It all starts again W

alking between the bird feeders on a grey January day I was enjoying the delicate scent of Wyche hazel and winter flowering honeysuckle, when I was brought up sharply by a much more pungent smell - a fox had passed through sometime before dawn. Nice to know they are around, but I’d rather have the perfume of my shrubs. The mist thickened as I continued my rounds with peanuts, sunflower hearts and suet pellets; something for every bird’s palate. High up on a pear tree, a small flock of bullfinches glowed like forgotten Christmas baubles. A tiny goldcrest flitted amongst the snow damaged branches of a conifer. Daffodils, now in flower, had pushed their way through sheltered soil under the shrubs, and just before February snowdrops lit my way to the feeders, even in the mist. There is always a time, in every season, when change is noticeable. It’s in the air, that subtle feeling of something ending. In winter it’s the lengthening days, the birds singing again, the feel of the earth slowly wakening, of being on the verge of life emerging once more. When that day arrives, I can look forward to spring. This year there will be the added task of releasing the hedgehog back into the garden, if all continues to go well.

It was fun, back in January, to watch a blue tit claim nesting rights to a nest box on the wall of the house. At breakfast each morning I watched her view her ‘des. res’. It would perch on the edge of the entrance, peer in, then disappear inside for a closer look. After a few minutes, out it would pop, satisfied this was just the nursery she needed. Other’s had the same idea and the competition lined up on a nearby cable ready to move in on the blue tit’s claim. But it was having none of it. Sidling along the cable, wings outstretched, crest up, angry as only a blue tit can be, it saw them all off. This nest box has been used for many years, predominately by blue tits, but occasionally a wren has managed to get in first. Broods have always been successful and the birds have given good breakfast time entertainment every year. article & photos by Geraldine Holbourn writing from the Malvern Hills

All through March I will be watching the weather forecasts and hoping for a week of suitable weather. The hedgehog refused to hibernate, so I will weigh it before release and also continue to feed it until I know there is plenty of natural food available. I hope it will do well, but I will be keeping a close eye To outadvertise for it, just incall case.01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk 4

On to this month’s magazine. St Richard’s Hospice are trying to raise a significant amount in order to expand their premises and accommodate more patients. If you are interested in helping this very worthwhile organisation, have a look at their article on page 26, or give them a call to find out how you can help. Another organisation worth supporting is Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and on page 40 you can read about how Mandy Edwards and her family have raised thousands of pounds for the hospital, and why. As well as all our regular advertisers, we have several new ones again this month, so look out for them as you browse through the magazine.

March of course means daffodils, mad hares and Mother’s Day, so husbands and kids, don’t forget: Sunday 11th March – flowers, chocolates and breakfast in bed for Mum! And I’m sure she’d love a nice lunch out somewhere special.

As I mentioned last month, this year Easter Sunday and April Fool’s Day are on the same day – the first time since 1956 – so watch out for those Easter Eggs! And if you have a special Easter event, or perhaps a range of Easter eggs or chocolates you’d like to promote, give me a call on 01684 833715 or email me the details to info@grapevinepublications.co.uk – the deadline for the April magazine is 8th March. Till next month, keep happy and healthy.

Agatha Christie “Plots come to me at such odd moments, when I am walking along the street or examining a hat shop . . . suddenly a splendid idea comes into my head.” Agatha Christie was born in 1890 in Torquay and spent most of her childhood with imaginary friends. She had little formal education. On 13th April 1917, during the First World War, she qualified as a dispenser, thus acquiring the knowledge of poisons that would be included in her future novels. Her first novel ‘The Mysterious Affair at Styles,’ published in 1920, was written in response to a challenge by her sister. It featured the now-famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. Her second novel ‘The Secret Adversary’ grew from a conversation overhead in a teashop. “Two people were talking at a table nearby discussing someone called Jane Fish. That, I thought, would make a good beginning to a story.” She made endless notes in dozens of notebooks, jotting down erratic ideas and potential plots and characters as they came to her. Newspaper reports also inspired novels. For instance, the exploits of Jack the Ripper were the basis for the serial killings in ‘The ABC Murders.’ These were a series of murders carried out by

