Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy

of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the towns and villages in and around the Evesham

The Worcestershire Grapevine

& Pershore area and manager Paul Papandreou agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

December is of course also the Christmas edition, and this month’s magazine is crammed full of Christmas events, recipes and articles, so there’s something for everyone. Starting with the recipes, this month we’ve given you two - both Christmas pudding recipes – one for those of you who would like an alternative to a traditional “plum” pudding, and a second one to help you use up any leftover Christmas pudding, or even Christmas cake. I hope you enjoy them both – do let me know what you think of them. As always at this time of year, there are lots of charity and fund-raising events, hosted by local schools, churches and community organisations, so do go along and support them – and get your Christmas shopping done at the same time. On a more serious note, Christmas is a time to spend with your family, but there are many people – especially senior citizens – who will spend Christmas alone. Spare a thought for them, and if you can, perhaps contact your local church or Age UK to find out how you can help to make a lonely person’s Christmas a little happier. Animal charities are also super-busy during this time of year, so gifts of pet food or donations are especially welcome. And on that note, I will leave you to enjoy this month’s magazine. Have a wonderful Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.

New Bakery at Pershore Market C

raig Blackman’s passion for baking started during his time spent as a chef. He finetuned his love for patisserie and baking, after a short time spent in Raymond Blancs kitchen. Craig then opened Blackmans Bakery (formerly Grants Bakeries) in 2012, in a small bakery at the back of Grants restaurant on Sheep Street, Stratford–upon-Avon. The business soon out-grew these premises, and he moved to his current bakery on Avenue Field

Industrial Estate, Stratford-uponAvon. Blackmans Bakery produces a wide range of traditional and speciality breads, pastries and cakes, all baked daily using locally sourced ingredients, and supplying a wide range of restaurants, cafes, delis and shops across Warwickshire. Craig’s passion and hard work was recognised when he won the 2013 Pride of Stratford-uponAvon Small Business category.

More recently, when an exciting opportunity became available to open a bakery in Pershore Market, Craig jumped at the chance to expand and get his delicious baked goods into his own bakery shop. The smells of freshly baked bread, tea cakes and lardy cake (to name a few!) fill Pershore Market daily, and Craig is really enjoying getting to know the market customers, whilst baking his delicious cakes, pastries and breads - his tea cakes are becoming a firm favourite! Please pop into the market to meet Craig and his team and try his breads, patisseries and cakes – you’ll be glad you did!

No one should be alone at Christmas

T

he festive season is usually a time for celebration with those you love, but for too many older people it can reinforce feelings of loss, loneliness and of life passing them by.

communities to ensure older people feel valued and included and make the festive season something to look forward to. There are lots of ways that a little time and commitment can make a great difference to older people: • Help to write and send Christmas cards • Ensure they have enough medication for the holiday period • Pop round to have a cup of tea and chat • Offer to help with shopping to ensure they have enough food in store and are able buy presents

Imagine spending Christmas Day completely alone, unable to leave your home and with nothing but your television for company. It’s a depressing thought, but it’s also the stark reality for approximately 1 million older people across the country. People can become socially isolated for a variety of reasons and many older people go for long periods of time without seeing or speaking to anyone.

• Give them a Christmas card and a small present • Invite them to join you at some time over the festive season • You could check with local groups/churches to see if you can help out over the festive season (there may be lunches laid on that need help with cooking and serving or transport). We urge everyone to spare a little time and thought this Christmas for the older people in your community who are spending the festive period alone.

Loneliness is not something that happens just at Christmas. Worst Christmas joke . . . ever!!! There was once a great Tsar in Russia named Rudolph the Red. He stood looking out the windows of his palace one day while his wife, the Tsarina Katerina, sat nearby knitting. He turned to her and said, "Look my dear, it has begun to rain!" Without even looking up from her knitting she replied, "It's too cold to rain. It must be sleeting." The Tsar shook his head and said, "I am the Tsar of all the Russians, and Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear!"

