Rotary Club of Pershore

‘Loved Ones Remembered’

T

hanks once again to the generosity of local people and businesses, Pershore Rotary’s Christmas 2018 ‘Tree of Lights’ appeal “In Memory of Loved Ones” has exceeded all expectations by raising an amazing £5,000 for the club’s three main charities – the Midlands Air Ambulance, Acorns Hospice and Arthritis Research UK. Event organiser, Ken Rowe, said "When it comes to our annual appeal, Pershore Rotary is grateful for the support given by newspapers and magazines, particularly The Grapevine. With its wide coverage of homes in the area, we have been able to reach out to a far larger audience and the increased donations reflect that." Ken went on to say, "Pershore Rotary is immensely grateful to Asda and the Co-operative stores in Pershore for allowing Rotarians to collect donations from shoppers in the lead up to Christmas. Our greatest challenge and hope for the 2018 appeal, was to raise more money for the charities than we did in 2017. We achieved that by extending our appeal to some of the new housing areas and by direct involvement with local businesses." In particular, Pershore Rotary would like to recognise the generosity and support given by the following businesses throughout the Christmas 2018 appeal:

»» Andrew Grant & Clifton-Crick Sharp & Co - for displaying rolling lists of ‘Loved Ones Remembered’ on computer screens in their office windows »» Timothy Lea of Lodge Farm - for supplying the Christmas tree »» Vic Haynes Transport - for delivering the tree to site, and »» Pershore Town Council - for fixing and lighting the Christmas tree. And to the following businesses in Pershore and the surrounding area: »» Allan Morris & Osborne, Classic Cuts, Eckington Manor, E Hill & Son Funeral Directors, Fordy’s Fishing Tackle, Hare and Home, Isabella Rose Lingerie, Jackson Family Funeral Directors, Memory Lane Memorials, O.H.M.S. Ltd, Pershore Patty, Readyhedge Ltd, Riverside Fish Bar, Silver Fern Osteopaths, Sweet Traditions and The Salon. As Rotarians, we take pride in our local community, using our knowledge to tackle the challenges faced in the area. Rotary is one of the world’s largest and most successful humanitarian service organisations. If you would like to know more about Rotary in Pershore please, contact Bob Marchant at bobmarchant@uwclub.net or on 07850 996732.

In the last magazine, I said we would be introducing a Clubs & Groups page, which seems to have met with great approval, judging by the number of people who have emailed me with details of their organisations. As you will see we have a large number of clubs and groups listed, but there is still room for more, so get in touch if your organisation isn’t listed. Thank you also to everyone who sent in details of their events – we had a bumper crop of these this time, which is brilliant, so keep ‘em coming!

Stonebow House Residential Home

S

tonebow House Residential Home had an open day in February to showcase the progress made at the home over the last year. Digital care plan system and Wi-Fi The biggest impact to the care provided at Stonebow House was the implementation of a digital care plan system. Person Centred Software allows relatives to view the care of their family member on a daily basis through a very simple app. The information shared is secure and access is only given to those with permission. For the first time photographs can be shared securely and privately to residents and next-of-kin. Each resident’s care plan is also available to view, comment and participate in developing individualised care. This has allowed the home and care staff to improve person centred care. Reports are easily accessible, from daily meals, participation in activities to the state of mind and many more. This has been a major overhaul for the manager and providers of the written system that is traditionally used in the care industry. All care actions are recorded throughout the day and can be monitored in real-time. Over 100 care actions are recorded daily, compared to the 6-10 on the written system. All the care actions are time and date stamped, with the name of the carer providing the care. Transparency and responsibility has been brought to the fore. In the background of this development was the extension of a comprehensive Wi-Fi system. This has benefited the residents and their interaction on Kindles, iPads and Skype calls. According to the owner, Franco Ricotta, access to the internet is not a luxury anymore, but a necessity. Activities During last year the home has also developed better age related clubs for their residents. The art club is run by residents’ next of kin and the work is proudly displayed every week in the home library A glass of sherry, good company and a paint brush has seen the club grow week by week.

8

The knitting club, also run by wonderful next of kin volunteers, has resulted in one of the residents knitting teddy bear no 75 (at time of writing) and donating the sales back to the residents fund to allow for more outdoor trips. The home has also extended the hours of chair exercises to twice a week as the results of better mobility and positive attitude were overwhelming. The classes are provided by a trained individual and form part of the activities offered weekly. Future plans Three self-care units are nearly completed on the grounds of Stonebow House. Vince Ricotta told The Grapevine that these units are specially designed for the elderly and will be wheelchair accessible, with health and safety at the forefront of the design. The units are developed specifically for elderly citizens who will benefit from the care, safety, companionship and facilities of a care home, but who are not yet ready to give up their independence. Operations Director, Anne-Lotte Ricotta, says care will be designed according to the residents’ needs and can be changed weekly – from not requiring any care to two visits a day when they are not feeling well or needing meals delivered. The care is designed specifically in accordance with the changing needs and requirements of the individual. Additionally, residents of the self-care units can benefit from the activities offered through the home, dine with the residents, make use of the weekly hairdresser or just have a drink in the courtyard with the other residents when the weather is nice. The three units comprise an en-suite bathroom, bedroom, open plan kitchen and lounge. Each unit will have part of the garden and will be pet friendly. The units will be connected to the home via footpaths and through the Nurse Call System. Parking will be available for residents and visitors.

