Winter is well and truly with us, and gardens generally are lookings a bit bleak. If you want some ideas on how to brighten your's up, have a look at Foliation's article on page 24, which has plenty of hints and tips on how to get a bit of colour and movement back into your garden. A few months ago we introduced a Clubs & Groups page in one of our other publications, which has proved to be extremely popular. So popular that we would like to do the same in The Grapevine., so if you have a group, club or organisation you like listed, please email me the details: name and contact number or email address. Don’t forget to keep your copy of The Grapevine for two months until the next one comes through your door at the end of March. Until next time, keep happy and healthy.

The clinic was recently set up by Claire Parker who is a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist and experienced Acupuncturist. I have over 12 years’ experience as a Physiotherapist and have worked in both the NHS and private sectors. I continue to work for the NHS part-time as a Spinal Orthopaedic Practitioner at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. My areas of expertise are back pain, sports injuries and musculoskeletal conditions. I also have a clinical interest in Vestibular Rehabilitation and have completed advanced training to assess and rehabilitate people with dizziness and balance disorders. I completed my Masters in Acupuncture in 2017, achieving a distinction and winning the U.K. prize with the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ATCM). I decided to train as an Acupuncturist after seeing the physical and psychological benefits of acupuncture when treating pain conditions with physiotherapy patients for over 12 years. The aim of the clinic is to provide the highest standard of physiotherapy or acupuncture treatment, in a caring and professional environment, resulting in positive steps towards your recovery and good health. I provide an individually tailored treatment plan and address the underlying cause of your complaint if possible.

Some of the most common conditions and injuries I treat are neck and back pain, osteoarthritis, shoulder impingement, sports injuries, tendonitis, repetitive strain, postural problems and dizziness. I also offer post-operative rehabilitation and much more. Acupuncture can be effective in treating pain conditions, digestive disorders, nausea, chemotherapy and radiotherapy reactions and much more. I am also recognised by most healthcare providers. I am looking forward to publishing informative articles in The Grapevine over the coming editions.

HEALTHY HAIR STARTS WITHIN...

At Sweeney Todd, we pride ourselves on our knowledge and passion for hair. We truly believe the hair is a reflection of your scalp, and your health. Since re-opening our salon in Pershore, we have been overwhelmed with the influx of new and old clients. We have been well supported and now that Christmas is behind us, it’s a great opportunity to let you know what’s going on.

Sue McLaughlin, hair specialist and salon owner, recommends a microscopic hair test which can give a wealth of information regarding your overall well-being. A comprehensive report is compiled, detailing what foods are affecting you, and any deficiencies or underlying issues of concern.

We have new beauty packages for those wanting a pamper.

Sue recommends completing her 3-month ‘detox, build and nurture’ programme following the report and offers a consultation to guide you through the process.

We have a new team member joining us, who is offering conditioning treatments personal to you.

Hair testing prices start at £99.50 or £129.50 to include kinesiology session.

Each client receives complimentary samples to use at home, to be able to feel and see the difference our high quality products can make to your hair. We encourage you to try this offer as it will help break the cycle of washing your hair daily, as so many do. If you’d like to pass this on as a gift to a friend or loved one, then we also have gift vouchers available to put their way . . . it’s all about spreading the word. Begin our 3-step programme with your next hair appointment: Step 1: Free blow-dry and treatment, plus home care.

hair

Step 2: 50% off your first cut and finish. Step 3: £20 off your first colour or £10 off your second cut and finish.

HAIR HEALTH TESTING The symptoms of hormonal imbalance can often show on the skin, especially the scalp, resulting in embarrassing dry, itchy, red scaly patches and/or thinning hair.

Florida A senior citizen drove his brand new Corvette

convertible out of the dealership. Taking off down the road, he pushed it to 80 mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left. "Amazing," he thought as he flew down the freeway, pushing the pedal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a State Trooper, blue lights flashing and siren blaring. He floored it to 100 mph, then 110, then 120. Suddenly he thought, "What am I doing? I'm too old for this!" and pulled over. Pulling in behind him, the trooper got out of his vehicle and walked up to the Corvette. He looked at his watch, then said, "Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me a new reason for speeding - a reason I've never before heard - I'll let you go." The old gentleman paused then said: "Three years ago, my wife ran off with a Florida State Trooper. I thought you were bringing her back. "Have a good day, Sir," replied the trooper.

