, WR14 3AG

T

his free exhibition reviews the range of work produced in this crucial decade when British society made the transition from war to peace; through austerity to normality. British artists played an important role in post-war reconstruction promoting good design and greater access to art for all. The fifties saw a renewed emphasis on more everyday subjects such as interior, urban and industrial scenes. At the same time, developments in abstract art continued to blur the boundaries with the representational. The exhibition brings together over 50 fabrics, paintings, prints and posters from across Britain,

Europe and the United States. It includes such well-known artists as John Bratby, Fernand Leger and John Piper and the less well known - especially women artists - who have received little recognition. The exhibition will be held in the hall at Elmslie House, a restored and award-winning Grade II family home located in the centre of Great Malvern, close to the railway station. This free exhibition will be open daily from 10.30 am – 4.30 pm with late opening on Friday 1st June until 8 pm, but may be opened at other times by arrangement. A café will be available from 11 am offering light refreshments.

For more information, please contact Richard Turkington on 07714 106386 or richard@fiftiesart.com, The Worcestershire Grapevineor for directions, please visit: http://elmsliehouse.co.uk/13

pril and May are the months for heading outside, the days are getting longer, the weather warmer and nature is waking up. Everywhere I walk there's no shortage of delicate buds bursting into bright flowers. One of my favourites are the tulips. They are so graceful and delicate with such beautiful colours. In a small garden they stand out as they tend to be taller and brighter than anything else that is out at this time. In mixed borders most herbaceous plants will not be at full height by the time the tulips bloom. In my previous garden I had some Praestans Fusilier, these were dwarf red tulips, with spiky tips, and each bulb would give several flowers, but mostly I remember how they circled our small lilac tree, as if dancing in the breeze. Can you imagine a time when a single tulip bulb was more valuable than gold? Incredible as that

14

sounds, during the 1630s, ‘Tulip-mania’ was reaching its peak in Holland, and just one bulb could fetch ten times as much as a skilled craftsman would earn in a year. Although that economic bubble inevitably burst, a passion for the delicate flowers endures, and today their blooms feature in most spring gardens. Tulips are easy to grow, work well in borders and containers, and are widely available. There is plenty of choice of colour as well as shape, and these days the bulbs are far more affordable. Quite often after planting your bulbs the pesky grey squirrel may come along and dig them up. Other pests are slugs that may eat holes in the leaves. You can even get bulb blindness, which is when the leaves appear but no flowers. The best way to deal with this is to dig up all the bulbs and other plants in the bed, thoroughly work a good fertilizer into the bed and then replant only the bulbs that are good and show no damage or mould. Hopefully you will then get some beautiful tulips. If this doesn't work and the bulbs still won’t flower then discard them and buy new.

Most professional gardeners will lift the bulbs at the end of each season but to do this, you have to be able to dry the bulbs and then store them at the correct temperature. Many gardeners will plant in autumn but you can purchase tulips in pots from a garden centre and transfer to your garden after flowering. Some would say that this is an expensive option, but I found I can see the blooms and then after flowering, place them in the garden according to theirorheight. I think my favourite of all my tulips is 'Queen at Night', which is a late flowering deep purple, almost black tulip. I had two in my garden and they grew to 2ft, or 60cm tall. When in full sun they were a glorious deep purple colour, but on a cloudy day they were almost black. Tulips are delightful flowers and so easy to grow. They are lovely in bunches and if the heads droop, pierce the stem just below the flower with a pin and you'll find they'll stand back up again. Why not plant some tulips in your garden and enjoy their beautiful displays. article & photos by Pamela Green

Little Boudicca T

The Worcestershire Grapevine

here is an old nest box on the wall of the house. For more years than I can remember it has been the nursery for countless blue tits and occasionally wrens. The appearance of parent birds with beaks full of grubs has often been the first indication of a new family. This year has been different. Back in February a new kid on the block turned up. A feisty female blue tit, crest up and wings spread, laid claim to the nest box, and woe betide any bird who dared to come within twenty feet of her chosen home. Many a battle took place and many aspiring home owners were sent packing. The word spread, this nest box is taken, and other claimants soon knew not to trifle with this Boudicca of blue tits. She never once let down her guard, patrolling her patch and keeping a watchful eye out for any bird daring to steal her nest box. The beast from the East arrived and snow blocked the entrance to the box. Not content to wait until it had thawed, my little Boudicca carefully removed each granule of snow until she could comfortably get inside. March, and serious nest building began. Moss was brought in and taken out if not considered good enough. What looked like dried grass was also used, and again, discarded if it didn’t come up to scratch. There were problems to overcome; some nesting material wouldn’t fit through the hole. This caused quite a dilemma as little Boudicca tugged and tugged until at last she managed to squeeze her bundle through the entrance. The male blue tit has little to do with nest building. Now, in May,