Pantomime T

he roots of pantomime can be found in medieval and Tudor Christmas celebrations. These featured the mummers play based on the story of St George and the Dragon where good triumphed over evil. Another major influence was the continental commedia dell’arte where small theatre companies toured Italy and France telling stories that held lessons for the audience. Each story held stock characters – the innamorati (young lovers), vecchi (old men such as Pantalone) and zanni (servants such as Arlecchino, Columbina, Scaramouche and Pierrot). From this the English Harlequinade developed with the eloping lovers Harlequin and Columbine pursued by the girl’s father Pantaloon and his comic servants Clown and Pierrot. John Rich, the actormanager of Lincolns Inn Theatre (opened in 1714) recognised the potential of the commedia dell’arte characters. His first production of this type was called ‘Harlequin Sorcerer.’ Harlequin was originally armed with a wooden sword or ‘batte’ that alternated between being a weapon and a magic wand. It had a hinged flap which created a loud slapping sound to give a more theatrical effect when used to hit fellow actors - the original ‘slapstick’. These days, a pantomime comic

16

uses the talents of a drummer in the orchestra pit to create the same effect. It was usual for the villain to be the first to enter from the “dark side” – stage left - followed by his adversary the good fairy from stage right. This echoes the tradition in medieval mummers plays when the entrances to heaven and hell were positioned in the same way. Also, in old theatres the baddie usually made his first entrance rising from a trap door on the left of the stage.

made of fur. The French for glass is ‘verre’ whereas luxurious white squirrel fur translates as ‘vair.’ Dan Leno is credited with inventing the character of the Dame as we know her today. An 1861 photograph of him as Widow Twankey shows elements we would recognise – naughty, knowing, queen of misrule.

The traditional plots became mixed up with fairy tales, folk tales and tales from the Arabian Nights. As with the mummers plays and commedia dell’arte they featured strong story lines with good battling evil and emerging triumphant.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, pantomime changed slightly due to the popularity of music hall. Some of these stars took part in pantomimes, incorporating their usual routines into the traditional stories. This trend has continued to the present day with pop stars and TV personalities taking starring roles.

The Cinderella story as we know it was written by Charles Perrault in 1697, based on a traditional folk tale, and originally meant for adults not children. There is thought to be an error of translation and that the glass slipper was originally

It is still considered to be bad luck to perform the whole pantomime without an audience. Usually the actors rehearse everything apart from the last two lines (traditionally a rhyming couplet) – which are then added on the opening night.

Choice Wines: France C

hâteau la Tulipe de la Garde is a muchrespected winery that continues to receive prestigious awards for their wine productions and is situated between Saint-Émilion and the Dordogne River, in the Bordeaux region of France. Dating from the middle of the 14th century, the estate was purchased by Dutch rock star, writer-composer, Ilja Gort, during 1994. Having only a small amount of knowledge about winemaking, but wanting to live in a peaceful environment, Ilja developed the family business and can be justifiably proud of all achievements. Located north-east of Bordeaux, the climate of

this area enjoys a good amount of sunshine and grows numerous grape varietals, with highquality grapes, for producing exceptional wines. Château la Tulipe Bordeaux Supérieur is an excellent blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes. Aged in French oak barrels, this production has an intense red colour. Ripe, dark fruits, are in abundance for the bouquet. The smooth, dry palate sensations follow through, with a most impressive finish, to complete. A very pleasant and popular wine, having a richness to savour. The Company also produces wines under the 'Slurp' label. Slurp Cabernet Syrah Red has Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah grapes utilised to great advantage. Ripe and juicy, this wine has many 'followers', being easy-drinking and with positive flavours. Smooth and popular, this production has a good body and is well-balanced. Slurp Chardonnay also has a good number of 'devotees'. Again, excellent value and enjoyed both on its own and at many dining occasions, this wine will not disappoint, either. A medium-intense, dry, white production, which has a modest floral bouquet, leading to the mouth's pleasures and the palate's appreciated enjoyment. Easy-drinking and pleasing to many wine lovers. For all details, plus availability and very interesting information about this winery and the impressive productions, which accompany a lot of cuisine, wonderfully, please visit: www.tulipe.co.uk www.tulipe.nl www.slurp.nu As always, Enjoy! 12 Tips to Stay in Shape this Christmas

I

t's been said that you can gain over five pounds during the festive season! Of course you should let your hair down and enjoy every moment but rather than overdoing any exercise for the first three months of the year trying to work off the additional calories, instead, focus those three months on sculpting, maintaining or improving what great work you've already achieved in 2017. Use some (or all) of these festive tips to stay in shape this Christmas and you will thank me in the New Year. A healthy lifestyle is an on-going part of your life, not a quick fix that you then destroy over 12 days of the year! 1) Be Prepared This goes for every day of the year in my book but no more so than this time of year. Make sure