Louisiana A senior citizen in Louisiana was overheard

saying, "When the end of the world comes, I hope to be in Louisiana ." When asked why, he replied, "I'd rather be in Louisiana because everythang happens in Louisiana 20 years later than in the rest of the world."

North Carolina A man in North Carolina had a flat tire, pulled off on the side of the road, and proceeded to put a bouquet of flowers in front of the car and one behind it. Then he got back in the car to wait.

A passerby studied the scene as he drove by, and was so curious he turned around and went back. He asked the fellow what the problem was. The man replied, "I got a flat tahr." The passerby asked, "But what's with the flowers?" The man responded, "When you break down they tell you to put flares in the front and flares in the back. I never did understand it neither."

Safari Park’s Students are . . . Top of The Class! Education Manager, Nicola Anslow, said, “We are delighted with the excellent results achieved by all of our Animal Care and Animal Management students this year. It is a testament to the dedication of the Park’s Education team and the hard work put in by our students.

S

tudents attending West Midland Safari Park’s Animal Courses have had a great start to the year, with some excellent exam results and exceeding the national pass rate. The Park’s Education team currently run three accredited courses, from levels one to three, in their Safari Academy - a state-of-the-art, purposebuilt education centre, which opened in May 2017. The courses are run in conjunction with Kidderminster College, part of Birmingham Metropolitan College (BMET). Students managed to exceed the national level for a ‘pass’, achieving a high number of merits and distinctions for; Level 2 Technical Certificate in Animal Care, Level 3 Advanced Technical in Animal Management and Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Animal Management. The Grapevine

“To have results that are above the national average for both year groups in level 3, and to have obtained our best ever results for level 2 in the same year, is fantastic. We are very proud that we are able to go some way to inspiring the next level of conservationists.”

Students study at the Park from one to four years dependent upon the course. The courses are run in partnership with Kidderminster College and BMET who complete the programme of study with extra English, maths, digital skills and pastoral care. For those interested in studying an animal related course from Level 1 upwards, they can contact the Safari Park Education Team on 01299 404888 or by email: animal.care@ wmsp.co.uk.

The courses are planned annually by Course Co-ordinator Ali Burton. She said, "We are so proud of the young adults that our students are becoming. We hope that many of them will go on to make valuable contributions in the industry or pursue their goals of moving on to university."

West Midland Safari Park is currently open on weekends only for Wild Winter Safari until 10 Feb 2019. The Park opens daily from 16 Feb 2019. Winter admission is £20.00 for adults, £15.00 for children aged 3-15 years and £18.00 for concessions. Admission includes a Free Return Ticket. The Adventure Theme Park is closed during the winter season.

Following the results, the students will now decide to either continue their education at the Safari Park and advance to the next level, or leave the Safari Academy to go to university or find a work alternative.

Further information and tickets are available from the Park’s website www. wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114. Find out more on the Safari Park’s official Facebook page: www. facebook.com/WestMidSafari. 15

Local Dog Lovers’ Solution to Modern Day Loneliness

V

olunteer dog cuddling is being offered by Barking Mad – East Worcester as an antidote to the problem of loneliness in modern society. For those who are retired or work from home and are spending large chunks of time alone, caring for a waggy-tailed companion on a temporary basis and meeting other likeminded dog lovers could really help to overcome feelings of isolation. The perception of loneliness as mainly an issue for the older generation is now proving inaccurate, as a study from the Office for National Statistics suggests that young adults are more likely to feel lonely than older age groups. Due to huge advances in technology, the number of freelancers and remote workers is rising, with an article in Business Leader claiming that a ‘third of business owners think that workforce will work remotely by 2020.’ Sheila Hughes of Barking Mad – East Worcester, said, “Whilst remote working has obvious advantages, working alone under pressure and not having the physical presence of a team to support you can lead to loneliness that can’t be fixed by any kind of app. Caring for a friendly dog not only provides canine cuddles (far better than any virtual hug) but also the motivation to go and take a walk at lunchtime, increasing the likelihood of adhering to New Year fitness resolutions.” The community of Barking Mad host families mainly consists of active retired people and those who either work from home, or have extended periods away from work. It offers the opportunity to care for dogs in your own home, while their

owners are away on holiday. Hosts experience all the benefits of dog companionship without any of the emotional or financial responsibilities of fulltime pet ownership. To find out more about becoming a Barking Mad host, you can call Sheila Hughes on 01905 700722 or visit www.barkingmad.uk.com/local/worcester/ east-worcester.