the eggs are hatching and he has to work as hard as his mate bringing food to the new hatchlings. There could be as many as ten or more hungry mouths to fill inside that nest box and watching from the kitchen table I can see a constant back and forth of birds with beaks full of grubs. Little Boudicca chose her nursery well: a safe nesting site and a nearby bird feeder with a ready supply of food if natural supplies fail, which they sometimes do. But wait, what’s that sitting on top of one of the bird feeders? Blue tits beware, the sparrow hawk is hungry too and blue tits are on its menu. Article and photos by Geraldine Holbourn

remove it or remove its limbs consider growing a climber into it and you have its own natural support.

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Putting Climbers & Plants Together

A

lot of people decide to plant a rose e.g. a banksia which is a non-thorny rose, in an apple tree, or a Wisteria growing up into the canopy of a tree.

climbers and plants.

If your plant has got away and is taking over the tree, there are a number of things you can do. You can prune it back very hard. This has both advantages and disadvantages: it will stop your climber from flowering for a number of years, but it will also spur it on to grow lots of very strong shoots to grow through the canopy again. These will normally calm down after a couple of years and then flowering will begin again. These upright water shoots will then put on feathered sideways shoots which encourages the stems to lean over and set themselves into the weeping position. So, do not worry if they grow straight up because it does encourage them to weep over. Obviously thinning out helps both plants tremendously - it allows more light to get to both plants.

Most climbers are designed to grow up into the canopy to maximise the light and pollination but this doesn’t help the plant it grows up into. Most climbers will eventually kill the hosts they are These are great for a number of reasons, they provide extra colour using as support. My recommendation is to find a in your garden, for example: if Another thing people do, you have a cherry tree which climber that doesn’t swamp the especially with Ivy, is that they cut flowers in early spring, this can be plant it grows into, otherwise it the climber at the base to followed by the Wisteria flowers, will kill it. If you already have a and can look really good. There dead stump which you don’t know encourage more growth to go back up. Keeping something as thick are some ground rules for To growing what to do with, before you advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk 22

and as evergreen as Ivy out of the canopy and just up the main stem is a good idea. If you have more than one tree with a climber growing up it you can rotate the growth. For example, Ivy - you can cut the Ivy off one tree in year one, and then off the second tree in year two, so on, and rotate round to ensure that you always have some climbers at maturity and you don’t have such a big job when they reach the canopy. The main thing you have really got to look out for is dead left in the tree. Roses are especially prone to this and it adds extra stress to the trees. The dead acts like a sail in the wind and also as a massive blanket in the snow adding extra weight and pulling down branches, so thinning out on a reasonably regular basis is what I would recommend.

around the tree to help it grow up, but remember to remove these once it is up into the tree because they are easily forgotten about and could possibly dig into the tree. Wisterias like to tangle themselves up into a tree so a single wire that’s hung from the tree and fastened into the ground with a tent peg is all that is needed, just to get it going, but again remember to remove it when the plant becomes strong enough. Choose a plant that flowers at a different time from its host, giving you a prolonged flowering time.

Supporting up into a tree Once you have bought your climber and you know that it won’t swamp the tree, you might need to help guide it to grow up the tree to start with. You can put chicken wire or some very lose strands of wire If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. Ice Age is an immersive, multisensory experience, allowing guests to step back in time and walk amongst the magnificent creatures that roamed the Earth millions of years ago. The £1.25 million project has three distinct and interactive time zones and also features an enormous rumbling volcano and huge atmospheric ice cave, both of which can be walked through by explorers.

Complementing Land of the Living Dinosaurs that opened in 2015, Ice Age continues the prehistoric journey and shows life on Earth after dinosaurs became extinct. The captivating exhibit, located in the Discovery Trail, begins at the start of the Cenozoic Era nearly 65 million years ago and features over 20 life-sized species of mammals, the majority of which are animatronic. These moving, breathing and roaring creatures include a giant ground sloth, menacing hell pig and a herd of ginormous mammoth. Intimidating guests as they embark on their adventure, a ferocious smilodon will guard the entrance to the exhibit amongst rock work with the Ice Age lettering emblazoned underneath. Also known as a sabre-toothed

cat, the smilodon is one of the most fierce and recognisable prehistoric animals, with canine teeth of up to a foot long to aid in precision killing. Neil James, Project Manager, said, “We are extremely proud of our new exhibit, which has taken over six months for us to create, install and complete. We have called upon international expert manufacturers and sculptors to create these magnificent creatures and their animatronic attributes, making them seem as life-like as possible.” He continued, “The biggest challenge for us was installing the huge volcano without giving away too much! Although we had several setbacks due to the cold weather, the build has been very successful and we have utilised a previously unused space between the Discovery

Why females should avoid a girls’ night out after they are married !! The other night I was invited out for a night with the 'girls.' I promised my husband that I would be home by midnight. Well, the hours passed and the margaritas went down way too easily. Around 3am, a bit loaded, I headed for home. Just as I got in the door, the cuckoo clock in the hallway started up and cuckooed three times.

