Hello Readers... Welcome to the June & July issue of The Worcestershire Grapevine. I hope I’m not tempting fate, but it looks like this year’s very wet spring is finally over, and summer is here at last. Time to get out the sunscreen and barbeques, and enjoy the lovely long summer evenings.

Grapevine TThe Worcestershire

There’s lot happening in the next couple of months, in particular of course there’s the The Pershore Plum Festival, which starts on 8th July. This is followed by the Bishampton Summer Fete on 14th July, after which there’s the Welland Steam Rally on 27th July. In addition, there’s all the usual activities listed in the What’s On pages, with plenty of outdoor attractions to entice you out into the sunshine.

The Cats Protection Open Day last month was a great success, thanks to all the members of the public who attended, but as always there are a number of cats needing homes. This month we feature three rather special ‘moggies’ who need equally special homes, so if you think you fit the bill, why not go along and meet your potential new companion.

Then try 50lb potato bags, and eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight out for more than a full minute. Teacher arrested at Heathrow A school teacher was arrested at Heathrow Airport this morning as he attempted to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a compass, a slide-rule and a calculator. At a press conference just before noon today, the Home Secretary said he believes the man is a member of the notorious AI Gebra movement. Although he did not identify the man, he confirmed he has been charged by the police with carrying weapons of maths instruction. "AI-Gebra is a problem for us", the Home Secretary said. "They derive solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in search of absolute values. They use secret code names like “x” and "y" and refer to themselves as "unknowns" but we have determined that they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philosopher Isosceles used to say: 'There are 3 sides to every triangle.'" The Home Secretary went on to say "Teaching our children sentient thought processes and equipping them to solve problems is dangerous and puts our government at risk."

I

t would seem that the warmer weather has finally made an appearance which means our dogs and cats are more at risk of catching fleas. Some pets suffer from an allergic reaction to the flea saliva and need only a couple of bites to trigger a severe skin reaction. In some cases, pets with a heavy flea burden can become anaemic. For these reasons, it is important to treat your pet regularly against fleas. To understand how to control fleas, it is important that we understand their life cycle. 1. Only the adult fleas are present on our pets. The ones we see make up less than 5% of a flea problem. 2. Each adult female flea can lay up to 40 – 50 eggs per day, which will drop off your pet. These then lay dormant in your carpets, upholstery and bedding for up to a year. 3. The eggs will hatch into larvae which live off flea faeces and dead organic matter in the carpet, bedding or upholstery, after which they pupate. The pupae stage (or cocoon) can remain dormant in the house for up to a year. 4. The pupae are then stimulated into hatching by movement and warmth

Flea Focus provided by passing pets or people. 5. The adult fleas then emerge and are ready for their first meal and to begin the life cycle all over again When we look at the life cycle, it is easy to see why pets (and some people) suffer so much and why fleas can even be a problem in the winter. So, how do you know if your pet has fleas? • He or she may be scratching • Tiny black flecks of ‘flea dirt’ in the pets fur or left on the bedding • Areas of irritated skin • Patches of hair loss How do you control fleas? It is important to use a product specifically designed for the animal type. This is because some of the products designed for treating dogs contains an ingredient called Permethrin which is highly toxic to cats. We

have a number of products available in our parasite “toolbox”, including sprays, collars, spot-ons and a very effective tablet for dogs which will provide three months' protection. Worried about forgetting to purchase the next treatment? Don't worry, we offer a text reminder service that will inform you when your pet is due the next treatment. When you receive this message you simply give the surgery a call to order and our team will get it ready for you to collect.

blossom and keep it with them as a way of attracting a husband. Hawthorn trees are often decorated with flowers, ribbons and bright scraps of cloth. Gifts of food and drink are sometimes left under the trees for the fairies.

B

eltane is a pagan festival celebrated on 1st May. The name originates from the Celtic god Bel – meaning ‘the bright one’ and the Gaelic word ‘teine’ that means ‘fire.’ The tree at the heart of this celebration is the hawthorn – usually a riot of creamy sweet-smelling blossom at this time of year. The hawthorn is known by a variety of different names – the May Tree, The Beltane Tree, The Whitethorn and The Quickthorn. It is also known as The Faerie Tree for it is said to guard the entrance to the faerie realm and it is still considered by some to be bad luck to harm one.