10

an alphabetically obsessed killer travelling by train and taunting Hercule Poirot with letters informing him where he was going to strike next – Andover, Bexhill-on-Sea, Churston in Torbay. Alongside each corpse was a copy of the ABC Railway Guide open at the town where the killing had taken place. The story behind ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ was the Lindbergh baby case – a murder investigation that took place in 1932 and which dominated the newspaper headlines on both sides of the Atlantic. Famous American aviator Charles Lindbergh’s toddler son was abducted and later found murdered, despite a large ransom being paid. At the time of writing the novel, the culprit was still at large. The plot of ‘Mrs McGinty’s Dead’, a murder mystery investigated by Hercule Poirot and Ariadne Oliver, is based on the murder committed by Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen who was brought to justice when wireless

was used for the first time in a murder hunt. Crippen had murdered his wife by giving her poison and then buried her remains in the cellar. He claimed she’d gone back to America. However, after he moved his mistress Ethel le Neve into the house, suspicions were aroused and the couple fled on the SS Montrose bound for Canada. During her lifetime Agatha Christie produced over ninety books – some of them under the pen names of Mary Westmacott and Christie Mallowan. She also wrote plays – the most famous of which is The Mousetrap. Many people have wondered why her most famous play The Mousetrap hasn’t been made into a film. The reason for this is that she included a clause in the contract stating that until the run of the play had finished, this was not to happen. The play has been running since 1952 and shows no signs of coming to an end.

Neutering E

very spring and summer we are inundated with litters of unwanted kittens. This is as a result of people not having their male and female cats neutered. Having to care and re-home these kittens puts a lot of strain on the volunteers and resources at the rescue. Although the kittens are cute, and homes can be easily found, they also grow to be adult cats who can then reproduce from a very early age. It can be saddening to see cats, some as young as 6 months, coming to the rescue, pregnant or with a litter of kittens, when they are still so young themselves. Also during kitten season, the older cats waiting for homes at the rescue centre are often overlooked, and have to wait longer for a new home as people favour a cute kitten. There are so many unwanted cats and kittens, throughout the year, it is vital that un-neutered cats are neutered to keep these numbers down. It can be difficult to continue to find suitable or enough homes for all of the cats already in care, without adding to the numbers. The operation to have cats neutered is a routine procedure, from which the majority of cats recover very quickly: the males are castrated and the females are spayed. Neutering not only stops unwanted pregnancies but it can also prevent other health issues, fighting and spraying. If you have a un-neutered male cat he may wander for miles looking for a female and become lost; having him neutered would reduce the straying.

It is one of Cats Protection's main objectives to support and encourage neutering and so at Evesham Cats Protection we are able to offer a voucher towards the cost of having cats neutered. If you need help with this then please contact the rescue and enquire if you can apply for a voucher - in most cases you need to be on a low income. All cats that are old enough are neutered when they leave Evesham Cats Protection, and if you adopt a kitten from the rescue centre, then the neutering will be paid for when the kitten is old enough for the operation. When a kitten is adopted from the rescue centre an agreement is signed to say that the kitten will be neutered when old enough. Now is a good time to think about having your cat neutered as it is this time of year when the adult cats will be looking for a mate. It is part of responsible cat ownership to have your cat neutered. If you have an un-neutered cat, whatever their age may be, please don't delay - call your vet today. If you need financial help towards the cost of the operation then please enquire with the rescue on 01386 833343 or pop in to 95 Pitchers Hill, open 10am to 3.30 pm every day.

If a female cat is not neutered, she can be responsible for as many as 20,000 descendants in 5 years; if her off spring are not neutered the cycle continues. Without neutering, both male and female cats, then the cat population would soon become out of control.

go upstairs and look down on it from different windows to give you different angles. This will be like looking down on a plan and you can visualise your new bed.