The Grapevine

Quickly, realizing my husband would probably wake up, I cuckooed another nine times. I was really proud of myself for coming up with such a quick-witted solution, in order to escape a possible conflict with him. (Even when totally smashed .... 3 cuckoos plus 9 cuckoos totals 12 cuckoos = MIDNIGHT!) The next morning when my husband asked me what time I got in, I told him 'midnight'. He didn't seem angry in the least.

YOU WALK ... WE PAY!

Whew, I got away with that one! Then he said 'We need a new cuckoo clock.' When I asked him why, he said, 'Well, last night our clock cuckooed three times, then said 'oh bugger.' Cuckooed four more times, cleared its throat, cuckooed another three times, giggled, cuckooed twice more, and then tripped over the coffee table and f*rted. ‘

New Wine for Seniors !! A single glass at night could mean a peaceful, uninterrupted night sleep . . . California vintners in the Napa Valley area, which primarily produce Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Grigio wines, have developed a new hybrid grape that acts as an anti-diuretic. Community Speed Watch Introduction from your Safer Neighbourhood Team Excessive or inappropriate speeding is dangerous and is responsible for many unnecessary injuries and collisions. It is a serious traffic offence which affects the quality of life of many communities throughout West Mercia. Reducing excessive and inappropriate speed is a priority for West Mercia Police and the force use a wide range of education, enforcement and publicity programmes to address the issue. Our Community Speed Watch (CSW) initiative is one of these and similar schemes are operated throughout the UK. These local schemes are established where communities raise speeding as a concern through their local safer neighbourhood team, parish council or at a local PACT (Partners and Communities Together) event. They enable local people to play an active role in improving their community and provide a valuable deterrent to people driving irresponsibly. What is Community Speed Watch? Community Speed Watch (CSW) schemes are

coordinated by the police but managed and run by volunteers in the community. The scheme enables local people to take an active role in road safety and make their community safer. The aim of CSW is NOT to catch as many speeding drivers as possible. It aims to encourage motorists to drive at a safe and appropriate speed, reduce speed in areas of concern, re-educate drivers about the dangers of speeding and address concerns from local residents about cars speeding through their neighbourhood. How does CSW work? At specified safe locations, volunteers monitor the speed of passing vehicles with a hand-held speed detection device. Offending vehicles’ details are recorded on a log sheet, including the names and signatures of the volunteers witnessing the offence, the make / model and registration number of the vehicle and the speed recorded by the hand-held device. Log sheets should be submitted to safer neighbourhood teams within seven days, who will arrange for warning letters to be sent to the registered keepers with advice on safer driving. Schemes will be evaluated to ensure they are having a positive impact on vehicle speed, driver behaviour and community reassurance. Which communities can have scheme? There are a number of criteria which must be met before a scheme will be established: • Speeding must have been identified as a PACT priority. • Active speed enforcement operations must not already be underway in the area by West Mercia Police or the Safer Roads Partnership.

40

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

• There must be at least six volunteers in each CSW scheme. • Speed checks must be conducted by at least three volunteers. • The area must have a 30 or 40 mph speed restriction. Can anyone become a volunteer? Schemes are open to anyone aged 18 or over. Volunteers will only be accepted onto a scheme once appropriate checks have been carried out. Volunteers must be able to make a regular commitment to carry out activity and must adhere to the scheme’s safety rules at all times. Although reasonable adjustments can be made, volunteers should be mindful of the physical nature of the role. Training will be provided covering areas such as health and safety, legislation and how to use the speed detection equipment. West Mercia Police reserve the right to withdraw permission for an individual to participate in a local scheme.