Is Leakage from the Bladder or Bowel Normal as you Age or after having a Baby? No it is not!

N

or do you have to stay silent and put up with it! There is plenty that can be done to help, but first you have to break the embarrassment taboo and talk about it. Urinary incontinence affects one in three of all women, with incidence increasing with age, and up to 30 percent of men by the age of 60. Incontinence is also thought to be more common than other chronic health conditions such as asthma or diabetes, but because we don’t like to talk about such personal matters, it remains a hidden statistic. Urinary and faecal incontinence is a major health issue; symptoms can be distressing, socially disruptive and have a massive effect on an individual’s quality of life. It can also impact on their family, and personal relationships. Yet, it is estimated that less than 20% of sufferers are seeking help with their symptoms due to embarrassment or lack of knowledge that anything can be done to improve their lives. Sarah is a specialist Women’s and Men’s Health Chartered Physiotherapist, (also known as

Pelvic Health Physiotherapists), and can help with a number of these inter-related problems. It is important to understand that incontinence is a symptom, not a diagnosis, condition or disease. Therefore it requires a thorough assessment, which includes a detailed history of the onset and symptoms, followed by an appropriate examination, in order to accurately identify the cause of the problem, and initiate an appropriate course of treatment. 70% of incontinence is potentially reversible! Women’s and Men’s Health does not only relate to incontinence issues: If you are experiencing any of the below Sarah can help you too. • Pelvic Organ Prolapse – pre and post surgery • Pregnancy related issues – ante and post-natal • Sexual Dysfunction including Erectile Dysfunction and Pelvic Pain • Difficult Defecation and Chronic Constipation

If you are experiencing any of these issues come and see Sarah on a Friday afternoon at Sandie Davis Physiotherapy in Bakers Arcade, Pershore. We can talk about your problem, in a comfortable, private and discreet environment and find an appropriate way to treat it, getting you back your lifestyle and hobbies that you thought you may never be able to do again for fear of embarrassment. You do not need a doctor’s or specialist referral, although we may recommend seeking further help depending on the outcome of the assessment. We also hold a Prostate Support Group, for gentlemen to come and talk things through informally with others experiencing similar difficulties and to share solutions. Sarah will be there to answer any specific queries and to lead discussions as required. Refreshments provided. This takes place at Sandie Davis Physiotherapy on the last Friday afternoon of each month. Please ring for details.

Left or Right? A

t least one person in ten is left handed. Until fairly recent times in the UK, anyone writing with their left hand may have been forced to change by their teacher.

In Roman times, salt was a valuable commodity, giving rise to the word ‘salary.’ If it was spilled it was considered to be unlucky so salt was thrown over the left shoulder to ward off bad luck.

Famous left handed people from the past include Alexander the Great, Lewis Carroll, Charlie Chaplin, Bob Dylan, M C Escher, Benjamin Franklin, Greta Garbo, Judy Garland, George VI, Jimi Hendrix, Jack the Ripper, Joan of Arc, Leonardo da Vinci, Paul McCartney, Marilyn Monroe, Napoleon Bonaparte and Queen Victoria.

When dressmaking, it is considered unlucky to sew the left sleeve to the garment before the right. An itchy right palm is said to be a sign of money coming to you whereas an itchy left palm means you will be paying money out.

It was the Romans who invented the right-handed handshake and the left to right alphabet. Their words for right and left were ‘dexter’ and ‘sinister’ – which led to a few superstitions about anything to do with the left side being evil. Evil spirits were said to lurk over the left shoulder.

Even most climbing plants are righthanded. Honeysuckle is one of the few plants that twine to the left. However, wedding rings are usually worn on the third finger of the left hand. This was a custom originating with the Greeks and Romans because the vein from this finger (the ‘vena amoris’) was said to lead directly to the heart.

The Egyptians didn’t feel they had to write left to right. They went up, down, left or right according to how they felt. The Ancient Greeks wrote Boustrophedon style – with each line alternating down the page like an ox ploughing a field – one line left to right, the next right to left and so on. The Chinese and Japanese write in vertical columns from right to left. However, since World War Two Japanese technical books are often written from left to right across the page. Hebrew was originally written in stone with a hammer and chisel. The chisel was held in the left hand and the right hand held the hammer. The text was created from right to left. Arabic, Kurdish, Persian and Urdu are also written from right to left.