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Planting a new area of Your Garden N

ow that spring is in the air, look at planting up sections of your garden. If you have got an area that you would like to plant up, the first thing is to work out how long you can spend maintaining it. There is not much point planting a massive area of garden and finding its an absolute nightmare to weed and the thing gets overgrown. Once you know how much time you can commit to it, the next stage is

14

marking out. This can already be for an existing flower bed that you want to revamp - maybe because it is full of unwanted weeds or the shrubs have got too old and tired and need replacing. If it is an area of lawn which is to be turned into a flower bed, you are going to need to mark out. The best way to do this is either with some marker spray, bamboo canes or even some hose pipe to mark out the area. You should then go into your house,

Then you need to work out whether you are going to have any specimen plants - if you can find something that is roughly the same height as the plant you would like, you can place this in the bed to make sure that you can view it from the places in your garden and house from where you would like to see it. A chair is often a useful item to place in the bed to mimic a plant. This is important to make sure you will be able to see your specimen plant and that it will stand out and be a feature point in the bed. If you are creating a type of secret garden the same practice applies, where you can come around the corner and be surprised by the specimen plant. The next stage is the most important stage: the research. Use a soil pH test to find out what sort of soil you have; look at the sun and where it rises and sets and how much sun the bed will get. If you are doing this when the trees aren’t yet in full leaf, work out whether this will affect the bed.

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

Work out all the pros and cons of the bed, and that will give you the options of which plants you can use. Also look at the time of year - if you have been in the garden for the entire year, you will know whether the area gets very wet in the winter or very dry in the summer. Choosing your plants Sometimes this is best done slowly as plans will change as plants mature. However, have a list of plants you think you can fit into the garden. Work out their ultimate sizes so you can position them accordingly. To begin with, if you are buying very small plants you will find that the area looks very empty. If this happens do not panic and buy more plants to fill the gaps because once the plants have grown there will not be space for everything in the bed.

members then phone me up in the spring to buy the plants off the list and we then come with the plants for the plan and plant it up. If you cannot afford all the plants at once I would recommend buying the most mature specimen plants you can afford. Spending a little more on these plants will pay off in the end. Often specimen plants are slow

growing so you want to buy a big enough plant to give the wow factor. If there are herbaceous plants in the bed which grow very quickly, I would recommend buying the smallest plants possible to give a size difference. If you have to buy them in small 9cm pots, grow them on into larger pots before finally planting them out.

Some of my clients ask me to make a planting plan which they then hand out to other family members as Christmas presents. The family If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. Crofton Beam Engines O

n a recent visit to Wiltshire, my husband Michael and I visited the site of the Crofton Beam Engines. These are the world's oldest Beam Engines, still able to perform the job for which they were built. We were amazed at their history, and that they were still in working order. The Crofton Beam Engines were built 200 years ago to pump water up hill to the highest point of the Kennet & Avon canal. Being still in working condition, they represent an installation which has major international significance for industrial archaeology. They illustrate directly the development of motive power and canal transport, both important elements of the industrial revolution which laid the foundation stone of the developed world we know today. A team of dedicated volunteers look after the site for future generations to see how our great pioneering engineers tackled early developments in motive power and pumping technology. When we visited the site, we saw why Crofton is regarded as such a gem in the heritage of UK engineering. In recognition of their historical significance, the two engines (one of which is of original Boulton & Watt construction), plus the engine house, all have Grade 1 Listed status. In keeping with that status, the volunteers try hard to retain the pumping station and the appearance of the engines in the condition that existed when they were first put into use. The engines still keep the canal full when in steam, so they are maintaining a living installation rather than a museum. One of the most popular times to visit is on a steaming day; this is usually on weekends, and a great opportunity to see the boilers in action. The Worcestershire Grapevine