Safety Matters The safety of all road users is paramount in any initiative. The following rules must be adhered to at all times: • Volunteers must not stand in the road at any time or obstruct the footpath. • Volunteers must always work in groups of three, with one operating as a ‘safety lookout’. • Checks should only take place during daylight hours at locations which have been agreed and approved. • High visibility jackets must always be worn. • At least one volunteer must be in possession of a mobile phone. • Volunteers will be covered by the relevant force’s public liability and personal accident insurance policies. If you would like to start up a community speed watch campaign in your area please get in touch with your local Parish Council who will then contact the local Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Companionship, friendship and fun are guaranteed! • Dogs to suit your lifestyle • Completely flexible • Trial stays to ensure compatibility • Full support and advice • A playmate for your own dog

Tandem Head Shave for Charity M

y name is Lisa Osborne, and my son Billy was diagnosed with Juvenile and Enthesitis-Related Arthritis (ERA) at the age of 9, and has had a battle on his hands ever since. Arthritis Care have given my son the freedom to feel and live as normal a life as possible. They have encouraged and guided him, and provided lasting friendships that my son can take with him throughout his life’s journey. My sister, Harriet, and I are shaving our heads in a Tandem Female Head Shave as a fundraising event for Arthritis Care and Arthritis Research UK. We are trying to raise as much money as we can in order to give a

little back as a ‘thank you’ to them for their endless charitable work. I can honestly say my son would not be who he is today without the friendships, meetings and support Arthritis Care have given. So please donate as much as you possibly can . . . after all every little helps. As part of the fund-raiser, we have arranged for a coffee morning to be held at The Bulls Head, Inkberrow on Friday 18th May from 10am to 1.30pm, with all

proceeds going to the Arthritis team. The Tandem Head Shave will also be held at The Bulls Head, Inkberrow on Sunday 1st July at 3pm. In addition, we have a ‘Just Giving’ page for those who are unable to join us or prefer to donate anonymously https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/lisa-osborne01

The 41st Ashton under Hill Open Gardens 2018 Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th June www.ashtonopengardens.co.uk

“Down Yonder - one of the many pretty gardens and picturesque properties in Ashton under Hill (Photo: Steve Gledhill)

Villagers already preparing for annual Open Gardens event As most of the country seems to be emerging from winter, gardeners in the pretty Worcestershire village of Ashton under Hill are already planning their gardens for their 41st annual Open Gardens event, on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th June 2018. The event generally attracts well over 1000 visitors. Guests regularly return to visit the gardens in the village from homes in the neighbouring villages, surrounding counties of Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and Oxfordshire and across the Cotswolds. Visitors also come from much further afield though from around the UK and even from overseas. As in previous years guests will be able to wander round a wide range of gardens around the village with all types of garden, big and small, some with water features, some cut into the lower slopes of Bredon Hill. This year it is expected that 24 gardens will be open with a small number of additional front gardens that can be viewed from the pavements. New dog, New tricks A

chance encounter, a love story, and a travel adventure … no, it’s not the latest novel from Mills & Boon, but instead the work of a new local author (pen name - Jo Rowe) of books for younger children. Jo is a ‘daughter of Evesham’, born in a house that still stands on Waterside. After a career with several prestigious organisations in London, and the establishment of a successful business, ‘Jo’ recently fulfilled two of her longstanding ambitions. The first was to return to live in Evesham (and thanks to modern technology is still able to work with her clients in London), the Second was to publish her first book for 3 – 8year olds: ‘Woof of the Woo’. An enchanting tale, exquisitely illustrated by Ali Rice, a talented local artist. The book recounts (in verse) a true story, the reallife encounter (in Spain) with a

refuge dog (William a.k.a. Woof of the Woo), his adoption and journey to the UK with Jo, the author. Jo, (aka Joanne) had been staying in La Cala de Mijas, a few miles from Fuengirola, on the Costa del Sol, Spain on a two-month working holiday (also enabled by the internet). She gave up some of her free time to be a volunteer working at the nearby ACE Refugio, which has very similar aspirations as our own ‘DogsTrust’ which will never put down a healthy animal. William’s tale: he had been abandoned, was living on the streets and like other strays was rounded up by the local authorities and incarcerated in a PERRERA (killing Station). But, thanks to the ACE Refugio La Cala de Mijas, William was rescued from a grisly fate. The ACE Refugio has a long history of finding new homes in

Spain for their canine refugees. Many are sent abroad, mostly to join families in Belgium and Holland but also Germany and the UK. This is facilitated by the use of ‘Pet Passports’ which (along with a unique microchip buried beneath the skin), establish an animal’s ‘credentials’ and inoculation history. The whole process of shipping a documented animal overcomes the need to place them in quarantine when they arrive in the UK. Love at first sight: One morning, in a group of new arrivals was a small timid black puppy. Their bond wasn’t instant, as the nervous and shy creature would often run and hide. Over many days and weeks Joanne helped William become used to human contact and gained both his trust and affection. “I’m bringing him home” she told her husband. He too was delighted, as they had recently decided that a dog would be a splendid addition to their ‘family’ which already included three cats. A travel crate was ordered, and a flight from Malaga to London Gatwick was booked. For the next few weeks, during the early mornings Joanne continued to tend to her canine friends at the Refugio, from midmorning her clients in London