Time For Tea T

he story of tea begins in China. According to a legend, in 2737 BC the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung was sitting under a Camellia sinensis tree while his servant boiled drinking water when some leaves from the tree blew into the water. Shen Nung decided to try the infusion his servant had accidentally created and the result was what we now call tea. Containers for tea have been found in tombs dating from the Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD. It was under the Tang dynasty 618 – 906 AD that tea became established as the national drink of China. During the eighth century, a writer called Lu Yu wrote the first book about tea, the Ch’a Ching or Tea Classic. Shortly after this, tea was introduced to Japan by Buddhist monks who had travelled to

China to study. It soon became a vital part of Japanese life with the development of the Tea Ceremony. It wasn’t until the end of the 16th century that there is any mention of tea drinking amongst Europeans – and these were mainly Portuguese who were living in the East as traders and missionaries. However it was the Dutch who brought the first consignment to Europe from China via their trading post on the island of Java. It soon became popular in Holland. The first mention of tea in England is in a London newspaper called ‘Mercurius Politicus’ in September 1658. It announced that ‘China Drink, called by the Chinese Tcha, by other nations Tay, alias Tee’ was on sale at a coffee house in Sweeting’s Rents in the city. It was the marriage of Charles II to Portuguese princess

Catherine of Braganza - a tea addict - that led to its growing popularity here. However, it was only available to wealthy people as a result of the heavy taxes introduced in 1689. This led to smuggling and adulteration of the smuggled tea which was not quality controlled through customs and excise. Anything from sheep dung to poisonous copper carbonate could be added to it. The slashing of taxation brought an end to smuggling. Taxation on tea finally ended in 1964. The East India Company encouraged increased cultivation of tea in India from the 1830s. In 1858, the British government took over direct control of India. By 1888, tea imports from India were for the first time greater than those from China.

Happy New Year . . . Can you give a cat a happy new start?

T

here are many cats of all ages, colours, and characters at Avon Cat Rescue, all hoping for a new home this year. These cats are warm and cosy, and very well cared for at the rescue centre, but they are all in need of new home where they can start a new life. If you are considering giving a cat a new home, then please contact the rescue centre. As a volunteer at Avon Cat Rescue and getting to know all the cats, I am keen to highlight Emmie's need for a new home. The reason Emmie has been chosen for this article is that she the rescue's longest stay cat and is very much in need of a new start. This is her story. Emmie was found wandering the streets of Warwick and no one knows for how long she had been homeless, struggling to find food and shelter. Thankfully a member of the public handed her in to Avon Cat Rescue. As she was handed in as a stray there is no previous history about her. What is known however, is how well she is now. You can see from the photo, what good care she has received. She has been treated for fleas, sore feet and poor condition. She is estimated to be about 9 years old and since

20

she has been at the rescue she has been micro-chipped and vaccinated. Emmie has been at the centre for over 12 months, longer than any of the present cats, and it is very difficult to understand why she has been overlooked. She is a pretty tortoiseshell cat, very friendly, likes a fuss and enjoys her food very much. There is a short video on the Avon Cat Rescue facebook page (avon-catrescue) where Emmie shows this off well, please take a look at her video to see her purrsonality and enjoy seeing clips of the other residents too. Do you have room for Emmie in your home? She would benefit from a permanent new home as soon as possible: she needs a home that has a calm atmosphere, where she can relax and settle into a new life. Emmie likes to have her own space and needs a home with a garden. As with all cats, given regular food, warmth and shelter, Emmie will repay you with affection and companionship. Although Emmie has had veterinary treatment,

a set adoption fee is not requested, but a donation towards all the cats care at the rescue is appreciated and gratefully received. Please consider adopting Emmie or one of the other cats at Avon Cat Rescue as a companion for the new year. Phone 01789 750235 to make an appointment for viewing or email to enquires @avoncatrescue.org.uk, for other information please go to www. avoncatrescue.org.uk Everyone, especially Emmie and the other cats at Avon Cat Rescue are looking forward to hearing from you.

Head to The Cloud for a more Efficient Business

I

s your business in the cloud – or are you still in the dark about how cloud accounting can help your company, however large or small, run more efficiently?

• Streamlined processes – cloud accounting cuts down input time and possible duplication of work, leaving your team free to work on other tasks;

The important thing to remember as we begin our journey through cloud accounting is that it has benefits far beyond the rolling out of the longawaited Making Tax Digital programme in the spring and owners should be seriously considering the switch to gain an edge over their competitors.