Traditionally, men and women bathed in the morning dew of the hawthorn blossom to increase wealth, health, good fortune and beauty. Women became more beautiful and men, by washing their hands in the dew, became skilled craftsmen. In some places, a May Queen is still chosen and dressed in a cloak and garland. The hawthorn blossoms are still used for garlands. However, using the blossom for decoration outside the home is fine, but it is considered very unlucky to bring it indoors as it is said to foretell serious illness and death. I remember doing so as a child and my grandmother threw blossoms and vase out of the window! Maypole dancing takes place on May Day in some towns and villages. This was outlawed after the English Civil War (1642 – 1651) when Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector. Many of the

maypoles were cut down and dancing was prohibited. However, when Charles II returned in 1660, many were reinstated. The strong cross-grained wood made good tool handles. However, it was considered wise to treat the hawthorn with respect and ask the tree’s permission before cutting any of its branches. The hawthorn has some benefits where hedgerow food and natural medicine are concerned. The young leaves can be eaten and are commonly known as ‘bread and cheese.’ The blossoms and berries can be made into wine and jellies. Decoctions of the flowers and leaves are known to stabilise blood pressure. An infusion of hawthorn is said to improve heartbeat rate and strength and help those who suffer with poor circulation. Hawthorn is also believed to relieve anxiety and is traditionally thought to mend broken hearts both emotionally and physically. A word of warning though - don’t experiment with cures yourself. Seek the advice of a qualified herbalist or homeopath.

The image of the fairy queen by her hawthorn tree is a reminder of the pre-Christian goddess-centred Sue Johnson worship. The site of Westminster Poet & Novelist Abbey was once known as Thorney Island because of the sacred stand of Creative Writing Workshops thorn trees that once stood there. W

est Midland Safari Park is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year with the help of their pride of African lions, one of the first species to arrive at the Park at its inception. Opened in the spring of 1973 by actress Sophia Loren, what began as a fairly small local attraction located in the heart of Worcestershire has now evolved into one of the largest attractions in the Midlands. From humble beginnings with a total of 447 animals recorded during its first year, the Park now holds 837 animals, including a

16

Times have very much changed since the early seventies, with many animals becoming endangered and close to extinction in the wild. Participating in 23 breeding programmes including Sumatran tigers, Eld’s deer and African wild dogs, conservation is at the heart of everything that is done locally, nationally and internationally. Births at the attraction are of particular importance due to the rate at which some of these beautiful species are reducing in the wild. Recent successes include Finn the tiny pancake tortoise, Fennessy the majestic Rothschild’s giraffe and halfsiblings Ekozu and Fahari, the adorable southern white rhinos.

As well as the four-mile self-drive safari and animal exhibits, the 200 acre site is now home to the largest dinosaur and ice age experiences in the UK - Land of the Living Dinosaurs and Ice Age - the latter of which opened earlier this year. Both exhibits feature enormous animatronic creatures complete with breathing and roaring sound effects, allowing guests to step back in time and embark on a prehistoric adventure like no other. The fun continues in the Adventure Theme Park, with rides and games available for all of the family. A staple for all good theme parks is the ‘Pirate Ship’, which was the first ride to be opened in 1983, closely followed by the ‘Congo Carousel’. Most recently opened in the area was the thrilling ‘Kong’, which was introduced in 2015.

th Anniversary 2018 also marks the 40th year of the Park’s Managing Director, Ivan Knezovich, who began working at the attraction as a Sea Lion Keeper in 1978. He said: “I am absolutely delighted that the Park has reached its 45th anniversary. The Park is much more than just a Safari Drivethrough - it is now a complete family day out with a huge range of activities and experiences to keep families coming back again and again, from one generation to the next.” He continued: “Our team, many who have been here over 25 years, have contributed to making the Park a destination that has won over 30 international awards during its evolution. From amazing wildlife exhibits and successful animal births to the recent opening of our fantastic prehistoric exhibits, we have expanded our business to

enable us to provide something for everyone and our future plans are even more exciting than the last 45 years combined.” He added: “For me personally, celebrating my own 40th year at the Park this year is a milestone filled with almost a lifetime of happy memories and amazing experiences.”