Creating Your Garden Paradise article by Jonathan Bishop

Winter Damage

I

t is really good horticultural practice to inspect your plants, shrubs and trees frequently, especially after the winter, when storm and snow damage may be present. You need to see if you can find any dead, damaged or diseased material in the heart of the plants; material that has died over the winter. Luckily we have not had the volume of snow we have had in previous years. So a lot of damage through wind and snow hasn’t happened, however it is still worth going around all your shrubs and plants and taking out any dead, diseased and damaged material you find. In the horticultural trade we call these the three D’s. This is something that is essential to rose pruning, but is also applicable to all your other shrubs, and even your trees. If you are not sure if it is dead, scrape away a small part of the bark with your secateurs and a thin green layer of plant membrane should be revealed. This is the cambium layer - the living part of the plant - if it is there then your plant is alive. On some shrubs like Mahonia and Berberis this will be bright yellow, due to the presence of the chemical berberine. With experience, you will get a feel for what is dead and what is living tissue. Dead tissue is often brittle and may break off in your hand even with gentle pressure. If you are

20 20

unsure leave it until later in the spring. If the plant sn’t budded out by late May then it is unlikely to be alive. There are only a few things that are dormant beyond that point. Catalpa trees are one of them; they seem to appear dead way beyond when all the other trees are green, however they are very much alive, just waiting for warm, mild weather to arrive, as they come from more sub-tropical climes. Anything that has collapsed, will need cutting back to an appropriate bud. I have been to see a number of our customers with privet hedges (Lonicera nitida) that have collapsed with the recently high, strong winds. With collapsed hedges, the best way is to cut them back and let them re-established. It is tempting to tie them in, but once the cells in the stems have been elongated or snapped then there is little hope of the hedge regaining its shape by these methods. It is better to cut them down or trim the damaged sections back to suitable growing points. When pruning it is good practice to ensure that the hedge does not become top heavy. When shearing a hedge I still hand prune sections to ensure it doesn’t become too dense at the top. I make sure the hedge has a slight ‘A-Frame’ shape so that any snow is shed from the top and the low part of the hedge receives light. If you have suffered a lot of wind and snow damage in the past you may want to consider giving the hedge a slightly angled top so that the snow is easily shed.

Anything in the garden can suffer damage. For example, flowers that have come into bud early and have been hit by frost damage; any buds that are starting to rot on the stems needs to come off. Roses and Camellias are prone to this sort of damage and the flower can have lots of moisture in them, which can cause it to rot - this can then spread further down the plant or to other buds. So picking those off by hand is good husbandry. Larger elements of the garden such as apple trees can suffer from wind damage. It is good to get out and inspect your larger trees and shrubs after storms as the roots may have been moved or uprooted. If they have, then this is the time of year to get them supported before they start growing fresh roots in the spring. You want to get any plants that are leaning to become upright, so some supports might be useful. Hopefully, by doing this you are

The Grapevine

supporting the tree and giving it a longer life. The support will stop it rocking in the wind and allow it to put down new roots. For anyone interested in Foliation looking at any aspects of your garden from hard to soft landscaping, small to big projects please contact me on the numbers below

WORTHY WINES: AUSTRIA

T

he Sattlerhof winery, hotel and restaurant, is located at Sudsteiermark and has grand vineyards producing an excellent range of impressive wines: classic Styrian wines, using selective, fully-ripened grapes include superb Sauvignon Blanc productions; very popular village wines have splendid Muskateller, a grape that is typical of the region; singlevineyard productions are regularly chosen by many connoisseurs and wine lovers, and aged Pfarrweingarten wines are only produced during the very best years. Gamlitz Sauvignon Blanc and Gamlitz Muskateller have wide appeal. Grapes from their Gamlitz vineyards are utilised for these popular productions. Very pleasant fruit bouquets greet the nasal senses, and a most acceptable mouthfeel and palate follows, for each. Ried Sernauberg Sauvignon Blanc has grapes grown from the single-vineyard site, Sernauberg. The bouquet leads to a sensuous

mouthfeel and the palate’s appreciation. This elegant wine is very good for ageing, as are a number of other productions from Sattlerhof, including Ried Kranachberg Sauvignon Blanc, which is impressively alluring. Also, very much appreciated are the Ried Pfarrweingarten wines, with their outstanding bouquets, full mouthfeels and palate sensations - great wines for ageing, too. These wines are a wonderful accompaniment to fish, seafood and a lot of cuisine, as well as being ideal to enjoy on their own. For a sweet wine may I suggest Trockenbeerenauslese Sauvignon Blanc. Again, grapes harvested selectively, by hand, plus the process for this wine, produces a delight to savour. Elegant, delicious and a perfect pairing with numerous desserts. A wealth of information about their full range can be found at www.sattlerhof.at Fink und Kotzian OG, in the Weinviertel, respects the traditions during the making of wines, as do many wine producers, whilst