20

you eat regular meals, you have healthy snacks to hand, plenty of water and never go to a party or gathering hungry, it's a recipe for overeating disaster! 2) Keep on Moving Just because you have even more tasks to juggle this time of year than you usually do, don't use this as an excuse to become sedentary! If a workout session suffers then, run up every flight of stairs you come across (yes in those heels). Walk, run, skip, jump or dance, anything‌ just move and burn off any additional calories you've consumed. 3) HOW is as important as WHAT There are so many ways to cook and eat foods. Ensure you either use a spray oil or measure with tablespoons, never just pour freely! Do not fry anything; grill, bake, griddle, anything but fry. If you have a steamer then use it for all your veg, if you don't have one

ask for one for Christmas and go into 2018 with a new healthy eating kitchen toy. 4) Choose Wisely When faced with a buffet or table of food that you didn't have a hand in preparing, assess each dish before you choose what to put on your plate. Anything with colour and freshly prepared pile it high. Anything with pastry, sauce, cheese, cream, white refined carbs‌don't deny yourself everything but keep it low. 5) Beware of Alcohol Alcohol contains lots of calories and when you've had one too many, it definitely limits your inhibitions and your nutrition plan goes straight out of the window. A small glass of wine is one of the most diet friendly drinks you could choose, but remember to limit the amount you consume.

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

6) Controlled Contribution If you are going to a dinner party, take a couple of homemade low calorie dishes with you and eat that food only. By doing this you will know what you are eating is calorie controlled, natural & nutritious and you are contributing to the party. 7) You Can Say No You may be one of those sweet people that likes to please everyone (except yourself). Even if you're not, it's important to know that it's ok to say no when being offered something that you know is going to harm your health goals. Everyone else is important but you need to take care of your own needs first. 8) Party Time As this is the party season, a time for enjoyment and letting loose. At every given opportunity I highly recommend that you DANCE like you’ve never danced before because dancing burns over 250 calories an hour.

10) It's All About Balance If you're going out for dinner have a lighter lunch to keep down the calories and enjoy more food in the evening, but NEVER skip breakfast! If you've been out for a meal at lunch, have something lighter in the evening.

and you'll twirl into 2018 with a great start to the year instead of a great amount of body fat on your rear! I’d just like to take this opportunity to thank you all for reading my articles, for your kind words and lovely feedback. Have a wonderful Christmas and a fit and fabulous New Year! I’ll look forward to helping more people change their lives in 2018!

11) Don't Allow Temptation In Unless you're presented with raw vegetables, salad sticks and hummus as an appetizer then say no! Say no to the bread rolls that are brought out or the basket of nachos and crisps, if the rest of your party wants to eat them, make sure they are placed at the opposite end of the table, so there's no temptation in front of you. 12) Care Enough This list is a guide to help you stay healthy, on track and keep the calories low. This aside, relax and enjoy yourself but with love and respect for your beautiful body, eat and drink consciously

For more information, please visit www.almfitness.co.uk or email amy@almfitness.co.uk

9) Take Note It's important that at this time of year you really listen to your body. Some people eat and drink to the point of feeling ill. You need to ensure you keep well hydrated (water) and notice when you're full and then stop eating. The Worcestershire Grapevine

chilly Friday morning was not enough to stop Pershore High School Year 8’s bringing the heat in this year’s District Cross Country Championships. All students that represented the school played a huge part in a successful morning that saw a total of 4 athletes finish in the top ten across the Boys and Girls year 8 category. Stand out performances include; Year 8 girl Lydia Cooper (2nd) (on the right) and Katherine Burgess (3rd) (on the left) in the overall girls race. Pershore teacher Mr Layton-Hill, would like to mention the positive spirit the students bought to the event in the form of cheering each other on, supporting each other before and after the races and even helping injured athletes over the finish line when they were struggling. Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Rose Pruning T

hank you to everyone who emailed and called me over pruning apple trees, which I featured in November’s issue. I am pleased it has pointed you in the right direction. Don’t forget, you have until February for apple trees to be pruned. This is also the same with roses, so do not worry, you have not missed the boat and, as promised, here is some advice.