The place really comes to life with the hand-stoked Lancashire boilers in operation, 6 and 4 tonne oscillating beams and tonnes of water cascading into the canal leat. The Beam Engines can be run on steam to special order. If you have an event you would like to celebrate, or a group of people who would like a unique experience, please visit the website www.croftonbeamengines.org, where you will find a list of special events through 2018, opening times, prices, and lots of useful information. Much of the Crofton site, including the Engineman’s Rest Cafe, has easy access on compacted cinder pathways. The canal and engine house have steps, which are not readily accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. A standard ticket on steaming days allows you unlimited entry to the pumping station, for 12 months. Accompanied children under 16 are always free. It’ really is a family day out that's too good to miss! article & photos by Pamela Green

Garden & Shed Security

A

s spring approaches, many people across West Mercia will be turning their attention to the garden, others will be taking out their bikes to enjoy the warmer weather, or preparing the BBQ. Many people store their gardening equipment, tools, bikes and BBQ s in their shed and, unfortunately, this means that these outbuildings are often seen as an easy target by thieves. The basics of protecting your home and garden Thieves will generally take the easiest option when considering breaking into a shed, outbuilding or home and security measures, such as a side gate and motionactivated lighting, can deter the would-be thief.

Another way to protect your home is to plant prickly hedging around the perimeter of your garden. How much is the contents of your shed worth? We have had a number of items stolen from sheds across the rural areas recently. When asked what is in their shed many people will answer something like 'Just a few old tools', 'A bit of fishing tackle', 'The kids toys', 'Nothing much just junk'. Because people think that the contents of their shed have little value they pay little attention to shed security. But what if you had to replace the contents of your shed, just how much would it cost? Write a list and add up just what

you do keep in your shed and its replacement cost, but beware you may be in for a shock, it is sometimes the case that the value of property people keep in their shed adds up to more than the value of the property in their living room. Now, is the security on your shed really up to the job? Follow these few simple guidelines to reduce the chances of your shed falling prey to thieves ▪▪ Keep your shed in good condition ▪▪ Fit a good quality closed shackle padlock to the door ▪▪ Hasp and staples should be bolted through the door ▪▪ Secure the hinges by using

However, there are other ways to protect your home and garden. Gravel paths and drives are a fantastic way of cheaply and unobtrusively discouraging a thief from entering your garden. Gravel makes a loud noise when stepped on which carries well at night and may wake the home owners, neighbours or a dog. This is instantly off-putting to a thief.

either clutch screws or by replacing a couple of the screws with bolts ▪▪ Fit grilles or mesh to the windows ▪▪ Old net curtains on the inside of the windows can hide the contents of your shed ▪▪ Invest in an alarm ▪ ▪ Large items such as bicycles should be chained together. It is much more difficult for a thief to carry away a lot of large heavy items all at once ▪▪ Mark your property with your postcode and house number/name ▪▪ Register your property at www.immobilise.com Remember the tools and equipment you keep in your shed could be used to force entry into your home, causing you even more expense and hassle.

General garden precautions Don't leave items in your garden that could make the life of a thief any easier. For example, a ladder left out in your garden could be used to get into the upper floor of your home or onto the top of your shed. Likewise, other tools and gardening equipment left outside could be used to break into your home.

DINE IN STYLE: Searcys St Pancras Restaurant

S

t Pancras International is an iconic venue. ‘Meet me at the Champagne Bar at St Pancras’, certainly says, “I have arrived!” This is where Eurostar trains arrive and depart. The shopping is quality retail therapy. Searcys St Pancras Restaurant is very impressive and their adjacent Champagne Bar, with heated leather seating and ‘press for champagne’ buttons, has 98m of serving space and is reputed to be Europe’s longest. Elegance and splendour is all around. Regular train services from the Midlands and elsewhere, including south east England, arrive here. London underground and Thameslink services are fast and frequent, too. The upper level at St Pancras International has a 9m high statue titled ‘The Meeting Place’, depicting a couple embracing-celebrating romance and travel. Also, a statue of Sir John Betjeman commemorates the