venturing further, to enhance appearances, aromas and flavours. Gruner Veltliner productions are always very popular and Ried Hintern Dorf, plus Ried Konigsberg are regularly choseny. Riesling Ried Hintern Dorf Berg und Meer+ and ZT Sauvignon Blanc are further examples of impressive productions from this company. Again, both have a good bouquet of tropical fruits and a structured mouthfeel. The palate’s sensation also extends the pleasures of these wines. Great accompaniments to fish, seafood and white meats, etc. For all details of their full range, www.weinfink.at As always, Enjoy! Trevor Langley

News From Guernsey B

ack in May 2014 this magazine very kindly printed an article about a book I had just had published called “No News From Guernsey”.

The book was about a cousin, Desmond Mulholland, who lived on Guernsey, had signed up with the British Army in 1939, and was then ordered back to the island to carry out reconnaissance on the occupying German forces in July 1940. Unfortunately he was captured and had to endure POW camps until April 1945. Sadly he died before reaching home at the age of 26. He was buried on Guernsey. Desmond was a qualified barrister and had a very secure future ahead of him. The article was read by a lady from Little Comberton who rang me to say that she thought that the Desmond Mulholland in the article she had read was the same man who was her sister's Godfather. That prompted a meeting with the two sisters and the second article in August 2014. Since then a lot has happened. At the beginning of last year I was contacted by a gentleman resident of Guernsey, Keith Pengelley, who ran a company - Guernsey Walking Tours - that organises themed walking tours of the island. One of those tours included a bit about Desmond. Having read my book, and from all the interest shown by those who went on the tours, he decided to dedicate a tour solely to Desmond, finishing at his

24

grave. This prompted further activity. In May last year the Commonwealth War Graves Commission were contacted to find out whether it was possible to have a memorial stone placed on Desmond's grave. They visited the island and said there was every chance that this could happen. However the committee that looks after St. Martin's Cemetery where Desmond is buried, said, quite understandably, that the grave needed refurbishing before that could happen. I asked a Guernsey based memorial mason to give me a price for doing what the committee had requested: with all the intricate work that has to be done, with the lettering and rebuilding the base of the kerb, it is going to cost in excess of £1,000.

performance by a local band called “The Cor Damme Lars” who have not only offered to appear free, but are proposing to compose a song about Desmond as they are quite smitten by his story. Part of the Guernsey government has thrown its weight behind the event by offering to promote it. As a result of all the publicity surrounding this I have received calls offering to send contributions to the restoration fund. One person said “Finally Desmond is going to get the recognition he so richly deserves”. When it has been completed I hope to report back through this magazine. Peter Jesson Bishampton

This has not deterred us, and Keith Pengelley has now organised a huge fund raising event in the German Underground Hospital on Guernsey and called it “Going Underground”. The event, on 29th March, will consist of poetry and prose readings by local writers, and a

Reasons why you Shouldn’t have a Will one

You know when you’re going to die, you’ve got loads of time!

two

You rather like the idea of your children battling over your estate, falling out and never speaking to each other again!

three

You dislike your spouse and would prefer them to struggle with strenuous legal issues and be tied up in expensive litigation with your children for many years.

four

Your family doesn’t need the money. You actually much prefer the idea of the Government taking as much of your estate for taxes as they wish.

five

You think foster care would be the best place for your children, whilst Social Services and your family fight in court over which relative gets custody. Of course, we are being overly flippant! Like us, you will not agree with any of these reasons.

What logical reason is there for you NOT to have a Will?

You may assume that everything you own at your death will go to your husband, wife or partner, or perhaps you believe you have nothing to leave anyway. The fact is, without a Will, the Intestacy Rules say who gets what and put simply your property may not go to those who you wish to receive it. If you care about who benefits from your property after your death you MUST MAKE A WILL.

"I've had a bad day . . ."

E

arlier this week one of our members reached out in our ALM Family Facebook group for help.

the window so you might as well start again on Monday, right?

She basically said she was struggling with her mind-set and focus.

How are you going to feel if you consume ALL of those extra calories from that point until Monday, typically going into ‘selfsabotage’ mode and eating and drinking everything in sight?

She said: “When it’s good it’s great, but it only takes one missed training session or one off-plan meal and that blows the whole week.”

WRONG!

Does this sound like you?

Why wait until Monday to ‘press the reset button’?

And this can be fairly typical for lots of people.

The BEST thing you can do is get yourself straight back on track.

You’re ‘GOOD’ Monday to Friday, but as soon as Friday night comes you have a few drinks, takeaways, alcohol – you name it, you have it.