• Flexibility – the ability to scale up cloud-based software and introduce compatible applications is a real bonus for businesses whose requirements change as they grow;

Let’s start our easy to understand and jargon-free series with the answers to some key questions:

What is cloud accounting? ‘The cloud’ refers to software which can be accessed via the internet to store, manage and process data. Users can access the service via an internet connection and from any compatible device including tablets and mobile phones.

What are the advantages? • More effective financial reporting – the use of management reports and forecasting results in better financial management; • Security – storing and accessing data in the cloud reduces the risk of it being lost through stolen or malfunctioning hardware; • Reduced overheads – cloud-based software is more cost effective to use as you don’t need a server or stand-alone software;

• Accessibility – users can access data remotely wherever they are located and multiple users can access the system at the same time; • Automatic software updates – suppliers maintain the system and introduce updates to improve functionality, including security updates. To find out more about how an integrated cloud accounting system can help your business, get in touch with our experienced and knowledgeable team via the contact details below. around, coloured windmills, certain plants that move in the wind such as bamboo. These can all bring interesting aspects to an otherwise dull winter garden.

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Colour & Movement in the Garden

N

ow that the winter is really hitting it is always nice getting some colour into your garden and also some movement. A bit of movement and the odd bits of colour are really good at this time of year. For colour you will be looking at winter stemmed plants, such as the colour stemmed dogwoods in the genus Cornus. Cornus varieties come in a range of colours from lime

24

yellows to fiery oranges and reds. You can also enhance the winter garden by adding interesting leaf shapes, such as Phormium tenax (New Zealand Flax). These structural plants have very interesting, large, strap-like leaves that come in deep reddish/purples through to whites and creams. Getting movement into a garden can be achieved with very little effort. For example: weather vanes moving

Sound is another important element to consider in the winter landscape. Water features are usually turned off at this time of year and wildlife has diminished in numbers and may be in hibernation. Having wind chimes can be used to add some sound and is also interesting as a feature to look out onto from a window. When placing chimes or bird feeders think about where you will best be able to view them from inside the house. Wildlife is of course still with us through the winter months, and the birds in the winter are a very important feature of the garden, catching the eye as they flit ‘to and fro’. I feel a garden is not complete without the wistful, melancholic song of the robin, piercing a bright frosty morning. This is the time of year to feed them, but also to encourage them into the garden by providing plants that offer habitat and food. Pyracantha (Firethorn) is an excellent winter shrub for this purpose. Its barrier of thorns offers a

safe refuge for our feathered friends from the winter elements and predators, but it also gives them a food source in the form of bright red or orange berries. If you grow shrubs and trees with winter berries, you may be lucky enough to have winter visitors such as Redwings drop in; these are a species of bird that journey in flocks all the way from Scandinavia to spend the winter here in the UK. They are beautiful birds, about the size of a blackbird, with various tones of brown plumage. You will see bright flashes of red on their underwings as they fly to and from your garden. If you are putting up a new bird feeder try and site it close to dense shrubs and cover, so the birds have a natural place to hide from predators. They will be more confident using it and you can gradually move the feeder closer to the house as they become used to it, you can even get them right up to the window. Put out a variety of foods to attract different

bird species. Mealworms for the robins, suet for the woodpeckers, thistle seed for the goldfinches and peanuts for the blue tits. Best of all have a varied garden: gardens in themselves feed, nourish and house wildlife. It is also a good time of year to clean out old nest boxes, but pop them back up straight away as it has been found by the British Trust for Ornithology that many birds prefer roosting in boxes and cavities in gardens on cold winter nights. Wrens and house sparrows will fluff up their feathers and bed down together, whereas blue tits are more solitary sleepers. Colour is often lacking from the garden in winter and you can add some back in a couple of ways. It is a good idea to photograph your garden throughout the year. You can then pick places for planting in the summer where you know you will need the colour in the winter. One way to add colour is to plant up duller areas, for

example under trees, with spring bulbs. This seems to have gone out of fashion in recent years, but planting up areas in October with spring bulbs can result in a succession of colour from late January through to April. Snowdrops, Chionodoxa, Aconites and Crocus all provide bright colour very early in the year. This is also a good time to paint fences, especially as the shrubs and herbaceous perennials have by now been pruned back away from fences. There is a wide selection of coloured wood preservatives now available. You can now get some very good quality plastic garden mirrors. You can use these to reflect light into other areas of the garden. You can also use them to brighten up duller areas; this is one of my top tips for the winter garden. If you combine them with art work, such as a statue or iron work, they have a very desirable effect.