24

December is now with us, the winter is setting in, and it’s a good time to prune your roses. The aim is to remove damage and reduce height. Roses do not have a great root stock and the winter weather can cause damage with wind rocking the roots. First of all, you are looking to take out what I was taught are the three D’s: dead, diseased or

damage wood (as cleanly as possible). If you’re unsure if the wood is dead a simple way is to gently scratch the bark and if it is not green underneath then it is dead. This method can be followed from the top of a suspected stem all the way down to the base. Once the three D’s are cut out, they and all their leaves should be removed and burnt as they could contain disease such as ‘black spot’ or ‘rust’ that you do not want carrying onto next year’s growth. When pruning a stem cut just above a leaf bud, cutting away from the bud so that any rainwater runs away from the new bud. As a rough guide, a rose needs to be cut back to five buds from where this year’s growth started. It can then be reduced again in March back to the strongest looking bud. Following December’s pruning I would recommend a winter wash spray (a number of products are on the market) to help keep disease down to a minimum.

To advertise call 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

I would not recommend feeding, because if there are a few weeks where the winter weather is good, you don’t want the plant to put on new growth that is then going to be damaged by frosts. However, mulching around the base of the plant with either horse manure or leaf mulch will help to protect the roots. When to spray or not to spray? That is the question. Spraying roses is always best done to prevent diseases. If you have spent all this effort keeping them free of ‘black spot’ etc. then it would be a real shame to lose out through not catching diseases early.

from leaf to leaf or plant to plant. This way the rose can build up its immune system so spray every fourteen days if you can. Next time, to cheer us up from the cold dark winter months, I will look at adding colour into your garden to add interest as well as making your garden seem larger than it really is.

I spray my roses with a rose spray (many on the market) as soon as the buds start to burst - not only the rose but anything within a few feet of the plant as some spores i.e. ‘black spot’ are spread by rain droplets splashing spores If you have an upcoming event please let me know. If you have a problem in the garden then please contact me and I will do my best to answer your questions. o you know anyone who has difficulty accessing public transport? We can help local residents who struggle to walk to a bus or have difficulty because of reduced bus services and who have no access to a car. Registration is free for the Community Transport Scheme and each trip is charged individually at an affordable rate based on mileage. Two young boys walked into a pharmacy one day, picked out a box of tampons and proceeded to the checkout counter. The pharmacist at the counter asked the older boy, "Son, how old are you?” “Eight”, the boy replied. The pharmacist continued, “Do you know what these are used for?” The boy replied, “Not exactly, but they aren't for me. They're for him. He's my brother. He's four." "Oh, really?" the pharmacist replied with a grin. "Yes." the boy said. "We saw on TV that if you use these, you would be able to swim, play tennis and ride a bike. After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, Russian scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 200 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 150 years ago. Not to be outdone by the Russians, in the weeks that followed, an American archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet. Shortly after, the following story was published in the New York Times: "American archaeologists, finding traces of 250-year-old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network 50 years earlier than the Russians". One week later, Wrexham's best selling newspaper The Leader, reported the following: "After digging as deep as 30 feet in his backyard in Rhos, near Wrexham in North Wales, Steve Williams, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing.

Iced Christmas Pudding Mousse This recipe is a great way to use up leftover Christmas pudding, whilst adding a special twist . . .

METHOD To make the pudding yy Blitz together the chopped pudding and custard in a food processor. yy Whip the cream and sugar to soft peaks and stir into the flavoured custard. yy Pour the mix into a 1.2 litre/2 pint pudding basin, then cover and freeze overnight or for several hours. (The pudding can be frozen for up to 1 month.) For the sauce

INGREDIENTS For the pudding 450g Christmas pudding, roughly chopped into small pieces 500g carton ready-made custard 142ml carton double cream 25g caster or icing sugar For the orange sauce 4-6 tangerines or satsumas, peeled 300ml orange juice a splash or two of Grand Marnier or Cointreau (optional) 100g caster sugar To serve holly sprigs icing sugar for dusting Serves 8

36

yy Cut away the pith and peel from the tangerines or satsumas with a sharp knife, then cut either side of the membranes to release the segments. yy Bring the orange juice and caster sugar up to a boil, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved. Then boil hard for 20-25 mins, until reduced by about half to a thick syrupy consistency (like golden syrup). Watch it carefully so it doesn’t boil over, lowering the heat if necessary. yy Leave to cool, finishing with a splash or two of your chosen liqueur, if using. Can be kept chilled for 3-4 days. To serve yy Transfer the pudding to the fridge 30 minutes before serving, then dip the basin into hot water and turn the pudding out onto a chilled plate. yy Arrange some of the fruit segments around the base of the pudding, and some on top. Drizzle with some of the syrup and serve the rest separately. yy Finish the decoration with holly leaves and a dusting of icing sugar.