If you have one ‘bad’ meal, don’t refer to it as a ‘bad’ meal or as a ‘treat’ or ‘reward’. That mind-set towards food is already an unhealthy one.

Because you’ve ‘earned’ it or you’ve had a stressful week so you ‘need’ it. Or maybe you’ve had a fantastic week so you ‘deserve’ it. Maybe you don’t even make it to Friday and this happens on a Wednesday or Thursday.

So, if you do go off track, enjoy it (guilt free), accept it and move on. Make your next meal choice a healthy one. And reflect on WHY you did go off track and what you can do to prevent it from happening in future. Don’t wait until Monday and consume more calories and pushing yourself further and further away from your goal. If you miss a training session – that’s ok! Life happens, things crop up at the last minute and sometimes we can’t train when we want to.

FOOD IS FOOD. Some food is highly nutritious and low in calories, some food is high in calories but low in nutritional value.

You decide what types of foods you’d like to consume on a daily Which then totally throws you off basis in order to reach your goals. track. You’ve ‘blown it’ - any progress It shouldn’t been seen as good, bad that26 you’ve made has now gone or acall treat. To out advertise 01684 833715 or email: info@grapevinepublications.co.uk

But, can you make time to workout on another day? Or do a workout at home? Can you increase your daily activity levels for the rest of the week? Get moving, go for a walk in your lunch break. Or maybe reduce the amount of calories you’re consuming if you’re unable to train as much as you had hoped? There are always options. It’s easy for us to turn to food for comfort or reward. Try and break those habits and change for a positive healthy one. If you’ve had a stressful day, can you relieve some of that stress by doing some exercise? If you want a reward, can you ‘treat’ yourself in other way: have a massage, manicure/pedicure, have a relaxing bath, take some time out, read a book. If you’re struggling to find out WHY you turn to food for comfort/reward, maybe start writing a journal every day, reflect on the events for each day and write down any instances that pushed you towards food for comfort/reward. You may begin to see The a pattern emerge - if so, what Grapevine

can you do to change that or at least be more aware of it? The support in the group for this particular member was incredible! Everyone was sharing their struggles, ways in which they have changed their old habits and what they focus on to help them.

• are you lifting heavier weights? The list goes on… But we must celebrate those WINS in order to keep pushing forwards (especially on the ‘bad’ days). Take each day as it comes and keep focusing on your goals.

This highlighted to me, that when you’re leading a healthy lifestyle, no matter how long you’ve been doing it for, it’s YOUR journey and is individual to YOU!

It’s not going to be easy.

There will always be ups and downs, times that you’ll find things really easy and times when you feel you’re making no progress at all and feel like you’re going backwards.

There are no secrets, no magic pills, just hard work, determination and consistency.

BUT … always remember just how far you’ve come.

We’re always there to support you and help you every step of the way.

If ever you feel like quitting, remember why you started.

So, next time you think you’ve had a ‘bad’ day, ask yourself: how can I turn it into a GOOD day rather than letting the day go from BAD to WORSE!

Use many tools to monitor progress: • scales (if you must) • bodyweight measurements • progress pictures • how do your clothes feel? • how is your sleep pattern? • how much energy do you have now? • can you walk up the stairs without getting out of breath?

You didn’t gain weight over night and you won’t lose it overnight either.

This is a journey and when you train with us, you’re never alone.

For more information on the services we provide, or if you’d like to take part in our next 6 week transformation, then please take a look at our website www. almfitness.co.uk or email amy@ almfitness.co.uk and I’ll be more than happy to help. 27

Safari Park Lecturer Swaps Training For Trainers . . . 10 March, on behalf of Save the Rhino International (SRI).

A

brave member of staff from West Midland Safari Park is going above and beyond to fundraise for the conservation of threatened rhinos. Senior Education Officer and Associate Lecturer, Cathy Dittrich, will be swapping the classroom in Bewdley, for the sights of London, as she partakes in the Vitality Big Half (London half-marathon) on

To make this incredible challenge even more difficult, Cathy has only just started running again recently after a six-month hiatus, she has never run this distance before and she will be completing the whole 13 miles with a broken hand! However, she insists that she could not turn down the opportunity to combine her hobby with helping the plight of one of her favourite animals. Cathy said, “My passion for rhinos and running both started in 2010 a life-changing year for me, as I was made redundant, quit smoking and

enrolled on a level 3 Animal Care course. On a field trip to South Africa in 2011, I encountered wild rhinos on safari and met a baby rhino in a rehab centre. I was blown away by the majestic presence of these creatures and was shocked and saddened to learn that this very same year, a subspecies of the Javan rhino was declared extinct, in addition to the western black rhino. “As I continued my studies with an Animal and Biological Sciences degree, I revisited South Africa and developed an aspiration to become a Zoo Education Officer. I wanted to share what I had learned and enthuse others about the amazing animals of this planet, in the hope that I could inspire people to care about and increase conservation efforts for animals in need.” She continued, “Fast forward to the present and I’m now coming up to my fourth year at the Safari Park, but sadly the plight of the rhino continues. I’m hoping that this physical challenge will help fundraise for a very worthy charity, whilst raising awareness about these magnificent animals!"