Pyracantha Firethorn W

hen my husband Michael, and I moved house, we noticed what we thought was an evergreen climbing plant scaling our neighbour's fence. It had long thorns and I thought I had seen similar before, so we looked in our flower and plant dictionary to find out what it was, but there were too many evergreens so we gave up.

round interest and colour to your garden. The dark glossy foliage of Pyracantha makes a lovely backdrop for its lightly fragrant, small white flowers in late spring. Knowing this we couldn't wait for Autumn.

When the month of May arrived, what a glorious surprise we had. The climber was covered in masses of beautiful white blossom, and the bees and insects loved it. Each morning when we left our bungalow we could hear the bees buzzing away, working hard, collecting pollen. The flowers lasted for around two months, and then as suddenly as they came, they died back. Our thoughts were: that was that.

The dictionary described the Pyracantha as RHS AGM Firethorn, and what came next was literally fantastic. In October the plant was aglow with shiny orangered berries that would provide valuable winter food for wild birds, but at first none came near. Then one morning in November blackbirds, finches, jays, woodpeckers, sparrows and even the robins, came for a feed. What a beautiful sight, but what amused us most was to see the crazed antics of the birds fighting for the berries.

After searching through my plant dictionary a second time, we recognised that the plant was a Pyracantha, and was described as a tough and resilient evergreen shrub that is perfect for adding all year

One other thing that intrigued us, was that another neighbour had a dark red-berried Pyracantha and it was heaving with fruit. By the end of the week the orange-berried Pyracantha had been almost

The Grapevine

stripped bare, but the red berried bush hadn't been touched. We wondered why and kept watch, and then half way through December, after a very bad frost the birds went on the attack again, and this time they fed wildly on the red berries. The Pyracantha is an unfussy, dependable, versatile, hardy shrub and makes a fabulous, low maintenance specimen for growing against walls and fences, and can grow very quickly up to 2.7m. The stems are strong and thorny and it makes an effective barrier against intruders. But beware, although the birds love Pyracantha berries, they are mildly poisonous as their seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides and can cause mild gastro-intestinal problems when eaten raw in large quantities. They are edible only when crushed and washed under running water, and can be made into jelly, which I have yet to try. article & photos by Pamela Green

SAFER INTERNET DAY 2019 Safer Internet Day 2019 will be celebrated globally on Tuesday 5th February 2019 with the slogan: Together for a better internet

S

afer Internet Day is celebrated globally in February each year to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people and inspire a national conversation.

Internet Dating? #BeCyberSmart Don't let your heart rule your head. Stop and think before you fall head over heels. • How well do you really know the person you are forming a relationship with? • Are they who they say they are? • Are they really looking for love or do they have pound signs in their eyes? • Are the pictures they send you believable? • Are they asking you lots of questions but keeping tight-lipped about themselves? • Have they quickly started using pet names or endearing terms? • Do they want to swiftly move their communication with you away from the website or chat room and instead to instant messaging and text messages? • Are they asking for money? Don't fall for 'hard luck' stories. • What are your instincts telling you? Does this person seem too good to be true? • Don't reveal too much information about yourself. • Never give money, credit card or online account details to anyone you do not know or trust. Think about your safety if you meet in person. Stay in a public place, don't get a lift with them, tell someone where you are going, keep your phone with you, don't leave your possessions or drink unattended and do not drink too much.

Can you #MakeTheRightCall? Can you make decisions under pressure? Do you know what is and isn't a police matter? Try our new game to put yourself in our control room. The game has been launched today on social media to give you an idea of the daily pressures on our control room and encourage our communities to #MakeTheRightCall The game uses examples of genuine 999 and 101 calls received by police which players must decide how to respond to against the clock. The options are to deploy officers, resolve over the phone, refer to a partner agency or take no action. To make it as realistic as possible, players have a limited number of officers to deploy but can 'win' more time by making the right decisions. Some of the real life examples used are also not an emergency or a police matter - including asking for a lift, complaining about a banana-stealing housemate and a restaurant bill being too high. Chief Inspector Gareth Morgan, who is head of the force's control room, said: "We hope this game will be an interactive way for people to get an appreciation of how fast-paced our control room is and the daily pressures our staff and officers are under. "The choices we make are not always easy but we make decisions based on the risk to the public. Every unnecessary call we receive places significant pressure on our resources and could lead to someone not getting the help they genuinely need. We hope people will enjoy playing the game and at the same time recognise when it's appropriate to dial 999, what is and isn't a police matter and which issues should be directed to our partners."