The Great Safari Bake-Off . . . starring Mrs Claus Mrs Claus said, “I am so excited to get to work in my brand new kitchen that the lovely staff at West Midland Safari Park have worked so hard on - it is fit for Nigella herself! I can’t wait to get baking and for people to come along and taste my delicious mince pies and warm chocolate cookies.”

W

est Midland Safari Park have enlisted a special guest for Christmas this year, in the form of Mrs Claus!

She continued, “Of course I will have lots of elves on hand to help me too. It’s going to be so much fun. The cookies are Santa’s favourite!”

The lovely lady has had her own custom-built kitchen made for her to bake some wonderfully tasty treats; warm chocolate chip cookies, mince pies and hot chocolate will all be on the menu and included in the Santa Safari admission price. She will also be assisted by the Park’s very own group of elves, who will be welcoming guests and ensuring they enjoy their exclusive experience.

Not to be outdone, Santa will have his own fantastic grotto, where guests can be magically transported to the North Pole and pay a visit to the merry man himself. Children will be able to have a memento of their day by taking home a picture of themselves with Santa and a visit to the Elves’ Workshop, where they’ll be able to choose their very own present.

Centred around a ‘gingerbread house’ theme, Mrs Claus has been lucky enough to have her kitchen specially designed by one of the talented artists at the Park, complete with illustrations of cheeky elves, candy canes and mistletoe. Festive treats will be served by Mrs Claus herself, atop beautifully hand-made kitchen furniture.

40

The Park’s elves have also been busy extremely getting everything ready for the festive season, transforming the Discovery Trail into a Winter Wonderland and planting over 350 Christmas trees, complete with a sprinkling of over 1,500 kg of ‘snow’. They have also been perfecting their secret ‘Elf Wave’, which all of the elves have been eagerly practising

ready to show any guests that are cheeky enough to ask them! To ensure the Santa Safari experience is maximised, there will be a Santa Checklist for children to tick off each activity they participate in or see, including a trip to the festive Sea Lion Show and a visit to the Elf Craft Club in the brand new Safari Academy. Santa Safari opens on 11 November for weekends only and then daily from 25 November until Christmas Eve. Admission is £22.00 for adults, £18.00 for children aged 3-15 years, £6.50 for children under the age of three and £20.00 for concessions. Admission includes a voucher for a return ticket or safari gift, and entry to Mrs Claus’ Kitchen. Group and school discounts are also available, and annual pass holders or visitors using their return voucher can upgrade to Santa Safari by booking ahead. The Adventure Theme Park is closed during the winter season. Further information and tickets are available from the office Santa Safari website www.santasafari.co. uk or by telephone 01299 402114. You can find out more on the Safari Park’s official Facebook page: www. facebook.com/WestMidSafari.

Winter’s Promise

I

n the unseasonably warm days of October I witnessed a killing. It was made more brutal and painful to watch because of the fragility and beauty of the victim. A hornet had caught a Red Admiral butterfly. In doing so the hornet answered my question in September: were they after the sugars from the windfall pears, or the butterflies? Watching the struggle between the two insects, my first reaction was to intervene. I didn’t. For what I was witnessing was a natural course of events; the hornet has to live too, it has its place in the order of life. And so I walked away from the grizzly scene not wishing to watch the hornet eat its lunch. Walking out onto the Hills early on the morning of Storm Ophelia I noticed that the sheep in the deer park had corralled themselves into a perfect circle as if they were a wagon train defending themselves