West Midland Safari Park is also responsible for two ex-Sea Life Centres in the seaside towns of Rhyl and Weston-super-Mare. Renamed SeaQuarium in 2001, each centre hosts over 30 exhibits, including British rays, turtles and collections of tropical fish. . . . /continued on page 18

Interactive, curriculum-linked sessions are delivered to students in hopes of inspiring a future generation of conservationists.

The Safari Drive-through, animal exhibits, Land of the Living Dinosaurs and Ice Age are included in the standard admission charge of £24 for adults, £19 for children aged 3-15 and £22 for concessions. Children under the age of three years are admitted free of charge. Admission includes a Free Return Ticket. Adventure Theme Park rides are charged extra. Why men shouldn’t write advice columns Dear John I hope you can help me. The other day, I set off for work, leaving my husband in the house watching TV.

My car stalled, and then it broke down about a mile down the road, and I had to walk back to get my husband’s helps. When I got home, I couldn’t believe my eyes. He was in our bedroom with the neighbour’s wife! I am 32, my husband is 34, and we have been married for 10 years. When I confronted him, he broke down and admitted they had been having an affair for the past six months.

Dear Sheila A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the vacuum pipes and hoses on the intake manifold and also check all grounding wires. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the injectors. I hope this helps, Regsards

15 Ways to Maximise Your Workout Kick Start Your Summer Fitness Plan TODAY! 1. Limit your workouts to 30-40 minutes Though the tendency of some people who really want to get a lot out of their workouts is to spend a lot of time at the gym, the truth is that after 30 or 40 minutes, the benefit isn’t as great. To go that long, you’d have to lower the intensity of the workout, and that means that you’re spending too much time working out. It’s better to work out at a higher intensity for a shorter amount of time. 2. High-intensity workouts If you’re just starting out with exercise, it’s best to take it slow. If

2222

you’re running or cycling, for example, build up your endurance for at least a month before you get into anything more intense. That means going at a rate where you can easily talk without being out of breath. However, once you have that base of endurance, step up the intensity to step up the effectiveness of the workout. 3. Protein Many people don’t pay enough attention to getting the protein their muscles need to rebuild. If you don’t, you are going to get very little out of your workout, as both cardio and strength workouts

require protein for building muscles. You can get protein from meat, fish, eggs and protein powders. 4. Water Be sure to hydrate throughout the day. It takes a couple of hours for your body to absorb the water, so you can’t just drink right before exercise. Make it a habit to drink water regularly throughout the day. We suggest a minimum of 2 litres of water each day. 5. Carbs Although the low-carb craze might say otherwise, carbs are our body’s main source of fuel. If you do intense workouts, you will need carbs, or you won’t have enough energy. If you do a shake, be sure to include carbs — or a banana is a great source of low fibre/high glycemic carbohydrates that you need for exercise. 6. Slow lifting Many people contract their muscles slowly and then release more quickly. But if you lift slowly in both directions, you are

maximizing each move. Lift and lower to a 5-second count in each direction.

into play. This gives you a stronger overall body and allows you to lift more over time.

7. Heavier weight When you’re starting out, it’s best to start with lower weights so you can focus on good form. But once you’ve got your form sorted, it’s best to lift the heaviest weights you can lift while still keeping good form. Don’t sacrifice form for heavy weights — that is ineffective. But heavy weights, with good form, can give you better results in a shorter amount of time. Heavy weights are not just for those who want to bulk up — that’s a common misconception.

11. Pick a cardio exercise you enjoy It’s no fun to exercise if you hate it. And you won’t keep it up for very long. Pick something that’s fun — running, walking, swimming, biking, hiking, rowing, etc. After the initial phase when you’re getting used to exercise, you’ll start to have a blast and look forward to it.

8. One set, to failure Instead of doing 2-3 sets, as many people do, maximise your effectiveness by doing just one, with heavy weights, until you can no longer keep the proper form. Lifting to “failure” doesn’t mean that you should lift the last few times with a wobbly or inefficient form.

12. Mix it up Don’t stick to the same workout routine for too long, or your body will adjust to the stress level and you won’t be getting an effective workout. For strength training, change your routine every few weeks.

9. Compound exercises Instead of isolating your muscles with exercises such as the bicep curl, you can maximise the time you spend in a workout by doing exercises that work multiple muscle groups at once. With just a few exercises, you could get a fullbody workout. Another benefit is that your muscles are working together as they do in the real world, rather than alone.