10 Tips To Help You Get Back In Shape

I

t’s February, the long month of January is behind us, we may have managed to stay on track with our healthy lifestyle and fitness regime – or we may have fallen off track! I’m not really a believer in Valentines, just another money making marketing day! Who said romance was dead? But, if you are going to treat a loved one this Valentines, make it something healthy, use it as a way to get yourself back on track and refocused. I’ve got 10 tips to help you get back in shape and stay that way for many anniversaries to come. Partner up with your loved one and motivate each other As the adage says, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” So plan your

entertainment, meals, and workouts as a couple and motivate each other when you’re having a tough or lazy day. Take a picture Regularly take progress pictures of yourself, in your underwear for you to monitor how much your body shape is changing since implementing your healthy lifestyle. “A picture paints a thousand words” – so use the photo as a tool to monitor your progress. It’s hard for us to see on a daily basis just how much we’re changing, the photo will do that for you. Take a photo on a weekly basis, at the same time of day each week, in your underwear, front, back and side profile – you’ll be amazed at the results and it will help motivate you. Set specific, realistic goals and have a set time period Then identify and eliminate your barriers to exercise and eating well. With an easy-to-accomplish plan, you’ll even be able to exceed your goals. Plus, you will have to answer to your partner! Try something new Never took a spin or Pilates class? How about partner yoga? Never gone cross-country skiing or hiking? What are you waiting for? Surprise your body and learn something new together to keep things fun and your fitness on track.

Cut workout time in half Don’t waste time standing still and doing biceps curls! Multi-task instead by combing arm, leg, and abdominal exercises, like a curl, lunge, and twist. Then add a cardio interval. Multitasking workouts cut time while boosting metabolism, heart rate, and perspiration. Eat more Think of food as fuel, not as a gift, which means passing on food that’s high in fat and sugar, and taking just half of the portion you’d normally heap on your plate. Also, increase your veg intake, snack on fruit and veg rather than higher calorie snacks such as crisps, biscuits and chocolates. Put one trainer in front of the other The hardest part of a workout is putting your trainers on. Many of us waste too much time saying we need to work out, dreading the process all the while. Trick yourselves by just getting dressed for it, putting on your favourite workout music, and not really thinking about what you’re about to do. If you take it one step at a time, before you know it, you’ll finish the cool-down and feel amazing. Too cold to go outside? The chilly weather and lack of daylight make this time of year tough on fitness resolutions. Heat yourselves up with a healthy slow-cooked meal and break a sweat inside with a new fitness DVD or a fitness channel on YouTube. There are loads of workouts that both men and women can enjoy together.

influencers – just be mindful of the morons trying to sell you unnecessary supplements and products! Reward yourself When you stick to these resolutions reward yourself with something free or inexpensive that makes you both happy and inspires you to look and feel good. Maybe it’s a combined personal training session for you and your partner or a mini fitness/ spa retreat together. For more information on the services we provide, or if you’d like to take part in our next 6 week transformation, then please take a look at our website www.almfitness.co.uk or email amy@ almfitness.co.uk and I’ll be more than happy to help.

Helping both men and women deal with the trauma of a relationship that has irretrievably broken down. By Malvern Branch Co-ordinator: Gill Owen I got involved with Divorce Recovery Workshop (DRW) 8 years ago when a friend who had been on the course found it so inspirational she wanted to set up a local branch in Malvern, which is the only branch in Worcestershire. The workshops are run by experienced volunteers who have all been through the breakdown of a long term relationship and attended the workshops. Although my own divorce was a long time ago, I had to attend the workshops before becoming a facilitator. I was amazed to discover just how many emotions I had buried. Once I had completed the workshop I knew I had come to terms with my past and could let it go. When you go through a breakup you don’t always realise how much grief, resentment and anger you hold on to or how emotionally and physically exhausting it can be. How can Divorce Recovery Workshop help? The breakdown of a long term relationship is a form of bereavement; yet unlike the death of a partner, you are often expected to carry on as normal. Whilst friends and family can be supportive, they don’t always understand how you feel and even your best friend will eventually have had enough of you going over and over what has happened! Anyone who has been through the heartache of an irretrievable breakup is welcome at DRW, even if you are going through the divorce or if it was years ago. DRW will help