poet’s successful campaign to save the station, from demolition, during the 1960’s. The Searcys St Pancras Restaurant is very stylish, with pristine table settings and is located on the upper level at St Pancras International. Starters include Smoked Salmon, Scallops and Wild Venison Salami, amongst an array. Chicken Caesar and Gressingham Duck Salads are very popular. Shellfish choices include various, different Oyster selections, plus Crab and Lobster, for example. Mains of Lake District Beef Cheek and Loin of Lakeland Venison, along with Cornish Bream and Brixham Fish Pie, have regular ‘devotees’. Succulent, tender Steaks are further options and Sirloin, RibEye, plus the House-Aged, Lake District Beef, are very much enjoyed, by many. The complementing flavours of the dishes are, truly, a genuine credit

to the talented team of chefs and kitchen personnel. Desserts include Norfolk Treacle Tart with Devonshire clotted cream, and Warm Chocolate Cake accompanied by whisky ice cream. A most impressive wines/drinks list has something for all palates. Tasting events include champagnes and happen regularly. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, plus pretheatre dining, are all available here, and, if time is of the essence, ‘express’ is no problem. All dietary requirements can be catered for, also private dining, parties and occasions, accommodated. Gift vouchers are available – perhaps surprise someone special? Hospice launches

Build 2020

appeal towards £5.3m expansion

S

t Richard’s Hospice has launched an appeal to the community to help raise the final £1.4m urgently needed to build a bigger hospice to care for more patients and families in Worcestershire. The £5.3m expansion and redevelopment plans for the Worcester site have already got off to a flying start with the golden windfall of a £2m gift in a Will from a Worcestershire supporter and pledges from Trusts and grant making foundations. Chief Executive June Patel explained, “Currently areas of our hospice building in Worcester are

26

bursting at the seams and we are struggling to respond to the everincreasing number of patients. We will have to expand and adapt our current space and services so we can better support our current patients and reach the unmet need of thousands of local people in the future. Demand for our care is set to rise sharply with our aging population and people living longer with multiple illnesses such as heart failure, Parkinson’s, and motor neurone disease as well as cancer.” She added, “Our vision is for a bigger hospice where we will be able to support people from the point they are diagnosed, improving their quality of life and offering support to their loved ones.

The bigger hospice, widespread redevelopment of the current building and a focus on more flexible, seven day a week care and support will mean we can reach more people in ways they want, helping them to learn new skills and strategies to manage their illness and increase independence as well as helping them to come to terms with the impact on their lives.” The redeveloped and extended building will include: • Larger rooms suitable for exercise based groups, for example adapted Tai Chi and yoga; • Specialist exercise studio with programmes designed by physiotherapists

• A kitchen where occupational therapists will help patients learn how to improve day to day living at home to encourage independence • Counselling rooms for supporting more patients and loved ones • Open art studio for patients and loved ones to express feelings through creativity • Music and horticultural therapy rooms where patients and families can benefit from the therapeutic impact on their health and well being • Complementary therapy rooms for treatments including reflexology and aromatherapy massage • A spacious social and eating area will be at the heart of the hospice building offering a comfortable space for patients, families, groups and volunteers to meet and support each other. The reception area will be re-configured to be offer a light space where visitors will be greeted with a warm and understanding personal welcome.

relief from symptoms; reduce stress, anxiety and depression as well as improve sleep. St Richard’s currently supports more than 3,000 people a year. They anticipate the bigger hospice will enable the hospice team to care and support up to 4,000 individuals by 2021/22. All the new and expanded services will run alongside St Richard’s current wide range of patient and family care including support in people’s own homes and 17 in-patient beds. Hospice Fundraising Director Tricia Cavell said, “We’re appealing to the public to help us raise the final £1.4m to fund this expansion. We rely on the generosity of the Worcestershire community and have done through the whole history of St Richard’s. We really appreciate the fact that our community has helped us at every stage of our hospice development. At the moment we have supporters who do lots of amazing things for St Richard’s, for example from holding a coffee morning or jumping out of a plane. And for the

Build 2020 appeal we’re asking people to do that one more thing to help us again so that together we can build this wonderful bigger St Richard’s Hospice.” St Richard’s Hospice provides free specialist palliative care for patients living with life-limiting illnesses and supports their loved ones. The hospice strives to provide the best medical, practical, emotional and social support they can to help people live life to the fullest, as independently as they can, for as long as they can. St Richard’s is an independent charity and relies on donations for three quarters of its annual £8.4m income with the remainder from the NHS. Pershore Rotary Concert O

n April 28th, Pershore Rotary is staging a musical event at the Abbey in aid of the Midlands Air Ambulance, the Club’s principal charity of the year, with a contribution being made to Pershore High School’s 2018 student exchange with Zambia. Pershore High School students will also be performing at the concert.