13. Good form For strength training especially, and swimming, form is very important, but it’s also important for other types of exercise. If you’re strength training, start with lighter weights so you can work on your form. It’s good to have an experienced spotter or trainer who knows good form to help you for the first month or so. Never sacrifice form for heavier weight. For swimming, you’ll need to get a coach to teach you form.

10. Balance lifting Instead of having exercises where you’re sitting down or holding on to something or otherwise stabilised, it’s more effective to do them standing up, or on one leg, or on a Swiss exercise ball. These types of exercises force you to balance yourself while lifting, which brings your core muscles

14. Hills If you run, bike or walk for cardio, you’ll want to incorporate hills (after the first month or two of doing it at an easy pace on flat ground). These will make you stronger and make your limited workout time even more effective.

Take them easy at first, but once you’re used to hills, you can get a good pace going. Either use a hilly route or do repeats on one hill. 15. Circuits One mistake that people make is to do multiple sets of the same exercise without rest between the sets. This doesn’t allow your muscles to recover and it’s a waste of your workout. But instead of doing a set, resting, and then doing your second set, it’s more effective to move on to multiple exercises in a circuit, so that you don’t rest between exercises but do rest each muscle group. This will give you a good cardio workout while you do your strength training. Bish Bosh Bash Summer Fete Competition Time!

Saturday 14th July 1pm to 4.30pm Last year saw the launch of the ‘Bishcuit’ competition inviting aspiring Mary Berrys to win the title of Champion Bishcuit maker. This year organisers are hoping to attract even more entries by adding a new under 12’s section. The challenge to both under and over 12s is to create a small, sweet, crisp, dry baked biscuit which captures the imagination of judge Veronica Most as worthy of being named official ‘Bishcuits’ for 2018.

aturday, 14th July is a date you should put firmly in your diary as Bishampton is holding its third Bish Bosh Bash Summer Fete – an event which has gone from strength to strength and attracts both local folk and those from further afield to St. James’ Church in the pretty, rural village of Bishampton.

Proud dog owners can put their pets through their paces by entering the Fun Dog Show organised by Kaye Littlehales from Evesham & District Training Club with four classes – Handsomest Dog; Prettiest Bitch; Waggiest Tail; Dog the Judge would like to take home for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. Kaye will be naming one of the winners from these four, Best in Show to win a super rosette to take home.

A host of stalls and entertainment are on offer, with music and dance thoughout the afternoon provided by Worcester Concert Brass and newcomers to the fete, Faithful City Morris. Those who enjoy creativity can marvel at the wonderful floral displays in St. James’ Church, and also the entries from this year’s children’s painting competition on My Favourite Things with a prize from Coach House Bookshop, Pershore.

Competition forms are available in the printed programme or by contacting Martin Dickinson on 01386 462733 or email mjf.dickinson@btinternet.com Meanwhile motor enthusiasts can also take pleasure in browsing – and voting for their favourites - in this year’s parade of Classic Cars including those

icons of the 60s – a Triumph Stag, and Mini Cooper S. Last year featured the wonderful 'duck tailed' speed hill climb 911 RSR Porsche Carrera and this year owner, Peter Ellingworth, may well bring a different, equally exotic, Porsche. This part of the event is being assembled by village self-confessed, petrolhead enthusiast and member of Midland Automobile Club, Tim King who still has a few surprises up his sleeve! Martin Dickinson from Bishampton & Throckmorton Parochial Church Council, who is organizing the event said: “We’re thrilled to be able to include these competitions to whet the appetite, in addition to the other attractions which means we have lots of activities to appeal to all tastes and ages.” And finally on the competition front, why not take your chances in the Grand Raffle? There are some fantastic prizes on offer, including a week’s self-catering in Aberdovey, for just £1 a go! The event is sponsored by Smart Cut Ltd, VCT Charitable Trust and Vectric Limited.