as the Park has a ‘crash’ of eight southern white rhinos and three Indian rhinos. This includes ‘Granville’ – the latest baby born in 2018 and a success for the Park in their contribution to the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme (EEP). The EEP aims to safeguard the future of a species vulnerable to the continued threat of poaching and habitat loss. At the last count, just over 20,000 wild southern white rhinos remained in South Africa, with 769 killed in 2018. Furthermore, three out of the five species of rhino are classed as ‘Critically Endangered.’

Pet Owners Now EmBARKing on Dog Friendly Bucket List Adventures

D

og lovers creating a list of life’s ‘must do’ adventures are now likely to consider inviting their beloved four legged best friends along for the ride. Sheila Hughes of local dog holiday service, Barking Mad Dog Care – Pershore & East Worcester, explains: “Whilst we are kept extremely busy caring for dogs whose owners are jetting off to exotic locations, there seems to be a growing trend to also create travel memories with your pet – with some people even going so far as to create a bucket list of the animal’s very own!” It is easy to see why dogs make such fantastic bucket list travel companions because: they don’t complain

when things don’t go to plan, they’re always happy to be photographed, they love just being with you and don’t ask, “Are we there yet?” Barking Mad aficionado Karen Robinson said, “This summer I plan to walk my Border collie, Paddy, along the silver sands of Charlie’s Beach on the remote Hebridean island of Eriskay. Most of the items on my bucket list include my dog!” John and Elaine Warburton, franchise owners with Barking Mad Dog Care said: “Our dogs are such a huge part of our lives that we obviously want to include them in our bucket list plans. We'd definitely like to walk the West Highland Way, complete a moonlit marathon round Loch Leven and someday the Coast to Coast (Oban to St Andrews). To do these walks with a dog or two by your side would be amazing - we just love being out on the hills with ours.” Famously, author Jilly Cooper admitted that she hadn’t been abroad for 22 years because she would miss her dog too much. The bond between a dog and its owner can be incredibly strong and the fear of your dog being unhappy while you are apart, can be enough to prevent some people from travelling abroad.

Companionship, friendship and fun are guaranteed! • Dogs to suit your lifestyle • Completely flexible • Trial stays to ensure compatibility • Full support and advice • A playmate for your own dog

Barking Mad Dog Care customer Kathryn said (via Trustpilot): “I was so nervous about leaving my fur babies, I had not had a holiday for 11 years so that I didn’t have to leave them. It’s such a relief to (now) know there is someone out there who will care for your dogs just as much as you do.” Research by Prudential revealed that 90% of over 55s had a bucket list, which is a positive list of experiences to have during your life time. Prudential surveyed over 1000 adults to find out what were the most popular bucket list activities. Unsurprisingly,

The most popular bucket list wish was to ‘see the Northern Lights’, a feat which is possibly achievable with a dog from a UK destination such as Scotland’s west coast islands. However, number two on the list was to ‘travel on the Orient Express’ which is obviously not achievable with a four legged friend in tow, as dogs aren’t allowed. Sheila Hughes continues, “We love the fact that dog owners are creating special memories with their pets. For our customers, dogs are real members of the family and time and time again we encounter relief and gratitude that they have found a solution to the guilt of leaving their pet behind when they really can’t take them. Owners are delighted that their dogs can have a holiday of their very own with one of our loving host families, whilst they are completing the adventures on their travel wish list that aren’t dog friendly.” Barking Mad is part of the Franchise Brands plc group of companies and is the UK’s favourite dog holiday company, as verified by TrustPilot. A Convenient Herb Garden A

fter moving house, leaving behind a large garden, I now have a tiny garden, and I realise that I can’t grow quite such a variety of plants and herbs as I did before. I am now trying some pots of herbs on my kitchen windowsill. You can grow almost any herb in a container and most are very easy. Some herbs shouldn't be mixed as they have different water requirements, while others are more finicky and should be grown alone, so be sure to put plants that require similar care in the same pot. You can grow as many types of herbs in one container as you want, as long as you make sure that all the herbs in a single pot share the same sun, water, and soil preferences. For example, rosemary likes it hot and dry, while parsley needs steady moisture. They wouldn’t be perfect in the same pot. Ideally then, for best results, give each herb its own pot so that you can customize care and give it room to grow. Start by placing some broken pieces of pot over the drainage holes to Grapevine prevent the compost from The