The Worcestershire Grapevine

against attack. Perhaps they knew something the forecasters didn’t and were preparing for Ophelia’s worst. Was this going to be another Michael Fish moment? Thankfully, not here, but others suffered at Ophelia’s hands. Apart from the red sun, caused apparently by dust and debris from wildfires in Iberia and Saharan dust, there was little to get excited about. The storm moved on and in the callous way of extreme weather events, the following day was brilliant and bright, as though nothing had happened. October faded into the mists of November, the red admirals disappeared. With Halloween came shorter days, the winter nights drew in. A time to stay indoors by the fire with a hot drink and crumpets smothered in butter and honey. For some people it’s a time of melancholy, the world seems lifeless, with nothing to look forward to except Christmas. But look closely and the promise of light

and new life is there, ready to be woken, ready to be born. In autumn and winter the cycle of life has begun again for many. The red deer hinds are already carrying their unborn calves. By Christmas the winter solstice has passed and minute by minute the days are lengthening. Before the end of February the vixens will have mated. Grey-green hazel catkins have been waiting since autumn, cer-tain of the warmth and longer days of another Spring. Then they will bloom sending golden clouds of pollen on the wind. And, as if to cheer us all, the robin will sing all through winter, a lone herald before the real dawn chorus begins, when newborn fox cubs will lie safely in their den, and the red deer calves will be taking their first tee-tering steps in a strange new world. BOMBAY SAPPHIRE: The Cocktail Experience

W

henever my husband, Michael, and I visit an area we always look for historic and interesting sites to visit. This was the case when we visited Hampshire. When we first saw the name Bombay Sapphire, we were intrigued to find out more, and were amazed at what we found. Bombay Sapphire is housed in Laverstoke Mill, which is in a conservation area with over 1000 years of history. For 225 years the Victorian and Georgian buildings of Laverstoke Mill, set beside the River Test, produced bank note paper for the Bank of England. The buildings are Grade 11 English Heritage listed, and are recognised as having great historic and architectural merit. They have been restored to their original state but now house a state-of-the-art distillery which produces Bombay Sapphire Gin. Bombay Sapphire Gin is made with a secret recipe which can be traced back as far as 1761. We wanted to know more so took an escorted 15 minute tour around the Distillery. Our guide, Sarah, told us of the twelve botanicals that are suspended in a copper basket above

the spirit. As the heated spirit vapours rise, they are gently infused with all the rich aromatic flavours and this gives the gin it's unique flavour. We laughed when we were introduced to Tom and Mary, the two Carterhead Stills used since 1830, but the company have now added two 12,000 litre copper pot stills. At the end of the tour we were handed a tiny sample. I gingerly sipped the drink and was amazed that there was no bitterness. Sarah, explained that most gin makers boil the botanicals directly in the spirit and this gives an entirely different taste. We were escorted into a bar where we were offered a complementary cocktail, but if driving, we could have a fruit cocktail, and our free miniature sample bottles would be presented before leaving. We sat outside in the sunshine and sipped our delicious fruit cocktails, while admiring the beautiful restored buildings. Most of us will recall stories from around 1825, when British officers stationed in India had to take their daily dose of quinine to keep away malaria. Quinine is very bitter, so they added soda water, sugar, lime, and a tot of gin to make it more palatable. Soon tonic water was invented as a prophylactic against malaria, thus the Gin & Tonic became an essential part of British Colonialism. You can purchase the Hosted Experience and Cocktail Making Course as a gift by going online to www.ditllery. bombaysapphire.com, or by calling 01256 890090. Please note: Laverstoke Mill is a working distillery, so guests wearing open-toed shoes or high heels may be refused entry. This Self-Discovery Experience showcases the very best of Bombay Sapphire gin and the beautiful, historic distillery.

West Mercia Police Drink/Drug Driving Campaign 2017 Don't Drink or use Drugs whilst Driving Campaign 2017 Safer Neighbourhood Teams will be visiting licensed premises to distribute leaflets and posters highlighting the consequences of driving a motor vehicle whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

T

hroughout the festive period and over the new year West Mercia Police will operate the Christmas Don't Drink Drive & Don't Drug Drive Campaign.

Police will be working alongside both our sister organisations, Ambulance and Fire, in the hope of educating and persuading motorists not to drink or drug drive. The consequences of doing so can not only be financially dire to those caught, it can also be very tragic, leaving families with loved ones that are injured or killed as a result of an accident caused by a drink or drug driver. Those that are caught face severe penalties including long driving bans, heavy fines and greatly increased insurance premiums if they get their licence back.