The Great British Blooming

J

ohn Ruskin, Victorian philanthropist, art critic and artist, once said, ‘There is no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather’ and I tend to agree with him. All weather is important, we need the rain and the sun and even the icy cold. And beauty can usually be found in all weathers; sparkling, snow blanketed landscapes, raindrops hanging from trees or captured in the leaves of plants and yes, even fog has its beauty. Just look at

the way it highlights cobwebs in the hedgerows, or how it turns familiar scenes into places of mystery and best of all, when the sun pierces a shroud of mist with shafts of light. But on the Malverns one March evening I wondered if Ruskin was right. It seemed like there’d been nothing but bad weather the scene as bleak as January, captured in monochrome without a hint of sun to give it any colour. Would spring ever arrive? Then a taste of summer in mid-April, and like an aperitif it whetted our appetites, had us all expectant of a delicious course to come; it didn’t appear. But the warm sun did bring something delightful. Native wildflowers have evolved to cope with the vagaries of the British climate. My wild daffodils had toughed out the cold spring the cultivars bowed their heads and sulked. The primroses ignored it and the bluebells hunkered down and waited. But that brief spell of sunshine and heady temperatures in the twenties triggered an explosion of blooms from trees to wildflowers; grim for hay-fever sufferers, but wonderful for everyone else.

The Worcestershire Grapevine

Cowslips thrust their butteryellow blooms above the grass on the side of my drive and as if a fairy godmother had waved her magic wand the green clad slopes were turned into a sapphire haze by bluebells and snuggled in amongst them, primroses added splashes of pale gold. An eruption of lady’s smock waved dainty, pale lilac flowers in the wind. Violets peeped, like shy maidens, through the grass fronds and as I tiptoed through them I thought of summer and the fritillary butterfly whose caterpillars will feast on the violets’ leaves. As if from nowhere forget-me-nots added their tiny flowers of ice blue to the pallet, the blackthorn, pear and cherry swathed the hedges in blooms of white lace, turning golden pink in the evening sun. The monochrome landscape was gone. In the dull days which followed that taste of summer the Hills were washed with colour. And there is more to come: clouds of hawthorn blossom, dazzling buttercups and dashing pink foxgloves. What isn’t there to love, even on a rainy day? Photos and article by Geraldine Holbourn

Raisin & Chocolate Ganache Meringues Meringues are a light but indulgent treat for any time of year and these chocolate versions are very decadent without taking too much time.

METHOD yy

Preheat the oven to 125°C. Whisk the egg whites until stiff.

INGREDIENTS

4 egg whites 300g sugar

yy

Add 200g of sugar whilst still whisking, until the meringue is very stiff.

yy

Stir in the remaining 100g of sugar.

yy

Place the mixture in a piping bag and pipe out 30 meringues on a tray lined with grease-proof paper.

yy

Place in the oven for approximately 30 minutes (with the door slightly open to allow moisture to escape) then turn oven off and leave the meringues inside.

yy

Once dry and light brown in colour take the meringues out of the oven and allow to cool.

yy

To make the ganache: heat the cream and vanilla in a pan to 72°C, then wait for two minutes before adding the milk chocolate and mixing well.

yy

Add the raisins and allow to cool.

yy

Brush the base of each meringue with melted chocolate.

yy

Once the chocolate has set, pipe a disc of ganache on to the meringue and place another on top to form a sandwich.

yy

Repeat with the remaining meringues (15 meringue sandwiches).

300g milk chocolate 150g double cream 5g vanilla essence 120g raisins 100g melted chocolate to coat the base of the meringue Makes 30 meringues

Special Cats needing Special Homes

W

ith the sun shining all bank holiday weekend, the recent Evesham Cats Protection Open Day was a huge success. People came throughout the day, bringing donations of cat food, enjoyed seeing the cats needing homes. They supported the stall, had go on the tombola and then cooled down with the homemade refreshments. It was our busiest Open Day so far and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped support it in every way. The Open Day all prepared, organised and managed by volunteers, so a big well done to them too ‌ they also needed refreshments to keep cool on the day!

Please call in, 95 Pitchers Hill, Wickhamford, Evesham, WR11 7RT or phone 01386 833343 for details.

Robbie

As always we have many cats needing a home, however all of the cats have slightly different needs due to their characters. So featured in this article are some who have some specific requirements for their new homes. So meet: Robbie: although he has teddy bear looks, he does not want to be handled or fussed. He prefers to have his own space and enjoys time outside as well as indoors. He is not a lap cat Lady: a petite cat, very shy and likes to hide under blankets. She needs a home where she can feel safe and be left alone.

Lady

Arabella: is a nervous cat, who does not want human contact and is happiest outside. Please note that whilst these cats are domesticated, they are not typical pet cats. They need their own space and will be homed where we feel the right requirements can be met. We hope they will be given the opportunity to live the life they want, in the safety and security of a home where they are provided for. We understand that these cats’ needs are not suited to everyone's homes, and there are many other cats at the rescue, who enjoy human company and need homes.