The objectives of the exchange are to enhance Pershore students’ understanding of the varied and diverse cultures in the world. Similarly, the Zambian students will be fully immersed in Pershore life and plan to visit Stratford-UponAvon, London and the Gower, plus the Malvern hills, Pershore Abbey and other important local places.

This year’s exchange follows a 15 day visit by Pershore High School 6th Form students in 2017 and continues an exchange lasting over 13 years, involving over 100 Pershore students. While in Zambia, the group get involved in a wide variety of activities in the community, including carrying out lessons at local schools, providing donations of clothes & school equipment, as well as volunteering with painting TB clinics, cleaning local areas and working in AIDS clinics.

Pershore High School’s exchange coordinator, Leane Watkin, said, "This exchange visit will be only the 2nd time the students have left Zambia or the city of Ndola. We take our mobility for granted and this is something that each student (and their families) will talk about for the rest of their lives. The exchange forges life time relationships.” The exchange visit is expected to give the Zambian students a greater chance of accessing further education

This year’s visit from students of Lubuto High School in Ndola, Zambia includes 4 Zambian students plus teacher and takes place in early July.

and enhance their career opportunities in Zambia. Pershore Rotary’s President Elect and concert organiser, Richard Williams, said, “Pershore Rotarians are immensely supportive of the High School’s exchange programme with Ndola, Zambia and the volunteering work carried out in the local community. Many life changing opportunities can evolve from these exchanges.” Rotary has been involved with youth exchanges for over 60 years, providing incredible opportunities for young people to see the world, experience a different way of life, maybe learn another language, make international friends and discover a lot about themselves whilst acting as an ambassador for their own country. Rotary is an organisation of men and women who volunteer their time and energy in support of their community. Organising a Lemur's Birthday Party is a Piece of Cake Once the presents were discovered, the boys could be heard excitedly calling the girls to explore their colourful gifts - it didn’t take long for the treats to disappear!

K

eepers at West Midland Safari Park are celebrating the 16th birthday of their eldest ring-tailed lemur. Birthday boy Irish was treated to a party with all of his ring-tailed family, with a birthday cake made of crushed leaf-eater pellets, garnished with apple sticks and decorated with chopped carrots in the shape of a 16. To complete the celebrations, the lemurs were gifted with colourful presents filled with tasty treats.

Jen Albutt, Lemur Keeper, said, “As keepers, it is great to see Irish reach a milestone age of 16. He has an important role in the group being 'the Dad' and helps keep everyone in line - well, he tries to! He loves nothing better than having a sunbathe, curling up with his family and munching on his favourite treat, grapes!” She continued, “Breeding programmes are essential in helping to conserve species such as lemurs, as 95% of all lemur species are currently endangered in the wild. Irish has therefore played an important role as our breeding male. We all look forward to seeing him enjoy his twilight years here at West Midland Safari Park.”

Home to three different species of lemur red-bellied, white-fronted brown and ring-tailed lemurs - the Park celebrated these fantastic animals in 2017 by dedicating a week to raising funds for the Lemur Conservation Association, an organisation who work to protect lemurs and their habitats. Irish first came to the Safari Park seven years ago and was born at Belfast Zoo, which is why he is aptly named. Since being at the Park, he has fathered a total of twenty baby lemurs, which is great news for this endangered species. Although he is the oldest ringtailed lemur at the Park, lemurs can live between 20-30 years in captivity. Now at the grand age of 16, Irish will be taking a wellearned rest and keeping an eye on the younger, more mischievous members of the troop.