washing out. For free-draining compost, mix multipurpose or soil-based compost with a few generous handfuls of grit, adding and mixing together in stages as you fill the container. Light is the most important aspect of growing indoor herbs so a sunny windowsill is an added advantage. Aggressive spreaders, such as mint and lemon balm, will need separate containers to keep them under control. In the past I have always planted my mint in a bucket with holes for drainage and place it in a handy spot where I can pick readily and control it's spread, but now it's in a pot, until that is, it grows too large, and then I will just have to find room outside. There are many benefits to growing herbs in containers. For me, it’s all about access. I love having fresh herbs growing in pots on my kitchen windowsill. That way, when I’m in the middle of making

dinner and realize I’ve forgotten to harvest a handful of mint or rosemary, they are right there, nearby. Rosemary has aromatic, needle-like foliage that adds a welcome depth of flavour to roasted potatoes and chicken dishes. Pot-grown herbs can really transform your cooking; they’re very low maintenance and contribute bags of flavour to every meal. Above all, remember to pick and enjoy your herbs regularly. The plants actually benefit from regular picking and will produce lots more shoots in response - a win-win situation! Having herbs on hand is just brilliant – and they look fantastic too! article & photos by Pamela 35 Green

T

he Shelsley Walsh Water Mill Society will open its doors to welcome visitors from 11am to 4pm on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th May 2019, as part of National Mills Open Weekend – the annual festival of the UK’s milling heritage, and the chance for everyone to explore their local windmills and watermills. The weekend is coordinated by the Mills Section of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB). Entry is free of charge although, as a registered charity, donations towards the upkeep of the mill will be very welcome. There is plenty of free parking in the world-famous speed hill climb paddock (now entering its 114th year of speed events) next to the mill. The water mill at Shelsley Walsh was part of a farming community approximately 8 miles north west of Worcester in the beautiful Teme Valley until the early 1900’s, and, although there has been a watermill on this site since 1308, the current mill shows three stages of construction spanning the last 300 years. several retired engineers, builders, educationalists, IT experts, accountants and an auctioneer. Collectively known as the ‘Dibnahs’, they have lovingly restored the mill over a ten year period to its current working condition for use as a visitor attraction and educational resource. The Shelsley Walsh Water Mill is the only working water-powered corn mill in Worcestershire, and a demonstration of flour milling will take place from 2pm on both days. In addition to the Mill, Dibnahs have restored several agricultural machines, mostly powered by the water wheel via belt drive, which can be seen running in the workshops next door. Tea, coffee and cakes will be available throughout the day. The mill is located near the foot of the world famous Shelsley Walsh Motorsport (speed hill-climb course) run by the Midland Automobile Club since 1905 and is adjacent to the beautiful 12th Century Church of St Andrews, which is well worth a visit too. How to manage acute lower back pain Approximately 80% of the population will experience an episode of lower back pain at some time during their life. Fortunately, most make a full recovery within a few weeks. The right management of an acute lower back injury will help you recover faster. 1. Relative Rest Bed rest is no longer considered necessary and can slow down recovery. However, it is advisable to rest from any strenuous activity such as lifting, heavy manual work and exercise initially.

5. Relax and stay positive Relax and stay positive as this eases your pain by reducing muscle tension. Worrying about your injury will slow your recovery. 6. Exercises A simple back exercise such as knee rolls will help reduce your pain. Lay on your back with your knees together, roll them to either side as far as you are able without pain. Repeat 10 times to either side, morning and evening.

2. Normalise It is important to keep moving and continue with your normal daily activities as much as your pain allows. Research has shown that people who remain active are likely to recover more quickly. 3. Medication Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen can help relieve the pain. It is always recommended you seek advice from your GP or Pharmacist as to whether it is safe to take these as there are several alternative pain killers. 4. Ice and Heat Try an ice pack (frozen vegetables will do) or heat (for example a hot water bottle) and use which ever one gives you most pain relief. You can always alternate between the two.

Health & Wellbeing of Rabbits this Easter

I

t is easy to think about fluffy rabbits around Easter time. However rabbits aren't the easiest pets to look after Requiring specially adapted housing, room to exercise and an appropriate diet. Rabbits are selective feeders, meaning they will eat the nice bit and leave bits essential to their health.

• Locust pods and beans

We recommend rabbit to be fed on 80% hay, with 20% pellets and fresh fruit, wild flower and vegetables. Foods that should be avoided include:

• Chives

• Apple pips

• Ivy

• Avocado

• Poppy

• Potato

• Privet

• Rhubarb

• Primrose

• Tomato leaves

• Ragwort

• Bulbs • Bluebells • Yew • Foxgloves • Garlic • Onion • Shallots • Hemlock • Buttercups • Dock

We advise you consider neutering your rabbits to avoid unwanted litters and reduce the risk of cancer. Un-neutered males can become aggressive, whereas neutered rabbits can live happily with male and female rabbits. They are susceptible to a number of conditions, some of which can be fatal. We advise that you do twice daily checks of your rabbits and enclosure for any thing that could cause harm. Rabbits are at risk of developing dental disease and misalignment of the cheek teeth especially if they eat a diet with insufficient fibre. These issues can be rectified if they are addressed and treated in the early stages.