The Power of Garlic O

n a recent visit to the Isle of Wight, my husband Michael and I came across The Garlic Farm, and took their Garlic Experience.

The complete garlic experience consists of learning about the mysteries of garlic, its amazing flavours, and the healing and regenerative properties that have been captivating people for centuries. Simple remedies like crushing a clove in warm water and gargling will heal ulcers in the mouth and sore throats. As part of the Garlic Experience, you can learn more about cooking, growing and medical benefits of this incredible allium; learn about the history of the farm, and take a ride on a tractor and trailer around the growing fields. Alternatively, you can choose from one of the mapped out walking routes. We were amazed at the amount of information and recipes we were given - I was given a recipe for smoked garlic roast chicken, and Black Garlic Chocolate Brownies. For food and garlic lovers the Farm Shop was bursting with traditional, innovative, and some off-beat products, all guaranteed to please. We found mayo's, chutneys, pickles, relishes, mustards, sauces, beer, salt, olives, popcorn, pork scratchings, and even garlic vodka. We took the taste challenge, and tasted some delicious flavours, including the hottest flavours from around the world.

36

Lured by the aromas from the restaurant, we decided to have a break and sample some of their delicious garlic bread and cakes. There was a huge queue at the ice cream counter where excited children were waiting to taste home made garlic ice cream. I treated myself to a growing set consisting of garlic bulbs, and manure. Keen gardeners will know about the benefits of growing garlic, not just in a vegetable patch, or tubs, but if planted between rose bushes they protect against the incursion of greenfly and other garden pests... The farm has a large, unique planting stock to choose from, including the world famous Elephant Garlic, the largest garlic bulbs outside of the USA, and their garlic seeds have won RHS Gold Medal and coveted Awards of Gardening Merit. If you would like to sample all this perfection you can. You can also holiday in one of the farm’s six holiday cottages, or try one of their yurts. It’s a glorious setting, facing South, under the Downs, and just ten minutes from the sea. The Garlic Farm is open every day, from 9am until 5pm. Their website is www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk and phone number 01983 865378. article and photographs by Pamela Green

defined edge you are after. It is always a good idea to get rid of this small piece you are cutting out because it will have grass seeds on it etc., and if you flick it into the bed you will spread the weeds and grass into your bed.

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Lawn Edgings

N

ow the growing season has kicked off, edging is very important. Why do we edge a lawn? Well there are a number of reasons for doing this: one is to give a nice crisp edge and define your lawn. It always looks tidier and managed even if the beds aren’t up to scratch. The other reason for doing it is to keep grass and weeds from spreading from your lawn and onto your bed and vice versa. The traditional way to edge your

38

lawn is using a half moon tool and cutting a sharp defined edge. If you have no edge currently and would like to create an edge, the best thing to do is to lay a hosepipe out or some string, and shape the beds the way you would like them to look. When you’re doing this you need to bear in mind that you don’t want to create areas which are difficult to mow. Using a half moon or even a spade, cut down an inch and a half, and try and get a wedge out to give you the

There are other options, which are normally done during the winter to make life easier. A lot of clients are putting in block paving or sets down as an edge to the lawn. This needs digging out, concreting in place and pointing. The advantage of this is that you don’t need to edge up so it saves some time and when you are mowing you can run the mower on the edge of the sets giving it a nice crisp finish. You can put in a metal edge but this is best done when you are building the garden and laying the turf. This is because it is difficult to lay where there are dips, etc., in the lawn and needs pegging into place properly. The lawn would need top dressing and seeding in these areas to make it nice and level so that the mower doesn’t catch any edges. The disadvantage of this type of edging

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

is that if you want a very sharp finish to the lawn, the mower has to go right to the edges and if the mower falls off the edge of the lawn the metal can damage it. If you have time, using edging sheers or small detachable strimmers can be used to edge up. It is better to edge the lawn before mowing it so that the mower can pick up the cuttings etc. Some people edge up and leave the cuttings where they are; this is fine but can make the garden look messy with dying grass lying next to the nice crisp edge, so a bit of time spent collecting the trimmings will give a better finish.