Being the oldest male of the troop of 13 lemurs, there were lots of treats to go round and Irish seemed Lemurs are amongst the most to enjoy his birthday party by endangered mammals in the The lemurs can be seen in Lemur sharing his cake with his four sons world and face continued threats Woods, which is included in the - Bilbo, Bakari, Banafu andToCaesar. to their habitat in their native standard admission charge of advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk 30

Vet Talk

T

here has recently been a lot of publicity in the media regarding an emerging disease, emotively named Alabama Rot, but what actually is it and what are the symptoms we should be looking out for in our dogs? What is Alabama Rot? As this is a new condition, our knowledge of the disease is constantly expanding. The disease results in tiny blood clots forming in blood vessels which become blocked, leading to subsequent damage of the surrounding tissue. In the skin, this causes ulceration; however, in the kidney it can lead to severe organ dysfunction (kidney failure). At the present time the exact causes of Alabama Rot are unknown, although an environmental cause is considered possible it has not yet been confirmed. What we do know is that most cases occur in the winter (52%) and spring (40%) when the ground is wet and muddy. It is thought that only about 25% of the dogs who present with skin lesions (most commonly on the paws, underbelly, muzzle and tongue) actually go on to develop kidney failure. There have been several confirmed (and more suspected) cases in the local area, but as the actual cause is still unknown, it is

Alabama Rot Update very difficult for us to give specific advice on which areas are best avoided when out walking; however the majority of previous cases have been walked in wet and muddy areas. Symptoms to look out for The first symptoms tend to appear on average three days after infection. These tend to be skin related but can include a lack of energy, poor appetite or vomiting. These are relatively common symptoms in our patients for other reasons as well, but if you are concerned please ring to speak to one of our vets.

to check regularly for any unexplained sores on their lower legs, paws, underside of the body and the tongue. If you have found any unexplained sores on your dogs, or are at all concerned or would just like some more information on this condition – please do not hesitate to call the surgery and ask to speak with one of our vets.

Our advice to owners We are advising owners to wash any part of their dog that becomes wet and muddy on a walk and

superb facilities for the event. The 8th annual craft event on Saturday 17th November is a major contributor to my fund raising. This year I am determined to hit the record-breaking £22,000 mark”

Mandy Edwards of Badsey Lane, Evesham has fund-raised for the hospital for the last 14 years and has donated a total of £19,100 to Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Mandy fund raises in a number of ways including stalls at local craft fairs, selling plants and garden produce outside their house, and organising her annual craft fair with her Mum, in November each year at Childswickham.

Mandy’s daughter, Bethan, 13, has a rare life-limiting heart condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome which means that she only has half a heart. Bethan’s dad, Bryan, says: “Birmingham Children’s Hospital have been brilliant in their care for Beth. She experienced 4 open heart surgeries in her first 5 years, with the first one at just 3 days old. Her on-going care at the hospital has been exceptional and we cannot praise them enough”.

Mandy says: “The organisation of my craft event is enormous with planning starting each January. From confirming stall holders to securing raffle prizes, we have been so grateful to Leedons Park Broadway for the use of their

Easy Tips for Planning a Healthy Diet & Sticking to it Set yourself up for success Simplify: instead of being overly concerned with counting calories or measuring portion sizes, think of your diet in terms of colour, variety, and freshness. Start slow and make changes to your eating habits over time. Changing everything at once usually leads to cheating or giving up on your new eating plan. Make small steps, like adding a salad (full of different colour vegetables) to your diet once a day or switching from vegetable or olive oil to organic coconut oil when cooking. Moderation is key Try not to think of certain foods as “off-limits.” When you ban certain foods or food groups, it is natural to want those foods more, and then feel like a failure if you give in to temptation. I usually stick with the 90%-10% rule:

42

90% of the time you stick to a clean healthy diet, 10% of the time you can treat yourself – just a little bit! Fill up on colourful fruits and vegetables Fruits and vegetables are the foundation of a healthy diet. They are low in calories and nutrient dense, which means they are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre. Eat more healthy carbs and whole grains Choose healthy carbohydrates and fibre sources, especially whole grains, for long lasting energy. In addition to being delicious and satisfying, whole grains are rich in phytochemicals and antioxidants, which help to protect against coronary heart disease, certain cancers, and diabetes.