you cope with the many different emotions: shock, disbelief, rejection, anger, bitterness and guilt. You will gain a better understanding of what you are going through and be offered strategies to help you cope. What actually happens at a workshop? The course consists of six sessions covering: • Is this really happening to me? • Coping with your 'Ex' • Assuming new responsibilities • Letting go and forgiveness • Family matters • Thinking about new relationships Participants watch a DVD on each topic and then divide into small groups with 2 facilitators per group. Everything said in the group is strictly confidential and no one is pressured to talk if they don’t want to. When is the next one taking place? The next DRW course will run on 3 consecutive Saturdays: 23rd and 30th March, and 6th April 2019: 2 sessions per day with lunch in between. Is there a charge for the Workshop and where does it take place? DRW is a non-profit making registered charity but to cover our running costs we ask participants to pay £60 for the entire course. The venue is in Churchdown Road, Malvern and there is a free car park.

Birds in a Bear Market T

anti-squirrel feeders I’ve ever found. And so the mystery continued.

For small birds the search for food, even in a mild winter, is urgent. A Blue Tit for example, weighing approximately 11g needs 1kcal per gram of body weight a day during winter, which is roughly the same as 300 insects. So it isn’t surprising that small birds will spend most of the available daylight hours foraging for food. Not surprising either, that garden feeders are so popular; they save both time and energy for a bird that is short on one and needs to conserve the other.

We have no bears on the Malverns, which leaves only one explanation to my vanishing bird food: a lesson on where the birds like to feed, and it’s not necessarily where you think.

he celebrations are over and we are all well and truly settled into the New Year. For most of us the Christmas/New Year turmoil is an annual highlight when everyday life is abnormal for a few days, although some of us are relieved when the frenzy in which every year ends dies and sanity once more prevails. For wildlife though Christmas is much the same as any winter day. Dawn is late, darkness falls early and in the few daylight hours in between, for those not hibernating, its a constant hunt for food.

A friend living in North Virginia, close to Middleburg, has had a similar mystery this autumn and winter. Like me, she was going through huge amounts of bird food and couldn’t understand why, until one morning she discovered an ominous footprint in the wet ground beneath the feeders: bear. She went straight to her neighbours to tell them what she had found. Oh, they said, we thought you knew. The bear comes early every morning and taps the feeders to get the food out before eating it.

article & photos by Geraldine Woods-Humphrey

Long winter nights have a profound effect on smaller birds. Blue and Great Tits are around 5% lighter at dawn than they were going to roost the night before. During cold periods this weight loss is even greater and explains why the tiny wren is particularly hard hit in prolonged, very cold winters. This year I’ve spread my feeders about more. Some I’ve hung from trees, others from the feeding stations. Apart from giving me more exercise I’ve noticed that some of the feeders are emptied incredibly quickly. This has been a puzzle particularly as they are filled with the same foods: sunflower hearts and suet pellets. Squirrels, you all cry, but this is not the case. I’ve watched the feeders and although the squirrels have been about, they’ve given up trying to get past the best The Grapevine

ADVICE

A

s we welcome in the New Year after the festive period we begin to make plans for the year ahead. Many of our pets will have joined in the Christmas activities and may well have put on a kilogram or two after a few extra Christmas treats! Now is a good time to think about our pet’s weight with regards to their health, and to get an accurate weight for them, so that if we need to consider changing our routine with regards to exercise, feeding and treats, then we can discuss together the best way forward to help make our pets as healthy and happy as possible. At the surgery we have accurate weighing scales for dogs, cats and small pets of all shapes and sizes, including scales which are set out on the table and walk on scales for our larger canine friends. Why not bring your pet into the surgery to see one of our helpful nurses or vets for a weight check?

pet’s health some of which include: • • • • • •

Osteoarthritis Exercise intolerance Diabetes High blood pressure Difficulty breathing Cancer

If you know your pet is overweight here are some helpful hints when it comes to helping them to shed a few pounds: • Cut down the number of treats given per day • Change the type of treat you give your pet – some can be surprisingly calorific! • Treats such as carrot sticks can be great for dental health as well as weight loss • Speak to one of our vets about

how much food you should be feeding • Consider changing onto a weight loss metabolic diet • Playing with your pet more frequently will not only give them mental stimulation but also help them to lose weight • Only offer food for a certain period of time at regular intervals - not free choice feeding Alternatively if you have any queries you can call into the surgery or phone us to discuss any of your questions in more detail. We wish all of our clients a very happy, prosperous New Year and look forward to seeing you and your pets soon!