Whilst you are edging up, it gives you an opportunity to go around and look at your borders in detail. You can then see things which you would not normally notice from a distance, e.g. green fly on your roses, which you can then treat accordingly. So having time to check your beds is quite important and doing this whilst edging your lawn makes it more time efficient.

ershore High School’s Interact Club have raised £1000 in support of their teacher, Mrs Rhodes, who ran the London Marathon on April 22nd 2018. The students arranged a variety of fundraising activities, including cake sales, book sales, and most successfully, the 26-coin challenge (in honour of the 26 mile run). Students have dedicated every Monday tutor time since October to plan, resource and deliver their fundraising, often giving up lunchtimes and after school to help raise money. Mrs Rhodes was raising money for The Make a Wish Foundation and finished the marathon in a fantastic time of 4 hours 53 minutes. Mrs Rhodes is pictured with her medal. 

CRACK DOWN ON

Drink Driving awareness, enforcement of these offences will be a key priority for West Mercia Police. Roadside checks will be carried out at all times of the day and night and on all types of road.

T

he Safer Roads Partnership in Warwickshire and West Mercia is warning people of the dangers of driving under the influence of drink or drugs this summer. Drink and drug driving offences typically increase during the summer with more opportunity for people to think they can risk mixing drinking with driving. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the consequences of driving after drinking and the impact it can have. The campaign is being highlighted with two hard-hitting viral videos which will be promoted across West Mercia on social media. As well as targeted campaign activity over the summer months to raise

46

Over the past three years, 122 people have been killed or seriously injured in West Mercia as a result of collisions involving drink or drugs. Of particular concern is those motorists aged between 17 and 30; Approx 45% of drivers involved in collisions causing death or serious injury involving drink or drugs were aged 17-30, of which around 82% were male. The immediate consequences for anyone if they are caught drink driving include a minimum 12 month driving ban, up to 6 months in prison, a fine of up to ÂŁ5,000 and a criminal record. A conviction for drink driving can have a major impact on the future prospects of a young person. For example, it may lead to job loss, significant problems when applying for a job in the future and difficulty travelling abroad.

New drug driving laws brought in three years ago also make it a lot easier for the police to tackle drivers who choose to drive whilst under the influence of drugs, with new drug testing kits in place to detect cannabis and cocaine. The consequences if you are found guilty of a drug driving offence are the same as for drink driving. Vicki Bristow, Communications Manager for the Safer Roads Partnership says: "During the summer months most of us like to enjoy the longer evenings but this often puts people in situations where they may be drinking more than usual. Our campaign aims to highlight the fact that mixing drinking and driving simply isn't worth the risk. Our message is very simple: If you're driving, don't drink any alcohol at all. Alcohol affects everyone very differently and any amount can impair your ability to drive. The only safe option is to avoid alcohol completely if you are driving, as even 'just one drink' could put you over the limit."

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

The campaign coincides with the launch on 1st June of the summer drink drive campaign by the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) which all police forces across the UK are asked to support. ********

Volunteering For All

N

ational Volunteers’ Week (1st to 7th June 2018) is a time for us to say “thank you” for the fantastic contribution that our volunteers make. This year, Volunteers’ Week is about volunteering for all – celebrating the huge range of people who give their time in so many ways; recognising their invaluable and diverse contribution to the local community. On Sunday 3rd June, we are holding an Open Office Event in Pershore to celebrate volunteering and thank our team – including two cyclists returning from an 80-mile ride, and celebrating the completion of a sponsored walk. Come and join us to find out more – and eat CAKE! - 3pm to 5pm. Pershore Volunteer Centre offers a personalised recruitment service for people looking for volunteering roles, matching them with charities who register with us to promote their volunteer opportunities. A high proportion of volunteers who contact us do go on to volunteer in local charities or national organisations with clients in Pershore or the surrounding villages.

As well as volunteers that we place with other charities, 80 volunteers are helping to run the Volunteer Centre and deliver our services: Trustees, Company Secretary, Receptionists, Community Car Scheme Coordinators, Events Manager, Administrators, Car Drivers, Lunch Club Cooks & Helpers, Minibus Drivers, Minibus Escorts, Website Designers, Newsletter Editor, Resource Centre, It’s human nature to feel good after helping someone out. Volunteers report that volunteering helps them to gain valuable new skills and experiences, boosts their confidence and improve their wellbeing too. Contact Pershore Volunteer Centre on