Studies have shown people who eat more whole grains tend to have a healthier heart. A quick definition of healthy carbs and unhealthy carbs: Healthy carbs (sometimes known as good carbs) include whole grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables. Healthy carbs are digested slowly, helping you feel full longer and keeping blood sugar and insulin levels stable. Unhealthy carbs (or bad carbs) are foods such as white flour, refined sugar, and white rice that have been stripped of all bran, fibre, and nutrients. Unhealthy carbs digest quickly and cause spikes in blood sugar levels and energy. Enjoy healthy fats & avoid unhealthy fats Good sources of healthy fat are needed to nourish your brain, heart, and cells, as well as your hair, skin, and nails.

Add to your healthy diet: ■■ Monounsaturated fats, from plant oils like canola oil, peanut oil, and olive oil, as well as avocados, nuts (like almonds, hazelnuts, and pecans), and seeds (such as pumpkin, sesame). ■■ Polyunsaturated fats, including Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, found in fatty fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies, sardines, and some cold water fish oil supplements. Other sources of polyunsaturated fats are unheated sunflower, flaxseed oils, and walnuts. Reduce or eliminate from your diet: ■■ Saturated fats, found primarily in animal sources including red meat and whole milk dairy products. ■■ Trans fats, found in vegetable shortenings, some margarines, crackers, sweets, cookies, snack foods, fried foods, baked goods, and other processed foods made with partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. Put protein into perspective Protein gives us the energy to get up and go - and keep going. Protein in food is broken down into the 20 amino acids that are the body’s basic building blocks for growth and energy, and essential for maintaining cells, tissues, and organs. A lack of protein in our diet can slow growth, reduce muscle mass, lower immunity, and weaken the heart and respiratory system. Protein is particularly important for children, whose bodies are growing and changing daily. Try different types of protein ■■ Beans: Black beans, navy beans, garbanzos, and lentils are good options. ■■ Nuts: Almonds, walnuts, pistachios, and pecans are great choices. – but also high in fats too. ■■ Avoid salted or sugary nuts and refried beans. Girls' getaway weekend!

Answers to Trivia on page 45:

Four friends spend several weeks planning the perfect girls getaway trip . . . shopping, casinos, massages, facials etc.

1. Spinach

Two days before they are due to leave, Mary's husband puts his foot down and tells her she isn't going. Mary's friends are very upset that she can't go, but what can they do.

4. India

Two days later the other three friends get to the hotel only to find Mary sitting in the bar drinking a glass of wine. "Wow, how long have you been here and how did you talk your husband into letting you come?" they asked. "Well, I've been here since last night." she replied. "Yesterday evening I was sitting on the couch when my husband came up behind me, put his hands over my eyes and said 'Guess who?' I pulled his hands away to find all he was wearing was his birthday suit! He took my hand and led me into the bedroom. The room was scented with perfume, there were two dozen candles burning and rose petals scattered around the room, and on the bed . . . he had handcuffs and ropes. Then he told me tie and cuff him to the bed, so I did. And then he said, 'Now you can do whatever you want.'

10 Important Facts to Remember 1. Death is the No. 1 killer in the world. 2. Life is sexually transmitted. 3. Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die. 4. Men have two motivations: hunger and hanky-panky, and they can't tell them apart. If you see a gleam in his eyes . . . make him a sandwich. 5. Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks, months, maybe even years. 6. Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in the hospital, dying of nothing. 7. All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism. 8. In the 60's, people took LSD to make the world weird. Now the world is weird, and people take Prozac to make it normal. 9. Life is like a jar of jalapeno peppers. What you do today may be a burning issue tomorrow. 10. Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.