It is also important to assess the weight of our larger pets and tools such as weigh tapes are able to provide a good estimate of weight if used properly in horses and ponies. Obesity in animals can have several negative effects on our The Grapevine

Pick Up Your Pen! O

ur writing competition for this month has a Valentine’s Day theme. Even if you’ve not written anything since you were at school, be brave and pick up your pen. You really have got nothing to lose – and you may be one our winners. Think about what the day means to you – is it romantic or is it just a commercial rip-off with overpriced cards and flowers? Did you ever send or receive a Valentine card? Did you get married on Valentine’s Day? See what you can do with one of these ideas: • Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? • Did you ever go on a blind date? If so, what happened? • Did you ever fancy someone

but not have the courage to send them a card? • What was the most unusual thing that happened to you on Valentine’s Day? Use the senses as much as you can. Colours, sounds, smells and textures all help to bring a story to life for the reader. The good news is that you only need to write a maximum of 250 words (3 short paragraphs). Don’t worry about getting it in the right order to start with. Just

get the ideas onto the paper and tidy it up later. Reward yourself for trying – and do send me the story. I love reading the stories I receive and wish we could publish them all. Send your entries to me at sue.r.johnson@ outlook.com by Wednesday 2nd March. I will award a small prize to the winning entry. Sue Johnson www.writers-toolkit.co.uk Congratulations to Rosemary Prosser who is our winner this month. A small prize is on its way to her.

The Reluctant Angel by Rosemary Prosser

A

lice was a quiet little girl preferring her older brother Tommy to do all the talking. Not long after Alice’s third birthday Tommy and some of his friends started attending Sunday School in the village. Tommy enjoyed the organised activities and Alice was soon invited to go along with him. After initial reluctance, she started attending regularly. With Christmas approaching preparations started being made for the Nativity Play. Alice had

The Grapevine

made one special friend Toby, and they were both cast as angels. Tommy was to be a shepherd. Mum started to organise costumes for them. A colourful tunic made out of an old curtain, and a bright tea towel headdress secured by an elasticated belt for the shepherd. A pretty dress, fashioned out of white netting and with a tinsel halo for the angel. Excitement grew with weekly rehearsals and Alice became very familiar with the Nativity story. Suddenly she announced that she no longer wanted to be in the

play and moreover she didn’t want to go to Sunday School any more. Persuasion and coaxing couldn’t change her mind. No explanation could be found for her change of heart. Her decision was accepted. On the day of the performance, she happily went along with her Mum to watch in wide eyed wonder as the other children played their parts. She saw Toby, standing proud as an angel. Then Alice leant up and whispered in her mother’s ear ‘So you don’t have to be dead then to be an angel’.

Saint Peter is seeing all of the new arrivals trying to go through the Pearly Gates into Heaven. The first applicant of the day explains that his last day was not a good one. "I came home early and found my wife lying naked in bed. She claimed she had just gotten out of the shower. Well, her hair was dry and I checked the shower and it was completely dry too so I knew she was up to some hanky-panky. I began to look for her lover. I went onto the balcony of our 9th-floor apartment and found the guy clinging to the rail by his fingertips. I was so angry that I began bashing his fingers with a flower pot. He let go and fell, but his fall was broken by some awnings and bushes. On seeing he was still alive I found super human strength to drag our antique cedar chest to the balcony and throw it over. It hit the man and killed him. At this point the stress got to me and I suffered a massive heart attack and died." Saint Peter thanked him and sent him on to the waiting room. The second applicant said that his last day was his worst. "I was on the roof of an apartment building working on the AC equipment and I stumbled over my tools and toppled off the building. I managed to grab onto the balcony rail of a 9th-floor apartment but some idiot came rushing out on the balcony and bashed my hands with a flower pot. I fell but hit some awnings and bushes and survived, but as I looked up I saw a huge chest falling toward me. I tried to crawl out of the way but failed and was hit and killed by the chest. ” Saint Peter couldn't help but chuckle as he directed the man to the waiting room. Saint Peter is still giggling when his third customer of the day enters. He apologizes and says "I doubt that your last day was as interesting as the two fellows that arrived here just before you.” "I don't know" replies the man. "Picture this, I'm naked, hiding in this cedar chest…."