Otherwise they can lead to other conditions , such as gut stasis. Gut stasis is when the digestive system of a rabbit slows down or stops. This can result in a build-up of gas and toxins that can be lethal.

Obesity is common, therefore it is important that rabbits are able to exercise by providing them with space to express natural behaviours and play. Rabbits can be very playful pets, so providing them with toys can entertain and prevent obesity.

Stockists of:

Dressmaking, patchwork and curtain fabrics as well as waddings, cutters, boards and useful craft items.

We see a number of cases of flystrike during the warmer months, that doesn't mean that rabbits can't get flystrike at anytime, (we sadly saw a case Christmas eve this year). This is were flies have been attracted to dirty housing or messy bottoms then lay eggs, which hatch out into maggots. Rabbits require annual vaccines just like our dogs, cats and horses to protect them against fatal diseases. For many years, the diseases we have been concerned about are Myxomatosis and Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD) these can be prevented a single annual vaccine, that is readily available that protects against both diseases. In more recent years, another strain of RHD has become increasing prevalent and this strain is not covered by the normal vaccine, has been seen to be fatal (We have sadly seen around 10 cases since last summer) . However there is an extra vaccine available to prevent against this. If you would like to speak with a member of our veterinary team regarding your rabbit health or their vaccination status, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Pick Up Your Pen! O

ur writing competition for this month has a springtime theme. What do you like best about remember about the season? Is it your favourite time of year and if so, why? What do you remember about this time of year when you were a child? Do you remember celebrating Pancake Day or Easter? Did you go to church or chapel? Did you have special food? Even if you’ve not written anything since you were at school, be brave and pick up your pen. You really have got nothing to lose – and you may be one our winners.

Valentine Story by Joan Taylor

M

any years ago, I was invited to a Valentine’s Dance by a boy called John. I spent ages making a new dress. However, that day at work we were all asked to stay a bit later to complete an urgent order. I saw my best friend Nancy in town at lunchtime and explained. She told me to write a note and she’d drop it in to his house on her way home. (There were no mobile phones in those days and many families – including mine The Grapevine

– didn’t have a phone in the house.) I hurried home, got changed and went to our agreed meeting place but he wasn’t there. It started to rain and I decided the best thing to do was to go to the Village Hall. I did wonder if my friend had given John the right message. She’d been very jealous when he’d asked me out. Sure enough, the first people I saw were Nancy and John dancing together. I stood there wondering what to do.

“Would you like to dance?” asked a boy who I recognised as John’s quiet friend Michael. He had dark eyes and a nice smile. “I was going to invite you to the dance, but John said he’d already asked you.” “He couldn’t wait an extra half hour for me,” I said, returning his smile. John dumped Nancy a fortnight later. Michael and I had over fifty very happy years together.

Worcestershire's

MILITARY HERITAGE

T

he 29th Worcestershire Regiment was founded in 1694 and has a long and glorious history serving Crown and Country. Founded in Norton Barracks, Worcester, in 1923 the museum has grown as the Regiment evolved into the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment in 1970 and the Mercian Regiment in 2007 due to amalgamations due to cuts in the size of the Army. The Museum, which reflects these changes, became a Registered Charity (No 276510) in 1978. Its display in the Worcester City Museum and Arts Gallery in Foregate Street was updated in 2001 with a Heritage Lottery Fund grant and its offices and archives moved into Dancox House Army Reserve Centre in Pheasant Street, Worcester in 2012. Its purpose is to preserve the history, traditions and achievements of the Regiment and those who have served, or are serving in it, from 1694 to the present day and to educate current and future generations. It does this through its superb collection of weapons, uniforms, artefacts, letters, diaries, papers, photographs, archives and a library that tell the military and social history of those who served in the

48

Worcestershire Regiment and its successors over more than 300 years. It provides an in depth insight into life around the world relating our nation’s history and their part in it. Today it still collects and displays the story of young soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. With its display in the Worcester City Museum and Arts Gallery on Foregate Street and its archives in Dancox House on Pheasant Street, Worcester, it seeks to present them in a way which entertains, educates and inspires current and future generations from Worcestershire and beyond. As can be imagined over the last four years of the World War I commemorations it has been very busy and as the World War II anniversaries start from 2019 an increase in activity is anticipated. Now it is gearing

itself up for the 75th Anniversary of D Day. The Museum is run by a full time Curator and part time assistant who are supported by a dedicated team of 20 volunteers who help with the management of the collection and field research enquiries. Their work was recognised when one of them won the Collections Award at the West Midlands Volunteer Awards in 2018.