48

Police Officers, including our road policing teams, will also be out and about to stop and interact with the public, and where necessary administer the tests. This is to ensure our roads remain safe over the festive period for the law abiding public.

some of the excellent pubs and restaurants in the towns. However to the few drivers who feel they can get away with drinking or drug driving, especially in rural areas, the police have one clear message: "We will prosecute you if you are caught." Don't have a false sense of security just because you are in a remote location - police will be patrolling right across Herefordshire and Worcestershire to ensure all motorists are abiding by the law. Remember: even one alcoholic drink can impair you ability to drive.

The police urge all those who wish to enjoy a drink to avoid using their vehicles when out enjoying a drink or a meal at

If you suspect a drink or drug driver please do not hesitate to call the police. Please contact police on the nonemergency number 101 or emergency number 999.

Christmas Crime Prevention The Christmas and the New Year season often present an opportunities for criminals to target homes, businesses and individuals, with a wide range of criminal activity. Important things to consider: • Always ensure you secure your home, business or student accommodation before you leave. If you have a burglar alarm, remember to set it when you go out. • It's a good idea to use automatic lights and draw your curtains as the evenings get dark earlier. If you can, keep your valuables and any Christmas presents out of sight. • Be aware of fraud and scams whenever you use your bank cards and credit cards on the internet, in restaurants and bars, and limit your personal information on social media. Remember to keep your cards and their passwords and PIN numbers secure.

• Pickpockets and opportunistic thieves like to target people in shopping centres and busy locations. Make sure that you take precautions at cash machines. Be vigilant regarding your wallet, handbag and mobile phone particularly in cafes, restaurants, when on the street and at transport hubs or on public transport. • When Christmas shopping park your car in a well lit managed area if possible and leave the vehicle secure with no bags, items or valuables on display. • If you are going out celebrating always let someone know where you are going, who you are with and when you might be home. If you change your plans let someone know otherwise they may worry. • Have a plan to get home safe such as pre booking a reputable taxi company or where and when to catch a night bus or train. Remember never to use a minicab off the street as they are illegal and very dangerous.

Birthday gifts that are lasting legacies for the Severn Valley Railway

L

ong-standing Severn Valley Railway member Phil Swallow wanted just one thing for his 60th birthday – to raise money for the future of the Railway he loves so much. He asked friends and family not to buy him birthday presents, but instead to donate to the SVR Charitable Trust’s endowment Future Fund. The response has been impressive, raising more than £5,000. Phil has been a member of the SVR for more than 40 years and is delighted with the outcome: “A large number of people told me they’d no idea what to buy me for a 60th birthday present. However, the SVR is my passion, and I know how important the Charitable Trust’s endowment fund will be to the Railway's long-term security. Put these things together, and asking for donations made perfect sense. What I didn’t expect was the overwhelming generosity of my friends and family. It really has been awe inspiring!” Phil believes he has a good insight into what prompted his friends’ willingness to give so readily:

52

“I think what really appealed to people was the chance to donate to an endowment fund; this really is the gift that keeps on giving. The fact that the Charitable Trust is building up this long-term investment fund for the SVR is what differentiates it from most other heritage railways. It’s a game changer and a genuine investment in the future. It was also very easy to organise. It took five minutes to set up a JustGiving page and all I had to do was send a link to my friends, who very kindly did the rest." The Charitable Trust was able to claim an extra 25% Gift Aid on most of the donations, and this helped boost the total amount. Trust Director Shelagh Paterson said: "We’re delighted at the way in which Phil has galvanised support from his friends and family to boost our endowment fund. The fund balance is now nearly £1.2 million, and it is professionally invested to generate further income. Our aim, over time, is to build up the fund to £10 million. This will generate enough income, year on year, to make a significant impact on the SVR’s future sustainability. It will help

preserve locomotives, carriages, wagons and infrastructure such as bridges, viaducts and station buildings, and it will help fund the training of apprentice heritage engineers. We are very grateful to everyone who has contributed and to Phil for this wonderful idea of ‘alternative birthday presents’!" Phil started as a volunteer at the SVR in 1975, and trained to become a travelling ticket inspector. Over the years, his involvement has grown steadily. He now uses his business experience to advise the Board of Directors and helps to negotiate commercial contracts. He co-owns one of the SVR’s best-known locomotives Taw Valley and two Class 50 diesel locomotives. Phil celebrated his 60th birthday by welcoming 140 guests for a special charter trip along the Severn Valley Railway, followed by a party at the Engine House, Highley. The SVR Charitable Trust welcomes all donations to its endowment Future Fund, and further details are at www. svrtrust.org.uk.
